Artificial intelligence technologies, particularly machine learning and computer vision, are being increasingly utilized to preserve, restore, and create immersive virtual experiences with cultural artifacts and sites, thus aiding in conserving cultural heritage and making it accessible to a global audience. This paper examines the performance of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), especially Style-Based Generator Architecture (StyleGAN), as a deep learning approach for producing realistic images of Egyptian monuments. We used Sigmoid loss for Language–Image Pre-training (SigLIP) as a unique image–text alignment system to guide monument generation through semantic elements. We also studied truncation methods to regulate the generated image noise and identify the most effective parameter settings based on architectural representation versus diverse output creation. An improved discriminator design that combined noise addition with squeeze-and-excitation blocks and a modified MinibatchStdLayer produced 27.5% better Fréchet Inception Distance performance than the original discriminator models. Moreover, differential evolution for latent-space optimization reduced alignment mistakes during specific monument construction tasks by about 15%. We checked a wide range of truncation values from 0.1 to 1.0 and found that somewhere between 0.4 and 0.7 was the best range because it allowed for good accuracy while retaining many different architectural elements. Our findings indicate that specific model optimization strategies produce superior outcomes by creating better-quality and historically correct representations of diverse Egyptian monuments. Thus, the developed technology may be instrumental in generating educational and archaeological visualization assets while adding virtual tourism capabilities. Full article

Introduction: Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a common precancerous condition affecting the lips, primarily caused by prolonged ultraviolet radiation exposure. Various treatment options are available. However, the optimal treatment approach remains a subject of debate. Objective: To summarize and compare practice-relevant interventions for AC. Materials and Methods: A pre-defined protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021225182). Systematic searches in Medline, Embase, and Central, along with manual trial register searches, identified studies reporting participant clearance rates (PCR) or recurrence rates (PRR). Quality assessment for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool 2. Uncontrolled studies were evaluated using the tool developed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The generalized linear mixed model was used to pool proportions for uncontrolled studies. A pairwise meta-analysis for RCTs was applied, using the odds ratio (OR) as the effect estimate and the GRADE approach to evaluate the quality of the evidence. Adverse events were analyzed qualitatively. Results: A comprehensive inclusion of 36 studies facilitated an evaluation of 614 participants for PCR, and 430 patients for PRR. Diclofenac showed the lowest PCR (0.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.41; 0.66]), while CO2 laser showed the highest PCR (0.97, 95% CI [0.90; 0.99]). For PRR, Er:YAG laser showed the highest rates (0.14, 95% CI [0.08; 0.21]), and imiquimod the lowest (0.00, 95% CI [0.00; 0.06]). In a pairwise meta-analysis, the OR indicated a lower recurrence rate for Er:YAG ablative fractional laser (AFL)-primed methyl-aminolevulinate photodynamic therapy (MAL-PDT) (Er:YAG AFL-PDT) compared to methyl-aminolevulinate photodynamic therapy (MAL-PDT) alone (OR = 0.22, 95% CI [0.06; 0.82]). The CO2 laser showed fewer local side effects than the Er:YAG laser, while PDTs caused more skin reactions. Due to qualitative data, comparability was limited, highlighting the need for individualized treatment. Conclusions: This study provides a complete and up-to-date evidence synthesis of practice-relevant interventions for AC, identifying the CO2 laser as the most effective treatment and regarding PCR and imiquimod as most effective concerning PRR. This paper focuses on the sealing failure problem of double-lip seal rings for high-speed ball bearings used in unmanned aerial vehicles. By using ANSYS 2023R1 software, a thermal–stress–wear coupled finite element model was established. Taking the contact pressure and volume loss due to wear as indicators to evaluate sealing performance, this study analyzed the influence of lip seal structural parameters on sealing performance, performed response surface optimization of the seal structure parameters and conducted a comparative test on lip seals before and after optimization. The research results show that the contact pressure at the main lip of the lip seal was the greatest, which was 0.79 MPa, and the volume loss due to wear lip seal was 7.94 × 10−7 mm3. Optimal sealing performance is achieved when the seal lip inclination angle is 41.68°, the middle width of the lip seal is 0.153 mm, the main lip height is 0.179 mm, the spring center distance is 0.37 mm and the radial interference is 0.0034 mm. After optimization, the grease leakage rate of the sealing ring decreased by 48% compared to before optimization. Full article

