Parental Cigarette Smoke Exposure and Its Impact on Offspring Reproductive Health: A Systematic Review of Maternal, Paternal, and Dual-Smoking Effects

Objectives: Parental exposure to tobacco smoke is a significant public health concern, with over 1.1 billion smokers worldwide. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the impact of maternal, paternal, and dual-parental cigarette smoke exposure on offspring reproductive health. Methods: Original human clinical and animal research studies were included; titles and abstracts were manually scanned for relevance to the effect of parental smoking on offspring reproductive outcomes (Date of search:18/03/2025). Results: This systematic review incorporates 30 studies identified from three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus). The results indicate that male offspring exhibit reduced spermatogenic capacity, characterized by decreased testicular size, lower sperm count, and impaired hormonal biosynthesis, with reductions of 30–40% in sperm production. Dual-parental smoking exacerbates these effects, with sperm counts averaging 85 million per ml in human male offspring from dual-smoking households, compared to 111 million per ml in single-smoking households. Animal studies provide mechanistic insights, revealing reduced testis weight in nicotine-exposed male rats and increased oxidative stress in offspring. Conclusions: This review highlights the dose-dependent and sex-specific effects of smoking on the fertility of offspring and underscores the need for standardized protocols to enhance the consistency and comparability of future research in both human and animal studies. In December 2023, infections of western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) within Argentina were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). By April 2024, more than 250 human infections, 12 of which were fatal, and 2500 equine infections were identified in South America. Laboratory diagnosis and surveillance in affected countries were hindered by a lack of facilities equipped with BSL-3 laboratories, as confirmatory serodiagnosis for WEEV requires live virus in the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT). To expand serodiagnosis for WEEV in the Americas, we developed a virus chimera composed of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) engineered to display the E2-E1 glycoproteins of WEEV (VSV/WEEV) in place of the VSV glycoprotein (G). PRNT90 and IC90 values of parental WEEV and VSV/WEEV were analogous using sera collected from mice, horses, and chickens. VSV/WEEV rapidly formed plaques with clear borders and reduced the assay readout time by approximately 8 h compared to the parental virus. Overall, we demonstrate that chimeric VSV/WEEV is a suitable surrogate for WEEV in a diagnostic PRNT. Use of chimeric VSV/WEEV in place of authentic WEEV will dramatically expand testing capacity by enabling PRNTs to be performed at BSL-2 containment, while simultaneously decreasing the health risk to testing personnel. Introduction: Nurses are the largest group of healthcare workers, and healthcare managers should pay attention to the quality of work life and the health and working capacity of nurses in order to ensure a sufficient number of nurses and a stable workforce. Aim: The present study aimed to determine nurses’ quality of work life, work ability index and intention to leave the nursing profession and to examine the associations between nurses’ quality of work life, work ability index and intention to leave the nursing profession. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 498 nurses completed the instrument, consisting of demographic data, Brooks’ Quality of Nursing Work Life Survey (BQNWL), Work Ability Index Questionnaire (WAIQ) and questions on their intention to leave their current job or the nursing profession. Results: Most nurses had a moderate quality of work life (QWL) (73.7%) and a good work ability index (WAI) (43.78%). Men (p = 0.047), nurses who study (p = 0.021), nurses who do not have children (p = 0.000) and nurses who do not take care of their parents (p = 0.000) have a statistically significantly higher total WAIQ score. Most nurses (61.1%) had considered changing jobs in the last 12 months, and 36.9% had considered leaving the nursing profession. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the total BQNWL and the total WAI. The study found no correlation between QWL, WAI and intention to change jobs or leave the profession, which was unexpected. Conclusions: To ensure the provision of necessary nursing care and a healthy working environment for nurses, it is necessary to regularly monitor QWL and WAI and take measures to ensure the highest quality of working life. Further longitudinal and mixed-methods research is needed to understand the relationship between QWL, WAI and intention to leave. Full article

