Freemium, a popular business model in the digital economy, offers a basic product for free while charging for advanced features or value-added services. This pricing strategy enables platforms to attract a broad user base and then monetize through premium offerings. Customer characteristics and service price are important factors affecting customer choice behavior in such a model. Based on consumption stickiness, we consider a monopoly that provides value-added services by incorporating a multinomial logit model into a two-stage dynamic pricing model. First, we analyze the optimal pricing of value-added services under a normal sales scenario. We then consider optimal pricing during the marketing period under two strategies—level improvement for value-added services and quality reduction for a basic product—and analyze the applicability of each. The results show that increasing the value-added service level has a positive effect on the optimal price of value-added services, whereas reducing the basic product quality has no effect on the optimal price. Furthermore, the numerical simulation shows that when the depth of consumer stickiness is low, the optimal marketing strategy reduces the quality of the basic product, the price of value-added services should be higher than that in the normal sales period but lower than the price under the level-improvement strategy for value-added services; otherwise, improving the level of the value-added services becomes the optimal approach. This study provides a theoretical basis and decision support for product quality design and service pricing that applies to freemium platforms. Full article

Economic growth, especially in emerging economies, has altered the composition of international tourism. It is therefore essential to possess the skills necessary to understand the influence of culture on human behaviour, thereby enabling an appropriate response to the traveller. This research aims to develop a tool for identifying openness, flexibility, awareness, and intercultural preparedness. It focuses on the metacognitive and cognitive aspects of cultural intelligence that shape the development of empathy in customer service staff in hotels in Quintana Roo. The variables were validated and incorporated into a quantitative study using multivariate analysis and inferential statistics. A sample of 77 questionnaires was analysed using simple random sampling under a proportional design. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) was employed as a discriminatory technique to identify the most significant independent variables. These were subsequently entered as regressors into ordinal logistic regression (OLR), along with age and work experience, in order to estimate the probabilities associated with each level of the dependent variable. The results indicated that age had minimal influence on the metacognitive and cognitive variables, whereas years of experience among tourism staff exerted a significant effect. Full article

This study investigates the optimization of urban parcel delivery by integrating logistics vehicles and onboard drones within a static road network. A centralized delivery hub is responsible for coordinating both modes of transport to minimize total vehicle operation costs and customer waiting times. A simulation-based framework is developed to accurately model the delivery process. An enhanced Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is proposed, incorporating a multi-objective formulation to improve route planning efficiency. Additionally, a scheduling algorithm is designed to synchronize the operations of multiple delivery bikes and drones, ensuring coordinated execution. The proposed integrated approach yields substantial improvements in both cost and service efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate a 16% reduction in vehicle operation costs and an 8% decrease in average customer waiting times relative to benchmark methods, indicating the practical applicability of the approach in urban logistics scenarios. Anxiety is a significant mental health concern in universities worldwide. This study examines the structure of anxiety symptoms and their relationship with contextual stressors among pre-service English teachers. The sample included 269 students enrolled in a Teaching English as a Foreign Language program at a public university in Manabí, Ecuador. Data were collected using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale and a custom-designed questionnaire identifying anxiety triggers. Results showed that while most students reported normal or mild anxiety levels, a considerable portion exhibited moderate to severe symptoms. Cluster analysis revealed three emotional profiles, with the high-anxiety group strongly associated with stressors such as economic hardship and job insecurity. Academic pressure and financial instability emerged as the strongest predictors of anxiety. These findings highlight the urgent need to develop and evaluate targeted psycho-educational strategies to prevent and reduce anxiety within teacher training programs in higher education. The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in marketing and social media is gaining scholarly interest. While AI technologies offer significant potential for enhancing customer engagement (CE), their effectiveness depends on an industry’s level of digital and AI readiness. This is especially relevant for people-centric sectors such as tourism and hospitality, where digital maturity remains relatively low. This study aims to understand how AI supports CE and social media marketing (SMM), and to identify the key antecedents and consequences of its use. Using the PRISMA approach, we conduct a systematic review of 55 peer-reviewed empirical studies on AI-based CE and SMM. Our analysis identifies the main contributing theories and AI technologies in the field, and uncovers four central themes: (1) AI in customer service and user experience design, (2) AI-based customer relationships with brands, (3) AI-driven development of customer trust, and (4) cultural differences and varying levels of AI readiness. We also develop a conceptual framework that outlines the determinants and outcomes of AI-based CE, including relevant moderators and mediators. The study concludes with directions for future research and provides theoretical and managerial implications, particularly for the tourism and hospitality industries. Full article

