The strategic allocation of advertising billboards has become a critical aspect of urban planning and resource management. While previous studies have explored site selection based on road network and population data, they have often overlooked the diminishing marginal returns of overlapping coverage and neglected to efficiently process large-scale urban datasets. To address these challenges, this study proposes two complementary optimization methods: an enhanced greedy algorithm based on geometric modeling and spatial acceleration techniques, and a reinforcement learning approach using Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). The enhanced greedy algorithm incorporates population-weighted road coverage modeling, employs a geometric series to capture diminishing returns from overlapping coverage, and integrates spatial indexing and parallel computing to significantly improve scalability and solution quality in large urban networks. Meanwhile, the PPO-based method models billboard site selection as a sequential decision-making process in a dynamic environment, where agents adaptively learn optimal deployment strategies through reward signals, balancing coverage gains and redundancy penalties and effectively handling complex multi-step optimization tasks. Experiments conducted on Wuhan’s road network demonstrate that both methods effectively optimize population-weighted billboard coverage under budget constraints while enhancing spatial distribution balance. Quantitatively, the enhanced greedy algorithm improves coverage effectiveness by 18.6% compared to the baseline, while the PPO-based method further improves it by 4.3% with enhanced spatial equity. The proposed framework provides a robust and scalable decision-support tool for urban advertising infrastructure planning and resource allocation. Full article

Urban health planning requires a multi-scalar understanding of the territory, capable of capturing socio-economic inequalities and health needs at the local level. In the case of Rome, current administrative subdivisions—Urban Zones (Zone Urbanistiche)—are too large and internally heterogeneous to serve as effective units for equitable health planning. This study presents a methodology for the territorial redefinition of Rome’s Municipality III, aimed at supporting healthcare planning through an integrated analysis of census sections. These were grouped using a combination of census-based socio-demographic indicators (educational attainment, employment status, single-person households) and real estate values (OMI data), alongside administrative and road network data. The resulting territorial units—21 newly defined Mesoareas—are smaller than Urban Zones but larger than individual census sections and correspond to socio-territorially homogeneous neighborhoods; this structure enables a more nuanced spatial understanding of health-related inequalities. The proposed model is replicable, adaptable to other urban contexts, and offers a solid analytical basis for more equitable and targeted health planning, as well as for broader urban policy interventions aimed at promoting spatial justice. This study evaluates the competitiveness and sustainable development prospects of French-speaking African countries by constructing a comprehensive framework integrating the TOPSIS method and adaptive LASSO algorithm. Using multivariate data from sources such as the World Bank, 30 indicators covering core, basic, and auxiliary competitiveness were selected to quantitatively analyze the competitiveness of 26 French-speaking African countries. Results show that their comprehensive competitiveness exhibits spatial patterns of “high in the north and south, low in the east and west” and “high in coastal areas, low in inland areas”. Algeria, Morocco, and six other countries demonstrate high competitiveness, while Central African countries generally show low competitiveness. The adaptive LASSO algorithm identifies three key influencing factors, including the proportion of R&D expenditure to GDP, high-tech exports, and total reserves, as well as five secondary key factors, including the number of patent applications and total number of domestic listed companies, revealing that scientific and technological investment, financial strength, and innovation transformation capabilities are core constraints. Based on these findings, sustainable development strategies are proposed, such as strengthening scientific and technological research and development and innovation transformation, optimizing financial reserves and capital markets, and promoting China–Africa collaborative cooperation, providing decision-making references for competitiveness improvement and regional cooperation of French-speaking African countries under the background of the “Belt and Road Initiative”. Urban areas are at the forefront in addressing global challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. Among the key responses are nature-based solutions, which are increasingly being integrated into policy frameworks but which require strong community engagement for their effective implementation. This paper presents the findings of surveys conducted within the Place Lab