“We Begin in Water, and We Return to Water”: Track Rock Tradition Petroglyphs of Northern Georgia and Western North Carolina

Petroglyph motifs from 23 sites and 37 panels in northern Georgia and western North Carolina foothills and mountains are analyzed within their archaeological, ethnographic, and landscape contexts. The Track Rock Tradition comprises 10 chronologically sequenced marking categories: (1) Cupules/Meanders/Open Circles; (2) Soapstone Extraction cars; (3) Vulva Shapes; (4) Figures; (5) Feet/Hands/Tracks; (6) Nested Circles; (7) Cross-in-Circles; (8) Spirals; (9) Straight Lines; and (10) Thin Incised Lines. Dating spans approximately 3800 years. Early cupules and meanders predate 3000 years ago, truncated by Late Archaic soapstone extraction. Woodland period (3000–1050 years ago) motifs include vulva shapes, figures, feet, tracks, and hands. Early Mississippian concentric circles date to 1050–600 years ago, while Middle Mississippian cross-in-circles span 600–350 years ago. Late Mississippian spirals (350–200 years ago) and post-contact metal tool incisions represent the most recent phases. The Track Rock Tradition differs from western Trapp and eastern Hagood Mill traditions. Given the spatial overlap with Iroquoian-speaking Cherokee territory, motifs are interpreted through Cherokee beliefs, supplemented by related Muskogean Creek ethnography. In Cherokee cosmology, the matrilocal Thunderers hierarchy includes the Female Sun/Male Moon, Selu (Corn Mother)/Kanati (Lucky Hunter), Medicine Woman/Judaculla (Master of Game), and Little People families. Ritual practitioners served as intermediaries between physical and spirit realms through purification, fasting, body scratching, and rock pecking. Meanders represent trails, rivers, and lightning. Cupules and lines emphasize the turtle appearance of certain rocks. Vulva shapes relate to fertility, while tracks connect to life-giving abilities. Concentric circles denote townhouses; cross-in-circles and spirals represent central fires. The tradition shows continuity in core beliefs despite shifting emphases from hunting (Woodland) to corn cultivation (Mississippian), with petroglyphs serving as necessary waypoints for spiritual supplicants. Minimally Invasive Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass as Palliative Revascularization in High-Risk Patients

Background: In high-risk and frail patients with multivessel coronary artery disease (MV CAD), guidelines indicated complete revascularization with or without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) bears a high morbidity and mortality risk. In cases where catheter interventions were deemed unsuitable and conventional coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) posed an unacceptable perioperative risk, patients were scheduled for minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) grafting or minimally invasive multivessel coronary artery bypass grafting (MICS-CABG). We called this approach “palliative revascularization.” This study assesses the safety and impact of palliative revascularization on clinical outcomes and overall survival. Methods: A consecutive series of 57 patients undergoing MIDCAB or MICS-CABG as a palliative surgery between 2008 and 2018 was included. The decision for palliative surgery was met in heart team after carefully assessing each case. The patients underwent single or double-vessel revascularization using the left internal thoracic artery and rarely radial artery/saphenous vein segments, both endoscopically harvested. Inpatient data could be completed for all 57 patients. The mean follow-up interval was 4.2 ± 3.7 years, with a follow-up rate of 91.2%. Results: Mean patient age was 79.7 ± 7.4 years. Overall, 46 patients (80.7%) were male, 26 (45.6%) had a history of atrial fibrillation and 25 (43.9%) of chronic kidney disease. In total, 13 patients exhibited a moderate EuroSCORE II, while 27 were classified as high risk, with a EuroSCORE II exceeding 5%. Additionally, 40 patients (70.2%) presented with three-vessel disease, 17 (29.8%) suffered an acute myocardial infarction within three weeks prior to surgery and 50.9% presented an impaired ejection fraction. There were 48 MIDCAB and nine MICS CABG with no conversions either to sternotomy or to CPB. Eight cases were planned as hybrid procedures and only 15 patients (26.3%) were completely revascularized. During the first 30 days, four patients (7%) died. A myocardial infarction occurred in only one case, no patient necessitated immediate reoperation. The one-, three- and five-year survival rates were 83%, 67% and 61%, respectively. Conclusions: MIDCAB and MICS CABG can be successfully conducted as less invasive palliative surgery in high-risk multimorbid patients with MV CAD. The early and mid-term results were better than predicted. A higher rate of hybrid procedures could improve long-term outcome in selected cases. Full article