Design and use of wearable technology have grown exponentially, particularly in consumer products and service sectors, e.g., healthcare. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive understanding of wearable technology in consumer acceptance. This systematic review utilized a PRISMA on peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024 and collected on WoS, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. A total of 38 full-text articles were systematically reviewed and analyzed using bibliometric, thematic, and descriptive analysis to understand the technical functions of digital wearable products (DWPs) in consumer acceptance. The findings revealed four key functions: (i) wearable technology, (ii) appearance and design, (iii) biomimetic innovation, and (iv) security and privacy, found in eight types of DWPs, among them smartwatches, medical robotics, fitness devices, and wearable fashions, significantly predicted the customers’ acceptance moderated by the behavioral factors. The review also identified five key outcomes: health and fitness, enjoyment, social value, biomimicry, and market growth. The review proposed a comprehensive acceptance model that combines biomimetic principles and AI-driven features into the technical functions of the technical function model (TAM) while addressing security and privacy concerns. This approach contributes to the extended definition of TAM in wearable technology, offering new pathways for biomimetic research in smart devices and robotics. Full article

This study explores the relationship between customer satisfaction and loyalty in mobile banking, emphasizing the moderating role of Technology Readiness. As mobile banking becomes increasingly central to financial service delivery, understanding the nuanced drivers of customer loyalty is essential for strategic growth. Drawing from the Technology Readiness Index, this study examines how four dimensions, optimism, innovativeness, discomfort, and insecurity, moderate the satisfaction–loyalty linkage. Data were collected via a structured survey from 258 mobile banking users in the United States, analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Results show that optimism and innovativeness positively moderate this relationship, while discomfort and insecurity act as negative moderators. Practically, this research introduces a segmented approach to mobile banking service design, underscoring the need for differentiated strategies that address varying levels of user readiness. Theoretically, this study addresses a gap in mobile banking literature by shifting the focus from adoption to sustained usage and satisfaction-based loyalty, enriching the discourse on customer behavior in digital finance. Automated parcel lockers (APLs) are transforming urban last-mile delivery by reducing failed distributions, decoupling delivery from recipient availability, optimizing carrier routes, reducing carbon foot-print and mitigating traffic congestion. The paper investigates the optimal design of APLs systems under stochastic demand and operational constraints, formulating the problem as a resource allocation optimization with service-level guarantees. We proposed a data-driven discrete-event simulation (DES) model implemented in ARENA to (i) determine optimal locker configurations that ensure customer satisfaction under stochastic parcel arrivals and dwell times, (ii) examine utilization patterns and spatial allocation to enhance system operational efficiency, and (iii) characterize inventory dynamics of undelivered parcels and evaluate system resilience. The results show that the configuration of locker types significantly influences the system’s ability to maintain high customers service levels. While flexibility in locker allocation helps manage excess demand in some configurations, it may also create resource competition among parcel types. The heterogeneity of locker utilization gradients underscores that optimal APLs configurations must balance locker units with their size-dependent functional interdependencies. The Dickey–Fuller GLS test further validates that postponed parcels exhibit stationary inventory dynamics, ensuring scalability for logistics operators. As a theoretical contribution, the paper demonstrates how DES combined with time-series econometrics can address APLs capacity planning in city logistics. For practitioners, the study provides a decision-support framework for locker sizing, emphasizing cost–service trade-offs. Full article

