In recent years, research on plant disease detection has combined artificial intelligence, hyperspectral imaging, unmanned aerial vehicle remote sensing, and other technologies, promoting the transformation of pest and disease control in smart agriculture towards digitalization and artificial intelligence. This review systematically elaborates on the research status of non-destructive detection techniques used for plant disease identification and detection, mainly introducing the following two types of methods: spectral technology and imaging technology. It also elaborates, in detail, on the principles and application examples of each technology and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of these technologies. This review clearly indicates that non-destructive detection techniques can achieve plant disease and pest detection quickly, accurately, and without damage. In the future, integrating multiple non-destructive detection technologies, developing portable detection devices, and combining more efficient data processing methods will become the core development directions of this field. Consumer-accessible and user-friendly smart products such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, have become widely used, adaptable, and acceptable devices to observe, assess, measure, and explore urban and natural environments. A drone’s relatively low cost and flexibility in the level of expertise required to operate it has enabled users from novice to industry professionals to adapt a malleable technology to various disciplines. This review examines the academic literature and maps how drones are currently being used in 93 rural and regional city councils in New South Wales, Australia. Through a systematic review of the academic literature and scrutiny of current drone use in these councils using publicly available information found on council websites, findings reveal potential uses of drone technology for local governments who want to engage with smart technology devices. We looked at how drones were being used in the management of the council’s environment; health and safety initiatives; infrastructure; planning; social and community programmes; and waste and recycling. These findings suggest that drone technology is increasingly being utilised in rural and regional areas. While the focus is on rural and regional New South Wales, a review of the academic literature and local council websites provides a snapshot of drone use examples that holds global relevance for local councils in urban and remote areas seeking to incorporate drone technology into their daily practice of city, town, or region governance. This paper presents a high-fidelity multi-physics dynamic model for electric vehicles, serving as a fundamental building block for intelligent vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration systems. The model accurately captures complex vehicle dynamics of the powertrain, battery, and regenerative braking, enabling precise energy consumption evaluation, including in AI-driven V2G scenarios. Validated using real-world data from a Citroën Ami operating on urban routes in Naples, Italy, it achieved exceptional accuracy with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.28% for dynamic state of charge prediction. This robust framework provides an essential foundation for AI-driven digital twin technologies in V2G applications, significantly advancing sustainable transportation and smart grid integration through predictive simulation. Its versatility supports diverse fleet applications, from residential energy management and coordinated charging optimization to commercial car sharing operations, leveraging backup power during peak demand or grid outages, so to maximize distributed battery storage utilization. Traffic congestion poses a significant challenge to modern urban environments, impacting both driver satisfaction and road safety. This paper investigates the effectiveness of a smart traffic light system (STL), a solution developed under the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) initiative by the Ministry of Works Malaysia, to address these issues in Malaysia. The system integrates a network of sensors, AI-enabled cameras, and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to gather real-time data on traffic volume and vehicle classification at congested intersections. This data is utilized to dynamically adjust traffic light timings, prioritizing traffic flow on heavily congested roads while maintaining safety standards. To evaluate the system’s performance, a comprehensive study was conducted at a selected intersection. Traffic patterns were automatically analyzed using camera systems, and the performance of the STL was compared to that of traditional traffic signal systems. The average travel time from the start to the end intersection was measured and compared. Preliminary findings indicate that the STL significantly reduces travel times and improves overall traffic flow at the intersection, with average travel time reductions ranging from 7.1% to 28.6%, depending on site-specific factors. While further research is necessary to quantify the full extent of the system’s impact, these initial results demonstrate the promising potential of STL technology to enhance urban mobility and more efficient and safer roadways by moving beyond traditional traffic signal functionalities. The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) operates in an environment characterized by asymmetric security threats, where centralized vulnerabilities create a critical imbalance that can be disproportionately exploited by attackers. This study addresses this imbalance by proposing a symmetrical security framework that integrates Blockchain and Federated Learning (FL) to restore equilibrium in the Vehicle–Road–Cloud ecosystem. The evolution toward sixth-generation (6G) technologies amplifies both the potential of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications and its inherent security risks. The proposed framework achieves a delicate balance between robust security and operational efficiency. By leveraging blockchain’s symmetrical and decentralized distribution of trust, the framework ensures data and model integrity. Concurrently, the privacy-preserving approach of FL balances the need for collaborative intelligence with the imperative of safeguarding sensitive vehicle data. A novel Cloud Proxy Re-Encryption Offloading (CPRE-IoV) algorithm is introduced to facilitate efficient model updates. The architecture employs a partitioned blockchain and a smart contract-driven FL pipeline to symmetrically neutralize threats from malicious nodes. Finally, extensive simulations validate the framework’s effectiveness in establishing a resilient and symmetrically secure foundation for next-generation IoV networks. Full article