in Katowice, Poland, an initiative developed as part of an international project and used as a participatory tool for co-creating and implementing green infrastructure. The project applies both place-based and people-centred approaches to support European cities in their transition towards regenerative urbanism. Place Lab activities encourage collaboration between local authorities and residents, enhancing awareness and fostering participation in environmental initiatives. The survey data collected during the project allowed for the evaluation of changes in public attitudes and levels of engagement and for the identification of broader societal phenomena that may influence the implementation of nature-based solutions. The findings revealed, for instance, that more women were interested in supporting the project, that residents tended to be sceptical of governmental actions on climate change, and that views were divided on the trade-off between urban infrastructure such as parking and roads and the presence of green areas. Furthermore, questions of responsibility, awareness, and long-term commitment were frequently raised. Building on the survey results and the existing literature, the study proposes a set of indicators to assess the contribution of citizen participation to the adoption of nature-based solutions. While the effectiveness of nature-based solutions in mitigating climate change impacts can be assessed relatively directly, evaluating civic engagement is more complex. Nevertheless, when conducted transparently and interpreted by experts, indicator-based assessment can offer valuable insights. This study introduces a novel perspective by considering not only drivers of engagement but also the obstacles. The proposed indicators provide a foundation for evaluating community readiness and commitment to nature-based approaches and may be adapted for application in other urban settings and in future research on climate resilience strategies. The design and optimization of drive distribution strategies are critical for enhancing the performance of Formula Student electric racing cars, which face demanding operational conditions such as rapid acceleration, tight cornering, and variable track surfaces. Given the increasing complexity of racing environments and the need for adaptive control solutions, a multi-mode adaptive drive distribution strategy for four-wheel-drive Formula Student electric racing cars is proposed in this study to meet specialized operational demands. Based on the dynamic characteristics of standardized test scenarios (e.g., straight-line acceleration and figure-eight loop), two control modes are designed: slip-ratio-based anti-slip control for longitudinal dynamics and direct yaw moment control for lateral stability. A CarSim–Simulink co-simulation platform is established, with test scenarios conforming to competition standards, including variable road adhesion coefficients (μ is 0.3–0.9) and composite curves. Simulation results indicate that, compared to conventional PID control, the proposed strategy reduces the peak slip ratio to the optimal range of 18% during acceleration and enhances lateral stability in the figure-eight loop, maintaining the sideslip angle around −0.3°. These findings demonstrate the potential for significant improvements in both performance and safety, offering a scalable framework for future developments in racing vehicle control systems. To overcome the limitations of traditional image alignment methods in capturing deep semantic features, a deep feature information image alignment network (DFA-Net) is proposed. This network aims to enhance image alignment performance through multi-level feature learning. DFA-Net is based on the deep residual architecture and introduces spatial pyramid pooling to achieve cross-scalar feature fusion, effectively enhancing the feature’s adaptability to scale. A feature enhancement module based on the self-attention mechanism is designed, with key features that exhibit geometric invariance and high discriminative power, achieved through a dynamic weight allocation strategy. This improves the network’s robustness to multimodal image deformation. Experiments on two public datasets, MSRS and RoadScene, show that the method performs well in terms of alignment accuracy, with the RMSE metrics being reduced by 0.661 and 0.473, and the SSIM, MI, and NCC improved by 0.155, 0.163, and 0.211; and 0.108, 0.226, and 0.114, respectively, compared with the benchmark model. The visualization results validate the significant improvement in the features’ visual quality and confirm the method’s advantages in terms of stability and discriminative properties of deep feature extraction. Modern traffic management requires sophisticated approaches to address the complexities of urban road networks, which continue to grow in complexity due to increasing urbanization and vehicle usage. Traditional methods often fall short in mitigating congestion and optimizing traffic flow, inducing the exploration of innovative traffic control strategies based on advanced theoretical frameworks. In this sense, we explore different game theory-based control strategies in an eight-intersection