Vortex-induced vibrations (VIVs) pose significant risks to the structural integrity of subsea cables and pipelines under free-span conditions. It is extremely helpful to be able to screen for VIV and understand for a particular cable or pipeline what the minimum free-span threshold lengths are beyond which in-line and/or cross-flow VIV can be excited, causing fatigue problems. To date screening is a more complex and detailed task. This paper introduces a universal dimensionless velocity, V*, and one graph that can be used across all types of VIV free spans to quickly assess minimum free-span threshold lengths. Natural frequencies are not required to be calculated for screening each time, as they are implicit in the curve. The universal criteria are developed via non-dimensional analysis to establish the significant physical mechanisms, after which the relationships are populated, forming a single curve for in-line and for cross-flow VIV with a typical mass ratio and a conservative zero as-laid tension case. FeAl intermetallic compounds exhibit high application potential in high-voltage transmission lines to withstand external forces such as powerlines’ own gravity and wind force. The ordered crystal structure in FeAl intermetallic compounds endows materials with high strength, but the remarkable brittleness at room temperature restricts engineering applications. This contradiction is essentially closely related to the deformation mechanism at the nanoscale. Here, we performed molecular dynamics simulations to reveal anomalous grain size effects and deformation mechanisms in nanocrystalline FeAl intermetallic material. Models with grain sizes ranging from 6.2 to 17.4 nm were systematically investigated under uniaxial tensile stress. The study uncovers a distinctive inverse Hall-Petch relationship governing flow stress within the nanoscale regime. This behavior stems from high-density grain boundaries promoting dislocation annihilation over pile-up. Crucially, the material exhibits anomalous ductility at ultra-high strain rates due to stress-induced phase transformation dominating the plastic deformation. The nascent FCC phase accommodates strain through enhanced slip systems and inherent low stacking fault energy with the increasing phase fraction paralleling the stress plateau. Nanoconfinement suppresses the propagation of macroscopic defects while simultaneously suppressing room-temperature brittle fracture and inhibiting the rapid phase transformation pathways at extreme strain rates. These findings provide new theoretical foundations for designing high-strength and high-toughness intermetallic nanocompounds. Full article

Variable-thrust liquid rocket engines are essential for precision landing in deep-space exploration, reusable launch vehicle recovery, high-accuracy orbital maneuvers, and emergency obstacle evasions of space drones. However, with the increasingly complex space missions, challenges remain with the development of different technical schemes. In view of these issues, this paper systematically reviews the technology’s evolution through mechanical throttling, electromechanical precision regulation, and commercial space-driven deep throttling. Then, the development of key variable thrust technologies for liquid rocket engines is summarized from the perspective of thrust regulation and control strategy. For instance, thrust regulation requires synergistic flow control devices and adjustable pintle injectors to dynamically match flow rates with injection pressure drops, ensuring combustion stability across wide thrust ranges—particularly under extreme conditions during space drones’ high-maneuver orbital adjustments—though pintle injector optimization for such scenarios remains challenging. System control must address strong multivariable coupling, response delays, and high-disturbance environments, as well as bottlenecks in sensor reliability and nonlinear modeling. Furthermore, prospects are made in response to the research progress, and breakthroughs are required in cryogenic wide-range flow regulation for liquid oxygen-methane propellants, combustion stability during deep throttling, and AI-based intelligent control to support space drones’ autonomous orbital transfer, rapid reusability, and on-demand trajectory correction in complex deep-space missions. The rapid development of high-power-density semiconductor devices has rendered conventional thermal management techniques inadequate for handling their extreme heat fluxes. This manuscript presents and implements an embedded microchannel cooling solution for such devices. By directly integrating micropillar arrays within the near-junction region of the substrate, efficient forced convection and flow boiling mechanisms are achieved. Finite element analysis was first employed to conduct thermo–fluid–structure simulations of micropillar arrays with different geometries. Subsequently, based on our simulation results, a complete multilayer microstructure fabrication process was developed and integrated, including critical steps such as deep reactive ion etching (DRIE), surface hydrophilic/hydrophobic functionalization, and gold–stannum (Au-Sn) eutectic bonding. Finally, an experimental test platform was established to systematically evaluate the thermal performance of the fabricated devices under heat fluxes of up to 1200 W/cm2. Our experimental results demonstrate that this solution effectively maintains the device operating temperature at 46.7 °C, achieving a mere 27.9 K temperature rise and exhibiting exceptional thermal management capabilities. This manuscript provides a feasible, efficient technical pathway for addressing extreme heat dissipation challenges in next-generation electronic devices, while offering notable references in structural design, micro/nanofabrication, and experimental validation for related fields. Wastewater generation is a growing concern in the preliminary treatment of heavy crude oil and tar sand. The separation of fine oil droplets from water by flotation is a critical process in the production of bitumen from tar sand. The flow structure from a high-resolution simulation of a single air macrobubble (>3 mm diameter) rising through water in the presence of a very dilute dispersion of mono-sized oil microdroplets (30 μm) under quiescent conditions is presented. A combined model of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase approach, and the discrete phase method (DPM) was developed to simulate bubble dynamics, the trajectories of the dispersed oil droplet, and the interaction between the air bubble and the oil droplet in quiescent water. The CFD–VOF–DPM combined model reproduced the interacting dynamics of the bubble and oil droplets in water at the bubble–droplet scale. With an extremely large diameter ratio between the bubble and the dispersed oil droplet, this model clearly demonstrated that the dominant mechanism for the interaction was the hydrodynamic capture of oil droplets in the wake of a rising air macrobubble. The entrainment of the oil droplets into the wake of the rising bubbles was strongly influenced by the bubble’s shape. Full article

