Amidst the background of accelerated global energy transition, the safety risk of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems, especially the fire hazard, has become a key bottleneck hindering their large-scale application, and there is an urgent need to build a systematic prevention and control program. This paper focuses on the fire characteristics and thermal runaway mechanism of lithium-ion battery energy storage power stations, analyzing the current situation of their risk prevention and control technology across the dimensions of monitoring and early warning technology, thermal management technology, and fire protection technology, and comparing and analyzing the characteristics of each technology from multiple angles. Building on this analysis, this paper summarizes the limitations of the existing technologies and puts forward prospective development paths, including the development of multi-parameter coupled monitoring and warning technology, integrated and intelligent thermal management technology, clean and efficient extinguishing agents, and dynamic fire suppression strategies, aiming to provide solid theoretical support and technical guidance for the precise risk prevention and control of lithium-ion battery storage power stations. Mitigation Technique Using a Hybrid Energy Storage and Time-of-Use (TOU) Approach in Photovoltaic Grid Connection

This study investigates the impact of Time-of-Use (TOU) scheduling and battery energy storage systems (BESS) on voltage stability in a typical Malaysian medium-voltage distribution network with high photovoltaic (PV) system penetration. The analyzed network comprises 110 nodes connected via eight feeders to a pair of 132/11 kV, 15 MVA transformers, supplying a total load of 20.006 MVA. Each node is integrated with a 100 kW PV system, enabling up to 100% PV penetration scenarios. A hybrid mitigation strategy combining TOU-based load shifting and BESS was implemented to address voltage violations occurring, particularly during low-load night hours. Dynamic simulations using DIgSILENT PowerFactory were conducted under worst-case (no load and peak load) conditions. The novelty of this research is the use of real rural network data to validate a hybrid BESS–TOU strategy, supported by detailed sensitivity analysis across PV penetration levels. This provides practical voltage stabilization insights not shown in earlier studies. Results show that at 100% PV penetration, TOU or BESS alone are insufficient to fully mitigate voltage drops. However, a hybrid application of 0.4 MWh BESS with 20% TOU load shifting eliminates voltage violations across all nodes, raising the minimum voltage from 0.924 p.u. to 0.951 p.u. while reducing active power losses and grid dependency. A sensitivity analysis further reveals that a 60% PV penetration can be supported reliably using only 0.4 MWh of BESS and 10% TOU. Beyond this, hybrid mitigation becomes essential to maintain stability. The proposed solution demonstrates a scalable approach to enable large-scale PV integration in dense rural grids and addresses the specific operational characteristics of Malaysian networks, which differ from commonly studied IEEE test systems. This work fills a critical research gap by using real local data to propose and validate practical voltage mitigation strategies. Full article