traffic network modeled by means of hybrid systems and graph theory, using a software simulator that combines the multi-modal traffic simulation software VISSIM and MATLAB to integrate traffic network parameters and population game criteria. Across five distinct network scenarios with varying saturation conditions, we explore a fixed-time scheme of signaling by means of fictitious play dynamics and adaptive schemes, using dynamics such as Smith, replicator, Logit and Brown–Von Neumann–Nash (BNN). Results show better performance for Smith and replicator dynamics in terms of traffic parameters both for fixed and variable signaling times, with an interesting outcome of fictitious play over BNN and Logit. Emergency material scheduling (EMS) is a core component of post-disaster emergency response, with its efficiency directly impacting rescue effectiveness and the satisfaction of affected populations. However, due to severe road damage, limited availability of resources, and logistical challenges after disasters, current EMS practices often suffer from uneven resource distribution. To address these issues, this paper proposes a priority-based, multi-stage EMS approach with drone coordination. First, we construct a three-level EMS network “storage warehouses–transit centers–disaster areas” by integrating the advantages of large-scale transportation via trains and the flexible delivery capabilities of drones. Second, considering multiple constraints, such as the priority level of disaster areas, drone flight range, transport capacity, and inventory capacities at each node, we formulate a bilevel mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. Third, given the NP-hard nature of the problem, we design a hybrid algorithm—the Tabu Genetic Algorithm combined with Branch and Bound (TGA-BB), which integrates the global search capability of genetic algorithms, the precise solution mechanism of branch and bound, and the local search avoidance features of Tabu search. A stage-adjustment operator is also introduced to better adapt the algorithm to multi-stage scheduling requirements. Finally, we designed eight instances of varying scales to systematically evaluate the performance of the stage-adjustment operator and the Tabu search mechanism within TGA-BB. Comparative experiments were conducted against several traditional heuristic algorithms. The experimental results show that TGA-BB outperformed the other algorithms across all eight test cases, in terms of both average response time and average runtime. Specifically, in Instance 7, TGA-BB reduced the average response time by approximately 52.37% compared to TGA-Particle Swarm Optimization (TGA-PSO), and in Instance 2, it shortened the average runtime by about 97.95% compared to TGA-Simulated Annealing (TGA-SA).These results fully validate the superior solution accuracy and computational efficiency of TGA-BB in drone-coordinated, multi-stage EMS. Xylosalsola chiwensis (Popov) Akhani & Roalson is listed in the Red Data Book of Kazakhstan as a rare species with a limited distribution, occurring in small populations in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of the ecological conditions of its habitats, the floristic composition of its associated plant communities, the species’ morphological and anatomical characteristics, and its molecular phylogeny, as well as to identify the main threats to its survival. The ecological conditions of the X. chiwensis habitats include coastal sandy plains and the slopes of chinks and denudation plains with gray–brown desert soils and bozyngens on the Mangyshlak Peninsula and the Ustyurt Plateau at altitudes ranging from −3 to 270 m above sea level. The species is capable of surviving in arid conditions (less than 100 mm of annual precipitation) and under extreme temperatures (air temperatures exceeding 45 °C and soil surface temperatures above 65 °C). In X. chiwensis communities, we recorded 53 species of vascular plants. Anthropogenic factors associated with livestock grazing, industrial disturbances, and off-road vehicle traffic along an unregulated network of dirt roads have been identified as contributing to population decline and the potential extinction of the species under conditions of unsustainable land use. The morphometric traits of X. chiwensis could be used for taxonomic analysis and for identifying diagnostic morphological characteristics to distinguish between species of Xylosalsola. The most taxonomically valuable characteristics include the fruit diameter (with wings) and the cone-shaped structure length, as they differ consistently between species and exhibit relatively low variability. Anatomical adaptations to arid conditions were observed, including a well-developed hypodermis, which is indicative of a water-conserving strategy. The moderate photosynthetic activity, reflected by a thinner palisade mesophyll layer, may be associated with reduced photosynthetic intensity, which is compensated for through structural mechanisms for water conservation. The flow cytometry analysis revealed a genome size of 2.483 ± 0.191 pg (2n/4x = 18), and the phylogenetic analysis confirmed the placement of X. chiwensis within the tribe Salsoleae of the subfamily Salsoloideae, supporting its taxonomic distinctness. To support the conservation of this rare species, measures are proposed to expand the area of the Ustyurt Nature Reserve through the establishment of cluster sites. Full article

