The main advantage of using biomass for energy generation is the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. For a fast reduction effect, it is important to use biomass characterised by an annual growth cycle. These may be fallen leaves. The fuel properties of the leaves can change during the growth period. These changes can result from both the natural growth process and environmental factors—particulate matter adsorption. The main objective was to determine changes in the characteristics of leaves and needles during the growth period (from May to October). Furthermore, to determine the effect of adsorbed particulate matter, the washing process was carried out. Studies were carried out for three tree species: Norway maple, horse chestnut and European larch. Proximate and ultimate analysis was performed and mercury content was determined. During the growth period, beneficial changes were observed: an increase in carbon content and a decrease in hydrogen and sulphur content. The unfavourable change was a significant increase in ash content, which caused a decrease in calorific value. The increase in ash content was caused by adsorbed particulate matter. They were mostly absorbed by the tissues of the needle and leaves and could not be removed by washing the surface. Full article

The transition to green energy in the transport sector is becoming a priority in the context of global climate challenges and the European Green Deal. This paper investigates the development of alternative fuelling stations, particularly electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and hydrogen stations, across EU countries with a focus on Poland. It combines a policy and technology overview with a quantitative scientific analysis, offering a multidimensional perspective on green infrastructure deployment. A Pearson correlation analysis reveals significant links between charging station density and both GDP per capita and the share of renewable energy. The study introduces an original Infrastructure Accessibility Index (IAI) to compare infrastructure availability across EU member states and models Poland’s EV charging station demand up to 2030 under multiple growth scenarios. Furthermore, the article provides a comprehensive overview of biofuels, including first-, second-, and third-generation technologies, and highlights recent advances in hydrogen and renewable electricity integration. Emphasis is placed on life cycle considerations, energy source sustainability, and economic implications. The findings support policy development toward zero-emission mobility and the decarbonisation of transport systems, offering recommendations for infrastructure expansion and energy diversification strategies. The European Union promotes decarbonization in energy-intensive industries like glass manufacturing. Collaboration between industry and researchers focuses on reducing CO2 emissions through hydrogen (H2) integration as a natural gas substitute. However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no updated real-world case studies are available in the literature that consider the on-site implementation of an electrolyzer for autonomous hydrogen production capable of meeting the needs of a glass manufacturing plant within current technological constraints. This study examines a representative hollow glass plant and develops various decarbonization scenarios through detailed process simulations in Aspen Plus. The models provide consistent mass and energy balances, enabling the quantification of energy demand and key cost drivers associated with H2 integration. These results form the basis for a scenario-specific techno-economic assessment, including both on-grid and off-grid configurations. Subsequently, the analysis estimates the levelized costs of hydrogen (LCOH) for each scenario and compares them to current and projected benchmarks. The study also highlights ongoing research projects and technological advancements in the transition from natural gas to H2 in the glass sector. Finally, potential barriers to large-scale implementation are discussed, along with policy and infrastructure recommendations to foster industrial adoption. These findings suggest that hybrid configurations represent the most promising path toward industrial H2 adoption in glass manufacturing. Full article

