Under the construction background of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, high-energy-consuming enterprises, represented by the electrolytic aluminum industry, have become important carriers for energy conservation and emission reduction. These enterprises are characterized by significant energy consumption and high carbon emissions, greatly impacting the economic and environmental benefits of regional power grids. Existing research often focuses on grid revenue, leaving high-energy-consuming enterprises in a passive regulatory position. To address this, this paper constructs an economic dispatch strategy for power grids that considers waste heat utilization in high-energy-consuming enterprises. A typical representative, electrolytic aluminum load and its waste heat utilization model, for the entire production process of high-energy-consuming loads, is established. Using a tiered carbon trading calculation formula, a low-carbon production scheme for high-energy-consuming enterprises is developed. On the grid side, considering local load levels, the uncertainty of wind power output, and the energy demands of aluminum production, a robust day-ahead economic dispatch model is established. Case analysis based on the modified IEEE-30 node system demonstrates that the proposed method balances economic efficiency and low-carbon performance while reducing the conservatism of traditional optimization approaches. Electricity is a significant factor in the life cycle of many products, so the reliability of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data is crucial. The article presents publicly available sources of emission factors representative of Poland. The aim of the study is to assess their strengths and weaknesses in the context of the calculation requirements of carbon footprint analysis in accordance with the GHG Protocol. The article presents the results of carbon footprint calculations for different ranges of emissions in the life cycle of 1 kWh of electricity delivered to a hypothetical organization. Next, a discussion on the quality of the emissions factors has been provided, taking account of data quality indicators. It was concluded that two of the emissions factors that are compared—those based on the national consumption mix and the residual mix for Poland—have been recognized as suitable for use in carbon footprint calculations. Beyond the calculation results, the research highlights the significance of the impact of the selection of emissions factors on the reliability of environmental analysis. The article identifies methodological challenges, including the risk of double counting, limited transparency, methodological inconsistency, and low correlation of data with specific locations and technologies. The insights presented contribute to improving the robustness of carbon footprint calculations. Full article

In the context of achieving low-carbon goals, building low-carbon energy systems is a crucial development direction and implementation pathway. Renewable energy is favored because of its clean characteristics, but the access may have an impact on the power grid. Microgrid technology provides an effective solution to this problem. Uncertainty exists in single microgrids, so multiple microgrids are introduced to improve system stability and robustness. Electric carbon trading and profit redistribution among multiple microgrids have been challenges. To promote energy commensurability among microgrids, expand the types of energy interactions, and improve the utilization rate of renewable energy, this paper proposes a cooperative operation optimization model of multi-microgrids based on the green certificate and carbon trading mechanism to promote local energy consumption and a low carbon economy. First, this paper introduces a carbon capture system (CCS) and power-to-gas (P2G) device in the microgrid and constructs a cogeneration operation model coupled with a power-to-gas carbon capture system. On this basis, a low-carbon operation model for multi-energy microgrids is proposed by combining the local carbon trading market, the stepped carbon trading mechanism, and the green certificate trading mechanism. Secondly, this paper establishes a cooperative game model for multiple microgrid electricity carbon trading based on the Nash negotiation theory after constructing the single microgrid model. Finally, the ADMM method and the asymmetric energy mapping contribution function are used for the solution. The case study uses a typical 24 h period as an example for the calculation. Case study analysis shows that, compared with the independent operation mode of microgrids, the total benefits of the entire system increased by 38,296.1 yuan and carbon emissions were reduced by 30,535 kg through the coordinated operation of electricity–carbon coupling. The arithmetic example verifies that the method proposed in this paper can effectively improve the economic benefits of each microgrid and reduce carbon emissions. Full article

