Using a Poisson regression model with a quadratic term and data from a 2022 survey of rice farmers across 10 counties in China’s Jianghan Plain, this study examines how the off-farm income shares are associated with the interplay between survival and sustainability imperatives in farmers’ adoption of arable land protection (ALP) practices. The results reveal an inverted U-shaped relationship between the off-farm income shares and ALP adoption. However, the off-farm income shares are negatively associated with ALP adoption overall. The association is consistent with several channels: disruption of farming time, increased distance from cropland, reduction in operational scale, and weakened awareness of ALP. Furthermore, significant differences in ALP adoption are observed among full-time farmers, part-time I farmers, and part-time II farmers, with the latter exhibiting the lowest level of ALP adoption. These findings provide empirical evidence on how off-farm income shares correlate with land management decisions and offer implications for tailored agricultural policy interventions. Full article

Aphids are among the most economically important pests affecting agricultural productivity worldwide. Despite various control strategies, managing aphid populations remains a challenge due to their rapid reproduction, ability to transmit pathogenic plant viruses, and their resistance to insecticides. The present article presents the current major difficulties experienced in the control of aphid pests, detailing various case studies, whilst recent scientific findings from Europe, the United States of America, and other global regions are described in order to clarify the challenges and the possibilities in sustainable pest management. Overall, we conclude that the complexity of aphid pest control demands integrated management strategies supported by robust policy frameworks. Enhanced collaboration between researchers, policymakers, farmers, and industry stakeholders is essential to develop sustainable solutions that address both immediate pest control needs and long-term agroecosystem resilience. Furthermore, studies are necessary, which especially include molecular genetics and ecological assessments, in order to understand the life history and rapid evolution of aphids, and hence, formulate the most rational means to combat them, both in the greenhouse and field. Achieving a balance between economic expansion and environmental preservation is a core challenge of sustainable development. Based on panel data from 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta region from 2006 to 2023, this study develops a digital economy index, measures GTFP using the SBM-GML framework, and examines the relationship between digital economy development and GTFP. The results show that digital economy development is positively associated with GTFP, and the findings remain robust after a series of robustness and endogeneity tests. Further moderating analysis indicates that industrial structure rationalization, industrial structure advancement, green innovation, and ecological compensation policy strengthen the relationship between digital economy development and GTFP. Heterogeneity analysis shows that this relationship is stronger in high-tier cities, highly urbanized cities, and Broadband China demonstration cities. Spatial analysis further suggests that digital economy development may generate spillover effects through intercity linkages within the Yangtze River Delta. By integrating digital transformation, ecological governance, regional interdependence, and green productivity improvement into a unified analytical framework, this study provides city-level evidence for promoting coordinated green transformation and sustainable regional development. The surging integration of volatile renewable energy severely exacerbates power grid frequency fluctuations, yet conventional frequency regulation (FR) market clearing mechanisms fail to efficiently coordinate heterogeneous energy storage systems (ESSs) due to the complete decoupling of multi-dimensional physical performance from economic dispatch. To resolve this critical industry bottleneck, this paper proposes a novel Stackelberg game-based clearing mechanism tailored for diverse ESS participation. A bi-level optimization framework is constructed to internalize physical FR characteristics into market economics; the upper level minimizes the system operator’s total procurement costs by transforming multi-dimensional physical metrics—including dynamic response rates, time delays, and control accuracy—into endogenous performance penalty factors. Concurrently, the lower level maximizes the individual revenues of heterogeneous ESS aggregators under a Gini coefficient-based fairness constraint to mitigate profit monopolization and promote a more sustainable market ecology. To address the computational challenges of high-dimensional non-convexity, an enhanced hybrid Genetic Algorithm and Quadratic Programming (GA-QP) solver is developed to secure robust convergence to the Stackelberg equilibrium. Comprehensive simulation results confirm that the proposed Stackelberg game-based clearing mechanism enables a highly rational, quality-driven allocation of frequency regulation capacity. By dynamically linking physical performance metrics with economic benefit factors, it successfully achieves an optimal balance of interests between heterogeneous energy storage aggregators and the overarching market. Crucially, compared to conventional purely economic models, this mechanism structurally prevents absolute technology monopoly—drastically reducing the market Gini coefficient from a hazardous 0.85 to a healthy 0.32—while sustaining multi-party equity at a negligible system cost increase of only 1.64%. Ultimately, this framework offers a highly feasible and resilient solution for the efficient clearing of multi-type energy storage in modern power systems. Full article

