Aramid fibre has become a critical material for individual soft body armour due to its lightweight nature and exceptional impact resistance. To investigate its energy absorption mechanism, quasi-static and dynamic tensile experiments were conducted on Kevlar® 29 plain-woven fabric using a universal material testing machine and a Split Hopkinson Tensile Bar (SHTB) apparatus. Tensile mechanical responses were obtained under various strain rates. Fracture morphology was characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ultra-depth three-dimensional microscopy, followed by an analysis of microstructural damage patterns. Considering the strain rate effect, a viscoelastic constitutive model was developed. The results indicate that the tensile mechanical properties of Kevlar® 29 plain-woven fabric are strain-rate dependent. Tensile strength, elastic modulus, and toughness increase with strain rate, whereas fracture strain decreases. Under quasi-static loading, the fracture surface exhibits plastic flow, with slight axial splitting and tapered fibre ends, indicating ductile failure. In contrast, dynamic loading leads to pronounced axial splitting with reduced split depth, simultaneous rupture of fibre skin and core layers, and fibrillation phenomena, suggesting brittle fracture characteristics. The modified three-element viscoelastic constitutive model effectively captures the strain-rate effect and accurately describes the tensile behaviour of the plain-woven fabric across different strain rates. These findings provide valuable data support for research on ballistic mechanisms and the performance optimisation of protective materials. Full article

A slanted axial-flow pump is extensively applied in coastal pumping stations; however, severe bias flow within the outlet passage will result in unstable operation and low efficiency of the slanted axial flow pump system. In order to mitigate bias flow in a slanted axial-flow pump outlet passage, seven exit setting angle schemes of the guide vanes were designed. The influence mechanisms of the guide vane exit setting angle on internal flow characteristics, hydraulic loss, flow deviation coefficient, vortex evolution patterns, and pump system efficiency were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that under design flow conditions, as the exit setting angle of the guide vane ranges from 90° to 105°, the flow field in the first half of the guide vane remains essentially the same. The low-velocity region at the guide vane outlet demonstrates initial contraction followed by gradual expansion with increasing stagger angles. Looking downstream within the flow passage from the left to the right, the hydraulic loss in the outlet passage goes up after an initial descending trend as the exit setting angle increases. When the exit setting angle is 97.5°, the bias coefficient of the outlet passage is 1.031. At this point, the vortex core distribution intensity within the outlet passage reaches a minimum, corresponding to the lowest recorded hydraulic loss of 0.230 m. Compared with the original guide vane scheme, the scheme with an angle set at 97.5° can improve the pump system efficiency of the slanted axial flow pump system, whether the flow is set at a design point or at a large point, and the pump system efficiency is increased by 2.3% under design flow conditions. In this study, we demonstrated that lrp6a, a co-receptor in the Wnt signaling pathway, is essential for proper median fin formation and somitogenesis in goldfish. We analyzed the gene’s sequence features and expression patterns in both wen-type and egg-type goldfish, uncovering distinct tissue-specific expression differences between the two varieties. To explore the functional role of lrp6a, we performed CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene knockout using eight designed single-guide RNAs (sgRNAs), of which four showed effective targeting. Three high-efficiency sgRNAs were selected and co-injected into embryos to achieve complete gene disruption. Morphological assessments and X-ray microtomography (μCT) imaging of the resulting mutants revealed various abnormalities, including defects in the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins, as well as skeletal deformities near the caudal peduncle. These results confirm that lrp6a plays a key role in median fin development and axial patterning, offering new insights into the genetic regulation of fin formation in teleost fish. Full article