Background/Objectives: To investigate acute caffeine (CAF: 375 mg, ≈4.8 mg/kg body mass) effects on energy expenditure (EE) and substrate kinetics during high-intensity interval exercise in individuals with high (HBAT) versus low (LBAT) brown adipose tissue activity using time-trend polynomial modeling. Methods: This is a randomized, double-blind crossover study in which 35 highly-trained males [HBAT-CAF, HBAT-PLA (Placebo), LBAT-CAF, LBAT-PLA] performed 30-min treadmill HIIE. Infrared thermography (IRT) assessed BAT activity by measuring supraclavicular skin temperature (SST). Breath-by-breath ergospirometry measured EE (kcal/min) and carbohydrate (CHO), lipid (LIP), and protein (PTN) oxidation. We applied second- and third-order polynomial regression models to depict the temporal trajectories of metabolic responses. Results: HBAT groups showed 25% higher sustained EE versus LBAT (p < 0.001), amplified by CAF. CHO oxidation exhibited biphasic kinetics: HBAT had 40% higher initial rates (0.75 ± 0.05 vs. 0.45 ± 0.04 g/min; p < 0.001) with accelerated decline (k = −0.21 vs. −0.15/min; p = 0.01). LIP oxidation peaked later in LBAT (40 vs. 20 min in HBAT), with CAF increasing oxidation by 18% in LBAT (p = 0.01). HBAT-CAF uniquely showed transient PTN catabolism (peak: 0.045 g/min at 10 min; k = −0.0033/min; p < 0.001). Conclusions: BAT status determines EE magnitude and substrate-specific kinetic patterns, while CAF exerts divergent modulation, potentiating early glycogenolysis in HBAT and lipolysis in LBAT. The HBAT-CAF synergy triggers acute proteolysis, revealing BAT-mediated metabolic switching. Full article

The lips, due to their unique anatomical characteristics of a thin stratum corneum, the absence of sebaceous glands, and limited melanin content are particularly vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, necessitating specialized photoprotective care. While facial sunscreens are widely available, the development of lip-specific sun protection products remains underexplored. This study aims to analyze technological trends and innovations in lip photoprotection by reviewing patents published between 2014 and 2024. A comprehensive patent search using the IPC code A61Q19 and the keywords “lip” and “sunscreen” identified 17 relevant patents across China, the United States, and Japan. The patents were examined for active ingredients, formulation strategies, and use of botanical or sustainable excipients. The findings revealed that patented formulations predominantly rely on well-established UV filters such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, octyl methoxycinnamate, and avobenzone, often combined with antioxidants like ferulic acid and rutin for enhanced efficacy. Lipid-based excipients were widely used to improve texture, hydration, and product stability. Although many formulations exhibit a conservative ingredient profile, the strategic combination of UV filters with natural antioxidants and moisturizing lipids demonstrates a multifunctional approach aimed at enhancing both protection and user experience. Effect of Quasi-Static Door Operation on Shear Layer Bifurcations in Supersonic Cavities