This mini-review emphasizes the potential of biomass-derived materials as sustainable components for next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems. Biomass obtained from abundant and renewable natural resources can be transformed into carbonaceous materials. These materials typically possess hierarchical porosities, adjustable surface functionalities, and inherent heteroatom doping. These physical and chemical characteristics provide the structural and chemical flexibility needed for various electrochemical applications. Additionally, biomass-derived materials offer a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional components, promoting green chemistry and circular resource utilization. This review provides a systematic overview of synthesis methods, structural design strategies, and material engineering approaches for their use in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs), and supercapacitors (SCs). It also highlights key challenges in these systems, such as the severe volume expansion of anode materials in LIBs and the shuttle effect in LSBs and discusses how biomass-derived carbon can help address these issues. As the penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources continues to increase, ensuring reliable power system and frequency stability is of importance. Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) have emerged as an important solution to mitigate these challenges by providing essential grid support services. In this context, a state-of-charge (SOC)-frequency control strategy for grid-forming BESSs is proposed to enhance their role in stabilizing grid frequency and improving overall system performance. In the system, the DC-link capacitor is regulated to maintain the angular frequency through a matching control scheme, emulating the characteristics of the rotor dynamics of a synchronous generator (SG). Thereby, the active power control is implemented in the control of the DC/DC converter to further regulate the grid frequency. More specifically, the relationship between the active power and the frequency is established through the SOC of the battery. In addition, owing to the inevitable presence of differential operators in the control loop, a high-gain observer (HGO) is employed, and the corresponding parameter design of the proposed method is elaborated. The proposed strategy simultaneously achieves frequency regulation and implicit energy management by autonomously balancing power output with available battery capacity, demonstrating a novel dual benefit for sustainable grid operation. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, a 0.5-Hz frequency change and a 10% power change are carried out through simulations and also on a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform. The (1−x)Ba0.96Ca0.04TiO3−xBi(Li1/3Zr2/3)O3 (x = 0.03–0.15) ceramics were fabricated via the traditional solid reaction method. Characterization results revealed that each component exhibited a pure perovskite structure, and the average grain size significantly diminishes with increasing x. The (1−x)Ba0.96Ca0.04TiO3−xBi(Li1/3Zr2/3)O3 ceramics exhibited prominent relaxor ferroelectric behavior, whose characteristic narrow hysteresis loops effectively enhanced the energy storage performance of the material. Most importantly, the composition with x = 0.10 demonstrated exceptional energy storage properties at 150 kV/cm, achieving a high recoverable energy storage density (Wrec = 1.91 J/cm3) and excellent energy efficiency (η = 90.87%). Under the equivalent electric field, this composition also displayed a superior pulsed discharge performance, including a high current density (871 A/cm2), a high power density (67.3 MW/cm3), an ultrafast discharge time (t0.9 = 109 ns), and a discharged energy density of 1.47 J/cm3. These results demonstrate that the (1−x)Ba0.96Ca0.04TiO3−xBi(Li1/3Zr2/3)O3 ceramic system establishes a promising design paradigm for the creation and refinement of next-generation dielectrics for pulse power applications. The aim of the article is to determine the control range of a multiphase squirrel cage induction generator with more than three stator phases, operating in a wide range of driving speeds. The generator produces an output DC voltage using a multiphase converter operating as a PWM rectifier. The entire speed range is divided into intervals in which the sequence of stator phase voltages and, in effect, the number of pole pairs, is changed. In each interval, the output voltage is regulated by the frequency and amplitude of the stator voltages causing the highest possible power efficiency of the generator. The system can be scalar controlled or regulated using field orientation. Generator characteristics are calculated based on the set of steady-state equations derived from differential equations describing the multiphase induction machine. The calculation results are compared with simulations and with the steady-state measurement of the vector-controlled nine-phase generator. Recognizing the reliability of the obtained results, calculations are performed for a twelve-phase generator, obtaining satisfactory efficiency from 70% to 85% in the generator speed range from 0.2 to 1.0 of the assumed reference speed of 314 rad/s. The generator producing DC voltage can charge an electrical energy storage system or can be used directly to provide electrical power. This solution is not patented. Full article

Cement-based batteries (CBBs) are an emerging category of multifunctional materials that combine structural load-bearing capacity with integrated electrochemical energy storage, enabling the development of self-powered infrastructure. Although previous reviews have explored selected aspects of CBB technology, a comprehensive synthesis encompassing system architectures, material strategies, and performance metrics remains insufficient. In this review, CBB systems are categorized into two representative configurations: probe-type galvanic cells and layered monolithic structures. Their structural characteristics and electrochemical behaviors are critically compared. Strategies to enhance performance include improving ionic conductivity through alkaline pore solutions, facilitating electron transport using carbon-based conductive networks, and incorporating redox-active materials such as zinc–manganese dioxide and nickel–iron couples. Early CBB prototypes demonstrated limited energy densities due to high internal resistance and inefficient utilization of active components. Recent advancements in electrode architecture, including nickel-coated carbon fiber meshes and three-dimensional nickel foam scaffolds, have achieved stable rechargeability across multiple cycles with energy densities surpassing 11 Wh/m2. These findings demonstrate the practical potential of CBBs for both energy storage and additional functionalities, such as strain sensing enabled by conductive cement matrices. This review establishes a critical basis for future development of CBBs as multifunctional structural components in infrastructure applications. Full article

In response to increasingly stringent emission regulations, low-carbon fuels have received significant attention as sustainable energy sources for internal combustion engines. This study investigates four representative low-carbon fuels, methane, methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia, by systematically summarizing their combustion characteristics and emission profiles, along with a review of existing after-treatment technologies tailored to each fuel type. For methane engines, unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) produced during low-temperature combustion exhibits poor oxidation reactivity, necessitating integration of oxidation strategies such as diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), particulate oxidation catalyst (POC), ozone-assisted oxidation, and zoned catalyst coatings to improve purification efficiency. Methanol combustion under low-temperature conditions tends to produce formaldehyde and other UHCs. Due to the lack of dedicated after-treatment systems, pollutant control currently relies on general-purpose catalysts such as three-way catalyst (TWC), DOC, and POC. Although hydrogen combustion is carbon-free, its high combustion temperature often leads to elevated nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, requiring a combination of optimized hydrogen supply strategies and selective catalytic reduction (SCR)-based denitrification systems. Similarly, while ammonia offers carbon-free combustion and benefits from easier storage and transportation, its practical application is hindered by several challenges, including low ignitability, high toxicity, and notable NOx emissions compared to conventional fuels. Current exhaust treatment for ammonia-fueled engines primarily depends on SCR, selective catalytic reduction-coated diesel particulate filter (SDPF). Emerging NOx purification technologies, such as integrated NOx reduction via hydrogen or ammonia fuel utilization, still face challenges of stability and narrow effective temperatures. Full article