Winter wheat yield prediction is critical for optimizing field management plans and guiding agricultural production. To address the limitations of conventional manual yield estimation methods, including low efficiency and poor interpretability, this study innovatively proposes an intelligent yield estimation method based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). A comprehensive two-factor (fertilization × irrigation) controlled field experiment was designed to thoroughly validate the applicability and effectiveness of this method. The experimental design comprised two irrigation treatments, sufficient irrigation (C) at 750 m3 ha−1 and deficit irrigation (M) at 450 m3 ha−1, along with five fertilization treatments (at a rate of 180 kg N ha−1): (1) organic fertilizer alone, (2) organic–inorganic fertilizer blend at a 7:3 ratio, (3) organic–inorganic fertilizer blend at a 3:7 ratio, (4) inorganic fertilizer alone, and (5) no fertilizer control. The experimental protocol employed a DJI M300 RTK unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a multispectral sensor to systematically acquire high-resolution growth imagery of winter wheat across critical phenological stages, from heading to maturity. The acquired multispectral imagery was meticulously annotated using the Labelme professional annotation tool to construct a comprehensive experimental dataset comprising over 2000 labeled images. These annotated data were subsequently employed to train an enhanced CNN model based on ResNet50 architecture, which achieved automated generation of panicle density maps and precise panicle counting, thereby realizing yield prediction. Field experimental results demonstrated significant yield variations among fertilization treatments under sufficient irrigation, with the 3:7 organic–inorganic blend achieving the highest actual yield (9363.38 ± 468.17 kg ha−1) significantly outperforming other treatments (p < 0.05), confirming the synergistic effects of optimized nitrogen and water management. The enhanced CNN model exhibited superior performance, with an average accuracy of 89.0–92.1%, representing a 3.0% improvement over YOLOv8. Notably, model accuracy showed significant correlation with yield levels (p < 0.05), suggesting more distinct panicle morphological features in high-yield plots that facilitated model identification. The CNN’s yield predictions demonstrated strong agreement with the measured values, maintaining mean relative errors below 10%. Particularly outstanding performance was observed for the organic fertilizer with full irrigation (5.5% error) and the 7:3 organic-inorganic blend with sufficient irrigation (8.0% error), indicating that the CNN network is more suitable for these management regimes. These findings provide a robust technical foundation for precision farming applications in winter wheat production. Future research will focus on integrating this technology into smart agricultural management systems to enable real-time, data-driven decision making at the farm scale. Full article

Understanding automated vehicle (AV) behavior in complex road environments and user attitudes in such contexts is critical for their safe and effective integration into smart cities. Despite growing deployment, limited public data exist on AV performance in construction zones; highly dynamic settings marked by irregular lane markings, shifting detours, and unpredictable human presence. This study investigates AV behavior in these conditions through qualitative, video-based analysis of user-documented experiences on YouTube, focusing on Tesla’s supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Waymo systems. Spoken narration, captions, and subtitles were examined to evaluate AV perception, decision-making, control, and interaction with humans. Findings reveal that while AVs excel in structured tasks such as obstacle detection, lane tracking, and cautious speed control, they face challenges in interpreting temporary infrastructure, responding to unpredictable human actions, and navigating low-visibility environments. These limitations not only impact performance but also influence user trust and acceptance. The study underscores the need for continued technological refinement, improved infrastructure design, and user-informed deployment strategies. By addressing current shortcomings, this research offers critical insights into AV readiness for real-world conditions and contributes to safer, more adaptive urban mobility systems. Full article

