Electric motors play a decisive role in electric vehicles by converting electrical energy into mechanical motion across various drivetrain components. However, failures in these motors can interrupt the motor function, with approximately 40% of these failures stemming from bearing issues. Key contributors to bearing degradation include shaft voltage, bearing current, and electric discharge material spalling current, especially in motors powered by inverters or variable frequency drives. This review explores the tribological and vibrational aspects of bearing currents, analyzing their mechanisms and influence on electric motor performance. It addresses the challenges faced by electric vehicles, such as high-speed operation, elevated temperatures, electrical conductivity, and energy efficiency. This study investigates the origins of bearing currents, damage linked to shaft voltage and electric discharge material spalling current, and the effects of lubricant properties on bearing functionality. Moreover, it covers various methods for measuring shaft voltage and bearing current, as well as strategies to alleviate the adverse impacts of bearing currents. This comprehensive analysis aims to shed light on the detrimental effects of bearing currents on the performance and lifespan of electric motors in electric vehicles, emphasizing the importance of tribological considerations for reliable operation and durability. The aim of this study is to address the engineering problem of bearing failure in inverter-fed EV motors by integrating electrical, tribological, and lubrication perspectives. The novelty lies in proposing a conceptual link between lubricant breakdown and damage morphology to guide mitigation strategies. The study tasks include literature review, analysis of bearing current mechanisms and diagnostics, and identification of technological trends. The findings provide insights into lubricant properties and diagnostic approaches that can support industrial solutions. Full article

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) electrospun fiber membranes possess unique micro-nano structures and excellent properties. Adjusting their wettability enables the directional transportation of lubricants. A conventional method for adjusting porosity and wettability involves inducing membrane shrinkage using absolute ethanol and heat treatment. However, the shrinkage response and the corresponding changes in the tensile properties of TPU fiber membranes after induction remain unclear, limiting their applications. Thus, in this study, after being peeled off, the samples were first left to stand at room temperature (RT) for 24 h to release residual stress and stabilize their dimensions, and then treated with dehydrated ethanol at RT and high temperature, respectively, with their shrinkage behaviors observed and recorded. The results showed that TPU nanofiber membranes shrank significantly in absolute ethanol, and the degree of shrinkage was temperature-dependent. The shrinkage rates were 2% and 4% in dehydrated ethanol at room temperature and high temperature, respectively, and heating increased the shrinkage effect by 200%. These findings prove that absolute ethanol causes TPU fibers to shrink, and high temperatures further promote shrinkage. However, although the strong synergistic effect of heat and solvent accelerates shrinkage, it may induce internal structural defects, resulting in the deterioration of mechanical properties. The contraction response induced by anhydrous ethanol stimulation can be used to directionally adjust the local density and modulus of TPU nanofiber membranes, thereby changing the wettability. This approach provides new opportunities for applications in areas such as medium transportation and interface friction reduction in lubrication systems. Full article

This study presents a detailed experimental comparison of the rotordynamic and thermal performance of automotive turbochargers supported by two distinct hydrodynamic bearing configurations: fully floating ring bearings (FFRBs) and semi-floating ring bearings (SFRBs). While both designs are widely used in commercial turbochargers, they exhibit significantly different dynamic behaviors due to differences in ring motion and fluid film interaction. A cold air-driven test rig was employed to assess vibration and temperature characteristics across a range of controlled lubricant conditions. The test matrix included oil supply pressures from 2 bar (g) to 4 bar (g) and temperatures between 30 °C and 70 °C. Rotor speeds reached up to 200 krpm (thousands of revolutions per minute), and data were collected using a high-speed data acquisition system, triaxial accelerometers, and infrared (IR) thermal imaging. Rotor vibration was characterized through waterfall and Bode plots, while jump speeds and thermal profiles were analyzed to evaluate