Camellia vietnamensis grows in a unique tropical environment, and its seed oil has a rich aroma. The content of unsaturated fatty acids in C. vietnamensis oil is up to 90%, which can regulate human lipid metabolism and prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Compared with olive oil, C. vietnamensis oil has a higher content of unsaturated fatty acids. This study used eleven C. vietnamensis cultivars cultivated on Hainan Island. Among the 11 cultivars, “Boao 1” had fruits with the largest vertical diameter of 45.05 mm, while “Haida 1” had fruits with the largest horizontal diameter, single-fruit weight, and fresh 100-grain weight of 53.5 mm, 70.6 g, and 479.01 g, respectively. “Boao 3” had an acid value and peroxide value of 1.59 mg/g and 3.50 mmol/kg, respectively, and its saponification value content was 213.18 mg/g. “Boao 5” had the highest iodine value, 101.86 g/100 g, among the 11 cultivars. The content of unsaturated fatty acids in the seed oil of 11 cultivars ranged from 84.87% to 87.38%. The qRT-PCR results confirmed that “Boao 3” had a higher content of flavonoids and fatty acids than other cultivars. The comprehensive analysis of physiological and biochemical indices showed that the top five cultivars were “Haida 1”, “Boao 3”, “Haida 2”, “Boao 1”, and “Boao 5”. These five cultivars were suitable for large-scale cultivation in tropical regions, such as Hainan Island. This study provided a theoretical basis for the breeding of C. vietnamensis cultivars in tropical regions. Full article

Anchote (Coccinia abyssinica) is a neglected high-potential food and nutrition security tuber crop in Ethiopia. Phenotyping core germplasm collections using agro-morphological and physiological markers is essential for effective crop improvement and utilization. A total of 282 anchote germplasms were profiled using six qualitative and twenty-six quantitative agro-morphological and physiological traits. Augmented Block Design was used for the experiment at the Debre Zeit Agricultural Research Center. The chi-square test and Shannon diversity index indicated the presence of substantial phenotypic variation and diversity among the accessions based on the predominant qualitative traits studied. The quantitative agro-morphological and physiological traits showed wider variability and ranges for the accessions. The broad-sense heritability and genetic advance as a percentage of the mean were notably high for quantitative traits such as root yield, vine length, and leaf area index. A significantly positive correlation was observed among agronomically important traits such as root yield and root diameter as well as root yield and leaf area. The principal component analysis for qualitative and quantitative traits found that ten components explained 72.2% of the variation for qualitative traits, whereas nine components accounted for 69.96% of the variation in quantitative traits. The primary contributors to the variations are traits such as root (shape, flesh color, and yield), leaf (color, length, diameter, area) and fruit (length, diameter, and weight). Further, the accessions were grouped into two and three clusters based on qualitative and quantitative traits, respectively, indicating that quantitative characters better differentiated among the accessions. Similarly, the tanglegram showed little similarity between the qualitative and quantitative agro-morphological and physiological traits in clustering the accessions. These findings indicate the presence of sizable trait variation among the accessions that can be exploited as a selection marker to design and facilitate conservation and breeding strategies of anchote. Biostimulants, particularly single amino acids, can increase plant growth and crop quality, gaining significant attention. This study investigates the effects of 10 amino acids via root/foliar application on the growth, quality, taste, and volatile flavor of mini-watermelons and compares the differences between the application methods. Here, we employed electronic noses, electronic tongues, and gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry to investigate these effects. Root application excels in fruit growth and pectin accumulation, while foliar application boosts soluble protein and specific nutrients. Specifically, root application (except for Val) significantly increases fruit weight, with Gly being most effective for longitudinal diameter, while most amino acids (except Val/Lys) promote transverse diameter. Pectin content shows bidirectional regulation: root application of Glu/Gly/Lys/Pro/Trp/Val enhances pectin, whereas foliar application inhibits it. For taste indices, most treatments improve soluble solids (except Glu root/Arg-Leu foliar), and Ala/Asp/Glu/Gly reduce titratable acids, optimizing the sugar–acid ratio. Foliar application is more efficient for soluble protein accumulation (Ala/Glu/Gly/Pro/Leu). For nutritional quality, except for Lys, all treatments increase vitamin C and widely promote total phenolics and lycopene, with only minor exceptions, and only Arg foliar application enhances ORAC. Additionally, the results revealed that root-applied lysine and valine greatly raised the levels of hexanal and 2-nonenal, whereas foliar-applied valine significantly increased n-nonanal and (Z)-6-nonenal. Overall, we found that amino acids can considerably improve mini-watermelon production, quality, taste, and antioxidant capacity, providing theoretical and practical references for their widespread use in agriculture. To explore the feasibility of integrated deficit water-biogas slurry irrigation under indirect subsurface drip irrigation, three deficit irrigation levels (60%FC, 70%FC, and 80%FC; FC represents field capacity) were established during the three growth stages of tomatoes. The results indicated that biogas slurry irrigation treatments increased the soil organic matter content in the root zone and water use efficiency (WUE) and reduced soil pH. As the degree of deficit increased, the plant height and stem diameter of tomatoes decreased significantly (p < 0.05), particularly during the seedling and flowering-fruiting stages. A mild deficit during the seedling stage was beneficial for subsequent plant growth, yielding maximum leaf area (6871.42 cm2 plant−1). Moderate deficit treatment at the seedling stage maximized yield, which was 19.79% higher than the control treatment in 2020 and 19.22% higher in 2021. The WUE of severe deficit treatment at the maturity stage increased by 26.6% (2020) and 31.04% (2021) compared to the control treatment. Comprehensive evaluation using TOPSIS combined with the weighted method revealed that severe deficit treatment at the maturity stage provided the best comprehensive benefits for tomatoes. In summary, deficit irrigation at different growth stages positively influenced tomato growth, quality, and soil environment in response to water-biogas slurry irrigation. Full article