Span-wise homogeneous supersonic cavity flows display complicated structures due to shear layer breakdown, flow acoustic resonance, and even non-linear hydrodynamic-acoustic interactions. In practical applications, such as aircraft bays, the cavity is of finite width and has doors, both of which introduce distinctive phenomena that couple with the shear layer at the cavity lip, further modulating shear layer bifurcations and tonal mechanisms. In particular, asymmetric states manifest as ‘tornado’ vortices with significant practical consequences on the design and operation. Both inward- and outward-facing leading-wedge doors, resulting in leading edge shocks directed into and away from the cavity, are examined at select opening angles ranging from 22.5° to 90° (fully open) at Mach 1.6. The computational approach utilizes the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations with a one-equation model and is augmented by experimental observations of cavity floor pressure and surface oil-flow patterns. For the no-doors configuration, the asymmetric results are consistent with a long-time series DDES simulation, previously validated with two experimental databases. When fully open, outer wedge doors (OWD) yield an asymmetric flow, while inner wedge doors (IWD) display only mildly asymmetric behavior. At lower door angles (partially closed cavity), both types of doors display a successive bifurcation of the shear layer, ultimately resulting in a symmetric flow. IWD tend to promote symmetry for all angles observed, with the shear layer experiencing a pitchfork bifurcation at the ‘critical angle’ (67.5°). This is also true for the OWD at the ‘critical angle’ (45°), though an entirely different symmetric flow field is established. The first observation of pitchfork bifurcations (‘critical angle’) for the IWD is at 67.5° and for the OWD, 45°, complementing experimental observations. The back wall signature of the bifurcated shear layer (impingement preference) was found to be indicative of the 3D cavity dynamics and may be used to establish a correspondence between 3D cavity dynamics and the shear layer. Below the critical angle, the symmetric flow field is comprised of counter-rotating vortex pairs at the front and back wall corners. The existence of a critical angle and the process of door opening versus closing indicate the possibility of hysteresis, a preliminary discussion of which is presented. Full article

Background/Objectives: Maternal exposures are known to influence the risk of isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P)—a common and highly heritable birth defect with a multifactorial etiology. Methods: To identify new risk loci, we conducted a genome-wide gene–environment interaction (GEI) analysis of CL/P with maternal smoking and vitamin use in Filipinos (Ncases = 540, Ncontrols = 260). Since GEI analyses are typically low in power and the results can be difficult to interpret, we applied multiple testing frameworks to evaluate potential GEI effects: a one degree-of-freedom (1df) GxE test, the 3df joint test, and the two-step EDGE approach. Results: While no genome-wide significant interactions were detected, we identified 11 suggestive GEIs with smoking and 24 with vitamin use. Several implicated loci contain biologically plausible genes. Notable interactions with smoking include loci near FEZF1, TWIST2, and NET1. While FEZF1 is involved in early neuronal development, TWIST2 and NET1 regulate epithelial–mesenchymal transition, which is required for proper lip and palate fusion. Interactions with vitamins encompass CECR2—a chromatin remodeling protein required for neural tube closure—and FURIN, a critical protease during early embryogenesis that activates various growth factors and extracellular matrix proteins. The activity of both proteins is influenced by folic acid. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the critical role of maternal exposures in identifying genes associated with structural birth defects such as CL/P and provide new paths to explore for CL/P genetics. Infections caused by Acinetobacter baumannii are increasing worldwide. We evaluated the antibiotic resistance profile, biofilm production, and the frequency of 12 genes encoding carbapenemases and 13 virulence factors in 90 isolates from patients of three hospitals in various regions of Poland. Antibiotic resistance survey was performed using the disc-diffusion method, genes encoding resistance to carbapenems and virulence factors were detected with PCR, and biofilm formation was tested using microtiter plates. A total of 52.2% of isolates were resistant to all tested antibiotic groups (penicillins with β-lactamase inhibitors, cephalosporins, carbapenems, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, and trimethoprim plus sulfamethoxazole). Among the genes encoding carbapenem resistance, the blaOXA-23 (68.9%), blaOXA-40 (83.3%), and ISAba-blaOXA-51 (18.9%) were detected. The ompA, ata, and recA genes responsible for biofilm formation, adhesion, and stress response, respectively, occurred in all isolates. Genes responsible for the production of other adhesins (bap—94.4%, espA—4.4%, chop—37.7%), biofilm formation (pbpG—90.0%), production of siderophore (basD—97.7%), toxins (lipA—92.2%, cpaA—1.1%), glycoconjugates (bfmR—84.4%), and inducing host cell death (fhaB—71.1%, abeD—93.3%) were also found. A total of 68.8% of isolates produced biofilm. The isolates from Masovia had more virulence genes than isolates from the other regions; moreover, all isolates from Masovia and West Pomerania were multidrug-resistant (MDR), including resistance to carbapenems. Background/Objectives: Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without palate (NSCL/P) is a common, multifactorial congenital anomaly. As genetic associations can be population-specific, this study aimed to investigate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the VAX1, MAFB, and WNT3 genes for association with NSCL/P in a Japanese cohort. Methods: A case–control study was conducted with 310 Japanese patients with NSCL/P and 308 ethnically matched healthy controls from Aichi Gakuin Dental Hospital. We genotyped SNPs rs7078160 (VAX1), rs13041247 (MAFB), and rs3809857 (WNT3) using TaqMan assays. Associations were assessed using chi-squared tests, with results stratified by sex and corrected for multiple comparisons using the Bonferroni method. Results: The VAX1 rs7078160 A allele was significantly associated with an increased risk for NSCL/P (OR = 1.67, p < 0.00001). The association was particularly strong in females (OR = 1.93, p < 0.00001) but not significant in males after correction. The MAFB rs13041247 variant showed a nominal protective association with the NSCLO subtype that was not significant after Bonferroni correction. No significant association was found for WNT3. A notable gene–gene interaction was observed, where carrying risk alleles for both VAX1 and MAFB significantly increased overall NSCL/P risk (OR = 2.65, p = 0.00008). Conclusions: VAX1 rs7078160 is a significant risk factor for NSCL/P in the Japanese population, with a pronounced female-specific effect. A synergistic interaction between VAX1 and MAFB elevates disease risk, whereas WNT3 was not implicated in this cohort. These findings underscore the population-specific genetic architecture of NSCL/P. Full article

