Polymicrobial biofilms involving fungal and bacterial species are increasingly recognized as contributors to persistent infections, particularly in the oral cavity. Candida albicans and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans are two commensals that can turn into opportunistic pathogens and are able to form robust biofilms. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the interaction dynamics between these two microorganisms and to evaluate their susceptibility to fluconazole and azithromycin in single- and mixed-species forms. Methods: Biofilm biomass was quantified using crystal violet assays, while biofilm cell viability was assessed through CFU enumeration (biofilm viability assay). To assess the resistance properties of single versus mixed-species coincubations, we applied the antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) to each drug, and analysed spatial organization with confocal laser scanning microscopy, using PNA-FISH. Results: The results indicated that both species can coexist without significant mutual inhibition. However, a non-reciprocal synergism was also observed, whereby mixed-species biofilm conditions promoted the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans, while C. albicans growth remained stable. As expected, antimicrobial tolerance was elevated in mixed cultures, likely due to enhanced extracellular matrix production and potential quorum-sensing interactions, contributing to increased resistance against azithromycin and fluconazole. Conclusions: This study provides novel insights into previously rarely explored interactions between C. albicans and A. actinomycetemcomitans. These findings underscore the importance of investigating interspecies interactions within polymicrobial biofilms, as understanding their mechanisms, such as quorum-sensing molecules and metabolic cooperation, can contribute to improved diagnostics and more effective targeted therapeutic strategies against polymicrobial infections. Background/Objectives: Anxiety before ophthalmic surgery under local anesthesia may hinder patient cooperation and surgical outcomes. Nurse-led auditory interventions offer a promising non-pharmacological approach to perioperative anxiety management. This study evaluated the effectiveness of superimposed binaural beats (SBBs)—classical music layered with frequency differentials—in reducing anxiety during pterygium surgery with conjunctival autografting. Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, 111 adult patients scheduled for elective pterygium excision with conjunctival autografting under local anesthesia were allocated to one of three groups: SBBs, plain music (PM), or silence (control). A trained perioperative nurse administered all auditory interventions. The patients’ anxiety was assessed using the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory—State (STAI-S), and physiological parameters (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation) were recorded before and after surgery. Results: The SBB group showed significantly greater reductions in their STAI-S scores (p < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (p = 0.011), heart rate (p = 0.003), and respiratory rate (p = 0.009) compared to the PM and control groups. No adverse events occurred. Conclusions: SBBs are a safe, nurse-delivered auditory intervention that significantly reduces perioperative anxiety and supports physiological stability. Their integration into routine nursing care for minor ophthalmic surgeries is both feasible and beneficial. Trial Registration: This study was registered with the Thai Clinical Trials Registry (TCTR) under registration number TCTR20250125002 on 25 January 2025. Full article

Background and Purpose: Stratification based on specific image biomarkers applicable in clinical settings could help optimize treatment outcomes for recurrent non-small cell lung cancer patients. For this purpose, we aimed to determine the clinical impact of positive delta changes (any difference above zero > 0) between baseline [18F]FDG PET/CT metrics before the first treatment course and reirradiation. Material/Methods: Forty-seven patients who underwent thoracic reirradiation with curative intent at our institute between 2013 and 2021 met the inclusion criteria. All patients had histologically verified NSCLC, ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group) ≤ 2, and underwent [18F]FDG PET/CT for initial staging and re-staging before primary radiotherapy and reirradiation, respectively. The time interval between radiation treatments was at least nine months. Quantitative metabolic volume and intensity parameters were measured before first irradiation and before reirradiation, and the difference above zero (>0; delta change) between them was statistically correlated to locoregional control (LRC), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). Results: Patients were followed for a median time of 33 months after reirradiation. The median OS was 21.8 months (95%-CI: 16.3–27.3), the median PFS was 12 months (95%-CI: 6.7–17.3), and the median LRC was 13 months (95%-CI: 9.0–17.0). Multivariate analysis revealed that the delta changes in SULpeak, SUVmax, and SULmax of the lymph nodes significantly impacted OS (SULpeak p = 0.017; SUVmax p = 0.006; SULmax p = 0.006), PFS (SULpeak p = 0.010; SUVmax p = 0.009; SULmax p = 0.009), and LRC (SULpeak p < 0.001; SUVmax p = 0.003; SULmax p = 0.003). Conclusions: Delta changes in SULpeak, SUVmax, and SULmax of the metastatic lymph nodes significantly impacted all clinical endpoints (OS, PFS and LRC) in recurrent NSCLC patients treated with reirradiation. Hence, these imaging biomarkers could be helpful with regard to patient selection in this challenging clinical situation. Full article

