Harbor seals, equipped with their uniquely structured whiskers, demonstrate remarkable proficiency in tracking the trajectories of prey within dark and turbid marine environments. This study experimentally investigates the wake-induced vibrations of an elastically supported whisker model placed in the wakes of circular, square, and equilateral triangular cylinders of varying dimensions. Thereafter, a machine learning model is trained to identify and classify these intrinsic responses. The findings reveal a positive correlation between the amplitude of vibration and the total circulation shed by the bluff bodies. In the wake flow fields of triangular and circular cylinders, the mean drag is quite similar. Meanwhile, the whisker’s vibration amplitude and drag fluctuation show that the triangular cylinder is comparable to the square cylinder, and both are higher than the circular cylinder. To classify the wake-generating body shapes based on the hydrodynamic characteristics, hydrodynamic features encompassing vibration amplitudes, fluid forces, and frequency-related information were extracted to train an LSTM-based model, and it was found that the mean drag significantly enhances the model’s flow velocity generalization performance. To investigate the movement law of top coal and the influencing factors of coal caving ratio in fully mechanized top coal caving faces, this study adopts the theory of dispersoid mechanics. First, a top coal flow model was established without considering the influence of the support. Then, the effect of the support was analyzed, and it was found that the sliding resistance of the top coal body increases with the square of both the support width and the top coal thickness. Furthermore, the positive stress on the coal particles was derived through a microelement force analysis, and a theoretical formula for arching probability was proposed. The mobility of top coal was evaluated using a flow factor, and the influence of lump size on arching tendency was quantitatively analyzed. Based on these insights, several measures to improve top coal flowability and recovery rate were proposed, including increasing mining height, enlarging the coal caving opening, enhancing the initial support force, extending the caving step, and applying multiple alternating loads to pre-break top coal. These strategies provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for enhancing top coal caving efficiency. Full article

Controlling legged robots to run at high speeds or to traverse complex terrains remains challenging due to the difficulty of handling the interaction between the robot and the ground. Impedance control and model predictive control are widely used to account for ground reaction forces (GRFs) during dynamic locomotion. This paper introduces a model predictive impedance control (MPIC) method that combines the advantages of both strategies and applies it to a quadruped robot. The proposed approach reformulates MPIC within the single rigid body model (SRBM) framework and derives linear inequality constraints for the equivalent wrench, allowing explicit consideration of GRF limits while retaining compliant behavior against ground impacts and external disturbances. Furthermore, a novel optimized gait pattern based on a simplified dynamic model is introduced to minimize the effect of GRFs on the robot. The resulting gait improves stability compared to conventional gait patterns while maintaining a similar level of energy efficiency. The proposed method is validated through various simulations under diverse conditions. The results demonstrate that it enables the quadruped robot to run at a speed of 12 m/s while maintaining stability against repeated lateral disturbances. Full article

Solvent-exchange-induced in situ forming gel (ISG) refers to a drug delivery system that transforms from a solution state into a gel or solid matrix upon administration into the body and exposure to physiological aqueous fluid. This study investigates the molecular behavior and phase inversion process of cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB)-based in situ forming gel (ISG) formulations containing moxifloxacin (Mx) or benzydamine HCl (Bz) as model drugs dissolved in N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The simulations reveal a solvent exchange mechanism, where the diffusion of water molecules replaces NMP, driving the formation of the CAB matrix. Bz exhibited faster diffusion and a more uniform distribution compared to Mx, which aggregated into clusters due to its larger molecular size. The analysis of the root mean square deviation (RMSD) and radius of gyration confirmed the faster diffusion of Bz, which adopted a more extended conformation, while Mx remained compact. The phase transformation was driven by the disruption of CAB-NMP hydrogen bonds, while CAB–water interactions remained limited, suggesting that CAB does not dissolve in water, facilitating matrix formation. The molecular configuration revealed that drug–CAB interactions were primarily governed by hydrophobic forces and van der Waals interactions rather than hydrogen bonding, controlling the release mechanism of both compounds. DFT calculations and electrostatic potential (ESP) maps illustrated that the acetyl group of CAB played a key role in drug–polymer interactions and that differences in CAB substitution degrees influenced the stability of drug-CAB complexes. Formation energy calculations indicated that Mx-CAB complexes were more stable than Bz-CAB complexes, resulting in a more prolonged release of Mx compared to Bz. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the molecular behavior of CAB-based Mx-, Bz-ISG formulations. Full article

