This study investigated the fracture behavior of asphalt mixtures under indirect tensile loading by comparing the performance of homogenized and micromechanical finite element (FEMs) models based on the cohesive zone model (CZM). Five asphalt mixture types were tested experimentally, and both models were calibrated and validated using load–displacement curves from indirect tensile tests (IDTs). The micromechanical model, incorporating random aggregate generation and three-phase material definition, exhibited significantly higher predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.86–0.98) than the homogenized model (R2 = 0.66–0.77). The validated micromechanical model was further applied to quantify the impact of construction-related deficiencies—namely, increased air voids, non-continuous gradation, and aggregate segregation. The simulation results showed that higher void content (from 4% to 10%) reduced peak load by up to 35% and increased localized stress concentrations by up to 40%. Discontinuous gradation and uneven aggregate distribution also led to premature crack initiation and more complex fracture paths. These findings demonstrated the value of micromechanical modeling for evaluating sensitivity to mix design and compaction quality, providing a foundation for performance-based asphalt mixture optimization and durability improvement. In order to solve various problems in traditional roads and extend their service life, new road materials have become a research hotspot. Polyurethane prepolymers (PUPs) and ceramic fibers (CFs), as materials with unique properties, were chosen due to their synergistic effect: PUPs provide elasticity and gel-like behavior, while CFs contribute to structural stability and high-temperature resistance, making them ideal for enhancing asphalt performance. PUPs, a thermoplastic and elastic polyurethane gel material, not only enhance the flexibility and adhesion properties of asphalt but also significantly improve the structural stability of composite materials when synergistically combined with CF. Using response surface methodology, an optimized preparation scheme for PUP/CF composite-modified asphalt was investigated. Through aging tests, dynamic shear rate (DSR) testing, bending rate (BBR) testing, microstructure scanning (MSCR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and infrared spectroscopy (IR), the aging performance, rheological properties, permanent deformation resistance, microstructure, and modification mechanism of PUP/CF composite-modified asphalt were investigated. The results indicate that the optimal preparation scheme is a PUP content of 7.4%, a CF content of 2.1%, and a shear time of 40 min. The addition of the PUP and CF significantly enhances the asphalt’s aging resistance, and compared with single-CF-modified asphalt and base asphalt, the PUP/CF composite-modified asphalt exhibits superior high- and low-temperature rheological properties, demonstrating stronger strain recovery capability. The PUP forms a gel network structure in the material, effectively filling the gaps between CF and asphalt, enhancing interfacial bonding strength, and making the overall performance more stable. AFM microscopic morphology shows that PUP/CF composite-modified asphalt has more “honeycomb structures” than matrix asphalt and CF-modified asphalt, forming more structural asphalt and enhancing overall structural stability. This study indicates that the synergistic effect of PUP gel and CF significantly improves the macro and micro properties of asphalt. The PUP forms a three-dimensional elastic gel network in asphalt, improving adhesion and deformation resistance. Using response surface methodology, the optimal formulation (7.4% PUP, 2.1% CF) improves penetration (↓41.5%), softening point (↑6.7 °C), and ductility (↑9%), demonstrating the relevance of gel-based composites for asphalt modification. In actual service, asphalt pavement is subjected to freeze–thaw cycles and ultraviolet radiation (UV) over the long term, which can easily lead to mixture aging, enhanced brittleness, and structural damage, thereby reducing pavement durability. This study focuses on the influence of freeze–thaw cycles and ultraviolet aging on the performance of recycled asphalt mixtures. Systematic indoor road performance tests were carried out, and a fatigue prediction model was established to explore the comprehensive effects of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) content, environmental action (ultraviolet radiation + freeze–thaw cycle), and other factors on the performance of recycled asphalt mixtures. The results show that the high-temperature stability of recycled asphalt mixtures decreases with the increase in environmental action days, while higher RAP content contributes to better high-temperature stability. The higher the proportion of old materials, the more significant the environmental impact on the mixture; both the flexural tensile strain and flexural tensile strength decrease with the increase in environmental action time. When the RAP content increased from 30% to 50%, the bending strain continued to decline. With the extension of environmental action days, the decrease in the immersion Marshall residual stability and the freeze–thaw splitting strength became more pronounced. Although the increase in RAP content can improve the forming stability, the residual stability decreases, and the freeze–thaw splitting strength is lower than that before the freeze–thaw. Based on the fatigue test results, a fatigue life prediction model with RAP content and freeze–thaw cycles as independent variables was constructed using the multiple nonlinear regression method. Verification shows that the established prediction model is basically consistent with the change trend of the test data. The research results provide a theoretical basis and optimization strategy for the performance improvement and engineering application of recycled asphalt materials. Full article

