Oral mucositis (OM) is a severe inflammatory condition of the oral mucosa that is commonly associated with cancer therapies. Traditional treatments typically have limited efficacy and significant side effects, necessitating alternative approaches. Nanobased drug delivery systems (DDSs) present promising solutions, enhancing therapeutic outcomes while minimizing side effects. This review aims to evaluate the use of nanobased DDSs to treat OM. To reach these aims, an extensive literature review was conducted using the following databases: BVS, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The search strategy included the keywords “microparticles,” “nanoparticles,” “drug delivery system,” “oral mucositis,” “therapy,” and “treatment,” combined with the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR.” After applying filters for language, relevance, full-text availability, exclusion of review articles, and removal of duplicates, a total of 32 articles were selected for analysis. Of the 32 studies included in this review, 25 employed polymeric micro- or nanosystems for the treatment of OM. Regarding the stage of investigation, 10 studies were conducted in vitro, 16 were conducted in vivo, and 6 corresponded to clinical trials. Compared with conventional drug delivery approaches, most of these studies reported improved therapeutic outcomes. These findings highlight the potential of nanosystems as innovative strategies for enhancing OM treatment. Nonetheless, challenges in large-scale manufacturing, including reproducibility and safety, and the limited number of clinical trials warrant careful consideration. Future research with larger clinical trials is essential to validate these findings and effectively guide clinical practice. Full article

Millisecond lasers, with their high processing efficiency and large power, are widely used in manufacturing fields such as aerospace. This study aims to investigate the effects of different processing parameters on the micro-hole processing of 316 heat-resistant steel using millisecond lasers. Through the control variable method, the study examines the impact of pulse energy, pulse count, and pulse width on the quality of micro-holes, including the entrance diameter, exit diameter, and taper. Furthermore, combined with orthogonal experiments and COMSOL Multiphysics 6.2 simulations, the study explores the influence of pulse width on the formation of blind holes. The experimental results show that when the pulse energy is 2.2 J, the taper is minimal (2.2°), while the taper reaches its peak (2.4°) at 2.4 J pulse energy. As the pulse count increases to 55–60 pulses, the exit diameter stabilizes, and the taper decreases to 1.8°. Blind holes begin to form when the pulse width exceeds 1.2 ms. When the pulse width is 1.2 ms, pulse energy is 2.4 J, and pulse count is 50, the entrance diameter of the blind hole reaches its maximum, indicating that longer pulse widths result in more significant energy reflection and thermal accumulation effects. COMSOL simulations reveal that high-energy pulses cause intense melt ejection, while longer pulse widths exacerbate thermal accumulation at the micro-hole entrance, leading to blind hole formation. This study provides important process references for laser processing of through-holes and blind holes in heat-resistant steel. Full article

Background. Physicomechanical properties and clinical service of bulk-fill composites depend on their adequate polymerization and depth of cure. Some manufacturers claim that these composites can be adequately cured when used in bulks exceeding 4 mm. Objective. The aim of this study was to compare Vickers microhardness (VMH) and depth of cure (DOC) of six contemporary bulk-fill resin composites at depths of 4 mm and 6 mm. Material and methods. Six bulk-fill composites were evaluated in this study: 1. Tetric EvoCeram Bulk (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), (TEC); 2. Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior (3M ESPE Dental Products Division, St. Paul, MN, USA), (FBF); 3. Filtek One Bulk Fill (3M ESPE Dental Products Division, St. Paul, MN, USA, (FOB); 4. SonicFill 2 (Kerr, Orange, CA, USA), (SF2); 5. Admira Fusion X-tra (Voco, GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany), (AFX); 6. GrandioSO X-tra (Voco, GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany), (GSX). The 18 specimens (3 of each composite) were prepared in split Teflon moulds of 4 mm diameter and 6 mm thickness. All composites were cured in standard mode for 20 s using LED LCU (D-Light Duo, RF-Pharmaceuticals Sarl, Geneva, Switzerland; 1200–1300 mW/cm). The VMH was measured using a digital Micro Hardness Tester Shimadzu (HMV-2T E, Shimadzu Corporation, Kyoto, Japan). A 50 g (0.5 N) load force was applied for 30 s. Each specimen was measured at five places selected by chance at each level (N = 15). The hardness ratio or DOC was calculated for all samples as the ratio of bottom and surface microhardness at levels of 4 and 6 mm. Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test. Results. Significant reduction in VMH was observed for all tested materials when comparing top surface and bottom (p < 0.01). The highest VMH was obtained for GSX and AFX, and the lowest for TEC. The results show that the degree of polymerization was adequate for all tested materials at a depth of 6 mm, since the hardness ratio exceeded 0.80 in all cases. The hardness ratio at 4 mm was high for all tested composites ranging from 0.91 for TEC to 0.98 for GSX. All composites showed adequate DOC at the bottom of the 6 mm bulk samples. However, the hardness ratio was the highest for Admira Fusion X-tra (0.96) and GrandioSO X-tra (0.97). Conclusions. All tested materials showed a significant decrease in microhardness from the top surface to the bottom. The DOC was adequate for all bulk-fill composites at a depth of 6 mm cured under standard mode for 20 s. All bulk-fill resin composites evaluated in this study can be used in bulk, up to 6 mm. Titanium–aluminum–vanadium (Ti6Al4V) is a material chosen for spine, orthopedic, and dental implants due to its combination of desirable mechanical and biological properties. Lasers have been used to modify metal surfaces, enabling the generation of a surface on Ti6Al4V with distinct micro- and nano-scale structures. Studies indicate that topography with micro/nano features of osteoclast resorption pits causes bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) and osteoprogenitor cells to favor differentiation into an osteoblastic phenotype. This study examined whether the biological response of human MSCs to Ti6Al4V surfaces is sensitive to laser treatment-controlled micro/nano-topography. First, 15 mm diameter Ti6Al4V discs (Spine Wave Inc., Shelton, CT, USA) were either machined (M) or additively manufactured (AM). Surface treatments included no laser treatment (NT), nanosecond laser (Ns), femtosecond laser (Fs), or nanosecond followed by femtosecond laser (Ns+Fs). Surface wettability, roughness, and surface chemistry were determined using sessile drop contact angle, laser confocal microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Human MSCs were cultured in growth media on tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS) or test surfaces. On day 7, the levels of osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN), osteoprotegerin (OPG), and vascular endothelial growth factor 165 (VEGF) in the conditioned media were measured. M NT, Fs, and Ns+Fs surfaces were hydrophilic; Ns was hydrophobic. AM NT and Fs surfaces were hydrophilic; AM Ns and Ns+Fs were hydrophobic. Roughness (Sa and Sz) increased after Ns and Ns+Fs treatment for both M and AM disks. All surfaces primarily consisted of oxygen, titanium, and carbon; Fs had increased levels of aluminum for both M and AM. SEM images showed that M NT discs had a smooth surface, whereas AM surfaces appeared rough at a higher magnification. Fs surfaces had a similar morphology to their respective NT disc at low magnification, but higher magnification revealed nano-scale bumps not seen on NT surfaces. AM Fs surfaces also had regular interval ridges that were not seen on non-femto laser-ablated surfaces. Surface roughness was increased on M and AM Ns and Ns+Fs disks compared to NT and Fs disks. OCN was enhanced, and DNA was reduced on Ns and Ns+Fs, with no difference between them. OPN, OPG, and VEGF levels for laser-treated M surfaces were unchanged compared to NT, apart from an increase in OPG on Fs. MSCs grown on AM Ns and Ns+Fs surfaces had increased levels of OCN per DNA. These results indicate that MSCs cultured on AM Ns and AM Ns+Fs surfaces, which exhibited unique roughness at the microscale and nanoscale, had enhanced differentiation to an osteoblastic phenotype. The laser treatments of the surface mediated this enhancement of MSC differentiation and warrant further clinical investigation. Full article

Accurate micro gas flow measurement is critical for medical ventilator calibration, environmental gas monitoring, and semiconductor manufacturing. Laminar flowmeters are widely employed in micro gas flow measurement applications owing to their inherent advantages of high linearity, the absence of moving components, and a broad measurement range. Nevertheless, due to the low measurement accuracy under micro gas flow caused by nonlinear errors and a relatively complex structure, traditional laminar flow measurement devices exhibit limitations in micro gas flow measurement scenarios. This study proposes a novel micro gas flow measurement method based on a single capillary laminar flow element, which simplifies the structure and enhances applicability in the field of micro gas flow. Through structural optimization with precise control of the capillary length–diameter ratios and theoretical error correction based on computational analysis, nonlinear errors were effectively reduced while improving the measurement accuracy in the field of micro gas flow. The proposed methodology was systematically validated through computational fluid dynamics simulations (ANSYS Fluent 2021 R1) and experimental investigations using a dedicated test platform. The experimental results show that the relative error of the measurement system within the full measurement range is less than ±0.6% (1–10 cm3/min; cm3/min means cubic centimeter per minute), and its accuracy is superior to 1% of reading (1% Rd) or 1.5% of reading (1.5% Rd) of conventional laminar flowmeters. The fitting curve of the flow rate versus the pressure difference derived from the measurement results maintains an excellent linear correlation (R2 > 0.99), thus confirming that this method has practical application value in the field of micro gas flow measurement. The