Most existing assembly accuracy analysis methods focus on rigid assemblies or assume assemblies to be rigid bodies, neglecting the influence of assembly deformation in weak rigid components (WRCs) such as thin-walled structures, cantilever structures, etc. As a result, the assembly accuracy analysis becomes inaccurate, and the accuracy of key components cannot be effectively controlled. This may lead to serious issues such as forced assembly, repair, and rework. To address these problems, this study proposes a rigid–flexible coupling-based assembly accuracy analysis method for WRCs. The stiffness matrix and assembly deformation of WRCs are calculated, and by coupling assembly deformation with other assembly deviations, a rigid–flexible coupling assembly accuracy data model is established. This model incorporates multiple deviation sources, including assembly process variations, design tolerances, and assembly deformations. Assembly deviation transfer modeling and accumulation calculation methods for WRCs are investigated, enabling assembly accuracy simulation and statistical analysis. A case study on WRC assembly accuracy analysis is conducted, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method improves the accuracy of assembly analysis for WRCs, verifying its reliability. This study applies a deep neural network (DNN) to optimize the 22.5 m pontoon hull form of a small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH) vessel with fin stabilizers, aiming to reduce calm water resistance at a Froude number of 0.8 under even keel conditions. The vessel’s resistance is simplified into three components: pontoon, strut, and fin stabilizer. Four design parameters define the pontoon geometry: fore-body length, aft-body length, fore-body angle, and aft-body angle. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using STAR-CCM+ 2302 provide 1400 resistance data points, including fin stabilizer lift and drag forces at varying angles of attack. These are used to train a DNN in MATLAB 2018a with five hidden layers containing six, eight, nine, eight, and seven neurons. K-fold cross-validation ensures model stability and aids in identifying optimal design parameters. The optimized hull has a 7.8 m fore-body, 6.8 m aft-body, 10° fore-body angle, and 35° aft-body angle. It achieves a 2.2% resistance reduction compared to the baseline. The improvement is mainly due to a reduced Munk moment, which lowers the angle of attack needed by the fin stabilizer, thereby reducing drag. The optimized design provides cost-efficient construction and enhanced payload capacity. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of combining CFD and deep learning for hull form optimization. To enable the practical application of passive back-support exoskeletons employing pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) in tasks such as agricultural work, we evaluated their assistive effectiveness in a half-squatting posture with a staggered stance. In this context, assistive force profiles were adjusted according to body posture to achieve more effective support. The targeted assistive force profile was designed to be continuously active from the standing to the half-squatting position, with minimal variation across this range. The assistive force profile was developed based on a PAM contractile force model and implemented using a cam mechanism. The effectiveness of assistance was assessed by measuring body flexion angles and erector spinae muscle activity during lifting and carrying tasks. The results showed that the assistive effect was greater on the side with the forward leg. Compared to the condition without exoskeleton assistance, the conventional pulley-based system reduced muscle activity by approximately 20% whereas the cam-based system achieved a reduction of approximately 30%. In recent years, the concept of the myofascial network has transformed biomechanical understanding by emphasizing the body as an integrated, multidirectional system. This study advances that paradigm by applying graph theory to model the osteo-myofascial system as an anatomical network, enabling the identification of topologically central nodes involved in force transmission, stability, and coordination. Using the aNETomy model and the BIOMECH 3.4 database, we constructed an undirected network of 2208 anatomical nodes and 7377 biomechanical relationships. Centrality analysis (degree, betweenness, and closeness) revealed that structures such as the sacrum and thoracolumbar fascia exhibit high connectivity and strategic importance within the network. These findings, while derived from a theoretical modeling approach, suggest that such key nodes may inform targeted treatment strategies, particularly in complex or compensatory musculoskeletal conditions. The proposed concept of a polyconnective skeleton (PCS) synthesizes the most influential anatomical hubs into a functional core of the system. This framework may support future clinical and technological applications, including integration with imaging modalities, real-time monitoring, and predictive modeling for personalized and preventive medicine. Predicting Proximal Femoral Remodeling After Short-Stem Hip Arthroplasty: A Biomechanical Modeling Approach

Background: Short-stem hip replacements are designed to provide improved load distribution and to mimic natural biomechanics. The interplay between implant design, positioning, and resulting bone biomechanics in individual patients remains underexplored, and the relationship between radiographically assessed bone remodeling around short stems and biomechanical predictions has not been previously reported. Methods: This study evaluated three short-stem hip implant designs: Proxima, Collo-MIS, and Minima. Postoperative bone remodeling patterns were analyzed, categorizing remodeling as bone gain, bone loss, or no observable activity, with changes tracked over time. Patient-specific biomechanical models were generated from 6-week postoperative radiographs. Finite element simulations incorporated body weight and gluteal muscle forces to estimate stress and strain distributions within the proximal femur. Strain energy was then applied to a mechanostat-based remodeling algorithm to predict bone remodeling patterns. These biomechanical predictions were compared to observed radiographic remodeling at 2 years post-surgery. A validated biomechanical model was further used to simulate different postoperative positions of the three types of stems. Results: No differences in bone remodeling patterns were observed among the three short-stem designs. Computational modeling demonstrated a statistically significant correlation between predicted remodeling and radiographic measurements at 2 years (p < 0.001). Proxima stems showed a tendency towards increased cortical bone loading under pronounced varus or valgus position in comparison to other two stems, although this observation requires further validation. Conclusions: This exploratory study demonstrates the feasibility of using biomechanical modeling to estimate bone remodeling around short-stem hip implants based on early postoperative radiographs. While the results are promising, they should be interpreted with caution due to the limited cohort size. The proposed modeling approach may offer clinical value in evaluating implant behavior and informing patient-specific treatment strategies. However, further research with larger populations is necessary to refine and validate these predictive tools. Full article