Cultivated land quality is a key factor in ensuring sustainable agricultural development. Exploring differences in cultivated land quality under distinct cropping systems is essential for developing targeted improvement strategies. This study takes place in Shenyang City—located in the typical black soil region of Northeast China—as a case area to construct a cultivated land quality evaluation system comprising 13 indicators, including organic matter, effective soil layer thickness, and texture configuration. A minimum data set (MDS) was separately extracted for paddy and upland fields using principal component analysis (PCA) to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of cultivated land quality. Additionally, an obstacle degree model was employed to identify the limiting factors and quantify their impact. The results indicated the following. (1) Both MDSs consisted of seven indicators, among which five were common: ≥10 °C accumulated temperature, available phosphorus, arable layer thickness, irrigation capacity, and organic matter. Parent material and effective soil layer thickness were unique to paddy fields, while landform type and soil texture were unique to upland fields. (2) The cultivated land quality index (CQI) values at the sampling point level showed no significant difference between paddy (0.603) and upland (0.608) fields. However, their spatial distributions diverged significantly; paddy fields were dominated by high-grade land (Grades I and II) clustered in southern areas, whereas uplands were primarily of medium quality (Grades III and IV), with broader spatial coverage. (3) Major constraint factors for paddy fields were effective soil layer thickness (21.07%) and arable layer thickness (22.29%). For upland fields, the dominant constraints were arable layer thickness (27.57%), organic matter (25.40%), and ≥10 °C accumulated temperature (23.28%). Available phosphorus and ≥10 °C accumulated temperature were identified as shared constraint factors affecting quality classification in both systems. In summary, cultivated land quality under different cropping systems is influenced by distinct limiting factors. The construction of cropping-system-specific MDSs effectively improves the efficiency and accuracy of cultivated land quality assessment, offering theoretical and methodological support for land resource management in the black soil regions of China. Background: Motor performance in childhood predicts physical fitness, cognitive capacity, socio-emotional development, and academic success. Parenting styles are especially important to such performance in the preschool period, as children’s gross motor abilities are shaped in part by their interactions with parents. Young children’s physical activity is also declining as they spend more time on screens. Methods: This quantitative survey-based study examined the relationships among 252 preschoolers’ gross motor skills, their tendency to become addicted to digital games, and their parents’ parenting styles. Results: The sampled preschoolers’ gross motor skill development and game addiction tendencies were both low, while the participating parents reported high levels of democratic and overprotective parenting attitudes, low levels of authoritarian ones, and moderate levels of permissive ones. Motor skills were not associated with children’s addiction tendency or parents’ democratic (also known as authoritative), authoritarian, or permissive styles. However, overprotective parenting was positively and significantly associated with gross motor skill scores. While no significant relationship was found between children’s digital game addiction tendencies and their parents’ adoption of a democratic parenting style, such tendencies were positively and statistically correlated with the authoritarian and permissive parenting styles. One dimension of such tendencies, constant gameplay, was also positively and significantly correlated with overprotective parenting. Conclusions: Although the participating children’s digital game addiction tendencies were low, the findings indicate that parents and carers should guide children to reduce their screen time and promote increased interaction with their surroundings and other people to mitigate screen time’s known negative effects on gross motor coordination. Many patients with psychosis have dependent children. Being a parent is an important and valued role for people with psychosis. However, the experience of psychosis can disrupt parent–child interactions, which can negatively affect both parents and children. Despite this understanding, there remains a lack of diagnosis-specific parenting interventions for parents with lived experience of psychosis. An eight-week digital mentalization-based parenting group intervention (Me, My Child, and Us) was piloted to evaluate its acceptability, feasibility, and impact on self-reported parenting satisfaction, parental relationship, and overall wellbeing. The study used a within-participant non-controlled pre–post design using mixed quantitative and qualitative methodology. Thirteen parents with dependent children were recruited and two eight-week groups were run. Eleven parents completed the intervention, the pre- and post-group measures, and provided qualitative feedback on their experience of the intervention. On average, parents attended 75% of sessions. Parents reported high satisfaction with the content and structure of the group. Scores on pre- and post- group measures suggest improvements in self-reported parental wellbeing, parental relationship, parenting stress levels, parenting satisfaction and efficacy, as well as mentalizing capacity. The Me, My Child, and Us parenting group is feasible to deliver and acceptable for parents with lived experience of psychosis. The preliminary self-report data indicate a controlled evaluation of the intervention as the next step. Full article