object of this study is welded joints of AISI 321 and Ti-6Al-4V, obtained by diffusion welding on developed conical surfaces. The problem of creating bimetallic joints of AISI 321 and Ti-6Al-4V with developed conical contact surfaces, using diffusion welding through an intermediate Electrolytic Tough Pitch Copper (Cu-ETP) copper layer, was solved. The joints were studied using micro-X-ray spectral analysis, microstructural analysis, and mechanical tests. High mutual diffusion of copper and titanium, along with increased concentrations of Cr and V in copper, was detected. The shear strength of the obtained welded joints is 250 MPa and 235 MPa at 30 min and 15 min, respectively, which is higher than the copper layer’s strength (180 MPa). The obtained results are explained by the dislocation diffusion mechanism in the volume of grains and beyond, due to thermal deformations during welding. Under operating conditions of internal pressure and cryogenic temperatures, the strength of the connection is ensured by the entire two-layer structure, and tightness is ensured by a vacuum-tight diffusion connection. The obtained strength of the connection (250 MPa) is sufficient under the specified operating conditions. Analysis of existing solutions in the literature review indicates that industrial application of technology for manufacturing bimetallic adapters from AISI 321 stainless steel and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy is limited to butt joints with small geometric dimensions. Studies of the transition zone structure and diffusion processes in bimetallic joints with developed conical contact surfaces enabled determination of factors affecting joint structure and diffusion coefficients. The obtained bimetallic adapters, made of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and AISI 321 stainless steel, can be used to connect titanium high-pressure vessels with stainless steel pipelines. Full article

The escalating climate crisis and global disruptions have prompted a critical re-evaluation of operations management within manufacturing and supply systems. This conceptual article addresses the theoretical and strategic gap in aligning resilience and sustainability by proposing an Integrated Sustainable Operational Strategy (ISOS) framework. Drawing on systems theory, circular economy principles, and sustainability science, the framework synthesizes multiple operational domains—circularity, localization, digital adaptation, and workforce flexibility—across macro (policy), meso (organizational), and micro (process) levels. This study constructs a conceptual model that explains the interdependencies and trade-offs among strategic operational responses in the Anthropocene era. Supported by multi-level logic and a synthesis of domain constructs, the model provides a foundation for empirical investigation and strategic planning. Key propositions for future research are developed, focusing on causal relationships and boundary conditions. The novelty of ISOS lies in its simultaneous integration of three strategic pillars—circularity, localization, and digital resilience—within a unified, multi-scalar architecture that bridges fragmented operational theories. The article advances theory by redefining operational excellence through regenerative logic and adaptive capacity, responding directly to SDG 9 (industry innovation), SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), and SDG 13 (climate action). This integrative framework offers both theoretical insight and practical guidance for transforming operations into catalysts of sustainable transition. Full article

As manufacturing demands for challenging-to-machine metallic materials continue to evolve, the performance of cutting tools has emerged as a critical limiting factor. The synergistic application of micro-texture and coating in cutting tools can improve various properties. For the processing of existing micro-texture, because of the fast cooling and heating processing method of laser, there are defects such as remelted layer stacking and micro-cracks on the surface after processing. This study introduces a preheating-assisted technology aimed at optimizing the milling performance of textured coated tools. A milling test platform was established to evaluate the performance of these tools on titanium alloys under thermally assisted conditions. The face-centered cubic response surface methodology, as part of the central composite design (CCD) experimental framework, was employed to investigate the interaction effects of micro-texture preparation parameters and thermal assistance temperature on milling performance. The findings indicate a significant correlation between thermal assistance temperature and tool milling performance, suggesting that an appropriately selected thermal assistance temperature can enhance both the milling efficiency of the tool and the surface quality of the titanium alloy. Utilizing the response surface methodology, a multi-objective optimization of the textured coating tool-preparation process was conducted, resulting in the following optimized parameters: laser power of 45 W, scanning speed of 1576 mm/s, the number of scans was 7, micro-texture spacing of 130 μm, micro-texture diameter of 30 μm, and a heat-assisted temperature of 675.15 K. Finally, the experimental platform of optimization results is built, which proves that the optimization results are accurate and reliable, and provides theoretical basis and technical support for the preparation process of textured coating tools. It is of great significance to realize high-precision and high-quality machining of difficult-to-machine materials such as titanium alloy. Full article

