Urban Carbon Metabolism Optimization Based on a Source–Sink–Flow Framework at the Functional Zone Scale

Carbon flow tracking and spatial pattern optimization at the scale of urban functional zones are key scientific challenges in achieving carbon neutrality. However, due to the complexity of carbon metabolism processes within urban functional zones, related studies remain limited. To address these scientific challenges, this study, based on the “source–sink–flow” ecosystem services framework, develops an integrated analytical approach at the scale of urban functional zones. The carbon balance is quantified using the CASA model in combination with multi-source data. A network model is employed to trace carbon flow pathways, identify critical nodes and interruption points, and optimize the urban spatial pattern through a low-carbon land use structure model. The research results indicate that the overall carbon balance in Hangzhou exhibits a spatial pattern of “deficit in the center and surplus in the periphery.” The main urban area shows a significant carbon deficit and relatively poor connectivity in the carbon flow network. Carbon sequestration services primarily flow from peripheral areas (such as Fuyang and Yuhang) with green spaces and agricultural functional zones toward high-emission residential–commercial and commercial–public functional zones in the central area. However, due to the interruption of multiple carbon flow paths, the overall carbon flow transmission capacity is significantly constrained. Through spatial optimization, some carbon deficit nodes were successfully converted into carbon surplus nodes, and disrupted carbon flow edges were repaired, particularly in the main urban area, where 369 carbon flow edges were restored, resulting in a significant improvement in the overall transmission efficiency of the carbon flow network. The carbon flow visualization and spatial optimization methods proposed in this paper provide a new perspective for urban carbon metabolism analysis and offer theoretical support for low-carbon city planning practices. With the global economic restructuring and the consequent population mobility, urban shrinkage has become a common phenomenon. The Qinling–Daba Mountains, a zone with a key ecological function in China, have long experienced population decline and functional degradation. Clarifying the dynamics and influencing factors of urban shrinkage plays a vital role in supporting the sustainable development of the region. This study, using permanent resident population growth rates and nighttime light data, classified cities in the region into four spatial patterns: expansion–growth, intensive growth, expansion–shrinkage, and intensive shrinkage. It further examined the spatial characteristics of shrinkage across four periods (2005–2010, 2010–2015, 2015–2020, and 2020–2022). A Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) model was applied to examine core influencing factors and their spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The results indicated the following: (1) The dominant pattern of urban shrinkage in the Qinling–Daba Mountains shifted from expansion–growth to expansion–shrinkage, highlighting the paradox of population decline alongside continued spatial expansion. (2) Three critical indicators significantly influenced urban shrinkage: the number of students enrolled in general secondary schools (X5), the per capita disposable income of urban residents (X7), and the number of commercial and residential service facilities (X12), with their effects exhibiting significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Temporally, X12 was the most influential factor in 2005 and 2010, while in 2015, 2020, and 2022, X5 and X7 became the dominant factors. Spatially, X7 significantly affected both eastern and western areas; X5’s influence was most pronounced in the west; and X12 had the greatest impact in the east. This study explored the patterns and underlying drivers of urban shrinkage in underdeveloped areas, aiming to inform sustainable development practices in regions facing comparable challenges. Ecological Restoration Reshapes Ecosystem Service Interactions: A 30-Year Study from China’s Southern Red-Soil Critical Zone

Situated in the southern hilly-mountain belt of China’s “Three Zones and Four Belts Strategy”, Gannan region is a critical ecological shelter belt for the Ganjiang River. Decades of intensive mineral extraction and irrational agricultural development have rendered it into an ecologically fragile area. Consequently, multiple restoration initiatives have been implemented in the region over recent decades. However, it remains unclear how relationships among ecosystem services have evolved under these interventions and how future ecosystem management should be optimized based on these changes. Thus, in this study, we simulated and assessed the spatiotemporal dynamics of five key ESs in Gannan region from 1990 to 2020. Through integrated correlation, clustering, and redundancy analyses, we quantified ES interactions, tracked the evolution of ecosystem service bundles (ESBs), and identified their socio-ecological drivers. Despite a 31% decline in water yield, ecological restoration initiatives drove substantial improvements in key regulating services: carbon storage increased by 6.9 × 1012 gC while soil conservation rose by 4.8 × 108 t. Concurrently, regional habitat quality surged by 45% in mean scores, and food production increased by 2.1 × 105 t. Critically, synergistic relationships between habitat quality, soil retention, and carbon storage were progressively strengthened, whereas trade-offs between food production and habitat quality intensified. Further analysis revealed that four distinct ESBs—the Agricultural Production Bundle (APB), Urban Development Bundle (UDB), Eco-Agriculture Transition Bundle (ETB), and Ecological Protection Bundle (EPB)—were shaped by slope, forest cover ratio, population density, and GDP. Notably, 38% of the ETB transformed into the EPB, with frequent spatial interactions observed between the APB and UDB. These findings underscore that future ecological restoration and conservation efforts should implement coordinated, multi-service management mechanisms. Full article

