Gaming has evolved into a cultural phenomenon with a global reach, captivating millions of individuals. Nevertheless, little is known about this population. We aim to physiologically characterise the Portuguese gamers, bearing in mind that phase angle (PhA) is a general indicator of health, to check possible correlations between body composition, strength, and nutrition. A sample of 35 male gamers (individuals who play video games) was evaluated for anthropometry; body composition through DXA for whole-body bone mineral content (BMC), fat-free mass (FFM, kg), fat mass, and visceral adipose tissue, and through BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis) for total body water (TBW), water pools (extracellular water and intracellular water, ICW), and PhA; strength through maximal isometric handgrip strength using a dynamometer; and nutritional intake using a three-day food record. Results show that participants are within reference metrics for all the analysed variables except regarding protein and carbohydrate intake (all values are above and below the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges, respectively). A positive correlation was observed between PhA and TBW, ICW, handgrip strength, BMC and FFM, and a negative correlation with fat mass (absolute, percentage and visceral). In conclusion, PhA correlates with body composition variables, which aligns with previous research as a predictor of health and performance. Full article

The Effect of Short-Term Healthy Ketogenic Diet Ready-To-Eat Meals Versus Healthy Ketogenic Diet Counselling on Weight Loss in Overweight Adults: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Background/Objectives: Conventional ketogenic diets, although effective for weight loss, often contain high total and saturated fat intake, which leads to increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Thus, the Healthy Ketogenic Diet (HKD) was developed to address these concerns. It emphasizes calorie restriction, limiting net carbohydrate intake to 50 g per day, prioritizing unsaturated fats, and reducing saturated fat intake. However, adherence to the HKD remains a challenge in urban, time-constrained environments. Therefore, this pilot randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the effects of Healthy Ketogenic Diet Ready-To-Eat (HKD-RTE) meals (provided for the first month only) versus HKD alone on weight loss and metabolic parameters among overweight adults. Methods: Multi-ethnic Asian adults (n = 50) with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27.5 kg/m2 were randomized into the HKD-RTE group (n = 24) and the HKD group (n = 26). Both groups followed the HKD for six months, with the HKD-RTE group receiving HKD-RTE meals during the first month. Five in-person workshops and mobile health coaching through the Nutritionist Buddy Keto app helped to facilitate dietary adherence. The primary outcome was the change in body weight at 6 months. Linear regression was performed on the change from baseline for each continuous outcome, adjusting for demographics and relevant covariates. Logistic regression was performed on binary weight loss ≥ 5%, adjusting for demographics and relevant covariates. Results: In the HKD group, participants’ adherence to the 50 g net carbohydrate target was 15 days, while that in the HKD-RTE group was 19 days over a period of 30 days. Participants’ adherence to calorie targets was 21 days in the HKD group and 23 days in the HKD-RTE. The average compliance with the HKD-RTE meals provided in the HKD-RTE group was 55%. The HKD-RTE group experienced a greater percentage weight loss at 1 month (−4.8 ± 3.0% vs. −1.8 ± 6.2%), although this was not statistically significant. This trend continued up to 6 months, with the HKD-RTE group showing a greater percentage weight reduction (−8.6 ± 6.8% vs. −3.9 ± 8.6%; p = 0.092). At 6 months, the HKD-RTE group had a greater reduction in total cholesterol (−0.54 ± 0.76 mmol/L vs. −0.05 ± 0.56 mmol/L; p = 0.283) and LDL-C (−0.43 ± 0.67 mmol/L vs. −0.03 ± 0.52 mmol/L; p = 0.374) compared to the HKD group. Additionally, the HKD-RTE group exhibited greater reductions in systolic blood pressure (−8.3 ± 9.7 mmHg vs. −5.3 ± 11.0 mmHg), diastolic blood pressure (−7.7 ± 8.8 mmHg vs. −2.0 ± 7.0 mmHg), and HbA1c (−0.3 ± 0.5% vs. −0.1 ± 0.4%) than the HKD group (not statistically significant for any). Conclusions: Both HKD-RTE and HKD led to weight loss and improved metabolic profiles. The HKD-RTE group tended to show more favorable outcomes. Short-term HKD-RTE meal provision may enhance initial weight loss, with sustained long-term effects. Full article

