In this study, a novel SiC/rGO nanocomposite-modified glassy carbon electrode (SiC/rGO/GCE) was developed as a simple, cost-effective, and efficient electrochemical platform for metronidazole (MTZ) detection. The combination of silicon carbide (SiC) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) provides a favorable interface with a high electroactive surface area, efficient electron transfer, and enhanced electrocatalytic activity. The mor-phology and surface characteristics of the modified electrode were investigated by scan-ning electron microscopy (SEM), while its electrochemical properties were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results confirmed successful electrode modification and improved electron-transfer kinetics compared with the bare GCE. The main experimental parameters were systematically optimized, with the optimum conditions established at pH 10, an accumulation time of 300 s, and an accu-mulation potential of 0.5 V. Under these conditions, the SiC/rGO/GCE exhibited a broad linear response to MTZ over the concentration range of 5–5000 µmol/dm3, with a detection limit of 0.5 µmol/dm3 (S/N ≥ 3). The enhanced analytical performance is attributed to the synergistic contribution of rGO and SiC, where rGO promotes rapid electron transport and provides a large electroactive surface, while SiC contributes additional active sites and structural stability. The sensor was successfully applied to pharmaceutical samples, providing recoveries of 99.85–102.29% with RSD values below 2%. These results demon-strate the practical potential of the proposed sensor for reliable MTZ determination. Fur-ther validation in food and biological matrices and comparison with reference chromato-graphic methods will be necessary to establish its broader analytical applicability. Full article

In the present work, graphene-modified zinc oxide (ZnO-rGO) and fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) thin films were successfully fabricated using a simple, low-cost pulsed spray pyrolysis technique. The structural, morphological, optical, electrical, and surface electronic properties of the deposited films were systematically characterized. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the formation of polycrystalline ZnO- and SnO2-based phases with crystallite sizes in the nanometer range. The crystallographic parameters, microstrain, and dislocation density of the deposited films were found to be influenced by the incorporation of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and fluorine dopants. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed compact and homogeneous surface morphologies with good film coverage and well-defined nanocrystalline features. Optical characterization demonstrated the wide-bandgap semiconducting behavior of the deposited films, with optical bandgap energies ranging from 3.262 to 3.312 eV for the ZnO-rGO films and from 3.91 to 4.01 eV for the FTO films. Kelvin probe measurements yielded work-function values in the range of approximately 5.0–5.2 eV, indicating favorable surface electronic characteristics suitable for optoelectronic applications. Furthermore, fluorine incorporation enhanced the dielectric response of the SnO2 films, particularly in the low-frequency region owing to increased interfacial polarization effects. The obtained results demonstrate that pulsed spray pyrolysis provides a simple, cost-effective, and efficient route for fabricating ZnO-rGO and FTO thin films with desirable structural, optical, electrical, and surface electronic properties. These findings highlight the considerable potential of the developed materials for transparent electrodes and a wide range of optoelectronic applications. Full article

To address prevalent industrial challenges, including the high cost of fabricating microstructures via photolithography and 3D printing, impurity residues easily generated by conventional physical/chemical pore-forming techniques, and the limited sensitivity of regular capacitive sensors, this paper innovatively proposes an integrated low-temperature in situ gas foaming strategy using ammonium bicarbonate for the fabrication of porous TPU-based ionic gels. Relying on the complete gaseous decomposition property of ammonium bicarbonate upon heating, a three-dimensionally interconnected continuous porous network is spontaneously constructed inside the polymer matrix. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is selected as the continuous polymer phase, and [EMIM][TFSI] imidazolium ionic liquid is blended as the ion source to synthesize composite ionic gel substrates. A PDMS composite slurry filled with graphene is employed to prepare flexible substrates, followed by low-temperature oxygen plasma surface modification to introduce polar functional groups such as hydroxyl and carboxyl onto electrode surfaces. A standard sandwich-structured ionic pressure sensor with the configuration of “top modified electrode—porous ionic gel dielectric layer—bottom modified electrode” is finally assembled. The porous framework and modified electrodes constitute a dual synergistic enhancement system: the porous structure markedly reduces the equivalent elastic modulus of the gel and improves its compressive deformation capacity; polar-modified electrodes optimize the interfacial compatibility between electrodes and gels, shorten ion migration paths and lower interfacial contact resistance. Systematic calibration of