Understanding alpine plants’ survival and reproduction is crucial for their conservation in climate change. Based on 423 valid distribution points, this study utilizes the MaxEnt model to predict the potential habitat and distribution dynamics of Leontopodium nanum under both current and future climate scenarios, while clarifying the key factors that influence its distribution. The primary ecological drivers of distribution are altitude (2886.08 m–5576.14 m) and the mean temperature of the driest quarter (−6.60–1.55 °C). Currently, the suitable habitat area is approximately 520.28 × 104 km2, covering about 3.5% of the global land area, concentrated mainly in the Tibetan Plateau, with smaller regions across East and South Asia. Under future climate scenarios, low-emission (SSP126), suitable areas are projected to expand during the 2050s and 2070s. High-emission (SSP585), suitable areas may decrease by 50%, with a 66.07% reduction in highly suitable areas by the 2070s. The greatest losses are expected in the south-eastern Tibetan Plateau. Regarding dynamic habitat changes, by the 2050s, newly suitable areas will account for 51.09% of the current habitat, while 68.26% of existing habitat will become unsuitable. By the 2070s, newly suitable areas will rise to 71.86% of the current total, but the loss of existing areas will exceed these gains, particularly under the high-emission scenario. The centroid of suitable habitats is expected to shift northward, with migration distances ranging from 23.94 km to 342.42 km. The most significant shift is anticipated under the SSP126 scenario by the 2070s. This study offers valuable insights into the distribution dynamics of L. nanum and other alpine species under the context of climate change. From a conservation perspective, it is recommended to prioritize the protection and restoration of vegetation in key habitat patches or potential migration corridors, restrict overgrazing and infrastructure development, and maintain genetic diversity and dispersal capacity through assisted migration and population genetic monitoring when necessary. These measures aim to provide a robust scientific foundation for the comprehensive conservation and sustainable management of the grassland ecosystem on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Full article

This research develops a dual physics-based machine learning system to forecast fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for a 100 m oil tanker across six operational scenarios: Original, Paint, Advanced Propeller, Fin, Bulbous Bow, and Combined. The combination of hydrodynamic calculations with Monte Carlo simulations provides a solid foundation for training machine learning models, particularly in cases where dataset restrictions are present. The XGBoost model demonstrated superior performance compared to Support Vector Regression, Gaussian Process Regression, Random Forest, and Shallow Neural Network models, achieving near-zero prediction errors that closely matched physics-based calculations. The physics-based analysis demonstrated that the Combined scenario, which combines hull coatings with bulbous bow modifications, produced the largest fuel consumption reduction (5.37% at 15 knots), followed by the Advanced Propeller scenario. The results demonstrate that user inputs (e.g., engine power: 870 kW, speed: 12.7 knots) match the Advanced Propeller scenario, followed by Paint, which indicates that advanced propellers or hull coatings would optimize efficiency. The obtained insights help ship operators modify their operational parameters and designers select essential modifications for sustainable operations. The model maintains its strength at low speeds, where fuel consumption is minimal, making it applicable to other oil tankers. The hybrid approach provides a new tool for maritime efficiency analysis, yielding interpretable results that support International Maritime Organization objectives, despite starting with a limited dataset. The model requires additional research to enhance its predictive accuracy using larger datasets and real-time data collection, which will aid in achieving global environmental stewardship. Vehicle emissions, as a source of air pollution and greenhouse gases, have a significant impact on the environment and climate change. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have the potential to reduce air pollution and GHGs. However, BEVs often attract the criticism that their benefits are minimal as the power plant emissions compensate for emissions from the tailpipes of vehicles. This study compared two scenarios: scenario A considers all vehicles as internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), and scenario B considers all vehicles as BEVs. The study used the City of San Antonio, Texas, as the study area. The study also focused on the seasonal and spatial variation in ICEV emissions. The results indicate that scenario A has a considerably higher volume of emissions than scenario B. For ICEVs, PM2.5 emissions were up to 50% higher in rural areas than urban areas, but 45% lower for unrestricted versus restricted conditions. CO2 emissions were highly affected by seasonal variations, with a 51% decrease from winter to summer. The full adoption of BEVs could reduce CO2 and N2O emissions by 99% and 58% per km, especially for natural gas power resources. Therefore, BEVs play a significant role in reducing emissions from the transportation sector. Full article