Magnetic climbing robots hold significant value for operations in complex industrial environments, particularly for the inspection and maintenance of large-scale metal structures. High-precision spatial positioning is the foundation for enabling autonomous and intelligent operations in such environments. However, the existing literature lacks a systematic and comprehensive review of spatial positioning techniques tailored to magnetic climbing robots. This paper addresses this gap by categorizing and evaluating current spatial positioning approaches. Initially, single-sensor-based methods are analyzed with a focus on external sensor approaches. Then, multi-sensor fusion methods are explored to overcome the shortcomings of single-sensor-based approaches. Multi-sensor fusion methods include simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), integrated positioning systems, and multi-robot cooperative positioning. To address non-uniform noise and environmental interference, both analytical and learning-based reinforcement approaches are reviewed. Common analytical methods include Kalman-type filtering, particle filtering, and correlation filtering, while typical learning-based approaches involve deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and neural networks (NNs). Finally, challenges and future development trends are discussed. Multi-sensor fusion and lightweight design are the future trends in the advancement of spatial positioning technologies for magnetic climbing robots. Full article

In sustainable development studies, a key question is how the abundance of natural resources influences long-run economic growth. However, there is no consensus on this issue. Some literature suggests a negative impact, while other studies find no effect at all, and other research indicates a positive impact. This study aims to examine the relationship between natural resource rents, renewable energy, and economic growth in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries over the period from 1990 to 2023. The study utilizes the Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) to provide reliable findings across different quantiles. We also incorporate a series of control variables, including capital, labor force participation, non-renewable energy, and trade openness. The findings indicate that natural resources rent enhances economic growth in GCC countries, supporting the Rostow hypothesis. Although renewable energy has a positive impact on economic growth, it does not have an effect on natural resource rents. Additionally, capital, labor force participation, non-renewable energy, and trade openness play a critical role in raising economic growth in these countries. Based on the empirical results, this study provides several valuable recommendations for policymakers to enhance the management of natural resources in GCC countries. Full article

Regarding the distortion correction problem of large field of view wide-angle cameras commonly used in railway visual inspection systems, this paper proposes a novel online calibration method for non-specially made cooperative calibration objects. Based on the radial distortion divisor model, first, the spatial coordinates of natural spatial landmark points are constructed according to the known track gauge value between two parallel rails and the spacing value between sleepers. By using the image coordinate relationships corresponding to these spatial coordinates, the coordinates of the distortion center point are solved according to the radial distortion fundamental matrix. Then, a constraint equation is constructed based on the collinear constraint of vanishing points in railway images, and the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm is used to found the radial distortion coefficients. Moreover, the distortion coefficients and the coordinates of the distortion center are re-optimized according to the least squares method (LSM) between points and the fitted straight line. Finally, based on the above, the distortion correction is carried out for the distorted railway images captured by the camera. The experimental results show that the above method can efficiently and accurately perform online distortion correction for large field of view wide-angle cameras used in railway inspection without the participation of specially made cooperative calibration objects. The whole method is simple and easy to implement, with high correction accuracy, and is suitable for the rapid distortion correction of camera images in railway online visual inspection. Full article

This paper proposes a strategic framework to enhance nuclear energy governance by advancing the Qudrat-Ullah Nuclear Peace and Trust (Q-NPT) framework. Designed to complement existing treaties such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards, Q-NPT integrates principles of equity, transparency, and trust to address persistent governance challenges. The framework emphasizes sustainable nuclear technology access, multilateral cooperation, and integration with global energy transition goals. Through an analysis of institutional, economic, technological, and geopolitical barriers, the study outlines actionable pathways for adoption, including legal harmonization, differentiated financial instruments, and deployment of advanced verification technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and remote monitoring. A phased implementation timeline is presented, enabling adaptive learning and stakeholder engagement over short-, medium-, and long-term horizons. Regional case studies, including Serbia and Latin America, demonstrate the framework’s applicability in diverse contexts. By linking nuclear policy to broader climate, energy equity, and global security objectives, Q-NPT offers an operational and inclusive roadmap for future-ready governance. This approach contributes to the literature on energy systems transformation by situating nuclear governance within a sustainability-oriented, trust-centered paradigm. Full article