Background: To address the uncertainties of renewable energy power generation, the disorderly charging characteristics of electric vehicles, and the high electricity cost of the power grid in expressway service areas, a method of economic dispatch optimization based on the improved particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed in this study. Methods: Mathematical models of photovoltaic power generation, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles were established, thereby constructing the microgrid system model of the power load in the expressway service area. Taking the economic cost of electricity consumption in the service area as the objective function and simultaneously meeting constraints such as power balance, power grid interactions, and energy storage systems, a microgrid economy dispatch model is constructed. An improved particle swarm optimization algorithm with time-varying parameters of the inertia weight and learning factor was designed to solve the optimal dispatching strategy. The inertia weight was improved by adopting the Gaussian decreasing method, and the asymmetric dynamic learning factor was adjusted simultaneously. Findings: Field case studies demonstrate that, compared to other algorithms, the improved Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm effectively reduces the operational costs of microgrid systems while exhibiting accelerated convergence speed and enhanced robustness. Value: This study provides a theoretical mathematical reference for the economic dispatch optimization of microgrids in renewable-integrated transportation systems. Full article

Hydrogen is a potential key component of a carbon-neutral energy carrier and an input to marine industrial processes. This study examines the consequences of coupled hydrogen release and marine environmental factors during floating photovoltaic hydrogen production (FPHP) system failures. A validated three-dimensional numerical model of FPHP comprehensively characterizes hydrogen leakage dynamics under varied rupture diameters (25, 50, 100 mm), transient release duration, dispersion patterns, and wind intensity effects (0–20 m/s sea-level velocities) on hydrogen–air vapor clouds. FLACS-generated data establish the concentration–dispersion distance relationship, with numerical validation confirming predictive accuracy for hydrogen storage tank failures. The results indicate that the wind velocity and rupture size significantly influence the explosion risk; 100 mm ruptures elevate the explosion risk, producing vapor clouds that are 40–65% larger than 25 mm and 50 mm cases. Meanwhile, increased wind velocities (>10 m/s) accelerate hydrogen dilution, reducing the high-concentration cloud volume by 70–84%. Hydrogen jet orientation governs the spatial overpressure distribution in unconfined spaces, leading to considerable shockwave consequence variability. Photovoltaic modules and inverters of FPHP demonstrate maximum vulnerability to overpressure effects; these key findings can be used in the design of offshore platform safety. This study reveals fundamental accident characteristics for FPHP reliability assessment and provides critical insights for safety reinforcement strategies in maritime hydrogen applications. The improvement of environmental conditions has become a priority for governments and legislators. New electrified mobility systems are increasingly present in our environment, as they enable the reduction of polluting emissions. Electric vehicles (EVs) are one of the fastest-growing alternatives to date, with exponential growth expected over the next few years. In this article, the various charging modes for EVs are explored, and the risks associated with charging technologies are analysed, particularly for charging systems in high-power DC with Lithium battery energy storage, given their long market deployment and characteristic behaviour. In particular, the Arc Flash (AF) risk present in high-power DC chargers will be studied, involving numerous simulations of the charging process. Subsequently, the Incident Energy (IE) analysis is carried out at different specific points of a commercial high-power ‘Mode 4’ charger. For this purpose, different analysis methods of recognised prestige, such as Doan, Paukert, or Stokes and Oppenlander, are applied, using the latest version of the ETAP® simulation tool version 22.5.0. This study focuses on quantifying the potential severity (consequences) of an AF event, assuming its occurrence, rather than performing a probabilistic risk assessment according to standard methodologies. The primary objective of this research is to comprehensively quantify the potential consequences for workers involved in the operation, maintenance, repair, and execution of tasks related to EV charging systems. This analysis makes it possible to provide safe working conditions and to choose the appropriate and necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for each type of operation. It is essential to develop this novel process to quantify the consequences of AF and to protect the end users of EV charging systems. Full article

