The continuous increase in Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in Greece’s electricity system has led to growing energy curtailment due to limited grid capacity, especially in high-production regions. According to recent data, more than 200 GWh of clean energy was curtailed in a single quarter in 2024, highlighting the urgent need for effective storage solutions. Curtailment represents a growing system level challenge, but it also creates an opportunity to convert surplus renewable electricity into green hydrogen through electrolysis. This study quantifies the hydrogen production potential of curtailed RES electricity in four Greek regions, Peloponnese, Crete, Thrace, and Western Macedonia, and evaluates alternative storage pathways under harmonized techno-economic assumptions. A scenario-based framework is developed using regional RES capacity, curtailment estimates, electrolyzer efficiency, hydrogen conversion factors, and indicative storage cost ranges. The analysis compares pressurized tank storage, underground storage, and hybrid configurations, while also estimating avoided CO2 emissions from the substitution of grey hydrogen. The results indicate substantial regional variation. The Peloponnese exhibits the highest annual hydrogen potential, followed by Crete, Thrace, and Western Macedonia, while each region presents different infrastructure constraints and deployment roles. Mainland regions with access to geological storage show lower indicative hydrogen costs than island systems, where storage and export constraints increase costs. The findings show that curtailed renewable electricity can function as a low-carbon feedstock for hydrogen production in Greece, supporting grid flexibility, regional decarbonization, and the gradual development of hydrogen hubs under differentiated regional strategies. Fuel cell technologies are increasingly investigated as alternatives to conventional auxiliary diesel generators in order to enhance shipboard energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study presents a unified and uncertainty-driven system-level assessment of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) systems operating as auxiliary power sources on a 200 m bulk carrier. Both technologies are evaluated under identical vessel characteristics, operating profiles, auxiliary load levels (360–600 kW), and cost assumptions, and are benchmarked directly against a conventional three–diesel-generator configuration. A modular numerical framework is developed to model propulsion–auxiliary interactions for ship speeds between 10 and 14 knots. SOFC systems are assessed using grey, bio-derived, and green natural gas pathways, while PEMFC systems are examined under grey, blue, and green hydrogen supply routes. Performance indicators include annual fuel consumption, carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reduction, net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), payback period (PBP), and marginal abatement cost (MAC). Economic uncertainty is explicitly embedded in the framework through Monte Carlo simulation, where fuel prices (±20%) and capital costs are sampled across defined ranges, generating probabilistic distributions rather than single deterministic estimates. This uncertainty-centred approach enables assessment of robustness, downside risk, and probability of profitability. Results show that replacing a single operating 600 kW diesel generator with fuel cell systems reduces auxiliary fuel energy demand by 25–35% for SOFC and approximately 15–25% for PEMFC relative to the diesel benchmark. Annual CO2 reductions range from 1.1 to 1.3 kt for SOFC systems and 1.8–2.8 kt for PEMFC configurations. Under grey fuel pathways, median NPVs reach approximately 2–4.5 M$ for SOFC and 9–17 M$ for PEMFC as load increases, with IRRs exceeding 15% and 30%, respectively. Transitional pathways exhibit narrower margins, while renewable pathways remain more sensitive to fuel price variability. The findings demonstrate that fuel pathway cost dominates lifecycle outcomes under uncertainty and that hydrogen-based PEMFC systems exhibit the strongest economic resilience within the examined market ranges. The framework provides structured, uncertainty-aware decision support and establishes a foundation for integration into model-based systems engineering (MBSE) environments for early stage ship energy system design. Hydrogen is increasingly recognized as a key vector for sustainable energy transitions, deep decarbonization, and enhanced energy security. This review evaluates major hydrogen types, grey, blue, and green, through a comparative assessment of production pathways, cost structures, technological maturity, and market readiness, with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Grey hydrogen, while currently dominant due to established fossil-based infrastructure and low costs, is associated with high carbon emissions and climate-related risks. Blue hydrogen offers a transitional pathway via carbon capture and storage but faces constraints in SSA from high capital requirements, limited CCS infrastructure, and methane leakage. Green hydrogen, produced through renewable-powered electrolysis, represents the most sustainable long-term option, aligned with global net-zero goals and SSA’s abundant solar and wind resources, despite higher upfront costs. Synthesizing recent techno-economic, policy, and regional studies, the review highlights that prioritizing green hydrogen deployment supported by enabling policy frameworks, targeted investments, and capacity building is critical for unlocking SSA’s hydrogen potential, promoting low-carbon development, and advancing sustainable energy transitions across the region. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are considered to be a promising solution for clean energy conversion in hydrogen electric vehicles. Accurate voltage prediction is crucial for designing efficient energy management and control strategies. While deep neural networks have shown good potential in modeling PEMFCs, the role of optimization algorithms and training performance criteria in achieving accurate voltage predictions remains unclear. This research aims to carry out a comprehensive comparative study using three popular optimization algorithms and different performance criteria including prediction accuracy, convergence speed, and training stability. A real experimental dataset for a Nexa PEMFC system has been used to train and evaluate different models of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to find out which optimization algorithm and performance criteria are best for efficient modeling of PEMFCs under varying operating conditions. The results of this study are analyzed through a comparative evaluation of different metaheuristic optimization algorithms applied within a unified ANN training framework for PEMFC voltage prediction. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) provides the highest voltage prediction accuracy and robust convergence behavior, whereas Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) achieves the fastest convergence with reduced computational time. This paper analyzes the functional feasibility and strategic value of hybrid hydrogen storage and photovoltaic (PV) energy systems at isolated areas, specifically at Egypt’s Shalateen station. The paper is significant as it formulates a solution to the energy independence coupled with economic feasibility issue in regions where the basic energy infrastructure is non-existent or limited. Through the integration of a portfolio of advanced optimization algorithms—Differential Evolution (DE), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA), Pattern Search, Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), and Simulated Annealing—the paper evaluates the performance of two scenarios. The first evaluates the PV system in the absence of hydrogen production to demonstrate how system parameters are optimized by Pattern Search and PSO to achieve a minimum Cost of Energy (COE) of 0.544 USD/kWh. The second extends the system to include hydrogen production, which becomes important to ensure energy continuity during solar irradiation-free months like those during winter months. In this scenario, the same methods of optimization enhance the COE to 0.317 USD/kWh, signifying the economic value of integrating hydrogen storage. The findings underscore the central role played by hybrid renewable energy systems in ensuring high resilience and sustainability of supplies in far-flung districts, where continued enhancement by means of optimization is needed to realize maximum environmental and technological gains. The paper offers a futuristic model towards sustainable, dependable energy solutions key to the energy independence of the future in such challenging environments. Full article

Zirconium and its alloys are widely used in nuclear power engineering due to their favorable physical and mechanical properties and their low thermal-neutron absorption cross-section. Their high corrosion resistance in aqueous and steam environments at elevated temperatures is essential for the reliable operation of fuel assemblies and is associated with the formation of a stable, compact ZrO2 oxide layer. However, under reactor conditions, the presence of hydrogen, iodine and other fission products can reduce corrosion resistance, making detailed corrosion assessment necessary. Manufacturing technology, alongside alloy composition, also plays a decisive role in determining corrosion behavior. This study presents corrosion test results for a Zr-1%Nb alloy processed under thermomechanical conditions corresponding to rolling in a special type of three-roll skew rolling–Radial-Shear Rolling (RSR). The applied rolling technology ensured the formation of a pronounced ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure in the near-surface layers, with an average grain size below 0.6 µm. EBSD and TEM observations revealed a largely equiaxed microstructure with refined grains and increased grain boundary density. The corrosion testing was performed in high-temperature steam vessels at 400 °C and 10.3 MPa for 72, 336, 720 and 1440 h. The results demonstrate that RSR processing is an efficient alternative to conventional multi-pass normal bar rolling with vacuum heat treatments, allowing a significant reduction in processing steps and eliminating the need for expensive tooling and intermediate thermal or chemical treatments. Bars manufactured using this method meet the ASTM B351 requirements. The specific weight gain did not exceed 22 mg/dm2 after 72 h and 34.5 mg/dm2 after 336 h. After 1440 h, the samples exhibited a continuous, uniform dark-grey oxide layer with an average thickness below 5.3 µm. Full article