the onset and severity of instability. The results demonstrate that the FFRB configuration is highly sensitive to oil supply parameters, exhibiting strong subsynchronous instabilities and hysteresis during acceleration–deceleration cycles. In contrast, the SFRB configuration consistently provided superior vibrational stability and reduced sensitivity to lubricant conditions. Changes in lubricant supply conditions induced a jump speed variation in floating ring bearing (FRB) turbochargers that was approximately 3.47 times larger than that experienced by semi-floating ring bearing (SFRB) turbochargers. Furthermore, IR images and oil outlet temperature data confirm that the FFRB system experiences greater heat generation and thermal gradients, consistent with higher energy dissipation through viscous shear. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of both bearing types under realistic high-speed conditions and highlights the advantages of the SFRB configuration in improving turbocharger reliability, thermal performance, and noise suppression. The findings support the application of SFRBs in high-performance automotive systems where mechanical stability and reduced frictional losses are critical. Full article

WS2 coating, as a solid lubricating material, plays a significant role in the lubrication of rotating components in spacecraft. During the launch process, however, spacecraft are exposed to high-temperature and humid atmospheric environments, which can lead to oxidative failure in the coating, thereby limiting its engineering applications. By doping with B elements, B/WS2 was successfully prepared as a composite coating. The results demonstrate that the fabricated coating exhibits excellent high-temperature tribological performance in atmospheric environments. The mechanism through which B doping improves the high-temperature friction and wear properties of the WS2 composite coating was revealed through high-temperature friction and wear tests. With the incorporation of B elements, the average friction coefficient of the coating was 0.071, and the wear rate was 7.63 × 10−7 mm3·N−1·m−1, with the wear mechanisms identified as abrasive wear and spalling. Due to high-temperature oxidation, thermal decomposition effects, and the formation of WB4 during sputtering, the wear resistance and anti-plastic deformation capability of the coating were further improved. Compared to room-temperature test conditions, the B/WS2 composite coating at different high temperatures exhibited superior friction coefficients and wear rates. Notably, at 150 °C, the average friction coefficient was as low as 0.015, and the wear forms were abrasive wear and adhesive wear. Full article

Worm gears are used in various mechanical constructions, especially in heavy industrial plants, where they are exposed to high operating loads, large torques, and high temperatures, particularly in conditions where it is necessary for the input and output shafts to be at an angle of 90°. Regarding tribological optimization, the application of carbon nanotube in lubricants can lead to significant improvements in the performance characteristics of worm gears, both in terms of increasing efficiency and reducing the coefficient of friction and wear, as well as minimizing mechanical losses, noise, and vibrations. The objective of this study is for the research results, through the use of oil with varying percentages of carbon nanotube additives (CNTs), to contribute to the optimization of worm gears by improving efficiency, extending service life, and reducing vibrations—both within the gearbox itself and within the industrial facility where it is applied. The research methodology involved laboratory testing of a worm gear using lubricants with varying concentrations of carbon nanotube. During the experiment, measurements of efficiency, vibrations, and noise levels were conducted in order to determine the impact of these additives on the operational performance of the gear system. The main contribution of this research is reflected in the experimental confirmation that the use of lubricants with optimized concentrations of carbon nanotube significantly enhances the operational performance of worm gears by increasing efficiency and reducing vibrations and noise, thereby enabling tribological optimization that contributes to improved reliability, extended service life, and enhanced workplace ergonomics under demanding industrial conditions. Furthermore, experimental investigations have shown that the efficiency of the gearbox increases from an initial value of 0.42–0.65, which represents an increase of 54%, the vibrations of the worm gear decrease from an initial value of 5.83–2.56 mm/s2, which represents an decrease of 56%, while the noise was reduced from 87.5 to 77.2 dB, which represents an decrease of 12% with the increasing percentage of carbon nanotube additives in the lubricant, up to a maximum value of 1%. However, beyond this experimentally determined threshold, a decrease in the efficiency of the tested worm gearbox, as well as an increase in noise and vibration levels was recorded. Full article