This study examines methods to improve the energy efficiency of radiofrequency inductively coupled plasma (RF-ICP) torches for radioactive waste treatment, with a focus on surpassing the typical energy efficiency limit of approximately 70%. To improve energy efficiency and plasma performance, this research investigates the transition from axial gas flow to vortex gas flow patterns using COMSOL Multiphysics software v6.2. Key plasma parameters, including energy efficiency, number of gas vortices, heat transfer, and temperature distribution, were analyzed to evaluate the improvements. The results indicate that adopting a vortex flow pattern increases energy conversion efficiency, increases heat flux, and reduces charge losses. Furthermore, optimizing the torch body design, particularly the nozzle, chamber volume, and gas entry angle, significantly improves plasma properties and energy efficiency by up to 90%. Improvements to RF-ICP torches positively impact waste decomposition by creating better thermal conditions that support resource recovery and potential material recycling. In addition, these improvements contribute to reducing secondary waste, mitigating environmental risks, and fostering long-term public support for nuclear technology, thereby promoting a more sustainable approach to waste management. Simulation results demonstrate the potential of RF-ICP flares as a cost-effective and sustainable solution for the thermal treatment of low- to intermediate-level radioactive waste. Full article

The hydraulic turbine serves as the cornerstone of hydropower generation systems, with the sealing system’s performance critically influencing energy conversion efficiency and operational cost-effectiveness. The sealing ring is a pivotal component, which mitigates leakage and energy loss by regulating flow within the narrow gap between itself and the frame. This study investigates the intricate flow dynamics within the gap between the sealing ring and the upper frame of a super-large-scale Francis turbine, with a specific focus on the rotating wall’s impact on the flow field. Employing theoretical modeling and three-dimensional transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations grounded in real turbine design parameters, the research reveals that the rotating wall significantly alters shear flow and vortex formation within the gap. Tangential velocity exhibits a nonlinear profile, accompanied by heightened turbulence intensity near the wall. The short flow channel height markedly shapes flow evolution, driving the axial velocity profile away from a conventional parabolic pattern. Further analysis of rotation-induced vortices and flow instabilities, supported by turbulence kinetic energy monitoring and spectral analysis, reveals the periodic nature of vortex shedding and pressure fluctuations. These findings elucidate the internal flow mechanisms of the sealing ring, offering a theoretical framework for analyzing flow in microscale gaps. Moreover, the resulting flow field data establishes a robust foundation for future studies on upper crown gap flow stability and sealing ring dynamics. Full article

This paper presents an enhanced circularly polarized (CP) all-textile antenna using a metasurface (MS) and slot-patterned ground (SPG) for 5.8 GHz industry, scientific, and medical (ISM)-band applications in off-body communications. The 3 × 3 MS, capable of converting the incident wave into an orthogonal direction with equal magnitude and a 90° phase difference, converts the linearly polarized (LP) wave, radiated from the fundamental radiator with a corner-truncated slot square-patch configuration, into being CP. The SPG, consisting of periodic slots with two different sizes of corner-truncated slots, redistributes the surface current on the ground plane, enhancing the axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of the proposed antenna. The novel combination of MS and SPG not only enables the generation and enhancement of CP characteristics but also significantly improves the impedance bandwidth (IBW), gain, and radiation efficiency by introducing additional surface wave resonances. The proposed antenna is composed of a conductive textile and a felt substrate, offering comfort and flexibility for applications where the antenna is placed in close proximity to the human body. The proposed antenna is simulated under bending in various directions, showing exceptionally similar characteristics to a flat condition. The proposed antenna is fabricated and is then verified by measurements in both free space and a human body environment. The measured IBW is 36.3%, while the ARBW is 18%. The measured gain and radiation efficiency are 6.39 dBic and 64.7%, respectively. The specific absorption rate (SAR) is simulated, and the results satisfy both US and EU safety standards. Background/objectives: Despite advancements in early diagnosis and clinical practices guided by standardized care protocols, Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is marked by an unfavorable prognosis with a 5-year relative survival rate of 65%, based primarily on data collected prior to the introduction of immunotherapy. Regional nodal metastases affect 40–50% of MCC patients, while approximately 33% experience distant dissemination. Among these, bone and bone marrow metastases are particularly notable, although the characteristics and clinical implications of this metastatic disease in MCC remain poorly understood. Methods: A comprehensive review was conducted using the Medline database (via PubMed) up to January 2025. The search strategy included the string “(Merkel cell carcinoma AND (bone OR marrow))”. Results: A total of 1133 (69.3% male and 30.7% female) patients diagnosed with advanced MCC were collected. The median (IQR) age at diagnosis was 67.5 (12.65) years old. Overall, 201 (20.8%) cases of bone and/or bone marrow metastases were identified and linked to a primary known MCC in 75.7% of cases. Bone metastases (BMs) appear as the third most common metastatic site, following the liver (second) and lymph nodes (first). They show mixed biological and radiological behavior, with a marked preference for the axial skeleton over the appendicular one. Addressing the characteristics of metastatic bone disease, neurological symptoms were the most documented, whereas bone marrow involvement and leukemic spread seemed to be primarily related to immunosuppression. Multimodal treatment strategies, including platinum-based chemotherapy and radiotherapy, were the primary approaches adopted, reflecting therapeutic practices from the pre-immunotherapy era. Conclusions: The pattern of metastatic spread in MCC differs among studies, with the bones resulting as the third most common site of distant spread. Excluding head and neck MCC, which seems to be more regularly associated with liver metastases, the relationship between the primary tumor site and the development of bone or bone marrow metastases appears inconsistent. Overall, BMs mostly correlated with advanced MCC stages and poorer survival outcomes, with a median overall survival (OS) of 8 months (range 12.75–4). The integration of international guidelines, evolving evidence from clinical trials, and the expanding role of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) will contribute to improving systemic disease control and enhance patient care. The mechanisms of in-service damage caused to the cylinder units of internal combustion engines (ICE) during their operation are analyzed. Long-term operation under harsh conditions, failure to comply with operating conditions, and breach of design and technology standards were found to be the major reasons for the initiation and propagation of in-service defects. The life of ICE cylinder liners is proposed to be extended by forming regular microreliefs. This represents a promising surface engineering strategy. Axial lines of the regular microrelief’s grooves were considered using analytical dependencies, which helped determine their coordinates and those of their equidistant. The authors simulated the pattern according to which the groove axes of type II regular microrelief could be aligned on the inner surface of the cylinder liner. To this end, a tool with three deforming elements was used. Technical means have been developed to implement this technology on the working surfaces of the liner–piston group’s mating parts. The effects of heavy traffic and complex natural environmental conditions have made the problem of the inadequate life expectancy of asphalt pavements increasingly pronounced. In this study, finite-element software was used to establish the three-dimensional analytical model of temperature-load coupling under different axial loads and calculate the distribution law of temperature-load coupling stress under the most unfavorable loading conditions. By comparing temperature and coupled stresses at different depths, the extent to which combined stress changes due to environmental factors affect different depths was determined. Finally, the fatigue life patterns of asphalt pavements under different seasons and axle loads were analyzed. The results showed that the temperature-load coupling stress varied periodically under different axial loads. Among them, the temperature stress had less influence on the coupling stress in spring and fall and more influence in winter. As the depth increases, the coupling stresses and their range of influence gradually decrease. Also, the farther away from the wheel load position, the smaller the traveling load disturbance and the closer the coupling stresses were to the temperature stresses. Under the most unfavorable loading conditions, the change rule of the degree of influence of environmental effects along the depth direction showed that the winter gradually decreased, the spring and fall seasons for the first time decreased and then increased, and the minimum influence on the road surface was at 9 cm. Overall, the degree of influence of environmental action at different axial loads was 70.53%, 41.90%, 27.13%, and 23.77% along the depth direction. Full article

