A brick kiln was experimentally studied to measure the transient temperature of hot gases and the compressive strength of the bricks, using pine wood as fuel, in order to evaluate the thermal performance of the actual system. In addition, a transient combustion model based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate the combustion of natural gas in the brick kiln as a hypothetical case, with the aim of investigating the potential benefits of fuel switching. The theoretical stoichiometric combustion of both pine wood and natural gas was employed to compare the mole fractions and the adiabatic flame temperature. Also, the transient hot gas temperature obtained from the experimental wood-fired kiln were compared with those from the simulated natural gas-fired kiln. Furthermore, numerical simulations were carried out to obtain the transient hot gas temperature and NOx emissions under stoichiometric, fuel-rich, and excess air conditions. The results of CO2 mole fractions from stoichiometric combustion demonstrate that natural gas may represent a cleaner alternative for use in brick kilns, due to a 44.08% reduction in emissions. Contour plots of transient hot gases temperature, velocity, and CO2 emission inside the kiln are presented. Moreover, the time-dependent emissions of CO2, H2O, and CO at the kiln outlet are shown. It can be concluded that the presence of CO mole fractions at the kiln outlet suggests that the transient combustion process could be further improved. The low firing efficiency of bricks and the thermal efficiency obtained are attributed to uneven temperatures distributions inside the kiln. Moreover, hot gas temperature and NOx emissions were found to be higher under stoichiometric conditions than under fuel-rich or excess of air conditions. Therefore, this work could be useful for improving the thermal–hydraulic and emissions performance of brick kilns, as well as for future kiln design improvements. Full article

This study presents a novel approach to address these challenges by introducing automobile platinum honeycomb catalysts into biomass combustion systems. The study employed a dual methodology, combining experimental investigations and a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) case study, to comprehensively evaluate the catalyst’s performance and environmental impacts. The catalyst’s ability to facilitate combustion without open flame formation and its operational efficiency throughout combustion phases position it as a promising avenue for reducing gaseous and particulate matter emissions. The LCA considers multiple impact categories, employing the ReCiPe 2008 Hierarchist midpoint and endpoint perspective to assess environmental effects. The experimental results show that the catalyst effectively reduced CO, SO2, and particulate emissions. Temperatures below 400 °C diminished the catalyst’s performance. The catalyst achieved a 100% CO conversion rate at specific temperatures of 427.4–490.3 °C. The findings highlight the potential for a 34% reduction in environmental impacts when replacing conventional rice husk combustion with the catalyst-integrated system. Notably, the study emphasizes the significance of sustainable catalyst manufacturing processes and cleaner electricity sources in maximizing environmental benefits. In conclusion, the integration of platinum honeycomb catalysts into biomass combustion systems, exemplified by rice husk combustion, emerges as a promising strategy for achieving more sustainable and environmentally friendly bioenergy production. Hydrogen is a promising zero-carbon fuel for internal combustion engines; however, the geometric optimization of injectors for low-pressure direct-injection (LPDI) systems under lean-burn conditions remains underexplored. This study presents a high-fidelity optimization framework that couples a validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model with a surrogate-assisted multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). The CFD model was validated using particle image velocimetry (PIV) data from non-reacting flow experiments conducted in an optically accessible research engine developed by Sandia National Laboratories, ensuring accurate prediction of in-cylinder flow structures. The optimization focused on two critical geometric parameters: injector hole count and injection angle. Partial indicated mean effective pressure (pIMEP) and in-cylinder NOx emissions were selected as conflicting objectives to balance performance and emissions. Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) was employed to resolve transient in-cylinder flow and combustion dynamics with high spatial accuracy. Among 22 evaluated configurations including both capped and uncapped designs, the injector featuring three holes at a 15.24° injection angle outperformed the baseline, delivering improved mixture uniformity, reduced knock tendency, and lower NOx emissions. These results demonstrate the potential of geometry-based optimization for advancing hydrogen-fueled LPDI engines toward cleaner and more efficient combustion strategies. Full article