multiple batches of parallel samples reveals that the as-fabricated sensor achieves a high sensitivity of 25.3 kPa−1 across the full measuring range from 0 to 1000 kPa with a linear fitting coefficient R2 = 0.992. The loading response time and unloading recovery time of the device are 60 ms and 80 ms respectively, with a performance degradation of less than 3% after 1000 consecutive loading–unloading cycles, featuring low hysteresis error and excellent signal repeatability. Multi-scenario in vivo wearable tests on human subjects verify that the device can precisely capture subtle fluctuations of radial artery pulse and periodic laryngeal deformation during swallowing, distinguish characteristic waveform patterns of various English words according to differences in vocal cord vibration, and accurately detect bending motions when attached to finger joints. The entire fabrication process adopts common chemical raw materials and standard laboratory equipment without expensive micro-nano processing facilities, featuring convenient raw material procurement and high process fault tolerance, which enables large-area coating-based mass production. This work delivers a novel technical route for the low-cost large-scale production of high-performance ionic flexible sensors and bears significant industrialization reference value for applications in wearable medical monitoring, bionic robotic electronic skin, flexible human–machine interactive touch panels and other related fields. The conversion of bio-waste into functional energy materials provides a robust platform for addressing both environmental and energy challenges. In this paper, discarded absorbent pads are transformed into carbon-rich frameworks, which is followed by the fabrication of composites through the incorporation of Cu4SnS4 (CSS) for dual electrochemical applications. Integrating CSS into the waste-derived carbon matrix induces strong synergistic effects, improving electrical conductivity, increasing active-site availability, and accelerating charge-transfer kinetics. Comprehensive physicochemical analyses confirmed the successful formation of a well-integrated heterostructure composite with favorable structural and surface characteristics. Electrochemical evaluations further demonstrated that CSS-modified carbon exhibits superior bifunctional performance. In a two-electrode configuration, the composite delivers an energy density of 12.08 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 250 W kg−1 along with excellent cycling stability in supercapacitor applications. As an electrocatalyst, it achieves a low overpotential of 268 mV at −10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 75 mV dec−1, reflecting efficient reaction kinetics. The strong durability observed in both systems underscores the structural integrity and long-term operational stability of the material. Overall, this paper advances a sustainable waste-to-resource strategy for fabricating multifunctional carbon-based composites, offering a promising platform for integrated energy-storage and hydrogen-generation technologies. Flexible supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted considerable attention for wearable electronics, and developing high-performance electrolytes is critical for their practical application. While hydrogels have been widely investigated as solid electrolytes, studies on double-network (DN) hydrogel electrolytes specifically addressing the electrode–electrolyte interface stability under mechanical deformation remain relatively scarce. A major obstacle is maintaining a stable electrode–electrolyte interface under large mechanical deformation. Drawing inspiration from the mucus of a snail, which effectively adheres to various surfaces in challenging conditions, we present a self-healing xanthan gum/hydrophobically associated polyacrylamide/NaCl (XG/HPAAm/NaCl) hydrogel polymer electrolyte (HPE) that facilitates the creation of flexible SCs with improved mechanical and electrochemical properties. The optimized 2 wt% XG/HPAAm/0.4 M NaCl DN HPE exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 4.0 S/m, a tensile strength of 0.43 MPa, and an elongation at break of 11.7 mm/mm, along with a high adhesive energy of 254.7 J/m2. The tough HPE was coated with a mixed adhesive of 502 cyanoacrylate glue and triethyl citrate (TEC) to create a surface coating resembling “mucus”, onto which activated carbon (AC)-modified carbon cloth (CC) electrodes (CC/AC) were affixed on both sides to construct the flexible SCs. Investigations into the HPE’s characteristics and the SCs’ electrochemical performance at various bending angles reveal that the “mucus-coating” HPE exhibits strong electrode adhesion and significantly improved electrochemical performance. The assembled flexible SC delivers a high specific capacitance of 249.3 F/g at 0.30 A/g, retains 73.4% of its initial capacitance after 20,000 cycles, and maintains 86.9% capacitance retention under 180° bending, outperforming SCs assembled with original HPEs in both performance and stability. This approach provides a versatile method for improving the interfacial properties between electrodes and HPEs, paving the way for innovative applications in robust, self-healing, and flexible devices. Electrochemical chlorine production is of considerable industrial importance in areas such as water treatment, chemical manufacturing, and disinfection. However, conventional precious metal-based dimensionally stable anodes (DSAs), such as RuO2- and IrO2-based systems, are limited by high cost and resource constraints, motivating the development of low-cost alternative catalysts. In this study, Mn3O4 electrodes with controllable defect characteristics were fabricated by electrochemical deposition under various processing conditions. The effects of defect modulation and surface modification on the structural, electronic, and electrochemical properties of the electrodes were systematically evaluated. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that all deposited films retained a stable tetragonal Mn3O4 crystal structure, indicating that the deposition parameters primarily influenced defect states rather than the bulk phase. Mott–Schottky measurements revealed that the Mn3O4 electrodes exhibited p-type semiconducting behavior, with charge carrier densities on the order of 1014 cm−3, suggesting that oxygen vacancy-related defect states may contribute to the observed electronic properties of the electrodes. To further enhance anodic performance, Pt was introduced onto the Mn3O4 surface via sputtering, resulting in significantly improved charge transfer characteristics. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the best performing Pt/Mn3O4 electrodes delivered a current density exceeding 100 mA cm−2 at an applied potential of 1.5 V versus Ag/AgCl. More importantly, defect-enriched Pt/Mn3O4 electrodes exhibited markedly enhanced chlorine evolution activity, with the chlorine production rate increasing from approximately 14 µmol cm−2 to 29 µmol cm−2, corresponding to an enhancement of about 2.07-fold. Faradaic efficiency analysis further showed that sample (g) and sample (n) achieved chlorine evolution efficiencies of 59.2% and 74.6%, respectively, indicating a higher tendency toward chlorine evolution for the Pt-modified electrodes under the tested conditions. These findings suggest that the synergistic combination of defect engineering and surface modification effectively modulates the electronic structure of Mn3O4, providing a viable strategy for improving chlorine evolution performance. Hybrid nanomaterials that integrate surface functionality, colloidal stability, and efficient electron-transfer pathways are highly attractive for improving electrochemical sensing performance. Herein, we report the fabrication and evaluation of polyethyleneimine-functionalized gallium nitride nanoparticles (GaN) decorated with gold nanoparticles (GaN-PEI-Au) as a tunable electrode modifier for enhanced differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) detection of erythromycin. Branched polyethyleneimine was employed as a multifunctional interfacial layer to stabilize GaN dispersions, introduce amine-rich surface chemistry, and enable in situ gold nanoparticle formation at the GaN-PEI. The optimized GaN-PEI-Au material exhibited high colloidal stability, a characteristic Au localized surface plasmon resonance in the ~520–525 nm range, and well-defined Au nanoparticles attached to the GaN surface. When applied as an electrode coating, GaN-PEI-Au significantly enhanced the erythromycin oxidation response compared to bare Au and GaN-PEI interfaces, consistent with synergistic increases in electroactive surface area and interfacial charge-transfer efficiency. Under optimized DPV conditions, GaN-PEI-Au-modified electrodes enabled quantitative erythromycin determination with a linear range of 5 nM–2 µM (R2 = 0.990), sensitivity of 1.32 × 10−3 µA nM−1, and a limit of detection of 52.5 nM, while maintaining stable baseline behavior during repeated scans. The reported GaN-PEI-Au nanocomposites represent a robust platform for sensitive electrochemical detection of pharmaceutical compounds. Full article

This study presents the successful electrodeposition of polyaniline (PANI) and TiO2/PANI composites on boron-doped diamond (BDD) and fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates via cyclic voltammetry. Using 20 scan cycles in 0.5 M H2SO4, we synthesized thin films with tailored electrochemical properties. The formation of PANI was confirmed by characteristic redox peaks in the voltammograms, while FTIR spectroscopy identified key functional groups and bonding interactions between TiO2 and PANI. Morphological analysis via optical and scanning electron microscopy revealed uniform but cracked surfaces influenced by TiO2 loading. Composite electrodes with molar ratios of 2:1, 4:1, and 6:1 (TiO2:PANI) were compared, showing increased titanium content with higher ratios, as confirmed by EDS. This work offers a reproducible route for designing modified electrodes with enhanced interfacial properties. Full article