Electric buses are key in the strategy towards a greenhouse-gas-neutral fleet. However, their restrictions in terms of range and refueling as well as their increased price point present new challenges for public transport companies. This study aims to address, based on real-world operational data, how energy consumption and charging behavior affect battery aging and how operational strategies can be optimized to extend battery life under realistic conditions. This article presents an energy consumption analysis with respect to ambient temperatures and average vehicle speed based exclusively on real-world data of an urban bus fleet, providing a data foundation for range forecasting and infrastructure planning optimized for public transport needs. Additionally, the State of Charge (SOC) window during operation and vehicle idle time as well as the charging power were analyzed in this case study to formulate recommendations towards a more battery-friendly treatment. The central research question is whether battery-friendly operational strategies—such as reduced charging power and lower SOC windows—can realistically be implemented in daily public transport operations. The impact of the recommendations on battery lifetime is estimated using a battery aging model on drive cycles. Finally, the reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel buses is estimated. Use of Volatile Organic Compounds Produced by Bacillus Bacteria for the Biological Control of Fusarium oxysporum

Restricting the use of chemical pesticides in forestry requires the search for alternative solutions. These could be volatile organic compounds produced by three investigated species of bacteria (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (ex Fukumoto) Priest, B. subtilis (Ehrenberg) Cohn and B. thuringiensis Berliner), which inhibit the growth of the pathogen F. oxysporum Schltdl. emend. Snyder & Hansen in forest nurseries. The highest inhibition of fungal growth (70%) was observed with B. amyloliquefaciens after 24 h of antagonism test, which had a higher content of carbonyl compounds (46.83 ± 8.41%) than B. subtilis (41.50 ± 6.45%) or B. thuringiensis (34.62 ± 4.77%). Only in the volatile emissions of B. amyloliquefaciens were 3-hydroxybutan-2-one, undecan-2-one, dodecan-5-one and tetradecan-5-one found. In contrast, the main components of the volatile emissions of F. oxysporum were chlorinated derivatives of benzaldehyde (e.g., 3,5-dichloro-4-methoxybenzaldehyde) and chlorinated derivatives of benzene (e.g., 1,4-dichloro-2,5-dimethoxybenzene), as well as carbonyl compounds (e.g., benzaldehyde) and alcohols (e.g., benzyl alcohol). Further compounds were found in the interactions between B. amyloliquefaciens and F. oxysporum (e.g., α-cubebene, linalool, undecan-2-ol, decan-2-one and 2,6-dichloroanisole). Specific substances were found for B. amyloliquefaciens (limonene, nonan-2-ol, phenethyl alcohol, heptan-2-one and tridecan-2-one) and for F. oxysporum (propan-1-ol, propan-2-ol, heptan-2-one and tridecan-2-one). The amounts of volatile chemical compounds found in B. amyloliquefaciens or in the bacterium–fungus interaction can be used for further research to limit the pathogenic fungus. In the future, one should focus on the compounds that were found exclusively in interactions and whose content was higher than in isolated bacteria. In order to conquer an ecological niche, bacteria increase the production of secondary metabolites, including specific chemical compounds. The results presented are a prerequisite for creating an alternative solution or supplementing the currently used methods of plant protection against F. oxysporum. Understanding and applying the volatile organic compounds produced by bacteria can complement chemical plant protection against the pathogen, especially in greenhouses or tunnels where plants grow in conditions that favour fungal growth. Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensors based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) emitters have recently emerged as highly sensitive tools for biosensing. The AIE phenomenon, characterized by a significant luminescence change upon aggregation due to restricted intramolecular rotation or vibration, effectively enhances ECL intensity and efficiency, endowing AIECL emitters with high selectivity and stability. This review provides an overview of the developmental trajectory of AIECL, systematically elaborates and comparatively analyzes the mechanisms and luminophore systems of conventional ECL and AIECL, discusses the design strategies and construction methods of AIECL luminophores, and comprehensively summarizes the innovative applications of AIECL in the realm of biosensors. Finally, some of the current challenges in this emerging field are outlined, along with perspectives on future trends. Full article