The mechanism of low- to middle-rank coal seam gas accumulation in the Baode block on the eastern edge of the Ordos Basin is well understood. However, exploration efforts in the Shizuishan area on the western edge started later, and the current understanding of enrichment and accumulation rules is unclear. It is important to systematically study enrichment and accumulation, which guide the precise exploration and development of coal seam gas resources in the western wing of the basin. The coal seam collected from the Shizuishan area of Ningxia was taken as the target. Based on drilling, logging, seismic, and CBM (coalbed methane) test data, geological conditions were studied, and factors and reservoir formation modes of CBM enrichment were summarized. The results are as follows. The principal coal-bearing seams in the study area are coal seams No. 2 and No. 3 of the Shanxi Formation and No. 5 and No. 6 of the Taiyuan Formation, with thicknesses exceeding 10 m in the southwest and generally stable thickness across the region, providing favorable conditions for CBM enrichment. Spatial variations in burial depth show stability in the east and south, but notable fluctuations are observed near fault F1 in the west and north. These burial depth patterns are closely linked to coal rank, which increases with depth. Although the southeastern region exhibits a lower coal rank than the northwest, its variation is minimal, reflecting a more uniform thermal evolution. Lithologically, the roof of coal seam No. 6 is mainly composed of dense sandstone in the central and southern areas, indicating a strong sealing capacity conducive to gas preservation. This study employs a system that fuses multi-source geological data for analysis, integrating multi-dimensional data such as drilling, logging, seismic, and CBM testing data. It systematically reveals the gas control mechanism of “tectonic–sedimentary–fluid” trinity coupling in low-gentle slope structural belts, providing a new research paradigm for coalbed methane exploration in complex structural areas. It creatively proposes a three-type CBM accumulation model that includes the following: ① a steep flank tectonic fault escape type (tectonics-dominated); ② an axial tectonic hydrodynamic sealing type (water–tectonics composite); and ③ a gentle flank lithology–hydrodynamic sealing type (lithology–water synergy). This classification system breaks through the traditional binary framework, systematically explaining the spatiotemporal matching relationships of the accumulated elements in different structural positions and establishing quantitative criteria for target area selection. It systematically reveals the key controlling roles of low-gentle slope structural belts and slope belts in coalbed methane enrichment, innovatively proposing a new gentle slope accumulation model defined as “slope control storage, low-structure gas reservoir”. These integrated results highlight the mutual control of structural, thermal, and lithological factors on CBM enrichment and provide critical guidance for future exploration in the Ningxia Autonomous Region. Impact Drilling Technology is one of the most effective methods for enhancing the penetration rate and efficiency in hard rock formations. Downhole axial vibration impact tools can provide a stable impact load, but they also increase the complexity of the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) motion. Addressing the problem of vibration fatigue in the lower BHA when subjected to high-frequency impact stresses during impact drilling, this study utilizes finite-element impact modules and Design-Life fatigue analysis software to establish a nonlinear dynamic model of the drill string assembly under axial excitation. It investigates the influence patterns of control parameters, such as the impact energy and impact frequency, on BHA vibration damage and rock-breaking efficiency. The results show that the vibration characteristics of the BHA are significantly affected by the impact tool’s control parameters. Increasing the input impact energy intensifies the amplitude of alternating stress in the drill string system. Meanwhile, the equivalent stress fluctuation of the drill string tends to stabilize at high frequencies above 100 Hz, indicating that high-frequency impacts are beneficial for mitigating vibration damage and prolonging the service life of the BHA. This study provides a theoretical basis for reducing the drill string fatigue damage and optimizing the drilling parameters for an improved performance. Full article

The present study investigates the influence of the configurations of anchor bolts and stiffeners on the monotonic response under moment conditions in the major axis and compression force of partial-strength exposed column base plate connections in order to ameliorate their response, limiting the number of welded details. Parametric finite element simulations were performed based on models calibrated against experimental results available from the recent literature. The results show the efficiency of the investigated configurations, namely, (i) the presence of rib stiffener results in high stiffness and strength with a reduction in ductility; (ii) the linear pattern of anchor bolts (e.g., rectangular distribution) is characterized by the limited