Conducting polymers are extensively researched due to their remarkable characteristics, including adaptable and tunable electrical conductivity, straightforward manufacturing process, enhanced mechanical strength, lightweight composition, affordability, and convenience in handling. Furthermore, they demonstrate outstanding chemical stability and elevated thermal conductivity. Conducting polymers can be easily modified with other substances to create composites with improved performance. They are easy to integrate with other materials, such as metal oxide, metal sulfide, and metal nitride. In the energy sector, especially concerning electrochemical energy storage systems such as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), conducting polymer composites with metal oxide, phosphate, and sulfide have shown considerable promise as electrode materials. These composites leverage synergistic effects that improve electrical conductivity, increase surface area, and prevent electrode pulverization, ultimately resulting in faster charge and discharge cycles, higher energy density, and enhanced cycling performance. This review offers a comprehensive examination of different types of conducting polymers used in LIB electrodes, provides hints regarding several synthesis methods for producing conducting polymer composites with metal oxide, phosphate, and sulfide, and discusses how the morphology of these composites influences their electrochemical performance. The current work examines the impact of isopropanol (IPA) on the electrochemical characteristics of nickel foam and Pd-modified Ni foam electrodes in a 0.1 M NaOH medium, with respect to the kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over the temperature range of 20–40 °C. Comparative HER/IPA examinations are presented for a highly catalytic polycrystalline Pt electrode. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and cathodic Tafel polarization experiments were carried out in this work, where the IPA concentrations ranged from 1.0 × 10−5 to 1.0 × 10−3 M. The introduction of small amounts of isopropyl alcohol into the working electrolyte noticeably facilitated the catalytic efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction on the surface of Ni foam electrodes. This is most likely related to the fact that IPA molecules undergo partial electrooxidation to acetone (qualitatively confirmed by GC-MS analysis) during initial CV cycling, which is believed to significantly diminish the surface tension phenomenon during the HER, thus promoting hydrogen bubble separation from the electrode surface. It should also be noted that acetone will continuously be produced at the Pt anode, making it essential to consider further migration of (CH3)2CO molecules to the working cell compartment. Most importantly, isopropanol was found not to undergo significant surface electrosorption on the nickel foam-based catalysts, which could otherwise significantly inhibit the hydrogen evolution reaction On the contrary, the presence of IPA in the electrolyte solution seems to have a detrimental effect on the kinetics of both the HER and the UPDH (underpotential deposition of H) processes on the surface of the polycrystalline Pt electrode, which is a superior electrochemical catalyst for HER, but highly susceptible to surface contamination. This study aims to develop an electrochemical sensor based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with Fe3O4 and graphene for the detection of myristicin as a characteristic compound in nutmeg plants. Electrode modification materials were prepared from a combination of graphene and magnetite, synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and further characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope–energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The two modifying materials were then optimized, and the optimum conditions were obtained at a w/w ratio of 1:2, which was applied to the GCE surface using the drop-casting technique. The electrochemical performance of the Fe3O4/graphene-modified electrode was evaluated under optimum experimental conditions using a Britton–Robinson buffer solution at pH 5. The scan-rate analysis of the electrode to evaluate its electrochemical performance showed an increase in surface area from 0.101 cm2 for the bare GCE to 0.534 cm2 for the GCE/Fe3O4–graphene. Electroanalytical performance was evaluated using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), which showed a linear response over the concentration range of 1–100 µM, with a limit of detection of 0.19 µM and a limit of quantitation of 0.58 µM. The developed electrode was applied successfully to detect myristicin in nutmeg seed extract samples, and its calculated concentrations were not significantly different from those obtained with the GC-MS method. These results suggest that the developed sensor may have further potential as an alternative detection tool for characterizing electroactive compounds in nutmeg plants. Full article

Dopamine (DA) is a critical catecholaminergic neurotransmitter that facilitates signal transduction across synaptic junctions and modulates essential neurophysiological processes, including motor coordination, motivational drive, and reward-motivated behaviors. The fabrication of cost-effective, miniaturized, and high-fidelity analytical platforms is imperative for real-time DA monitoring. Due to its inherent electrochemical activity, carbon-based amperometric sensors constitute the primary modality for DA quantification. In this study, graphite, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and graphene were immobilized within an ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate (ECA) polymer matrix. ECA was selected for its rapid polymerization kinetics and established biocompatibility in electrochemical frameworks. All fabricated composites demonstrated robust electrocatalytic activity toward DA; however, MWCNT- and graphene-based sensors exhibited superior analytical performance, characterized by highly competitive limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ). Specifically, MWCNT-modified electrodes achieved an interesting LOD of 0.030 ± 0.001 µM and an LOQ of 0.101 ± 0.008 µM. Discrepancies in baseline current amplitudes suggest that the spatial orientation of carbonaceous nanomaterials within the cyanoacrylate matrix significantly influences the electrochemical surface area and resulting baseline characteristics. The impact of interfering species commonly found in biological environments on the sensors’ response was systematically evaluated. The best-performing sensor, the graphene-based one, was used to measure the DA intracellular content of PC12 cells. Full article

