Natural gas storage is an effective solution to address the energy supply–demand imbalance, and underground gas storage (UGS) is a primary method for storing natural gas. The overarching goal of this study is to monitor and analyze surface deformation at the Hutubi underground gas storage facility in Xinjiang, China, which is the largest gas storage facility in the country. This research aims to ensure the stable and efficient operation of the facility through long-term monitoring, using remote sensing data and advanced modeling techniques. The study employs the SBAS-InSAR method, leveraging Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from the TerraSAR and Sentinel-1 sensors to observe displacement time series from 2013 to 2024. The data is processed through wavelet transformation for denoising, followed by the application of a Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm combined with Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) to decompose both surface deformation and gas pressure data. The key focus is the development of a high-precision predictive model using a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) network, referred to as GWO-VMD-GRU, to accurately predict surface deformation. The results show periodic surface uplift and subsidence at the facility, with a notable net uplift. During the period from August 2013 to March 2015, the maximum uplift rate was 6 mm/year, while from January 2015 to December 2024, it increased to 12 mm/year. The surface deformation correlates with gas injection and extraction periods, indicating periodic variations. The accuracy of the InSAR-derived displacement data is validated through high-precision GNSS data. The GWO-VMD-GRU model demonstrates strong predictive performance with a coefficient of determination (R2) greater than 0.98 for the gas well test points. This study provides a valuable reference for the future safe operation and management of underground gas storage facilities, demonstrating significant contributions to both scientific understanding and practical applications in underground gas storage management. This study suggests a hybrid approach that combines improved feature selection and intelligent diagnosis to increase the operational safety and intelligent diagnosis capabilities of hydropower units. In order to handle the vibration data, complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) is used initially. A novel comprehensive index is constructed by combining the Pearson correlation coefficient, mutual information (MI), and Kullback–Leibler divergence (KLD) to select intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Next, feature extraction is performed on the selected IMFs using Refined Composite Multiscale Fluctuation Dispersion Entropy (RCMFDE). Then, time and frequency domain features are screened by calculating dispersion and combined with IMF features to build a hybrid feature vector. The vector is then fed into a CNN-GRU-Attention model for intelligent diagnosis. The improved slime mold algorithm (ISMA) is employed for the first time to optimize the hyperparameters of the CNN-GRU-Attention model. The experimental results show that the classification accuracy reaches 96.79% for raw signals and 93.33% for noisy signals, significantly outperforming traditional methods. This study incorporates entropy-based feature extraction, combines hyperparameter optimization with the classification model, and addresses the limitations of single feature selection methods for non-stationary and nonlinear signals. The proposed approach provides an excellent solution for intelligent optimized diagnosis of hydropower units. Full article

CO2-biomethanation was studied in the present manuscript by considering the direct injection of hydrogen into a conventional anaerobic digester treating sewage sludge within a simulated wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The plant was simulated using the Python 3.12.4 software, and a Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to account for the high variability in the organic content of the wastewater and the methane potential of the sludge. Two modes of operation were studied. The first mode involves the use of an anaerobic digester to upgrade biogas, and the second mode considers using the digester as a CO2 utilization unit, transforming captured CO2. Upgrading biogas and utilizing the extra methane to generate electricity within the same plant leads to a negative economic balance (first scenario). A hydrogen injection of 1 L of H2/Lr d (volumetric H2 injection per liter of reactor per day) was required to transform the CO2 present in the biogas into methane. The benefits associated with this approach resulted in lower savings regarding heat recovery from the electrolyzer, increased electricity production, and an additional oxygen supply for the waste-activated sludge treatment system. Increasing the injection rate to values of 5 and 30 L of H2/Lr d was also studied by considering the operation of the digester under thermophilic conditions. The latter assumptions benefited from the better economy of scale associated with larger installations. They allowed for enough savings to be obtained in terms of the fuel demand for sludge drying, in addition to the previous categories analyzed in the biogas upgrading case. However, the current electricity price makes the proposal unfeasible unless a lower price is set for hydrogen generation. A standard electricity price of 7.6 c€/kWh was assumed for the analysis, but the specific operation of producing hydrogen required a price below 3.0 c€/kWh to achieve profitability. Full article

