Mountain regions across Europe face demographic decline and institutional fragmentation that hinder sustainable tourism development. This study analyzes the territorial governance system of the Val Canale and Canal del Ferro valleys (Italian Alps) with the aim of designing a stakeholder-based Organizational Model (OM) to strengthen sustainable tourism coordination in a peripheral mountain context. A qualitative single-case study approach integrates Stakeholder Analysis, Actor-Linkage Matrix, Appreciative Inquiry, and spatial contextualization to examine relational, institutional, and territorial dynamics. The findings reveal a territory rich in environmental and cultural assets—characterized by protected areas and extensive trail networks—yet constrained by fragmented inter-municipal cooperation and limited supra-municipal coordination. Governance fragmentation, rather than resource scarcity, emerges as the primary barrier to coherent territorial development. In response, the proposed multi-level Organizational Model introduces a valley-level coordination unit designed to institutionalize collaborative governance, enhance administrative capacity, and align local initiatives with regional strategies. By operationalizing stakeholder theory within a structured territorial framework, the study contributes to place-based governance literature and offers transferable insights for peripheral mountain regions facing similar coordination challenges. Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia worldwide and has a substantial genetic component. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified more than 100 susceptibility loci; however, replication across populations remains variable, suggesting potential population-specific differences in the genetic determinants of AF. To date, no whole-genome sequencing (WGS)-based study has evaluated AF susceptibility in a Polish population. Methods: We performed WGS (mean coverage 35×) in 233 unrelated individuals recruited within the Thousand Polish Genomes Project, including 56 patients with non-valvular AF and 177 controls without AF. After quality control and linkage disequilibrium pruning within a cardiovascular gene panel, 19,395 variants were analyzed. Association testing was performed using logistic regression adjusted for age and sex, applying both false discovery rate and Bonferroni correction thresholds. Results: No variants reached statistical significance for association with AF after correction for multiple evaluation. Previously reported susceptibility loci were not replicated in this cohort. Age was strongly associated with AF risk, whereas sex showed no significant effect. Given the relatively modest sample size, the study was primarily powered to detect variants with moderate or large effect sizes; smaller genetic effects reported in large GWASs may remain undetected. Conclusions: This pilot WGS-based study provides an initial exploration of AF-associated genetic variation in a Polish population. The absence of significant associations likely reflects the importance of further investigation in larger and well-characterized Central–Eastern European cohorts before genetic risk stratification approaches can be broadly applied across populations. Idesia polycarpa Maxim. is an important woody oilseed species and is dioecious; however, systematic evidence for sex-specific differences in leaf physico-chemical traits and their spectral responses remains limited. In this study, mature female and male trees were investigated. Leaves were sampled throughout the growing season (May–October), and FTIR-ATR spectra were acquired to derive peak height and peak area metrics for diagnostic bands. In parallel, leaf antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, POD, and APX), biomass-related traits, leaf nutrient concentrations, and rhizosphere soil nutrient indices were measured. Differences between sexes, seasonal dynamics, and spectrum–trait coupling were evaluated using repeated-measures analysis and correlation analyses. The results showed that the positions of major absorption bands were largely consistent between sexes, indicating broadly similar chemical composition, whereas the male plants lacked an obvious band near 1671 cm−1 in May. Several spectral peak parameters were significantly correlated with leaf pH, leaf dry matter content, total phosphorus, and APX activity. Female and male plants exhibited month-dependent differences in enzyme activities, dry matter content, and leaf N and K, and leaf–soil nutrient linkages were also detected, suggesting sex-specific resource allocation patterns. Overall, FTIR-ATR peak metrics provide a rapid means to characterize seasonal variation in leaf physico-chemical properties of I. polycarpa and offer supporting evidence for studies of sexual dimorphism. This paper aims to assess the main drivers influencing business cycle synchronization within the G7 countries. In addition to key elements such as the intensity of bilateral trade and the influence of financial linkages on synchronization; we introduce a new variable that represents the political alignment, which can substantially impact synchronization. In this study, we utilize the variable political distance as a proxy for political alignment, alongside traditional measures of trade intensity, and financial metrics, to examine their effects on business cycle synchronization within the G7. By considering annual data for the period 2013–2023, our findings reveal a positive and significant relationship between trade intensity and financial linkages and synchronization, while political distance exerts a negative and significant impact on synchronization. Consequently, in addition to trade intensity and financial linkages, it