The traction behavior in cryogenic solid-lubricated ball bearings (CSLBBs) used in liquid rocket engines (LREs) affects not only the dynamic response of the bearing but also the lubricity and wear characteristics of the solid lubrication coating. The traction coefficient between the ball and raceway depends on factors such as contact material, relative sliding velocity, and contact pressure. However, existing traction curve models for CSLBBs typically consider only one or two of these factors, limiting the accuracy and applicability of theoretical predictions. In this study, a novel traction model for CSLBBs is proposed, which incorporates the combined effects of contact material, relative sliding velocity, and contact pressure. Based on this model, a tribo-dynamic framework is developed to investigate the tribological and dynamic behavior of CSLBBs. The model is validated through both theoretical analysis and experimental data. Results show that the inclusion of solid lubricant effects significantly alters the relative sliding and frictional forces between the rolling elements and the raceway. These changes in turn influence the impact dynamics between the rolling elements and the cage, leading to notable variations in the bearing’s vibrational response. The findings may offer valuable insights for the wear resistance and vibration reduction design of CSLBBs. Full article

Considering environmental concerns, water-based nanolubricants have gained significant attention over conventional oil-based ones. Non-ecotoxic and highly environmentally friendly nanoadditives were chosen for nanolubricant synthesis, especially considering their use at elevated temperatures. In this study, hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (hBNNSs) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) were used to prepare water-based lubricants with glycerol and surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) in water under ultrasonication. An Rtec ball-on-disk tribometer was used to investigate the tribological performance of the synthesised water-based lubricants containing different nano-hBN/TiO2 concentrations, with dry and water conditions used as benchmarks. The results indicated that the water-based nanolubricant containing 0.5 wt% hBN and 0.5 wt% TiO2 exhibited the best tribological performance at both ambient (25 °C) and elevated (500 °C) temperatures. This optimal concentration leads to a reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) by 72.9% and 37.5%, wear of disk by 62.5% and 49%, and wear of ball by 74% and 69% at ambient and elevated temperatures, respectively, compared to that of distilled water. Lubrication mechanisms were attributed to the rolling, mending, tribofilm, solid layer formation, and synergistic effects of hBNNSs and TiO2 NPs. Full article

Many low-temperature applications, such as rocket engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport pumps, necessitate ultra-low-temperature operational environments. In these conditions, the properties of lubricating oils and greases are significantly influenced by temperature, leading to the widespread adoption of solid lubrication. Currently, there is no international research regarding the influence of bearing coatings on the subsurface stress distribution in raceways. The Lundberg–Palmgren (L-P) theory states that subsurface stress variations govern bearing lifespan. Therefore, this paper utilizes existing formulas and Python programming to calculate the subsurface stress field of the inner raceway in a MoS2 solid-lubricated angular contact ball bearing. Furthermore, it analyzes the impacts of factors such as coating material properties, slide-to-roll ratio, traction coefficient, and load on its subsurface stress field. The results reveal that for solid-lubricated ball bearings, as the load increases, the maximum subsurface stress shifts closer to the center of the contact area, and the maximum subsurface shear stress becomes more concentrated. As the traction coefficient increases, the stress on the XZ-plane side increases and its position moves closer to the surface, while the opposite trend is observed on the other side. Additionally, the maximum value of the subsurface von Mises stress is approximately 0.64P0, and the maximum value of the orthogonal shear stress component τyz in the subsurface is approximately 0.25P0. WS2 coating, as a solid lubricating material, plays a significant role in the lubrication of rotating components in spacecraft. During the launch process, however, spacecraft are exposed to high-temperature and humid atmospheric environments, which can lead to oxidative failure in the coating, thereby limiting its engineering applications. By doping with B elements, B/WS2 was successfully prepared as a composite coating. The results demonstrate that the fabricated coating exhibits excellent high-temperature tribological performance in atmospheric environments. The mechanism through which B doping improves the high-temperature friction and wear properties of the WS2 composite coating was revealed through high-temperature friction and wear tests. With the incorporation of B elements, the average friction coefficient of the coating was 0.071, and the wear rate was 7.63 × 10−7 mm3·N−1·m−1, with the wear mechanisms identified as abrasive wear and spalling. Due to high-temperature oxidation, thermal decomposition effects, and the formation of WB4 during sputtering, the wear resistance and anti-plastic deformation capability of the coating were further improved. Compared to room-temperature test conditions, the B/WS2 composite coating at different high temperatures exhibited superior friction coefficients and wear rates. Notably, at 150 °C, the average friction coefficient was as low as 0.015, and the wear forms were abrasive wear and adhesive wear. Full article