Background and Objectives: Magnesium (Mg)-based materials, such as the WE43 alloy, show potential in biomedical applications owing to their advantageous mechanical properties and biodegradability; however, their quick corrosion rate and hydrogen release restrict their general clinical utilization. This study aimed to develop a novel Mg-Zn-Ca alloy system based on WE43 alloy, evaluating the influence of Zn and Ca additions on microstructure, mechanical properties, cytocompatibility, and electrochemical behavior for potential use in biodegradable orthopedic applications. Materials and Methods: The WE43-Zn-Ca alloy system was developed by alloying standard WE43 (Mg–Y–Zr–RE) with 1.5% Zn and Ca concentrations of 0.2% (WE43_0.2Ca alloy) and 0.3% (WE43_0.3Ca alloy). Microstructural analysis was performed utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in conjunction with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), while the chemical composition was validated through optical emission spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Mechanical properties were assessed through tribological tests. Electrochemical corrosion behavior was evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization in a 3.5% NaCl solution. Cytocompatibility was assessed in vitro on MG63 cells using cell viability assays (MTT). Results: Alloys WE43_0.2Ca and WE43_0.3Ca exhibited refined, homogeneous microstructures with grain sizes between 70 and 100 µm, without significant structural defects. Mechanical testing indicated reduced stiffness and an elastic modulus similar to human bone (19.2–20.3 GPa), lowering the risk of stress shielding. Cytocompatibility tests confirmed non-cytotoxic behavior for alloys WE43_0.2Ca and WE43_0.3Ca, with increased cell viability and unaffected cellular morphology. Conclusions: The study validates the potential of Mg-Zn-Ca alloys (especially WE43_0.3Ca) as biodegradable biomaterials for orthopedic implants due to their favorable combination of mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and cytocompatibility. The optimization of these alloys contributed to obtaining an improved microstructure with a reduced degradation rate and a non-cytotoxic in vitro outcome, which supports efficient bone tissue regeneration and its integration into the body for complex biomedical applications. Safe and efficient operation of port cranes is vital for maintaining the efficiency of global maritime logistics. However, traditional non-destructive testing methods face significant limitations in harsh port environments, such as periodic inspection intervals, restricted access to structural components, and a lack of real-time monitoring. This review explores the emerging paradigm of remote non-destructive testing through the integration of vibration and acoustic emission sensors with Internet of Things platforms. By enabling continuous, real-time monitoring, these sensor systems can detect early indicators of mechanical degradation, structural fatigue, and corrosion. This study synthesizes findings from over 100 peer-reviewed sources and identifies a significant gap in the application of these technologies to port cranes. Although vibration and acoustic emission sensors have been widely studied in various fields, their application to port cranes remains underexplored, presenting a novel and promising avenue for future research and practical applications. The unique operational demands and structural complexities of port cranes, coupled with their critical role in global trade logistics, make them ideal for leveraging these sensors in tandem with Internet of Things solutions. This integration not only overcomes the limitations of traditional non-destructive testing methods, but also offers substantial benefits, including enhanced safety, reduced inspection costs, and improved operational efficiency. This review concludes by proposing future research directions to enhance sensor performance, data analytics, and Internet of Things integration, paving the way for predictive maintenance strategies that increase operational uptime and improve safety in port crane operations. Wildfires critically affect ecosystems, carbon cycles, and public health. COVID-19 restrictions provided a unique opportunity to study human activity’s role in wildfire regimes. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of pandemic-induced wildfire regime changes across global fire-prone regions. Using MODIS data (2010–2022), we analyzed fire patterns during the pandemic (2020–2022) against pre-pandemic baselines. Key findings include: (a) A 22% global decline in wildfire hotspots during 2020–2022 compared to 2015–2019, with the most pronounced reduction occurring in 2022; (b) Contrasting regional trends: reduced fire activity in tropical zones versus intensified burning in boreal regions; (c) Stark national disparities, exemplified by Russia’s net increase of 59,990 hotspots versus Australia’s decrease of 60,380 in 2020; (d) Seasonal shifts characterized by December declines linked to mobility restrictions, while northern summer fires persisted due to climate-driven factors. Notably, although climatic factors predominantly govern fire regimes in northern latitudes, anthropogenic ignition sources such as agricultural burning and accidental fires substantially contribute to both fire incidence and associated emissions. The pandemic period demonstrated that while human activity restrictions reduced ignition sources in tropical regions, fire activity in boreal ecosystems during these years exhibited persistent correlations with climatic variables, reinforcing climate’s pivotal—though not exclusive—role in shaping fire regimes. This underscores the need for integrated wildfire management strategies that address both human and climatic factors through regionally tailored approaches. Future research should explore long-term shifts and adaptive management frameworks. Full article

