The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

Plants are constantly exposed to environmental stressors such as drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, which threaten their growth and productivity. To counter these challenges, they employ complex molecular defense systems, including epigenetic modifications that regulate gene expression without altering the underlying DNA sequence. This review comprehensively examines the emerging roles of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) as central signaling molecules orchestrating epigenetic changes in response to abiotic stress. In addition, biotic factors such as pathogen infection and microbial interactions are considered for their ability to trigger ROS/RNS generation and epigenetic remodeling. It explores how ROS and RNS influence DNA methylation, histone modifications, and small RNA pathways, thereby modulating chromatin structure and stress-responsive gene expression. Mechanistic insights into redox-mediated regulation of DNA methyltransferases, histone acetyltransferases, and microRNA expression are discussed in the context of plant stress resilience. The review also highlights cutting-edge epigenomic technologies such as whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS), chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq), and small RNA sequencing, which are enabling precise mapping of stress-induced epigenetic landscapes. By integrating redox biology with epigenetics, this work provides a novel framework for engineering climate-resilient crops through the targeted manipulation of stress-responsive epigenomic signatures. Laser cladding, a cutting-edge surface modification technique for metals, offers a novel approach to enhancing the wear and corrosion resistance of substrates due to its rapid heating and cooling capabilities, precise control over coating thickness and dilution rates, and non-contact processing characteristics. However, disparities in the physical properties between the coating material and the substrate, coupled with the improper utilization of process parameters, can lead to coating defects, thereby compromising the quality of the coating. This paper examines the effects of material systems and process parameters on laser cladding composite coatings and shows that cracking is mainly caused by thermal and residual stresses. This article summarizes the methods for crack improvement and prevention in five aspects: the selection of processes in the preparation stage, the application of auxiliary fields in the cladding process, heat treatment technology, the use of auxiliary software, and the search for new processes and new structural materials. Finally, the future development trends of laser cladding technology are presented. Full article

3D printing (3DP) enables the development of highly customizable skincare solutions, offering precise control over formulation, structure, and aesthetic properties. Therefore, this study explores the impact of patches’ microstructure on hydration efficacy using conventional and advanced chemical/morphological confocal techniques. Moreover, it advances to the personalization of under-eye 3D-printed skincare patches and assesses consumer acceptability through emotional sensing, providing a comparative analysis against a non-3D-printed market option. The results indicate that increasing the patches’ internal porosity enhances water retention in the stratum corneum (53.0 vs. 45.4% µm). Additionally, patches were personalized to address individual skin needs/conditions (design and bioactive composition) and consumer preferences (color and fragrance). The affective analysis indicated a high level of consumer acceptance for the 3D-printed option, as evidenced by the higher valence (14.5 vs. 1.1 action units) and arousal (4.2 vs. 2.7 peaks/minute) scores. These findings highlight the potential of 3DP for personalized skincare, demonstrating how structural modifications can modulate hydration. Furthermore, the biometric-preference digital approach employed offers unparalleled versatility, enabling rapid customization to meet the unique requirements of different skin types. By embracing this advancement, a new era of personalized skincare emerges, where cutting-edge science powers solutions for enhanced skin health and consumer satisfaction. Full article

Antimony (Sb) is a metalloid widely used in different areas—from the cutting-edge renewable energy technologies to “classical” lead acid batteries. Its availability in primary sources is limited, and these sources are geographically unevenly distributed worldwide. Antimony use will increase in the future. That is why Sb is included in the critical raw material lists of the European Union and the USA. In order to mitigate the future Sb shortage, Sb recovery from industrial residues is worth considering. This paper presents the availability of Sb in nonferrous metals extraction waste and the applicability of the hydrometallurgical route for Sb recovery from such sources. Leaching is emphasized. The use of acidic and alkaline leaching methods, their recent modifications, and the effect of different process parameters (reagents’ type, solid-to-liquid ratio, temperature, and the addition of oxidizing reagents) are highlighted. The use of new leaching systems, such as deep eutectic solvents and non-aqueous solutions, is presented. Initial attempts to apply bioleaching are described. Brain aging is a complex process regulated by genetic, environmental, and metabolic factors, and increasing evidence suggests that environmental pollutants can significantly accelerate this process by interfering with oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and mitochondrial function-related signaling pathways. Traditional studies have focused on the direct damage of pollutants on macromolecules (e.g., proteins, DNA), while the central role of senescence-associated small molecules (e.g., ROS, PGE2, lactate) in early regulatory mechanisms has been long neglected. In this study, we innovatively proposed a cascade framework of “small molecule metabolic imbalance-signaling pathway dysregulation-macromolecule collapse”, which reveals that pollutants exacerbate the dynamics of brain aging through activation of NLRP3 inflammatory vesicles and inhibition of HIF-1α. Meanwhile, to address the technical bottleneck of small molecule spatiotemporal dynamics monitoring, this paper systematically reviews the cutting-edge detection tools such as electrochemical sensors, genetically encoded fluorescent probes and antioxidant quantum dots (AQDs). Among them, AQDs show unique advantages in real-time monitoring of ROS fluctuations and intervention of oxidative damage by virtue of their ultra-high specific surface area, controllable surface modification, and free radical scavenging ability. By integrating multimodal detection techniques and mechanism studies, this work provides a new perspective for analyzing pollutant-induced brain aging and lays a methodological foundation for early intervention strategies based on small molecule metabolic networks. NASA’s Juno mission, involving a pioneering spacecraft the size of a basketball court, has been instrumental in observing Jupiter’s atmosphere and surface from orbit since it reached the intended orbit. Over its first decade of operation, Juno has provided unprecedented insights into the solar system’s origins through advanced remote sensing and technological innovations. This study focuses on change detection in terms of Juno’s trajectory, leveraging cutting-edge data computing techniques to analyze its orbital dynamics. Utilizing 3D position and velocity time series data from NASA, spanning 11 years and 5 months (August 2011 to January 2023), with 5.5 million samples at 1 min accuracy, we examine the spacecraft’s trajectory modifications. The instantaneous average acceleration, jerk, and snap are computed as approximations of the first, second, and third derivatives of velocity, respectively. The Hilbert transform is employed to visualize the spectral properties of Juno’s non-stationary 3D movement, enabling the detection of extreme events caused by varying forces. Two unsupervised machine learning algorithms, DBSCAN and OPTICS, are applied to cluster the sampling events in two 3D state spaces: (velocity, acceleration, jerk) and (acceleration, jerk, snap). Our results demonstrate that the OPTICS algorithm outperformed DBSCAN in terms of the outlier detection accuracy across all three operational phases (OP1, OP2, and OP3), achieving accuracies of 99.3%, 99.1%, and 98.9%, respectively. In contrast, DBSCAN yielded accuracies of 98.8%, 98.2%, and 97.4%. These findings highlight OPTICS as a more effective method for identifying outliers in elliptical orbit data, albeit with higher computational resource requirements and longer processing times. This study underscores the significance of advanced machine learning techniques in enhancing our understanding of complex orbital dynamics and their implications for planetary exploration.
