Sport Participation and Gender Differences in Dietary Preferences: A Cross-Sectional Study in Italian Adults

Background: The relationship between sports participation and food preferences in adults, as well as the influence of gender, is still unclear. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between sports participation and individual food preferences and to explore potential gender differences among sports participants in a large group of Italian adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 2665 adults (aged ≥ 18 years) who lead normal lives and underwent a routine lifestyle and dietary assessment at a clinical centre specialising in nutrition, metabolic health, and lifestyle counselling in Rome. Participants completed an online questionnaire on food preferences (19 foods) and sports practice. Multivariate logistic regression models, adjusted for age, sex, and smoking, were used to assess associations. Results: Sports participation was defined as engaging in structured physical activity at least once per week and was reported by 53.5% of subjects (men: 60.1%; women: 49.0%; p < 0.0001). After adjustment, active individuals were significantly more likely to prefer plant-based drinks, low-fat yoghurt, fish, cooked and raw vegetables, fruit, whole grains, tofu, and dark chocolate (all p < 0.05) and less likely to prefer cow’s milk (p = 0.018). Among sport participants, males were more likely to prefer meat (general, white, red, processed) and eggs, while females preferred plant-based drinks. No significant gender differences were observed for dairy products, legumes, or fish. Differences in food preferences were also observed according to the type of sport, with bodybuilders showing higher preference for tofu and dark chocolate. The strongest associations were found in the 25–44 age group. Conclusions: Sports participation is independently associated with specific food preferences, characterised by greater preference for plant-based and fibre-rich foods, and gender differences in food choices persist even among active adults. These findings highlight the need to consider both sports participation and gender when designing nutritional interventions. Full article

Avocado (Persea americana), originally from Mesoamerica, has emerged as a focus of intense scientific and industrial interest due to its unique combination of nutritional richness, bioactive potential, and technological versatility. Its pulp, widely consumed across the globe, is notably abundant in monounsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, which can comprise over two-thirds of its lipid content. In addition, it provides significant levels of dietary fiber, fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E and K, carotenoids, tocopherols, and phytosterols like β-sitosterol. These constituents are consistently associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, glycemic regulatory, and cardioprotective effects, supported by a growing body of experimental and clinical evidence. This review offers a comprehensive and critical synthesis of the chemical composition and functional properties of avocado, with particular emphasis on its lipid profile, phenolic compounds, and phytosterols. It also explores recent advances in environmentally sustainable extraction techniques, including ultrasound-assisted and microwave-assisted processes, as well as the application of natural deep eutectic solvents. These technologies have demonstrated improved efficiency in recovering bioactives while aligning with the principles of green chemistry. The use of avocado-derived ingredients in nanostructured delivery systems and their incorporation into functional foods, cosmetics, and health-promoting formulations is discussed in detail. Additionally, the potential of native cultivars and the application of precision nutrition strategies are identified as promising avenues for future innovation. Taken together, the findings underscore the avocado’s relevance as a high-value matrix for sustainable development. Future research should focus on optimizing extraction protocols, clarifying pharmacokinetic behavior, and ensuring long-term safety in diverse applications. Full article