Background: Studies on ketogenic diets with a higher percentage of fat composition have revealed conflicting results regarding the modulation of lipid metabolism and tissue inflammation. Furthermore, studies on soy protein consumption in ketogenic diets remain limited. In this study, the effects of ketogenic diets on hepatic and adipose tissue inflammation and of soy protein replacement in ketogenic diets were investigated. Methods: Mice were randomly assigned to a control diet (C), ketogenic diet (KD), or ketogenic with soy protein (KS) groups for an 18-week experiment. Both ketogenic diet groups were fed a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet during the first 12 weeks and a ketogenic diet during the last 6 weeks of the experiment. The KS group was fed the same diet as the KD group, but soy protein was substituted for casein during the last 6 weeks. Results: The KD and KS groups exhibited higher plasma β-hydroxybutyrate levels; a higher incidence of hyperlipidemia; and lower blood glucose, mesenteric fat mass, adipose tissue TNF-α, IL-1β levels, and NLRP3 protein expression compared with the C group. In the gut microbiota analysis, the KD group had a higher F-B ratio than the C group. Greater A. muciniphila abundance and a lower F-B ratio were noted in the KS group compared with the KD group. Conclusions: Although ketogenic diets decreased mesenteric fat mass and adipose tissue inflammation and modulated NLRP3 expression, they were associated with hepatic inflammation and gut dysbiosis. Soy protein consumption in a ketogenic diet did not differ from casein consumption regarding diet-induced tissue inflammation, but it may have altered the gut microbiota. Full article

The aim of this systematic review was to examine the effects of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on physical performance and body composition in female basketball players. The review followed PRISMA guidelines, and the protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (registration number: CRD420251006285). A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Nine studies that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed, with intervention durations ranging from 4 to 12 weeks. Despite differences in protocols, a majority of studies reported improvements in VO2max (6/9), explosive strength (7/9), agility (5/6), and speed (5/6) and reductions in body mass and fat percentage (3/3). These findings highlight HIIT as an effective method for enhancing both aerobic and anaerobic capacities, as well as optimizing body composition. Despite variations in study protocols, HIIT consistently offers improvements in performance, irrespective of training level. The results underscore the importance of HIIT in preparing athletes, not only during the preseason but also throughout the competition period. Coaches should consider integrating HIIT into training programs, adjusting intensity and volume based on the season to optimize performance and prevent overtraining. Full article

Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between the level of physical activity and body composition, and the levels of motor skills and strength in overweight and obese men. Methods: The research involved 64 men. Body composition, physical activity, motor control, Motor Control Test (MCT), and strength variables were evaluated. Body composition was assessed by DXA, and the participants were classified into two groups according to the percentage of total fat mass: greater and less than 27.65%. Physical activity was assessed using accelerometry, and motor control was measured with posturography, which provided a composite score of motor performance and postural control effectiveness. Strength was assessed using hand, leg, and back dynamometers. Results: The participants with a higher percentage of body fat had a lower DSI (Dynamic Strength Index) (p < 0.001) and significantly reduced PAL (physical activity level) and energy expenditure (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found in the muscle strength of the upper limbs (p = 0.06) and lower limbs (p = 0.419). With regard to MCT, there was a significant difference between groups in the backward direction (p = 0.041), with the group with the highest percentage of body fat showing lower values. Conclusions: Individuals with a higher percentage of body fat tend to have lower levels of strength, physical activity, and energy expenditure, which can lead to impaired balance. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve body composition and levels of strength and physical activity, with a positive impact on general health and quality of life. Emphasis should be placed on improving physical activity levels in male individuals with a higher percentage of fat mass to improve their body composition and dynamic strength levels, which are beneficial to life, particularly to help improve postural control. This study aimed to investigate the effects of augmented reality (AR) treadmill walking training on cognitive function, body composition, physiological responses, and acceptance among older adults. Additionally, it analyzed the relationships between body composition, physiological responses, and the acceptance of AR technology. A randomized controlled trial was conducted, recruiting 60 healthy older adults, who were assigned to either the experimental group (AR treadmill walking training) or the control group (traditional treadmill walking training). The assessments included cognitive function evaluation (stride length, walking speed, and balance test), body composition (BMI, skeletal muscle mass, fat mass, and body fat percentage), and physiological responses (heart rate, calorie expenditure, exercise duration, and distance covered). Furthermore, the AR Acceptance Scale was used to assess perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitudes, and behavioral intentions. The results indicated that AR treadmill walking training had significant positive effects on improving cognitive function, optimizing body composition, and enhancing physiological responses among older adults. Compared with the traditional training group, the experimental group demonstrated better performance in stride length, walking speed, and balance tests, with increased skeletal muscle mass and reduced body fat percentage. Additionally, improvements were observed in heart rate regulation, calorie expenditure, exercise duration, and distance covered, reflecting enhanced exercise tolerance. Moreover, older adults exhibited a high level of acceptance toward AR technology, particularly in terms of attitudes and behavioral intentions, as well as perceived usefulness. This study provides empirical support for the application of AR technology in promoting elderly health and suggests that future research should explore personalized adaptation strategies and long-term effects to further expand the potential value of AR technology in elderly exercise. Background and Objectives: Body composition changes with aging and menopause, often leading to increased adiposity and a shift in fat distribution. While BMI is commonly used in clinical practice, it does not accurately reflect fat mass or distribution. This study aims to evaluate age-related changes in both total and regional adiposity using DXA-derived indices in Korean women aged ≥ 40 years and to assess the limitations of BMI-based obesity classification. Materials and Methods: This retrospective multicenter study analyzed the DXA scans and clinical records of 914 Korean women aged 40–80 years who attended menopause clinics across multiple institutions between 2018 and 2021. We analyzed five adiposity indices: body mass index (BMI), total body fat percentage (TB%F), fat mass index (FMI), visceral adipose tissue (VAT) area, and android-to-gynoid (A/G) fat ratio. Excess adiposity was defined as BMI ≥ 23 kg/m2, TB%F ≥ 40%, FMI ≥ 9 kg/m2, VAT > 100 cm2, or A/G ratio > 1.0. Age group comparisons were made using ANOVA, and misclassification was assessed by comparing BMI with other indices. Results: Mean BMI increased with age, peaking in the 60s before declining in the 70s. TB%F and FMI peaked in the 50s, while VAT and A/G ratio increased continuously with age. Excess adiposity was found in 41.9% of women by TB%F, 40.5% by FMI, and 59.4% by VAT in the 70s. Notably, 22% of women with normal BMI (<23 kg/m2) had VAT > 100 cm2, and 35.7% had A/G > 1.0, indicating central obesity. Conclusions: DXA-based indices provide a more accurate assessment of adiposity and associated cardiometabolic risks in aging women than BMI alone. Clinical screening strategies should consider incorporating regional fat distribution markers, particularly in midlife and postmenopausal populations, to better identify individuals at risk. Background/Objectives: The role of body composition in sports performance has been widely studied, particularly in soccer. Understanding how anthropometric characteristics impact movement efficiency and neuromuscular performance is crucial for optimizing player performance. This study examined the relationship between body composition and locomotor performance in elite soccer players. Methods: Thirty-six male soccer players from the Mexican National Team participated in the study, where body composition was assessed using surface anthropometry. Players underwent tests to measure countermovement jump (CMJ) performance, sprinting speed, maximum acceleration, and distance covered during two games of the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals. Correlation matrices were created to identify the most significant associations, followed by generalized linear models (GLMs) to associate body composition variables with performance