Vegetable oils are an important alternative to the massive use of fuels and lubricants from non-renewable energy sources. In this study, the physicochemical properties of coconut oil and waste cooking oil are investigated for biofuels and biolubricant applications. A transesterification of both oils was reached, and the transesterified oils were characterized by infrared analysis and gas chromatography. The lubricant performances of these oils have been evaluated using a ball-on-plane tribometer under an ambient atmosphere. Different formulations were developed using graphite particles as solid additive. Each initial and modified oil has been investigated as a base oil and as a liquid additive lubricant. The best friction reduction findings have been obtained for both initial oils as liquid additives, highlighting the key role of triglycerides in influencing tribological performances. Full article

Lubrication between the rail gauge face and wheel flange is necessary to improve vehicle performance and reduce component wear. One way to achieve this is to use a solid stick loaded against the wheel flange. This paper details twin-disc testing of eight stick products according to Annex H of EN 15427-2-1:2022 (previously Annex L of EN 16028:2012) and then describes a new assessment methodology using conditions more relevant to field application. EN 15427-2-1:2022 specifies a test involving the application of the product during wheel–rail specimen contact. Once a specified time has elapsed, product application ceases, and performance is assessed as the time taken for the friction coefficient to return to a nominal dry value. This is described as “retentivity”. In the new test, the product is applied whilst wheel and rail are out of contact, to allow the product to build up on the wheel, then the specimens are put into contact, under conditions representing 150 m of continuous, heavy flange contact; this process is repeated a set number of times. The new test showed that products that failed the current friction criteria successfully protect the wheel and rail from wear, which is ultimately the aim of the product application. Full article

Background/Objectives: Although technology has progressed and novel dosage forms have been developed, tablets are still the most used form of medication. However, the present manufacturing methods of these oral solid dosage forms offer limited capacity for personalized treatment and adaptable dosing. Personalized therapy, with a few exceptions, is not yet a part of routine clinical practice. Drug printing could be a possible approach to increase the use of personalized therapy. The aim of this work was to investigate the role of surface tension and the viscosity of inks in the formation of the printing pattern and to investigate how the porosity of substrate tablets influences the behavior of inks on the surface. Methods: Spray-dried mannitol served as a binder and filler, while magnesium stearate functioned as a lubricant in the preparation of substrate tablets. Brilliant Blue dye was a model “drug”. The ink formulation was applied to the substrates in three varying quantities. Results: Increasing the viscosity enhanced the drug content, potentially improving printing speed and pattern accuracy. However, it negatively impacted the dosing accuracy due to nozzle clogging and prolonged drying time. Viscosity had a significantly higher impact on the ink behavior than surface tension. Lowering the surface tension improved the dosing accuracy and reduced the drying time but resulted in smaller drop sizes and decreases in pattern accuracy. Reducing the substrate porosity led to longer drying times and diminished pattern accuracy. Conclusions: A target surface tension of around 30 mN/m is suggested for inkjet printing. It is necessary to further investigate the applicability of the technology with solutions of inks with high viscosity and low surface tension, including the API. Full article