Analyzing the two-phase flow behavior in bearing lubrication is crucial for understanding friction and wear mechanisms, optimizing lubrication design, and improving bearing operational efficiency and reliability. However, the complexity of oil–air two-phase flow in high-speed bearings poses significant research challenges. Currently, there is a lack of comparative studies employing different simulation strategies to address this issue, leaving a gap in evidence-based guidance for selecting appropriate simulation approaches in practical applications. This study begins with a comparative analysis between experimental and simulation results to validate the reliability of the adopted simulation approach. Subsequently, a comparative evaluation of different simulation methods is conducted to provide a scientific basis for relevant decision-making. Evaluated from three dimensions—adaptability to rotational speed conditions, research focuses (oil distribution and power loss), and computational economy—the findings reveal that FVM excels at medium-to-high speeds, accurately predicting continuous oil film distribution and power loss, while MPS, leveraging its meshless Lagrangian characteristics, demonstrates superior capability in describing physical phenomena under extreme conditions, albeit with higher computational costs. Economically, FVM, supported by mature software ecosystems and parallel computing optimization, is more suitable for industrial design applications, whereas MPS, being more reliant on high-performance hardware, is better suited for academic research and customized scenarios. The study further proposes that future research could adopt an FVM-MPS coupled approach to balance efficiency and precision, offering a new paradigm for multi-scale lubrication analysis in bearings. The article presents a new AM (Additive Manufacturing) process development, necessary to repair parts made from Aluminum 6061 material, with T6 treatment. The laser Directed Energy Deposition (DED) and Extreme High-Speed Directed Energy Deposition (EHLA) capabilities are evaluated for repairing Al large components. To optimize the process parameters, single-track depositions were analyzed for both laser-powder DED (feed rate of 2 m/min) and EHLA (feed rate 20 m/min) for AlSi10Mg and Al6061 powders. The cross-sections of single tracks revealed the bonding characteristics and provided laser-powder DED, a suitable parameter selection for the repair. Three damage types were identified on the Al component to define the specification of the repair process and to highlight the capabilities of laser-powder DED and EHLA in repairing intricate surface scratches and dents. Our research is based on variation of the powder mass flow and beam power, studying the influence of these parameters on the weld bead geometry and bonding quality. The evaluation criteria include bonding defects, crack formation, porosity, and dilution zone depth. The bidirectional path planning strategy was applied with a fly-in and fly-out path for the hatching adjustment and acceleration distance. Samples were etched for a qualitative microstructure analysis, and the HV hardness was tested. The novelty of the paper is the new process parameters for laser-powder DED and EHLA deposition strategies to repair large Al components (6061 T6), using AlSi10Mg and Al6061 powder. Our experimental research tested the defect-free deposition and the compatibility of AlSi10Mg on the Al6061 substrate. The readers could replicate the method presented in this article to repair by laser-powder DED/EHLA large Al parts and avoid the replacement of Al components with new ones. Full article