Against the backdrop of increasingly stringent natural forest protection and comprehensive logging bans, forest-dependent regions confront structural constraints between ecological conservation and economic development, necessitating the exploration of alternative livelihood pathways and collaborative governance mechanisms. As a cross-regional institutional synergy arrangement, the “Poverty-Relief Enclave” model integrates factor resources and industrial platforms, thereby offering a new trajectory for income source transformation and industrial succession in forest areas. However, its operational process entails multi-agent interactions and complex incentive and constraint relationships, and the stability of cooperation still warrants systematic investigation. In light of this, this paper constructs a quadripartite evolutionary game model encompassing the host government, the home government, the forest region industrial alliance, and the village collective. Within a bounded rationality and dynamic evolutionary framework, it analyzes the multi-agent strategic evolution process and its stability conditions. The findings reveal that the “Poverty-Relief Enclave” model in forest regions does not spontaneously converge to a high-level cooperative state; rather, three types of stable equilibria may emerge under varying cost–benefit structures and institutional incentives. An ideal state of multi-agent synergy is attainable only under conditions of incentive compatibility. Coordinated supervision by both governments, incentives for high-quality production by industrial entities, and guaranteed participation of village collectives are identified as pivotal factors shaping cooperation stability. The cross-regional institutional arrangement facilitating the “outward shift of income sources” helps alleviate pressure on direct forest resource utilization and fortifies the institutional enforcement foundation through grassroots participation mechanisms. From the perspectives of forest governance and multi-agent collaboration, this study unveils the intrinsic operating mechanism of the “Poverty-Relief Enclave” model in forest regions, thereby furnishing a theoretical underpinning for sustainable transformation and institutional innovation in forest-dependent areas. Most existing studies on winter tourism focus on destination development and resource evaluation, while systematic exploration of policy performance assessment remains insufficient. From the perspective of new institutional economics, this study innovatively introduces institutional change theory into the field of winter tourism policy evaluation. It deconstructs the three-dimensional evolution of policies—covering “design, implementation, and outcome”—and incorporates satisfaction feedback from four stakeholders: the government, tourism enterprises, local residents, and tourists. This establishes a systematic “three-dimensional, four-stakeholder” evaluation framework. To address the difficulty in obtaining policy performance data and improve the scientific rigor of empirical research, a combined subjective and objective weighting measurement system is adopted, integrating three core research instruments: the Delphi method is used to screen and confirm evaluation indicators and their connotations to ensure the rationality and pertinence of the evaluation system; the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is applied to determine the weight of each evaluation indicator, realizing scientific and quantitative weighting of subjective and objective indicators; and questionnaire surveys are conducted to collect first-hand data on the satisfaction of the four stakeholder groups, providing empirical support for subsequent performance evaluation. This study surveyed 7 government staff, 15 tourism enterprise practitioners, 90 local residents, and 90 tourists, yielding 202 valid samples after screening. The results indicate that Lhasa’s “Winter Tour in Tibet” policy series achieved an overall effectiveness rating of B. Key deficiencies identified include insufficient public participation, low policy awareness, and weak ecological benefits. Consequently, it proposes localized optimization paths, such as “ecological winter tourism” and “targeted publicity”. This study establishes a theoretical framework for winter tourism policy evaluation, improves the methodological system for tourism policy research in special regions, provides a practical reference for the formulation and optimization of winter tourism policies in high-altitude ethnic areas, and expands the geographical coverage and theoretical boundaries of winter tourism policy research. The rapid development of metropolitan areas means that their spatial patterns must be reconstructed and brings a series of urban problems such as traffic congestion and imbalance among transportation facilities. As the skeleton of the comprehensive transportation network, the planning of passenger corridors in metropolitan areas has a positive impact on the integrative development of urban spaces and transportation systems. The