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a major toxic gas emitted from vehicle exhaust, industrial processes, and incomplete fuel combustion, posing serious environmental and health risks. Catalytic oxidation of CO into less harmful CO2 is an effective strategy to reduce these emissions. In this study, we investigated the catalytic performance of platinum (Pt) single atoms doped on C3N monolayers with various vacancy defects, including single carbon (CV) and nitrogen (NV) vacancies, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that Pt@NV-C3N exhibited the most favorable catalytic properties, with the highest O2 adsorption energy (−3.07 eV). This performance significantly outperforms Pt atoms doped at other vacancies. It can be attributed to the strong binding between Pt and nitrogen vacancies, which contributes to its excellent resistance to Pt aggregation. CO oxidation on Pt@NV-C3N proceeds via the Eley–Rideal (ER2) mechanism with a low activation barrier of 0.41 eV for the rate-determining step, indicating high catalytic efficiency at low temperatures. These findings suggest that Pt@NV-C3N is a promising candidate for CO oxidation, contributing to developing cost-effective and environmentally sustainable catalysts. The strong binding of Pt atoms to the nitrogen vacancies prevents aggregation, ensuring the stability and durability of the catalyst. The kinetic modeling further revealed that the ER2 mechanism offers the highest reaction rate constants over a wide temperature range (273–700 K). The low activation energy barrier also facilitates CO oxidation at lower temperatures, addressing critical challenges in automotive and industrial pollution control. This study provides valuable theoretical insights for designing advanced single-atom catalysts for environmental remediation applications. Full article

This research develops a dual physics-based machine learning system to forecast fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for a 100 m oil tanker across six operational scenarios: Original, Paint, Advanced Propeller, Fin, Bulbous Bow, and Combined. The combination of hydrodynamic calculations with Monte Carlo simulations provides a solid foundation for training machine learning models, particularly in cases where dataset restrictions are present. The XGBoost model demonstrated superior performance compared to Support Vector Regression, Gaussian Process Regression, Random Forest, and Shallow Neural Network models, achieving near-zero prediction errors that closely matched physics-based calculations. The physics-based analysis demonstrated that the Combined scenario, which combines hull coatings with bulbous bow modifications, produced the largest fuel consumption reduction (5.37% at 15 knots), followed by the Advanced Propeller scenario. The results demonstrate that user inputs (e.g., engine power: 870 kW, speed: 12.7 knots) match the Advanced Propeller scenario, followed by Paint, which indicates that advanced propellers or hull coatings would optimize efficiency. The obtained insights help ship operators modify their operational parameters and designers select essential modifications for sustainable operations. The model maintains its strength at low speeds, where fuel consumption is minimal, making it applicable to other oil tankers. The hybrid approach provides a new tool for maritime efficiency analysis, yielding interpretable results that support International Maritime Organization objectives, despite starting with a limited dataset. The model requires additional research to enhance its predictive accuracy using larger datasets and real-time data collection, which will aid in achieving global environmental stewardship. Land urbanization enables a thorough perspective to explore the decoupling of land use environmental efficiency (LUEE) and energy use, thereby supporting the shift into low-carbon land use by emphasizing energy conservation and reducing carbon emissions. This paper first calculates LUEE from 2011 to 2021 by using the EBM-DEA model in China. The geographical detector model is used to examine the driving factors of land use environmental efficiency. The results show the following: (1) China’s LUEE is high in general but shows a clear pattern of spatial differentiation internally, with the highest values in the eastern region represented by Beijing, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, while the central and western regions show lower LUEE because of their irrational industrial structure and lagging green development. (2) Energy consumption, economic development, industrial upgrading, population size, and urban expansion are the driving factors. Their explanatory power for the spatial stratification heterogeneity of land use environmental impacts varies. (3) Urban expansion has the greatest impact on the spatial differentiation of land use environmental effects, while energy consumption also shows significant explanatory strength. In contrast, economic development and population size exhibit relatively weaker explanatory effects. (4) The interaction of the two driving factors has a greater impact on LUEE than their individual effects, and the interaction is a two-factor enhancement. Finally, we make targeted recommendations to help improve land use environmental efficiency. Full article

What Determines Carbon Emissions of Multimodal Travel? Insights from Interpretable Machine Learning on Mobility Trajectory Data