Nickel-based superalloy Hastelloy C276 is widely used in high-performance industries due to its strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability. However, these same properties pose substantial challenges in machining, resulting in high tool wear, surface defects, and dimensional inaccuracies. This study investigates methods to enhance machining performance and surface quality by evaluating the tribological behavior of TiSiN/TiAlN-coated carbide inserts under six cooling and lubrication conditions: dry, MQL with coconut oil, Cryo-LN2, Cryo-LCO2, MQL–Cryo-LN2, and MQL–Cryo-LCO2. Open-slot finishing was performed at constant cutting parameters, and key indicators such as cutting zone temperature, tool wear, surface roughness, chip morphology, and microhardness were analyzed. The hybrid MQL–Cryo-LN2 approach significantly outperformed other methods, reducing cutting zone temperature, tool wear, and surface roughness by 116.4%, 94.34%, and 76.11%, respectively, compared to dry machining. SEM and EDS analyses confirmed abrasive, oxidative, and adhesive wear as the dominant mechanisms. The MQL–Cryo-LN2 strategy also lowered microhardness, in contrast to a 39.7% increase observed under dry conditions. These findings highlight the superior performance of hybrid MQL–Cryo-LN2 in improving machinability, offering a promising solution for precision-driven applications. Full article

Friction leads to substantial energy losses and wear in mechanical systems. This study explores the tribological potential of the high-temperature superconductor precursor Y2BaCuO5 (Y211), synthesized via chemical co-precipitation, as a novel additive to PAO6 base oil. A 0.3 wt.% Y211/PAO6 lubricant (CD) was formulated using ultrasonic dispersion. Tribological performance was evaluated using a custom end-face tribometer (steel-on-iron) under varying loads (100–500 N) and speeds (300–500 rpm), comparing CD to neat PAO6. The results indicate that the Y211 additive consistently reduced the coefficient of friction (COF) relative to neat PAO6, maintaining a stable value around ~0.1. However, its effectiveness was strongly load-dependent: a significant friction reduction was observed at 100 N, while the benefit diminished at higher loads (>200 N), with the COF peaking around 200 N. Rotational speed exerted minimal influence. Compared with neat PAO6, the inclusion of 0.3 wt.% Y211 resulted in a reduction in the coefficient of friction by approximately 50% under low-load conditions (100 N), with COF values decreasing from 0.1 to 0.045. Wear depth measurements also revealed a reduction of over 30%, supporting the additive’s anti-wear efficacy. Y211 demonstrates potential as a friction-reducing additive, particularly under low loads, but its high-load performance limitations warrant further optimization and mechanistic studies. This highlights a novel tribological application for Y211. The objective of this study is to evaluate the tribological effectiveness of Y2BaCuO5 (Y211) as a lubricant additive, investigate its load-dependent friction behavior, and explore its feasibility as a multifunctional additive leveraging its superconductive precursor structure. Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films are widely valued for their excellent mechanical strength and low friction, but their performance significantly degrades at elevated temperatures, limiting practical applications in aerospace environments. In this work, we aimed to enhance the high-temperature tribological behavior of a-C:H films through controlled silicon (Si) doping. A series of a-C:H:Si films with varying Si contents were fabricated via direct current magnetron sputtering, and their microstructure, mechanical properties, and friction behavior were systematically evaluated from room temperature up to 400 °C. Results show that moderate Si doping (8.3 at.%) substantially enhances hardness and wear resistance, while enabling ultralow friction (as low as 0.0034) at 400 °C. This superior performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of transfer layer formation, preferential Si oxidation, and tribo-induced graphitization. This study provides new insights into the high-temperature lubrication mechanisms of Si-doped a-C:H films and demonstrates the critical role of Si content optimization, highlighting a viable strategy for extending the thermal stability and lifespan of solid-lubricating films. The demands of the green economy necessitate modern polymer materials that are not only environmentally friendly but also durable and capable of long service life. Bio-based polylactide (PLA) polyesters