Anomalies of coronary artery origins are rare but significant conditions that can range from benign to life-threatening. Early detection through imaging is crucial in preventing adverse outcomes. The treatment strategy varies depending on the type and severity of the anomaly, ranging from pharmacological treatment to surgery. A 22-year-old male patient, after syncope, after excluding other causes, had an exercise drill test, which was clinically negative and ECG-positive. Angio-CT revealed an undeveloped left main coronary artery (LMCA), and the circulation was supplied through the right coronary artery (RCA). The RCA provides the left anterior descending artery (LAD), and the LAD retrogradely supplies the left circumflex artery (LCX). The myocardial perfusion scintigraphy showed a slight lack of perfusion in the anterior wall (6% of total perfusion). The patient was qualified for further observation. A 77-year-old female underwent cardiac CT due to stenocardia. CT showed a lack of LMCA. The initial segment of the RCA gave rise to the left coronary artery (LCA), which encircled the aortic bulb posteriorly and bifurcated into branches resembling the LCX and LAD. After the Heart Team consultation, the patient was deemed eligible for conservative treatment. Angio-CT is a valuable tool for detecting coronary artery anomalies. Full article

Anatomical Risk Patterns for Patellofemoral Instability in Skeletally Immature Patients: A Sex-Stratified MRI Study

Background/Objectives: Lateral patellar dislocation (LPD) is a common pathology of the adolescent knee and a major predisposing factor for patellofemoral instability (PFI). The pathogenesis of PFI involves a combination of anatomical and biomechanical contributors, with increasing evidence pointing to sex-specific differences in knee morphology. Despite this, the developmental course of these parameters and their variation between sexes remain insufficiently characterized. This study aims to investigate sex-related differences in patellofemoral joint geometry among skeletally immature patients with a history of PFI, focusing on how these anatomical variations evolve with increasing knee size, as represented by femoral condylar width. Methods: A total of 315 knee MRIs from patients under 18 years with documented PFI were retrospectively analyzed. Trochlear morphology, patellar tilt, axial positioning, and sagittal alignment were assessed using established MRI-based parameters. All measurements were normalized to bicondylar width to account for individual knee size. Sex-specific comparisons were performed using independent t-tests and linear regression analysis. Results: Females exhibited significantly smaller femoral widths, shallower trochlear depth (TD), shorter tibial tubercle–posterior cruciate ligament (TTPCL) distances, and lower patellar trochlear index (PTI) values compared to males (p < 0.05). In males, increasing femoral width was associated with progressive normalization of patellar tilt and sagittal alignment parameters. In contrast, these alignment parameters in females remained largely unchanged or worsened across different femoral sizes. Additionally, patellar inclination angle and PTI were significantly influenced by knee size in males (p < 0.05), whereas no such relationship was identified in females. Conclusions: Sex-specific morphological differences in patellofemoral geometry are evident early in development and evolve distinctly with growth. These differences may contribute to the higher prevalence of PFI in females and underscore the importance of considering sex and knee size in anatomical assessments. Full article

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with early-life origins. Maternal obesity has been associated with increased ASD risk, yet the mechanisms and timing of susceptibility remain unclear. Using a mouse model combining in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer, we separated the effects of pre-conception and gestational obesity. We found that maternal high fat diet (HFD) exposure prior to conception alone was sufficient to induce ASD-like behaviors in male offspring—including altered vocalizations, reduced sociability, and increased repetitive grooming—without anxiety-related changes. These phenotypes were absent in female offspring and those exposed only during gestation. Cortical transcriptome analysis revealed dysregulation and isoform shifts in genes implicated in ASD, including Homer1 and Zswim6. Whole-genome bisulfite sequencing of hippocampal tissue showed hypomethylation of an alternative Homer1 promoter, correlating with increased expression of the short isoform Homer1a, which is known to disrupt synaptic scaffolding. This pattern was specific to mice with ASD-like behaviors. Our findings show that pre-conceptional maternal obesity can lead to lasting, isoform-specific transcriptomic and epigenetic changes in the offspring’s brain. These results underscore the importance of maternal health before pregnancy as a critical and modifiable factor in ASD risk. Full article