Simulation is an important technical tool in corn threshing operations, and the establishment of the corn kernel model is the core part of the simulation process. The existing modeling method is to treat the whole kernel as a rigid body, which cannot be crushed during the simulation process, and the calculation of the crushing rate needs to be considered through multiple criteria such as the contact force, the number of collisions, and so on. Aiming at the issue that kernel crushing during maize threshing cannot be accurately modeled in discrete element simulations, in this study, a sub-area crushing model was constructed; representative samples with 26%, 30% and 34% moisture content were selected from a double-season maturing region in China; based on the physical dimensions and biological structure of the maize kernel, three stress regions were defined; and mechanical property tests were conducted on each of the three stress regions using a texturometer as a way to determine the different crushing forces due to the heterogeneity of the maize structure. The correctness of the model was verified by stacking angle and mechanical property experiments. A discrete element model of corn kernels was established using the Bonding V2 method and sub-area modeling. Bonding parameters were calculated by combining stacking angle tests and mechanical property tests. The flattened corn kernel was used as a prototype, and the bonding parameters were determined through size and mechanical property tests. A 22-ball bonding model was developed using dimensional parameters, and the kernel density was recalculated. Results showed that the relative error between the stacking angle test and the measured mean value was 0.31%. The maximum deviation of axial compression simulation results from the measured mean value was 22.8 N, and the minimum deviation was 3.67 N. The errors between simulated and actual rupture forces at the three force areas were 5%, 10%, and 0.6%, respectively. The decreasing trend of the maximum rupture force for the three moisture levels in the simulation matched that of the actual rupture force. The discrete element model can accurately reflect the rupture force, energy relationship, and rupture process on both sides, top, and bottom of the grain, and it can solve the error problem caused by the contact between the threshing element and the grain line in the actual threshing process to achieve the design optimization of the threshing drum. The modeling method provided in this study can also be applied to breakable discrete element models for wheat and soybean, and it provides a reference for optimizing the design of subsequent threshing devices. Exoskeletons transfer loads to the human body via physical human–exoskeleton interfaces (pHEI). However, the human–exoskeleton interaction remains poorly understood, and the mechanical properties of the pHEI are not well characterized. Therefore, we present a novel methodology to precisely characterize pHEI interaction stiffnesses under various loading conditions. Forces and torques were applied in three orthogonal axes to the upper arm pHEI of 21 subjects using an electromechanical apparatus. Interaction loads and displacements were measured, and stiffness data were derived as well as mathematically described using linear and non-linear regression models, yielding all the diagonal elements of the stiffness tensor. We find that the non-linear nature of pHEI stiffness is best described using exponential functions, though we also provide linear approximations for simplified modeling. We identify statistically significant differences between loading conditions and report median translational stiffnesses between 2.1 N/mm along and 4.5 N/mm perpendicular to the arm axis, as well as rotational stiffnesses of 0.2 N·m/° perpendicular to the arm, while rotations around the longitudinal axis are almost an order of magnitude smaller (0.03 N·m/°). The resulting stiffness models are suitable for use in digital human–exoskeleton models, potentially leading to more accurate estimations of biomechanical efficacy and discomfort of exoskeletons. During the process of flexible aerial refueling, the flexible structure of the hose drogue assembly is affected by internal and external interference, such as docking maneuvering, deformation of the hose, attitude changes, and body vibrations, causing the hose to swing and the whipping phenomenon, which greatly limits the success rate and safety of aerial refueling operations. Based on a 2.4 m transonic wind tunnel, high-speed wind tunnel test technology of a flexible aerial refueling hose–drogue system was established to carry out experimental research on the coupling characteristics of aerodynamics and multi-body dynamics. Based on the aid of Videogrammetry Model Deformation (VMD), high-speed photography, dynamic balance, and other wind tunnel test technologies, the dynamic characteristics of the hose–drogue system in a high-speed airflow and during the approach of the receiver are obtained. Adopting flexible multi-body dynamics, a dynamic system of the tanker, hose, drogue, and receiver is modeled. The cable/beam model is based on an arbitrary Lagrange–Euler method, and the absolute node coordinate method is used to describe the deformation, movement, and length variation in the hose during both winding and unwinding. The aerodynamic forces of the tanker, receiver, hose, and drogue are modeled, reflecting the coupling influence of movement of the tanker and receiver, the deformation of the hose and drogue, and the aerodynamic forces on each other. The tests show that during the approach of the receiver (distance from 1000 mm to 20 mm), the sinking amount of the drogue increases by 31 mm; due to the offset of the receiver probe, the drogue moves sideways from the symmetric plane of the receiver. Meanwhile, the oscillation magnitude of the drogue increases (from 33 to 48 and from 48 to 80 in spanwise and longitudinal directions, respectively). The simulation results show that the shear force induced by the oscillation of the hose and the propagation velocity of both the longitudinal and shear waves are affected by the hose stiffness and Mach number. The results presented in this work can be of great reference to further increase the safety of aerial refueling. Full article