Flammulina velutipes is a widely cultivated edible mushroom in East Asia, recognized for its nutritional benefits and distinct morphology characterized by a long stipe and a compact, hemispherical pileus. The pileus not only plays a critical biological role in reproduction through spore formation but also serves as a key commercial trait influencing consumer preference and market value. Despite its economic importance, pileus development in F. velutipes is highly sensitive to environmental factors, among which carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is particularly influential under indoor cultivation conditions. While previous studies have reported that elevated CO2 levels can inhibit pileus expansion in other mushroom species, the molecular mechanisms by which CO2 affects pileus growth in F. velutipes remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the impact of CO2 concentration on pileus morphology and gene expression in F. velutipes by cultivating fruiting bodies under two controlled atmospheric conditions: low (1000 ppm) and high (10,000 ppm) CO2. Morphometric analysis revealed that elevated CO2 levels significantly suppressed pileus expansion, reducing the average diameter by more than 50% compared to the low CO2 condition. To elucidate the underlying genetic response, we conducted RNA sequencing and identified 102 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), with 78 being downregulated under elevated CO2. Functional enrichment analysis highlighted the involvement of cyclin-dependent protein kinase regulatory pathways in this response. Two cyclin genes were found to be significantly downregulated under elevated CO2 conditions, and their suppression was validated through quantitative real-time PCR. These genes, possessing conserved cyclin_N domains, are implicated in the regulation of the eukaryotic cell cycle, particularly in mitotic growth. These results indicate that CO2-induced downregulation of cyclin genes may underlie cell cycle arrest, contributing to inhibited pileus development. This study is the first to provide transcriptomic evidence that elevated CO2 concentrations specifically repress PHO80-like cyclin genes in F. velutipes, revealing a molecular mechanism by which CO2 stress inhibits pileus development. These findings suggest that elevated CO2 triggers a morphogenetic checkpoint by repressing PHO80-like cyclins, thereby modulating cell cycle progression during fruiting body development. This study provides the first evidence of such a transcriptional response in edible mushrooms and offers promising molecular targets for breeding CO2-resilient strains and optimizing commercial cultivation conditions. Xylosalsola chiwensis (Popov) Akhani & Roalson is listed in the Red Data Book of Kazakhstan as a rare species with a limited distribution, occurring in small populations in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of the ecological conditions of its habitats, the floristic composition of its associated plant communities, the species’ morphological and anatomical characteristics, and its molecular phylogeny, as well as to identify the main threats to its survival. The ecological conditions of the X. chiwensis habitats include coastal sandy plains and the slopes of chinks and denudation plains with gray–brown desert soils and bozyngens on the Mangyshlak Peninsula and the Ustyurt Plateau at altitudes ranging from −3 to 270 m above sea level. The species is capable of surviving in arid conditions (less than 100 mm of annual precipitation) and under extreme temperatures (air temperatures exceeding 45 °C and soil surface temperatures above 65 °C). In X. chiwensis communities, we recorded 53 species of vascular plants. Anthropogenic factors associated with livestock grazing, industrial disturbances, and off-road vehicle traffic along an unregulated network of dirt roads have been identified as contributing to population decline and the potential extinction of the species under conditions of unsustainable land use. The morphometric traits of X. chiwensis could be used for taxonomic analysis and for identifying diagnostic morphological characteristics to distinguish between species of Xylosalsola. The most taxonomically valuable characteristics include the fruit diameter (with wings) and the cone-shaped structure length, as they differ consistently between species and exhibit relatively low variability. Anatomical adaptations to arid conditions were observed, including a well-developed hypodermis, which is indicative of a water-conserving strategy. The moderate photosynthetic activity, reflected by a thinner palisade mesophyll layer, may be associated with reduced photosynthetic intensity, which is compensated for through structural mechanisms for water conservation. The flow cytometry analysis revealed a genome size of 2.483 ± 0.191 pg (2n/4x = 18), and the phylogenetic analysis confirmed the placement of X. chiwensis within the tribe Salsoleae of the subfamily Salsoloideae, supporting its taxonomic distinctness. To support the conservation of this rare species, measures are proposed to expand the area of the Ustyurt Nature Reserve through the establishment of cluster sites. Full article