Understanding the carbon emissions of multimodal travel—comprising walking, metro, bus, cycling, and ride-hailing—is essential for promoting sustainable urban mobility. However, most existing studies focus on single-mode travel, while underlying spatiotemporal and behavioral determinants remain insufficiently explored due to the lack of fine-grained data and interpretable analytical frameworks. This study proposes a novel integration of high-frequency, real-world mobility trajectory data with interpretable machine learning to systematically identify the key drivers of carbon emissions at the individual trip level. Firstly, multimodal travel chains are reconstructed using continuous GPS trajectory data collected in Beijing. Secondly, a model based on Calculate Emissions from Road Transport (COPERT) is developed to quantify trip-level CO2 emissions. Thirdly, four interpretable machine learning models based on gradient boosting—XGBoost, GBDT, LightGBM, and CatBoost—are trained using transportation and built environment features to model the relationship between CO2 emissions and a set of explanatory variables; finally, Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and partial dependence plots (PDPs) are used to interpret the model outputs, revealing key determinants and their non-linear interaction effects. The results show that transportation-related features account for 75.1% of the explained variance in emissions, with bus usage being the most influential single factor (contributing 22.6%). Built environment features explain the remaining 24.9%. The PDP analysis reveals that substantial emission reductions occur only when the shares of bus, metro, and cycling surpass threshold levels of approximately 40%, 40%, and 30%, respectively. Additionally, travel carbon emissions are minimized when trip origins and destinations are located within a 10 to 11 km radius of the central business district (CBD). This study advances the field by establishing a scalable, interpretable, and behaviorally grounded framework to assess carbon emissions from multimodal travel, providing actionable insights for low-carbon transport planning and policy design. The article is focused on the quantitative assessment of the thermal impact of polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs) on the mesopause caused by the emission of absorbed solar and terrestrial infrared (IR) radiation by cloud particles. For this purpose, a parameterization of mesopause heating by PMC crystals has been developed, the main feature of which is to incorporate the thermal properties of ice and the interaction of cloud particles with the environment. Parametrization is based on PMCs zero-dimensional (0-D) model and uses temperature, pressure, and water vapor data in the 80–90 km altitude range retrieved from Solar Occultation for Ice Experiment (SOFIE) measurements. The calculations are made for 14 PMC seasons in both hemispheres with the summer solstice as the central date. The obtained results show that PMCs can make a significant contribution to the heat balance of the upper atmosphere, comparable to the heating caused, for example, by the dissipation of atmospheric gravity waves (GWs). The interhemispheric differences in heating are manifested mainly in the altitude structure: in the Southern Hemisphere (SH), the area of maximum heating values is 1–2 km higher than in the Northern Hemisphere (NH), while quantitatively they are of the same order. The most intensive heating is observed at the lower boundary of the minimum temperature layer (below 150 K) and gradually weakens with altitude. The NH heating median value is 5.86 K/day, while in the SH it is 5.24 K/day. The lowest values of heating are located above the maximum of cloud ice concentration in both hemispheres. The calculated heating rates are also examined in the context of the various factors of temperature variation in the observed atmospheric layers. It is shown in particular that the thermal impact of PMC is commensurate with the influence of dissipating gravity waves at heights of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT), which parameterizations are included in all modern numerical models of atmospheric circulation. Hence, the developed parameterization can be used in global atmospheric circulation models for further study of the peculiarities of the thermodynamic regime of the MLT. Full article

This article examines the role of managed ecosystems, and particularly forests, in achieving carbon neutrality in Russia. The range of estimates of Russia’s forests’ net carbon balance in different studies varies by up to 7 times. The. A comparison of Russia’s National GHG inventory data for 2023 and 2024 (with the latter showing 37% higher forest sequestration) is presented and explained. The possible changes in the Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy of Russia (LT LEDS) carbon neutrality scenario due to new land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) data in National GHG Inventory Document (NID) 2024 are discussed. It is demonstrated that the refined net carbon balance should not impact the mitigation ambition in the Russian forestry sector. An assessment of changes in the drafts of the Operational plan of the LT LEDS is presented and it is concluded that its structure and content have significantly improved; however, a delay in operationalization nullifies efforts. The article highlights the problem of GHG emissions increases in forest fires and compares the gap between official “ground-based” and Remote Sensing