Earthen flood protection structures are planned and constructed with an expected service life of several decades while being exposed to environmental impacts that may lead to structural or hydraulic failure. Current maintenance procedures involve only repairing external damage, leaving internal processes contributing to structural damage often undetected. Through structural health monitoring (SHM), structural deficits can be detected before visible damage occurs. To improve maintenance workflows and support predictive maintenance of dikes, this paper reports on the integration of digital twin concepts with SHM strategies, referred to as “digital-twin-based SHM”. A digital twin concept, including a standard-compliant building information model, is proposed and implemented in terms of a digital twin environment. For integrating monitoring and sensor data into the digital twin environment, a customized webform is designed. A communication protocol links preprocessed sensor data stored on a server with the digital twin environment, enabling model-based visualization and contextualization of the sensor data. As will be shown in this paper, a digital twin environment is set up and managed in the context of SHM in compliance with technical standards and using well-established software tools. In conclusion, digital-twin-based SHM, as proposed in this paper, has proven to advance predictive maintenance of dikes, contributing to the resilience of critical infrastructure against environmental impacts. The 5G network’s commercialization has revealed challenges in providing customized and personalized deployment and services for diverse vertical industrial use cases, leading to high cost, low resource efficiency and management efficiency, and long time to market. Although the 5G core network (CN) has adopted a service-based architecture (SBA) to enhance agility and elasticity, the radio access network (RAN) keeps the traditional integrated and rigid architecture and suffers the difficulties of customizing and personalizing the functions and capabilities. Open RAN attempted to introduce cloudification, openness, and intelligence to RAN but faced limitations due to 5G RAN specifications. To address this, this paper analyzes the experience and insights from 5G SBA and conducts a systematic study on the service-based RAN, including service definition, interface protocol stacks, impact analysis on the air interface, radio capability exposure, and joint optimization with CN. Performance verification shows significant improvements of service-based user plane design in resource utilization and scalability. Full article

Self-realization, a multifaceted concept, has long been a subject of interest in the scientific literature. Given its profound impact on overall well-being and work-related satisfaction, the development of instruments capturing its complexity assumes significant relevance. Therefore, this study presents the development and validation of the META—Measurement for Evolution, Transformation, and Autorealization, a self-report measure designed to assess the propensity for self-realization. The study involved a sample of 634 participants, who completed a survey comprising the META, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Career Adapt-Abilities Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Insight Orientation Scale, and 10-item Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale. The analyses confirmed the statistical solidity of the three hypothesized sections; Part A (Evolutionary Thrust), including Sense of life, Spirit of service, Self-Authorizing, Self-Centering, and Internal Drive for Realization; Part B (Transformative Adaptation), including Propensity for transformation, Distress to change, Adaptability, and Fullness of the Experience; Part C (Work Attitude), including Social Service and Care, Administrative and Office Works, Entrepreneurship, Customer Service and Hospitality, and Manual activities. Factor analyses supported the structural validity of the three hypothesized sections of the META, and all subscales showed good to excellent internal consistency. Significant correlations between the META dimensions/subdimensions and self-realization or well-being outcomes also emerged. The META showed excellent psychometric properties and may be used in various fields, promoting advancements in research and practices supporting well-being and personal fulfilment. Full article

The article aims to identify consumer types based on their attitudes and behaviors toward phygital tools and solutions. The analysis was based on the authors’ empirical research. The research was conducted on a sample of 2160 Polish consumers. The study employed an online survey technique. To determine the types of consumers, a 20-item scale was used, allowing the respondents to express their attitudes toward solutions and tools that improve shopping in the phygital space. The extraction of types was carried out in two steps. The first was cluster analysis, conducted using the hierarchical Ward method with the square of the Euclidean distance, and the second was non-hierarchical cluster analysis using the k-means method. As a result of the analyses, three relatively homogeneous types of consumers were distinguished: phygital integrators, digital frequenters, and physical reality anchors. The behaviours of consumers from each type were examined in the context of their impact on sustainable consumption and the sustainable development of the planet. The proposed typology contributes to developing consumer behavior theory in sustainable consumption environments. It provides practical implications for designing customer experiences that are more inclusive, resource-efficient, and aligned with responsible consumption patterns. Understanding how different consumer groups engage with phygital tools allows businesses and policymakers to tailor strategies that support equitable access to digital services and foster more sustainable, adaptive consumption journeys in an increasingly digitized marketplace. Reinforced concrete deep beams (RCDBs) provide significant strength and serviceability for building structures. However, a simple, general, and universally accepted procedure for predicting their shear strength (SS) has yet to be established. This study proposes a novel data-driven approach to predicting the SS of RCDBs using an enhanced CatBoost (CB) model. For this purpose, a newly comprehensive database of RCDBs with shear failure, including 950 experimental specimens, was established and adopted. The model was developed through a customized procedure including feature selection, data preprocessing, hyperparameter tuning, and model evaluation. The CB model was further evaluated against three data-driven models (e.g., Random Forest, Extra Trees, and AdaBoost) as well as three prominent mechanics-driven models (e.g., ACI 318, CSA A23.3, and EU2). Finally, the SHAP algorithm was employed for interpretation to increase the model’s reliability. The results revealed that the CB model yielded a superior accuracy and outperformed all other models. In addition, the interpretation results showed similar trends between the CB model and mechanics-driven models. The geometric dimensions and concrete properties are the most influential input features on the SS, followed by reinforcement properties. In which the SS can be significantly improved by increasing beam width and concert strength, and by reducing shear span-to-depth ratio. Thus, the proposed interpretable data-driven model has a high potential to be an alternative approach for design practice in structural engineering. Full article