identification of passenger corridors is the basis for the optimization of the configuration and organization of transportation facilities. In this paper, passenger transportation modes were distinguished through a multilayer network. Considering the technological and economic characteristics of each mode synthetically, an improved method for identifying passenger corridors was proposed. First, a multilayer network was constructed based on the passenger transportation facilities network in a metropolitan area to distinguish between different transportation modes. Based on the traditional importance degree model of nodes, an importance degree model of routes was constructed by considering transportation modes, passenger demand, and transportation costs. Through qualitative judging using regional planning, supported by quantification according to the importance degree of routes, passenger corridors in the chosen metropolitan area were identified and divided into primary and secondary corridors. Suzhou metropolitan area was studied as an example. Identification results for three transverse corridors and two longitudinal corridors were obtained after analysis and calculation, verifying the availability of the method. The study can contribute to the balance of transportation supply and demand, realize the intensive use of transportation facilities, and promote the sustainable development of metropolitan transportation systems. In particular, the proposed method provides a reference for the rational optimization of transportation facility configuration within passenger corridors in metropolitan development areas, facilitating the formation of efficient passenger transport organization systems and compact, transit-oriented land use patterns by improving the coordination between passenger corridors and ecological spaces. Amid the dual pressures of ecological conservation and livelihood sustainability on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, investigating the economic effects of herders’ adaptation strategies holds practical relevance. Focusing on grass-based livestock husbandry, this study examines 327 pastoral households in Xinghai County, Qinghai Province, using endogenous switching regression models to empirically analyze the determinants, economic effects, and underlying mechanisms of herders’ production transformation. The main contribution is providing new empirical evidence for understanding herders’ adaptive strategies and informing policy design. The findings reveal that: (1) Transformation decisions are rational choices shaped by household resource endowments. Households with more labor and larger pasture areas are more likely to transform, while non-pastoral employment partially substitutes for such transformation. (2) Production transformation significantly increases herders’ pastoral income. Under the counterfactual framework, the income enhancement effect amounts to 21,509.08 Yuan for the transformed group and 741.30 Yuan for the non-transformed group. Income growth in the transformed group mainly stems from specialized livestock production, whereas the non-transformed group relies more on gradual improvements and policy compensation. (3) Production transformation promotes large-scale breeding without affecting livestock mortality rates. Efficiency gains from transformation are significant only for the transformed group; forcing non-transformers to adopt transformation under current endowments may lead to efficiency losses. These findings suggest that the government should prioritize supporting herders with both the capacity and willingness to transform, address barriers faced by vulnerable groups, and emphasize productivity enhancement and moderate-scale operations to facilitate sustainable income growth. Reconciling economic growth with environmental protection continues to represent a central global challenge. As one of the world’s largest developing economies, China has advanced an ecological civilization strategy that offers a unique opportunity to evaluate how national policy can shape sustainable development trajectories. This study assesses whether China’s ecological civilization construction enhances urban green total factor productivity (GTFP). Using panel data for 283 Chinese cities (2006–2019), this study identifies ecological civilization pilot cities through a standardized and reproducible protocol, measures urban GTFP using the Global Malmquist–Luenberger (GML) index and estimates policy effects with a multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) design that accounts for staggered implementation and overlapping policies. The results indicate that urban GTFP exhibited an overall upward but fluctuating trend during the study period, with regional growth rates ranking East > Central > West and a tendency toward convergence in recent years. The analysis further indicates that national ecological civilization construction policies exert a statistically significant and positive effect on urban GTFP, with the findings remaining robust to parallel trend tests and multiple robustness checks. The promotion effect displays marked regional heterogeneity, being strongest in western cities, followed by eastern and central regions, and remains positive across different urban contexts, including resource-based and non-resource-based cities as well as cities within and outside the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Mechanism analysis further reveals that the policy effect operates primarily through