The utilisation of agrifood waste ashes has the potential to enhance the nutrient content of cereal crops, thereby optimising both yield and grain quality. This study investigated rye grain composition, the fermentation efficiency, and volatile compounds in mashes made from crops fertilised with agrifood waste ashes derived from the combustion of corn cob, wood chips, and biomass with defecation lime. The ashes were applied at 2, 4, and 8 t/ha, separately and as mixtures of corn cob (25%) with wood chips (75%) and corn cob (50%) with biomass and defecation lime (50%). Rye mashes were prepared using the pressureless starch liberation method. The starch content in the majority of the rye grains was comparable to the control sample (57.12 g/100 g). The range of ethanol concentrations observed in the fermented mashes was from 55.55 to 68.12 g/L, which corresponded to fermentation yields of 67.25–76.59% of theoretical. The lowest fermentation yield was exhibited by the mash derived from rye cultivated on soil fertilised with a 50:50 mixture of ashes from corn cob and biomass with defecation lime at 8 t/ha. This mash contained more than double the acetaldehyde concentration and total aldehyde content compared to the other samples. These findings demonstrate the potential of using waste biomass ash as a source of macro- and microelements for rye cultivation, enabling the production of agricultural distillates. To ensure high fermentation efficiency and low aldehyde levels, ash dosage and composition need to be established based on experimental optimisation. Full article

In response to increasingly stringent emission regulations, low-carbon fuels have received significant attention as sustainable energy sources for internal combustion engines. This study investigates four representative low-carbon fuels, methane, methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia, by systematically summarizing their combustion characteristics and emission profiles, along with a review of existing after-treatment technologies tailored to each fuel type. For methane engines, unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) produced during low-temperature combustion exhibits poor oxidation reactivity, necessitating integration of oxidation strategies such as diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), particulate oxidation catalyst (POC), ozone-assisted oxidation, and zoned catalyst coatings to improve purification efficiency. Methanol combustion under low-temperature conditions tends to produce formaldehyde and other UHCs. Due to the lack of dedicated after-treatment systems, pollutant control currently relies on general-purpose catalysts such as three-way catalyst (TWC), DOC, and POC. Although hydrogen combustion is carbon-free, its high combustion temperature often leads to elevated nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, requiring a combination of optimized hydrogen supply strategies and selective catalytic reduction (SCR)-based denitrification systems. Similarly, while ammonia offers carbon-free combustion and benefits from easier storage and transportation, its practical application is hindered by several challenges, including low ignitability, high toxicity, and notable NOx emissions compared to conventional fuels. Current exhaust treatment for ammonia-fueled engines primarily depends on SCR, selective catalytic reduction-coated diesel particulate filter (SDPF). Emerging NOx purification technologies, such as integrated NOx reduction via hydrogen or ammonia fuel utilization, still face challenges of stability and narrow effective temperatures. Full article

Boda boda motorbike taxis are a primary mode of transport in Nairobi, Kenya, and a major source of urban air pollution. This study investigates the environmental and electrical grid impacts of electrifying Nairobi’s boda boda fleet. Using real-world tracking data from 118 motorbikes, we simulated the effects of a full-scale transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric motorbikes. We analysed various scenarios, including different battery charging strategies (swapping and home charging), motor efficiencies, battery capacities, charging rates, and the potential for solar power offsetting. The results indicate that electrification could reduce daily CO2 emissions by approximately 85% and eliminate tailpipe particulate matter emissions. However, transitioning the entire country’s fleet would increase the national daily energy demand by up to 6.85 GWh and could introduce peak grid loads as high as 2.40 GW, depending on the charging approach and vehicle efficiency. Battery swapping was found to distribute the grid load more evenly and better complement solar power integration compared to home charging, which concentrates demand in the evening. This research provides a scalable, data-driven framework for policymakers to assess the impacts of transport electrification in similar urban contexts, highlighting the critical trade-offs between environmental benefits and grid infrastructure requirements. Biochar is an amendment that can enhance both soil fertility and sequester carbon. However, its historical applications continue to be underexplored. In this overview, we investigate the formiguer method of burning woody biomass to create agricultural biochar for use as fertilizer in Catalonia, Spain, within the context of historical biochar use. A literature review targeted searches of scholarly databases to compare the formiguer method to Amazonian terra preta and other traditional biochar use. We identified sources covering biochar properties, soil impacts, and historical agricultural practices within the Iberian Peninsula and briefly described the main methods or treatments used during this process. Past research demonstrates that the formiguer method, which involves pyrolytic combustion of biomass within soil mounds, improves microbial activity, increases soil phosphorus and potassium availability from soil structure, and leads to long-term carbon stabilization, even though it can result in short-term decreases in soil organic carbon and nitrogen losses. Despite being abandoned in Europe with the rise of chemical fertilizers, the use of formiguers exemplifies a decentralized approach to nutrient and agroecosystem management. The literature highlights the relevance that these traditional biochar practices can have in informing modern soil management and sustainable agricultural strategies. Understanding the formiguer can offer critical insights to optimize contemporary biochar applications and historical techniques into future sustainability frameworks. Full article