Acoustic tweezers, as advanced micro/nano manipulation tools, play a pivotal role in biomedical engineering, microfluidics, and precision manufacturing. However, piezoelectric-based acoustic tweezers face performance limitations due to multi-physical coupling effects during microfabrication. This study proposes a novel approach using injection molding with embedded electronics (IMEs) technology to fabricate piezoelectric micro-ultrasonic transducers with micron-scale precision, addressing the critical issue of acoustic node displacement caused by thermal–mechanical coupling in injection molding—a problem that impairs wave transmission efficiency and operational stability. To optimize the IME process parameters, a hybrid multi-objective optimization framework integrating NSGA-II and MOPSO is developed, aiming to simultaneously minimize acoustic node displacement, volumetric shrinkage, and residual stress distribution. Key process variables—packing pressure (80–120 MPa), melt temperature (230–280 °C), and packing time (15–30 s)—are analyzed via finite element modeling (FEM) and validated through in situ tie bar elongation measurements. The results show a 27.3% reduction in node displacement amplitude and a 19.6% improvement in wave transmission uniformity compared to conventional methods. This methodology enhances acoustic tweezers’ operational stability and provides a generalizable framework for multi-physics optimization in MEMS manufacturing, laying a foundation for next-generation applications in single-cell manipulation, lab-on-a-chip systems, and nanomaterial assembly. Currently, the shear-extrusion behavior of solid propellants (SPs), which comprise a significant volume fraction of micro-/nanoscale solid particles (e.g., octogen/HMX), nitroglycerin as a plasticizer/solvent, nitrocellulose as a binder, and other functional additives, is still insufficiently understood. While the rheology of highly filled polymers has been extensively documented, the rheological behavior of SPs within the practical processing temperature range of 80–95 °C remains poorly understood. This study investigated, in particular, the pressure dependence of the viscosity of SPs melts during steady-state shear flow. Steady-state shear measurements were conducted using a twin-bore capillary rheometer with capillary dies of varying diameters and lengths to explore the viscosity dependence of SPs. The results reveal that interface defects between octogen particles and the polymer matrix generate a melt pressure range of 3–30 MPa in the long capillary die, underscoring the non-negligible impact of pressure on the measured viscosity (η). At constant temperature and shear rate, the measured viscosity of SPs exhibits strong pressure dependence, showing notable deviations in pressure sensitivity (β), which was found to be greatly relevant to the contents of solvent and solid particles. Such discrepancies are attributed to the compressibility of particle–particle and particle–polymer networks during capillary flow. The findings emphasize the critical role of pressure effect on the rheological properties of SPs, which is essential for optimizing manufacturing processes and ensuring consistent propellant performance. Silicon carbide (SiC) half-bridge power modules are widely utilized in new energy power generation, electric vehicles, and industrial power supplies. To address the research gap in collaborative validation between electro-thermal coupling models and process reliability, this paper proposes a closed-loop methodology of “design-simulation-process-validation”. This approach integrates in-depth electro-thermal simulation (LTspice XVII/COMSOL Multiphysics 6.3) with micro/nano-packaging processes (sintering/bonding). Firstly, a multifunctional double-pulse test board was designed for the dynamic characterization of SiC devices. LTspice simulations revealed the switching characteristics under an 800 V operating condition. Subsequently, a thermal simulation model was constructed in COMSOL to quantify the module junction temperature gradient (25 °C → 80 °C). Key process parameters affecting reliability were then quantified, including conductive adhesive sintering (S820-F680, 39.3 W/m·K), high-temperature baking at 175 °C, and aluminum wire bonding (15 mil wire diameter and 500 mW ultrasonic power/500 g bonding force). Finally, a double-pulse dynamic test platform was established to capture switching transient characteristics. Experimental results demonstrated the following: (1) The packaged module successfully passed the 800 V high-voltage validation. Measured drain current (4.62 A) exhibited an error of <0.65% compared to the simulated value (4.65 A). (2) The simulated junction temperature (80 °C) was significantly below the safety threshold (175 °C). (3) Microscopic examination using a Leica IVesta 3 microscope (55× magnification) confirmed the absence of voids at the sintering and bonding interfaces. (4) Frequency-dependent dynamic characterization revealed a 6 nH parasitic inductance via Ansys Q3D 2025 R1 simulation, with experimental validation at 8.3 nH through double-pulse testing. Thermal evaluations up to 200 kHz indicated 109 °C peak temperature (below 175 °C datasheet limit) and low switching losses. This work provides a critical process benchmark for the micro/nano-manufacturing of high-density SiC modules. Full article

