Monitoring the health of wind turbine foundations is essential for ensuring their operational safety. This paper presents a cost-effective approach to obtain rotational stiffness of wind turbine foundations by using only acceleration and wind speed data that are part of SCADA data, thus lowering the use of moment and tilt sensors that are currently being used for obtaining foundation stiffness. First, a convolutional neural network model is applied to map acceleration and wind speed data within a moving window to corresponding moment and tilt values. Rotational stiffness of the foundation is then estimated by fitting a line in the moment-tilt plane. The results obtained indicate that such a mapping model can provide stiffness values that are within 7% of ground truth stiffness values on average. Second, the developed mapping model is re-trained by using synthetic acceleration and wind speed data that are generated by an autoencoder generative AI network. The results obtained indicate that although the exact amount of stiffness drop cannot be determined, the drops themselves can be detected. This mapping model can be used not only to lower the cost associated with obtaining foundation rotational stiffness but also to sound an alarm when a foundation starts deteriorating. Full article

Control charts (CCs) are one of the most important techniques in statistical process control (SPC) used to monitor the behavior of critical variables. SPC is based on the averages of the samples taken. In this way, not every measurement is observed, and errors in measurements or out-of-control behaviors that are not shown graphically can be hidden. This research proposes a novel segmented control chart (SCC) that considers each measurement of the samples, expressed in matrix form. The vision system technique is used to segment measurements by shading and segmenting into binary values based on the control limits of SPC. Once the matrix is segmented, the seven main features of the matrix are extracted using the translation-, scale-, and rotation-invariant Hu moments of the segmented matrices. Finally, a grouping is made to classify the samples in clear and simple language as excellent, good, or regular using the k-means algorithm. The results visually display the total pattern behavior of the samples and their interpretation when they are classified intelligently. The proposal can be replicated in any production sector and strengthen the control of the sampling process. Full article

This article discusses the transformation of a continuous-time model of the fractional system into a discrete-time model of the fractional system. For the continuous-time model, the exact solution of the nonlinear equation with fractional derivatives (FDs) that has the form of the damped rotator type with power non-locality in time is obtained.This equation with two FDs and periodic kicks is solved in the general case for the arbitrary orders of FDs without any approximations. A three-stage method for solving a nonlinear equation with two FDs and deriving discrete maps with memory (DMMs) is proposed. The exact solutions of the nonlinear equation with two FDs are obtained for arbitrary values of the orders of these derivatives. In this article, the orders of two FDs are not related to each other, unlike in previous works. The exact solution of nonlinear equation with two FDs of different orders and periodic kicks are proposed. Using this exact solution, we derive DMMs that describe a kicked damped rotator with power-law non-localities in time. For the discrete-time model, these damped DMMs are described by the exact solution of nonlinear equations with FDs at discrete time points as the functions of all past discrete moments of time. An example of the application, the exact solution and DMMs are proposed for the economic growth model with two-parameter power-law memory and price kicks. It should be emphasized that the manuscript proposes exact analytical solutions to nonlinear equations with FDs, which are derived without any approximations. Therefore, it does not require any numerical proofs, justifications, or numerical validation. The proposed method gives exact analytical solutions, where approximations are not used at all. This paper investigates a controversial phenomenon: the supposed generation of thrust from a symmetric system consisting of two contra-rotating gyroscopes whose spin axes form equal and opposite polar angles with respect to the axis connecting their supports. An elementary mechanical model demonstrates that, for this configuration of gyroscopes, an internal moment arises within the system. This torque, although internally generated, is well known for playing a significant role in satellite attitude control using control moment gyroscopes (CMGs). The mechanical analysis considers the system of gyroscopes mounted on a platform or cart, which is supported at its front and rear ends. In this context, it was found that the resulting dynamic interaction causes unequal reaction forces at the support points, which do not obey the length-ratio rule predicted by static analysis. Such behavior can lead to misinterpretation of the net external thrust, despite the system being closed and momentum-conserving. In this context, the present paper clearly shows that no net force is allowed to develop. Full article