is essential for policymakers to take political alignment with their partners into account, even when trade volumes are similar. The accurate measurement and optimization of spatial vitality inside commercial complexes has become crucial for sophisticated urban governance as urban growth moves from rapid expansion to quality-oriented stock augmentation. This research creates a multifaceted assessment methodology that incorporates systemic connectedness (transportation synergy), spatial performance (public activity and social efficacy), and spatial supply (human–land linkages and arrangement). We used a stratified purposive sample of 20 business complexes spread across eight districts in Guangzhou, a typical high-density megacity. In order to understand the underlying mechanisms of spatial vitality, we measured important indicators including the Polycentricity Index (α) and the Spatial Performance Index (β) using a mixed-methods approach that included K-means clustering, multinomial logit regression, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Four important insights are shown by our findings. 1. The paradox of density and efficiency: The notion that high-density development inevitably ensures lively public space is called into question by the lack of a significant linear correlation between the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) and spatial performance (r = 0.32, p > 0.05), despite a core–periphery gradient in development intensity. 2. Structural Supply Demand Mismatch: Although overall spatial performance is strong (β = 0.81 ± 0.07), there is a notable shortfall in cultural and artistic venues, where young adults’ demand (0.27) is 145% greater than supply (0.11). 3. Polycentric Networking vs. Transport Polarization: While spatial structures show a networked polycentric pattern (mean α = 6.40), transportation synergy is affected by core–periphery polarization, which results in “vitality islands” in the periphery. 4. Dual-Path Driving Mechanisms: According to SEM results, cultural spaces have a considerable indirect impact (39.7% mediation) by boosting brand uniqueness and “cultural capital,” while composite plaza spaces have a strong direct effect on commercial performance (γ = 0.682). Based on these findings, we suggest distinct optimization strategies: aging projects need climate-responsive design interventions; growing areas should create family-oriented consumption ecosystems; and core districts should give priority to cultural “IP” integration. For the planning and revitalization of commercial land use in high-density global environments, this study offers a solid analytical framework and practical insights. Full article

This study investigated the effects of compound microbial fermented feed on the growth performance, intestinal architecture, microbiota composition, and metabolic profiles of weaned piglets. Fifty-four weaned piglets were randomly allocated to three dietary treatment groups: a control group (basal diet), a 50% fermented feed group (T1), and a 100% fermented feed group (T2), for a 33-day feeding period. The results indicated that both T1 and T2 diets significantly improved final body weight and average daily gain (ADG), while decreasing the feed-to-gain ratio (F/G) compared with the control (p < 0.05). Morphological assessment revealed that the T1 group significantly elevated the villus height-to-crypt depth ratio in the jejunum and increased the density of goblet cells in the cecum and colon (p < 0.05). Multi-omics analysis indicated that fermented feed significantly reshaped the gut microbiota structure (p < 0.05), characterized by the enrichment of beneficial taxa, including Oscillospiraceae and Lachnospiraceae (p < 0.05), and the modulation of nucleotide and bile acid metabolism. Furthermore, correlation analysis identified significant linkages between the abundance of jejunal Oscillospiraceae and colonic/cecal Lactobacillus with growth performance, intestinal morphology, and key metabolites. This finding systematically elucidates the mechanisms by which compound microbial fermented feed promotes growth and intestinal health in weaned piglets via microbiota-mediated pathways, offering a robust scientific framework for the development of antibiotic-free nutritional strategies. Resource-based regions (RBRs) are vital to socio-economic development, yet intensive resource exploitation strains water, energy, and food (WEF) security and causes environmental stress. Optimizing collaborative management of the WEF nexus is crucial for their sustainable development. This study developed an integrated model (WEFN) for optimizing the WEF nexus in RBRs by combining multi-objective optimization and the efficacy coefficient method. The WEFN model incorporates internal couplings and external linkages of the WEF nexus into objectives and constraints. Using Daqing, China, as a case study, six policy scenarios were designed. S1 follows the 2030 planning scheme, while S2–S5 prioritize energy-food supply, environmental protection, water conservation, and economic gains, respectively. S6, formulated via the WEFN model, integrates the objectives of S2–S5 into a collaborative management policy. A comprehensive benefit evaluation system was established, yielding an Evaluation Index (EVI) to quantify WEF system benefits and identify the optimal scenario. Results show that collaborative policy S6 best supports coordinated socio-economic and environmental development in Daqing. The findings offer a valuable reference for WEF nexus management in other RBRs. Full article