The aim was to investigate the genetic effects of a SNP located in the precursor region of gga-miR-3528. (1) Single-nucleotide polymorphisms within precursor regions of microRNAs play crucial biological roles. (2) Utilizing a Gushi–Anka F2 resource population (n = 860), we screened and validated miRNA SNPs. A SNP mutation in the miR-3528 precursor region was identified. Specific primers were designed to amplify the polymorphic fragment. Genotyping was performed for this individual SNP across the population, using the MassArray system. Association analyses were conducted between this SNP and chicken growth and body measurement traits, carcass traits, meat quality traits, and serum enzyme activities. (3) The rs14098602 (+12 bp A > G) was identified within the precursor region of gga-miR-3528. Significant associations (p < 0.05) were observed between this SNP and chicken growth traits (body weight at the age of 0 day, body weight at the age of 2 weeks, and body weight at the age of 4 weeks), carcass traits (evisceration weight), meat quality traits (subcutaneous fat rate and pectoral muscle density), and serum enzyme activities (total protein, albumin, globulin, cholinesterase, and lactate dehydrogenase). (4) These findings suggest that the polymorphism at rs14098602 may influence chicken growth, meat quality, and serum biochemical indices, through specific mechanisms. The gga-miR-3528 gene likely plays an important role in chicken development. Therefore, this SNP can serve as a molecular marker for genetic breeding and auxiliary selection of growth-related traits, facilitating the rapid establishment of elite chicken populations with superior genetic resources. Fat embolism is a critical medical emergency often resulting from long bone fractures or amputations, leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, a key regulator of innate immunity, is activated by reactive oxygen species and tissue damage, contributing to inflammatory responses. This study examines the role of NLRP3 in fat embolism-induced ARDS and evaluates the therapeutic potential of MCC950, a selective NLRP3 antagonist. Fat embolism was induced by fatty micelle injection into the tail vein of Sprague Dawley rats. Pulmonary injury was assessed through lung weight gain as an edema indicator, NLRP3 expression via Western blot, and IL-1β levels using ELISA. Histological damage and macrophage infiltration were evaluated with hematoxylin and eosin staining. Fat embolism significantly increased pulmonary NLRP3 expression, lipid peroxidation, IL-1β release, and macrophage infiltration within four hours, accompanied by severe pulmonary edema. NLRP3 was localized in type I alveolar cells, co-localizing with aquaporin 5. Administration of MCC950 significantly reduced inflammatory responses, lipid peroxidation, pulmonary edema, and histological damage, while attenuating MAPK cascade phosphorylation of ERK and Raf. These findings suggest that NLRP3 plays a critical role in fat embolism-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome, and its inhibition by MCC950 may offer a promising therapeutic approach. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with early-life origins. Maternal obesity has been associated with increased ASD risk, yet the mechanisms and timing of susceptibility remain unclear. Using a mouse model combining in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer, we separated the effects of pre-conception and gestational obesity. We found that maternal high fat diet (HFD) exposure prior to conception alone was sufficient to induce ASD-like behaviors in male offspring—including altered vocalizations, reduced sociability, and increased repetitive grooming—without anxiety-related changes. These phenotypes were absent in female offspring and those exposed only during gestation. Cortical transcriptome analysis revealed dysregulation and isoform shifts in genes implicated in ASD, including Homer1 and Zswim6. Whole-genome bisulfite sequencing of hippocampal tissue showed hypomethylation of an alternative Homer1 promoter, correlating with increased expression of the short isoform Homer1a, which is known to disrupt synaptic scaffolding. This pattern was specific to mice with ASD-like behaviors. Our findings show that pre-conceptional maternal obesity can lead to lasting, isoform-specific transcriptomic and epigenetic changes in the offspring’s brain. These results underscore the importance of maternal health before pregnancy as a critical and modifiable factor in ASD risk. Full article

The kallikrein–kinin system and its B1 and B2 receptors are key regulators in metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes, and insulin resistance. Obesity, a chronic and multifactorial condition often associated with comorbidities like type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemia, remains poorly understood at the metabolic level. The kinin B2 receptor (B2R) is involved in blood pressure regulation and glucose metabolism, promoting glucose uptake in skeletal muscle via bradykinin. Studies in B2R-KO mice demonstrate that the absence of this receptor predisposes animals to glucose intolerance under a high-fat diet and impairs adaptive thermogenesis, indicating a protective role for B2R in metabolic homeostasis and insulin sensitivity. In contrast, the kinin B1 receptor (B1R) is inducible under pathological conditions and is activated by kinin metabolites. Mouse models lacking B1R exhibit improved metabolic profiles, including protection against high-fat diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance, enhanced energy expenditure, and increased leptin sensitivity. B1R inactivation in adipocytes enhances insulin responsiveness and glucose tolerance, supporting its role in the development of insulin resistance. Moreover, B1R deficiency improves energy metabolism and thermogenic responses to adrenergic and cold stimuli, promoting the activation of brown adipose tissue and the browning of white adipose tissue. Collectively, these findings suggest that B1R and B2R represent promising therapeutic targets for the treatment of metabolic disorders. Full article