This study presents a novel approach to address these challenges by introducing automobile platinum honeycomb catalysts into biomass combustion systems. The study employed a dual methodology, combining experimental investigations and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) case study, to comprehensively evaluate the catalyst’s performance and environmental impacts. The catalyst’s ability to facilitate combustion without open flame formation and its operational efficiency throughout combustion phases position it as a promising avenue for reducing gaseous and particulate matter emissions. The LCA considers multiple impact categories, employing the ReCiPe 2008 Hierarchist midpoint and endpoint perspective to assess environmental effects. The experimental results show that the catalyst effectively reduced CO, SO2, and particulate emissions. Temperatures below 400 °C diminished the catalyst’s performance. The catalyst achieved a 100% CO conversion rate at specific temperatures of 427.4–490.3 °C. The findings highlight the potential for a 34% reduction in environmental impacts when replacing conventional rice husk combustion with the catalyst-integrated system. Notably, the study emphasizes the significance of sustainable catalyst manufacturing processes and cleaner electricity sources in maximizing environmental benefits. In conclusion, the integration of platinum honeycomb catalysts into biomass combustion systems, exemplified by rice husk combustion, emerges as a promising strategy for achieving more sustainable and environmentally friendly bioenergy production. Vehicle emissions, as a source of air pollution and greenhouse gases, have a significant impact on the environment and climate change. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have the potential to reduce air pollution and GHGs. However, BEVs often attract the criticism that their benefits are minimal as the power plant emissions compensate for emissions from the tailpipes of vehicles. This study compared two scenarios: scenario A considers all vehicles as internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), and scenario B considers all vehicles as BEVs. The study used the City of San Antonio, Texas, as the study area. The study also focused on the seasonal and spatial variation in ICEV emissions. The results indicate that scenario A has a considerably higher volume of emissions than scenario B. For ICEVs, PM2.5 emissions were up to 50% higher in rural areas than urban areas, but 45% lower for unrestricted versus restricted conditions. CO2 emissions were highly affected by seasonal variations, with a 51% decrease from winter to summer. The full adoption of BEVs could reduce CO2 and N2O emissions by 99% and 58% per km, especially for natural gas power resources. Therefore, BEVs play a significant role in reducing emissions from the transportation sector. Full article

