Cumulative mistuning effects in electric vehicle wireless charging systems, arising from component tolerances, coil misalignments, and aging-induced drifts, can significantly degrade system performance. To mitigate this issue, this work establishes an analysis model for mistuned series–series-compensated wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. Through equivalent simplification of mistuned parameters, we systematically examine the effects of compensation capacitances and coil inductances on input impedance, output power, and efficiency in SS-compensated topologies across wide load ranges and different coupling coefficients. Results reveal that transmitter-side parameter deviations exert more pronounced impacts on input impedance and power gain than receiver-side variations. Remarkably, under receiver-side inductance mistuning of −20%, a significant 32° shift in the input impedance angle was observed. Experimental validation on a 500 W prototype confirms ≤5% maximum deviation between calculated and measured values for efficiency, input impedance angle, and power gain. Full article

The swift advancement of fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology brings forth a range of enhancements to address the increasing demand for data, the proliferation of smart devices, and the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT). This highly interconnected communication environment necessitates using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to achieve adequate channel capacity. In this article, a 2-port MIMO system using two flipped parallel 1 × 2 arrays and a 2-port MIMO system using two opposite 1 × 4 arrays designed and fabricated antennas for 5G wireless communication in the sub-6 GHz band, are presented, overcoming the limitations of previous designs in gain, radiation efficiency and MIMO performance. The designed and fabricated single-element antenna features a circular microstrip patch design based on ROGER 5880 (RT5880) substrate, which has a thickness of 1.57 mm, a permittivity of 2.2, and a tangential loss of 0.0009. The 2-port MIMO of two 1 × 2 arrays and the 2-port MIMO of two 1 × 4 arrays have overall dimensions of 132 × 66 × 1.57 mm3 and 140 × 132 × 1.57 mm3, respectively. The MIMO of two 1 × 2 arrays and MIMO of two 1 × 4 arrays encompass maximum gains of 8.3 dBi and 10.9 dBi, respectively, with maximum radiation efficiency reaching 95% and 97.46%. High MIMO performance outcomes are observed for both the MIMO of two 1 × 2 arrays and the MIMO of two 1 × 4 arrays, with the channel capacity loss (CCL) ˂ 0.4 bit/s/Hz and ˂0.3 bit/s/Hz, respectively, an envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) ˂ 0.006 and ˂0.003, respectively, directivity gain (DG) about 10 dB, and a total active reflection coefficient (TARC) under −10 dB, ensuring impedance matching and effective mutual coupling among neighboring parameters, which confirms their effectiveness for 5G applications. The three fabricated antennas were experimentally tested and implemented using the MIMO Application Framework version 19.5 for 5G systems, demonstrating operational effectiveness in 5G applications. A broadband, efficient monolithic microwave integrated circuit power amplifier (MMIC PA) in OMMIC’s 0.1 μm GaN-on-Si technology for 5G millimeter-wave communication is presented. This study concentrates on the output matching design, which has an important influence on the PA’s performance. A compact one-order synthesized transformer network (STN) is adopted to match the 50 Ω load to the extracted large-signal output model of the transistor. A dual-objective strategy is developed for parameter optimization, incorporating the impedance transformation trajectory inside the predefined optimal impedance domain (OID) that satisfies the required specifications, with approximation to selected optimal load impedances. By introducing a custom adjustment factor β into the error function, coupled with an automated iterative tuning process based on S-parameter simulations, desired broadband matching results can be rapidly achieved. The proposed two-stage PA occupies a small chip area of only 1.23 mm2 and demonstrates good frequency consistency over the 24–31 GHz band. Continuous-wave characterization shows a flat small-signal gain of 19.7 ± 0.5 dB; both the output power (Pout) and the power-added efficiency (PAE) at the 4 dB compression point remain smooth, ranging from 32.3 to 32.7 dBm and 35.5% to 37.8%, respectively. The peak PAE reaches up to nearly 40% at the center frequency. Full article