Purpose—This research paper examines the critical factors in customer satisfaction while purchasing fruits and vegetables at farmers’ markets. Design/methodology/approach—This study was conducted using a prepared questionnaire to collect data on a random sample of 235 customers of farmers’ markets in the state of Maharashtra, India. The research was carried out in the year 2023. Seven hypotheses were tested concerning the relationships between the variables of interest. The variables of convenience, variety, quality, price, health and hygiene, and service conditions were used as independent constructs and were proxied by reflective indicators. Customer satisfaction and customer loyalty were treated as an exogenous variable and an endogenous variable, respectively. Structural equation modeling was used to investigate the model relationships and confirm the theoretical model. Findings—The findings validate all the reflective indicators used in the study. The latent variables of convenience, variety, quality, price, health and hygiene, and service conditions positively and significantly affect customer satisfaction, and customer satisfaction positively and significantly affects customer loyalty toward farmers’ markets. The structural equation explains approximately 55% of the variation in customer satisfaction related to convenience, variety, price, quality, health and hygiene, and service conditions. Significance—The study results provide insights into the factors that influence consumer behavior and attitudes toward farmers’ markets. By identifying these predictors, this study can help farmers’ markets and other stakeholders develop effective marketing strategies to attract and retain customers, ultimately promoting sustainable food production and consumption. Additionally, the results can inform policymakers on how to support and promote farmers’ markets as healthy and sustainable food sources. Practical implication—By implementing the practical suggestions derived from the implications of this research, farmers’ markets can optimize customer satisfaction, boost customer loyalty, and reinforce their position as valuable contributors to local communities’ well-being and sustainability. Originality/value—The acceptance of farmers’ markets in India as an alternative shopping destination for fruits and vegetables is gradually increasing. This exploratory study conducted on farmers’ markets examined several factors, including price, in assessing customer satisfaction and farmers’ markets’ effectiveness at positioning themselves as shopping destinations for consumers in India. Recycling plastic waste has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century. One of the biggest challenges in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling is the requirement to return bottles in their original, undeformed state. This necessitates storing large volumes of waste and takes up substantial space. Therefore, this paper seeks to address this issue and introduces a novel AIoT-based infrastructure that integrates the PET Bottle Identification Algorithm (PBIA), which can accurately recognize bottles regardless of color or condition and distinguish them from other waste. A detailed study of Azure Custom Vision services for PET bottle identification is conducted, evaluating its object recognition capabilities and overall performance within an intelligent waste management framework. A key contribution of this work is the development of the Algorithm for Citizens’ Trust Level by Recycling (ACTLR), which assigns trust levels to individuals based on their recycling behavior. This paper also details the development of a cost-effective prototype of the AIoT system, demonstrating its low-cost feasibility for real-world implementation, using the Asus Tinker Board as the primary hardware. The software application is designed to monitor the collection process across multiple recycling points, offering Microsoft Azure cloud-hosted data and insights. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of integrating this prototype on a large scale at minimal cost. Moreover, the algorithm integrates the allocation points for proper recycling and penalizes fraudulent activities. This innovation has the potential to streamline the recycling process, reduce logistical burdens, and significantly improve public participation by making it more convenient to store and return used plastic bottles.