The generation of fine coal particles during mining and processing presents significant environmental and logistical challenges, particularly in coal-dependent, developing countries like South Africa (SA). This review critically evaluates the technical viability of fine coal briquetting as a sustainable waste-to-energy solution within a SA context, while drawing from global best practices and comparative benchmarks. It examines abundant feedstocks that can be used for valorization strategies, including fine coal and agricultural biomass residues. Furthermore, binder types, manufacturing parameters, and quality optimization strategies that influence briquette performance are assessed. The co-densification of fine coal with biomass offers a means to enhance combustion efficiency, reduce dust emissions, and convert low-value waste into a high-calorific, manageable fuel. Attention is also given to briquette testing standards (i.e., South African Bureau of Standards, ASTM International, and International Organization of Standardization) and end-use applications across domestic, industrial, and off-grid settings. Moreover, the review explores socio-economic implications, including rural job creation, energy poverty alleviation, and the potential role of briquetting in SA’s ‘Just Energy Transition’ (JET). This paper uniquely integrates technical analysis with policy relevance, rural energy needs, and practical challenges specific to South Africa, while offering a structured framework for bio-coal briquetting adoption in developing countries. While technical and economic barriers remain, such as binder costs and feedstock variability, the integration of briquetting into circular economy frameworks represents a promising path toward cleaner, decentralized energy and coal waste valorization. The combustion of fossil fuels is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, drives climate change, and has intensified the search for cleaner energy alternatives such as biomass. Biomass derived from renewable organic materials, is considered a sustainable and carbon-neutral energy source. While biomass represents a renewable and clean energy source, its combustion, especially in pellet form, can produce various pollutants such as CO2, SO2, NO2, CO, and PM. This study focuses on analyzing the combustion of six different pellet brands and the emissions they produce. A dedicated experimental procedure was designed and implemented to evaluate the combustion performance. The temperature shows a gradual increase in ambient temperature around 2.5 °C across all tests, with a similar behavior, the temperature of flue gas shows a similar behavior between tests with temperatures peaking around 300 °C and 340 °C. In the tests conducted, all pellets complied with the legal emission limits defined by legislation. The efficiency calculated using the direct method was lower by around 55%, primarily due to the use of an older boiler (manufactured in 2004) and short duration of the test. The indirect method shows better efficiency, around 70%, influenced by lower moisture content of the pellets. The results indicate that B pellets had a superior performance compared to the others evaluated. Full article

Hydrogen–gasoline dual-fuel spark ignition (SI) engines represent a promising transitional solution toward cleaner combustion and reduced carbon emissions. In a previous study, a predictive engine model was developed to simulate the performance and combustion characteristics of such systems; however, its accuracy was constrained by the use of estimated combustion parameters. This study presents an experimental validation based on high-resolution in-cylinder pressure measurements performed on a naturally aspirated SI engine operating with a 20% hydrogen energy share. The objectives are twofold: (1) to refine the combustion model using empirically derived combustion metrics, and (2) to evaluate the feasibility of moderate hydrogen enrichment in a stock engine configuration. To facilitate a more accurate understanding of how key combustion parameters evolve under different operating conditions, Vibe function was fitted to the ensemble-averaged heat release rate curves computed from 100 consecutive engine cycles at each static full-load operating point. This approach enabled the extraction of stable and representative metrics, including the mass fraction burned at 50% (MFB50) and combustion duration, which were then used to recalibrate the predictive combustion model. In addition, cycle-to-cycle variation and combustion duration were also investigated in the dual-fuel mode. The combustion duration exhibited a consistent and substantial reduction across all of the examined operating points when compared to pure gasoline operation. Furthermore, the cycle-to-cycle variation difference remained statistically insignificant, indicating that the introduction of 20% hydrogen did not adversely affect combustion stability. In addition to improving model accuracy, this work investigates the occurrence of abnormal combustion phenomena—including backfiring, auto-ignition, and knock—under enriched conditions. The results confirm that 20% hydrogen blends can be safely utilized in standard engine architectures, yielding faster combustion and reduced burn durations. The validated model offers a reliable foundation for further dual-fuel optimization and supports the broader integration of hydrogen into conventional internal combustion platforms. Full article