The quantification of solid debris in used lubricating oil is essential for assessing transmission system wear and optimizing maintenance strategies. This study introduces a low-cost capacitive proximity sensor for monitoring total solid particle contamination in lubricants, with a focus on ferrous (Fe), non-ferrous (Al), and non-metallic (SiO2) debris. Controlled tests were performed using five mixing ratios of large-to-small particles (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100) at a fixed debris mass of 0.5 g per 25 mL of SAE 85W-140 automotive gear oil. Cubic regression analysis yielded high predictive accuracy, with average R2 values of 0.994 for Fe, 0.943 for Al, and 0.992 for SiO2. Further dimensionality reduction using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), along with Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) of multivariate statistical analysis, effectively classifies debris types and enhances interpretability. These results demonstrate the potential of capacitive sensing as an offline, non-invasive alternative to traditional techniques for wear debris monitoring in transmission systems. These results confirm the potential of capacitive sensing, supported by statistical modeling, as a non-invasive, cost-effective technique for offline classification and monitoring of wear debris in transmission systems. Understanding the mechanical behavior of frozen clay subgrade soils was essential for ensuring the safe and stable operation of transportation lines. However, the influence of remolding water content w on this behavior remained unclear. To address this gap, this study examined the effect of w through monotonic triaxial testing. Three typical remolding water contents (w = 19%, 27.5% and 35%) and three confining pressures (σ3 = 200 kPa, 700 kPa and 1200 kPa) were considered. Results showed that the mechanical behavior of frozen clay soils displayed a clear dependence on w, which was controlled by microstructural evolution. As w increased, the shear strength qmax, resilient modulus E0 and cohesion c increased, which resulted from the progressive development of ice bonding within the shear plane. A threshold w value was found at wopt = 27.5%, marking a structural transition and separating the variations of qmax, E0 and c into two regimes. When w ≤ 27.5%, the soil fabric was controlled by clay aggregates. As w increased, the growth in ice cementation was confined within these aggregates, leading to limited increase in qmax, E0 and c. However, as w exceeded 27.5%, the soil fabric transitioned into a homogeneous matrix of dispersed clay particles. In this case, increasing w greatly promoted the development of an interconnected ice cementation network, thus significantly facilitating the increase in qmax, E0 and c. The friction angle φ decreased with w increasing, primarily due to the lubrication effect caused by the growing ice. In addition, the enhanced lubrication effect in the clay particle-dominated fabric (w > 27.5%) resulted in a larger reduction rate of φ. Regarding Poisson’s ratio v and dilation angle ψ, the w increase led to growth in both parameters. This phenomenon could be explained by the increased involvement of solid ice into the soil structure. Full article

Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films are widely valued for their excellent mechanical strength and low friction, but their performance significantly degrades at elevated temperatures, limiting practical applications in aerospace environments. In this work, we aimed to enhance the high-temperature tribological behavior of a-C:H films through controlled silicon (Si) doping. A series of a-C:H:Si films with varying Si contents were fabricated via direct current magnetron sputtering, and their microstructure, mechanical properties, and friction behavior were systematically evaluated from room temperature up to 400 °C. Results show that moderate Si doping (8.3 at.%) substantially enhances hardness and wear resistance, while enabling ultralow friction (as low as 0.0034) at 400 °C. This superior performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of transfer layer formation, preferential Si oxidation, and tribo-induced graphitization. This study provides new insights into the high-temperature lubrication mechanisms of Si-doped a-C:H films and demonstrates the critical role of Si content optimization, highlighting a viable strategy for extending the thermal stability and lifespan of solid-lubricating films. Friction Stress Analysis of Slag Film in Mold of Medium-Carbon Special Steel Square Billet

Non-uniform friction and lubrication are the key factors affecting the surface quality of the casting billet. Based on the three-layer structure of the casting powder in the mold, the frictional stress in the mold was calculated and analyzed by using the relationship between the frictional stress and the thickness and viscosity of the liquid slag film, and the lubrication state between the cast billet and the mold was evaluated. Based on the actual production data of 40Mn2 steel and combined with the numerical simulation results of the solidification and shrinkage process of the molten steel in the mold by ANSYS 2022 R1 software, the frictional stress on the cast billet in the mold was calculated. It was found that within the range of 44~300 mm from the meniscus, the friction between the cast billet and the mold was mainly liquid friction, and the friction stress value increased from 0 to 145 KPa. Within 300–720 mm from the meniscus, the billet shell is in direct contact with the mold. The friction between the cast billet and the mold is mainly solid-state friction, and the friction stress value increases from 10.6 KPa to 26.6 KPa. It indicates that the excessive frictional stress inside the mold causes poor lubrication of the cast billet. By reducing the taper of the mold and optimizing the physical and chemical properties of the protective powder, within the range of 44~550 mm from the meniscus, the friction between the cast billet and the mold is mainly liquid friction, and the friction stress value varies within the range of 0–200 Pa. It reduces the frictional stress inside the mold, improves the lubrication between the billet shell and the mold, and completely solves the problem of mesh cracks on the surface of 40Mn2 steel cast billets. The development of robust and scalable tablet manufacturing methods remains a key objective in pharmaceutical technology, especially when dealing with active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and excipients that exhibit suboptimal processing properties. This study evaluated two alternative manufacturing strategies for tablets containing sodium naproxen (20%, API), dolomite (65%, sustainable mineral filler), cellulose (7%), polyvinylpyrrolidone (5%, binder), and magnesium stearate (3%, lubricant). The direct compression method used a vibrating ball mill (SPEX SamplePrep 8000M), while the indirect method employed wet granulation using a pan granulator at different inclination angles. Physical properties of raw materials and granules were assessed, and final tablets were evaluated for mass, thickness, mechanical resistance, abrasiveness, and API content uniformity. Direct compression using vibratory mixing for 5–10 min (DT2, DT3) resulted in average tablet masses close to the target (0.260 g) and improved reproducibility compared to a reference V-type blender. Wet granulation produced tablets with the lowest abrasiveness (<1.0%) and minimal variability in dimensions and API content. The best uniformity (SD < 0.5%) was observed in batch IT2. Overall, vibratory mixing proved capable of achieving tablet quality comparable to that of wet granulation, while requiring fewer processing steps. This highlights its potential as an efficient and scalable alternative in solid dosage manufacturing. Full article