The remote sensing classification of urban functional zones provides scientific support for urban planning, land resource optimization, and ecological environment protection. However, urban functional zone classification encounters significant challenges in accuracy and efficiency due to complicated image structures, ambiguous critical features, and high computational complexity. To tackle these challenges, this work proposes a novel XT-SECA algorithm employing a strengthened efficient channel attention mechanism (SECA) to integrate the feature-extraction XGBoost branch and the feature-enhancement Transformer feedforward branch. The SECA optimizes the feature-fusion process through dynamic pooling and adaptive convolution kernel strategies, reducing feature confusion between various functional zones. XT-SECA is characterized by sufficient learning of complex image structures, effective representation of significant features, and efficient computational performance. The Futian, Luohu, and Nanshan districts in Shenzhen City are selected to conduct urban functional zone classification by XT-SECA, and they feature administrative management, technological innovation, and commercial finance functions, respectively. XT-SECA can effectively distinguish diverse functional zones such as residential zones and public management and service zones, which are easily confused by current mainstream algorithms. Compared with the commonly adopted algorithms for urban functional zone classification, including Random Forest (RF), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network, and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), XT-SECA demonstrates significant advantages in terms of overall accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and Kappa coefficient, with an accuracy enhancement of 3.78%, 42.86%, and 44.17%, respectively. The Kappa coefficient is increased by 4.53%, 51.28%, and 52.73%, respectively. Full article

This paper reviews the variability of passenger service time (PST) at the platform–train interface (PTI), a critical performance indicator in metro systems shaped by the infrastructure design, affecting passenger behavior and accessibility. Despite its operational importance, PST remains underexplored in relation to crowd management strategies. This review synthesizes findings from empirical and experimental research to clarify the main factors influencing PST and their implications for platform-level interventions. Key contributors to PST variability include door width, gap dimensions, crowd density, and user characteristics such as mobility impairments. Design elements—such as platform edge doors, yellow safety lines, and vertical handrails—affect flow efficiency and spatial dynamics during boarding and alighting. Advanced tracking and simulation tools (e.g., PeTrack and YOLO-based systems) are identified as essential for evaluating pedestrian behavior and supporting Level of Service (LOS) analysis. To complement traditional LOS metrics, the paper introduces Level of Interaction (LOI) and a multidimensional LOS framework that captures spatial conflicts and user interaction zones. Control strategies such as platform signage, seating arrangements, and visual cues are also reviewed, with experimental evidence showing that targeted design interventions can reduce PST by up to 35%. The review highlights a persistent gap between academic knowledge and practical implementation. It calls for greater integration of empirical evidence into policy, infrastructure standards, and operational contracts. Ultimately, it advocates for human-centered, data-informed approaches to PTI planning that enhance efficiency, inclusivity, and resilience in high-demand transit environments. Full article

This study investigates the mechanical behavior of X52 steel pipes and their weld regions under pure hydrogen transport conditions, with a focus on assessing potential hydrogen embrittlement risks. Through experimental analysis, the research evaluates how different pipeline regions—including the base metal, weld metal, and heat-affected zones—respond to varying hydrogen pressures. Key mechanical properties such as elongation, fracture toughness, and crack growth resistance are analyzed to determine their implications for structural integrity and safety. Based on the findings, this study proposes criteria for the safety evaluation of X52 pipelines operating in hydrogen service environments. The results are intended to inform decisions regarding the repurposing of existing pipelines or the design of new infrastructure dedicated to pure hydrogen transport, offering insights into material performance and critical safety considerations for hydrogen pipeline applications. The synergistic development of ecosystems and socioeconomic systems constitutes a critical