Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) could increase pulmonary artery pressure. However, the clinical consequences vary, mainly depending on comorbidities. Patients with pulmonary hypertension associated with lung diseases (World Health Organization (WHO) Group 3 pulmonary hypertension) are particularly vulnerable increases in pulmonary artery pressure. Managing pulmonary hypertension in this specific patient population presents a considerable challenge. While positive airway pressure therapy for OSA has shown promise in improving pulmonary hemodynamics in patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, evidence is lacking for similar improvements in those with other pulmonary diseases and hypoventilation disorders. Furthermore, pulmonary-artery-specific therapies may carry a risk of clinical worsening in this group. Weight management and new pharmacotherapy have together emerged as a crucial intervention, demonstrating benefits for both OSA and pulmonary hemodynamics. We reviewed key studies that provide insights into the influence of OSA on WHO Group 3 pulmonary hypertension and the clinical management of both conditions. Full article

Our study was conducted in the Valle Nuevo National Park and included four habitat classes: tussock grass (Sabapa), pine forest (Pinoc), broadleaf forest (Boslat), and agricultural ecosystem (Ecoag). We had two main objectives: to comparatively describe millipede communities and to determine the relationships between population density/diversity and soil physicochemical variables. The research was cross-sectional and non-manipulative, with a descriptive and correlational scope; sampling followed a stratified systematic design, with eight transects and 32 quadrats of 1 m2, covering 21.7 km. We found a sandy loam soil with an extremely acidic pH. The highest population density of millipedes was recorded in Sabapa, and the lowest in Ecoag. The highest alpha diversity was shared between Boslat (Margalef = 1.72) and Pinoc (Shannon = 2.53); Sabapa and Boslat showed the highest Jaccard similarity (0.56). The null hypothesis test using the weighted Shannon index revealed a statistically significant difference in diversity between the Boslat–Sabapa and Pinoc–Sabapa pairs. Two of the species recorded highly significant indicator values (IndVal) for two habitat classes. We found significant correlations (p < 0.05) between various soil physicochemical variables and millipede density and diversity. Full article

The tolerance of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) to plant-derived secondary compounds gradually increases with instars. Therefore, even if plant-based additives are applied at early stages, such as the second or third instar, they may have a differential impact on the ecofriendly control of S. frugiperda. In this study, S. frugiperda larvae were exposed to vanillic acid or sinapic acid at the second and third instar, and physiological and growth parameters were measured. The results showed that the effects of vanillic acid treatment on S. frugiperda were similar at the different instars. They can significantly affect the larval carboxylesterase, glutathione S-transferase, and mixed-function oxidase activities. By reducing larval food intake, food conversion, and utilization efficiency while increasing the food consumption rate, it inhibits weight accumulation. This leads to a significant extension of the development of both the larval and pupal stages, and the adult longevity was reduced. Treatment with sinapic acid at the second instar extended the negative effects on the pupal duration of S. frugiperda when compared to treatment at the third instar, but did not affect adult longevity. Therefore, vanillic acid treatment at the second or third instar stage, can play an important role in the ecofriendly control process of S. frugiperda. Lotus corniculatus L. is a valuable fodder legume, recognized for its ecological adaptability and high potential for production and fodder quality. In this study, 18 genotypes collected from wild flora were analyzed to highlight genetic variability and facilitate the selection of genotypes with superior potential. The collection area was in the western part of Romania and featured a diverse topography, including parts of the Banat Plain, the Banat Hills, and the Southern and Western Carpathians. The genotypes selected from the wild flora were cultivated and evaluated for morpho-productive and forage quality traits, including pod weight, average number of seeds/pods, green mass production, and protein percentage. PCA highlighted the main components explaining the variability, and K-means clustering allowed for the identification of groups of genotypes with similar performances. ANOVA showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) for all traits analyzed. According to the results, genotypes LV-LC-3, LV-LC-4, LV-LC-6, and LV-LC-16 showed high productive potential and were highlighted as the most valuable for advancing in the breeding program. The moderate relationships between traits confirm the importance of integrated selection. The identified genetic variability and selected genotypes support the implementation of effective breeding strategies to obtain high-performance Lotus corniculatus L., adapted to local soil and climate conditions and with a superior forage yield. Clinical and Cognitive Improvement Following Treatment with a Hemp-Derived, Full-Spectrum, High-Cannabidiol Product in Patients with Anxiety: An Open-Label Pilot Study