Fruit size is an important agronomic trait affecting the yield and commercial value of melon and a key trait selected for during domestication. In this study, two respective melon accessions (large-fruited M202008 and small-fruited M202009) were crossed, and developed biparental mapping populations of the F2 generation (160 and 382 plants) were checked across two subsequent experimental years (2023 and 2024). The phenotypic characterization and genetic inheritance analysis showed that melon fruit size is modulated by quantitative genetics. Bulked segregant sequencing analysis (BSA-seq) identified a stable and effective quantitative trait locus (QTL, named Cmfs) controlling fruit size, localized to a 3.75 Mb region on chromosome 9. To better delineate the main-effect Cmfs locus, co-dominant polymorphic molecular markers were developed in this genetic interval, and genotyping was performed within the F2 mapping populations grown across two years. QTL analysis of the phenotypic and genotypic datasets delimited the major-effect Cmfs locus interval for fruit length [2023: logarithm of odds (LOD) value = 6.16, 16.20% phenotypic variation explained (PVE); 2024: LOD = 5.44, 6.35% PVE] and fruit diameter (2023: LOD value = 5.48, 14.59% PVE; 2024: LOD = 6.22, 7.22% PVE) to 1.88 and 2.20 Mb intervals, respectively. The annotation analysis across the melon genome and comparison of resequencing data from the two parental lines led to the preliminary identification of MELO3C021600.1 (annotated as cytochrome P450 724B1) as a candidate gene related to melon fruit size. These results provide a better understanding for further fine mapping and functional gene analysis related to melon fruit size. Full article

In this study the objective was to morphologically characterize fruits, seeds and seedlings of Cereus fernambucensis Lem., as well as evaluate the seed germination and phenological dynamics of these columnar cacti, native to Brazil, which occur in restinga ecosystems. Biometric and morphological determinations were performed using 100 fruits, describing seed morphology in external and internal aspects and considering five stages of development for the characterization of seedlings. In the study of seed germination, two light conditions (12 h photoperiod and complete darkness) were tested under 25 °C, in a completely randomized design with four replicates of 50 seeds each. In the estimation of reproductive phenology, information was collected from herbarium specimens on the SpeciesLink online platform, and the exsiccatae were analyzed for the notes on their labels to evaluate reproductive aspects. Fruits showed an average mass of 21.11 g, length of 44.76 mm, diameter of 28.77 mm and about 336 seeds per fruit. Seeds behave as positive photoblastic, with a high percentage of germination under controlled conditions (94%). Germination is epigeal and phanerocotylar, with slow growth and, at 30 days after sowing, the seedling measures approximately 2 cm, which makes it possible to visualize the appearance of the epicotyl and the first spines. The species blooms and bears fruit throughout the year, with peaks of flowering and fruiting in January and March, respectively. The various characteristics make C. fernambucensis a key species for maintaining the biodiversity of restingas. Full article