A university’s reputation is a key indicator of the quality of its education, the competitiveness of its alumni, its institutional influence in society, and its degree of global recognition, including its ranking and rating among higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world. This not only enhances institutional standing and secures positions in international rankings but also promotes sustainable education practices. In addition, students, their parents, and their partners select universities due to their trust in the reliability of a university’s public reputation and ranking. This study proposes a model to assess a university’s reputation based on specific factors. In this research, the dependent variable is university reputation, the mediating variable is university social responsibility, and the independent variables include the teacher reputation, alumni reputation, research and innovation, and cooperation. A survey of 5902 respondents—including alumni, employers, and parents—offers diverse perspectives on university reputation. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling tools (Smart PLS 4.1 and SPSS 25.0). The findings confirm that social responsibility has a strong and positive influence on university reputation. Furthermore, faculty and alumni reputation, research and innovation, and external collaboration directly enhance universities’ social responsibility. This suggests that social responsibility serves as a key mediating variable in the relationship between institutional capacity and reputation. This study represents the first empirical assessment of university reputation in Mongolia, addressing a notable gap in the literature. By incorporating context-specific insights and stakeholder perspectives, the research offers both theoretical contributions and practical implications. The results provide a foundation for developing regionally responsive strategies to improve the quality of higher education and advance sustainable development goals. Full article

Regional anesthesia techniques such as the ultrasound-guided PECS II (pectoral nerve block) block are increasingly employed to optimize perioperative analgesia while minimizing systemic anesthetic exposure. Ropivacaine is commonly used for its favorable pharmacological profile; however, clinical data on its pharmacokinetics and systemic metabolite behavior following interpectoral administration remain limited. This study aimed to characterize the plasma concentration–time profile of ropivacaine and its main active metabolite, 3-OH-ropivacaine, in patients undergoing interpectoral nerve block, using a validated LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) method. Venous blood samples were collected from 18 patients at predefined time points (0, 1, 3, 6, and 24 h) following a PECS II block performed with a ropivacaine-lidocaine mixture. Plasma concentrations were quantified via a validated LC-MS/MS protocol in accordance with FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and EMA (European Medicines Agency) guidelines. Pharmacokinetic parameters were derived using non-compartmental analysis. Ropivacaine reached a mean peak plasma concentration (Cmax—maximum concentration) of 167.5 ± 28.3 ng/mL at 1.3 ± 0.2 h (Tmax—maximum time). The metabolite 3-OH-ropivacaine peaked at 124.1 ± 21.4 ng/mL at 2.3 ± 0.3 h. The terminal elimination half-life was 19.4 ± 2.8 h for ropivacaine and 29.2 ± 3.1 h for its metabolite. Plasma levels demonstrated prolonged systemic exposure with predictable pharmacokinetics. The PECS II block using ropivacaine results in sustained systemic levels of both the parent drug and its primary metabolite, supporting its role in prolonged perioperative analgesia. These data provide a pharmacokinetic foundation for personalized regional anesthesia protocols. This strategy facilitates the adaptation of anesthetic protocols to the individual characteristics of each patient, aligning with the principles of personalized medicine, particularly in patients with altered metabolic capacity. With the natural evolution of the Arctic route and advancements in related technologies, the development of new green ice-class ships is becoming a key technological breakthrough for the global shipbuilding industry. As a special vessel form that must perform icebreaking operations and undertake long-distance ocean voyages, an ice-class ship requires sufficient icebreaking capacity to navigate ice-covered water areas. However, since such ships operate for most of their time under open water conditions, it is also crucial to consider their resistance characteristics in these environments. Firstly, this paper employs linear interpolation to extract wind, wave, and sea ice data along the route and calculates the proportion of ice-covered and open water area in the overall voyage. This provides data support for hull form optimization based on real sea state conditions. Then, a resistance optimization platform for ice-class ships is established by integrating hull surface mixed deformation control within a scenario analysis framework. Based on the optimization results, comparative analysis is conducted between the parent hull and the optimized hull under various environmental resistance scenarios. Finally, the optimization results are evaluated in terms of energy consumption using a fuel consumption model of the ship’s main engine. The optimized hull achieves a 16.921% reduction in total resistance, with calm water resistance and wave-added resistance reduced by 5.92% and 27.6%, respectively. Additionally, the optimized hull shows significant resistance reductions under multiple wave and floating ice conditions. At the design speed, calm water power and hourly fuel consumption are reduced by 7.1% and 7.02%, respectively. The experimental results show that the hull form optimization process in this paper can take into account both ice-region navigation and ice-free navigation. The design ideas and solution methods can provide a reference for the design of ice-class ships. Full article