Minimizing carbon dioxide emissions is crucial due to the generation of energy from fossil fuels. The significance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, which is highly successful in mitigating carbon emissions, has increased. On the other hand, hydrogen is an important energy carrier for storing and transporting energy, and technologies that rely on hydrogen have become increasingly promising as the world moves toward a more environmentally friendly approach. Nevertheless, the integration of CCS technologies into power production processes is a significant challenge, requiring the enhancement of the combined power generation–CCS process. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in process intensification (PI), which aims to create smaller, cleaner, and more energy efficient processes. The goal of this research is to demonstrate the process intensification potential and to model and simulate a hybrid integrated–intensified adsorptive-membrane reactor process for simultaneous carbon capture and hydrogen production. A comprehensive, multi-scale, multi-phase, dynamic, computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based process model is constructed, which quantifies the various underlying complex physicochemical phenomena occurring at the pellet and reactor levels. Model simulations are then performed to investigate the impact of dimensionless variables on overall system performance and gain a better understanding of this cyclic reaction/separation process. The results indicate that the hybrid system shows a steady-state cyclic behavior to ensure flexible operating time. A sustainability evaluation was conducted to illustrate the sustainability improvement in the proposed process compared to the traditional design. The results indicate that the integrated–intensified adsorptive-membrane reactor technology enhances sustainability by 35% to 138% for the chosen 21 indicators. The average enhancement in sustainability is almost 57%, signifying that the sustainability evaluation reveals significant benefits of the integrated–intensified adsorptive-membrane reactor process compared to HTSR + LTSR. Direct electrification and hydrogen utilization represent two key pathways for decarbonizing the glass industry, with their effectiveness subject to adequate furnace design and renewable energy availability. This study presents a techno-economic assessment for optimal solar energy integration in a representative 300 t/d oxyfuel container glass furnace with a specific energy consumption of 4.35 GJ/t. A mixed-integer linear programming formulation is developed to evaluate specific melting costs, carbon emissions, and renewable energy self-consumption and self-production rates across three scenarios: direct solar coupling, battery storage, and a hydrogen-based infrastructure. Battery storage achieves the greatest reductions in specific melting costs and emissions, whereas hydrogen integration minimizes electricity export to the grid. By incorporating capital investment considerations, the study quantifies the cost premiums and capacity requirements under varying decarbonization targets. A combination of 30 MW of solar plant and 9 MW of electric boosting enables the realization of around 30% carbon reduction while increasing total costs by 25%. Deeper decarbonization targets require more advanced systems, with batteries emerging as a cost-effective solution. These findings offer critical insights into the economic and environmental trade-offs, as well as the technical constraints associated with renewable energy adoption in the glass industry, providing a foundation for strategic energy and decarbonization planning. The production of iron and steel plays a significant role in the anthropogenic carbon footprint, accounting for 7% of global GHG emissions. In the context of CO2 mitigation, the steelmaking industry is looking to potentially replace traditional carbon-based ironmaking processes with hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore in shaft furnaces. Before industrialization, detailed modeling and parametric studies were needed to determine the proper operating parameters of this promising technology. The modeling approach selected here was to complement REDUCTOR, a detailed finite-volume model of the shaft furnace, which can simulate the gas and solid flows, heat transfers and reaction kinetics throughout the reactor, with an extension that describes the whole gas circuit of the direct reduction plant, including the top gas recycling set up and the fresh hydrogen production. Innovative strategies (such as the redirection of part of the bustle gas to a cooling inlet, the use of high nitrogen content in the gas, and the introduction of a hot solid burden) were investigated, and their effects on furnace operation (gas utilization degree and total energy consumption) were studied with a constant metallization target of 94%. It has also been demonstrated that complete metallization can be achieved at little expense. These strategies can improve the thermochemical state of the furnace and lead to different energy requirements. Full article

The maritime sector’s transition to sustainable energy is critical for achieving global carbon neutrality, with container terminals representing a key focus due to their high energy consumption and emissions. This study explores the potential of hydrogen energy as a decarbonization solution for port operations, using the Chuanshan Port Area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port (CPANZP) as a case study. Through a comprehensive analysis of hydrogen production, storage, refueling, and consumption technologies, we demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of integrating hydrogen systems into port infrastructure. Our findings highlight the successful deployment of a hybrid “wind-solar-hydrogen-storage” energy system at CPANZP, which achieves 49.67% renewable energy contribution and an annual reduction of 22,000 tons in carbon emissions. Key advancements include alkaline water electrolysis with 64.48% efficiency, multi-tier hydrogen storage systems, and fuel cell applications for vehicles and power generation. Despite these achievements, challenges such as high production costs, infrastructure scalability, and data integration gaps persist. The study underscores the importance of policy support, technological innovation, and international collaboration to overcome these barriers and accelerate the adoption of hydrogen energy in ports worldwide. This research provides actionable insights for port operators and policymakers aiming to balance operational efficiency with sustainability goals. Full article

In response to increasingly stringent emission regulations, low-carbon fuels have received significant attention as sustainable energy sources for internal combustion engines. This study investigates four representative low-carbon fuels, methane, methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia, by systematically summarizing their combustion characteristics and emission profiles, along with a review of existing after-treatment technologies tailored to each fuel type. For methane engines, unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) produced during low-temperature combustion exhibits poor oxidation reactivity, necessitating integration of oxidation strategies such as diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), particulate oxidation catalyst (POC), ozone-assisted oxidation, and zoned catalyst coatings to improve purification efficiency. Methanol combustion under low-temperature conditions tends to produce formaldehyde and other UHCs. Due to the lack of dedicated after-treatment systems, pollutant control currently relies on general-purpose catalysts such as three-way catalyst (TWC), DOC, and POC. Although hydrogen combustion is carbon-free, its high combustion temperature often leads to elevated nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, requiring a combination of optimized hydrogen supply strategies and selective catalytic reduction (SCR)-based denitrification systems. Similarly, while ammonia offers carbon-free combustion and benefits from easier storage and transportation, its practical application is hindered by several challenges, including low ignitability, high toxicity, and notable NOx emissions compared to conventional fuels. Current exhaust treatment for ammonia-fueled engines primarily depends on SCR, selective catalytic reduction-coated diesel particulate filter (SDPF). Emerging NOx purification technologies, such as integrated NOx reduction via hydrogen or ammonia fuel utilization, still face challenges of stability and narrow effective temperatures. Full article