metrics. Results: Anthropometric profile tables were created by playing position. Higher body fat percentage (%BF) was associated with lower performance. Specifically, higher %BF was associated with slower sprint speed (B = −0.74 m/s, p < 0.001) and shorter distance covered (B = −4.86 m/min, p < 0.001). Conversely, greater muscularity, reflected by corrected girth values for the thigh and calf, was associated with improved CMJ performance. Thigh corrected girth was positively associated with concentric mean force (B = 48.85 N, p < 0.001), and calf corrected girth was positively associated with peak power (B = 240.50 W, p < 0.001). These findings underscore the importance of low body fat and high lean mass for efficient movement. Conclusions: The results highlight the critical role of body composition in enhancing soccer performance, particularly for explosive movements like jumps, sprints, and accelerations. This study suggests that monitoring and optimizing body composition should be a central focus of nutrition, training, and conditioning strategies, adapted to the specific positional demands of professional soccer. Comparative Analysis of Mechanical Variables in Different Exercises Performed with a Rotational Inertial Device in Professional Soccer Players: A Pilot Study

Background: Soccer performance is largely dependent on high-intensity, unilateral actions such as sprints, jumps, and changes of direction. These demands can lead to strength and power differences between limbs, highlighting the importance of individualised assessment in professional players. Rotational inertial devices offer a valuable method to evaluate and train these mechanical variables separately for each leg. The aim of this study was twofold: (a) to characterise the mechanical variables derived from several lower-body strength exercises performed on rotational inertial devices, all targeting the same muscle group; and (b) to compare the mechanical variables between the dominant and non-dominant leg for each exercise. Methods: Twenty-six male professional soccer players (age = 26.3 ± 5.1 years; height = 182.3 ± 0.6 cm; weight = 75.9 ± 5.9 kg; body mass index = 22.8 ± 1.1 kg/m2; fat mass percentage = 9.1 ± 0.6%; fat-free mass = 68.8 ± 5.3 kg), all belonging to the same professional Belgian team, voluntarily participated in this study. The players completed a single assessment session consisting of six unilateral exercises (i.e., quadriceps hip, hamstring knee, adductor, quadriceps knee, hamstring hip, and abductor). For each exercise, they performed two sets of eight repetitions with each leg (i.e., dominant and non-dominant) in a randomised order. Results: The quadriceps hip exercise resulted in higher mechanical values compared to the quadriceps knee exercise in both limbs (p < 0.004). Similarly, the hamstring hip exercise produced greater values across all variables and limbs (p < 0.004), except for peak force, where the hamstring knee exercise exhibited higher values (p < 0.004). The adductor exercise showed higher peak force values for the dominant limb (p < 0.004). The between-limb comparison revealed differences only in the abductor exercise (p < 0.004). Conclusions: These findings suggest the necessity of prioritising movement selection based on targeted outcomes, although it should be considered that the differences between limb differences are very limited. Westernization of traditional diets has been implicated in the rising burden of overweight/obesity and type 2 diabetes, especially in developing countries. In recent times, diet therapy is increasingly being recognized as an essential component of diabetes care. This study assessed the effect of diet therapy on body composition, antioxidant nutrient intake, and glycemic status in individuals living with type 2 diabetes (ILWT2D). In this prospective observational cohort study, 45 ILWT2D who were receiving diet therapy (personalized dietary counseling) in addition to standard medical treatment (intervention group) were compared with 45 ILWT2D receiving only standard medical treatment (comparator group). Antioxidant micronutrient intake was assessed using a 24-h dietary recall. Body composition indices, including body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat (%BF), and visceral fat (VF), were assessed. Participants’ fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) levels, and blood pressure (BP) were measured. All measurements were performed before and after a three-month period. There were significant improvements in BMI (27.8 ± 6.0 kg/m2 vs. 26.9 ± 5.5 kg/m2, p = 0.003), %BF (37.8 ± 11.9% vs. 35.5 ± 10.5%, p < 0.001), visceral fat (9.8 ± 3.4 vs. 9.1 ± 3.2, p < 0.001), systolic BP (136.9 ± 19.9 mmHg vs. 124.6 ± 13.0 mmHg, p < 0.001), FBG (8.8 ± 2.8 mmol/L vs. 6.7 ± 1.5 