Background: Non-syndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFCs) are one of the common congenital malformations in Vietnam, with 1.4 per 1000 live births, with notable sex differences in occurrence. This case–control study aims to investigate potential sex-specific interactions of WNT3 and NOG polymorphisms across NSOFC subtypes in a Vietnamese population. Methods: A total of 720 participants were separated into 4 groups with a male/female ratio of 1:1 (160 individuals with cleft lip and palate (NSCLP), 160 with cleft lip only (NSCLO), 160 with cleft palate only (NSCPO), 240 healthy controls). Two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), rs3809857 and rs227731, were genotyped by using the StepOnePlus Real-Time PCR System. Results: The most significant findings were found in the male NSCLO group under a recessive model of WNT3 rs3809857 after applying Bonferroni correction, as a five-fold protective factor with OR = 0.18 (95% confidence interval: 0.05–0.64, p = 0.0033). Additionally, the weak or moderate protective association between rs3809857 and male NSCLP was found with p < 0.05 under the dominant model. However, there were no significant findings in the female NSOFC subtypes associated with WNT3. Conversely, NOG rs227731 results showed a weak increased risk in female NSCLO and NSCPO with p < 0.05. Conclusion: this study identified the critical role of WNT3 rs3809857 in reducing NSCLO risk in males. These findings support the potential influence of sex as a modifying factor in the genetic susceptibility to non-syndromic orofacial clefts. Full article

Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess an intrinsic tumor-tropic ability, and therefore, MSCs may potentially be used as biomimetic carriers for active drug delivery systems targeting tumors. We previously developed a method to efficiently load liposomes onto the surface of MSCs via electrostatic interactions. The prepared liposome-loaded MSCs (Lip-MSCs) spontaneously accumulated in solid melanoma tumors with low vascular permeability while stably carrying liposomes. Methods: To explore Lip-MSC applications in cancer chemotherapy, doxorubicin (DOX)-encapsulated liposomes (DOX-Lip) were prepared and loaded onto MSCs. The cell viability, DOX-releasing properties, tumor-homing capacity, and anti-tumor efficacy of DOX-Lip-MSCs were analyzed. Results: Small liposomes (100 nm) retained DOX, whereas significant leakage of DOX was observed from 600 nm-sized liposomes. Based on this result, we used 100 nm DOX-Lip for the preparation of DOX-Lip-MSCs. Compared with MSCs loaded with DOX by incubation with DOX solution, DOX-Lip-MSCs could load a larger amount of DOX with minimal cytotoxicity. DOX-Lip-MSCs also showed sustained DOX release. DOX-Lip-MSCs efficiently migrated toward the conditioned medium of B16/BL6 melanoma cells in vitro and accumulated in B16/BL6 tumors in vivo, leading to a significant inhibitory effect on tumor growth. Conclusions: Lip-MSCs can serve as an efficient carrier to deliver anti-cancer drugs into solid tumors. Full article