This study investigates two novel prefabricated frame joints: prestressed steel sleeve-connected prefabricated reinforced concrete joints (PSFRC) and non-prestressed steel sleeve-connected prefabricated reinforced concrete joints (SSFRC). A total of three PSFRC specimens, four SSFRC specimens, and one cast-in-place joint were designed and fabricated. Seismic performance tests were conducted using different end-plate thicknesses, grout strengths, stiffener configurations, and prestressing tendon configurations. The experimental results showed that all specimens experienced beam end failures, and three failure modes occurred: (1) failure of the end plate of the beam sleeve, (2) failure of the variable cross-section of the prefabricated beam, and (3) failure of prefabricated beams at the connection with the steel sleeves. The load-bearing capacity and initial stiffness of the structure are increased by 35.41% and 32.64%, respectively, by increasing the thickness of the end plate. Specimens utilizing C80 grout exhibited a 39.05% higher load capacity than those with lower-grade materials. Adding stiffening ribs improved the initial stiffness substantially. Specimen XF2 had 219.08% higher initial stiffness than XF1, confirming the efficacy of stiffeners in enhancing joint rigidity. The configuration of the prestressed tendons significantly influenced the load-bearing capacity. Specimen YL2 with symmetrical double tendon bundles demonstrated a 27.27% higher ultimate load capacity than specimen YL1 with single centrally placed tendon bundles. An analytical model to calculate the moment–rotation relationship was established following the evaluation criteria specified in Eurocode 3. The results demonstrated a good agreement, providing empirical references for practical engineering applications. Full article

This study investigates the robustness of steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs) under column loss scenarios, both in undamaged and post-seismic conditions. In this context, robustness is defined as the ability of a damaged structure to prevent progressive collapse following an earthquake. A parametric investigation was conducted on 48 three-dimensional MRF configurations, varying key design and geometric parameters such as the number of storeys, span length, and design load combinations. Nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed using realistic ground motions and column loss scenarios defined by UFC guidelines. The effects of pre-existing seismic damage, façade claddings, and joint typologies were explicitly accounted for using validated component-based modelling approaches. The results indicate that long-span, low-rise frames are more vulnerable to collapse initiation due to higher plastic demands, while higher-rise frames benefit from load redistribution through their increased redundancy. In detail, long-span, low-rise frames experience roughly ten times higher displacement demands than their short-span counterparts, and post-seismic damage has limited influence, yielding rotational demands within 5–10% of the undamaged case. The Reserve Displacement Ductility (RDR) ranges from approximately 6.3 for low-rise, long-span frames to 21.5 for high-rise frames, highlighting the significant role of geometry in post-seismic robustness. The post-seismic damage was found to have a limited influence on the dynamic displacement and rotational demands, suggesting that the robustness of steel MRFs after a moderate earthquake is largely comparable to that of the initially undamaged structure. These findings support the development of more accurate design and retrofit provisions for seismic and multi-hazard scenarios. Full article

The paper provides an analysis of the energy efficiency of the swing drive system of hydraulic excavators, which integrally includes a hydraulic motor and a planetary reducer. The indicator of the drive’s energy efficiency is determined based on the efficiency of the hydraulic motor and the planetary reducer. The efficiency of the hydraulic motor is defined as a function of the specific flow, pressure, and the number of revolutions of the hydraulic motor. The efficiency of the reducer is determined using structural analysis of planetary gearboxes and the moment method. As an example, the results of a comparative analysis of the energy efficiency of the swing drive of a tracked hydraulic excavator, weighing 16,000 kg and having a bucket volume of 0.6 m3, are presented. From the set of possible generated variant solutions of the drive, obtained through the synthesis process based on the required torque and platform rotation speed, two extreme drive variants were selected for the analysis. In the first configuration, a hydraulic motor characterized by a low specific flow is combined with a three-stage reduction gear featuring a higher overall transmission ratio, whereas the second configuration integrates a high-specific-flow hydraulic motor with a two-stage reduction gear of a lower transmission ratio. The obtained results of the comparative analysis of the drive’s energy efficiency are presented depending on the change in the required torque and the rotational speed of the platform. Full article

