Understanding the differential impacts of emission sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on formaldehyde (HCHO) levels is pivotal to effectively mitigating key photochemical radical precursors, thereby enhancing the regulation of atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) and ozone formation. This investigation systematically selected and analyzed year-long VOC measurements across three urban zones in Shenzhen, China. Photochemical age correction methods were implemented to develop the initial concentrations of VOCs before source apportionment; then Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) modeling resolved six primary sources: solvent usage (28.6–47.9%), vehicle exhaust (24.2–31.2%), biogenic emission (13.8–18.1%), natural gas (8.5–16.3%), gasoline evaporation (3.2–8.9%), and biomass burning (0.3–2.4%). A machine learning (ML) framework incorporating Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) was subsequently applied to evaluate the influence of six emission sources on HCHO concentrations while accounting for reaction time adjustments. This machine learning-driven nonlinear analysis demonstrated that vehicle exhaust nearly always emerged as the primary anthropogenic contributor in diverse functional zones and different seasons, with gasoline evaporation as another key contributor, while the traditional reactivity metric method, ozone formation potential (OFP), tended to underestimate the role of the two sources. This study highlights the primacy of strengthening emission reduction of transportation sectors to mitigate HCHO pollution in megacities. Full article

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is increasingly used as a marine fuel due to its capacity to significantly reduce emissions of particulate matter, sulfur oxides (SOx), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), compared to conventional fuels. In addition, LNG combustion produces less carbon dioxide (CO2) than conventional marine fuels, and the use of non-fossil LNG offers further potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, this benefit can be partially offset by methane slip—the release of unburned methane in engine exhaust—which has a much higher global warming potential than CO2. This study presents an experimental evaluation of methane emissions from a RoPax vessel powered by low-pressure dual-fuel four-stroke engines with a direct mechanical propulsion system. Methane slip was measured directly during onboard testing and combined with a year-long analysis of engine operation using an Engine Load Monitoring (ELM) method. The yearly average methane slip coefficient (Cslip) obtained was 1.57%, slightly lower than values reported in previous studies on cruise ships (1.7%), and significantly lower than the default values specified by the FuelEU (3.1%) Maritime regulation and IMO (3.5%) LCA guidelines. This result reflects the ship’s operational profile, characterized by long crossings at high and stable engine loads. This study provides results that could support more representative emission assessments and can contribute to ongoing regulatory discussions. Full article

Current treatment methods for desulfurization wastewater in the ship exhaust gas cleaning (EGC) system face several problems, including process complexity, unstable performance, large spatial requirements, and high energy consumption. This study investigates rotating dynamic filtration (RDF) as an efficient treatment approach through experimental testing, theoretical analysis, and pilot-scale validation. Flux increases with temperature and pressure but decreases with feed concentration, remaining unaffected by circulation flow. For a small membrane (152 mm), flux consistently increases with rotational speed across all pressures. For a large membrane (374 mm), flux increases with rotational speed at 300 kPa but firstly increases and then decreases at 100 kPa. Filtrate turbidity in all experiments complies with regulatory standards. Due to the unique hydrodynamic characteristics of RDF, back pressure reduces the effective transmembrane pressure, whereas shear force mitigates concentration polarization and cake layer formation. Separation performance is governed by the balance between these two forces. The specific energy consumption of RDF is only 10–30% that of cross-flow filtration (CFF). Under optimized pilot-scale conditions, the wastewater was concentrated 30-fold, with filtrate turbidity consistently below 2 NTU, outperforming CFF. Moreover, continuous operation proves more suitable for marine environments. Full article