An Approach to Improve Land–Water Salt Flux Modeling in the San Francisco Estuary

In this case study, we used the Delta Simulation Model II (DSM2) to study the salt balance at the land–water interface in the river delta of California’s San Francisco Estuary. Drainage, a source of water and salt for adjacent channels in the study area, is affected by channel salinity. The DSM2 approach has been adopted by several hydrodynamic models of the estuary to enforce water volume balance between diversions, evapotranspiration and drainage at the land–water interface, but does not explicitly enforce salt balance. We found deviations from salt balance to be quite large, albeit variable in magnitude due to the heterogeneity of hydrodynamic and salinity conditions across the study area. We implemented a procedure that approximately enforces salt balance through iterative updates of the baseline drain salinity boundary conditions (termed loose coupling). We found a reasonable comparison with field measurements of drainage salinity. In particular, the adjusted boundary conditions appear to capture the range of observed interannual variability better than the baseline periodic estimates. The effect of the iterative adjustment procedure on channel salinity showed substantial spatial variability: locations dominated by large flows were minimally impacted, and in lower flow channels, deviations between baseline and adjusted channel salinity series were notable, particularly during the irrigation season. This approach, which has the potential to enhance the simulation of extreme salinity intrusion events (when high channel salinity significantly impacts drainage salinity), is essential for robustly modeling hydrodynamic conditions that pre-date contemporary water management infrastructure. We discuss limitations associated with this approach and recommend that—for this case study—further improvements could best be accomplished through code modification rather than coupling of transport and island water balance models. Transpiration cooling that utilizes the phase change of a liquid coolant is recognized as an effective thermal protection technique for extreme environments. However, the introduction of phase change within the porous structure brings about challenges, such as vapor blockage, pressure fluctuations, and temperature inversion, which critically influence system reliability. This study conducts numerical analyses of coupled processes of heat transfer, flow, and phase change in transpiration cooling using a Two-Phase Mixture Model. The simulation incorporates a Local Thermal Non-Equilibrium approach to capture the distinct temperature fields of the solid and fluid phases, enabling accurate prediction of the thermal response within two-phase and single-phase regions. The results reveal that under low heat flux, dominant capillary action suppresses dry-out and expands the two-phase region. Conversely, high heat flux causes vaporization to overwhelm the capillary supply, forming a superheated vapor layer and constricting the two-phase zone. The analysis also explains a paradoxical pressure drop, where an initial increase in flow rate reduces pressure loss by suppressing the high-viscosity vapor phase. Furthermore, a local temperature inversion, where the fluid becomes hotter than the solid matrix, is identified and attributed to vapor counterflow and its subsequent condensation. Full article

The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase. Full article

Topical drug administration is a common method of delivering medications to the eye to treat various ocular conditions, including glaucoma, dry eye, and inflammation. Drug efficacy following topical administration, including the drug’s distribution within the eye, absorption and elimination rates, and physiological responses can be predicted using physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling. High-resolution computational models of the eye are desirable to improve simulations of drug delivery; however, these approaches can have long run times. In this study, a fast-running computational quasi-3D (Q3D) model of the human tear film was developed to account for absorption, blinking, drainage, and evaporation. Visualization of blinking mechanics and flow distributions throughout the tear film were enabled using this Q3D approach. Average drug absorption throughout the tear film subregions was quantified using a high-resolution compartment model based on a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Simulations were validated by comparing them with experimental data from topical administration of 0.1% dexamethasone suspension in the tear film (R2 = 0.76, RMSE = 8.7, AARD = 28.8%). Overall, the Q3D tear film model accounts for critical mechanistic factors (e.g., blinking and drainage) not previously included in fast-running models. Further, this work demonstrated methods toward improved computational efficiency, where central processing unit (CPU) time was decreased while maintaining accuracy. Building upon this work, this Q3D approach applied to the tear film will allow for more seamless integration into full-body models, which will be an extremely valuable tool in the development of treatments for ocular conditions. A model for the flow and thermal explosion of a micropolar gas is investigated, assuming the equation of state for a real gas. This model describes the dynamics of a gas mixture (fuel and oxidant) undergoing a one-step irreversible chemical reaction. The real gas model is particularly suitable in this context because it more accurately reflects reality under extreme conditions, such as high temperatures and high pressures. Micropolarity introduces local rotational dynamic effects of particles dispersed within the gas mixture. In this paper, we first derive the initial-boundary value system of partial differential equations (PDEs) under the assumption of spherical symmetry and homogeneous boundary conditions. We explain the underlying physical relationships and then construct a corresponding approximate system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using the Faedo–Galerkin projection. The existence of solutions for the full PDE model is established by analyzing the limit of the solutions of the ODE system using a priori estimates and compactness theory. Additionally, we propose a numerical scheme for the problem based on the same approximate system. Finally, numerical simulations are performed and discussed in both physical and mathematical contexts. Full article