have gained significant traction in various industrial markets; however, their application in specialized sectors is hindered by high brittleness. This study extensively examines the effects of 1–5% of synthetically obtained tetracyclosiloxane (CS) and octaspherosilicate (OSS) derivatives with methacrylate (MA) and trimethoxysilyl (TMOS) groups as functional modifiers for PLA. The research provides a detailed characterization of PLA/CS and PLA/OSS materials, including a comparative analysis of mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, and dynamic resistance. Notably, incorporating 5% CS-2MA-2TMOS into PLA resulted in a remarkable 104% increase in impact resistance. The study further evaluates the influence of these modifications on thermal properties (DSC, TGA), heat deflection temperature (HDT), and surface character (WCA). The miscibility between the organosilicon additives and PLA was assessed using oscillatory rheometry and SEM-EDS analysis. The melt-rheology analysis explained the mechanisms behind the interaction between the CS and OSS additives with the PLA matrix, highlighting their lubricating effects on the melt flow behavior. The study was complemented by XRD structural analysis and verification of the structure of PLA-based materials by optical microscopy and SEM analysis, demonstrating a plasticizing effect and uniform distribution of the modifiers. The findings strongly suggest that, even at low concentrations, organosilicon additives serve as effective impact modifiers for PLA. Full article

This study presents a bioinspired phase-change transparent flexible heater (PTFH) for programmable droplet manipulation under ultralow voltage. By embedding a self-junctioned copper nanowire network into paraffin-infused, porous PVDF-HFP gel matrices, the PTFH achieves rapid, non-contact, and reversible control of microdroplet mobility. The PTFH can be bent or tailored into diverse shapes (e.g., V/X configurations), enabling multidirectional droplet transport. Under ultralow voltage actuation (<1 V), the surface of PTFH melts the phase-change lubricant within 2 s, switching surface wettability from high adhesion (Wenzel state) to low adhesion (SLIPS state). By combining Laplace pressure and temperature gradients (up to 22 °C/mm), drive droplets at ~2.0 mm/s over distances of ~13.9 mm. Programmable droplet coalescence, curved-surface transport, and a microreactor design for batch reactions were also demonstrated. The PTFH exhibits excellent transparency (89% when activated), mechanical flexibility, and cyclic stability, offering a versatile platform for microreactors, microengines, and smart windows. This study develops novel superhydrophobic UHMWPE/PTFE/PVA composites via hot-pressing sintering to achieve ultra-low friction and enhanced wear resistance. The ternary system synergistically combines UHMWPE’s mechanical stability, PTFE’s lubricity, and PVA’s dispersion/binding capability. Results show PTFE disrupts UHMWPE crystallization, reducing melting temperature by 2.77 °C and enabling energy dissipation. All composites exhibit hydrophobicity, with optimal formulations (UPP3/UPP4) reaching superhydrophobicity. Tribological testing under varied loads and frequencies reveals low friction, where UPP1 achieves a COF of 0.043 and wear rate below 1.5 × 10−5 mm3/(N·m) under low-load conditions. UHMWPE oxidative degradation forming carboxylic acids at the interface (C=O at 289 eV, C–O at 286 eV). Formation of tungsten oxides (WO3/WO2), carbides (WC), and transfer films on steel counterparts. A four-step tribochemical reaction pathway is established. PVA promotes uniform transfer films, while PTFE lamellar peeling and UHMWPE chain stability enable sustained lubrication. Carbon-rich stratified accumulations under high-load/speed increase COF via abrasive effects. The composites demonstrate exceptional biocompatibility and provide a scalable solution for biomedical and industrial tribological applications. Full article

In high-temperature, high-pressure, and corrosive industrial environments, frictional wear of metallic components stands as a critical determinant governing the long-term operational reliability of mechanical systems. To address the challenge of traditional lubricating coating failure under a broad temperature range (−50 to 500 °C), this study developed a phosphate-based composite lubricating coating. Through air-spraying technology and orthogonal experimental optimization, the optimal formulation was determined as follows: binder/filler ratio = 6:4, 5% graphite, 15% MoS2, and 10% aluminum powder. Experimental results demonstrated that at 500 °C, the coating forms an Al–O–P cross-linked network structure, with MoS2 oxidation generating MoO3 and aluminum powder transforming into Al2O3, significantly enhancing density and oxidation resistance. Friction tests revealed that the composite coating achieves a friction coefficient as low as 0.12 at room temperature with a friction time of 260 min. At 500 °C, the friction coefficient stabilizes at 0.24, providing 40 min of effective protection. This technology not only resolves the high-temperature instability of traditional coatings but also ensures an environmentally friendly preparation process with no harmful emissions, offering a technical solution for the protection of high-temperature equipment such as thermal power plant boiler tubes and petrochemical reactors. This study investigates the influence of the HfB2 content and sintering method on the mechanical behavior of Ti2AlC-based composites. Compositions containing 0–10 wt.