industrial upgrading and green technological innovation, whereas the industrial structure rationalization channel is not statistically significant. Overall, this study provides a transparent and reproducible framework for pilot city identification and causal evaluation, offering policy-relevant insights for differentiated and region-specific ecological governance aimed at balanced regional development, industrial upgrading, and green technological innovation. The ongoing development of the economy and society has increasingly intensified the imbalance between the supply and demand of land resources. Achieving coordinated development between socio-economic growth and the “Production-Living-Ecological” functions of land-use is therefore a key foundation for high-quality regional development. In light of this, this study focuses on Henan Province at the county level. Building on a theoretical framework that examines the relationship between socio-economic development and the “Production-Living-Ecological” functions of land-use, we employed methods including the entropy method, linear weighting method, mechanical equilibrium model, and curve estimation model. These were used to explore the evolution characteristics and interactive relationship between socio-economic development and the “Production-Living-Ecological” functions at the county level in Henan Province. The findings reveal that: (1) The socio-economic development level of counties in Henan showed an overall upward trend during the study period, with the average value rising from 0.2320 in 2010 to 0.2702 in 2023. High-level areas were mainly concentrated in the central region around Zhengzhou. (2) The overall level of the “Production-Living-Ecological” functions of land-use in Henan’s counties followed a gradually increasing trend, with a relatively stable evolution process. The functional levels in northern, central, and eastern Henan were notably higher than those in the western and southern regions. (3) There is a significant positive correlation between the socio-economic development level of counties in Henan and the comprehensive level of the “Production-Living-Ecological” functions of land-use. Moreover, socio-economic development exerts a one-way influence on the functional level of “Production-Living-Ecological” in land-use. Identifying the interactive relationship between socio-economic factors and these land-use functions can provide quantitative references and a decision-making basis for rationally adjusting the “Production-Living-Ecological” functions across different stages of development. The construction of high-speed railways (HSRs) is the core engine for promoting the economic integration and spatial structure optimization of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Changes in land use along HSR corridors are inextricably linked to the efficacy of regional coordinated development and ecological protection initiatives, as well as the realization of regional sustainable development. Nevertheless, past relevant studies exhibit prominent limitations. First, the lack of effective methodologies for the intuitive comparison of multiple research subjects makes it difficult to accurately portray the differential characteristics of land use across various HSR routes. Second, the insufficient comprehensive analysis of the dynamic evolution of landscape patterns along routes, coupled with the absence of intuitive spatial visualization expressions, fails to explicitly reveal the spatiotemporal differentiation of landscape fragmentation, which hinders sustainable land resource utilization and ecological protection. To address these gaps, this study introduces the intensity comparison map and the comprehensive index map of landscape fragmentation and takes six typical HSRs in the GBA to conduct an intuitive comparative analysis of land use changes along multiple routes. Results show that land use evolution along HSRs presents distinct phased characteristics, with construction land acting as the core driving factor. Its proportion increases continuously, while the proportions of cultivated land and water bodies decline dramatically. Significant disparities exist in land use evolution across different HSR routes, which are closely associated with the natural and economic conditions of the traversed regions, reflecting the heterogeneous adaptability between individual routes and regional development dynamics. High landscape fragmentation areas are predominantly distributed in the transition zones between construction land and natural landscapes; fragmentation intensifies during the planning and construction phases and stabilizes or even diminishes along certain routes during the operation phase, with human activities identified as the pivotal influencing factor. This research deepens the understanding of the interaction mechanism between transportation infrastructure and land use changes in the GBA and provides a scientific basis for sustainable HSR construction planning, the rational utilization of land resources, and the coordinated advancement of ecological protection in the GBA and other similar regions worldwide, thus facilitating the sustainable development of high-density urban agglomerations globally. A novel two-stage adaptive indicator reduction model is proposed, one which combines the TOPSIS method with an objective optimization model to select key indicators tailored to different ecoregions. Using this model, we evaluated the spatiotemporal dynamics of ecosystem health