Challenges associated with the homogeneous charge combustion ignition (HCCI) concept include combustion phasing control and a narrow operating window. To address the HCCI engine developmental needs, chemical kinetic solvers have been recently included in the commercial engine simulation toolchains like GT-Suite v2024 upward. This study investigates the feasibility of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen (H2) as dual fuels in homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines, leveraging chemical kinetics modeling via GT-Suite software v2024. A validated baseline model was adapted with NH3/H2 injectors and simulated across varying blending ratios (BR), compression ratios (CR), air–fuel equivalence ratios (ER), and engine speeds. Results reveal that adding 10% H2 to NH3 significantly improves ignition. Optimal performance was observed at a CR of 20 and a lean mixture, achieving higher indicated thermal efficiency (about 40%), while keeping the intrinsic advantages of zero-carbon fuel. However, NOx emissions increased with higher ER due to elevated combustion temperatures. The study emphasizes the trade-offs between efficiency and NOx emissions under tested conditions. Finally, despite the single-zone model limitations in neglecting thermal stratification, this study shows that kinetic modeling has great potential for effectively predicting trends in HCCI, thereby demonstrating the promise of NH3/H2 blends in HCCI engines for cleaner and efficient combustion, paving the way for advanced dual-fuel combustion concepts. This paper explores cleaner and techno-economically viable solutions to provide electricity, heat, and cooling using green hydrogen (H2) and green ammonia (NH3) across the entire decarbonized value chain. We propose integrating a 100% hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine (e.g., Jenbacher JMS 420) as a stationary backup solution and comparing its performance with other backup technologies. While electrochemical storage systems, or battery energy storage systems (BESSs), offer fast and reliable short-term energy buffering, they lack flexibility in relocation and typically involve higher costs for extended backup durations. Through five case studies, we highlight that renewable-based energy supply requires additional capacity to bridge longer periods of undersupply. Our results indicate that, for cost reasons, battery–electric solutions alone are not economically feasible for long-term backup. Instead, a more effective system combines both battery and hydrogen storage, where batteries address daily fluctuations and hydrogen engines handle seasonal surpluses. Despite lower overall efficiency, gas engines offer favorable investment and operating costs in backup applications with low annual operating hours. Furthermore, the inherent fuel flexibility of combustion engines eventually will allow green ammonia-based backup systems, particularly as advancements in small-scale thermal cracking become commercially available. Future studies will address CO2 credit recognition, carbon taxes, and regulatory constraints in developing more effective dispatch and master-planning solutions. Full article

The aviation sector significantly contributes to environmental challenges, including global warming and greenhouse gas emissions, due to its reliance on fossil fuels. Fuel cells present a viable alternative to conventional propulsion systems. In the context of light aircraft applications, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have recently attracted growing interest as a substitute for internal combustion engines (ICEs). However, their performance is highly sensitive to altitude variations, primarily due to limitations in compressor efficiency and instability in cathode pressure. To address these challenges, this research presents a comprehensive numerical model that couples a PEMFC system with a dynamic air compressor model under altitude-dependent conditions ranging from 0 to 3000 m. Iso-efficiency lines were integrated into the compressor map to evaluate its behavior across varying environmental parameters. The study examines key fuel cell stack characteristics, including voltage, current, and net power output. The results indicate that, as altitude increases, ambient pressure and air density decrease, causing the compressor to work harder to maintain the required compression ratio at the cathode of the fuel cell module. This research provides a detailed prediction of compressor efficiency trends by implementing iso-efficiency lines into the compressor map, contributing to sustainable aviation and aligning with global goals for low-emission energy systems by supporting cleaner propulsion technologies for lightweight aircraft. The combustion of gaseous fuels in condensing boilers contributes to the greenhouse gas and toxic compound emissions in exhaust gases. Hydrogen, as a clean energy carrier, could play a key role in decarbonizing the residential heating sector. However, its significantly different combustion behavior compared to hydrocarbon fuels requires thorough investigation prior to implementation in heating systems. This study presents experimental and theoretical analyses of the co-combustion of natural gas with hydrogen in low-power-output condensing boilers (second and third generation), with hydrogen content of up to 50% by volume. The results show that mixtures of hydrogen and natural gas contribute to increasing heat transfer in boilers through convection and flue gas radiation. They also highlight the benefits of using the heat from the condensation of vapors in the flue gases. Other studies have observed an increase in efficiency of up to 1.6 percentage points compared to natural gas at 50% hydrogen content. Up to a 6% increase in the amount of energy recovered by water vapor condensation was also recorded, while exhaust gas losses did not change significantly. Notably, the addition of hydrogen resulted in a substantial decrease in the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO). At 50% hydrogen content, NOx emissions decreased several-fold to 2.7 mg/m3, while CO emissions were reduced by a factor of six, reaching 9.9 mg/m3. All measured NOx values remained well below the current regulatory limit for condensing gas boilers, which is 33.5 mg/m3. These results highlight the potential of hydrogen blending as a transitional solution on the path toward cleaner residential heating systems. Full article