Fiber–aerogel composites have gained significant attention as high-performance thermal insulation materials due to their unique microstructure, which suppresses conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. At room temperature, silica aerogels in particular exhibit ultralow thermal conductivity (<0.02 W/m·K), which is two to three times lower than that of still air (0.026 W/m·K). Their brittle skeleton and high infrared transparency, however, restrict how well they insulate, particularly at high temperatures (>300 °C). Incorporating microscale fibers into the aerogel matrix enhances mechanical strength and reduces radiative heat transfer by increasing scattering and absorption. For instance, it has been demonstrated that adding glass fibers reduces radiative heat transmission by around 40% because of increased infrared scattering. This review explores the fundamental mechanisms governing radiative heat transfer in fiber–aerogel composites, emphasizing absorption, scattering, and extinction coefficients. We discuss recent advancements in fiber-reinforced aerogels, focusing on material selection, structural modifications, and predictive heat transfer models. Recent studies indicate that incorporating fiber volume fractions as low as 10% can reduce the thermal conductivity of composites by up to 30%, without compromising their mechanical integrity. Key analytical and experimental methods for determining radiative properties, including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and numerical modeling approaches, are examined. The emissivity and transmittance of fiber–aerogel composites have been successfully measured using FTIR spectroscopy; tests show that fiber reinforcement at high temperatures reduces emissivity by about 15%. We conclude by outlining the present issues and potential avenues for future research to optimize fiber–aerogel composites for high-temperature applications, including energy-efficient buildings (where long-term thermal stability is necessary), electronics thermal management systems, and aerospace (where temperatures may surpass 1000 °C), with a focus on improving the materials’ affordability and scalability for industrial applications. To tackle this issue, we propose a BA2MAPb2I7/PEA2MA2Pb3I10 bilayer heterostructure, where efficient interlayer energy transfer (ET) facilitates compensation for the restricted charge transport across the organic spacer. Our findings reveal that under 532 nm light illumination, the BA2MAPb2I7/PEA2MA2Pb3I10 heterostructure photodetector exhibits a significant photocurrent enhancement compared with that of the pure PEA2MA2Pb3I10 device, mainly due to the contribution of the ET process. In contrast, under 600 nm light illumination, where ET is absent, the enhancement is rather limited, emphasizing the critical role of ET in boosting device performance. The overlap of the PL emission peak of BA2MAPb2I7 with the absorption spectra of PEA2MA2Pb3I10, alongside the PL quenching of BA2MAPb2I7 and the enhanced emission of PEA2MA2Pb3I10 provide confirmation of the existence of ET in the BA2MAPb2I7/PEA2MA2Pb3I10 heterostructure. Furthermore, the PL enhancement factor followed a 1/d2 relationship with the thickness of the hBN layer, indicating that ET originates from 2D-to-2D dipole–dipole coupling. This study not only highlights the potential of leveraging ET mechanisms to overcome the limitations of interlayer CT, but also contributes to the fundamental understanding required for engineering advanced 2D HOIP optoelectronic systems. In an effort to restrict further increases in climate change, governments and companies are exploring ways to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this context, the oil industry, which contributes to indirect GHG emissions, is seeking ways to develop solutions to this issue. One such approach focuses on the connection of offshore oil production platforms to the onshore power grid via high-voltage direct current (HVDC), enabling a total or partial reduction in the number of local generators, which are generally powered by gas turbines. Therefore, this work aims to determine the technical feasibility, based on transient and dynamic stability analyses, of electrifying a system composed of six floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units connected to a hub, which is powered by the onshore grid through submarine cables using HVDC technology. The analysis includes significant contingencies that could lead the system to undesirable operating conditions, allowing for the identification of appropriate remedial control actions. The analysis, based on real data and parameters, was carried out using PSCAD software. The results show that the modeled system is technically viable and could be adopted by oil companies. In addition to aligning with global warming mitigation goals, the proposal includes a complex system modeling approach, with the aim of enabling further study. Full article