Collar monopile foundation is a new type of offshore wind power foundation. This paper explores the horizontal bearing performance of collar monopile foundation in saturated cohesive soil through a combination of physical experiments and numerical simulations. After analyzing the deformation characteristics of the pile–soil system under horizontal load through static load tests, horizontal cyclic loading tests were conducted at different cycles to study the cumulative deformation law of the collar monopile. Based on a stiffness degradation model for soft clay, a USDFLD subroutine was developed in Fortran and embedded in ABAQUS. Coupled with the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, it was used to simulate the deformation behavior of the collar monopile under horizontal cyclic loading. The numerical model employed the same geometric dimensions and boundary conditions as the physical test, and the simulated cumulative pile–head displacement under 4000 load cycles showed good agreement with the experimental results, thereby verifying the rationality and reliability of the proposed simulation method. Through numerical simulation, the distribution characteristics of bending moment and the shear force of collar monopile foundation were studied, and the influence of pile shaft and collar on the horizontal bearing capacity of collar monopile foundation at different loading stages was analyzed. The results show that as the horizontal load increases, cracks gradually appear at the bottom of the collar and in the surrounding soil. The soil disturbance caused by the sliding and rotation of the collar will gradually increase, leading to plastic failure of the surrounding soil and reducing the bearing capacity. The excess pore water pressure in shallow soil increases rapidly in the early cycle and then gradually decreases with the formation of drainage channels. Deep soil may experience negative pore pressure, indicating the presence of a suction effect. This paper can provide theoretical support for the design optimization and performance evaluation of collar monopile foundations in offshore wind power engineering applications. Full article

Traditional three-row roller YRT turntable bearings exhibit high friction torque during operation, which limits their performance in high-precision and high-response applications. To address this issue, a novel ball–roller composite turntable bearing is proposed that effectively reduces friction torque while maintaining a high load capacity. A mechanical model based on statics is established, and the Newton–Raphson method is employed to calculate the contact load. The formation mechanism of friction torque is analyzed, and a corresponding computational model is developed and validated using experimental data. The effects of axial load, eccentricity, overturning moment, rotational speed, and axial clearance on friction torque are systematically studied. Results indicate that friction torque increases with these parameters. Axial clearance has a significant influence, and an optimal clearance value between the balls and rollers is determined. Additionally, a reasonable range for the raceway curvature radius coefficient is proposed. When the numerical ratio of balls to rollers is 1, the bearing exhibits optimal friction performance. Among various roller crowning strategies, logarithmic crowning yields the best results. This study provides a theoretical basis and technical support for the optimized design of ball–roller composite turntable bearings. Full article