foundation for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Large river basins characterized by ecological and socioeconomic spatial heterogeneity frequently present contradictions and conflicts in regional sustainable development, thereby impeding the realization of SDGs. This study employed the Yellow River Basin (YRB), a typical large sediment-laden river system, as a case study. Based on the secondary water resource zones, the spatial variability and temporal evolution of ecosystem service value (ESV), population (POP), GDP, nighttime light (NTL), and Human Development Index (HDI) were analyzed at the water resource partition scale. A consistent mode was applied to quantify the spatiotemporal consistency between ESV and socioeconomic indicators across water resource partitions. The results indicated that from 1980 to 2020, the ESV of the YRB increased from 1079.83 × 109 to 1139.20 × 109 yuan, with no notable spatial pattern variation. From upstream to downstream, the population density, GDP per unit area, and NTL per unit area displayed increasing trends along the river course, whereas the total population, GDP, and NTL initially increased and then declined. Temporally, the population fluctuated with an overall upward tendency, while GDP and NTL experienced significant growth. The spatial distribution and temporal evolution of HDI remained comparatively stable. The coefficients of variation for population, GDP, and NTL were significantly higher than those for ecosystem services and HDI. The study highlighted an overall lack of coordination between ESV and socioeconomic development in the YRB, with relatively stable spatial patterns. These findings could offer a theoretical reference for the formulation of policies to enhance the synergistic development of ecosystems and socioeconomic systems in the YRB. Full article

The agroecosystems of tea plantations play a significant role in regional ecosystem services, with some recognized as Important Agricultural Heritage Systems. Despite notable progress in conserving these unique agricultural landscapes, systematic approaches to delineating the core conservation zone and establishing robust ecological networks for agricultural heritage systems remain insufficient. This study employed the Enshi Yulu Tea Agricultural Heritage System as a case study, integrating the MaxEnt model, InVEST model, and circuit theory to quantitatively assess landscape connectivity and prioritize conservation efforts. The analysis delineated a core conservation zone of 718.04 km2 for tea plantations, identified 77 ecological corridors, and pinpointed 104 critical ecological nodes. The results indicate 43.96 km2 of synergistic areas between tea plantations and ecological sources, demonstrating that the agroecosystems of tea plantations provide higher ESs values compared to monoculture plantations and farmlands. In addition, an ecological optimization framework featuring a “four belts and four zones” spatial configuration was proposed, aimed at enhancing connectivity and promoting the sustainable development of tea plantation agricultural heritage. The proposed framework can provide evidence-based references for future policy formulation, and deliver actionable insights for land-use planning, habitat restoration, and infrastructure mitigation. National parks serve as critical spatial units for conserving ecological baselines, maintaining genetic diversity, and delivering essential ecosystem services. However, accelerating socio-economic development has increasingly intensified the conflict between ecological protection and transportation infrastructure. Ecologically sustainable transportation planning is, therefore, essential to mitigate habitat fragmentation, facilitate species migration, and conserve biodiversity. This study examines the Giant Panda National Park and its buffer zone, focusing on six mammal species: giant panda, Sichuan snub-nosed monkey, leopard cat, forest musk deer, rock squirrel, and Sichuan takin. By integrating Maxent ecological niche modeling with circuit theory, it identified ecological source areas and potential corridors, and employed a two-step screening approach to design species-specific wildlife crossings. In total, 39 vegetated overpasses were proposed to serve all target species; 34 underpasses were integrated using existing bridge and culvert structures to minimize construction costs; and 27 canopy bridges, incorporating suspension cables and elevated pathways, were designed to connect forest canopies for arboreal species. This study established a multi-species and multi-scale conservation framework, providing both theoretical insights and practical strategies for ecologically integrated transportation planning in national parks, contributing to the synergy between biodiversity conservation and sustainable development goals. Water-lubricated bearings (WLB), due to their pollution-free nature and low noise, are increasingly becoming critical components in aerospace, marine applications, high-speed railway transportation, precision machine tools, etc. However, in practice, water-lubricated bearings suffer severe friction and wear due to low-viscosity water, harsh conditions, and contaminants like sediment, which can compromise the lubricating film and shorten their lifespan. The implementation of micro-textures has been demonstrated to improve the tribological performance of water-lubricated bearings to a certain extent, leading to their widespread adoption for enhancing the frictional dynamics of sliding