Waste cooking oil (WCO) plays different roles in modified asphalt and significantly affects the performance of the binder. However, a systematic comparative study is still lacking in the existing research. This study investigates the effects of WCO used as a swelling agent for rubber powder (RP) and as a compatibilizer in rubber powder-modified asphalt (RPMA) on the performance of modified asphalt. Specifically, the microstructure and functional groups of WCO-coated RP were first characterized. Then, RPMAs with different RP dosages were prepared, and the storage stability and rheological properties of RPMAs were thoroughly investigated. Finally, the flue gas emission characteristics of different RPMAs at 30% RP dosing were further analyzed, and the corresponding inhibition mechanisms were proposed. The results showed that the RP coated by WCO was fully solubilized internally, and the WCO formed a uniform and continuous coating film on the RP surface. Comparative analysis revealed that when WCO was used as a swelling agent, the prepared S-RPMA exhibited superior storage stability. At a 30% RP content, the softening point difference value of S-RPMA was only 1.8 °C, and the reduction rate of the segregation index reached 40.91%. Surprisingly, after WCO was used to coat the RP, the average concentrations of VOCs and H2S in S-RPMA30 were reduced to 146.7 mg/m3 and 10.6 ppm, respectively, representing decreases of 20.8% and 22.1% compared with the original RPMA30. These findings demonstrate that using WCO as a swelling agent enhances both the physical stability and environmental performance of RPMA, offering valuable insights for the rational application and optimization of WCO incorporation methods in asphalt modification. It also makes meaningful contributions to the fields of coating science and sustainable materials engineering. Full article

The performance of SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene) modified asphalt mixtures can be enhanced through the addition of fibers including basalt, ceramic, and glass. This study investigates whether a reduced SBS content of 3%, combined with 0.3% fiber reinforcement can match or exceed the performance of a traditional 7% SBS mixture. A comparative analysis was carried out by examining both performance efficiency and life cycle costs across ceramic, basalt, and glass fiber-reinforced mixtures. Maintenance requirements for each scenario were factored into the life cycle analysis. To assess structural integrity, 3D finite element simulations were conducted using the Burger’s logit model while focusing on fatigue and rutting damage. Findings indicate that basalt and ceramic fiber mixtures deliver better asphalt mixtures, thereby outperforming the 7% SBS mix by requiring fewer maintenance interventions. However, due to the higher cost of ceramic fiber mixtures at 831 Eur/m3, basalt fiber emerges as the more cost-effective option, achieving a performance efficiency gain of 20% with reduced costs at 532 Eur/m3. Among the fiber-reinforced variants, glass fiber showed the least improvement in performance, with a difference in 11% and 13% when compared to ceramic fiber and basal fiber, respectively. As the global demand for electronic equipment continues to grow, many devices are being replaced more frequently, resulting in a rapid rise in electronic waste (e-waste), now the fastest growing waste stream worldwide. Motivated by this, the objective of this study is to present an environmentally friendly method to recycle acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS), one of the most common e-waste plastics, by using it for asphalt production. In contrast to earlier methods of plastic-modified asphalt production involving complex pretreatments or complimentary additives unsuitable for plant-scale use, this study aims to demonstrate a practical, low-cost solution through the use of carbon black. This approach included physically pretreating ABS plastics for size reduction and incorporating waste tire-derived carbon black to promote effective dispersion in asphalt during wet modification. The rheological properties of the e-waste-modified asphalt were subsequently assessed. The test results indicated that recycling ABS plastics with a blending content of 5% alongside 5% carbon black can enhance cold-weather cracking resistance and high-temperature anti-rutting performance of asphalt. The enhancement can be attributed to the proper preparation procedures of ABS plastics and the addition of carbon black, which can further improve the performance by promoting the proper dispersion of plastic particles in asphalt. The outcome of this