Aiming at the transient synchronization instability problem of grid-forming energy storage under a fault in the grid-connected inverter, this paper proposes an adaptive transient synchronization support strategy for grid-forming energy storage facing inverter faults. First, the equal area rule is employed to analyze the transient response mechanism of the grid-forming energy storage grid-connected inverter under faults, revealing the negative coupling relationship between active power output and transient stability, as well as the positive coupling relationship between reactive power output and transient stability. Based on this, through the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the fault overcurrent, the negative correlation between the fault inrush current and impedance and the positive correlations among the fault steady-state current, active power, and voltage at the point of common coupling are identified. Then, a variable proportional–integral controller is designed to adaptively correct the active power reference value command, and the active power during the fault is gradually restored via the frequency feedback mechanism. Meanwhile, the reactive power reference value is dynamically adjusted according to the voltage at the point of common coupling to effectively support the voltage. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified in MATLAB/Simulink. Full article

High safety gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is used in lithium metal solid state batteries, which has the advantages of high energy density, wide temperature range, high safety, and is considered as a subversive new generation battery technology. However, solid-state lithium batteries with multiple layers and large capacity currently have poor cycle life and a large gap between the actual output cycle capacity retention rate and the theoretical level. In this paper, polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN)—lithium perchlorate (LiClO4)—lithium lanthanum zirconium tantalate (LLZTO) gel polymer electrolytes was prepared by UV curing process using a UV curing machine at a speed of 0.01 m/min for 10 s, with the temperature controlled at 30 °C and wavelength 365 nm. In order to study the performance and failure mechanism of multilayer solid state batteries, single and three layers of solid state batteries with ceramic/polymer composite gel electrolyte were assembled. The results show that the rate and cycle performance of single-layer solid state battery with gel electrolyte are better than those of three-layer solid state battery. As the number of cycles increases, the interface impedance of both single-layer and three-layer electrolyte membrane solid-state batteries shows an increasing trend. Specifically, the three-layer battery impedance increased from 17 Ω to 42 Ω after 100 cycles, while the single-layer battery showed a smaller increase, from 2.2 Ω to 4.8 Ω, indicating better interfacial stability. After 100 cycles, the interface impedance of multi-layer solid-state batteries increases by 9.61 times that of single-layer batteries. After 100 cycles, the corresponding capacity retention rates were 48.9% and 15.6%, respectively. This work provides a new strategy for large capacity solid state batteries with gel electrolyte design. Full article

Power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) creates a safe test environment to connect simulations with real hardware under test (HuT). Therefore, an interface algorithm (IA) must be chosen. The ideal transformer method (ITM) and the partial circuit duplication (PCD) are popular IAs, where a distinction is made between voltage- (V-) and current-type (C-) IAs. Depending on the sample time of the simulator and further delays, simulation accuracy is reduced and instability can occur due to negative feedback in the V-ITM and C-ITM control loops, which makes PHIL operation impossible. In the case of positive feedback, such as with the V-PCD and C-PCD, the delay causes destructive interference, which results in a phase shift and attenuation of the output signal. In this article, a novel damped Smith predictor (SP) for positive feedback PHIL IAs is presented, which significantly reduces destructive interference while allowing stable operation at low linking impedances at V-PCD and high linking impedances at C-PCD, thus reducing losses in the system. Experimental results show a reduction in phase shift by 21.17° and attenuation improvement of 24.3% for V-PCD at a sample time of 100 µs. The SP transfer functions are also derived and integrated into the listed negative feedback IAs, resulting in an increase in the gain margin (GM) from approximately one to three, which significantly enhances system stability. The proposed methods can improve stability and accuracy, which can be further improved by calculating the HuT impedance in real-time and dynamically adapting the SP model. Stable PHIL operation with SP is also possible with SP model errors or sudden HuT impedance changes, as long as deviations stay within the presented limits. Full article

On Control Synthesis of Hydraulic Servomechanisms in Flight Controls Applications