Fluids that exhibit self-rewetting properties, such as aqueous long-chain alcohol solutions, display a unique quadratic relationship between surface tension and temperature and are marked by a positive gradient. This characteristic leads to distinctive patterns of thermocapillary convection and associated interfacial dynamics, setting self-rewetting fluids apart from normal fluids (NFs). The potential to improve heat transfer using self-rewetting fluids (SRFs) is garnering interest for use in various technologies, including low-gravity conditions and microfluidic systems. Our research aims to shed light on the contrasting behaviors of SRFs in comparison to NFs regarding interfacial transport phenomena. This study focuses on the thermocapillary convection in SRF layers with a deformable interface enclosed inside a closed container modeled as a square cavity, which is subject to nonuniform heating, represented using a Gaussian profile for the heat flux variation on one of its sides, in the absence of gravity. To achieve this, we have enhanced a central-moment-based lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) utilizing three distribution functions for tracking interfaces, computing two-fluid motions with temperature-dependent surface tension and energy transport, respectively. Through numerical simulations, the impacts of several characteristic parameters, including the viscosity and thermal conductivity ratios, as well as the surface tension–temperature sensitivity parameters, on the distribution and magnitude of the thermocapillary-driven motion are examined. In contrast to that in NFs, the counter-rotating pair of vortices generated in the SRF layers, due to the surface tension gradient at the interface, is found to be directed toward the SRF layers’ hotter zones. Significant interfacial deformations are observed, especially when there are contrasts in the viscosities of the SRF layers. The thermocapillary convection is found to be enhanced if the bottom SRF layer has a higher thermal conductivity or viscosity than that of the top layer or when distributed, rather than localized, heating is applied. Furthermore, the higher the magnitude of the effect of the dimensionless quadratic surface tension sensitivity coefficient on the temperature, or of the effect of the imposed heat flux, the greater the peak interfacial velocity current generated due to the Marangoni stresses. In addition, an examination of the Nusselt number profiles reveals significant redistribution of the heat transfer rates in the SRF layers due to concomitant nonlinear thermocapillary effects. Preserving heritage sites is a complex challenge that requires multidisciplinary approaches, combining scientific accuracy with cultural and historical sensitivity. In alignment with UNESCO’s conservation guidelines, this study investigated the airflow dynamics and wind-induced structural effects within ancient architecture using advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The study site was the Na Phra Meru Historical Temple in Ayutthaya, Thailand, where the shear stress transport kω turbulence model was applied to analyze distinctive airflow patterns. A high-precision 3D computational domain was developed using Faro focus laser scanning technology, with the CFD results being validated based on onsite experimental data. The findings provided critical insights into the temple’s ventilation behavior, revealing strong correlations between turbulence characteristics, wind speed, temperature, and relative humidity. Notably, the small slit windows generated complex flow mixing, producing a large internal recirculation zone spanning approximately 70% of the central interior space. In addition to airflow distribution, the study evaluated the aerodynamic forces and rotational moments acting on the structure based on five prevailing wind directions. Based on these results, winds from the east and northeast generated the highest aerodynamic loads and rotational stresses, particularly in the lateral and vertical directions. Overall, the findings highlighted the critical role of airflow and wind-induced forces in the deterioration and long-term stability of heritage buildings. The study demonstrated the value of integrating CFD, environmental data, and structural analysis to bridge the gap between conservation science and engineering practice. Future work will explore further the interactions between wall moisture and the multi-layered pigments in mural paintings to inform preservation practices. Full article

This paper evaluates the time-dependent fragility and post-earthquake residual seismic performance of existing steel frame columns in offshore atmospheric environments. Based on experimental research, the seismic failure mechanism and deterioration laws of the seismic behavior of corroded steel frame columns were revealed. A finite element analysis (FEA) method for steel frame columns, which considers corrosion damage and ductile metal damage criteria, is developed and validated. A parametric analysis in terms of service age and design parameters is conducted. Considering the impact of environmental erosion and aging, a classification criterion for damage states for existing steel frame columns is proposed, and the theoretical characterization of each damage state is provided based on the moment-rotation skeleton curves. Based on the test and numerical analysis results, probability distributions of the fragility function parameters (median and logarithmic standard deviation) are constructed. The evolution laws of the fragility parameters with increasing service age under each damage state are determined, and a time-dependent fragility model for existing steel frame columns in offshore atmospheric environments is presented through regression analysis. At a drift ratio of 4%, the probability of complete damage to columns with 40, 50, 60, and 70-year service ages increased by 18.1%, 45.3%, 79.2%, and 124.5%, respectively, compared with columns within a 30-year service age. Based on the developed FEA models and the damage class of existing columns, the influence of characteristic variables (service age, design parameters, and damage level) on the residual seismic capacity of earthquake-damaged columns, namely the seismic resistance that can be maintained even after suffering earthquake damage, is revealed. Using the particle swarm optimization back-propagation neural network (PSO-BPNN) model, nonlinear mapping relationships between the characteristic variables and residual seismic capacity are constructed, thereby proposing a residual seismic performance evaluation model for existing multi-aged steel frame columns in an offshore atmospheric environment. Combined with the damage probability matrix of the time-dependent fragility, the expected values of the residual seismic capacity of existing multi-aged steel frame columns at a given drift ratio are obtained directly in a probabilistic sense. The results of this study lay the foundation for resistance to sequential earthquakes and post-earthquake functional recovery and reconstruction, and provide theoretical support for the full life-cycle seismic resilience assessment of existing steel structures in earthquake-prone areas. Reduced Beam Sections (RBS) are used in steel design to promote ductile behavior by shifting inelastic deformation away from critical joints, enhancing seismic performance through controlled energy dissipation. While current design guidelines assist in detailing RBS connections, moment–rotation curves—essential for understanding energy dissipation—require extensive testing and/or modeling. Machine learning (ML) offers a promising alternative for predicting these curves, yet few studies have explored ML-based approaches, and none, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, have applied Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) to interpret model predictions. This study presents an ML framework using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Gradient Boosting (GB), and Ridge Regression (RR) trained on 500 numerical models to predict the moment–rotation backbone curve of RBS connections under cyclic loading. Among all the models applied, the ANN obtained the highest R2 value of 99.964%, resulting in superior accuracy. Additionally, Shapley values from XAI are employed to evaluate the influence of input parameters on model predictions. The average SHAP values provide important insights into the performance of RBS connections, revealing that cross-sectional characteristics significantly influence moment capacity. In particular, flange thickness (tf), flange width (bf), and the parameter “c” are critical factors, as the flanges contribute the most substantially to resisting bending moments. Full article