Advances in Industry 4.0 and the emergence of Industry 5.0 are driving the development of intelligent, sustainable manufacturing systems, where embedded sensing and real-time health diagnostics play a critical role. However, implementing robust predictive maintenance in production environments remains challenging due to the variability in machine operations and the lack of access to internal control data. This paper introduces a lightweight, embedded-compatible framework for health status signature extraction based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD), leveraging only data from a single triaxial accelerometer. The core of the proposed method is a cycle-synchronized segmentation strategy that uses accelerometer-derived velocity profiles and cross-correlation to align signals with machining cycles, eliminating the need for controller or encoder access. This ensures process-aware decomposition that preserves the operational context across diverse and dynamic machining conditions to address the inadequate segmentation of unstable process data that often fails to capture the full scope of the process, resulting in misinterpretation. The performance is evaluated on a challenging real-world manufacturing benchmark where the extracted intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) are analyzed in the frequency domain, including quantitative evaluation. As results show, the proposed method shows its effectiveness in detecting subtle degradations, following a low computational footprint, and its suitability for deployment in embedded predictive maintenance systems on brownfield or controller-limited machinery. With the increasing penetration of renewables, the importance of electrical energy storage (EES) for power supply stabilization is growing. The intermittency of renewable energy sources remains the main issue limiting their rapid integration; however, the development of high-capacity batteries capable of storing large quantities of energy offers a way to address this challenge. This article presents and describes dedicated algorithms for controlling the EES system to enable the provision of individual system services. Five services are planned for implementation: RES power stabilization; voltage regulation using active and reactive power; reactive power compensation; power stabilization of unstable loads; and power reduction on demand. The aim of this paper is to develop new, dedicated energy storage control algorithms for delivering these specific services. Additionally, the voltage regulation algorithm includes two operating modes: short-term regulation (voltage fluctuation stabilization) and long-term regulation (triggered by an operator signal). This paper presents an online efficiency optimization strategy for a six-phase induction generator (6PIG) operating in both healthy and faulty modes for micro-hydropower applications. The proposed method is based on an extended Loss Model Control (LMC) approach, in which the direct axis stator current Id is dynamically optimized in real time to minimize the total electrical losses. Unlike conventional LMC strategies, this method explicitly incorporates switching losses into the loss model, along with stator and rotor copper losses and iron losses. The optimization problem is solved using a numerical minimization routine, allowing the control system to adapt continuously to variations in torque requests. The proposed approach is validated under both healthy and faulty configurations of the 6PIG. It is implemented and tested through simulation in MATLAB/Simulink® and experimentally validated on a 24 kW squirrel cage six-phase induction generator (SC6PIG). The results are compared in terms of power losses, energy saving, and efficiency. Full article

Against the backdrop of the increasing penetration rate of new energy year by year, power systems face a continuously growing demand for flexibility. Under the structure of such a new power system, it is essential not only to introduce diverse flexible power sources but also to explore the flexible regulation capabilities of existing conventional power sources. To fully utilize the flexibility of thermal power units (TPUs), this study proposes a real-time optimal scheduling strategy for a wind–thermal energy-storage integrated system with an adaptive time division and variable objectives. Based on the evaluation results of the real-time flexible supply–demand relationship within a regional power grid, the operation modes of TPUs are categorized into three types: economic mode, peak shaving mode, and coordination mode. For each operation mode, corresponding optimization objectives are defined, and an energy storage control strategy is developed to assist in the peak shaving of TPUs. While effectively harnessing the flexibility of TPUs, the proposed method reduces both the frequency and capacity of TPUs entering deep peak shaving. Using data from a province in Northwest China as a case study, simulation calculations and analyses demonstrate that the proposed method increases renewable energy consumption by 314.37 MWh while decreasing system economic benefits by CNY 129,000. Compared with traditional scheduling methods for TPUs to accommodate renewable energy, the system benefit increases by CNY 297,000, and an additional 13.53 MWh of peak wind power is accommodated. These results confirm that the proposed scheduling strategy can significantly enhance the system’s ability to integrate new energy while maintaining its economic efficiency. Full article