This paper presents some of the most significant findings in the design of a hydraulic servomechanism for flight controls, which were primarily achieved by the first author during his activity in an aviation institute. These results are grouped into four main topics. The first one outlines a classical theory, from the 1950s–1970s, of the analysis of nonlinear automatic systems and namely the issue of absolute stability. The uninformed public may be misled by the adjective “absolute”. This is not a “maximalist” solution of stability but rather highlights in the system of equations a nonlinear function that describes, for the case of hydraulic servomechanisms, the flow-control dependence in the distributor spool. This function is odd, and it is therefore located in quadrants 1 and 3. The decision regarding stability is made within the so-called Lurie problem and is materialized by a matrix inequality, called the Lefschetz condition, which must be satisfied by the parameters of the electrohydraulic servomechanism and also by the components of the control feedback vector. Another approach starts from a classical theorem of V. M. Popov, extended in a stochastic framework by T. Morozan and I. Ursu, which ends with the description of the local and global spool valve flow-control characteristics that ensure stability in the large with respect to bounded perturbations for the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism. We add that a conjecture regarding the more pronounced flexibility of mathematical models in relation to mathematical instruments (theories) was used. Furthermore, the second topic concerns, the importance of the impedance characteristic of the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism in preventing flutter of the flight controls is emphasized. Impedance, also called dynamic stiffness, is defined as the ratio, in a dynamic regime, between the output exerted force (at the actuator rod of the servomechanism) and the displacement induced by this force under the assumption of a blocked input. It is demonstrated in the paper that there are two forms of the impedance function: one that favors the appearance of flutter and another that allows for flutter damping. It is interesting to note that these theoretical considerations were established in the institute’s reports some time before their introduction in the Aviation Regulation AvP.970. However, it was precisely the absence of the impedance criterion in the regulation at the appropriate time that ultimately led, by chance or not, to a disaster: the crash of a prototype due to tailplane flutter. A third topic shows how an important problem in the theory of automatic systems of the 1970s–1980s, namely the robust synthesis of the servomechanism, is formulated, applied and solved in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In general, the solution of a robust servomechanism problem consists of two distinct components: a servo-compensator, in fact an internal model of the exogenous dynamics, and a stabilizing compensator. These components are adapted in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In addition to the classical case mentioned above, a synthesis problem of an anti-windup (anti-saturation) compensator is formulated and solved. The fourth topic, and the last one presented in detail, is the synthesis of a fuzzy supervised neurocontrol (FSNC) for the position tracking of an electrohydraulic servomechanism, with experimental validation, in the laboratory, of this control law. The neurocontrol module is designed using a single-layered perceptron architecture. Neurocontrol is in principle optimal, but it is not free from saturation. To this end, in order to counteract saturation, a Mamdani-type fuzzy logic was developed, which takes control when neurocontrol has saturated. It returns to neurocontrol when it returns to normal, respectively, when saturation is eliminated. What distinguishes this FSNC law is its simplicity and efficiency and especially the fact that against quite a few opponents in the field, it still works very well on quite complicated physical systems. Finally, a brief section reviews some recent works by the authors, in which current approaches to hydraulic servomechanisms are presented: the backstepping control synthesis technique, input delay treated with Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals, and critical stability treated with Lyapunov–Malkin theory. An angled single-excitation elliptical vibration system for ultrasonic-assisted machining was developed in this paper, which was composed of a giant magnetostrictive transducer and an angled horn. Based on the continuous boundary conditions between the components, the frequency equation of the angled vibration system was derived, and the resonant frequencies of vibration systems with different angles were theoretically calculated. The finite element method was employed to investigate the impact of varying angles on the resonant frequency, elliptical trajectory, phase difference, and output amplitude of the vibration systems. The electrical impedance of the vibration system and the longitudinal and transverse vibration amplitudes at the end face of the horn were tested experimentally. The results show that the resonant frequency and phase difference in the vibration system decreased, the transverse amplitude of the output elliptical trajectory increased, and the longitudinal amplitude decreased with the increase in the included angle. The elliptical trajectories obtained from the test were generally consistent with the calculated results, and the calculated values of the resonant frequencies of the three angled vibration systems were in good agreement with the experimental test values. This paper describes a compact multi-port sub-6 GHz multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system tailored for 5G NR mobile terminals operating in the n77 (3.3–4.2 GHz), n78 (3.3–3.8 GHz), and n79 (4.4–5.0 GHz) frequency bands. The proposed design leverages a shared coupling approach that exploits the smartphone metal frame as the radiating element, facilitating efficient integration within the spatial constraints of modern mobile devices. A two-stage method is used to mitigate the mutual coupling and correlation issues typically encountered when designing compact MIMO configurations. Initially, a four-port structure is used to evaluate broadband impedance and spatial feasibility. Based on the observed limitations in terms of isolation and the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), the final configuration was reconfigured as an optimized two-port layout with a refined coupling geometry and effective current path control. The fabricated two-port prototype exhibited a measured voltage standing wave ratio below 3:1 across the n78 band on both ports, with the isolation levels attaining –12.4 dB and ECCs below 0.12. The radiation efficiency exceeded −6 dB across the operational band, and the radiation patterns were stable at 3.3, 3.5, and 3.8 GHz, confirming that the system was appropriate for MIMO deployment. The antenna supports asymmetric per-port efficiency targets ranging from −4.5 to −10 dB. These are the realistic layout constraints of commercial smartphones. In summary, this study shows that a metal frame integrated two-port MIMO antenna enables wideband sub-6 GHz operation by meeting the key impedance and system-level performance requirements. Our method can be used to develop a scalable platform assisting future multi-band antenna integration in mass-market 5G smartphones. Full article