mmol/L, p < 0.001), and HbA1c (7.3 ± 1.0% vs. 6.4 ± 0.8%, p < 0.001) in the intervention group from baseline to endline, but not in the comparator group. In contrast, %BF increased within the comparator group (39.9 ± 7.8 vs. 40.7 ± 7.4; p = 0.029). Vitamin A intake increased significantly (227.5 ± 184.3 µg vs. 318.8 ± 274.7 µg, p = 0.038) within the intervention group but not in the comparator group (174.9 ± 154.3 µg, 193.7 ± 101.4 µg, p = 0.54). There were no significant changes in zinc, copper, selenium, and vitamin C intakes (p > 0.05) in the intervention group from the baseline to endline, unlike those in the comparator group who showed a significant increase in the intake of these nutrients. There was a significant increase in vitamin A intake among the ILWT2D who received dietary counseling as an intervention compared to those who did not. Additionally, the ILWT2D who received dietary counseling had significant improvements in their body composition (BMI, body fat, and visceral fat) and systolic blood pressure, compared to those who did not. The ILWT2D who received the intervention had significantly better glycemic control (FBG and HbA1c) than their counterparts who did not. Thus, this study suggests the potential of diet therapy as a viable non-pharmacological treatment approach for individuals living with type 2 diabetes. Full article

Objectives: The aim of this study was to indicate which variables are the most important determinants of swimming results in the 50 m front crawl among non-elite pre-pubertal female swimmers. Methods: The study group consisted of 14 female swimmers (at the time of the research commencement—biological age: 10.52 ± 0.37 years; body mass: 34.99 ± 2.77 kg; height: 146.00 ± 3.05 cm). The study was conducted over three years. The swimmers performed capacity training recommended by the British Swimming Federation. Every 6 months, in the participants the following parameters were measured: percentage of body fat; anthropometric measurements; aerobic and anaerobic capacity; and respiratory parameters: vital capacity—VC, forced expiratory volume—FEV1, and forced vital capacity—FVC. Additionally, a 50 m front crawl swim test was performed. Results: After adjusting for multicollinearity, the most influential determinants of swimming performance were anthropometric measures: shoulder width was the most influential predictor, with a regression coefficient of −0.66, followed by foot length (with a beta of −0.15) and chest depth (with a beta of 0.008). The remaining anthropometric and physical predictors did not contribute to the prediction of 50 m freestyle performance. Conclusions: These research results suggest to coaches and trainers that sports performance in sprint distances in pre-pubertal girls is not determined by aerobic and anaerobic capacity or body fat but is based on the somatic build of the swimmer. Background: Pre-season training is pivotal for optimizing athletic performance in collegiate basketball, yet the effectiveness of such programs in improving body composition (BC) under NCAA-mandated hourly restrictions remains underexplored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a four-week, NCAA Division II-compliant strength and conditioning (SC) program on BC in women’s basketball. Methods: Sixteen student athletes (20.6 ± 1.8 y; 173.9 ± 6.5 cm; 76.2 ± 20.2 kg) completed an eight-hour-per-week micro-cycle incorporating functional conditioning, Olympic-lift-centric resistance, and on-court skill development. Lean body mass (LBM) and body-fat percentage (BF%) were assessed using multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance on Day 1 and Day 28. Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the fixed effect of Time (Pre, Post), including random intercepts for each athlete and covariate adjustment for age and height (α = 0.05). Results The LBM significantly increased by 1.49 kg (β = +1.49 ± 0.23 kg, t = 6.52, p < 0.001; 95% CI [1.02, 1.96]; R2 semi-partial = 0.55), while BF% decreased by 1.27 percentage points (β = −1.27 ± 0.58%, t = −2.20, p = 0.044; 95% CI [−2.45, −0.08]; R2 = 0.24). Height positively predicted LBM (β = +1.02 kg/cm, p < 0.001), whereas age showed no association (p > 0.64). Conclusions: A time-constrained, NCAA-compliant SC program meaningfully enhances lean mass and moderately reduces adiposity in collegiate women’s basketball athletes. These findings advocate for structured, high-intensity, mixed-modality training to maximize physiological readiness within existing regulatory frameworks. Future research should validate these results in larger cohorts and integrate performance metrics to further elucidate functional outcomes. Full article