approaches in calculations of such emissions. Considering the intention to increase net absorption by implementing forest carbon projects, the latest changes in the regulations of such projects are discussed. The limitations of reforestation carbon projects in Russia are provided. Proposals are presented for the development of the national forest policy towards increasing the net forest carbon absorption, including considering the projected decrease in annual net absorption by Russian forests by 2050. The role of government and private investment in improving the forest management of structural measures to adapt forestry to modern climate change and the place of forest climate projects need to be clearly defined in the LT LEDS. Urban areas are responsible for most of Europe’s energy demand and emissions and urgently require building retrofits to meet climate neutrality goals. This study evaluates the energy efficiency potential of three public school buildings in western Macedonia, Greece—a cold-climate region with high heating needs. The buildings, constructed between 1986 and 2003, exhibited poor insulation, outdated electromechanical systems, and inefficient lighting, resulting in high oil consumption and low energy ratings. A robust methodology is applied, combining detailed on-site energy audits, thermophysical diagnostics based on U-value calculations, and a techno-economic assessment utilizing Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and SWOT analysis. The study evaluates a series of retrofit measures, including ceiling insulation, high-efficiency lighting replacements, and boiler modernization, against both technical performance criteria and financial viability. Results indicate that ceiling insulation and lighting system upgrades yield positive economic returns, while wall and floor insulation measures remain financially unattractive without external subsidies. The findings are further validated through sensitivity analysis and policy scenario modeling, revealing how targeted investments, especially when supported by public funding schemes, can maximize energy savings and emissions reductions. The study concludes that selective implementation of cost-effective measures, supported by public grants, can achieve energy targets, improve indoor environments, and serve as a replicable model of targeted retrofits across the region, though reliance on external funding and high upfront costs pose challenges. The objective of this analysis was to compare the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from contemporary grazing cattle production with bison grazing, both modern and historical. The data sets used in this analysis were derived from existing research and conservation properties located outside of Manhattan, KS (USA), which are home to stocker cattle, cow–calf production (CCS), and grazing bison. For stocker cattle, 10 years of animal production data (2007–2016) from season-long stocking (SLS, grazing 156 d) and intensive early stocking systems (IES; 76 grazing d and 2× stocking density) were used for GHG calculations. Enteric CH4, manure CH4, and direct nitrous oxide emissions were estimated using the IPCC tier 2 methodology. Historic bison (HGB) enteric CH4 estimates were calculated using a stocking density of 0.15 ha/animal and assuming that only 13% of grassland was used by bison each year. Within contemporary systems, IES had the lowest emissions (463.3 kg CO2-eq./ha/yr), while SLS, CCS, and MGB had the highest estimates (494.7, 493.9, and 595.9 kg CO2-eq./ha/yr, respectively). HGB had the lowest estimated annual emissions at 295.7 kg CO2-eq./ha/yr. These results imply that the historic grazing baseline of this grassland system is lower but similar to that of contemporary grazing cattle in the Great Plains region. Full article

Against the backdrop of the “dual carbon” goals, how to enhance the carbon emission efficiency of airlines has become an urgent issue to be addressed for both industry development and low-carbon targets. This paper constructs an evaluation system for the carbon emission efficiency of airlines and uses the SBM-DDF model under the global production possibility set, combined with the bootstrap-DEA method, to calculate the efficiency values. On this basis, the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method is employed to analyze the synergistic effects of multiple influencing factors in three dimensions: economic benefits, transportation benefits, and energy consumption on improving carbon emission efficiency. The research findings reveal that, first, a single influencing factor does not constitute a necessary condition for achieving high carbon emission efficiency; second, there are four combinations that enhance carbon emission efficiency: “load volume-driven type”, “scale revenue-driven type”, “high ticket price + technology-driven type”, and “passenger and cargo synergy mixed type”. These discoveries are of great significance for promoting the construction of a carbon emission efficiency system by Chinese airlines and achieving high-quality development in the aviation industry. Chinese public building carbon emissions trading system (CETS) pilots have employed different carbon quota methods over more than ten years. However, there are few quantitative comparisons on CETS emission reduction effects in