The increasing levels of ozone pollution have become a significant environmental issue in urban areas worldwide. Previous studies have confirmed that the urban ozone pollution in China is mainly controlled by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) rather than nitrogen oxides. Therefore, a study on the emission characteristics and source analysis of VOCs is important for controlling urban ozone pollution. In this study, hourly concentrations of 57 VOC species in four groups were obtained in April 2022, a period of high ozone pollution in Kunming, China. The ozone formation potential analysis showed that the accumulated reactive VOCs significantly contributed to the subsequent ozone formation, particularly aromatics (44.16%) and alkanes (32.46%). In addition, the ozone production rate in Kunming is mainly controlled by VOCs based on the results of the empirical kinetic modeling approach (KNOx/KVOCs = 0.25). The hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory model and polar coordinate diagram showed high VOC and ozone concentrations from the southwest outside the province (50.28%) and the south in local areas (12.78%). Six factors were obtained from the positive matrix factorization model: vehicle exhaust (31.80%), liquefied petroleum gas usage (24.16%), the petrochemical industry (17.81%), fuel evaporation (11.79%), coal burning (7.47%), and solvent usage (6.97%). These findings underscore that reducing anthropogenic VOC emissions and strengthening controls on the related sources could provide a scientifically robust strategy for mitigating ozone pollution in Kunming. To ensure the sustainable use of limited resources, it is essential to establish selective and efficient recycling technologies for platinum group metals (PGMs). This study focused on the selective precipitation-based separation of Pt(IV) from hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions in the presence of various metal ions, using trans-1,4-bis(aminomethyl)cyclohexane (BACT) as a precipitating agent. By using BACT, we succeeded in the selective separation of Pt(IV) by precipitation from HCl solutions containing Pd(II) and Rh(III). Notably, selective and efficient recovery of Pt(IV) was accomplished across various HCl concentrations, with a small amount of BACT and within a short shaking time. To evaluate the practical applicability of the method, Pt(IV) was recovered and purified from the HCl leachate of spent automotive exhaust gas purification catalysts using BACT. As a result, a high Pt recovery of 95.6% and a high purity of 99.3% were achieved. Although Pt(IV) was recovered as a precipitate containing BACT, it was found that Pt black could be readily obtained by dissolving the precipitate in HCl solution followed by reduction with sodium borohydride. Detailed structural analysis of the Pt(IV)-containing precipitate revealed that it is an ionic crystal composed of [PtCl6]2− and protonated BACT. The selective formation of this ionic crystal in HCl solution, along with its stability under such conditions, is the key to the selective recovery of Pt(IV) using BACT. Full article

The growing interest in alternative fuels stems from the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development. Despite the dominance of fossil fuels in aviation, pulsejet engines offer a promising platform for testing new fuels due to their simple design and fuel versatility. This study presents a multi-criteria analysis of alternative fuels for use in pulsejet engines, emphasizing environmental impacts. Both gaseous (biogas, ethyne, LPG, and natural gas) and liquid fuels (methanol, ethanol, biodiesel, Jet A-1, and SAF) were examined. Exhaust emissions (CO2, H2O, CO) were simulated in Ansys 2025 based on literature data and chemical calculations. Additional factors analyzed included calorific value, production cost, thermal expansion, density, life cycle emissions (LCA), CO2 emissions per fuel mass, and renewable energy content. Using the zero-unitization method, results were normalized into a single aggregate variable for each fuel. The highest values were recorded for biogas and methanol, respectively, indicating their potential as alternative fuels. The findings support further development of sustainable fuels for pulsejet engines. Future research should address combustion optimization and noise reduction, enhancing viability in aviation and other transport sectors. Integration with the current fuel infrastructure is also recommended to facilitate broader implementation. Full article

This article aims to evaluate the seasonal efficiency of natural gas boilers used in European households, highlighting the cost effectiveness, environmental benefits, and user comfort associated with higher-efficiency models, particularly those based on condensing technology. The study applies a standardized algorithm used in European energy labeling schemes to calculate the seasonal efficiency of household gas boilers. It further includes a comparative analysis of selected boiler models available on the Serbian market and outlines a step-by-step method for estimating gas savings when replacing older, less efficient boilers with modern units. Condensing boilers demonstrate significantly higher seasonal efficiency than standard models by recovering additional heat from exhaust gases. These improved boilers produce lower greenhouse gas emissions and offer annual fuel savings of approximately 10% to 30%, depending on the boiler’s age, system design, and usage patterns. The results also confirm the direct correlation between seasonal efficiency and annual fuel consumption, validating the use of efficiency-based cost comparisons. The analysis focuses on residential gas boilers available in the Serbian market, although the models examined are commonly distributed across Europe. The findings highlight the important role of energy efficiency labels—based on a standardized algorithm—in guiding boiler selection, helping consumers and policymakers make informed decisions that promote energy savings and reduce environmental impact. This article contributes to the theoretical and practical understanding of gas boiler efficiency by integrating algorithm-based evaluation with market data and user-centered considerations. It offers actionable insights for consumers, energy advisors, and policymakers in the context of Europe’s energy transition. Verifying the efficiency calculations of gas boilers requires a careful combination of theoretical methods, measured data, and adherence to standards. Full article