Background: Menopause increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) accompanied by a decline in muscle function. Myokines, released by skeletal muscle, could play a significant role in cardiovascular health. Objectives and Methods: This study aimed to investigate the changes induced by a 16-week resistance training (RT) program and/or the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich n-3 PUFA supplementation on myokine and cytokine circulating levels and to study their associations with parameters of body composition, muscle function, and glucose and lipid serum markers in postmenopausal women with overweight/obesity. Results: At baseline, interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were positively correlated with body fat and with tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels and negatively associated with meterorin-like (METRNL) levels. Moreover, METRNL was inversely associated with insulin levels and with HOMA-IR. After the intervention, muscle quality improved with either treatment but more notably in response to RT. N-3 supplementation caused significant improvements in cardiometabolic health markers. TNF-α decreased in all experimental groups. Myostatin levels decreased in the RT and in the n-3 groups, and IL-6 increased in the n-3+RT group. Lastly, no interactions between treatments were observed. Conclusions: In postmenopausal women with overweight or obesity, RT could help improve skeletal muscle function, while DHA-rich n-3 supplementation might decrease CVD risk and might potentially improve muscle function. The modulation of myokine levels could be underlying some of the effects of DHA or RT; however, further research is necessary. Full article

Obesity remains a major global health challenge with limited therapeutic options. Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme complex derived from pineapple, has been recognized for its natural anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, and appetite-suppressing properties. This study aimed to investigate the effects of bromelain on hypothalamic neuropeptides and metabolic markers in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity model in rats. Thirty-six male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four groups: standard diet (SD), standard diet with bromelain (SDBro), high-fat diet (HFD), and high-fat diet with bromelain (HFDBro). Obesity was induced by a 3-month HFD regimen, followed by bromelain supplementation (200 mg/kg/day, orally) for one month. Hypothalamic tissues were analyzed via ELISA for neuropeptide Y (NPY), pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2), fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2), and insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R). While NPY levels showed no significant changes, POMC increased in the HFD and was normalized with bromelain. GLUT2 was downregulated in the HFD and significantly restored by bromelain. FGF2 levels remained unchanged. IGF1R was upregulated in the HFD but reduced by bromelain, with an unexpected increase in SDBro. Overall, bromelain partially reversed HFD-induced disruptions in hypothalamic energy-regulating pathways, particularly affecting GLUT2 and POMC. These findings highlight bromelain’s potential role in central metabolic regulation under dietary stress. Full article

Background: Western dietary patterns worldwide are increasingly dominated by energy-dense, nutrient-deficient industrial foods, often identified as ultra-processed foods (UPFs). Such products may have detrimental health implications, particularly if nutritionally inadequate. This study aimed to examine the intake of unhealthy UPFs among children and adolescents from five Mediterranean countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Egypt, and Lebanon) involved in the DELICIOUS project and to assess the association with dietary quality indicators. Methods: A survey was conducted with a sample of 2011 parents of children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years to evaluate their dietary habits. Diet quality was assessed using the Youth Healthy Eating Index (Y-HEI), the KIDMED index to determine adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and compliance with national dietary guidelines. Results: Increased UPF consumption was not inherently associated with healthy or unhealthy specific food groups, although children and adolescents who consumed UPF daily were less likely to exhibit high overall diet quality and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. In all five countries, greater UPF intake was associated with poorer compliance with dietary recommendations concerning fats, sweets, meat, and legumes. Conclusions: Increased UPF consumption among Mediterranean children and adolescents is associated with an unhealthy dietary pattern, possibly marked by a high intake of fats, sweets, and meat, and a low consumption of legumes. Background: Resistance training (RT) promotes muscle hypertrophy and strength gains in both men and women. However, sex differences in neuromuscular performance, muscle fiber composition, and the hormonal environment influence strength and power adaptations. While men generally exhibit greater absolute and relative strength, it remains unclear to what extent these differences persist across various load intensities. A better understanding of sex-specific strength and power profiles may help optimize training strategies. The aim of this study was to compare strength and power performance during the bench press exercise in physically active males and females, relative to body mass and fat-free mass (FFM). Methods: Twenty-nine physically active individuals (16 men: 21.3 ± 4.1 years, 13 women: 22.6 ± 4.9 years) performed a one-repetition maximum (1RM) test and an incremental velocity-based assessment at 45%, 55%, 65%, 75%, and 85% of the 1RM using a Smith machine. The barbell velocity was measured via a linear transducer, with the mean propulsive velocity (MPV) recorded for each load. Power-related variables (e.g., peak force [F0], maximal velocity [V0], and maximal power [Pmax]) were analyzed. To account for differences in body composition, data were adjusted for body mass and FFM. Results: Men exhibited significantly greater strength and power than women across most loads when adjusted for both body mass and fat-free mass (FFM) (p < 0.05). These differences were particularly pronounced when normalized to FFM (45–75%1RM; p = 0.001–0.031), with large effect sizes observed (ηp2 = 0.185–0.383). Notably, sex differences in mean propulsive velocity (MPV) disappeared at 85%1RM (p = 0.208; ηp2 = 0.06), suggesting that maximal neuromuscular recruitment may minimize sex-related disparities at higher intensities. Furthermore, men demonstrated significantly higher values in six of the seven power-related variables, with no significant differences in the %1RM required to achieve an optimal power output. Conclusions: These findings confirm that men exhibit greater strength and power than women, even after adjusting for body composition. However, at high relative loads (≥85%1RM), sex differences in movement velocity appear to diminish, likely due to similar recruitment patterns of high-threshold motor units. These results highlight the importance of sex-specific resistance training programs, particularly in relation to load prescription and the application of velocity-based training methods. Full article