The purpose of this work was to study the effects of lactoferrin (Lf) on acute (days 3 and 15) and early-delayed (day 30) changes in the dentate gyrus of mouse hippocampus caused by whole-body gamma-irradiation. Male C57BL/6 mice received Lf (4 mg per mouse, i.p. injection) immediately after whole-body gamma-irradiation at a dose of 7.5 Gy from a 60Co source. The effect of Lf on mouse behavior was evaluated using “Open field” and “Elevated plus-maze” tests. The proportion of cells with DNA replication was determined by 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine incorporation (thymidine analog) and detected by a click reaction with azide Alexa Fluor 568. Lf treatment increased animal survival during the experiment (30 days), compensated for radiation-induced body weight loss, and prevented suppression of motor and exploratory activities. A pronounced anti-radiation effect of Lf on mouse brain cells has been demonstrated. A single injection of the protein allowed preserving 2-fold more proliferating cells and immature neurons in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus of irradiated animals during the acute period of post-radiation injury development. Background: The long-term clinical and laboratory results of a 33-year follow-up of a Greek family with abetalipoproteinemia (ABL) are described. Case Report: The patients (two brothers and their sister, aged 57, 49, and 62 years, respectively) are still alive, being under close surveillance. In two of the three patients, diarrhea appeared in early infancy, while in the third, it appeared during adolescence. CNS symptomatology worsened after the second decade of life. At the same time, night blindness appeared in the advanced stages of the disease, resulting in almost complete loss of vision in one of the male patients and severe impairment in the other. The diagnosis was based on the clinical picture, ophthalmological findings, serum lipid estimations, and presence of peripheral acanthocytosis. All patients exhibited typical serum lipidemic profile, ophthalmological findings, and acanthocytes in the peripheral blood. During the follow-up period, strict dietary modifications were applied, including the substitution of fat with medium-chain triglycerides (MCT oil). After 33 years since the initial diagnosis, all patients are alive without any sign of liver dysfunction despite continuous use of MCT oil. However, symptoms from the central nervous system and vision impairment worsened. Conclusion: The course of these patients suggests that the application of a modified diet, including MCT oil, along with close surveillance, could prolong the survival of patients without significant side effects from the liver. Background/Objective: Pharmacological interventions often exert systemic effects beyond their primary targets, underscoring the need for a comprehensive evaluation of their metabolic impact. Etodolac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that alleviates pain, fever, and inflammation by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), thereby reducing prostaglandin synthesis. While its pharmacological effects are well known, the broader metabolic impact and potential mechanisms underlying improved clinical outcomes remain underexplored. Untargeted metabolomics, which profiles the metabolome without prior selection, is an emerging tool in clinical pharmacology for elucidating drug-induced metabolic changes. In this study, untargeted metabolomics was applied to investigate metabolic changes following a single oral dose of etodolac in healthy male volunteers. By analyzing serial blood samples over time, we identified endogenous metabolites whose concentrations were positively or inversely associated with the drug’s plasma levels. This approach provides a window into both therapeutic pathways and potential off-target effects, offering a promising strategy for early-stage drug evaluation and multi-target discovery using minimal human exposure. Methods: Thirty healthy participants received a 400 mg dose of Etodolac. Plasma samples were collected at five time points: pre-dose, before Cmax, at Cmax, after Cmax, and 36 h post-dose (n = 150). Samples underwent LC/MS-based untargeted metabolomics profiling and pharmacokinetic analysis. A total of 997 metabolites were significantly dysregulated between the pre-dose and Cmax time points, with 875 upregulated and 122 downregulated. Among these, 80 human endogenous metabolites were identified as being influenced by Etodolac. Results: A total of 17 metabolites exhibited time-dependent changes closely aligned with Etodolac’s pharmacokinetic profile, while 27 displayed inverse trends. Conclusions: Etodolac influences various metabolic pathways, including arachidonic acid metabolism, sphingolipid metabolism, and the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids. These selective metabolic alterations complement its COX-2 inhibition and may contribute to its anti-inflammatory effects. This study provides new insights into Etodolac’s metabolic impact under healthy conditions and may inform future therapeutic strategies targeting inflammation. Full article