Background/Objectives: Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid touted for a variety of medical benefits, including alleviation of anxiety. While legalization of hemp-derived products in the United States (containing ≤0.3% delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol [d9-THC] by weight) has led to a rapid increase in the commercialization of hemp-derived CBD products, most therapeutic claims have not been substantiated using clinical trials. This trial aimed to assess the impact of 6 weeks of treatment with a proprietary hemp-derived, full-spectrum, high-CBD sublingual solution similar to those available in the marketplace in patients with anxiety. Methods: An open-label pilot clinical trial (NCT04286594) was conducted in 12 patients with at least moderate levels of anxiety. Patients self-administered a hemp-derived, high-CBD sublingual solution twice daily during the 6-week trial (target daily dose: 30 mg/day CBD). Clinical change over time relative to baseline was assessed for anxiety, mood, sleep, and quality of life, as well as changes in cognitive performance on measures of executive function and memory. Safety and tolerability of the study product were also evaluated. Results: Patients reported significant reductions in anxiety symptoms over time. Concurrent improvements in mood, sleep, and relevant quality of life domains were also observed, along with stable or improved performance on all neurocognitive measures. Few side effects were reported, and no serious adverse events occurred. Conclusions: These pilot findings provide initial support for the efficacy and tolerability of the hemp-derived, high-CBD product in patients with moderate-to-severe levels of anxiety. Double-blind, placebo-controlled studies are indicated to obtain robust data regarding efficacy and tolerability of these types of products for anxiety. Full article