Although professionals who work with children and adolescents are well aware of psychological symptom presentations once children and adolescents are in school, such symptom presentations in very young children are less understood. Diagnoses like selective mutism may promote further complications for professionals, as the symptom presentation of anxiety and failure to speak in this diagnosis may overlap with the acquisition of speech and language milestones and problems in very young children. Thus, providing professionals who work with very young children a way to adapt their thinking about selective mutism symptom presentations and interventions is of utmost importance. As a result, this clinically oriented paper will compare DSM-5-TR criteria to DC:0-5 criteria, consider the occurrence of selective mutism symptoms in the context of young children’s speech and language milestones and problems, and reflect upon how intervention adaptations meant to incorporate parents into treatment and account for the capacities of very young children can be helpful in facilitating successful outcomes. It is hoped that having this constellation of clinical information in one place will help providers gain clarity regarding selective mutism symptom presentation and relevant intervention considerations for very young children. Digital Transitions and Sustainable Futures: Family Structure’s Impact on Chinese Consumer Saving Choices and Marketing Implications

Family structure has long been regarded as an important determinant of household saving, yet the empirical evidence for developing economies remains limited. Using the 2018–2022 panels of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), a nationwide survey that follows 16,519 households across three waves, the present study investigates how family size, the elderly share, and the child share jointly shape saving behavior. A household fixed effects framework is employed to control for time-invariant heterogeneity, followed by a sequential endogeneity strategy: external-shock instruments are tested and rejected, lagged two-stage least squares implement internal instruments, and a dynamic System-GMM model is estimated to capture saving persistence. Robustness checks include province-by-year fixed effects, inverse probability weighting for attrition, balanced-panel replication, alternative variable definitions, lag structures, and sample filters. Family size raises the saving rate by 4.6 percentage points in the preferred dynamic specification (p < 0.01). The elderly ratio remains insignificant throughout, whereas the child ratio exerts a negative but model-sensitive association. A three-path mediation analysis indicates that approximately 26 percent of the total family size effect operates through scale economy savings on quasi-fixed expenses, 19 percent is offset by resource dilution pressure, and less than 1 percent flows through a precautionary saving channel linked to income volatility. These findings extend the resource dilution literature by quantifying the relative strength of competing mechanisms in a middle-income context and showing that cost-sharing economies dominate child-related dilution for most households. Policy discussion highlights the importance of public childcare subsidies and targeted credit access for rural parents, whose saving capacity is the most constrained by additional children. The study also demonstrates that fixed effects estimates of family structure can be upward-biased unless dynamic saving behavior and internal instruments are considered. Full article

Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) has emerged as a research focus in concrete crack remediation due to its environmental compatibility and efficient mineralization capacity. The hypersaline conditions of seawater (average 35 g/L NaCl) and alkaline environments (pH 12) within concrete cracks pose significant challenges to the survival of mineralization-capable microorganisms. To enhance microbial tolerance under these extreme conditions, this study employed a laboratory adaptive evolution strategy to successfully develop a Sporosarcina pasteurii strain demonstrating tolerance to 35 g/L NaCl and pH 12. Comparative analysis of growth characteristics (OD600), pH variation, urease activity, and specific urease activity revealed that the evolved strain maintained growth kinetics under harsh conditions comparable to the parental strain under normal conditions. Subsequent evaluations demonstrated the evolved strain’s superior salt–alkali tolerance through enhanced enzymatic activity, precipitation yield, particle size distribution, crystal morphology, and microstructure characterization under various saline–alkaline conditions. Whole-genome sequencing identified five non-synonymous mutated genes associated with ribosomal stability, transmembrane transport, and osmoprotectant synthesis. Transcriptomic profiling revealed 1082 deferentially expressed genes (543 upregulated, 539 downregulated), predominantly involved in ribosomal biogenesis, porphyrin metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and amino acid metabolism. In concrete remediation experiments, the evolved strain achieved superior performance with 89.3% compressive strength recovery and 48% reduction in water absorption rate. This study elucidates the molecular mechanisms underlying S. pasteurii’s salt–alkali tolerance and validates its potential application in the remediation of marine engineering. Full article