Traditional stabilization techniques, such as lime and cement, widely used for their effectiveness, albeit with economic and environmental limitations, are leading to the search for sustainable approaches that utilize agricultural and industrial waste, such as rice husk ash, bagasse, and natural fibers. These have been shown to improve key geotechnical properties, even under saturated conditions, significantly. In particular, the combination of rice husk ash and recycled ceramics has shown notable results in Ecuadorian coastal soils. The article emphasizes the importance of selecting techniques that balance effectiveness, cost, and sustainability and identifies existing limitations, such as the lack of long-term data (ten years) and predictive models adapted to the Ecuadorian climate. From a bibliographic perspective, this article analyzes the challenges posed by expansive soils in the western coastal region of Ecuador, whose high plasticity and instability to moisture negatively affect civil works such as roads and buildings. The Ecuadorian clay contained 30% kaolinite and only 1.73% CaO, limiting its chemical reactivity compared to soils such as Saudi Arabia, which contained 34.7% montmorillonite and 9.31% CaO. Natural fibers such as jute, with 85% cellulose, improved the soil’s mechanical strength, increasing the UCS by up to 130%. Rice husk ash (97.69% SiO2) and sugarcane bagasse improved the CBR by 90%, highlighting their potential as sustainable stabilizers. All of this is contextualized within Ecuador’s geoenvironmental conditions, which are influenced by climatic phenomena such as El Niño and La Niña, as well as global warming. Finally, it is proposed to promote multidisciplinary research that fosters more efficient and environmentally responsible solutions for stabilizing expansive soils. Full article

This paper proposes a speed-adaptive autonomous driving path-tracking framework based on the soft actor–critic (SAC) and pure pursuit (PP) methods, named the SACPP controller. The framework first analyzes the obstacles around the vehicle and plans an obstacle-free reference path with the minimum curvature using the hybrid A* algorithm. Next, based on the generated reference path, the current state of the vehicle, and the vehicle motor energy efficiency diagram, the optimal speed is calculated in real time, and the vehicle dynamics preview point at the future moment—specifically, the look-ahead distance—is predicted. This process relies on the learning of the SAC network structure. Finally, PP is used to generate the front wheel angle control value by combining the current speed and the predicted preview point. In the second layer, we carefully designed the evaluation function in the tracking process based on the uncertainties and performance requirements that may occur during vehicle driving. This design ensures that the autonomous vehicle can not only quickly and accurately track the path, but also effectively avoid surrounding obstacles, while keeping the motor running in the high-efficiency range, thereby reducing energy loss. In addition, since the entire framework uses a lightweight network structure and a geometry-based method to generate the front wheel angle, the computational load is significantly reduced, and computing resources are saved. The actual running results on the i7 CPU show that the control cycle of the control framework exceeds 100 Hz. Full article

The efficient recognition of unpaved roads from remote sensing (RS) images holds significant value for tasks such as emergency response and route planning in outdoor environments. However, unpaved roads often face challenges such as blurred boundaries, low contrast, complex shapes, and a lack of publicly available datasets. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel architecture, Swin-FSNet, which combines frequency analysis and spatial enhancement techniques to optimize feature extraction. The architecture consists of two core modules: the Wavelet-Based Feature Decomposer (WBFD) module and the Hybrid Dynamic Snake Block (HyDS-B) module. The WBFD module enhances boundary detection by capturing directional gradient changes at the road edges and extracting high-frequency features, effectively addressing boundary blurring and low contrast. The HyDS-B module, by adaptively adjusting the receptive field, performs spatial modeling for complex-shaped roads, significantly improving adaptability to narrow road curvatures. In this study, the southern mountainous area of Shihezi, Xinjiang, was selected as the study area, and the unpaved road dataset was constructed using high-resolution UAV images. Experimental results on the SHZ unpaved road dataset and the widely used DeepGlobe dataset show that Swin-FSNet performs well in segmentation accuracy and road structure preservation, with an IoUroad of 81.76% and 71.97%, respectively. The experiments validate the excellent performance and robustness of Swin-FSNet in extracting unpaved roads from high-resolution RS images. Full article