To address severe ammonia gas and dust pollution coupled with resource waste in exhaust gases from urea prilling towers, a production process for gasified biochar-based slow-release fertilizer is proposed to achieve resource recovery of exhaust pollutants. Through phosphoric acid impregnation modification applied to gasified biochar, its ammonia gas adsorption capacity was significantly enhanced, with saturated adsorption capacity increasing from 0.61 mg/g (unmodified) to 32 mg/g. Coupled with the tower-top bag filter, the modified biochar combines with ammonia gas and urea dust in exhaust gases, subsequently forming biochar-based slow-release fertilizer through dehydration and granulation processes. Material balance analysis demonstrates that a single 400,000-ton/year urea prilling tower achieves a daily fertilizer production capacity of 55 tons, with 18% active ingredient content. The nitrogen content can be upgraded to national standards through urea supplementation. Economic analysis demonstrates a total capital investment of USD1.2 million, with an annual net profit of USD0.88 million and a static payback period of 1.36 years. This process not only achieves ammonia gas emission reduction but also converts waste biochar into high-value fertilizer. It displays dual advantages of environmental benefits and economic feasibility and provides an innovative solution for resource utilization of the exhaust gases from the urea prilling process. This study presents a comparative analysis of the water droplet erosion resistance of three compressor wheels coated with Ni-P and Si-P layers. The tests were conducted using a custom-developed experimental apparatus in accordance with the ASTM G73-10 standard. The degree of erosion was monitored through continuous precision mass measurements, and structural changes on the surfaces of both the base materials and the coatings were examined using a Zeiss Crossbeam 350 scanning electron microscope (SEM). Hardness values were determined using a Vickers KB 30 hardness tester, while the chemical composition was analysed using a WAS Foundry Master optical emission spectrometer. Significant differences in erosion resistance were observed among the various compressor wheels, which can be attributed to differences in coating hardness values, as well as to the detachment of the Ni-P layer from the base material under continuous erosion. In all cases, water droplet erosion led to a reduction in the isentropic efficiency of the compressor—measured using a hot gas turbocharger testbench—with the extent of efficiency loss depending upon the type of coating applied. Although blade protection technologies for turbocharger compressor impellers used in the automotive industry have been the subject of only a limited number of studies, modern technologies, such as the application of certain alternative fuels and exhaust gas recirculation, have increased water droplet formation, thereby accelerating the erosion rate of the impeller. A significant portion of energy losses in industrial systems arises from the inefficient use of high-temperature exhaust gases, emphasizing the need for enhanced heat recovery strategies. This study aims to improve energy efficiency by examining the effects of radiation-intensifying inserts on combined radiative and convective heat transfer in flue-gas heated channels. A systematic literature review revealed a research gap in understanding the interaction between these mechanisms in flue-gas heat exchangers. To address this, analytical calculations were conducted for two geometries: a radiation-intensifying plate between parallel plates and the same insert in a circular pipe. The analysis covered a range of gas-flue and wall temperatures (560–1460 K and 303–393 K, respectively), flow velocities, and spectral emissivity values. Key performance metrics included Reynolds and Nusselt numbers to assess flow resistance and heat transfer. Results indicated that flue-gas temperature has the most significant effect on total rate of heat transfer, and the insert significantly enhanced radiative heat transfer by over 60%, increasing flow resistance. A local Nusselt number minimum at a length-to-diameter ratio of approximately 26 suggested transitional flow behavior. These results provide valuable insights for the design of high-temperature heat exchangers, with future work planned to validate the findings experimentally. Full article

Road transport plays a significant role in the economic growth of a country. Conventional internal combustion engines (ICEs) are widely used in automobiles, with an efficiency range of 25% to 35%, while the remaining energy is lost through cooling and exhaust gases. Additionally, two parasitic loads—the alternator and the air conditioning (AC) compressor—are driven by the ICE via a belt, further reducing efficiency. In this paper, energy and exergy analysis of the waste heat of exhaust gases has been performed for automobiles equipped with ICEs, i.e., R06A, F8B, K10B, 2NZ-FE, and 2ZR-FE, to evaluate their potential to drive these parasitic loads. The working cycles of these ICE models were simulated using a zero-dimensional MATLAB model based on fundamental governing equations. The results indicate that approximately 10–40 kW of energy is lost through exhaust gases under varying operating conditions for the examined ICEs. The average exhaust gas temperature and mass flow rate for these ICEs are approximately 900 K and 0.016 kg/s, respectively. Based on these findings, an E-turbine retrofit system is proposed to operate under these conditions, recovering exhaust energy to power the alternator and AC compressor. The results showed that the E-turbine generated 6.8 kW of mechanical power, which was converted into 4 kW of electrical power by the generator. This electrical power was used to supply the parasitic loads, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of ICE. Full article