This paper studies deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based joint resource allocation and three-dimensional (3D) trajectory optimization for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)–ground access point (GAP) cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communication in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems. Cooperative and non-cooperative users adopt different signal transmission strategies to meet diverse, task-oriented, quality-of-service requirements. Specifically, the DRL framework based on the Soft Actor–Critic algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize user scheduling, power allocation, and UAV trajectory in continuous action spaces. Closed-form power allocation and maximum weight bipartite matching are integrated to enable efficient user pairing and resource management. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly enhances system performance in terms of throughput, spectral efficiency, and interference management, while enabling robustness against channel uncertainties in dynamic IIoT environments. The findings indicate that combining model-free reinforcement learning with conventional optimization provides a viable solution for adaptive resource management in dynamic UAV-GAP cooperative communication scenarios. Environmental crime has been increasingly recognised as transnational organised crime, but efforts to build a coherent and effective international response are still in development and under threat from shifts in the funding landscape. This mixed methods study addresses the role of one significant group of actors in environmental crime enforcement, which are non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who gather intelligence that can be shared with law enforcement and regulatory agencies. The study compares their intelligence practices to findings from traditional intelligence sectors, with a focus upon criminal justice and policing. The research generated quantitative and qualitative data from NGO practitioners, which is integrated to discern three overarching themes inherent in these NGOs’ intelligence practices: the implementation of formal intelligence practices is still underway in the sector; there remains a need to improve cooperation to break down silos between agencies and NGOs, which requires an improvement in trust between these entities; the operating environment provides both opportunities and challenges to the abilities of the NGOs to deliver impact. The study concludes by positing that the characteristics of NGOs mean that this situation constitutes ‘green intelligence’, contextualising intelligence theory and highlighting areas in which agencies can further combat environmental crime. In the field of high-altitude operations, the frequent occurrence of fall accidents is usually closely related to safety measures such as the incorrect use of safety locks and the wrong installation of safety belts. At present, the manual inspection method cannot achieve real-time monitoring of the safety status of the operators and is prone to serious consequences due to human negligence. This paper designs a new type of high-altitude operation safety device based on the STM32F103 microcontroller. This device integrates ultra-wideband (UWB) ranging technology, thin-film piezoresistive stress sensors, Beidou positioning, intelligent voice alarm, and intelligent safety lock. By fusing five modes, it realizes the functions of safety status detection and precise positioning. It can provide precise geographical coordinate positioning and vertical ground distance for the workers, ensuring the safety and standardization of the operation process. This safety device adopts multi-modal fusion high-altitude operation safety monitoring technology. The UWB module adopts a bidirectional ranging algorithm to achieve centimeter-level ranging accuracy. It can accurately determine dangerous heights of 2 m or more even in non-line-of-sight environments. The vertical ranging upper limit can reach 50 m, which can meet the maintenance height requirements of most transmission and distribution line towers. It uses a silicon carbide MEMS piezoresistive sensor innovatively, which is sensitive to stress detection and resistant to high temperatures and radiation. It builds a Beidou and Bluetooth cooperative positioning system, which can achieve centimeter-level positioning accuracy and an identification accuracy rate of over 99%. It can maintain meter-level positioning accuracy of geographical coordinates in complex environments. The development of this safety device can build a comprehensive and intelligent safety protection barrier for workers engaged in high-altitude operations. Full article

Cross-border energy trading activity via interconnection has received much attention in Southern Asia to help the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region’s energy deficit states. This research article proposed a smart metering system to reduce energy losses and increase distribution sector efficiency. The implementation of smart metering systems in utility management plays a pivotal role in advancing several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), i.e.; SDG (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG Climate Action. By enabling real-time monitoring, accurate measurement, and data-driven management of energy resources, smart meters promote efficient consumption, reduce losses, and encourage sustainable behaviors among consumers. The adoption of a smart metering system along with Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis, socio-economic analysis, current challenges, and future prospects was also investigated. Besides the economics of the electrical distribution system, one feeder with non-technical losses of about 16% was selected, and the cost–benefit analysis and cost–benefit ratio was estimated for the SAARC region. The import/export ratio is disturbing in various SAARC grids, and a solution in terms of community microgrids is presented from Pakistan’s perspective as a case study. The proposed work gives a guidelines for SAARC countries to reduce their losses and improve their system functionality. It gives a composite solution across multi-faceted evaluation for the betterment of a large region. Full article