The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) presents a vast opportunity for optimised traffic flow, road safety, and enhanced usage experience with the influence of Federated Learning (FL). However, the distributed nature of IoV networks creates certain inherent problems regarding data privacy, security from adversarial attacks, and the handling of available resources. This paper introduces Fed-DTB, a new dynamic trust-based framework for FL that aims to overcome these challenges in the context of IoV. Fed-DTB integrates the adaptive trust evaluation that is capable of quickly identifying and excluding malicious clients to maintain the authenticity of the learning process. A performance comparison with previous approaches is shown, where the Fed-DTB method improves accuracy in the first two training rounds and decreases the per-round training time. The Fed-DTB is robust to non-IID data distributions and outperforms all other state-of-the-art approaches regarding the final accuracy (87–88%), convergence rate, and adversary detection (99.86% accuracy). The key contributions include (1) a multi-factor trust evaluation mechanism with seven contextual factors, (2) correlation-based adaptive weighting that dynamically prioritises trust factors based on vehicular conditions, and (3) an optimisation-based client selection strategy that maximises collaborative reliability. This work opens up opportunities for more accurate, secure, and private collaborative learning in future intelligent transportation systems with the help of federated learning while overcoming the conventional trade-off of security vs. efficiency. Enriching Urban Life with AI and Uncovering Creative Solutions: Enhancing Livability in Saudi Cities

This paper examines how artificial intelligence (AI) can be strategically deployed to enhance urban planning and environmental livability in Riyadh by generating data-driven, people-centric design interventions. Unlike previous studies that concentrate primarily on visualization, this research proposes an integrative appraisal framework that combines AI-generated design with site-specific environmental data and native vegetation typologies. This study was conducted across key jurisdictional areas including the Northern Ring Road, King Abdullah Road, Al Rabwa, Al-Malaz, Al-Suwaidi, Al-Batha, and King Fahd Road. Using AI tools, urban scenarios were developed to incorporate expanded pedestrian pathways (up to 3.5 m), dedicated bicycle lanes (up to 3.0 m), and ecologically adaptive green buffer zones featuring native drought-resistant species such as Date Palm, Acacia, and Sidr. The quantitative analysis of post-intervention outcomes revealed surface temperature reductions of 3.2–4.5 °C and significant improvements in urban esthetics, walkability, and perceived safety—measured on a five-point Likert scale with 80–100% increases in user satisfaction. Species selection was validated for ecological adaptability, minimal maintenance needs, and compatibility with Riyadh’s sandy soils. This study directly supports the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 by demonstrating how emerging technologies like AI can drive smart, sustainable urban transformation. It aligns with Vision 2030’s urban development goals under the Quality-of-Life Program and environmental sustainability pillar, promoting healthier, more connected cities with elevated livability standards. The research not only delivers practical design recommendations for planners seeking to embed sustainability and digital innovation in Saudi urbanism but also addresses real-world constraints such as budgetary limitations and infrastructure integration. Understanding automated vehicle (AV) behavior in complex road environments and user attitudes in such contexts is critical for their safe and effective integration into smart cities. Despite growing deployment, limited public data exist on AV performance in construction zones; highly dynamic settings marked by irregular lane markings, shifting detours, and unpredictable human presence. This study investigates AV behavior in these conditions through qualitative, video-based analysis of user-documented experiences on YouTube, focusing on Tesla’s supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Waymo systems. Spoken narration, captions, and subtitles were examined to evaluate AV perception, decision-making, control, and interaction with humans. Findings reveal that while AVs excel in structured tasks such as obstacle detection, lane tracking, and cautious speed control, they face challenges in interpreting temporary infrastructure, responding to unpredictable human actions, and navigating low-visibility environments. These limitations not only impact performance but also influence user trust and acceptance. The study underscores the need for continued technological refinement, improved infrastructure design, and user-informed deployment strategies. By addressing current shortcomings, this research offers critical insights into AV readiness for real-world conditions and contributes to safer, more adaptive urban mobility systems. Full article