As an emerging energy-saving approach, bio-inspired drag reduction technology has become a key research direction for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This study introduces the latest research progress on bio-inspired microstructured surfaces in the field of underwater drag reduction, focusing on analyzing the drag reduction mechanism, preparation process, and application effect of the three major technological paths; namely, bio-inspired non-smooth surfaces, bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces, and bio-inspired modified coatings. Bio-inspired non-smooth surfaces can significantly reduce the wall shear stress by regulating the flow characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer through microstructure design. Bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces form stable gas–liquid interfaces through the construction of micro-nanostructures and reduce frictional resistance by utilizing the slip boundary effect. Bio-inspired modified coatings, on the other hand, realize the synergistic function of drag reduction and antifouling through targeted chemical modification of materials and design of micro-nanostructures. Although these technologies have made significant progress in drag reduction performance, their engineering applications still face bottlenecks such as manufacturing process complexity, gas layer stability, and durability. Future research should focus on the analysis of drag reduction mechanisms and optimization of material properties under multi-physical field coupling conditions, the development of efficient and low-cost manufacturing processes, and the enhancement of surface stability and adaptability through dynamic self-healing coatings and smart response materials. It is hoped that the latest research status of bio-inspired drag reduction technology reviewed in this study provides a theoretical basis and technical reference for the sustainable development and energy-saving design of ships and underwater vehicles. Urban road traffic congestion poses significant challenges to sustainable mobility in smart cities. Traditional traffic light systems, reliant on static or semi-fixed timers, fail to adapt to dynamic traffic conditions, exacerbating congestion and limiting inclusivity. To address these limitations, this paper proposes H-ATLM (a hybrid adaptive traffic lights management), a system utilizing the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) reinforcement learning algorithm to optimize traffic light timings dynamically based on real-time data. The system integrates advanced sensing technologies, such as cameras and inductive loops, to monitor traffic conditions and adaptively adjust signal phases. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements, including reductions in congestion (up to 50%), increases in throughput (up to 149%), and decreases in clearance times (up to 84%). These findings open the door for integrating accessibility-focused features such as adaptive signaling for accessible vehicles, dedicated lanes for paratransit services, and prioritized traffic flows for inclusive mobility. In response to the challenges of urbanization, digitalization, and the e-commerce surge intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, Smart Urban Logistics (SUL) has become a key framework for addressing last-mile delivery issues, congestion, and environmental impacts. This study introduces a System Dynamics (SD)-based approach to investigate how urban logistics and access management policies may interact. At the center, there is a Causal Loop Diagram (CLD) that illustrates dynamic interdependencies among fleet composition, access regulations, logistics productivity, and environmental externalities. The CLD is a conceptual basis for future stock-and-flow simulations to support data-driven decision-making. The approach highlights the importance of route optimization, dynamic access control, and smart parking management systems as strategic tools, increasingly enabled by Industry 4.0 technologies, such as IoT, big data analytics, AI, and cyber-physical systems, which support real-time monitoring and adaptive planning. In alignment with the Industry 5.0 paradigm, this technological integration is paired with social and environmental sustainability goals. The study also emphasizes public–private collaboration in designing access policies and promoting alternative fuel vehicle adoption, supported by specific incentives. These coordinated efforts contribute to achieving the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, fostering a cleaner, more efficient, and inclusive urban logistics ecosystem. Full article

The accelerated growth of the transport sector has increased oil consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, intensifying global environmental challenges. The electrification of transportation has emerged as a key strategy to achieve sustainability targets, with electric vehicles (EVs) expected to account for 50% of global car sales by 2035. However, widespread adoption requires smart infrastructure capable of enabling dynamic in-motion charging. In this context, Electric Road Systems (ERSs), particularly those based on Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technologies, offer a promising solution by transferring energy between road-embedded transmitters and vehicle-mounted receivers. This study assesses the structural response and service life of conventional and electrified asphalt pavement sections representative of the Spanish road network. Several standard pavement configurations were analyzed under heavy traffic (dual axles, 13 tons) using a hybrid approach combining mechanistic–empirical multilayer modeling and three-dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. The electrified designs integrate prefabricated charging units (CUs) placed at a 9 cm depth, disrupting the structural continuity of the pavement. The results reveal stress concentrations at the CU–asphalt interface and service life reductions of up to 50% in semiflexible pavements. Semirigid sections performed better, with average reductions close to 40%. These findings are based on numerical simulations of standard Spanish sections and do not include experimental validation. In the current context, where environmental concerns are gaining increased attention, the transition toward sustainable urban mobility stands out as a necessary and responsible step. Technological advancements over the past decade have brought private autonomous vehicles, particularly those defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers Levels 4 and 5, into focus as promising solutions for mitigating road congestion and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the extent to which Autonomous Vehicles can fulfill this potential depends largely on user acceptance, patterns of use, and their integration within broader green energy and sustainability policies. The present paper aims to develop an integrated conceptual model that links behavioral determinants to environmental outcomes, assessing how individuals’ intention to adopt private autonomous vehicles can contribute to sustainable urban mobility. The model integrates five psychosocial determinants—perceived usefulness, trust in technology, social influence, environmental concern, and perceived behavioral control—with contextual variables such as energy source, infrastructure availability, and public policy. These components interact to predict users’ intention to adopt AVs and their perceived contribution to urban sustainability. Methodologically, the study builds on a narrative synthesis of the literature and proposes a framework applicable to empirical validation through structural equation modeling (SEM). The model draws on established frameworks such as Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Theory of Planned Behavior, and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, incorporating constructs including perceived usefulness, trust in technology, social influence, environmental concern, and perceived behavioral control, constructs later to be examined in relation to key contextual variables, including the energy source powering Autonomous Vehicles—such as electricity from mixed or renewable grids, hydrogen, or hybrid systems—and the broader policy environment (regulatory frameworks, infrastructure investment, fiscal incentives, and alignment with climate and mobility strategies and others). The research provides relevant directions for public policy and behavioral interventions in support of the development of clean and smart urban transport in the age of automation. Full article