Lip-reading, i.e., the ability to recognize speech using only visual cues, plays a fundamental role in audio-visual speech processing, intelligibility, and comprehension. This capacity is integral to language development and functioning; it emerges in early development, and it slowly evolves. By linking psycholinguistics, psychophysics, and neurophysiology, the present narrative review explores the development and significance of lip-reading across different stages of life, highlighting its role in human communication in both typical and atypical development, e.g., in the presence of hearing or language impairments. We examined how relying on lip-reading becomes crucial when communication occurs in noisy environments and, on the contrary, the impacts that visual barriers can have on speech perception. Finally, this review highlights individual differences and the role of cultural and social contexts for a better understanding of the visual counterpart of speech. Full article

Background/Objectives: Schwannoma is a rare tumor, typical in young adults, originating from the myelin sheath that surrounds Schwann cells. It can occur in any part of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). It develops in the head and neck region in 25–48% of cases, and the eighth pair of cranial nerves (vestibulocochlear nerves) are the most hit (vestibular schwannoma). Oral cavity involvement is exceedingly rare, accounting for about 1–2% of all cases. The most affected oral site is the tongue, especially its anterior third, while localization on the lip is one of the least common sites for the development of this lesion. Case Presentation: A lower lip schwannoma on a 17-year-old boy, present for about 7 years, was documented. Material and Methods: PubMed and Google Scholar were used as research engines; English scientific works published in the last 20 years (2005–2024) regarding oral cavity involvement, using the keywords “Schwannoma”, “Oral Schwannoma”, “Pediatric Oral Schwannoma”, and “Schwannoma of the lip”, were considered. Results: In total, 805 and 16,890 items were found on PubMed and Google Scholar search engines, respectively. After title, abstract, full text evaluation, and elimination of duplicates, 26 articles were included in the review process. Discussion: Clinically, oral schwannoma presents as an asymptomatic hard–elastic fluctuating mass, often misdiagnosed on the lip as a traumatic or inflammatory lesion (e.g., mucocele). Biopsy is mandatory, and histological examination reveals positivity to the neuronal marker S-100. Conclusions: Complete excision also prevents recurrence. Malignant transformation is extremely rare. A turboprop aircraft is exposed to the risk of bird strikes during flight, which may have a serious impact on flight safety once the bird is sucked into the engine. In this study, the aerodynamic and bird exclusion characteristics of a branched turboprop inlet were tested on a branched turboprop inlet–bird striking experiment system under ground suction conditions. The ingestion processes of the bird were captured by a high-speed camera system. The static pressure at the inner wall of the inlet during the ingestion process was measured. The results indicate that when a low-speed bird at a large incident angle impacts on the wall of the inlet near the lower lip under ground suction conditions, the bird is easily sucked into the core duct. Conversely, it is more likely to be excluded by the bypass duct. Moreover, when the bird moves into the inlet, the static pressure on the wall of the area where it passes through increases significantly. Full article

The rising popularity of ecotourism on the Tibetan Plateau has intensified the tension between wildlife conservation and economic development. Conventional wildlife displays often fail to achieve high-fidelity, non-invasive representations of animal morphology and typically lack immersive, interactive features, limiting public engagement in ecological protection. To address these limitations, this study presents a fur simulation algorithm based on the Texture Procedural Overlay Technique (TPOT), integrated with Augmented Reality (AR) technology, focusing on the endangered white-lipped deer in the Sanjiangyuan region. The proposed TPOT-based algorithm enhances the visual realism of fur through multi-layered procedural texturing and physical property fusion. Combined with an AR-driven interactive framework, it seamlessly integrates high-resolution 3D models into real-world environments, significantly improving user immersion and engagement. Comparative experiments demonstrate that the approach surpasses traditional static display fidelity and animation rendering efficiency methods. User feedback further validates its effectiveness for scientific research and environmental education. This work introduces an innovative technological solution for wildlife conservation on the Tibetan Plateau and provides a practical reference for applying digital technologies in ecotourism.