As an efficient and low-carbon renewable energy source, hydrogen plays a strategic role in the global energy transition, particularly in the transportation sector. However, the flammable and explosive nature of hydrogen makes leakage risks in enclosed environments a core challenge for the safe promotion of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Catalytic combustion sensors are ideal choices due to their high sensitivity and long lifespan. Nevertheless, they face technical bottlenecks under vehicle operational conditions, such as high-power consumption caused by elevated working temperatures, slow response rates, weak anti-interference capabilities, and catalyst poisoning. This paper systematically reviews the research status of catalytic combustion hydrogen sensors for vehicle applications, summarizes technical difficulties and development strategies from the perspectives of hydrogen-sensitive material design and integration processes, and provides theoretical references and technical guidance for the development of catalytic combustion hydrogen sensors suitable for vehicle use. To compensate for the instability of renewable energy sources during China’s energy transition, large thermal power plants must provide critical operational flexibility, primarily through deep peaking. To investigate the combustion performance and wear and tear of a 600 MW pulverized coal boiler under deep peaking, the gas–solid flow characteristics and distributions of flue gas temperature, wall heat flux, and wall wear rate in a 600 MW tangentially fired pulverized coal boiler under variable loads (353 MW, 431 MW, 519 MW, and 600 MW) are investigated in this study employing computational fluid dynamics numerical simulation method. Results demonstrate that increasing the boiler load significantly amplifies gas velocity, wall heat flux, and wall wear rate. The maximum gas velocity in the furnace rises from 20.9 m·s−1 (353 MW) to 37.6 m·s−1 (600 MW), with tangential airflow forming a low-velocity central zone and high-velocity peripheral regions. Meanwhile, the tangential circle diameter expands by ~15% as the load increases. The flue gas temperature distribution exhibits a “low-high-low” profile along the furnace height. As the load increases from 353 MW to 600 MW, the primary combustion zone’s peak temperature rises from 1750 K to 1980 K, accompanied by a ~30% expansion in the coverage area of the high-temperature zone. Wall heat flux correlates strongly with temperature distribution, peaking at 2.29 × 105 W·m−2 (353 MW) and 2.75 × 105 W·m−2 (600 MW) in the primary combustion zone. Wear analysis highlights severe erosion in the economizer due to elevated flue gas velocities, with wall wear rates escalating from 3.29 × 10−7 kg·m−2·s−1 (353 MW) to 1.23 × 10−5 kg·m−2·s−1 (600 MW), representing a 40-fold increase under full-load conditions. Mitigation strategies, including ash removal optimization, anti-wear covers, and thermal spray coatings, are proposed to enhance operational safety. This work provides critical insights into flow field optimization and wear management for large-scale coal-fired boilers under flexible load operation. Full article

This study aims to provide a reference for the fire protection design and fire emergency response strategies for fuel islands in high-speed railway stations and other transportation buildings. By using an industrial calorimeter, this paper analyzes the combustion characteristics of a fuel island. For the fuel island setup in this test, the fuel island fire development cycle was relatively long, and the maximum fire source heat release rate reached 4615 kW. Before the fire source heat release rate reaches the maximum peak, the HRR curve slowly fluctuates and grows within the first 260 s after ignition. Within the time range of 260 s to 440 s, the fire growth rate resembled that of a t2 medium-speed fire, and within the time range of 400 s to 619 s, it more closely aligned with a t2 fast fire. It is generally suggested that the growth curve of t2 fast fire could be used for the numerical simulation of fuel island fires. The 1 h fire separation method adopted in this paper demonstrated a good fire barrier effect throughout the combustion process. Full article

Carbon capture technologies are largely considered to play a crucial role in meeting the climate change and global warming target set by Net Zero Emission (NZE) 2050. These technologies can contribute to clean energy transitions and emissions reduction by decarbonizing the power sector and other CO2 intensive industries such as iron and steel production, natural gas processing oil refining and cement production where there is no obvious alternative to carbon capture technologies. While the progress of carbon capture technologies has fallen behind expectations in the past, in recent years there has been substantial growth in this area, with over 700 projects at various stages of development. Moreover, there are around 45 commercial carbon capture facilities already in operation around the world in different industrial processes, fuel transformation and power generation. Carbon capture technologies including pre/post-combustion, oxyfuel and chemical looping combustion have been widely exploited in the recent years at different Technology Readiness level (TRL). Although, a large number of review studies are available addressing different carbon capture strategies, however, studies related to the commercial status of the carbon capture technologies are yet to be conducted. In this review article, we summarize the state-of-the-art of different carbon capture technologies applied to different emission sources, focusing on emission reduction, net-zero emission, and negative emission. We also highlight the commercial status of the different carbon capture technologies including economics, opportunities, and challenges. Full article

Since around the year 2000, following the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) to the market, some people have expressed concerns about the level of magnetic flux density (MFD) inside vehicles. In 2013, we reported the results of MFD measurements for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). However, those 2013 measurements were conducted using a chassis dynamometer, and no measurements were taken during actual driving. In recent years, with the rapid global spread of EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the international standard IEC 62764-1:2022, which defines methods for measuring magnetic fields (MF) in vehicles, has been issued. In response, and for the first time, we conducted new MF measurements on current Japanese vehicle models in accordance with the international standard IEC 62764-1:2022, identifying the MFD levels and their sources at various positions within EVs, PHEVs, and ICEVs. The measured MFD values in all vehicle types were below the reference levels recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) for public exposure. Furthermore, we performed comparative measurements with the MF data obtained in 2013 and confirmed that the MF levels remained similar. These findings are expected to provide valuable insights for risk communication with the public regarding electromagnetic fields, particularly for those concerned about MF exposure inside electrified vehicles. Real-Time Source Dynamics of PM2.5 During Winter Haze Episodes Resolved by SPAMS: A Case Study in Yinchuan, Northwest China