Insights into dynamic regulatory factors in various stages of growth and development can guide strategies for precision and targeted breeding. Bitter gourd, as a vegetable product with medicinal value, plays a role in both agricultural and medical fields. In this study, phenotypic observations, metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses, and differential gene expression patterns, along with a correlation analysis, were conducted in different stages of fruit growth and development. The results revealed that the growth rate of fruit’s fresh weight, length, diameter, and flesh thickness during the first seven days was slow, and that it then rapidly increased after the seventh day, and finally slowed once more after 17 days, indicating that the overall process followed a “slow–fast–slow” pattern. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses identified several differentially expressed genes and metabolites, and joint analyses revealed that each of the glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, fructose and mannose metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis pathways individually play significant roles in the dynamic regulation of fruit growth and development during the early, middle, and late stages. Among these, 53 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 12 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) were found in these pathways. A total of 12 randomly selected DEGs were analyzed using quantitative PCR, and the results showed that gene expression levels were generally consistent with transcriptomic sequencing results, exhibiting dynamic changes with varying expression levels. Correlation analysis revealed that 11 DEMs were positively correlated with four traits except for arbutin, while eight DEGs were related to all traits, including six significantly positive and two significantly negative correlations. These findings enhance our understanding of the regulatory network governing yield and quality and provide substantial evidence to support improvements in breeding programs. Full article

This study presented a novel antimicrobial packaging PVA/xanthan gum film decorated with green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) derived from Myrica rubra leaf extract (MRLE) for the first time. Montmorillonite (MMT) was used to improve its dispersion (AgNPs@MMT). The synthesis time, temperature, and concentration of AgNO3 were considered using a central composite design coupled with response surface methodology to obtain the optimum AgNPs (2 h, 75 °C, 2 mM). Analysis of substance concentration changes confirmed that the higher phenolic and flavonoid content in MRLE acted as reducing agents and stabilizers in AgNP synthesis, participating in the reaction rather than adsorbing to nanoparticles. TEM, XRD, and FTIR images revealed a spherical shape of the prepared AgNPs, with an average diameter of 8.23 ± 4.27 nm. The incorporation of AgNPs@MMT significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the films, with the elongation at break and shear strength increasing by 65.19% and 52.10%, respectively, for the PAM2 sample. The films exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against both Escherichia coli (18.56 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (20.73 mm). The films demonstrated effective food preservation capabilities, significantly reducing weight loss and extending the shelf life of packaged grapes and bananas. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the diffusion behavior of AgNPs in different matrices, while the measured silver migration (0.25 ± 0.03 mg/kg) complied with EFSA regulations (10 mg/kg), confirming its food safety. These results demonstrate the film’s potential as an active packaging material for fruit preservation. Full article

This study investigated the influence of cane diameter on vegetative, productive, and physiological behaviors in Actinidia chinensis, cv. Gold 3. Conducted over two years (2021–2022), the experiment compared canes with larger (HD) and smaller (LD) proximal diameters. This research focused on parameters such as shoot morphology, leaf gas exchange, fruit quality, and hydraulic resistance. The results revealed that HD canes promoted more vigorous growth, with a higher proportion of long and medium shoots, whereas LD canes resulted in shorter shoots. Additionally, the HD canes demonstrated a higher leaf area and more extensive leaf coverage, contributing to enhanced photosynthetic activity, as evidenced by enhanced gas exchange, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rates. This higher photosynthetic efficiency in HD canes resulted in more rapid fruit growth, with a larger fruit size and weight, particularly in fruits from non-terminate shoots. By contrast, fruits on LD canes exhibited slower growth, particularly in terms of fresh weight and dry matter accumulation. Despite these differences, maturation indices, including soluble solids and acidity levels, were not significantly affected by cane type. The findings suggest that selecting HD canes during winter pruning could lead to earlier harvests, with improved fruit quality and productivity, making this practice beneficial for optimizing vineyard management in Actinidia chinensis. Fatty acids tend to undergo dynamic changes during the growth and development of fruits. In this study, we analyzed the variations in fruit morphology and kernel fatty acid fractions and contents at seven post-flowering stages in the fruit of ‘A4’ and ‘OC’, two main macadamia cultivars in Yunnan, China. The single fruit weight and longitudinal and transverse diameters showed a ‘fast–slow–stable’ growth trend, and the fruit shape index gradually decreased with fruit development. A total of 13 saturated fatty acids, 18 monounsaturated fatty acids, and 10 polyunsaturated fatty acids were detected in macadamia kernels at seven developmental stages. The total fatty acid content in ‘OC’ and ‘A4’ tended to first increase and then decrease. The fatty acid content accounted for 8.81% and 6.33% of the total fatty acids at 50 days after flowering (DAF), and peaked at 95 DAF and 125 DAF (the fatty acid content accounted for 25.61% and 20.69% of the total fatty acids), indicating that these two periods are critical for fatty acid accumulation in the two cultivars. In addition, oleic acid, palmitoleic acid, cis-Vaccenic acid, and hexadecenoic acid were determined as the main fatty acids. This study reveals the dynamic changes in fatty acid composition and content in ‘OC’ and ‘A4’ during fruit development, providing a scientific basis for determining the appropriate harvesting time for macadamia nuts. Molecular Hydrogen Improves Blueberry Main Fruit Traits via Metabolic Reprogramming