Interpretable Machine Learning for Osteopenia Detection: A Proof-of-Concept Study Using Bioelectrical Impedance in Perimenopausal Women

Objectives: The early detection of low bone mineral density (BMD) is essential for preventing osteoporosis and related complications. While dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) remains the gold standard for diagnosis, its cost and limited availability restrict its use in large-scale screening. This study investigated whether raw bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) data combined with explainable machine learning (ML) models could accurately classify osteopenia in women aged 40 to 55. Methods: In a cross-sectional design, 138 women underwent same-day BIA and DXA assessments. Participants were categorized as osteopenic (T-score between −1.0 and −2.5; n = 33) or normal (T-score ≥ −1.0) based on DXA results. Overall, 24.1% of the sample were classified as osteopenic, and 32.85% were postmenopausal. Raw BIA outputs were used as input features, including impedance values, phase angles, and segmental tissue parameters. A sequential forward feature selection (SFFS) algorithm was employed to optimize input dimensionality. Four ML classifiers were trained using stratified five-fold cross-validation, and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) were applied to interpret feature contributions. Results: The neural network (NN) model achieved the highest classification accuracy (92.12%) using 34 selected features, including raw impedance measurements, derived body composition indices such as regional lean mass estimates and the edema index, as well as a limited number of categorical variables, including self-reported physical activity status. SHAP analysis identified muscle mass indices and fluid distribution metrics, features previously associated with bone health, as the most influential predictors in the current model. Other classifiers performed comparably but with lower precision or interpretability. Conclusions: ML models based on raw BIA data can classify osteopenia with high accuracy and clinical transparency. This approach provides a cost-effective and interpretable alternative for the early identification of individuals at risk for low BMD in resource-limited or primary care settings. Full article

The increasing need for high-data-rate wireless applications in 5G and IoT networks requires sophisticated power amplifier (PA) designs in the sub-6 GHz spectrum. This work introduces a high-efficiency Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based power amplifier optimized for the 2.3–2.5 GHz frequency band, using digital pre-distortion (DPD) to improve spectral fidelity and reduce distortion. The design employs load modulation and dynamic biasing to optimize power-added efficiency (PAE) and linearity. Simulation findings indicate a gain of 13 dB, a 3 dB compression point at 29.7 dBm input power, and 40 dBm output power, with a power-added efficiency of 60% and a drain efficiency of 65%. The power amplifier achieves a return loss of more than 15 dB throughout the frequency spectrum, ensuring robust impedance matching and consistent performance. Electromagnetic co-simulations confirm its stability under high-frequency settings, rendering it appropriate for next-generation high-efficiency wireless communication systems. Full article