The mountainous rivers of Central Asia host diverse ichthyofauna threatened by increasing anthropogenic pressures, particularly water pollution, abstraction, and hydropower development. This study provides valuable morphometric and ecological data for Schizothorax eurycephalus (snow trout) and Triplophysa ferganaensis (stone loach) in the Shakhimardan River basin, Uzbekistan. S. eurycephalus exhibited positive allometric growth, while T. ferganaensis showed negative near-isometric growth. The mean Fulton’s Condition Factor was 1.0 for S. eurycephalus and 0.7 for T. ferganaensis, with site-specific variations. Strong correlations among morphometric parameters, particularly length–height relationships, support non-invasive monitoring techniques. Dietary analysis revealed S. eurycephalus was predominantly herbivorous, with around 70% algae consumption. Early sexual maturity was observed in S. eurycephalus males, whereas T. ferganaensis showed no clear maturity signs, but swollen bellies suggested ongoing or recent reproductive activity. These baseline morphometric and ecological data establish a solid foundation for future ecological assessments, conservation strategies, and the design and monitoring of mitigation measures to address anthropogenic impacts in this vulnerable region. This literature-based review draws on studies of thirty-four fish species; most are from northern temperate regions. Fish have flexible and indeterminate growth, and often they do not reach their growth and size potential. They may become stunted with impaired growth and early maturity, chiefly as a phenotypically plastic reaction. The main causes of stunted growth are negatively density-dependent food availability and keen intraspecific competition leading to environmental stress. Typically, their growth levels off early in life as energy consumptions approach energy costs of maintenance. Females typically attain maturity soon after the energy surplus from feeding starts to decrease. Males are often more variable in size at maturity owing to alternative mating strategies, and their size at maturity depends on both species-specific mating behaviours and environmental opportunities. In polyphenic/polymorphic populations, one phenotype may be stunted and the other phenotype non-stunted; stunted individuals do not perform the required ontogenetic niche shift needed to grow larger. The adult morphology of stunted fish is typically like the morphology of juveniles. Their secondary sexual characters are less pronounced, and they phenotypically retain adaptation to their early feeding niche, which is different from that of large-growing individuals. There are open questions regarding to what extent genetics and epigenetics regulate the life histories of stunted phenotypes. Full article

Background/Objectives: Sprinting is a fundamental locomotor skill and a key indicator of lower limb strength and anaerobic power in early childhood. The aim of the study was to examine possible differences in the step kinematic parameters and their contribution to sprint speed between children with different patterns of speed development. Methods: 65 prepubescent male and female track athletes (33 males and 32 females; 6.9 ± 0.8 years old) were examined in a maximal 15 m short sprint running test, where photocells measured time for each 5 m segment. At the last 5 m segment, step length, frequency, and velocity were evaluated via a video analysis method. The symmetry angle was calculated for the examined step kinematic parameters. Results: Based on the speed at the final 5 m segment of the test, two groups were identified, the maximum sprint phase (MAX) and the acceleration phase (ACC) group. Speed was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in ACC in the final 5 m segment, while there was a significant (p < 0.05) interrelationship between step length and frequency in ACC but not in MAX. No other differences were observed. Conclusions: The difference observed in the interrelationship between speed and step kinematic parameters between ACC and MAX highlights the importance of identifying the speed development pattern to apply individualized training stimuli for the optimization of training that can lead to better conditioning and wellbeing of children involved in sports with requirements for short-sprint actions. Background/Objectives: Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) disproportionately affects young male agricultural workers who are otherwise healthy. There is a scarcity of biomarkers for early detection of this type of kidney disease. We hypothesized that small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) released into urine may provide novel biomarkers. Methods: We obtained two urine samples at the start and the end of a workday in the fields from a limited set of workers with and without kidney impairment. Isolated sEVs were characterized for size, surface marker expression, and purity and, subsequently, their lipid composition was determined by mass spectrometry. Results: The number of particles per ml of urine normalized to osmolality and the size variance were larger in workers with possible CKDu than in control workers. Surface markers CD9, CD63, and CD81 are characteristic of sEVs and a second set of surface markers suggested the kidney as the origin. Differential expression of CD25 and CD45 suggested early inflammation in CKDu workers. Of the twenty-one lipids differentially expressed, several were bioactive, suggesting that they may have essential functions. Remarkably, fourteen of the lipids showed intermediate expression values in sEVs from healthy individuals with acute creatinine increases after a day of work. Conclusions: We identified twenty-one possible lipid biomarkers in sEVs isolated from urine that may be able to distinguish agricultural workers with early onset of CKDu. Differentially expressed surface proteins in these sEVs suggested early-stage inflammation. This pilot study was limited in the number of workers evaluated, but the approach should be further evaluated in a larger population. Full article