Platinum has emerged as an optimal catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes owing to its high hydrogenation activity, selectivity, and stability. In this study, we report the fabrication of platinum nanoparticles stabilized on a composite support consisting of gum acacia polymer (GAP) and TiO2. It was engineered for the targeted reduction of nitroarenes to arylamines via selective hydrogenation in methanol at ambient temperature. The non-toxic and biocompatible properties of GAP enable it to act as a reducing and stabilizing agent during synthesis. The synthesized nanocatalyst was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Morphological and structural analyses revealed that the fabricated catalyst consisted of minuscule Pt nanoparticles integrated within the GAP framework, accompanied by the corresponding TiO2 nanoparticles. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was employed to ascertain the Pt content. The mild reaction conditions, decent yields, trouble-free workup, and facile separation of the catalyst make this method a clean and practical alternative to nitroreduction. Selective hydrogenation yielded an average arylamine production of 97.6% over five consecutive cycles, demonstrating the stability of the nanocatalyst without detectable leaching. Full article

This review surveys recent advances and emerging prospects in phase-transfer catalysis (PTC) for fuel desulfurization. In response to increasingly stringent environmental regulations, the removal of sulfur from transportation fuels has become imperative for curbing SOx emissions. Conventional hydrodesulfurization (HDS) operates under severe temperature–pressure conditions and displays limited efficacy toward sterically hindered thiophenic compounds, motivating the exploration of non-hydrogen routes such as oxidative desulfurization (ODS). Within ODS, PTC offers distinctive benefits by shuttling reactants across immiscible phases, thereby enhancing reaction rates and selectivity. In particular, PTC enables efficient migration of organosulfur substrates from the hydrocarbon matrix into an aqueous phase where they are oxidized and subsequently extracted. The review first summarizes the deployment of classic PTC systems—quaternary ammonium salts, crown ethers, and related agents—in ODS operations and then delineates the underlying phase-transfer mechanisms, encompassing reaction-controlled, thermally triggered, photo-responsive, and pH-sensitive cycles. Attention is next directed to a new generation of catalysts, including quaternary-ammonium polyoxometalates, imidazolium-substituted polyoxometalates, and ionic-liquid-based hybrids. Their tailored architectures, catalytic performance, and mechanistic attributes are analyzed comprehensively. By incorporating multifunctional supports or rational structural modifications, these systems deliver superior desulfurization efficiency, product selectivity, and recyclability. Despite such progress, commercial deployment is hindered by the following outstanding issues: long-term catalyst durability, continuous-flow reactor design, and full life-cycle cost optimization. Future research should, therefore, focus on elucidating structure–performance relationships, translating batch protocols into robust continuous processes, and performing rigorous environmental and techno-economic assessments to accelerate the industrial adoption of PTC-enabled desulfurization. A simple and rapid precipitation process was successfully employed to prepare silver phosphate (SP, Ag3PO4). Two different phosphate sources: diammonium hydrogen phosphate ((NH4)2HPO4) and dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (K2HPO4) were applied separately as the precursor, obtaining ((NH4)2HPO4) and K2HPO4 derived SP powders, named SP-A or SP-P, respectively. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra pointed out the vibrational characteristics of P–O and O–P–O interactions, confirming the presence of the PO43– functional group for SP. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed that the SP crystallized in a cubic crystal structure. Whereas the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) exposed spherical SP particles. The potentially antibacterial activity of SP-A and SP-P against bacterial Bacillus stratosphericus, yeast Meyerozyma guilliermondii, and fungal Phanerodontia chrysosporium was subsequently investigated. All studied microorganisms were recovered and isolated from the aquatic plant during the tissue culture process. The preliminary result of the antimicrobial test revealed that SP-A has higher antimicrobial activity than SP-P. The superior antimicrobial efficiency of SP-A compared to SP-P may be attributed to its purity and crystallite size, which provide a higher surface area and more active sites. In addition, the presence of potassium-related impurities in SP-P could have negatively affected its antimicrobial performance. These findings suggest that SP holds potential as an antimicrobial agent for maintaining sterility in tissue cultures, particularly in aquatic plant systems. The growth of both B. stratosphericus and M. guilliermondii was suppressed effectively at 30 ppm SP-A, whereas 10 ppm of SP-A can suppress P. chrysosporium development. This present work also highlights the potential of SP at very low concentrations (10–30 ppm) for utilization as an effective antimicrobial agent in tissue culture, compared to a commercial antimicrobial agent, viz., acetic acid, at the same concentration. Icariin (ICA) is widely recognized for its health benefits. In this work, we examined the intermolecular interactions between ICA and proteinase K (PK) via multi-spectroscopic techniques and molecular simulations. The experimental findings revealed that ICA quenched the fluorescence emission of PK by forming a noncovalent complex. Both hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions are essential for the complex’s formation. Then Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), competitive experiments, and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy were adopted to verify the formation of the complex. Molecular docking studies demonstrated that ICA could spontaneously bind to PK by hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, which is consistent with the spectroscopic results. The PK-ICA complex’s dynamic stability was evaluated using a 50 ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The simulation results revealed no significant structural deformation or positional changes throughout the entire simulation period. The complex appears to be rather stable, as seen by the average root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) fluctuations for the host protein in the PK-ICA complex of 1.08 Å and 3.09 Å. These outcomes of molecular simulations suggest that ICA interacts spontaneously and tightly with PK, consistent with the spectroscopic findings. The approach employed in this research presents a pragmatic and advantageous method for examining protein–ligand interactions, as evidenced by the concordance between empirical and theoretical findings. Green hydrogen will play a crucial role in the future of emission reduction in air traffic in the long-term, as it will completely eliminate CO2 emissions and significantly reduce other pollutants such as contrails and nitrogen oxides. Hydrogen offers a promising alternative to kerosene for short- and medium-haul flights, particularly through direct combustion and hydrogen fuel cell technology in new aircraft concepts. Against the background of the immense capital-intensive infrastructure adjustments that are required at airports for this purpose and the simultaneously high future hydrogen demand for the shipping industry, this paper analyses the emission savings potential in Europe if airports near seaports would switch to hydrogen-powered flight connections. Cemented carbides are among the primary materials for tools and wear parts. Today, energy prices and carbon emissions have become key concerns worldwide. Cemented carbides consist of tungsten carbide combined with a binder, typically cobalt, nickel, or more recently, various high-entropy alloys. Producing tungsten carbide involves reducing tungsten oxide, followed by carburization of tungsten at 1400 °C under a hydrogen atmosphere. The tungsten carbide produced is then mixed with the binder, milled to achieve the desired particle size, and granulated to ensure proper flow for pressing and shaping. This study aims to bypass the tungsten carburizing step by mixing tungsten, carbon, and cobalt; shaping the mixture; and then applying reactive sintering, which will convert tungsten into carbide and consolidate the parts. The mixtures were prepared by planetary ball milling for 10 h under different conditions. Tests demonstrated that tungsten carburization successfully occurs during sintering at 1450 °C for 1 h. The samples exhibit a typical cemented carbide microstructure, characterized by prismatic grains with an average size of 0.32 μm. Densification reached 92%, hardness is approximately 1800 HV30, and toughness is 10.9 ± 1.15 MPa·m1/2. Full article