Background/Objectives: Acrylamide is a probably carcinogenic to humans that naturally forms during the thermal processing of foods. An individual’s lifestyle—especially dietary habits and physical activity—may influence the severity of acrylamide’s adverse health effects. This study aimed to examine the relationship between adolescents’ dietary and exercise behaviors and their dietary acrylamide exposure and associated health risks. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 370 high school students in Türkiye. Data were collected using the Nutrition Exercise Behavior Scale (NEBS) and a retrospective 24-h dietary recall questionnaire. Acrylamide exposure was calculated based on food intake to estimate carcinogenic (CR) and non-corcinogenic (target hazard quotient: THQ) health risks and analyzed in relation to NEBS scores. Results: Findings indicated that while adolescents are beginning to adopt healthy eating and exercise habits, these behaviors are not yet consistent. Emotional eating and unhealthy food choices still occur. Higher acrylamide exposure and risk values were observed in boys and underweight individuals. This can be explained mainly by the fact that boys consume more of certain foods—especially bread, which contains relatively higher levels of acrylamide—than girls do, and that underweight individuals have lower body weights despite consuming similar amounts of food as other groups. Bread products emerged as the primary source of daily acrylamide intake. Positive correlations were found between NEBS total and subscale scores and acrylamide exposure and health risk values. Conclusions: The study demonstrates a significant association between adolescents’ health behaviors and acrylamide exposure. These results underscore potential public health concerns regarding acrylamide intake during adolescence and emphasize the need for targeted nutritional interventions to reduce risk and promote sustainable healthy behaviors. Seafood contamination by heavy metals is a growing public health concern, particularly in regions like Tunisia where seafood is a major dietary component. This study assessed concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the muscle tissue of the red shrimp Parapenaeus longirostris, collected in 2023 from four coastal regions: Bizerte, Monastir, Kerkennah, and Gabes. Metal analysis was conducted using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. This species was chosen due to its ecological and economic importance. The study sites were chosen based on their differing levels of industrial, urban, and agricultural influence, providing a representative overview of regional contamination patterns. Mean concentrations were 1.04 µg/g for Zn, 0.59 µg/g for Cu, 1.56 µg/g for Pb, and 0.21 µg/g for Cd (dry weight). Pb was the most prevalent metal across sites. Statistically significant variation was observed only for Cu (p = 0.0334). All metal concentrations were below international safety limits set by FAO/WHO and the European Union. Compared to similar studies, the levels reported were similar or slightly lower. Human health risk was evaluated using target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and cancer risk (CR) values. For adults, THQ ranged from 5.44 × 10−6 to 8.43 × 10−4, while for children it ranged from 2.40 × 10−5 to 3.72 × 10−3. HI values were also well below 1, indicating negligible non-carcinogenic risk. CR values for Cd and Pb in both adults and children fell within the acceptable risk range (10−6 to <10−4), suggesting no significant carcinogenic concern. This study provides the first field-based dataset on metal contamination in P. longirostris from Tunisia, contributing valuable insights for seafood safety monitoring and public health protection. Community detection is widely recognized as a crucial area of research in network science. In recent years, multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have been extensively employed in community detection tasks. Continuous coding is able to transform the discrete problem into a continuous one. However, conventional continuous coding methodologies frequently disregard the relationships between node structures, resulting in low-quality encoded populations that subsequently diminish community detection performance. Furthermore, continuous coding needs to be decoded into to label-based coding during the optimization process to compute objective functions. To alleviate this, we design the surrogate model adaptive switching strategy that selects the optimal surrogate model for the task. Subsequently, the surrogate-assisted evolutionary multi-objective community detection algorithm with core node learning is proposed. The core node learning method is employed to enhance the connection between nodes in augmented sequential coding, which helps initialize the population using the node similarity matrix. The core nodes of the network are subsequently identified based on node weights, which can be utilized to construct a surrogate model between the continuous coding and the objective function. The surrogate model is updated during the optimization process, which effectively improves both the accuracy and efficiency of community detection tasks. Experimental results obtained from synthetic and real-world networks demonstrate that the proposed algorithm exhibits superior performance compared to seven community detection algorithms. Research has widely validated three-band spectral index as a simple, valid, and highly accurate method of estimating the copper content of soil. However, selecting the best band combination from hundreds of thousands, even millions of candidate combinations in hyperspectral data, is a very complicated problem. To address this issue, this study collected a total of 170 soil samples from the Aktas copper-gold mining area in Fuyun County, Xinjiang, China. Then, two algorithms including Competitive Weighted Resampling (CARS) and Stepwise Regression Analysis (STE) were applied to pick the bands from the original and first-order derivative spectra, respectively. A three-band index model was developed using the selected feature bands to estimate soil copper content. Results showed the first-order derivative spectrum transforms the spectral curve into a sharper one, with more peaks and valleys, which is beneficial for increasing the correlation between bands and copper content compared with the original spectrum. Moreover, integrating first-order derivative spectroscopy with CARS makes it possible to precisely identify key spectral bands and outperforms the dimensionality-reduction capabilities compared with the integration of STE. This strategy drastically reduces the time spent screening and is proven to have similar model accuracy, as compared to the individual group lifting method. Specifically, it reduces the duration of an 8 h task down to a mere 2 s. An intelligent screening of three-band indices is proposed in this study as a method of rapidly estimating copper content in soil. Full article

Transfer Learning-Based Ensemble of CNNs and Vision Transformers for Accurate Melanoma Diagnosis and Image Retrieval