We present high-angular resolution observations, conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Band 6, of high-excitation molecular lines of CH3CN, CH3OH, and the H29α radio recombination line, towards the G333.6-0.2 ultracompact (UC) H ii region. Our observations reveal three hot molecular cores: A, B, and C, where emission is detected in ten components of the J=1413 rotational ladder of CH3CN and in the CH3OH J=51,441,3 transition. Rotational diagram analysis of CH3CN reveals excitation temperatures ranging from 380 to 430 K. First-order moment maps of CH3CN and CH3OH reveal distinct velocity gradients in all cores, suggesting rotating structures, with core A also showing evidence of expansion motions. The H29α recombination line shows a linewidth of 30.2±0.12 km s−1, dominated by dynamical and thermal broadening, indicative of large-scale motions in ionized gas. Analysis of the ionized gas properties yields an electron density of (4.8±0.4)×105 cm−3, an emission measure of (1.23±0.06)×109 pc cm−6, and a Lyman continuum photon flux consistent with an O5–O6 V (Zero-Age Main Sequence; ZAMS) star. Our results suggest that G333.6-0.2 is in an intermediate evolutionary stage between hypercompact (HC) and ultracompact (UC) H ii regions, hosting active high-mass star formation with rotating hot cores and ionized gas dynamics. Gyro-System for Guidance with Magnetically Suspended Gyroscope, Using Control Laws Based on Dynamic Inversion

The authors have designed a gyro-system for orientation (guidance) and stabilization, with two gimbals and a rotor in magnetic suspension (AMB—Active Magnetic Bearing) usable for self-guided rockets. The gyro-system (DGMSGG—double gimbal magnetic suspension gyro-system for guidance) orients and stabilizes the target coordinator’s axis (CT) and, at the same time, the AMB–rotor’s axis so that they overlap the guidance line (the target line). DGMSGG consists of two decoupled systems: one for canceling the AMB–rotor translations along the precession axes (induced by external disturbing forces), the other for canceling the AMB–rotor rotations relative to the CT-axis (induced by external disturbing moments) and, at the same time, for controlling the gimbals’ rotations, so that the AMB–rotor’s axis overlaps the guidance line. The nonlinear DGMSGG model is decomposed into two sub-models: one for the AMB–rotor’s translation, the other for the AMB–rotor’s and gimbals’ rotation. The second sub-model is described first by nonlinear state equations. This model is reduced to a second order nonlinear matrix—vector form with respect to the output vector. The output vector consists of the rotation angles of the AMB–rotor and the rotation angles of the gimbals. For this purpose, a differential geometry method, based on the use of the output vector’s gradient with respect to the nonlinear state functions, i.e., based on Lie derivatives, is used. This equation highlights the relative degree (equal to 2) with respect to the variables of the output vector and allows for the use of the dynamic inversion method in the design of stabilization and guidance controllers (of P.I.D.- and PD-types), as well as in the design of the related linear state observers. The controller of the subsystem intended for AMB–rotor’s translations control is chosen as P.I.D.-type, which leads to the cancellation of both its translations and its translation speeds. The theoretical results are validated through numerical simulations, using Simulink/Matlab models. Full article