study indicates that recycling e-waste plastics through asphalt production can lead to more green and sustainable asphalt construction, reduce total construction costs, and most importantly enhance performance. The inherent limitations of ordinary cement mortar—characterized by its high brittleness and low flexibility—result in a diminished load-bearing capacity, predisposing concrete pavements to cracking. A novel approach has been proposed to enhance material performance by incorporating emulsified asphalt and latex into ordinary cement mortar, aiming to improve the flexibility and durability of concrete pavements effectively. To further validate the feasibility of this proposed approach, a series of comprehensive experimental investigations were conducted, with corresponding conclusions detailed herein. As outlined below, the flexibility properties of the modified cement mortar were systematically evaluated at curing durations of 3, 7, and 28 days. The ratio of flexural to compressive strength can be increased by up to 38.9% at 8% emulsified asphalt content at the age of 28 days, and by up to 50% at 8% latex content. The mechanism of emulsified asphalt and latex-modified cement mortar was systematically investigated using a suite of analytical techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Through comprehensive analyses of microscopic morphology, hydration products, and elemental distribution, the enhancement in cement mortar toughness can be attributed to two primary mechanisms. First, Ca2+ ions combine with the carbonyl groups of emulsified asphalt to form a flexible film structure during cement hydration, thereby reducing the formation of brittle hydrates. Second, active functional groups in latex form a three-dimensional network, regulating internal expansion-contraction tension in the modified mortar and extending its service life. Full article

The composition design of asphalt mixtures plays a pivotal role in determining pavement performance and durability. To improve skeleton stability, paving uniformity, and mechanical strength, this research proposes a three-dimensional optimization framework for asphalt mixture design, focusing on aggregate gradation and optimum asphalt content. A skeleton-dense and anti-segregation gradation optimization method was developed by integrating a previously established skeleton-dense model with a segregation tendency prediction approach. In parallel, a mechanically driven method for determining optimum asphalt content was proposed by introducing the maximum migration shear stress as a performance-based alternative to the conventional Marshall stability parameter. Research results show that asphalt mixtures designed and compacted with the optimized gradation exhibit significantly enhanced high-temperature stability, while maintaining satisfactory low-temperature cracking resistance and moisture susceptibility. Field validation was conducted through the construction of a trial pavement section using the optimized gradation under recommended mixing and compaction temperatures. The resulting pavement demonstrated excellent compaction, strong resistance to segregation, and a highly stable spatial structure. These findings confirm the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in enhancing the high-temperature deformation resistance and overall structural integrity of asphalt mixtures. Full article

It is proposed to reduce the statistical uncertainty to make informed decisions in pavement construction, using a non-destructive method to determine the density (p) of asphalt mixtures, a decisive parameter to know the quality of the material studied and the content of voids (air voids), contrasting the results with destructive and physical tests to specimens extracted at the test site. This was carried out in the field with the EM density gauge (electromagnetic), on a 71.2 km long stretch of road. The results of the non-destructive tests were compared with the AASHTO standards. The study was focused on a representative sample of 25.9% of the total population, obtained using intentional stratified statistical sampling; the standard deviation was taken as the decisive value of dispersion in the determination of the p-density of the mixtures. The AASHTO T343 standard establishes that the permissible standard deviation for asphalt mixtures should be 0.050 g/cm3. Supplementary statistical analysis shows that the measurement error of the EM densitometer and the core-sampling method is ±1.8%, and the correlation coefficient within the 95% confidence interval reaches 0.91. The results of the analysis show a convincing trend towards the implementation of non-destructive methods, such as EM density gauge, to guarantee the determination of the quality of asphalt mixtures in the field, reducing the time required to determine the quality of the asphalt mixes. To broaden clean asphalt modification methods, this study employs a composite polymer of maleic anhydride-grafted styrene-butadiene-styrene (MA-g-SBS) and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) as a modifier. The composite is formulated into polymer latex and used to modify emulsified asphalt. Routine performance tests were conducted on MA-g-SBS/SBS composite latex-modified emulsified asphalt (MSMEA) with varying ratios to determine the optimal composition. The ideal ratio was found to be MA-g-SBS:SBS = 1:4. Subsequently, conventional property tests, rheological analyses, microphase structure observations, and bending beam creep tests were conducted on MSMEA with the optimal ratio to assess the impact of the composite latex on asphalt performance. Findings indicated that increasing the latex content significantly enhanced the softening point and ductility while reducing penetration. These macroscopic improvements were notably superior to those achieved with single SBS latex modification. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that at low dosages, the MA-g-SBS/SBS composite dispersed uniformly as point-like structures within the asphalt. At higher dosages (above 5%), a distinct network structure emerged. The addition of the composite latex raised the complex shear modulus and rutting factor while reducing the phase angle, with pronounced fluctuations observed between 4% and 5% dosages. This suggests a substantial enhancement in the high-temperature performance of the emulsified asphalt, attributed to the formation of the network structure. FT-IR results confirmed that a chemical reaction occurred during the modification process. Additionally, the bending beam creep test demonstrated that the composite latex reduced asphalt brittleness and improved its low-temperature performance. Full article

To obtain waterborne polymer-modified emulsified asphalt materials with better comprehensive performance, waterborne polymer modifiers including waterborne epoxy resin (WER)-reinforced styrene–butadiene–styrene block copolymer (SBS), waterborne acrylate (WA) or styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) emulsion were prepared. The mechanical strength, toughness, adhesion and impact resistance of these waterborne polymers were evaluated. Furthermore, the correlation between the performance indicators of the waterborne polymers was analyzed. Based on Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, the mechanism of WER-modified SBS and WA was characterized. The results show that adding 10%–15% WER can significantly improve the mechanical properties of the waterborne polymer. The performances of modified SBS and WA are better than that of modified SBR. When the content of WER is 10%, the tensile strength, elongation at break and pull-off strength of WER-modified SBS and WA are 4.80–6.38 MPa, 476.3%–579.6% and 1.62–1.70 MPa, respectively. The mechanical strength and breaking energy of the waterborne polymers show a significant linear correlation with their application properties such as adhesion, bonding and impact resistance. FTIR and TG analyses indicate that WER-modified SBS or WA prepared via emulsion blending undergo primarily physical modifications, enhancing thermal stability while promoting crosslinking and curing. This study investigates the performance improvement of asphalt binders through the incorporation of two polymers, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS), with asphalt grade (60–70), to address the growing demand for durable and climate-resilient pavement materials, particularly in areas exposed to high temperatures like Iraq. The main objective is to improve the mechanical characteristics, thermal stability, and workability of typical asphalt mixtures to extend pavement lifespan and lessen maintenance costs. A thorough set of rheological, physical, morphological, and workability tests was performed on asphalt binders modified with varying content of PVC (3%, 5%, 7%, and 9%) and SBS (3%, 4%, and 5%). The significance of this research lies in optimizing binder formulations to enhance resistance to deformation and failure modes such as rutting and thermal cracking, which are common in extreme climates. The results indicate that PVC enhances performance grade (PG), softening point, and viscosity, although higher contents (7% and 9%) exceeded penetration grade specifications. SBS-modified binders demonstrated marked improvements in softening point, viscosity, and rutting resistance, with PG values increasing from PG64-x (unmodified) to PG82-x at 5% SBS. Fluorescence microscopy confirmed optimal polymer dispersion at 5% concentration for both SBS and PVC, ensuring compatibility with the base asphalt. Workability testing revealed that SBS-modified mixtures exhibited higher torque requirements, indicating reduced workability compared to both PVC-modified and unmodified binders. These findings offer valuable insights for the design of high-performance asphalt mixtures suitable for hot-climate applications and contribute to the development of more durable and cost-effective road infrastructure. This study proposes a method for separating asphalt and aggregates in recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) materials using surfactants as solvents. This method utilizes surfactants to soften the asphalt by reducing its surface tension, separating the RAP clusters, and washing away the asphalt from the RAP. The wastewater is recycled during the emulsification–separation process without discharge. Factors affecting the separation effect of RAP, including the type of anionic surfactants, the surfactant concentration, the emulsion-to-RAP ratio, temperature, the rotation rate and time, and the RAP’s particle size, were investigated in depth, and the separation effect and its influence on the aggregate properties were evaluated. The experimental results indicate that when using the optimal process to mix and treat 13.2 mm and 9.5 mm RAP clusters, it is possible to achieve 100% separation of the coarse RAP above 4.75 mm, with a 64.58% reduction in the asphalt content. The angularity of the aggregate remained unchanged after separation. It was observed from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images that the asphalt on the surface of the coarse aggregate had been eluted, and the morphology of the aggregate surface was completely exposed. This environmentally friendly separation method provides new possibilities for high-content RAP recycling in pavement engineering. Full article