Background/Objectives: Melanoma is an aggressive type of skin cancer that poses serious health risks if not detected in its early stages. Although early diagnosis enables effective treatment, delays can result in life-threatening consequences. Traditional diagnostic processes predominantly rely on the subjective expertise of dermatologists, which can lead to variability and time inefficiencies. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for automated systems that can accurately classify melanoma lesions and retrieve visually similar cases to support clinical decision-making. Methods: This study proposes a transfer learning (TL)-based deep learning (DL) framework for the classification of melanoma images and the enhancement of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems. Pre-trained models including DenseNet121, InceptionV3, Vision Transformer (ViT), and Xception were employed to extract deep feature representations. These features were integrated using a weighted fusion strategy and classified through an Ensemble learning approach designed to capitalize on the complementary strengths of the individual models. The performance of the proposed system was evaluated using classification accuracy and mean Average Precision (mAP) metrics. Results: Experimental evaluations demonstrated that the proposed Ensemble model significantly outperformed each standalone model in both classification and retrieval tasks. The Ensemble approach achieved a classification accuracy of 95.25%. In the CBIR task, the system attained a mean Average Precision (mAP) score of 0.9538, indicating high retrieval effectiveness. The performance gains were attributed to the synergistic integration of features from diverse model architectures through the ensemble and fusion strategies. Conclusions: The findings underscore the effectiveness of TL-based DL models in automating melanoma image classification and enhancing CBIR systems. The integration of deep features from multiple pre-trained models using an Ensemble approach not only improved accuracy but also demonstrated robustness in feature generalization. This approach holds promise for integration into clinical workflows, offering improved diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in the early detection of melanoma. Full article

Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a growing public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Although prediabetes is a major risk factor for T2D, it remains largely underdiagnosed and untreated. Structured lifestyle interventions have proven effective in preventing diabetes, but their feasibility within the Brazilian public health system remains unclear. Methods: This multicenter pilot randomized controlled trial assessed the feasibility of a culturally adapted lifestyle intervention (PROVEN-DIA) across the five regions of Brazil. A total of 220 adults at high risk for T2D were randomized to an intervention group or a control group (usual care) and followed for three months. Both groups received similar educational content on healthy eating and physical activity, but the intervention group participated in a structured and personalized lifestyle program with regular follow-up sessions. The primary outcome was adherence to dietary recommendations, assessed using the BALANCE Index—a validated dietary score (range: 0–40) based on the Brazilian Cardioprotective Diet that classifies foods into color-coded groups according to nutritional quality—along with engagement in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Secondary outcomes included diet quality (DQIR), anthropometric and metabolic parameters. Results: Feasibility was demonstrated by a 93.2% retention rate (n = 205). There was no significant difference in the primary outcome (simultaneous improvement in diet and MVPA). However, the PROVEN-DIA group exhibited significantly greater improvements in diet quality, with a 2.8-point increase in the BALANCE Index (vs. 0.5 in the control, p = 0.03), and a significant improvement in the DQIR (p < 0.001). No significant differences between groups were observed in MVPA, HbA1C, glycaemia, or body weight. Conclusions: The PROVEN-DIA intervention proved feasible within the Brazilian public health context, resulting in significant improvements in dietary quality among individuals at high risk for T2D. A larger trial with longer follow-up is warranted to evaluate its effectiveness in preventing the progression to diabetes. However, to enhance physical activity outcomes, specific adaptations and targeted strategies may be required to better support participant engagement in exercise. Full article

Background and Objectives: Anemia and stunting are major public health concerns for young Indonesian children. Limited information is available from studies on multi-micronutrient supplements in Indonesia. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of 12-month multi-micronutrient powder (MNP) supplementation on serum hemoglobin levels, anemia, and growth. Methods: A randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled study was performed, including 232 eligible children aged 8–10 months old. Children with severe anemia or stunting/those classed as underweight were not included as subjects. The study was performed in a low-socioeconomic-status community in Jakarta. With an active-to-placebo ratio of 60:40, 139 subjects received MNP sachets twice/day, and 93 subjects received placebo sachets, mixed with complementary food. The outcome parameters were hemoglobin level, anemia, and growth indicators. Per-protocol analysis was performed for 179 (intervention: 110; control: 69) subjects. Results: There were no differences at baseline between the groups, except for the weight-for-length z-scores (WLZ). Upon intervention, the serum hemoglobin level and anemia proportion did not change significantly within the group, and no significant differences were found between the groups (p > 0.05). However, subgroup analysis of non-anemic children at baseline showed a significant increase in hemoglobin levels in the youngest age group (8.0–8.9 months old) receiving MNP compared to placebo (0.13 vs. −0.79, p = 0.031). Iron deficiency anemia proportion showed a similar upward trend upon intervention in both groups. No significant differences in growth were found between both groups. Conclusions: This study failed to find a significant effect of 12-month MNP supplementation on serum hemoglobin level, anemia, and growth. Full article