Microplastic pollution has become widespread in aquatic ecosystems worldwide; however, its consequences for ecosystem service provision and fisheries’ long-term sustainability remain poorly integrated across scientific disciplines. While previous reviews have primarily focused on sources, distribution patterns, and toxicological responses, this review advances the field by synthesizing existing evidence through an ecosystem-service framework. Specifically, it integrates organism-level biological responses with population dynamics and fishery productivity to evaluate how microplastic exposure may influence provisioning, regulating, and supporting services. It also critically provides patterns of sublethal effects, trophic transfer dynamics, and interactions with co-stressors. Particular attention is given to the challenge of scaling from physiological responses to measurable impacts on biomass production, recruitment stability, and habitat functionality. To clarify these linkages, the review provides a structured synthesis of service pathways connecting microplastic exposure to fishery-relevant outcomes and highlights priority research gaps necessary for quantitative risk assessment. In conclusion, advancing sustainability assessments requires long-term, field-based integration of ecotoxicology, population modeling, and ecosystem process metrics. By reframing microplastic pollution within a service-delivery context, this review offers a focused analytical foundation for evaluating its significance to sustainable fisheries and aquatic resource governance. This study investigates the forward discount puzzle by examining the dynamic relationships among excess returns arising from interest rate parity deviations, interest rate differentials, and the USD/JPY exchange rate. The empirical analysis employs correlation analysis, the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) cointegration test, and variance decomposition together with impulse response functions derived from a Toda–Yamamoto augmented Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model, using data spanning January 2001 to September 2025. The correlation results indicate that the spot exchange rate is negatively related to both the swap rate and the interest rate differential. Impulse response analysis shows that the USD/JPY rate responds positively to swap rate shocks in the medium to long run, while responding negatively to interest rate differential shocks in the short run. Variance decomposition results are consistent with the impulse response analysis and underscore the dominant bilateral linkage between the exchange rate and the swap rate. The long-run ARDL estimates further reveal that the swap rate is positively associated with dollar appreciation, whereas both the interest rate differential and relative output are negatively related. Overall, although short-run arbitrage appears temporarily, the cointegration and dynamic results provide robust evidence that the forward discount puzzle persists for a substantial period rather than interest rate parity holding. This study investigates the volatility nexus between exchange rates, interest rates, and stock market returns in South Africa, an emerging economy characterised by deep financial integration and exposure to global capital flows. Using monthly data from January 2003 to February 2025, the analysis employs a multi-layered econometric framework combining asymmetric GARCH models (EGARCH and GJR-GARCH), an Asymmetric Dynamic Conditional Correlation (ADCC-GARCH) specification, and a GARCH-MIDAS–DCC approach that decomposes volatility into long-run and short-run components while modelling time-varying cross-market dependence. The findings indicate that exchange rate volatility is the dominant and most persistent driver of financial market risk, highlighting the central role of the South African rand in transmitting global shocks to domestic markets. Equity market volatility is largely shock driven and mean reverting, with sharp increases during major crisis episodes such as the Global Financial Crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. Dynamic correlations across markets are persistent but predominantly negative between stock returns and exchange rates, while linkages involving interest rates are weaker and more episodic. Overall, the results suggest that South Africa’s financial volatility nexus operates primarily through exchange rate-driven transmission rather than short-run contagion effects. Full article

Crumb rubber concrete (CRC), as a heterogeneous multiphase composite material composed of coarse aggregate, rubber particles, cement mortar, pores, and other constituents, is frequently regarded as a homogeneous material in engineering applications. This study employs numerical homogenization to compute equivalent mechanical parameters for CRC. By establishing a two-dimensional parametric random aggregate model combined with Monte Carlo simulations and finite element computations, it systematically analyzes the influence of rubber content (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%) and specimen size (50–150 mm) on CRC’s macroscopic equivalent elastic modulus. The research reveals that stable homogenization results, usable as macroscopic equivalent material parameters, are attained when the Representative Volume Element (RVE) size of the CRC model is ≥5 times the maximum aggregate particle size (dₘₐₓ). The equivalent modulus E decreases rapidly initially with increasing size, followed by a decelerated decline toward stabilization. A predictive model based on the fitted formula ln Eᵣ = kᵣ ln L + bᵣ (where Eᵣ denotes reduced modulus) enables elastic modulus prediction for large-scale components up to 600 mm. This study elucidates the macro-mesoscopic linkage mechanism governing CRC’s equivalent elastic parameters, providing a theoretical foundation for engineering structural design. Full article