Petroleum-based insulating liquids have traditionally been used in the electrical industry for cooling and insulation. However, their environmental drawbacks, such as non-biodegradability and ecological risks, have led to increasing regulatory restrictions. As a sustainable alternative, vegetable-based insulating liquids have gained attention due to their biodegradability, non-toxicity to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and lower carbon emissions. Adopting vegetable-based insulating liquids also aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 and 13, which focus on cleaner energy sources and reducing carbon emissions. Despite these benefits, most commercially available vegetable-based insulating liquids are derived from edible seed oils, raising concerns about food security and the environmental footprint of large-scale agricultural production, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. In recent years, waste cooking oils (WCOs) have emerged as a promising resource for industrial applications through waste-to-value conversion processes. However, their potential as transformer insulating liquids remains largely unexplored due to limited research and available data. This review explores the feasibility of utilizing waste cooking oils as green transformer insulating liquids. It examines the conversion and purification processes required to enhance their suitability for insulation applications, evaluates their dielectric and thermal performance, and assesses their potential implementation in transformers based on existing literature. The objective is to provide a comprehensive assessment of waste cooking oil as an alternative insulating liquid, highlight key challenges associated with its adoption, and outline future research directions to optimize its properties for high-voltage transformer applications. Mine water treatment and emissions have become important factors that restrict the comprehensive benefits of coal enterprises and local economic development, and the use of the deep well recharge method can address the specific conditions of mine surge water. This paper takes the actual situation of coal mine water treatment as an example and innovatively carries out dynamic tests for the Ordovician limestone aquifers deep in the mine. Intermittent reinjection test shows that under the same reinjection time, the water level recovery rate during the intermittent period is fast at first and then slow. Moreover, the recovery speed of the water level buried depth slows down with the increase in the reinjection time, which reveals the characteristics of the water level rising rapidly and recovering quickly during the reinjection of the reservoir. The average formation water absorption index is 420.81 m3/h·MPa. The water level buried depth of the long-term reinjection test showed three stages (rapid rise, slow rise, and stable stages), and the water level buried depth was raised to 1.52 m at its highest. Monitoring data from the surrounding 5 km area showed that reinjection did not affect aquifer water levels, verifying the excellent storage capacity of the deep Ordovician fissure-karst aquifer. The variability of well loss under pumping and injection conditions was comparatively analyzed, and the well loss produced by the recharge test was 4.06 times higher than that of the pumping test, which provided theoretical support for the calculation of hydrogeological parameters to eliminate the influence of well loss. This study deepens the understanding of Ordovician limestone aquifers in deep mine water, providing a reference for cheap mine water treatment and sustainable groundwater management in similar mine areas. Reclaiming coastal wetlands for agricultural purposes has led to intensified farming activities, which are anticipated to affect greenhouse gas (GHG) flux processes within coastal wetland ecosystems. However, how greenhouse gas exchanges respond to variations in agricultural reclamation activities across different years remains uncertain. To address this knowledge gap, this study characterized dynamic exchanges within the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum by employing continuous monitoring across four representative coastal wetland soil–vegetation systems in Jiangsu, China. The results show the carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) flux exchanges between the system and the atmosphere and soil–vegetation carbon pools, which revealed the drivers of carbon dynamics in the coastal wetland system. The four study sites, converted from coastal wetlands to agricultural lands at different times (years), generally act as CO2 sinks and N2O sources. Higher levels of CO2 sequestration occur as the age of reclamation rises. In terms of time scale, crops lands were found to be CO2 sinks during the growing period but became CO2 sources during the crop fallow period. Although the temporal trend of the N2O flux was generally smooth, reclaimed farmlands acted as net sources of N2O, particularly during the crop-growing period. The RDA and PLS-PM models illustrate that soil salinity, acidity, and hydrothermal conditions were the key drivers affecting the magnitude of the GHG flux exchanges under reclamation. This study demonstrates that GHG emissions from reclaimed wetlands can be effectively regulated through science-based land management, calling for prioritized attention to post-development practices rather than blanket restrictions on coastal exploitation.