Enteroendocrine cells (EECs) are specialized secretory cells in the gut epithelium that differentiate from intestinal stem cells (ISCs). Mature EECs secrete incretin hormones that stimulate pancreatic insulin secretion and regulate appetite. Decreased EEC numbers and impaired secretion of the incretin glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) have been implicated in obesity-associated metabolic complications. Gut microbial metabolites of dietary tryptophan (TRP) were recently shown to modulate ISC proliferation and differentiation. However, their specific effects on EEC differentiation are not known. We hypothesized that the gut microbial metabolites of dietary tryptophan counteract impaired GLP1 production and function in obesity by stimulating EEC differentiation from ISCs. We utilized complementary models of human and rat intestines to determine the effects of obesity or TRP metabolites on EEC differentiation. EEC differentiation was assessed by the EEC marker chromogranin A (CHGA) levels in the intestinal mucosa of normal versus obese rats. The effects of TRP metabolites on EEC differentiation were determined in human intestinal organoids treated with indole, a primary TRP metabolite, or the culture supernatant of Lactobacillus acidophilus grown in TRP media (LA-CS-TRP). Our results showed that the mRNA and protein levels of CHGA, the EEC marker, were significantly decreased (~60%) in the intestinal mucosa of high-fat-diet-induced obese rat intestines. The expression of the transcription factors that direct the ISC differentiation towards the EEC lineage was also decreased in obesity. In human organoids, treatment with indole or LA-CS-TRP significantly increased (more than 2-fold) CHGA levels, which were blocked by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) antagonist CH-223191. Thus, the stimulation of EEC differentiation by colonic microbial metabolites highlights a novel therapeutic role of TRP metabolites in obesity and associated metabolic disorders. Full article

This experiment examined whether multiparous sows fed a diet lower in energy and lysine at a reduced feed allowance would still mobilise fat and (or) protein to support piglet growth and negatively impact subsequent reproductive performance. A total of 152 multiparous sows was allocated in a 2 × 2 factorial design with the respective factors being diet type fed in lactation (gestation, 13.0 MJ digestible energy (DE)/kg, 0.42 g standardised ileal digestible (SID) lysine/MJ DE; or lactation, 14.3 MJ DE/kg, 0.62 g SID lysine/MJ DE) and feed allowance (ad libitum or 7.5 kg/d, ~15% reduction on ad libitum intake). Body composition was estimated on the day after farrowing (day 2) and at weaning (day 21). Blood was collected on days 2, 21 and at standing heat, for the analysis of insulin and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Diet type did not alter (p > 0.05) bodyweight or P2 backfat depth change in lactation, estimated body fat and protein changes, litter growth, or subsequent total piglets born. Ad libitum-fed sows showed a significant gain in girth compared to sows offered 7.5 kg/d (2.9 versus −0.4 mm, p = 0.015) and had a tendency for a shorter wean-to-service interval (p < 0.10). Sows fed the lactation diet had higher insulin concentrations at weaning (p < 0.05), but levels were the same (p > 0.10) by heat detection; IGF-1 concentrations remained unaffected. These data indicate that imposing a calculated negative energy and lysine balance on lactating sows had a limited impact on lactation or subsequent reproductive performance, supporting the notion that the modern sow may be more resilient to nutritional impositions than has been historically reported. Childhood obesity is a substantial health problem worldwide. The origin of obesity (increased adiposity) can be partly traced back to intrauterine life. However, the determinants of fetal fat deposition remain unclear. This study investigated the association between cord blood adipocytokines related to lipid metabolism (leptin, adiponectin, and insulin-like growth factor-1 [IGF-1]) and fetal adiposity during gestation. A prospective study was conducted in a cohort of 94 singleton pregnancies. Fetal ultrasonography was performed at 24, 30, and 36 weeks of gestation. Estimated fetal adiposity (EFA) was calculated by integrating measurements of cross-sectional arm and thigh fat area percentages and anterior abdominal wall thickness. Plasma cytokine levels and C-peptide immunoreactivity (as a proxy for fetal insulin resistance) were evaluated in cord blood samples obtained at delivery. The associations of cord blood leptin, adiponectin and IGF-1 levels with EFA at 24, 30, and 36 weeks were determined by multiple linear regression, adjusted for potential covariates. The multivariate analyses indicated that leptin was significantly correlated with EFA at 30 and 36 weeks. Leptin was also positively correlated with C-peptide immunoreactivity in the umbilical cord. Cord adiponectin levels were not associated with EFA across gestation. Cord IGF-1 levels were significantly correlated with EFA and estimated fetal body weight (EFW) at 36 weeks. In conclusion, cord leptin was associated with EFA at 30 and 36 weeks, and IGF-1 was associated with EFA at 36 and EFW at 36 weeks. In Conclusion, cord leptin was associated with EFA at 30 and 36 weeks, and IGF-1 was associated with EFA and EFW at 36 weeks. Considering the effects of leptin and IGF-1 on fetal insulin resistance and lipid metabolism, increased levels of leptin and IGF-1 are potential plasma biomarkers of increased fetal adiposity, which may predispose to infant obesity and metabolic dysfunction in later life. Relating Anthropometric Profile to Countermovement Jump Performance and External Match Load in Mexican National Team Soccer Players: An Exploratory Study