Background: Melasma is a chronic hyperpigmentation disorder, often therapy-resistant. Minimally invasive combinations of chemical stimulators and serums show promise. This study evaluated trichloroacetic acid stabilized with hydrogen peroxide and kojic acid, plus a serum with niacinamide, tranexamic acid, lactoferrin, ferulic acid, alpha-lipoic acid, and physic acid. Methods: Ten female volunteers with clinically diagnosed melasma underwent six treatment sessions. Each procedure involved application of the chemical stimulator followed by the serum, with strict photoprotection advised. Clinical improvement was assessed using the modified Melasma Area and Severity Index (mMASI) by three independent experts. Objective analysis of pigmentation and texture was performed with photographic documentation processed by the Grey Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM), measuring contrast and homogeneity in selected facial regions. Results: After six treatments, significant improvement was observed. Mean mMASI scores decreased by 62.3% after 2 weeks and 62.9% after 8 weeks. GLCM confirmed pigmentation reduction, showing decreased contrast and increased homogeneity across all regions, with the chin responding best. Correlation analysis indicated a positive trend between mMASI reduction and contrast changes. No serious adverse events or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation were reported. Conclusions: The combined protocol significantly reduced melasma hyperpigmentation both clinically and objectively. GLCM analysis complements traditional scales and may provide a valuable quantitative tool for future research. Full article

The multi-energy flow coordination optimization of the self-sufficient hydrogen energy park is becoming a research focus. However, without explicit consideration of tank car, the optimization remains incomplete, thereby undermining practical applicability. In this paper, a Dynamic Adaptive Grey Wolf Optimization (DA-GWO) algorithm is proposed for self-consistent multi-energy flow coordination optimization, considering hydrogen energy-based tank cars in hydrogen railway energy parks. First, a foundational model of the hydrogen-based railway energy system was constructed that integrates green non-dispatchable units such as wind power and photovoltaics, as well as dispatchable units such as fuel cells, gas boilers, and cogeneration units. Given the diversity and complexity of in-service hydrogen railway tank cars, a probabilistic model of daily charging behaviour was constructed using a Monte Carlo method to simulate real-world operating conditions of tank cars, thereby enhancing the reliability of the hydrogen-powered railway model. Considering the diverse and complex units in the self-consistent hydrogen energy park for hydrogen-powered railways, a DA-GWO algorithm was constructed for the multi-energy flow optimization. Through a self-adaptive parameter adjustment, the algorithm’s global optimization performance is improved. Finally, the model parameters were further adjusted with data from a coastal Chinese city, and the optimization experimental tests were conducted to validate the proposed method. From the results, the proposed method can save at least 6.7% cost compared with the grey wolf optimization method and the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) optimization method. Full article

With growing global demand for sustainable decarbonization, hydrogen energy systems have emerged as a key pillar in achieving carbon neutrality. This study assesses the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction efficiency of Republic of Korea’s hydrogen ecosystem from a life-cycle perspective, focusing on production and utilization stages. Using empirical data—including the national hydrogen supply structure, fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) deployment, and hydrogen power generation records, the analysis compares hydrogen-based systems with conventional fossil fuel systems. Results show that current hydrogen production methods, mainly by-product and reforming-based hydrogen, emit an average of 6.31 kg CO2-eq per kg H2, providing modest GHG benefits over low-carbon fossil fuels but enabling up to a 77% reduction when replacing high-emission sources like anthracite. In the utilization phase, grey hydrogen-fueled stationary fuel cells emit more GHGs than the national grid. By contrast, FCEVs demonstrate a 58.2% GHG reduction compared to internal combustion vehicles, with regional variability. Importantly, this study omits the distribution phase (storage and transport) due to data heterogeneity and a lack of reliable datasets, which limits the comprehensiveness of the LCA. Future research should incorporate sensitivity or scenario-based analyses such as comparisons between pipeline transport and liquefied hydrogen transport to better capture distribution-phase impacts. The study concludes that the environmental benefit of hydrogen systems is highly dependent on production pathways, end-use sectors, and regional conditions. Strategic deployment of green hydrogen, regional optimization, and the explicit integration of distribution and storage in future assessments are essential to enhancing hydrogen’s contribution to national carbon neutrality goals. The western hemlock looper, Lambdina fiscellaria lugubrosa (Hulst) is a destructive defoliator of coniferous forests and a major cause of economic losses in forestry. A novel and efficient stereoselective