However, the influence of family and personal medical history (FPMH) on clinical and treatment outcomes with TKI therapy remains underexplored. Clinical variables assessed included demographic data, comorbidities, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, tumor characteristics, genetic mutations (EGFR, ALK, ROS1), treatment responses, toxicity profiles, and survival outcomes. Statistical analyses included Chi-square tests, t-tests, Mann–Whitney U tests, Spearman correlation, and univariate logistic regression (p < 0.05 threshold for significance). Results: Patients with FPMH (n = 34) had a significantly higher burden of chronic diseases (58.8% vs. 15.7%), poorer ECOG scores (≥3: 8.8% vs. 1.0%), increased recurrence (41.2% vs. 20.6%), and greater chemotherapy-related toxicity (50.0% vs. 28.4%) compared to those without FPMH (n = 102). However, there were no significant differences in survival duration or mutation status between the two groups. Conclusions: FPMH may be a predictive factor for treatment complications and recurrence in NSCLC patients receiving TKIs, although it does not appear to influence survival or genetic mutation status. These findings support the need for personalized clinical monitoring strategies based on medical history. Full article

The Gunung Sewu UNESCO Global Geopark (GSUGGp) is one of Indonesia’s 12 UNESCO-designated geoparks. Its presence is expected to enhance rural development by boosting the local economy through tourism. However, there is a lack of statistical evidence quantifying the economic benefits of geopark development, mainly due to the complex, non-linear nature of these impacts and limited village-level economic data available in Indonesia. To address this gap, this study aims to measure how socio-economic and environmental factors contribute to the Village Development Index (VDI) within the GSUGGp area, which includes the districts of Gunung Kidul, Wonogiri, and Pacitan. A machine learning–deep learning approach was employed, utilizing four algorithms grouped into eight models, with hyperparameter tuning and cross-validation, tested on a sample of 92 villages. The analysis revealed insights into how 17 independent variables influence the VDI. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm outperformed others, achieving an R-squared of 0.76 and an RMSE of 0.040, surpassing random forest, CART, SVM, and linear models. Economically related factors—considered the foundation of rural development—had the strongest impact on village progress within GSUGGp. Additionally, features related to tourism, especially beach tourism linked to geological landscapes, contributed significantly. These findings are valuable for guiding geopark management and policy decisions, emphasizing the importance of integrated strategies and strong cooperation among local governments at the regency and provincial levels. This study investigates economic decision-making behaviors among welfare recipients in Miami, Florida, by leveraging well-established experimental protocols: the Guessing Game, the Prudence Measurement Task, the Risk Aversion Task, and the Stag Hunt Game. For this purpose, our study defines financial decisions as the underlying individual preferences that serve as validated proxies for savings behavior, debt management, job-search intensity, and participation in cooperative finance. A central objective is to compare the behavior of welfare recipients to that of undergraduate students, a cohort typically used in experimental economics research. The analysis reveals significant differences between the two groups in strategic thinking and coordination, particularly across ethnic and gender lines. Non-Hispanic/Latino participants in Miami displayed significantly higher average guesses in the Guessing Game compared to their counterparts in Tucson, indicating potential discrepancies in the depth of strategic reasoning. Additionally, female participants in Tucson exhibited higher levels of coordination in the Stag Hunt Game compared to females in Miami, suggesting variance in cooperative behavior between these groups. Despite these findings, regression models demonstrate that location, gender, and ethnicity collectively account for only a small fraction of the observed variance, as evidenced by low R2 values and substantial mean squared errors across all games. These results suggest that individual heterogeneity, rather than broad demographic variables, may be more influential in shaping economic decisions. This study underscores the complexity of generalizing findings from traditional student samples to more diverse populations, highlighting the need for further investigation into the socioeconomic factors that drive financial decision-making. The space flexible netted pocket capture system provides a flexible and stable solution for capturing non-cooperative space objects. This paper investigates the control problem for the capture of non-cooperative targets undergoing motion. A dynamic model of the capturing net is established based on the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) and equivalent plate–shell theory. A contact collision force model is developed using a spring–damper model. Subsequently, a feedforward controller is designed based on the estimated collision force from the dynamic model, aiming to compensate for the collision effects between the target and the net. By incorporating the collision estimation data, an extended state observer is designed, taking into account the collision estimation errors and the flexible uncertainties. A sliding mode feedback controller is then designed using the fast terminal sliding mode control method. Finally, simulation analysis of target capture under different motion states is conducted. The results demonstrate that the spacecraft system’s position and attitude average flutter amplitudes are less than 102 m and 102 deg. In comparison to standard sliding mode control, the designed controller reduces the attitude jitter amplitude by an order of magnitude, thus demonstrating its effectiveness and superiority.