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 16-week exercise program combining aerobic and resistance training on body composition, growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), apelin-12, and interleukin-15 (IL-15) in older Korean women according to obesity status. Methods: Participants were divided into obesity (n = 15) and normal-weight groups (n = 14). A walking exercise was performed at 60–70% heart rate reserve (RPE 13–15). The bodyweight resistance exercises were progressively intensified over 16 weeks. Analysis methods included two-way repeated measures ANOVA, ANCOVA, and paired and independent t-tests. Results: Significant main effects of time and group were observed in body weight (p < 0.001), and both groups demonstrated significant within-group reductions in body mass index (BMI) (obese: p < 0.001; normal-weight: p < 0.05), along with significant between-group differences (p < 0.001). The percentage of body fat significantly decreased over time (p < 0.01) and differed between groups (p < 0.001). GDF-15 exhibited a significant group × time interaction (p < 0.05) and a main group effect (p < 0.05). Although no statistically significant changes were observed in Apelin-12 levels, an opposite trend was identified between groups, with an increase in the obese group and a decrease in the normal-weight group. For IL-15, no significant interaction effect was found between the groups. Conclusions: The 16-week combined exercise intervention improved key markers of body composition, particularly in obese older women, and led to increased GDF-15, indicating potential metabolic benefits. While changes in apelin-12 and IL-15 were not statistically significant, the findings support the utility of combined exercise for mitigating fat accumulation and promoting healthy aging in older adults. Background/Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between glycemic control and increased glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), as assessed by serum creatinine and the CKiD equation in children and adolescents with T1DM. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study involved 80 T1DM patients (4–19 years) attending the Interdisciplinary Center for Diabetes. Biochemical, anthropometric, and skeletal muscle mass parameters were evaluated. The GFR was estimated using the CKiD equation expressed in mL/min/1.73 m2. Results: Our results showed that nearly 19.0% of the included patients presented increased values for eGFR, and most had poor glycemic control. Patients with HbA1c levels above 8% presented eGRF > 130. There was a positive correlation between hyperglycemia, elevated HbA1c, and fat percentage with higher eGRF values. In addition, the reduction in lean mass and skeletal muscle mass was related to elevated eGRF. Conclusions: Our study indicates that children and adolescents with T1DM who have elevated HbA1c, lower lean mass, and less than five years of diagnosis of diabetes are more likely to present higher eGRF values. Body mass index (BMI) is not equipped to adequately detect obesity in individuals, leading to conditions such as normal-weight obesity, which disproportionately impact older women. Bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) is a non-invasive and accessible method for assessing body composition and cellular health (e.g., resistance/height, reactance/height, phase angle), yet little is known about how BMI categories differ in cellular health. This cross-sectional study compared bioimpedance and adiposity across BMI classifications (normal weight, overweight, and obese) among 196 community-dwelling older women (age: 74.5 ± 7.0 years, BMI: 30.3 ± 6.3 kg/m2) using a one-way ANOVA and BIVA software. Individual and group bioimpedance were plotted within tolerance and 95% confidence ellipses. Body fat percentage (F = 70.6, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.42) and resistance/height (F = 36.4, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.27) differed between normal-weight, overweight, and obese groups. Reactance/height (F = 36.4, p < 0.001, ηp2 = 0.27) and phase angle (F = 4.77, p = 0.01, ηp2 = 0.05) only differed between normal-weight and obese groups. When plotted with 95% BIVA confidence ellipses, BMI categories occupied distinct positions from each other (T2 = 16.1 − 66.6, D = 0.68 − 1.48, p < 0.05). Within BIVA tolerance ellipses, overweight and obese categories fell in the “obese” quadrant, while the normal-weight category fell in the “athletic” quadrant. However, individual participants were predominantly scattered throughout the “cachectic,” “obese,” and “athletic” quadrants regardless of BMI. These findings suggest that BMI appears to be adequate for assessing population averages but not individual body composition. Future research should investigate the utility of bioelectrical resistance as a marker of obesity. Full article