In this paper, composite structures were fabricated by incorporating silver nanowires (AgNWs) with various metal oxides via the sol–gel method. This approach enhanced the electrical performance of AgNW-based transparent electrodes while simultaneously improving their stability under damp heat conditions and modifying the local medium environment surrounding the AgNW meshes. The randomly distributed AgNW meshes fabricated via drop-coating were treated with plasma to remove surface organic residues and reduce the inter-nanowire contact resistance. Subsequently, a zinc oxide (ZnO) coating was applied to further decrease the sheet resistance (Rsheet) value. The pristine AgNW mesh exhibits an Rsheet of 17.4 ohm/sq and an optical transmittance of 93.06% at a wavelength of 550 nm. After treatment, the composite structure achieves a reduced Rsheet of 8.7 ohm/sq while maintaining a high optical transmittance of 92.20%. The use of AgNW meshes as window electrodes enhances electron injection efficiency and facilitates the coupling mechanism between localized surface plasmon resonances and excitons. Compared with conventional ITO transparent electrodes, the incorporation of the AgNW mesh leads to a 17-fold enhancement in ZnO emission intensity under identical injection current conditions. Moreover, the unique scattering characteristics of the AgNW and metal oxide composite structure effectively reduce photon reflection at the device interface, thereby broadening the angular distribution of emitted light in electroluminescent devices. Metal materials are widely used in power grid infrastructure, but they are prone to metal corrosion due to long-term exposure to various environmental conditions, resulting in significant losses. The existing superhydrophobic coatings have good anti-corrosion performance, but poor wear resistance. Therefore, it is extremely important to improve the wear resistance of superhydrophobic coatings. In this study, a kind of fluorine-modified SiO2 particle was prepared with pentafluorooctyltrimethoxysilane (FAS-13) as the low surface energy modifier, following the fabrication of a superhydrophobic coating on metal substrate via a PDMS-doped spray deposition method to reinforcement wear resistance property. XPS, FT-IR and Raman spectra confirmed the successful introduction of FAS-13 on SiO2 particles, as evidenced by the characteristic fluorine-related peaks. TGA revealed that the fluorine modified SiO2 (F-SiO2) particles exhibited excellent thermal stability, with an initial decomposition temperature of 354 °C. From the perspective of surface morphology, the relevant data indicated a peak-to-valley height difference of only 88.7 nm, with Rq of 11.9 nm and Ra of 8.86 nm. And it also exhibited outstanding superhydrophobic property with contact angle (CA) of 164.44°/159.48°, demonstrating remarkable self-cleaning performance. And it still maintained CA of over 150° even after cyclic abrasion of 3000 cm with 800 grit sandpaper under a 100 g load, showing exceptional wear resistance. In addition, it was revealed that the coated electrode retained a high impedance value of 8.53 × 108 Ω·cm2 at 0.1 Hz after 480 h of immersion in 5 wt% NaCl solution, with the CPE exponent remaining close to unity (from 1.00 to 0.97), highlighting its superior anti-corrosion performance and broad application prospects for metal corrosion prevention. Study presents a comparative analytical investigation into the green synthesis of monometallic and bimetallic nanoparticles using Punica granatum (pomegranate) extract, aimed at developing high-performance electrochemical sensors for the detection of ciprofloxacin (CIP) as a representative pharmaceutical pollutant. Three nanoparticle systems were successfully synthesized: monometallic Au@NPs and TiO2@NPs, as well as the bimetallic AuTiO2@NPs. Their structural and physicochemical characteristics were comprehensively analyzed using UV–Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and XRD techniques. The obtained nanoparticles exhibited predominantly spherical morphologies with average particle sizes of approximately 40 ± 5 nm for Au@NPs, 50 ± 7 nm for TiO2@NPs, and 60 ± 6 nm for AuTiO2@NPs. These nanomaterials were subsequently employed to modify electrode surfaces for electrochemical sensing applications. Their analytical performance was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square-wave voltammetry (SWV). The sensors displayed excellent sensitivity, with limits of detection of 0.8 ppb for TiO2@NPs, 0.8 ppb for Au@NPs, and 0.2 ppb for the AuTiO2@NP-based sensor. The bimetallic platform demonstrated superior electrochemical behavior, enhanced signal intensity, and strong selectivity, achieving recovery rates of 98% in tap water and 103% in wastewater. Overall, the results confirm the effectiveness of green-synthesized bimetallic nanoparticles as efficient, low-cost materials for environmental monitoring of emerging pharmaceutical contaminants.