Graphite has great potential as a solid lubricant due to its low friction properties, but its poor adhesion to metal substrates limits its durability unless modified. This study explores the use of polydopamine (PDA), a bioinspired adhesive polymer, as an underlayer to enhance the adhesion and scratch resistance of graphite coatings applied to stainless steel (SS) substrates. Progressive load scratch tests were performed using a stainless steel ball counterface under normal loads ranging from 0.5 to 18 N. The PDA-modified coatings demonstrated significantly improved adhesion and durability, withstanding contact pressures up to 1.6 GPa without delamination or failure. In contrast, graphite-only coatings showed early coating loss, severe material transfer, and wide wear tracks. The PDA underlayer enhanced graphite flake compaction, reduced porosity, and preserved structural integrity under high contact stress. These findings demonstrate that PDA reinforcement enables robust, oil-free lubrication suitable for high-stress environments. Full article

Dispersion Stability and Tribological Properties of Cold Plasma-Modified h-BN Nanofluid

h-BN spherical nanoparticles, known as white graphene, have good anti-wear properties, long service life, chemical inertness, and stability, which provide superior lubricating performance as a solid additive item to nanofluids. However, the poor dispersion stability of h-BN nanoparticles in nanofluids is a bottleneck that restricts their application. Currently, to prepare h-BN nanofluids with good dispersion stability, a cold plasma (CP) modification of h-BN nanoparticles is proposed in this study. In this research, h-BN nanofluid with added surfactant (SNL), CP-modified h-BN nanofluid with N2 as the working gas (CP(N2)NL), and CP-modified h-BN nanofluid with O2 as the working gas (CP(O2)NL) were prepared, separately. The mechanism of the dispersion stability of CP-modified h-BN nanofluid was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the performance of CP-modified nanofluid was analyzed based on static observation of nanofluid, kinematic viscosity, and heat transfer properties. Finally, friction and wear experiments were conducted to further analyze the tribological performance of h-BN nanofluids based on the coefficient of friction, 3D surface morphology, surface roughness (Sa), scratches, and micro-morphology. The results show that CP-modified h-BN nanofluid has excellent dispersed suspension stability and can be statically placed for more than 336 h. The CP-modified h-BN nanofluid showed stable friction-reducing, anti-wear, and heat transfer performance, in which the coefficient of friction of h-BN nanofluid was about 0.66 before and after 24 h of settling. The Sa value of the sample was reduced by 31.6–49.2% in comparison with pure cottonseed oil (CO). Full article

Improving the energy release and safety of composite solid propellants is a key focus in energetic materials research. Graphene, with its excellent thermal conductivity and lubrication properties, is a promising additive. In this study, Al@AP core–shell particles doped with graphene were prepared via an in-situ deposition method. The structure, thermal decomposition, combustion, and safety performance of the graphene-doped Al@AP samples were investigated. Results showed that AP effectively coated aluminium to form a typical core-shell structure, with graphene uniformly loaded into the framework. Graphene contents of 1.0 and 4.0 wt.% reduced AP’s thermal decomposition temperature by 0.97 and 16.68 °C, respectively. Closed-bomb and laser ignition tests revealed that pressure rise rates and combustion intensity increased with graphene content up to 1.0 wt.% but declined beyond that. Peak pressure reached 114.65 kPa at 1.0 wt.% graphene, and the maximum pressure increase rate was 13.29 kPa ms−1 at 2.0 wt.%. Additionally, graphene significantly improved safety by reducing sensitivity to impact and friction. The enhanced performance is attributed to graphene’s large surface area and excellent thermal and electrical conductivity that promote AP decomposition and combustion, combined with its lubricating effect that enhances safety, though excessive graphene may hinder these benefits. This study provides balanced design criteria for graphene-doped Al@AP as solid propellants. Full article