Techno-Economic Analysis of Hydrogen Hybrid Vehicles

Driven by carbon neutrality and peak carbon policies, hydrogen energy, due to its zero-emission and renewable properties, is increasingly being used in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (H-FCVs). However, the high cost and limited durability of H-FCVs hinder large-scale deployment. Hydrogen internal combustion engine hybrid electric vehicles (H-HEVs) are emerging as a viable alternative. Research on the techno-economics of H-HEVs remains limited, particularly in systematic comparisons with H-FCVs. This paper provides a comprehensive comparison of H-FCVs and H-HEVs in terms of total cost of ownership (TCO) and hydrogen consumption while proposing a multi-objective powertrain parameter optimization model. First, a quantitative model evaluates TCO from vehicle purchase to disposal. Second, a global dynamic programming method optimizes hydrogen consumption by incorporating cumulative energy costs into the TCO model. Finally, a genetic algorithm co-optimizes key design parameters to minimize TCO. Results show that with a battery capacity of 20.5 Ah and an H-FC peak power of 55 kW, H-FCV can achieve optimal fuel economy and hydrogen consumption. However, even with advanced technology, their TCO remains higher than that of H-HEVs. H-FCVs can only become cost-competitive if the unit power price of the fuel cell system is less than 4.6 times that of the hydrogen engine system, assuming negligible fuel cell degradation. In the short term, H-HEVs should be prioritized. Their adoption can also support the long-term development of H-FCVs through a complementary relationship. Full article