Automated fiber placement (AFP) composites exhibit complex mechanical behaviors due to manufacturing-induced mesostructural variations, including resin-rich regions and tow gaps that significantly influence both local stress distributions and global material responses. This study presents a hierarchically nested modeling framework based on the Parametric High-Fidelity Generalized Method of Cells (PHFGMC) to predict the effective elastic properties and nonlinear mechanical response of AFP composites. The PHFGMC model integrates micro- and meso-scale analyses using representative volume elements (RVEs) derived from micrographs of AFP composite laminates to capture these manufacturing-induced characteristics. Multiple RVE configurations with varied gap patterns are analyzed to quantify the influence of mesostructural features on global stress–strain response. Predictions for linear and nonlinear elastic behaviors are validated against experimental results from carbon fiber/epoxy AFP specimens, demonstrating good quantitative agreement with measured responses. A cohesive extension of the PHFGMC framework further captures damage initiation and crack propagation under transverse tensile loading, revealing failure mechanisms specifically associated with tow gaps and resin-rich areas. By systematically accounting for manufacturing-induced variability through detailed RVE modeling, the nested PHFGMC framework enables the accurate prediction of global mechanical performance and localized behavior, providing a robust computational tool for optimizing AFP composite design in aerospace and other high-performance applications. As an emerging energy-saving approach, bio-inspired drag reduction technology has become a key research direction for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This study introduces the latest research progress on bio-inspired microstructured surfaces in the field of underwater drag reduction, focusing on analyzing the drag reduction mechanism, preparation process, and application effect of the three major technological paths; namely, bio-inspired non-smooth surfaces, bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces, and bio-inspired modified coatings. Bio-inspired non-smooth surfaces can significantly reduce the wall shear stress by regulating the flow characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer through microstructure design. Bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces form stable gas–liquid interfaces through the construction of micro-nanostructures and reduce frictional resistance by utilizing the slip boundary effect. Bio-inspired modified coatings, on the other hand, realize the synergistic function of drag reduction and antifouling through targeted chemical modification of materials and design of micro-nanostructures. Although these technologies have made significant progress in drag reduction performance, their engineering applications still face bottlenecks such as manufacturing process complexity, gas layer stability, and durability. Future research should focus on the analysis of drag reduction mechanisms and optimization of material properties under multi-physical field coupling conditions, the development of efficient and low-cost manufacturing processes, and the enhancement of surface stability and adaptability through dynamic self-healing coatings and smart response materials. It is hoped that the latest research status of bio-inspired drag reduction technology reviewed in this study provides a theoretical basis and technical reference for the sustainable development and energy-saving design of ships and underwater vehicles. In this study, prospects of designing new Al–Ca–Cu–Mn (Zr) alloys for additive manufacturing (AM) were evaluated for the example of laser remelting of thin-sheet rolled products. The new as-cast alloys have a hypereutectic structure containing Al27Ca3Cu7 primary crystals and ultrafine eutectic particles of (Al,Cu)4Ca and Al27Ca3Cu7 phases in equilibrium with the aluminum solid solution. The solid solutions are additionally strengthened by alloying with Mn and micro additions of Zr, which contribute to the formation of coarsening-resistant phases without compromising the manufacturability of the alloys. Laser remelting, which simulates AM-typical solidification conditions, promotes the formation of a pseudoeutectic cellular structure without the occurrence of undesirable primary Al27Ca3Cu7. The size of the dendritic cells and eutectic particles is 10 times smaller (for solidification rates of ~200 K/s) than that of the as-cast state. This structure provides for a higher hardness of the laser-remelted alloy (96 HV) as compared to the as-cast alloy (85 HV). Data for the alloy after 350–400 °C long-term annealing for up to 100 h show that the hardness of the Al–Ca–Cu–Mn–Zr alloys declines relatively slowly by ~7.5% as compared to the Zr-free alloy, whose hardness decreases by ~22%. Thus, one can consider these alloys as a promising candidate for AM processes that require high thermal stability. Full article