bearings. The shape, dimensions (including length, width, and depth), and distribution of these micro-textures have a significant influence on the frictional performance. Therefore, this study aims to explore the coupling effect of different micro-texture shapes and distributions on the frictional performance of water-lubricated sliding, using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The results indicate that strategically arranging textures across multiple regions can enhance the performance of the bearing. Specifically, placing linear groove textures in the outlet of the divergent zone and triangular textures in the divergent zone body maximize improvements in the load-carrying capacity and frictional performance. This specific configuration increases the load-carrying capacity by 7.3% and reduces the friction coefficient by 8.6%. Overall, this study provided critical theoretical and technical insights for the optimization of WLB, contributing to the advancement of clean energy technologies and the extension of critical bearing service life. Ecological security patterns (ESPs) are fundamental to safeguarding regional ecological integrity and enhancing human well-being. Consequently, research on conservation and restoration in critical regions is vital for ensuring ecological security and optimizing territorial ecological spatial configurations. Focusing on the Henan section of the Yellow River Basin, this study established the regional ESP and conservation–restoration framework through an integrated approach: (1) assessing four key ecosystem services—soil conservation, water retention, carbon sequestration, and habitat quality; (2) identifying ecological sources based on ecosystem service importance classification; (3) calculating a comprehensive resistance surface using the entropy weight method, incorporating key factors (land cover type, NDVI, topographic relief, and slope); (4) delineating ecological corridors and nodes using Linkage Mapper and the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) theory; and (5) integrating ecological functional zoning to synthesize the final spatial conservation and restoration strategy. Key findings reveal: (1) 20 ecological sources, totaling 8947 km2 (20.9% of the study area), and 43 ecological corridors, spanning 778.24 km, were delineated within the basin. Nineteen ecological barriers (predominantly located in farmland, bare land, construction land, and low-coverage grassland) and twenty-one ecological pinch points (primarily clustered in forestland, grassland, water bodies, and wetlands) were identified. Collectively, these elements form the Henan section’s Ecological Security Pattern (ESP), integrating source areas, a corridor network, and key regional nodes for ecological conservation and restoration. (2) Building upon the ESP and the ecological baseline, and informed by ecological functional zoning, we identified a spatial framework for conservation and restoration characterized by “one axis, two cores, and multiple zones”. Tailored conservation and restoration strategies were subsequently proposed. This study provides critical data support for reconciling ecological security and economic development in the Henan Yellow River Basin, offering a scientific foundation and practical guidance for regional territorial spatial ecological restoration planning and implementation. Rapid urbanization and climate extremes expose cities to multi-dimensional risks, necessitating the coordinated development of new urbanization and urban resilience for achieving urban sustainability. While existing studies focus on core economic zones like the Yangtze River Delta, secondary economic cooperation regions remain understudied. This study examined the Huaihai Economic Zone (HEZ)—a quadri-provincial border area—by constructing the evaluation systems for new urbanization and urban resilience. The development indices of the two systems were measured using the entropy weight-CRITIC method. The spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of their coupling coordination degree (CCD) were analyzed through a CCD model, while key driving factors influencing the CCD were investigated using a grey relational analysis model. The results indicated that both the new urbanization construction and urban resilience development indices in the HEZ exhibited a steady upward trend during the study period, with the urban resilience development index surpassing the new urbanization construction index. The new urbanization index increased from 0.3026 (2013) to 0.4702 (2023), and the urban resilience index increased from 0.3520 (2013) to 0.6366 (2023). The CCD between new urbanization and urban resilience reached 0.7368 by 2023, with 80% of cities in the HEZ achieving good coordination types. The variation of the CCD among cities was minimal, revealing a spatially clustered coordinated development pattern. In terms of driving factors, economic development level, public service capacity, and municipal resilience level were identified as core drivers for enhancing coupling coordination. Infrastructure construction, digital capabilities, and spatial intensification served as important supports, while ecological governance capacity remained a weakness. This study establishes a transferable framework for the coordinated development of secondary economic cooperation region, though future research should integrate diverse data sources and expand indicator coverage for higher precision. Moreover, the use of linear models to analyze the key driving factors of the CCD has limitations. The incorporation of non-linear techniques can better elucidate the complex interactions among factors. Full article