The occurrence of haze pollution significantly deteriorates air quality and threatens human health, yet persistent knowledge gaps in real-time source apportionment of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) hinder sustained improvements in atmospheric pollution conditions. Thus, this study employed single-particle aerosol mass spectrometry (SPAMS) to investigate PM2.5 sources and dynamics during winter haze episodes in Yinchuan, Northwest China. Results showed that the average PM2.5 concentration was 57 μg·m−3, peaking at 218 μg·m−3. PM2.5 was dominated by organic carbon (OC, 17.3%), mixed carbonaceous particles (ECOC, 17.0%), and elemental carbon (EC, 14.3%). The primary sources were coal combustion (26.4%), fugitive dust (25.8%), and vehicle emissions (19.1%). Residential coal burning dominated coal emissions (80.9%), highlighting inefficient decentralized heating. Source contributions showed distinct diurnal patterns: coal combustion peaked nocturnally (29.3% at 09:00) due to heating and inversions, fugitive dust rose at night (28.6% at 19:00) from construction and low winds, and vehicle emissions aligned with traffic (17.5% at 07:00). Haze episodes were driven by synergistic increases in local coal (+4.0%), dust (+2.7%), and vehicle (+2.1%) emissions, compounded by regional transport (10.1–36.7%) of aged particles from northwestern zones. Fugitive dust correlated with sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) (p < 0.01), suggesting roles as carriers and reactive interfaces. Findings confirm local emission dominance with spatiotemporal heterogeneity and regional transport influence. SPAMS effectively resolved short-term pollution dynamics, providing critical insights for targeted air quality management in arid regions. Full article

The spontaneous combustion disaster of coal not only causes a waste of resources but also affects the safe production of coal mines. In order to accurately detect the range and location of the spontaneous combustion source of coal, this paper studies and summarizes previous research results, and based on the principles and research and development progress of existing detection technologies such as the surface temperature measurement method, ground temperature measurement method, wellbore temperature measurement method, and infrared remote sensing detection method, it briefly reviews the application of various detection technologies in engineering practice at this stage and briefly explains the advantages and disadvantages of each application. Research shows that the existing technologies are generally limited by the interference of complex environmental conditions (such as temperature measurement deviations caused by atmospheric turbulence and the influence of rock layer structure on ground temperature conduction) and the implementation difficulties of geophysical methods in mining applications (such as the interference of stray currents in the ground by electromagnetic methods and the fast attenuation speed of waves detected by geological radar methods), resulting in the insufficient accuracy of fire source location and difficulties in identifying concealed fire sources. In response to the above bottlenecks, the ”air–ground integrated” fire source location determination technology that breaks through environmental constraints and the location determination method of a CSC fire source based on a multi-physics coupling mechanism are proposed. By significantly weakening the deficiency in obtaining parameters through a single detection method, a new direction is provided for the detection of coal spontaneous combustion fire sources in the future. Ambient PM concentrations are influenced by various emission sources and weather conditions such as temperature, wind speed, and direction. Measurements using optical sensors cannot directly link pollution levels to specific sources. Data from roadside monitoring often show that a significant portion of PM originates from non-traffic sources. Therefore, vehicle-related PM emissions are typically estimated using simulation models based on average emission factors. This study uses the COPERT (Computer Programme to Calculate Emissions from Road Transport) model to estimate emissions from road vehicles under current conditions and future scenarios. These include the introduction of Euro 7 standards and a shift from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The analysis considers exhaust and non-exhaust emissions, as well as indirect emissions from electricity generation for BEV charging. The conducted study showed, among other findings, that replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with electric ones could reduce PM2.5 emissions by approximately 6% (2% when including indirect emissions from electricity generation) and PM10 emissions by about 10% (5% with indirect emissions), compared to the Euro 7 scenario.