This paper proposes a general workflow for collecting and analyzing open data from Bicycle Sharing Systems (BSSs) that was developed using data from the Valenbisi system, operated in Valencia by the French company JCDecaux; however, the stages of the proposed workflow are service-independent and can be applied broadly. Cycling has become an increasingly popular mode of transportation, leading to the emergence of BSSs in modern cities. Parallel to this, Smart City solutions have been implemented using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, such as embedded sensors and GPS-based communication systems, which have become essential to everyday life. When public transportation services or bicycle sharing systems are used, real-time information about the services is provided to customers, including vehicle tracking based on GPS technology and the availability of bikes via sensors installed at bike rental stations. The bike stations were examined from two different perspectives: first, their daily usage, and second, the types of facilities located in their surroundings. Based on these two approaches, the overlap between the clustering results was analyzed—specifically, the similarity in how stations could be grouped and the correlation between their usage and locations. To enhance the raw data retrieved from the service provider’s official API, the stations were annotated based on OpenStreetMap and Overpass API data. Data visualization was created using Tableau from Salesforce. Based on the results, an agreement of 62% was found between the results of the two different clustering approaches. Full article

The integration of renewable energy with circular economy strategies offers effective pathways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing local energy independence. This study analyses three real-world projects implemented in Spain that exemplify this synergy. LIFE Smart Agromobility converts pig manure into biomethane to power farm vehicles, using anaerobic digestion and microalgae-based upgrading systems. Smart Met Value refines biogas from a wastewater treatment plant in Guadalajara to produce high-purity biomethane for the municipal fleet, demonstrating the viability of energy recovery from sewage sludge. The UNDERGY project addresses green hydrogen storage by repurposing a depleted natural gas reservoir, showing geochemical and geomechanical feasibility for seasonal underground hydrogen storage. Each project utilises regionally available resources to produce clean fuels—biomethane or hydrogen—while mitigating methane and CO2 emissions. Results show significant energy recovery potential: biomethane production can replace a substantial portion of fossil fuel use in rural and urban settings, while hydrogen storage provides a scalable solution for surplus renewable energy. These applied cases demonstrate not only the technical feasibility but also the socio-economic benefits of integrating waste valorisation and energy transition technologies. Together, they represent replicable models for sustainable development and energy resilience across Europe and beyond. Full article

With the rapid development of smart connected vehicles, vehicle network communications demand high-speed data transmission to support advanced automotive services. Millimeter Wave (mmWave) communication offers fast data rates, strong anti-interference capabilities, high precision localization and low-latency, making it suitable for high-speed in-vehicle communications. However, mmWave communication performance in vehicular networks is hindered by high path loss and frequent beam alignment updates, significantly degrading the coverage and connectivity of vehicle nodes (VNs). In addition, atmospheric propagation attenuation further deteriorates signal quality and limits system performance due to raindrop absorption and scattering. Therefore, the pure mmWave networks cannot meet the high requirements of highway vehicular communications. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a hybrid mmWave and microwave network architecture to improve VNs’ coverage and connectivity performances through the strategic deployment of Roadside Units (RSUs). Using Radio Access Technology (RAT), mmWave and microwave RSUs are symmetrically deployed on both sides of the road to communicate with VNs located at the road center. This symmetric RSUs deployment significantly improves the network reliability. Analytical expressions for coverage and connectivity in the proposed hybrid networks are derived and compared with the pure mmWave networks, accounting for rainfall attenuation. The study results show that the proposed hybrid network shows better performance than the pure mmWave network in both coverage and connectivity. Full article