synthesis of the sex pheromone of the western hemlock looper (1, 2 and 3) has been successfully achieved. The synthetic strategy integrates several key transformations, including Evans’ chiral auxiliaries, Grignard cross-coupling, hydroboration–oxidation, sulfone alkylation, and hydrogenation, providing an efficient and scalable approach for sex pheromone production. The three synthesized pheromone components were subsequently tested for their ability to attract Semiothisa cinerearia (Bremer & Grey) using both Y-tube and cage bioassays. Notably, compound 1 exhibited a cross-species attractive effect on S. cinerearia, a species that had not previously been documented to respond to the pheromone of L. fiscellaria lugubrosa. This discovery underscores the potential for cross-species attraction, broadens our understanding of pheromone specificity, and emphasizes the value of stereoselectively synthesized pheromones as molecular tools for cross-species pest monitoring and integrated pest management. Hydrogen-based mobility solutions could offer viable technology for sustainable transportation. Current research often examines single pathways, leaving broader comparisons unexplored. This comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) evaluates which vehicle type achieves the best environmental performance when using hydrogen from grey, blue, and green production pathways, the three dominant carbon-intensity variants currently deployed. This study examines seven distinct vehicle configurations that rely on hydrogen-derived energy sources across various propulsion systems: a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (H2FCEV), hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicle (H2ICEV), methanol flexible fuel vehicle (MeOH FFV), ethanol flexible vehicle (EtOH FFV), Fischer-Tropsch (FT) diesel internal combustion vehicle (FTD ICEV) and renewable compressed natural gas vehicle (RNGV). Via both grey and blue hydrogen production, H2 FCEVs are the best options from the viewpoint of GWP, but surprisingly, in the green category, FT-fueled vehicles take over both first and second place, as they produce nearly half the lifetime carbon emissions of purely hydrogen-fueled vehicles. RNGV also emerges as a promising alternative, offering optimal engine properties in a system similar to H2ICEVs, enabling parallel development and technological upgrades. These findings not only highlight viable low-carbon pathways but also provide clear guidance for future targeted, detailed, applied research. Full article

Although wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP) is an effective technique for reducing the emissions of merchant ships, the best fuel type for complementing WASP remains an open question. This study presents a new original life cycle assessment method for ship fuels that uses a validated ship performance prediction model and actual operation conditions for a WASP ship. As a case study, the method is used to evaluate the fuel consumption and environmental impact of different fuels for a WASP ship operating in the Baltic Sea. Using a novel in-house-developed platform for predicting ship performance under actual operation conditions using hindcast data, the engine and fuel tank were sized while accounting for fluctuating weather conditions over a year. The results showed significant variation in the required fuel tank capacity across fuel types, with liquid hydrogen requiring the largest volume, followed by LNG and ammonia. Additionally, a well-to-wake life cycle assessment revealed that dual-fuel engines using green ammonia and hydrogen exhibit the lowest global warming potential (GWP), while grey ammonia and blue hydrogen have substantially higher GWP levels. Notably, NOx, SOx, and particulate matter emissions were consistently lower for dual-fuel and liquid natural gas scenarios than for single-fuel marine diesel oil engines. These results underscore the importance of selecting both an appropriate fuel type and production method to optimize environmental performance. This study advocates for transitioning to greener fuel options derived from sustainable pathways for WASP ships to mitigate the environmental impact of maritime operations and support global climate change efforts. The biological production of hydrogen offers a renewable and potentially sustainable alternative for clean energy generation. In Northeast Brazil, depleted oil reservoirs (DORs) present a unique opportunity to integrate biotechnology with existing fossil fuel infrastructure. These subsurface formations, rich in residual hydrocarbons (RH) and native H2 producing microbiota, can be repurposed as bioreactors for hydrogen production. This process, often referred to as “Gold Hydrogen”, involves the in situ microbial conversion of RH into H2, typically via dark fermentation, and is distinct from green, blue, or grey hydrogen due to its reliance on indigenous subsurface biota and RH. Strategies include nutrient modulation and chemical additives to stimulate native hydrogenogenic genera (Clostridium, Petrotoga, Thermotoga) or the injection of improved inocula. While this approach has potential environmental benefits, such as integrated CO2 sequestration and minimized surface disturbance, it also presents risks, namely the production of CO2 and H2S, and fracturing, which require strict monitoring and mitigation. Although infrastructure reuse reduces capital expenditures, achieving economic viability depends on overcoming significant technical, operational, and biotechnological challenges. If widely applied, this model could help decarbonize the energy sector, repurpose legacy infrastructure, and support the global transition toward low-carbon technologies. Full article