Amid global efforts to balance sustainable development and food security, ecosystem service value (ESV), a critical bridge between natural systems and human well-being, has gained increasing importance. This study explores the spatiotemporal dynamics and driving factors of land use changes and ESV from a food security perspective, aiming to inform synergies between ecological protection and food production for regional sustainability. Using Guangdong Province as a case study, we analyze ESV patterns and spatial correlations from 2005 to 2023 based on three-phase land use and socioeconomic datasets. Key findings: I. Forestland and cropland dominate Guangdong’s land use, which is marked by the expansion of construction land and the shrinking of agricultural and forest areas. II. Overall ESV declined slightly: northern ecological zones remained stable, while eastern/western regions saw mild decreases, with cropland loss threatening grain self-sufficiency. III. Irrigation scale, forestry output, and fertilizer use exhibited strong interactive effects on ESV, whereas urban hierarchy influenced ESV independently. IV. ESV showed significant positive spatial autocorrelation, with stable agglomeration patterns across the province. The research provides policy insights for optimizing cropland protection and enhancing coordination between food production spaces and ecosystem services, while offering theoretical support for land use regulation and agricultural resilience in addressing regional food security challenges. Habitat quality functions as a critical metric for evaluating regional ecological health and the capacity of ecosystem services. Understanding its temporal dynamics is critical for advancing ecological civilization sustainability. Focusing on the Tacheng region, this study analyzes the evolution characteristics of land use based on long-term sequential land use data from 2003 to 2023. By coupling the PLUS and InVEST models, it predicts land use change trends under three distinct scenarios for the year 2033 and assesses the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of habitat quality in the Tacheng region from 2003 to 2033. Findings reveal: (1) The land use types in the Tacheng region are dominated by grassland and unutilized land. During 2003–2023, the area of grassland and water showed a decreasing trend, while the areas of cultivated land and unutilized land significantly increased. Among them, NDVI was identified as the primary driver influencing the expansion of cultivated land, grassland, and unutilized land in the Tacheng region, addressing the gap in quantitative contribution analysis of specific drivers in arid region studies. (2) Overall, habitat quality in the Tacheng region significantly deteriorated during 2003–2023, with areas of high habitat quality continuously decreasing and transitioning to medium and relatively low habitat quality zones. This degradation is primarily attributed to the unidirectional conversion of grassland and water into cultivated land and unutilized land. (3) Under different scenario simulations, land use and habitat quality in the Tacheng region exhibit marked differences, with habitat quality showing significant improvement, particularly under the ecological protection scenario. Compared to existing research, this study pioneers the coupling of PLUS and InVEST models in the typical arid region of the Tacheng region, implements localization of model parameters, quantifies future evolution trends of land use and habitat quality under multiple scenarios, and reveals core drivers of land use change in arid regions. This work addresses the research gap regarding habitat quality simulation and driving mechanisms in the Central Asian arid-semiarid transition zone. Full article

As critical zones for ecological conservation, national parks necessitate integrated management of transportation corridors (TCs) and ecosystem service value (ESV) to advance ecological civilisation. This study investigates the TC-ESV mutual construction mechanism in the Giant Panda National Park (GPNP). This research employs the TOPSIS method to measure the development level of TCs, applies the equivalent factor method to calculate the ESV, and uses a coupling coordination model and local spatial autocorrelation analysis to evaluate their interaction patterns. The results show that TC development in the GPNP has been increasing, accompanied by a significant rise in ESV. A coupling coordination relationship exists between TCs and ESV, with notable spatial differentiation. TCs not only increase the market ESV by reducing distribution costs and facilitating the outward flow of ESV, they also improve the accessibility of national parks, promote ecotourism and cultural services, facilitate the movement of people and the exchange of knowledge, and enhance the ability of local populations and migrants to realise the ESV in the long term. However, challenges persist, including ESV conversion difficulties and TC construction’s potential impacts on ESV realisation. Therefore, we propose optimised green transport corridors and differentiated ecological compensation mechanisms, and by analysing the interaction between them, the innovation of this paper is to provide an innovative framework for sustainable spatial governance of ESV conversion and TC development in national parks, enriching the interdisciplinary approach.