% HfB2 are processed via conventional and microwave sintering at 1200 °C for 30 min. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses have confirmed the formation of the Ti2AlC and HfB2 phases, whereas the TiC phase is predominantly observed in samples processed by conventional sintering. The highest hardness (~475 HV) and compressive strength (~450 MPa) are that of the composite containing 5 wt.% HfB2 associated with a porosity reduction of approximately 10%. These improvements are attributed to the enhanced densification and microstructural refinement achieved via microwave processing. The findings underscore the potential of HfB2 addition and microwave sintering in tailoring the structure–property relationships of the Ti2AlC composites, enabling applications at high-temperature filtration, thermal barriers, and self-lubricating components. Titanium nitride (TiN) is a widely used industrial hard coating material, known for its excellent hardness and chemical stability. However, its relatively high coefficient of friction (COF) often leads to interfacial heat accumulation and adhesive wear during service, limiting its applicability in high-temperature tribological environments. To enhance its tribological performance, a TiN–WS2 soft–hard composite coating was fabricated on cemented carbide substrates using reactive co-sputtering magnetron deposition. By adjusting the sputtering parameters and target power ratio, a synergistic deposition of the hard (TiN) and lubricating (WS2) phases was achieved and compared with a pure TiN coating. The results revealed that the incorporation of WS2 significantly reduced the COF at both room temperature (25 °C) and an elevated temperature (200 °C), with the average values decreasing from 0.61 to 0.39 at 25 °C and from 0.53 to 0.36 at 200 °C. A white light interferometry analysis showed that the TiN–WS2 coating exhibited narrower wear tracks and less surface damage than TiN at elevated temperatures, demonstrating superior friction-reducing and wear-resistant capabilities. In terms of mechanical properties, the composite coating showed a reduction in the hardness, the reduced elastic modulus (Er), and the adhesion strength by 27.3%, 19.8%, and 9.5%, respectively, compared to pure TiN. These findings indicate that the introduction of a quantitatively controlled lubricating WS2 phase allows for a balance between nanoscale hardness and wear resistance, offering promising potential for engineering applications under complex working conditions. Hastelloy is widely used in the manufacturing of high-temperature components in the aerospace industry because of its high strength and corrosion-resistant physical properties, as well as its ability to maintain excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures. However, with developments in science and technology, the amount of available components for use in high-temperature and corrosive environments is increasing, their structures are becoming more complex and varied, and requirements with regard to the surface quality of the components has also become more stringent. The integration of cold plasma (CP) and nano-lubricant minimum quantity lubrication (NMQL), within a multi-physics coupling-assisted micro-grinding process (CPNMQL), presents a promising strategy to overcome this bottleneck. In this paper, micro-grinding of Hastelloy C-276 was performed under dry, CP, NMQL, and CPNMQL conditions, respectively. Contact angle testing, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, and nano-scratch experiments were used to investigate the mechanism of CPNMQL and to compare the micro-milling performance under different cooling and lubrication conditions employing various characteristics such as grinding temperature, surface roughness, and 3D surface profile. The results showed that at different micro-grinding depths, the micro-grinding temperature and surface roughness were significantly reduced under CP, NMQL, and CPNMQL conditions compared to dry friction. Among them, CPNMQL showed the best performance, with 53.4% and 54.7% reductions in temperature and surface roughness, respectively, compared to the dry condition. Full article