across China from 2001 to 2021. The results demonstrate the following: (1) The selected indicators effectively reflect regional ecological characteristics, with higher-weighted indicators aligning widely with the existing literature, demonstrating the system’s scientific validity and rationality. (2) Ecosystem health exhibits significant spatial variability, generally higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest. Over 21 years, health status remained relatively stable, with the improved areas (4.21%) primarily being located west of the Heihe–Tengchong line and north of the Qinling–Huaihe line, and exceeding the degraded areas. With the deepening of international trade and the increasing shortage of land resources, the importance of virtual soil trade in grain has become increasingly prominent. Based on FAO data, this study constructs the virtual soil trade network of wheat, rice, corn and soybean in the major G20 grain trading countries in 2013 and 2023, measures its network characteristics, and uses the exponential random graph model to explore its influencing factors from three dimensions of economic scale, geographical characteristics and resource endowment. The results show that: (1) virtual land trade is essentially a redistribution mechanism of land use pressure, rather than a simple grain flow; (2) the formation of network is driven by exogenous economic factors and endogenous relations; and (3) the role of each country in the network varies with the grain and food category and the development stage, showing a systematic differentiation. It is suggested that the allocation of land resources should be optimized according to the differences in virtual land flows in different countries and food categories. Since the export of virtual land is accompanied by ecological costs (such as deforestation, soil degradation, and water consumption), sustainability must be integrated into trade policies. Rations involve national security strategy, and it is necessary to strengthen domestic productivity and strategic reserves. Feed grain can use the market mechanism to promote trade liberalization and diversification, and reduce the risk of supply chain concentration while giving full play to the global comparative advantage. With global economic development and rising living standards, expectations regarding the quality of staple rice have become increasingly multifaceted. This shift has imposed more stringent demands on high-quality rice breeding and field management and has stimulated research into the mechanisms underlying changes in rice quality. This article explores how assessments of rice quality have evolved from a primary emphasis on appearance, eating and processing quality to include stronger requirements for nutritional value and safety. In rice production systems, quality outcomes are influenced by interactions among genetic traits, ecological factors and field management practices. Through genetic improvement, biological breeding techniques and precise field management, improvements in appearance, eating and nutritional qualities can be achieved. Although climate change is an uncontrollable external factor affecting rice quality, constructing multi-factor dynamic simulation models that target key genes has been proposed as a strategy to enhance stress resistance and guide rice breeding. Rice safety and quality depend on the rational use of pesticides in terms of timing and dosage, which can help mitigate disease and insect resistance while reducing the risks associated with pesticide residues and toxins. Furthermore, the application of artificial intelligence technologies in biological breeding and field management can shorten breeding cycles, improve disease and pest outbreak prediction and support the timely formulation of treatment prescriptions. Under the combined influence of global climate change and intensified human activities, quantifying ecological compensation (EC) amounts between regions and formulating scientifically sound and rational policies have become critical strategies for addressing the imbalance between economic development and ecological conservation. This study focuses on the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) as the research subject, assesses ecosystem service supply and demand (ESSD) in the years 2000, 2010, and 2020 from the perspective of the water-energy-food nexus (WEF-Nexus), identifies ecosystem service flows (ESF) between supply and demand areas, develops an integrated EC model incorporating ecological, economic, and social dimensions to estimate EC amounts, and ultimately employs the XGBoost-SHAP model to analyze the underlying driving mechanisms. The results indicate the following: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the spatio-temporal variations in the three ESSDs in the YREB were substantial. Additionally, imbalances in ESSDs were observed, predominantly in economically advanced regions. (2) A total of 183 ESFs were identified among cities within the YREB, reflecting relatively active exchanges of ecosystem services (ESs). (3) Over the past two decades, the average annual total EC of the YREB amounted to 46,866.35 million yuan, with EC capital flows occurring in 117 cities. The proportion of water area in each city constitutes the primary driver of the EC amount. The EC model based on the “water-energy-food” ecosystem service flow (WEF-ESF) proposed in this study provides a valuable reference and scientific basis for formulating EC policies among YREB cities.