Extensive beef systems in the tropics are the cheapest but require more land and longer rearing times with environmental impact. This study was carried out to evaluate three beef bull’s production systems in tropics: pasture-based system (PASTU), feedlot system immediately after weaning (FELOT) and a system with the combination of rearing in pasture and finishing in feedlot (PRIME) on animal performance and carcass characteristics of 30 bulls crossbred Angus x Nellore. The final weight, average daily gain and carcass weight (hot and cold) were higher (p < 0.050) for the FELOT system, intermediate for the PRIME system and lowest for the PASTU system. The carcass dressing (hot and cold), dripping losses, ratio (Longissimus dorsi) and degree of finishing were similar (p > 0.050). The carcass pH24h was higher for the PRIME system (p < 0.010). Subcutaneous fat thickness (mm) was lower for the PASTU system (p < 0.050). Marbling was better for the PRIME system. The tissular composition was similar among systems related to muscle percentage but PASTU showed the highest bone percentage (p < 0.050) and lowest of adipose (p < 0.050). PRIME enable cost-effective, fast beef production with less environmental impact. Full article

Forming interdisciplinary research teams is challenging, especially when the pool of candidates is large and/or the addressed research projects require multi-disciplinary expertise. Based on their previous research outputs, like published work, a data-driven team formation procedure selects the researchers that are likely to work well together while covering all areas and offering all skills required by the multi-disciplinary topic. The description of the research team formation problem proposed in this paper uses novel quantitative metrics about the team candidates computed from bibliographic metadata records. The proposed methodology first analyzes the metadata fields that provide useful information and then computes four synthetic indicators regarding candidates’ skills and their interpersonal traits. Interdisciplinary teams are formed by solving a complex combinatorial multi-objective weighted set cover optimization problem, defined as equations involving the synthetic indicators. Problem solving uses the NSGA-II genetic algorithm. The proposed methodology is validated and compared with other similar approaches using a dataset on researchers from Politehnica University of Timisoara extracted from the IEEE Xplore database. Experimental results show that the method can identify potential research teams in situations for which other related algorithms fail. Full article

The Influence of Ultraviolet-C Light Pretreatment on Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) Quality During Storage

Blackcurrant is a notable superfruit in Europe, and its vitamin C content surpasses the well-known blueberry superfruit. However, due to its short shelf life during storage, consumption is mainly accounted by frozen berries, extracts, and concentrates. This study applied an intensity of 1.2 W/m2 UVC with different durations, including control (non-treated), UVC irradiation for 0.5 h (0.5 h treatment), UVC irradiation for 1 h (1 h treatment), and UVC pretreatment for 2 h (2 h treatment) to blackcurrant berries before storage. Fundamental physical (firmness and weight loss) and physicochemical characteristics (SSC, pH, and acids), microbial population changes, total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, and specific phenolic compound changes were evaluated every five days over a twenty-day storage period. The results indicated that the longer the UVC pretreatment, the lower the water weight losses during storage. Meanwhile, the UVC pretreatment significantly affected the blackcurrant soluble solid content, resulting in higher soluble solid contents detected in the blackcurrants with the higher doses of UVC. For the mold population control, UVC effects were highly correlated with the pretreatment duration. However, UVC did not have a significant influence on the berry pH and acid contents, but the storage length slightly increased the pH and decreased the acids. At the same time, UVC pretreatment did not affect the berry firmness, polyphenols, ascorbic acid content, or antioxidant capacities, which were primarily influenced by the storage duration. The monophenolic compounds detected before and after storage indicated that more than one hour of UVC radiation influenced most of the phenolic contents largely before storage. The UVC pretreatment has also influenced some phenolic compounds. After storage, half an hour of UVC pretreatment increased cyanidin levels, and two hours of UVC pretreatment increased catechin and epicatechin levels. However, most of the compounds remained at similar amounts during storage in each treatment. Further research is needed to improve the UVC radiation time length or intensity or explore other technology combinations to optimize UVC pretreatments for blackcurrant storage. Full article