This paper proposes a coordinated control strategy for grid-forming inverters (GFMs) to address two critical challenges in evolving power systems. These are the active harmonic mitigation under nonlinear loading conditions and dynamic overcurrent control during grid disturbances. The proposed framework integrates a shunt active filter (SAF) mechanism within the GFM control structure to achieve a real-time suppression of harmonic distortions from the inverter and grid currents. In parallel, a virtual impedance-based dynamic current limiting strategy is incorporated to constrain fault current magnitudes, ensuring the protection of power electronic components and maintaining system stability. The SAF operates in a current-injection mode aligned with harmonic components, derived via instantaneous reference frame transformations and selective harmonic extraction. The virtual impedance control (VIC) dynamically modulates the inverter’s output impedance profile based on grid conditions, enabling adaptive response during fault transients to limit overcurrent stress. A detailed analysis is performed for the coordinated control of the grid-forming inverter. Supported by simulations and analytical methods, the approach ensures system stability while addressing overcurrent limitations and active harmonic filtering under nonlinear load conditions. This establishes a viable solution for the next-generation inverter-dominated power systems where reliability, power quality, and fault resilience are paramount. Full article

DC link power supply systems that integrate power electronic converters are increasingly being adopted. In particular, emerging “source–load” systems, in which the DC link interfaces with converters, have attracted increasing research interest due to concerns about power quality and system stability. This paper addresses mid- and low-frequency oscillation issues in DC link voltage supplied induction motor drives (IMDs). It begins by constructing a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) state-space model of the induction motor. For the first time, the dq-axis control system is represented as an equivalent admittance model that forms two single-input single-output (SISO) loops. The PI controller and induction motor are integrated into the inverter’s input impedance model; Furthermore, the effectiveness and accuracy of the derived impedance model are experimentally validated under various operating conditions of the induction motor using a custom-built test platform. The experimental results offer a practical reference for system enhancement and stability evaluation. Full article

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) early screening requires non-invasive, high-sensitivity detection of low-abundance biomarkers in complex biofluids like saliva. In this study, we present a miniaturized, silicon-based electrochemical sensor for sequential detection of two AD salivary biomarkers, lactoferrin (Lf) and amyloid β-protein 1-42 (Aβ1-42), on a single reusable electrode. The sensor features a three-electrode system fabricated by sputter-coating a quartz substrate with gold (Au) sensing electrodes, which are further modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to form 3D dendritic structures that enhance surface area and electron transfer. To improve specificity, immunomagnetic beads (MBs) are employed to selectively capture and isolate target biomarkers from saliva samples. These MB–biomarker complexes are introduced into a polydimethylsiloxane chamber aligned with Au sensing electrodes, where a detachable magnet localizes the complexes onto the electrode surface to amplify redox signals. The AuNPs/MBs sensor achieves detection limits of 2 μg/mL for Lf and 0.1 pg/mL for Aβ1-42, outperforming commercial ELISA kits (37.5 pg/mL for Aβ1-42) and covering physiological salivary concentrations. After the MBs capture the biomarkers, the sensor can output the result within one minute. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements confirm enhanced electron transfer kinetics on AuNP-decorated surfaces, while linear correlations (R2 > 0.95) validate quantitative accuracy across biomarker ranges. The compact and integrated design eliminates reliance on bulky instrumentation and enables user-friendly operation, establishing a promising platform for portable, cost-effective AD screening and monitoring. The lower-limb assistance exoskeleton is increasingly being utilized in various fields due to its excellent performance in human body assistance. As a crucial component of robots, the joint is expected to be designed with a high-output torque to support hip and knee movement, and lightweight to enhance user experience. Contrasted with the elastic actuation with harmonic drive and other flexible transmission, the non-elastic quasi-direct actuation is more promising to be applied in exoskeleton due to its advanced dynamic performance and lightweight feature. Moreover, robot joints are commonly driven electrically, especially by a permanent magnet synchronous motor which is rapidly developed because of its compact structure and powerful output. Based on different topological structures, numerous research focus on torque density, ripple torque suppression, efficiency improvement, and thermal management to improve motor performance. Furthermore, the elaborated joint with powerful motors should be controlled compliantly to improve flexibility and interaction, and therefore, popular complaint control algorithms like impedance and admittance controls are discussed in this paper. Through the review and analysis of the integrated design from mechanism structure to control algorithm, it is expected to indicate developmental prospects of lower-limb assistance exoskeleton joints with optimized performance.