Maximizing the power output of wind farms is critical for improving the economic viability and grid integration of renewable energy. Active wake control (AWC) strategies, such as yaw-based wake steering, offer significant potential for power generation increase but require predictive models that are both accurate and computationally efficient for real-time implementation. This paper proposes a data-driven observer to rapidly estimate the potential power gain achievable through AWC as a function of the ambient wind direction. The approach is rooted in Koopman operator theory, which allows a linear representation of nonlinear dynamics. Specifically, a model is developed using an Input–Output Extended Dynamic Mode Decomposition framework combined with Sparse Identification (IOEDMDSINDy). This method lifts the low-dimensional wind direction input into a high-dimensional space of observable functions and then employs iterative sparse regression to identify a minimal, interpretable linear model in this lifted space. By training on offline simulation data, the resulting observer serves as an ultra-fast surrogate model, capable of providing instantaneous predictions to inform online control decisions. The methodology is demonstrated and its performance is validated using two case studies: a 9-turbine and a 20-turbine wind farm. The results show that the observer accurately captures the complex, nonlinear relationship between wind direction and power gain, significantly outperforming simpler models. This work provides a key enabling technology for advanced, real-time wind farm control systems. Full article

Modern energy storage systems for both power and transportation are highly related to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their safety depends on a potentially hazardous failure mode known as thermal runaway (TR). Predicting and classifying TR causes can widely enhance the safety of power and transportation systems. This paper presents an advanced machine learning method for forecasting and classifying the causes of TR. A generative model for synthetic data generation was used to handle class imbalance in the dataset. Hyperparameter optimization was conducted using Optuna for four classifiers: Support Vector Machine (SVM), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), tabular network (TabNet), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). A three-fold cross-validation approach was used to guarantee a robust evaluation. An open-source database of LIB failure events is used for model training and testing. The XGBoost model outperforms the other models across all TR categories by achieving 100% accuracy and a high recall (1.00). Model results were interpreted using SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis to investigate the most significant factors in TR predictors. The findings show that important TR indicators include energy adjusted for heat and weight loss, heater power, average cell temperature upon activation, and heater duration. These findings guide the design of safer battery systems and preventive monitoring systems for real applications. They can help experts develop more efficient battery management systems, thereby improving the performance and longevity of battery-operated devices. By enhancing the predictive knowledge of temperature-driven failure mechanisms in LIBs, the study directly advances thermal analysis and energy storage safety domains. Full article

In recent years, pneumatic stages have attracted attention as stages for semiconductor manufacturing equipment due to their low cost and minimal maintenance requirements. However, pneumatic stages include nonlinear elements such as friction and air compressibility, making precise control challenging. To address this issue, this paper aims to achieve high-precision positioning by applying a nonlinear position control method to pneumatic stages. To achieve this, we propose a control method that combines filtered right coprime factorization and Prescribed Performance Control–Sliding Mode Control (PPC-SMC). Filtered right coprime factorization not only stabilizes and simplifies the plant but also reduces noise. Furthermore, PPC-SMC enables safer and faster control by constraining the system state within a switching surface that imposes limits on the error range. Through experiments on the actual system, it was confirmed that the proposed method achieves dramatically higher precision and faster tracking compared to conventional methods. Full article