Among the most structurally diverse biomacromolecules, polysaccharides have attracted increased attention as nanocarriers for precision medicine due to their inherent biocompatibility and versatility in functionalization. Molecular features, such as monomer composition, glycosidic linkages, charge density, and chemical modification, essentially determine the nanoscale assembly process of these biopolymers, as well as their biological compatibility. This review highlights the role of these properties in the assembly process of polysaccharide-based nanocarriers leading to a variety of self-assembled nanostructures, such as polyelectrolyte complexes, protein–polysaccharide complexes, amphiphilic micelles, vesicles, hybrid systems, and nanogels, which are extensively discussed throughout the review. This review also focuses on the structure–property–function relationships of nanocarriers as applied to the rapidly developing area of precision medicine, emphasizing the problems of sustainability and reproducibility. This study examined the influence of Environmental, Social, and Governance factors on the financial performance of companies listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul). Employing a panel data approach, the analysis covers 450 firm observations collected annually during the period 2018–2023. Financial performance is measured using Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE), while ESG disclosure scores are disaggregated into their three constituent pillars. Firm size, revenue per share, and leverage are incorporated as control variables. The fixed effects regression results reveal that social factors demonstrate statistically significant positive relationships with both ROA and ROE, supporting the stakeholder theory-based perspective that strong social practices enhance operational efficiency and investor confidence. Conversely, environmental and governance factors exhibit no significant association with either financial performance metric within the study period. Leverage shows a significant negative relationship with ROA but not with ROE, while revenue per share consistently demonstrates strong positive associations with both performance measures. These findings contribute to the limited literature on ESG–performance linkages in Gulf Cooperation Council markets and offer important implications for corporate managers, investors, and policymakers seeking to advance sustainability objectives within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030. We report the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and single-crystal X-ray structures of 5-methyl-3-phenylbenzo[e][1,2,4]triazine (I) and its precursor N′-(3-methyl-2-nitrophenyl)benzohydrazide (IV). Compound IV was obtained by nucleophilic aromatic substitution of 1-fluoro-3-methyl-2-nitrobenzene with benzohydrazide and was converted to I through a reductive cyclodehydration/oxidative aromatization sequence. The present study provides a concise route to the 5-methyl regioisomer together with full structural characterization and examines how methyl substitution at the 5-position influences molecular geometry and crystal packing relative to the previously reported 6- and 8-methyl analogs. X-ray analysis shows that IV adopts a conjugated hydrazide framework with a twisted N–N linkage and an out-of-plane nitro group. In the crystal, it forms one-dimensional N–H⋯O hydrogen-bonded chains further assembled by weaker intermolecular contacts. By contrast, I displays an essentially planar benzo[e][1,2,4]triazine core with an almost coplanar phenyl substituent and packs into slipped π-stacked columns reinforced by secondary C–H⋯N contacts. Comparison with the previously reported methyl regioisomers shows that relocation of the methyl group to the 5-position has little effect on the intrinsic molecular geometry of the benzo[e][1,2,4]triazine scaffold, while subtly modulating the stacking arrangement and secondary packing interactions in the solid state. These results further define the role of methyl-substituent position in shaping the supramolecular organization of 3-phenylbenzo[e][1,2,4]triazines. Full article

Rising atmospheric CO2 levels have increased the demand for robust, scalable adsorbents for practical CO2 capture and separation. Porous organic polymers (POPs) are attractive candidates because their pore architecture and binding site properties can be precisely tuned via building blocks and linkage formation. This review summarizes experimental and computational studies of azo-linked POPs and, more broadly, nitrogen–nitrogen (N–N) linked systems, emphasizing how synthetic routes, building blocks, and framework topology govern CO2 uptake. We highlight key synthetic strategies and representative systems, including porphyrin–azo networks, and discuss the relatively sparse experimental literature on alternative N–N linked POPs incorporating azoxy and azodioxy motifs. Emphasis is placed on reversible nitroso/azodioxide chemistry as a potential pathway to ordered porous organic materials. Computational studies provide a practical route to connect structure with adsorption behavior in largely amorphous or partially ordered networks. We review hierarchical workflows combining periodic DFT and electrostatic potential properties, grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations, and binding energy calculations to rationalize trends and identify favorable binding environments. Computational findings demonstrate that pore accessibility and stacking models can strongly influence predicted CO2 adsorption. This review provides guidelines for designing POPs with enhanced CO2 adsorption, offering an outlook and discussing challenges for future studies. Full article