different pilots based on the carbon quota analysis. This paper first calculates the annual carbon quotas of public buildings based on carbon quota allocation methodologies from municipal policy documents. Then, the factors affecting the carbon quotas of public buildings are analyzed. Finally, the emission reduction effects are analyzed and compared between the pilots. The findings are concluded as follows: (1) Public building stock area and energy efficiency demonstrate significant effects on the carbon quota. (2) The average annual carbon quota deficits of public buildings were 929,800 tons in Beijing and 596,000 tons in Shanghai, while the carbon quota was an annual surplus of 296,400 tons in Shenzhen, indicating that carbon quota allocations in Beijing and Shanghai pilots are more conducive to promoting the active participation of high-emission enterprises. (3) The emission reduction effect in Beijing is most pronounced, followed by Shanghai and finally Shenzhen. Accordingly, the reasons for the difference in emission reduction effects are analyzed. Creating a comfortable microclimate in the premises of buildings is currently becoming one of the priorities in the field of architecture, construction and engineering systems. The increased attention from the scientific community to this topic is due not only to the desire to ensure healthy and favorable conditions for human life but also to the need for the rational use of energy resources. This area is becoming particularly relevant in the context of global challenges related to climate change, rising energy costs and increased environmental requirements. Practice shows that any technical solutions to ensure comfortable temperature, humidity and air exchange in rooms should be closely linked to the concept of energy efficiency. This allows one not only to reduce operating costs but also to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to sustainable development and environmental safety. In this connection, this study presents a parametric assessment of the influence of climatic and geometric factors on the aerodynamic characteristics of the air cavity, which affect the heat exchange process in the ventilated layer of curtain wall systems. The assessment was carried out using a combined analytical calculation method that provides averaged thermophysical parameters, such as mean air velocity (Vs), average internal surface temperature (tin.sav), and convective heat transfer coefficient (αs) within the air cavity. This study resulted in empirical average values, demonstrating that the air velocity within the cavity significantly depends on atmospheric pressure and façade height difference. For instance, a 10-fold increase in façade height leads to a 4.4-fold increase in air velocity. Furthermore, a three-fold variation in local resistance coefficients results in up to a two-fold change in airflow velocity. The cavity thickness, depending on atmospheric pressure, was also found to affect airflow velocity by up to 25%. Similar patterns were observed under ambient temperatures of +20 °C, +30 °C, and +40 °C. The analysis confirmed that airflow velocity is directly affected by cavity height, while the impact of solar radiation is negligible. However, based on the outcomes of the analytical model, it was concluded that the method does not adequately account for the effects of solar radiation and vertical temperature gradients on airflow within ventilated façades. This highlights the need for further full-scale experimental investigations under hot climate conditions in South Kazakhstan. The findings are expected to be applicable internationally to regions with comparable climatic characteristics. Ultimately, a correct understanding of thermophysical processes in such structures will support the advancement of trends such as Lightweight Design, Functionally Graded Design, and Value Engineering in the development of curtain wall systems, through the optimized selection of façade configurations, accounting for temperature loads under specific climatic and design conditions. In this work, a comprehensive theoretical investigation is carried out to explore the electronic and spectroscopic properties of selected diatomic molecular ions MgRb+ and SrRb+. Using high-level ab initio calculations based on a pseudopotential approach, along with large Gaussian basis sets and full valence configuration interaction (FCI), we accurately determine adiabatic potential energy curves, spectroscopic constants, transition dipole moments (TDMs), and permanent electric dipole moments (PDMs). To deepen our understanding of these systems, we calculate radiative lifetimes for vibrational levels in both ground and low-lying excited electronic states. This includes evaluating spontaneous and stimulated emission rates, as well as the effects of blackbody radiation. We also compute Franck–Condon factors and analyze photoassociation processes for both ions. Furthermore, to explore low-energy collisional dynamics, we investigate elastic scattering in the first excited states (21Σ+) describing the collision between the Ra atom and Mg+ or Sr+ ions. Our findings provide detailed insights into the theoretical electronic structure of these molecular ions, paving the way for future experimental studies in the field of cold and ultracold molecular ion physics.