In this study, we selected the production processes and main products of three typical chemical enterprises in Shanghai, namely SH Petrochemical (part of the oil-refining sector), SK Ethylene, and HS Chlor-Alkali, to quantitatively assess the synergistic effects across technology, policy, and emission mechanisms. The localized air pollutant levels and greenhouse gas emissions of the three enterprises were calculated. The synergistic effects between the end-of-pipe emission reductions for air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions were analyzed using the pollutant reduction synergistic and cross-elasticity coefficients, including technology comparisons (e.g., acrylonitrile gas incineration (AOGI) technology vs. traditional flare). Based on these data, we used the SimaPro software and the CML-IA model to conduct a life cycle environmental impact assessment regarding the production and upstream processes of their unit products. By combining the life cycle method and the scenario simulation method, we predicted the trends in the environmental impacts of the three chemical enterprises after the implementation of low-carbon development policies in the chemical industry in 2030. We also quantified the synergistic effects of localized air pollutant and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions within the low-carbon development scenario by using cross-elasticity coefficients based on life cycle environmental impacts. The research results show that, for every ton of air pollutant reduced through end-of-pipe treatment measures, the HS Chlor-Alkali enterprise would increase its maximum CO2 emissions, amounting to about 80 tons. For SK Ethylene, the synergistic coefficient for VOC reduction and CO2 emissions when using AOGI thermal incineration technology is superior to that for traditional flare thermal incineration. The activities of the three enterprises had an impact on several environmental indicators, particularly the fossil fuel resource depletion potential, accounting for 69.48%, 53.94%, and 34.23% of their total environmental impact loads, respectively. The scenario simulations indicate that, in a low-carbon development scenario, the overall environmental impact loads of SH Petrochemical (refining sector), SK Ethylene, and HS Chlor-Alkali would decrease by 3~5%. This result suggests that optimizing the upstream power structure, using “green hydrogen” instead of “grey hydrogen” in hydrogenation units within refining enterprises, and reducing the consumption of electricity and steam in the production processes of ethylene and chlor-alkali are effective measures in reducing carbon emissions in the chemical industry. The quantification of the synergies based on life cycle environmental impacts revealed that there are relatively strong synergies for air pollutant and GHG emission reductions in the oil-refining industry, while the chlor-alkali industry has the weakest synergies. This scoping review investigates the digital transition of critical energy infrastructure (CEI) in maritime ports, which are increasingly vital as energy hubs amid global decarbonisation efforts. Recognising the growing role of ports in integrating offshore renewables, hydrogen, and LNG systems, the study examines how digital technologies (such as automation, IoT, and AI) support the resilience, efficiency, and sustainability of port-based CEI. A multifaceted search strategy was implemented to identify relevant academic and grey literature. The search was performed between January 2025 and 30 April 2025. The strategy focused on databases such as Scopus. Due to limitations encountered in retrieving sufficient, directly relevant academic papers from databases alone, the search strategy was systematically expanded to include grey literature such as reports, policy documents, and technical papers from authoritative industry, governmental, and international organisations. Employing Arksey and O’Malley’s framework and PRISMA-ScR (scoping review) guidelines, the review synthesises insights from 62 academic and grey literature sources to address five core research questions relating to the current state, challenges, importance, and future directions of digital CEI in ports. Literature distribution of articles varies across continents, with Europe contributing the highest number of publications (53%), Asia (24%) and North America (11%), while Africa and Oceania account for only 3% of the publications. Findings reveal significant regional disparities in digital maturity, fragmented governance structures, and underutilisation of digital systems. While smart port technologies offer operational gains and support predictive maintenance, their effectiveness is constrained by siloed strategies, resistance to collaboration, and skill gaps. The study highlights a need for holistic digital transformation frameworks, cross-border cooperation, and tailored approaches to address these challenges. The review provides a foundation for future empirical work and policy development aimed at securing and optimising maritime port energy infrastructure in line with global sustainability targets.