Biobutanol is becoming more relevant as a promising alternative biofuel, primarily due to its advantageous characteristics. These include a higher energy content and density compared to traditional biofuels, as well as its ability to mix effectively with gasoline, further enhancing its viability as a potential replacement. A viable strategy for attaining carbon neutrality, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and utilizing sustainable and renewable resources is the use of biomass to produce biobutanol. Lignocellulosic materials have gained widespread recognition as highly suitable feedstocks for the synthesis of butanol, together with various value-added byproducts. The successful generation of biobutanol hinges on three crucial factors: effective feedstock pretreatment, the choice of fermentation techniques, and the subsequent enhancement of the produced butanol. While biobutanol holds promise as an alternative biofuel, it is important to acknowledge certain drawbacks associated with its production and utilization. One significant limitation is the relatively high cost of production compared to other biofuels; additionally, the current reliance on lignocellulosic feedstocks necessitates significant advancements in pretreatment and bioconversion technologies to enhance overall process efficiency. Furthermore, the limited availability of biobutanol-compatible infrastructure, such as distribution and storage systems, poses a barrier to its widespread adoption. Addressing these drawbacks is crucial for maximizing the potential benefits of biobutanol as a sustainable fuel source. This document presents an extensive review encompassing the historical development of biobutanol production and explores emerging trends in the field. Full article

A scalable synthesis of two-dimensional titanium nitride chloride (TiNCl) via flash Joule heating (FJH) using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) precursor has been developed. This single-step method overcomes traditional synthesis challenges, including high energy consumption, multi-step procedures, and hazardous reagent requirements. The structural and chemical properties of the synthesized TiNCl were characterized through multiple analytical techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the presence of TiNCl phase, while Raman spectroscopy data showed no detectable oxide impurities. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis revealed characteristic Ti–N stretching vibrations, further confirming successful titanium nitride synthesis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging revealed thin, plate-like nanostructures with high electron transparency. These analyses confirmed the formation of highly crystalline TiNCl flakes with nanoscale dimensions and minimal structural defects. The material exhibits excellent structural integrity and phase purity, demonstrating potential for applications in photocatalysis, electronics, and energy storage. This work establishes FJH as a sustainable and scalable approach for producing MXenes with controlled properties, facilitating their integration into emerging technologies. Unlike conventional methods, FJH enables rapid, energy-efficient synthesis while maintaining material quality, providing a viable route for industrial-scale production of two-dimensional materials. Marine–continental transitional shale is a promising unconventional gas reservoir, playing an increasingly important role in China’s energy portfolio. However, compared to marine shale, research on marine–continental transitional shale’s fractal characteristics of pore structure and complete pore size distribution remains limited. In this work, high-pressure mercury intrusion, N2 adsorption, and CO2 adsorption techniques, combined with fractal geometry modeling, were employed to characterize the pore structure of the Shanxi Formation marine–continental transitional shale. The shale exhibits generally high TOC content and abundant clay minerals, indicating strong hydrocarbon-generation potential. The pore size distribution is multi-modal: micropores and mesopores dominate, contributing the majority of the specific surface area and pore volume, whereas macropores display a single-peak distribution. Fractal analysis reveals that micropores have high fractal dimensions and structural regularity, mesopores exhibit dual-fractal characteristics, and macropores show large variations in fractal dimension. Characteristics of pore structure is primarily controlled by TOC content and mineral composition. These findings provide a quantitative basis for evaluating shale reservoir quality, understanding gas storage mechanisms, and optimizing strategies for sustainable of oil and gas development in marine–continental transitional shales. The varying characteristics of grid-connected energy resources necessitate a clear and effective approach for managing and scheduling generation units. Without proper control, high levels of renewable integration can pose challenges to optimal dispatch, especially as more generation sources, like wind and solar PV, are introduced. As a result, conventional power sources require an advanced management system, for instance, a virtual power plant (VPP), capable of accurately monitoring power supply and demand. This study thoroughly explores the dispatch of battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and diesel generators (DGs) through a distributionally robust joint chance-constrained optimization (DR-JCCO) framework utilizing the conditional value at risk (CVaR) and heuristic-X (H-X) algorithm, structured as a bilevel optimization problem. Furthermore, Binomial expansion (BE) is employed to linearize the model, enabling the assessment of BESS dispatch through a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPECs). The findings confirm the effectiveness of the DRO-CVaR and H-X methods in dispatching grid network resources and BE under the MPEC framework. Full article