Background/Objectives: The role of body composition in sports performance has been widely studied, particularly in soccer. Understanding how anthropometric characteristics impact movement efficiency and neuromuscular performance is crucial for optimizing player performance. This study examined the relationship between body composition and locomotor performance in elite soccer players. Methods: Thirty-six male soccer players from the Mexican National Team participated in the study, where body composition was assessed using surface anthropometry. Players underwent tests to measure countermovement jump (CMJ) performance, sprinting speed, maximum acceleration, and distance covered during two games of the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals. Correlation matrices were created to identify the most significant associations, followed by generalized linear models (GLMs) to associate body composition variables with performance metrics. Results: Anthropometric profile tables were created by playing position. Higher body fat percentage (%BF) was associated with lower performance. Specifically, higher %BF was associated with slower sprint speed (B = −0.74 m/s, p < 0.001) and shorter distance covered (B = −4.86 m/min, p < 0.001). Conversely, greater muscularity, reflected by corrected girth values for the thigh and calf, was associated with improved CMJ performance. Thigh corrected girth was positively associated with concentric mean force (B = 48.85 N, p < 0.001), and calf corrected girth was positively associated with peak power (B = 240.50 W, p < 0.001). These findings underscore the importance of low body fat and high lean mass for efficient movement. Conclusions: The results highlight the critical role of body composition in enhancing soccer performance, particularly for explosive movements like jumps, sprints, and accelerations. This study suggests that monitoring and optimizing body composition should be a central focus of nutrition, training, and conditioning strategies, adapted to the specific positional demands of professional soccer. The call for new approaches to prevent and treat metabolic syndrome-related diseases has led to research on the use of lacto-fermentative probiotics with beneficial metabolic properties like Lactobacilli. Here, we characterize the probiotic properties of a novel strain, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CNTA 628, and investigate its potential anti-obesity and health-promoting activities in the Caenorhabditis elegans model, additionally elucidating the molecular mechanisms involved. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CNTA 628 exhibited sensitivity to the entire spectrum of antibiotics analyzed, gastric and intestinal resistance in vitro, β-galactosidase and bile-salt hydrolysate activities, and the capacity to form biofilms and produce SCFAs. In addition, it reduced the binding of the pathogenic E. coli O157:H7 to intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2) and exerted immune-modulating effects in cellular models. Supplementation with this probiotic significantly reduced C. elegans fat accumulation by more than 18% under control and high-glucose conditions, lowered senescence, improved oxidative stress, and significantly enhanced lifespan without affecting the development of the worms. Gene expression analyses evidenced that L. plantarum CNTA 628 plays a role in regulating daf-22 and maoc-1 gene expression, both linked to beta-oxidation pathways. Our results demonstrate the health-benefiting properties of this novel strain and suggest its potential as probiotic candidate for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome-related conditions.