Analysis of the Impact of Frog Wear on the Wheel–Rail Dynamic Performance in Turnout Zones of Urban Rail Transit Lines

To investigate how severe wear at No. 12 turnout frogs in an urban rail transit line operating at speeds over 120 km/h on the dynamic performance of the vehicle, a vehicle–frog coupled dynamic model was established by employing the 2021 version of SIMPACK software. Profiles of No. 12 alloy steel frogs and metro wheel rims were measured to simulate wheel–rail interactions as the vehicle traverses the turnout, using both brand-new and worn frog conditions. The experimental results indicate that increased service life deepens frog wear, raises equivalent conicity, and intensifies wheel–rail forces. When a vehicle passes through the frog serviced for over 17 months at the speed of 120 km/h, the maximum derailment coefficient, lateral acceleration of the car body, and lateral and vertical wheel–rail forces increased by 0.14, 0.17 m/s2, 9.52 kN, and 105.76 kN, respectively. The maximum contact patch area grew by 35.73%, while peak contact pressure rose by 236 MPa. To prevent dynamic indicators from exceeding safety thresholds and ensure train operational safety, it is recommended that the frog maintenance cycle be limited to 12 to 16 months. Full article

Relating Anthropometric Profile to Countermovement Jump Performance and External Match Load in Mexican National Team Soccer Players: An Exploratory Study

Background/Objectives: The role of body composition in sports performance has been widely studied, particularly in soccer. Understanding how anthropometric characteristics impact movement efficiency and neuromuscular performance is crucial for optimizing player performance. This study examined the relationship between body composition and locomotor performance in elite soccer players. Methods: Thirty-six male soccer players from the Mexican National Team participated in the study, where body composition was assessed using surface anthropometry. Players underwent tests to measure countermovement jump (CMJ) performance, sprinting speed, maximum acceleration, and distance covered during two games of the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals. Correlation matrices were created to identify the most significant associations, followed by generalized linear models (GLMs) to associate body composition variables with performance metrics. Results: Anthropometric profile tables were created by playing position. Higher body fat percentage (%BF) was associated with lower performance. Specifically, higher %BF was associated with slower sprint speed (B = −0.74 m/s, p < 0.001) and shorter distance covered (B = −4.86 m/min, p < 0.001). Conversely, greater muscularity, reflected by corrected girth values for the thigh and calf, was associated with improved CMJ performance. Thigh corrected girth was positively associated with concentric mean force (B = 48.85 N, p < 0.001), and calf corrected girth was positively associated with peak power (B = 240.50 W, p < 0.001). These findings underscore the importance of low body fat and high lean mass for efficient movement. Conclusions: The results highlight the critical role of body composition in enhancing soccer performance, particularly for explosive movements like jumps, sprints, and accelerations. This study suggests that monitoring and optimizing body composition should be a central focus of nutrition, training, and conditioning strategies, adapted to the specific positional demands of professional soccer. Conventional cast-in-place counterfort retaining walls, while widely used to support the fill body in geotechnical engineering cases, suffer from extended construction cycles and environmental impacts that constrain their usage more widely. In this study, in order to overcome these limitations, the performance of two types of innovative prefabricated counterfort retaining wall system—a monolithic design and a modular design—was investigated through physical modeling. The results reveal that failure mechanisms are fundamentally governed by the distribution of stress at the connection interfaces. The monolithic system, with fewer connections, concentrates stress and is more vulnerable to cracking at the primary joints. In contrast, the modular system disperses loads across numerous connections, reducing localized stress. Critically, this analysis identified a construction-dependent failure mode: incomplete contact between the foundation and the base slab induces severe bending moments that can lead to catastrophic failure. Furthermore, this study shows that complex stress states due to backfill failure can induce detrimental tensile forces on the wall structure. To address this, a composite soil material–wall structure system incorporating geogrid reinforcement was developed. This system significantly enhances the backfill’s bearing capacity and mitigates adverse loading. Based on the comprehensive analysis of settlement and structural performance, the optimal configuration involves concentrating geogrid layers in the upper third of section of the backfill, with sparser distribution below.