contribution of the outer anchor bolts to the overall resistance of the connection; (iii) the trapezoidal pattern of the anchor bolts exhibit a better mechanical performance as well as their efficiency; and (iv) the increase in compression force influences the mechanical response of the base connection with an increase in both resistance and rigidity until the column is stable against the moment–axial force interaction. Surface-guided tram systems are increasingly being recognised not only as mobility instruments but also as agents of urban regeneration that reshape spatial and social dynamics. This study evaluates the configurational impact of the Trambesòs tram in Barcelona on accessibility, integration, and urban cohesion within the Levante del Besòs area. A Space Syntax analysis was conducted in UCL DepthmapX for axial map analysis and visual graph analysis within a 500 m radius around each station. Three typologies of intervention (site-specific, articulation axes, and saturation pieces) guided the assessment. This analysis shows that Avinguda Diagonal and Avinguda Meridiana are primary structural corridors, while stations Glòries, Ca l’Aranyó, and Pere IV recorded the highest accessibility and visual openness. The results indicate that targeted interventions have positive impacts on the Space Syntax metrics regardless of their spatial centrality, highlighting the critical role of this diverse intervention typology in shaping the study area’s spatial configuration and influencing a hierarchy of social appropriation and use. It is concluded that the Trambesòs tram and associated urban interventions have jointly enhanced centrality and permeability in key sectors, and specific peripheral enclaves have local functioning. These findings, focused on spatial and morphological patterns, may support future interventions in urban design and mobility planning. Although the analysis centres on spatial configuration, future research may integrate socioeconomic variables to broaden the understanding of regeneration processes. Full article

As a part of the mining-induced stress redistribution process during coal mining, the repeated loading and unloading process with increasing peak stresses will cause more severe deformation and damage to mining roadways, which is different from the findings in other underground engineering practices. Consequently, cyclic triaxial compression tests with increasing amplitudes were carried out to investigate the mechanical behavior, acoustic emission (AE) characteristics, and damage evolution of coal materials. It is found that peak deviatoric stress and axial residual strain at the failure of coal specimens increase with increasing confining pressures, while the changes in circumferential strain are not obvious. Moreover, the failure patterns of coal specimens exhibit shear failure due to the constraint of confining pressures while some local tensile cracks occur near the shear bands at both ends of the specimens. After that, the damage evolution of coal specimens was analyzed against the regularity of AE counts and energies to develop a damage evolution model. It is concluded that the damage evolution model can not only quantify the deformation and failure process of the coal specimens under cyclic loads with increasing amplitudes but also takes into account both the initial damage due to natural defects and the induced damage by the cyclic loads in previous cycles. The flow pattern in a pumping station intake basin has a significant influence on the inlet conditions of the pumping machine. For the purpose of solving the problems of flow disorder and the uneven flow velocity distribution in the intake basin of a lateral-inlet pumping station with a truncated-type canal, this study takes a flood discharge pumping station as an example and then studies and analyzes the flow pattern in the inlet pool of a lateral-inlet pumping station with a truncated-type canal. The Revit2018 modeling software is used to establish a three-dimensional model, CFD fluid calculation software is used to simulate the fluid, and the reliability of the numerical simulation results is verified using physical model tests. This paper proposes a new type of separated guide wall rectification measure, which is combined with a guide pier and other optimization measures to improve the flow of the inlet pool and is composed of a variety of programs. The results show that the optimization scheme of a “closed flow guide wall and flow guide pier” is the most effective. Compared with the original scheme, the lateral flow velocity distribution ratio and the mean square error (MSE) are reduced, while the axial flow velocity uniformity is increased by 52.24% and the axial flow velocity weighted average angle is increased by 5.92°. The optimal spacing of the dividing deflector wall is investigated using the response surface methodology, and further optimization of the scheme results in a further increase of 2.23% in the flow uniformity.