Southeast Asia relies heavily on hydropower from dams and reservoir projects, but this dependence comes at the cost of ecological damage and increased vulnerability to extreme events. This dilemma necessitates a choice between continued dam development and adopting alternative renewable options. Concerns over these environmental impacts have already led to halts in dam construction across the region. This study assesses the potential of run-of-river hydropower plants (RHPs) across 199 hydrometric stations in Mainland Southeast Asia (MSEA). The assessment utilizes power duration curves for the historical period and projections from the HBV hydrological model, which is driven by an ensemble of 31 climate models for future scenarios. Energy production was analyzed at four levels (minimum, maximum, balanced, and optimal) for both historical and future periods under varying Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). To promote sustainable development, environmental flow constraints and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were evaluated for both historical and projected periods. The results indicate that the aggregate energy production potential during the historical period ranges from 111.15 to 229.62 MW (Malaysia), 582.78 to 3615.36 MW (Myanmar), 555.47 to 3142.46 MW (Thailand), 1067.05 to 6401.25 MW (Laos), 28.07 to 189.77 MW (Vietnam), and 566.13 to 2803.75 MW (Cambodia). The impact of climate change on power production varies significantly across countries, depending on the level and scenarios. At the optimal level, an average production change of −9.2–5.9% is projected for the near future, increasing to 15.3–19% in the far future. Additionally, RHP development in MSEA is estimated to avoid 32.5 Mt of CO2 emissions at the optimal level. The analysis further shows avoidance change of 8.3–25.3% and −8.6–25.3% under SSP245 and SSP585, respectively. Full article

Flooding due to dam failures is a critical issue with significant impacts on human safety, infrastructure, and the environment. This study assessed the potential flood hazard that could be generated from breaching of the Alacranes dam in Villa Clara, Cuba. Thirteen reservoir breaching scenarios were simulated under several criteria for modeling the flood wave through the 2D Saint Venant equations using the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). A sensitivity analysis was performed on Manning’s roughness coefficient, demonstrating a low variability of the model outputs for these events. The results show that, for all modeled scenarios, the terrain topography of the coastal plain expands the flood wave, reaching a maximum width of up to 105,057 km. The most critical scenario included a 350 m breach in just 0.67 h. Flood, velocity, and hazard maps were generated, identifying populated areas potentially affected by the flooding events. The reported depths, velocities, and maximum flows could pose extreme danger to infrastructure and populated areas downstream. These types of studies are crucial for both risk assessment and emergency planning in the event of a potential dam breach. Full article

To address the challenge of dispatching emergency resources for community residents under extreme ice disaster, this paper proposes an emergency resource dispatch strategy based on pre-disaster prediction and dynamic scheduling. First, the fast Newman algorithm is employed to cluster communities, optimizing the preprocessing of resource scheduling and reducing scheduling costs. Subsequently, mobile energy storage vehicles and mobile water storage vehicles are introduced based on the ice disaster trajectory prediction to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of post-disaster resource supply. A grouped scheduling strategy is adopted to reduce cross-regional resource flow, and the dispatch routes of mobile energy storage and water vehicles are dynamically adjusted based on real-time traffic network conditions. Simulations on the IEEE-33 node system validate the feasibility and advantages of the proposed strategies. The results demonstrate that the grouped dispatch and scheduling strategies increase user satisfaction by 24.73%, average state of charge (SOC) by 30.23%, and water storage by 31.88% compared to global scheduling. These improvements significantly reduce the cost of community energy self-sustainability, enhance the satisfaction of community residents, and ensure system stability across various disaster scenarios.