Aiming at the problems of serious pavement temperature diseases, low efficiency and high loss of ice-breaking methods, high occupancy rate of waste tires and the low utilization rate and insufficient durability of rubber particles, this paper aims to improve the service level of roads and ensure the safety of winter pavements. A pavement material with high efficiency, low carbon and environmental friendliness for active snow melting and ice breaking is developed. Firstly, NaOH, NaClO and KH550 were used to optimize the treatment of rubber particles. The hydrophilic properties, surface morphology and phase composition of rubber particles before and after optimization were studied, and the optimal treatment method of rubber particles was determined. Then, the optimized rubber particles were used to replace the natural aggregate in the polyurethane gel mixture by the volume substitution method, and the optimum polyurethane gel dosages and molding and curing processes were determined. Finally, the influence law of the road performance of RPGM was compared and analyzed by means of an indoor test, and the ice-breaking effect of RPGM was explored. The results showed that the contact angles of rubber particles treated with three solutions were reduced by 22.5%, 30.2% and 36.7%, respectively. The surface energy was improved, the element types on the surface of rubber particles were reduced and the surface impurities were effectively removed. Among them, the improvement effect of the KH550 solution was the most significant. With the increase in rubber particle content from 0% to 15%, the dynamic stability of the mixture gradually increases, with a maximum increase of 23.5%. The maximum bending strain increases with the increase in its content. The residual stability increases first and then decreases with the increase in rubber particle content, and the increase ranges are 1.4%, 3.3% and 0.5%, respectively. The anti-scattering performance increases with the increase in rubber content, and an excessive amount will lead to an increase in the scattering loss rate, but it can still be maintained below 5%. The fatigue life of polyurethane gel mixtures with 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% rubber particles is 2.9 times, 3.8 times, 4.3 times and 4.0 times higher than that of the AC-13 asphalt mixture, respectively, showing excellent anti-fatigue performance. The friction coefficient of the mixture increases with an increase in the rubber particle content, which can be increased by 22.3% compared with the ordinary asphalt mixture. RPGM shows better de-icing performance than traditional asphalt mixtures, and with an increase in rubber particle content, the ice-breaking ability is effectively improved. When the thickness of the ice layer exceeds 9 mm, the ice-breaking ability of the mixture is significantly weakened. Mainly through the synergistic effect of stress coupling, thermal effect and interface failure, the bonding performance of the ice–pavement interface is weakened under the action of driving load cycle, and the ice layer is loosened, broken and peeled off, achieving efficient de-icing. This research aims to investigate the possibility of measuring dielectric constant as an alternative proxy for estimating E* through a non-destructive procedure. An experimental program was conducted on dense-graded (DG) and open-graded (OG) asphalt mixtures, where variable asphalt contents and compaction levels were controlled to achieve different air voids. The measurements of dielectric constant were performed with a Percometer, and E* values were obtained using standard laboratory tests. For DG mixtures, a clear correlation was observed between dielectric constant, air void content and effective binder ratio. The less consistent relationships for OG mixtures were likely due to the more heterogeneous structure of the OG mixtures, the conductive slag aggregates and a limited dataset. Using dielectric values, two predictive models were developed (DIME_DG and DIME_OG), with the former showing higher reliability. Verification with independent specimens confirmed model robustness. This dielectric-based approach offers a practical, cost-effective alternative to traditional modulus testing. The key innovation of this study is the integration of the asphalt mix dielectric constant into established dynamic modulus predictive models, offering a novel approach that enhances the sensitivity of these models to mixture-specific characteristics beyond traditional volumetric and binder properties.