Background: Emotional intelligence is the ability to make decisions and adapt to life changes. This capacity may be conditioned by emotional states. Evidence shows that postpartum women experience these changes, which affect an estimated 80% of postpartum women and their parenting management. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of interventions based on reinforcing emotional intelligence in pregnant and postpartum women and their relationship with the different sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the mother and newborn. Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental experiment between August 2016 and December 2018. We recruited a total of 69 pregnant women (35 women in the intervention group and 34 women in the control group). The pregnant women in the intervention group were exposed to hybrid interventions through a mobile health application and in-person interventions as part of a training and emotional management program. The Trait-Meta Mood Scale (TMMS-24) evaluation questionnaire was administered to measure emotional intelligence across its three dimensions. Results: The results showed important clinical significance, although not statistical significance in all TMMS domains. Postpartum scores for clarity (mean: 29.20; SD 6.36 vs. 24.91; SD 6.67; p > 0.05), repair (mean: 28.43; SD 5.58; vs. 24.62; SD 7.04; p > 0.05), and attention (mean: 26.03; SD 6.08 vs. 23.29; SD 5.14; p > 0.05) were higher in the intervention group compared to the control group. The duration of gestation notably influenced “Clarity”, while work situations and parental support affected “emotional repair”. Conclusions: Educational training increased emotional competencies and equipped women with the emotional mechanisms needed to adopt new adaptation strategies. Training in emotional self-management during pregnancy has a greater impact on the “Clarity” of emotions. Full article

In the present study, five novel dexketoprofen amide derivatives with a free carboxyl group in their side chains were synthesized. The in vivo anti-inflammatory potential of dexketoprofen derivatives was evaluated using a carrageenan-induced paw edema model of acute inflammation. Additionally, the local and systemic redox status in rats following acute administration of the compounds was assessed by measuring levels of pro-oxidative markers and the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Among the analyzed molecules, derivatives 2 and 4 exhibited the most potent in vivo anti-inflammatory activity, showing effects comparable to those of the parent compound dexketoprofen. In vitro results revealed that all newly synthesized compounds exhibited low inhibitory activity toward COX-1, whereas only compound 4 showed significant COX-2 inhibition. The stronger binding affinity of derivative 4 for COX-2 in comparison to other tested compounds is likely attributed to its ability to form multiple electrostatic interactions within the enzyme’s active site. Furthermore, compounds 2 and 5 demonstrated efficacy comparable to the parent drug in restoring redox balance, indicating their potential antioxidant properties under acute inflammatory conditions. The findings of this study underscore the therapeutic potential of the novel dexketoprofen amide derivatives as dual-function agents with the capacity to modulate both inflammatory responses and oxidative stress. Dietary polyphenols’ role in early life is not clear. While accumulating studies show both beneficial and deleterious effects of maternal consumption of these bioactive compounds on offspring’s adult health, very few studies have focused on the impact of paternal consumption. In addition, the potential interaction of combined parental polyphenol consumption is still not known. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of maternal (gestation/lactation) and/or paternal (preconception) blackberry polyphenol (anthocyanins, ellagitannins, and quercetin) methanolic extract consumption on C57BL/6 female mice offspring. Blackberry polyphenol consumption by fathers improved their sperm production and increased fertility. Blackberry polyphenol consumption by fathers, but not mothers, increased their plasma antioxidant capacity. All parental interventions decreased offspring perinatal mortality, with combined fathers’ and mothers’ polyphenol consumption exerting the most pronounced effects. Paternal or maternal polyphenol consumption decreased plasma total antioxidant capacity in the female offspring. On the other hand, combined parental consumption had opposing effects on the offspring. Only maternal polyphenol interventions increased glucose tolerance in the female offspring. These data only partially confirm our hypothesis that combined paternal and maternal polyphenol intervention would lead to better outcomes in the offspring. These results further show that blackberry polyphenols’ effects on offspring health depend on whether their consumption occurred through the father, mother, or both. This suggests that in order to promote long-term health in descendants, nutritional interventions, including those with polyphenols, should target not only the mother but also the future father.