The awareness of global warming has boosted research on methods to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Livestock buildings, although essential for food production, represent a sustainability challenge due to their high maintenance energy costs, GHG emissions, and impact on the environment and rural landscapes. Since the environment, cultural heritage, and community identity deserve protection, research trends and current knowledge on livestock buildings, building sustainability, energy efficiency strategies, and landscape management were investigated using the Web of Science and Scopus search tools (2005–2025). Research on these topics was found to be uneven, with limited focus on livestock buildings compared to food production and animal welfare, and significant interest in eco-sustainable building materials. A total of 96 articles were selected after evaluating over 5400 records. The analysis revealed a lack of universally accepted definitions for building design strategies and their rare application to livestock facilities, where passive solutions and insulation prevailed. The application of renewable energy was rare and limited to rural buildings, as was the application of sustainable building materials to livestock, agriculture, and vernacular buildings. Conversely, increased attention was paid to the definition and classification of vernacular architecture features aimed at enhancing existing buildings and mitigating or facilitating the landscape integration of those that diverge most from them. Although not exhaustive, this review identified some knowledge gaps. More efforts are needed to reduce environmental impacts and meet the milestones set by international agreements. The performance of the turbocharger nozzle ring is a key factor in the overall operation of the main engine of the ship. Minimizing failure and damage caused by high exhaust gas temperature and pressure is essential. As a first step toward improving turbocharger safety, this study performed 3D scanning of an aged nozzle ring to obtain its precise geometry and developed a corresponding numerical model. The boundary conditions of the numerical model were defined by the exhaust gas temperature and pressure at various engine output loads. Structural safety was assessed using static structural and stress-life fatigue analyses. A sharp increase in maximum equivalent stress and strain was observed at output loads of 85% and higher. At 25% load, the maximum fatigue life indicated 1.76 × 108 cycles, while at 100% load, the maximum damage index reached 1. A field performance test conducted at 85% of the main engine’s output load revealed severe damage under high-load conditions. Specifically, damage occurred at the contact area between the outer hoop and the tip of the blade’s trailing edge. This observed damage pattern closely aligned with the results predicted by the fatigue life analysis. The validity of the present study was confirmed through a comparative analysis of the fatigue life predictions and the field test results. Full article

Hydrogen offers a promising solution to reduce emissions in the energy sector with the growing need for decarbonisation. Despite its environmental benefits, the use of hydrogen presents significant challenges in storage and transport. Many studies have focused on the different types of hydrogen production and analysed the pros and cons of each technique for different applications. This study focuses on techno-economic analysis of onsite hydrogen production through ammonia decomposition by utilising the heat from exhaust gas generated by hydrogen-fuelled gas turbines. Aspen Plus simulation software and its economic evaluation system are used. The Siemens Energy SGT-400 gas turbine’s parameters are used as the baseline for the hydrogen gas turbine in this study, together with the economic parameters of the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) are considered. The levelised cost of hydrogen (LCOH) is found to be 5.64 USD/kg of hydrogen, which is 10.6% lower than that of the conventional method, where a furnace is used to increase the temperature of ammonia. A major contribution of the LCOH comes from the ammonia feed cost up to 99%. The price of ammonia is found to be the most sensitive parameter of the contribution to LCOH. The findings of this study show that the use of ammonia decomposition via heat recovery for onsite hydrogen production with ammonic recycling is economically viable and highlight the critical need to further reduce the prices of green ammonia and blue ammonia in the future. Most modified asphalts require high-temperature shearing and prolonged mixing to achieve a uniform structure, often resulting in substantial exhaust gas pollution. This study explores the utilization of polyurethane (PU) as a warm mix asphalt modifier, leveraging its favorable compatibility with asphalt at lower temperatures to mitigate emissions. To address the inherent limitations of PU-modified asphalt mixtures, namely, poor low-temperature performance and susceptibility to water damage, silane coupling agents (SCAs) are introduced to reinforce the asphalt–aggregate interfacial strength. At the microscopic level, the optimal PU content (20.8%) was determined through analysis of micro-viscosity and radial distribution functions (RDFs). SCA effects on interfacial properties were assessed using adhesion work, adhesion depth, and interfacial thermal stability. At the macroscopic level, performance metrics—including strength, high-temperature resistance, low-temperature resistance, and water stability—were evaluated against a benchmark hot mix SBS-modified asphalt mixture. The results indicate that PU-modified asphalts exhibit superior high-temperature performance and strength but slightly lower low-temperature performance and insufficient water stability. The addition of SCAs improved both low-temperature and water stability attributes, enabling the mixtures to meet specification requirements. The simulation results suggest that KH-550, which chemically reacts with isocyanate groups (-OCN) in PU, exhibits a better interfacial reinforcement effect than KH-570. Therefore, KH-550 is recommended as the preferred SCA for PU-modified asphalt mixtures in practical applications. Full article