Fruit yield and quality improvement are challenges for researchers and farmers. This study reveals that the main fruit traits of blueberry (Vaccinium ashei ‘Bluegem’) were significantly improved after hydrogen (H2)-based irrigation, assessed by the increased single fruit weight (14.59 ± 6.66%) and fruit equatorial diameter (4.19 ± 2.39%), decreased titratable acidity, increased solid–acid and sugar–acid ratios. The enhancement of fruit quality was confirmed by the increased total volatiles, vitamin C contents, and antioxidant capacity. Using weighted protein co-expression network analysis (WPCNA), proteomic interrogation revealed that serine carboxypeptidase-like proteins I/II (SCPLI/II), ADP ribosylation factor 1/2 (ARF1/2), and UDP-glucosyltransferase 85A (UGT85A) might be functionally associated with the increased fruit weight and size driven by H2. Reduced organic acid accumulation was caused by the regulation of the specific enzymes involved in sucrose metabolism (e.g., α-amylase, endoglucanase, β-glucosidase, etc.). H2 regulation of fatty acid degradation (e.g., acyl CoA oxidase 1 (ACX1), acetyl CoA acyltransferase 1 (ACAA1), etc.) and phenylpropanoid metabolism were used to explain the improved fruit aroma and anthocyanin accumulation. Meanwhile, the upregulated heat shock protein 20/70 matched with the enhanced antioxidant activity. Together, this study provides a novel approach for yield and quality improvement in horticultural crops. Full article

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the iota, kappa and lambda carrageenan fractions on the physical properties and crystal structure of a fruit sorbet prepared from frozen mango fruits. During this study, physical properties such as density, cryoscopic temperature, osmotic pressure, overrun and melting time were analyzed. In order to assess the crystal structure and its changes, microscope images were taken of each sample after 1, 30 and 90 days of storage. The stabilizers showed no significant effect on the physical properties of the ice cream mixture; however, the sample with iota carrageenan stood out for having the highest overrun (58.7%) and the sample with kappa carrageenan took the longest to melt of all tested samples (almost 21 min). This study shows a significant effect of carrageenans in reducing the initial size of ice crystals as well as reducing recrystallization during storage. The stabilizing blend using ι-carrageenan provided the most effective cryoprotective properties, with an ice crystal diameter of 9 µm. Full article

Accurate acquisition of the phenotypic information of trunk-shaped fruit trees plays a crucial role in intelligent orchard management, pruning during dormancy, and improving fruit yield and quality. However, the precise segmentation of trunks and branches remains a significant challenge, limiting the accurate measurement of phenotypic parameters and high-precision pruning of branches. To address this issue, a novel adaptive cuboid regional growth segmentation algorithm is proposed in this study. This method integrates a growth vector that is adaptively adjusted based on the growth trend of branches and a growth cuboid that is dynamically regulated according to branch diameters. Additionally, an innovative reverse growth strategy is introduced to enhance the efficiency of the growth process. Furthermore, the algorithm can automatically and effectively identify the starting and ending points of growth based on the structural characteristics of fruit tree branches, solving the problem of where to start and when to stop. Compared with PointNet++, PointNeXt, and Point Transformer, ACRGS achieved superior performance, with F1-scores of 95.75% and 96.21% and mIoU values of 0.927 and 0.933 for apple and cherry trees. The results show that the method enables high-precision and efficiency trunk–branch segmentation, providing data support for fruit tree phenotypic parameter extraction and pruning. Full article