The harmful environmental impacts of fossil fuel combustion, particularly greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, have driven global interest in developing sustainable biodiesel alternatives. Pakistan imports 294.46 million tons of high-speed diesel (HSD) annually, costing approximately USD 140.237 million. A 10% biodiesel blend could save 29.446 million tons of HSD and USD 14.023 million annually. Fish waste, a significant byproduct of Pakistan’s fishing industry, offers a promising feedstock for biodiesel production. This study explores its conversion into biodiesel and evaluates performance in diesel engines, supporting sustainability and circular economy goals. This study produced fish waste biodiesel through two-step transesterification reactions, achieving a 68% conversion yield. The biodiesel exhibited properties within ASTM D6751 standards, with a calorific value of 40.47 MJ/kg and a cetane number of 55.92. Engine performance and emission tests on LOMBARDINI 15LD225 diesel engines showed significant CO emission reductions with B10 and B20 blends compared to conventional diesel. Simulation using Ricardo Wave software 2019.1 demonstrated a 90% model accuracy for predicting CO emissions. The findings highlight the viability of fish waste-derived biodiesel as a cleaner, renewable alternative to fossil diesel, supporting sustainability and circular economy goals. Full article

This study investigates the effects of varying hydrogen percentages in fuel blends on combustion dynamics, engine performance, and emissions. Experimental data and analytical equations were used to evaluate combustion parameters such as equivalent lambda, in-cylinder pressure, heat release rate, and ignition timing. The findings demonstrate that hydrogen blending enhances combustion stability, shortens ignition delay, and shifts peak heat release to be closer to the top dead center (TDC). These changes improve thermal efficiency and reduce cycle-to-cycle variation. Hydrogen blending also significantly lowers carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, particularly at higher blend levels (H0–H5), while lower blends increase nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions and risk pre-ignition due to advanced start of combustion (SOC). Engine performance improved with an average hydrogen energy contribution of 12% under a constant load. However, the optimal hydrogen blending range is crucial to balancing efficiency gains and emission reductions. These results underline the potential of hydrogen as a cleaner additive fuel and the importance of optimizing blend ratios to harness its benefits effectively. Full article

This study investigates the environmental and operational performance of X-DF and ME-GI propulsion systems in large LNG carriers, focusing on key emission and transport efficiency metrics—CO2, the EEOI, and the CII—and their relationship with operational factors such as shaft power, vessel speed, propeller slip, and specific fuel oil consumption. Statistical methods including correlation analysis, regression modeling, outlier detection, and clustering are employed to evaluate engine behavior across the ship’s fuel gas steaming envelope and to identify critical efficiency trends. The results show that ME-GI engines deliver lower CO2 emissions and consistent efficiency under steady-load conditions, due to their higher thermal efficiency and precise control characteristics. In contrast, X-DF engines demonstrate greater adaptability, leveraging LNG combustion to achieve cleaner emissions and optimal performance in specific operational clusters. Clustering analysis highlights distinct patterns: ME-GI engines excel with optimized shaft power and RPM, while X-DF engines achieve peak efficiency through adaptive load and fuel management. These findings provide actionable insights for integrating performance indicators into SEEMP strategies, enabling targeted emission reductions and fuel optimization across diverse operating scenarios—thus supporting more sustainable maritime transport. The deposition and dispersion of particulate matter from diesel combustion in confined spaces pose significant challenges to air quality and public health, with important implications for sustainable development goals. While previous studies have focused on particle behavior inside diesel engines, the external environmental effects remain poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the mass concentrations and deposition characteristics of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 particles in a 1 m3 environmental chamber under both sealed and ventilated conditions. The experimental results demonstrated that natural deposition ratios reached 50–75% after 8 h across all particle sizes. A comparative evaluation of ventilation strategies showed lateral ventilation achieved superior particle reduction ratios of 36%, outperforming direct ventilation at 14–22% and non-ventilated conditions at 23%. The study revealed that ventilation-induced convective removal was more effective than gravitational settling alone, providing important technical insights for air quality management in enclosed environments. These findings offer valuable scientific guidance for optimizing ventilation systems while contributing to the development of sustainable solutions for particulate pollution control. The research advances our understanding of particle behavior in confined spaces and supports technological innovations for cleaner air in urban infrastructure. Full article