When planning distributed intelligent power distribution networks, it is necessary to take into account the interests of various distributed generation (DG) operators and power supply enterprises, thereby diversifying and complicating planning models. Additionally, the integration of a high proportion of distributed resources has triggered a transformation in the power flow pattern of active distribution networks, shifting from the traditional unidirectional flow mode to a bidirectional interactive mode. The intermittent and fluctuating operation modes of distributed photovoltaic and wind power generation have also increased the difficulty of distribution network planning. To address the aforementioned challenges, this paper proposes an active distribution network planning strategy that considers the allocation of diverse flexible resources, exploring scheduling flexibility from both the power supply side and the load side. Firstly, a bi-level optimization model integrating planning and operation is constructed, where the upper-level model determines the optimal capacity of investment and construction equipment, and the lower-level model formulates an economic dispatching scheme. Through iterative solving of the upper and lower levels, the final planning strategy is determined. Meanwhile, to reduce the complexity of problem-solving, this paper employs an improved PSO-CS hybrid algorithm for iterative optimization. Finally, the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated through validation using an improved IEEE-33-bus test system. Compared with conventional algorithms, the convergence speed of the method proposed in this paper can be improved by up to 21.4%, and the total investment cost can be reduced by up to 3.26%. Cross-line operation and express–local train coordination are both crucial for enhancing the efficiency of multi-level urban rail transit systems. Most studies address suburban railway operations in isolation, overlooking coordination and inducing supply–demand mismatches that weaken system efficiency. This study addresses the joint optimization of cross-line operation and express–local scheduling by proposing a novel train timetable model. The model determines train service plans and departure times to minimize total system cost, including train operating and passenger travel costs. A space–time network represents integrated train–passenger interactions, and an extended adaptive large neighborhood search (E-ALNS) algorithm is developed to solve the model efficiently. Numerical experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The E-ALNS achieves near-optimal solutions with less than 4% deviation from Gurobi. Comparative analysis shows that the proposed hybrid operation mode reduces total passenger travel cost by 6% and improves the cost efficiency ratio by 13% compared to independent operations. Sensitivity analyses further confirm the model’s robustness to variations in transfer walking time, passenger penalties, and waiting thresholds. This study provides a practical and scalable framework for optimizing train timetables in complex cross-line transit systems, offering insights for enhancing system coordination and passenger service quality. We demonstrate an all-fiber, high-sensitivity, dual-parameter sensor for humidity and temperature. The sensor consists of a symmetrical, non-adiabatic, tapered, single-mode optical fiber, operating at the wavelength near the dispersion turning point, and a cascaded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) for temperature compensation. At one end of the fiber’s tapered region, part of the fundamental mode is coupled to a higher-order mode, and vice versa at the other end. Under the circumstances that the two modes have the same group index, the transmission spectrum would show an interference fringe with uneven dips. In the tapered region of the sensor, some of the light transmits to the air, so it is sensitive to changes in the refractive index caused by the ambient humidity. In the absence of moisture-sensitive materials, the humidity sensitivity of our sensor sample can reach −286 pm/%RH. In order to address the temperature and humidity crosstalk and achieve a dual-parameter measurement, we cascaded a humidity-insensitive FBG. In addition, the sensor has a good humidity stability and a response time of 0.26 s, which shows its potential in fields such as medical respiratory dynamic monitoring. Full article

The widespread integration of power electronic devices and renewable energy sources into power systems has significantly exacerbated voltage and current waveform distortion issues, where asymmetric loads—including single-phase nonlinear equipment and unbalanced three-phase power electronic installations—serve as critical harmonic sources whose inherent nonlinear and asymmetric characteristics increasingly compromise power quality. To enhance power quality management, this paper proposes a universal harmonic source modeling and operational state identification methodology integrating physical mechanisms with data-driven algorithms. The approach establishes an RL-series equivalent impedance model as its physical foundation, employing singular value decomposition and Z-score criteria to accurately characterize asymmetric load dynamics; subsequently applies Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) to extract time-frequency features from equivalent impedance parameters while utilizing Density-Based Spatial Clustering (DBSCAN) for the high-precision identification of operational states in asymmetric loads; and ultimately constructs state-specific harmonic source models by partitioning historical datasets into subsets, substantially improving model generalizability. Simulation and experimental validations demonstrate that the synergistic integration of physical impedance modeling and machine learning methods precisely captures dynamic harmonic characteristics of asymmetric loads, significantly enhancing modeling accuracy, dynamic robustness, and engineering practicality to provide an effective assessment framework for power quality issues caused by harmonic source integration in distribution networks. In this work, we propose a geolocation framework for distant ground targets integrating laser rangefinder sensors with multimodal visual servo control. By simulating binocular visual servo measurements through monocular visual servo tracking at fixed time intervals, our approach requires only single-session sensor attitude correction calibration to accurately geolocalize multiple targets during a single flight, which significantly enhances operational efficiency in multi-target geolocation scenarios. We design a step-convergent target geolocation optimization algorithm. By adjusting the step size and the scale factor of the cost function, we achieve fast accuracy convergence for different UAV reconnaissance modes, while maintaining the geolocation accuracy without divergence even when the laser ranging sensor is turned off for a short period. The experimental results show that through the UAV’s continuous reconnaissance measurements, the geolocalization error of remote ground targets based on our algorithm is less than 7 m for 3000 m, and less than 3.5 m for 1500 m. We have realized the fast and high-precision geolocalization of remote targets on the ground under the high-altitude reconnaissance of UAVs. Full article