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare, genetically heterogeneous disorder that impairs mucociliary clearance and leads to progressive lung disease. This study aimed to characterize lung function decline in a genetically homogeneous cohort of Puerto Rican patients with RSPH4A-associated PCD and to develop a clinical tool to predict lung function decline and support transplant referral decisions. We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients (n = 25) with a confirmed RSPH4A [c.921+3_6delAAGT] genetic variant, collecting longitudinal spirometry data and applying linear regressions to calculate each patient’s individual FEV1 decline. The median FEV1 at diagnosis was 55%, with a median annual decline of −0.75% predicted. Adults exhibited significantly lower lung function compared to pediatric patients, while no difference was seen between males and females. Based on this observed decline, we developed the Predicted Capacity Decline Index (PCDx), an index that estimates the age and time until a patient reaches the 30% FEV1 threshold, the point at which lung transplant referral is typically considered. Our findings underscore the need for early intervention and suggest that genotype-specific tools like the PCDx may enhance clinical decision-making in managing progressive lung disease in PCD. (1) Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is a neurotrophin with anti-inflammatory properties. Neuroinflammation and stress activate peripheral immune mechanisms, which may contribute to the development of depression and anxiety in sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (sAD). This study aims to evaluate whether intracerebroventricular (ICV) premedication with IGF-1 in a rat model of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced neuroinflammation can prevent the emergence of anhedonia and anxiety-like behavior by impacting the peripheral inflammatory responses. (2) Male Wistar rats were subjected to double ICVSTZ (total dose: 3 mg/kg) and ICVIGF-1 injections (total dose: 2 µg). We analyzed the level of anhedonia (sucrose preference), anxiety (elevated plus maze), peripheral inflammation (hematological and cytometric measurement of leukocyte populations, interleukin (IL)-6), and corticosterone concentration at 7 (very early stage, VES), 45 (early stage, ES), and 90 days after STZ injections (late stage, LS). (3) We found that ICVIGF-1 administration reduces behavioral symptoms: anhedonia (ES and LS) and anxiety (VES, ES), and peripheral inflammation: number of leukocytes, lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, IL-6, and corticosterone concentration (LS) in the rat model of sAD. (4) The obtained results demonstrate beneficial effects of central IGF-1 administration on neuropsychiatric symptoms and peripheral immune system activation during disease progression in the rat model of sAD. Differential Effects of Green Space Typologies on Congenital Anomalies: Data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (2008–2013)

Background/Objectives: Urban green space has been increasingly recognized as a determinant of maternal and child health. This study investigated the association between prenatal exposure to different types of green space and the risk of congenital anomalies in South Korea. Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health Insurance Service (N = 142,422). Green space exposure was measured at the area level and categorized into grassland and forest; statistical analysis was performed using generalized estimating equations and generalized additive models to analyze the associations. Additionally, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed. Results: GEE analysis showed that a 10% increase in the proportion of grassland in a residential district was associated with a reduced risk of nervous system (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.77, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.63–0.94) and genitourinary system anomalies (aOR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.71–0.97). The subgroup analysis results showed significance only for male infants, but the difference between the sexes was not significant. In the quartile-based analysis, we found a slightly significant p-value for trend for the effect of forests on digestive system anomalies, but the trend was toward increasing risk. In a sensitivity analysis with different exposure classifications, the overall and nervous system anomalies in built green space showed that the risk decreased as green space increased compared to that in the lowest quartile. Conclusions: Our results highlight the importance of spatial environmental factors during pregnancy and suggest that different types of green spaces differentially impact the offspring’s early health outcomes. This study suggests the need for built environment planning as part of preventive maternal and child health strategies. Full article
