Background: Varicella remains a prevalent vaccine-preventable disease, but breakthrough infections are increasingly reported. However, long-term, population-based studies investigating the temporal and demographic characteristics of breakthrough varicella remain limited. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed surveillance data from Jinhua City, China, from 2016 to 2024. Varicella case records were obtained from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention (CISDCP), while vaccination data were retrieved from the Zhejiang Provincial Immunization Program Information System (ISIS). Breakthrough cases were defined as infections occurring more than 42 days after administration of the varicella vaccine. Differences in breakthrough interval were analyzed across subgroups defined by dose, sex, age, population category, and vaccination type. A bivariate cubic regression model was used to assess the combined effect of initial vaccination age and dose interval on the breakthrough interval. Results: Among 28,778 reported varicella cases, 7373 (25.62%) were classified as breakthrough infections, with a significant upward trend over the 9-year period (p < 0.001). Most cases occurred in school-aged children, especially those aged 6–15 years. One-dose recipients consistently showed shorter breakthrough intervals than two-dose recipients (M = 62.10 vs. 120.10 months, p < 0.001). Breakthrough intervals also differed significantly by sex, age group, population category, and vaccination type (p < 0.05). Regression analysis revealed a negative correlation between the initial vaccination age, the dose interval, and the breakthrough interval (R2 = 0.964, p < 0.001), with earlier and closely spaced vaccinations associated with longer protection. Conclusions: The present study demonstrates that a two-dose varicella vaccination schedule, when initiated at an earlier age and administered with a shorter interval between doses, provides more robust and longer-lasting protection. These results offer strong support for incorporating varicella vaccination into China’s National Immunization Program to enhance vaccine coverage and reduce the public health burden associated with breakthrough infections. Background: Chemical eye burns are a serious ophthalmic emergency that can lead to permanent vision loss in severe cases. This study aims to evaluate structural changes in the posterior segment of the eye in individuals who have experienced chemical burns. Methods: The study included 64 eyes from 54 patients with chemical burns (chemical burn group) and 87 healthy eyes from 87 subjects (control group), matched by age and sex. Patients had confirmed burns with limbal ischemia, no glaucoma, normal intraocular pressure, and no major ocular or systemic diseases. Burned eyes were examined during the acute phase and again at 3 months, with some followed up at 6 months if significant retinal asymmetry was detected. Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness was assessed in four quadrants, and ganglion cell complex (GCL++) thickness was analyzed using automated segmentation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) maps. Results: This study compared measurements between the burn group, the control group, and timepoints. OCT analysis revealed no significant difference in total RNFL thickness between burn patients and controls (mean difference: −1.14 µm, 95% CI: −3.92 to 1.64). Similarly, GCL++ thickness did not differ significantly between groups (mean difference: −0.97 µm, 95% CI: −3.31 to 1.37). At 6-month follow-up, a non-significant decline in both RNFL and GCL++ thicknesses was observed. Logistic regression identified higher Dua grade as an independent predictor of RNFL thinning (OR: 4.816, 95% CI: 1.103–21.030; p = 0.037). Patients with severe ocular chemical burns (Dua grade ≥ 3) demonstrated reduced RNFL thickness in all quadrants compared to healthy controls. The most pronounced reductions were observed in the nasal and superior quadrants (p = 0.007 and p = 0.069, respectively); however, after applying Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons, only the difference in the nasal quadrant remained statistically significant (adjusted p = 0.035). Conclusions: Although overall RNFL and GCL++ thicknesses did not differ significantly between burn patients and healthy controls, patients with severe ocular chemical burns (Dua grade ≥ 3) showed a significant reduction in RNFL thickness, in the nasal quadrant. Higher Dua grade was identified as an independent predictor of RNFL thinning. These findings suggest a potential association between burn severity and posterior segment changes, highlighting the need for further longitudinal studies with larger cohorts. Full article

Stunting is a chronic growth disorder that not only affects height but may also impair craniofacial development. Facial proportions, especially in the vertical dimension, may provide additional anthropometric insight into growth status among children. Objectives: To assess and compare the vertical and horizontal facial proportions of stunted and non-stunted children, and to explore the potential of facial dimensions as supportive indicators for early-stunting detection in community-based settings. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study involved 266 children aged 7–72 months (mean age 42.63 ± 13.82 months) from several community health centers in Bandung, Indonesia. Children were categorized as stunted or non-stunted based on WHO height-for-age Z-scores. Facial dimensions were measured directly by calibrated pediatric dentistry residents using manual instruments. The vertical dimensions included Nasion–Subnasale (N–SN) and Subnasale–Menton (SN–M), while horizontal dimensions included zygomatic width and intergonion width. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and Spearman correlation. Results: Significant differences were found in vertical facial dimensions between stunted and non-stunted children: median N–SN (32.4 mm vs. 33.6 mm; p = 0.003) and SN–M (42.5 mm vs. 45.1 mm; p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in horizontal dimensions. All facial parameters showed a positive correlation with age (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found based on sex. Conclusions: Stunted children exhibited shorter vertical facial dimensions compared to their non-stunted peers, while horizontal dimensions remained stable across groups. Vertical facial proportions may serve as supportive indicators in the screening and monitoring of childhood stunting. This method has potential for integration into community-based growth monitoring using simple or digital anthropometric tools. Full article

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are highly effective, but can be of environmental concern due to primary and secondary non-target exposure, with the latter possible being relevant to domestic cats. Therefore, liver residues of ARs and an alternative rodenticide, α-chloralose, were systematically monitored in domestic cats for the first time in the current study. In 2021 and 2022, the carcasses of 99 cats were collected in Slovenia and liver residues were measured by using solid supported liquid–liquid extraction and LC-MS/MS. The results show that 65% of cats carried at least one rodenticide. The second-generation ARs brodifacoum and bromadiolone were most prevalent and found in 53.5 and 25.3% of the samples, respectively. Of first-generation ARs, coumatetralyl was the most prevalent (21.2% of cats). More compounds were detected at high human population density, low farm density and in rural versus intermediate landscapes, but no effect was found for livestock density. Similar trends were found for the presence of brodifacoum, bromadiolone and all rodenticides combined. Farm density was negatively correlated with brodifacoum liver concentration. Individual factors (cat age, sex, outdoor activity) did not matter. The results indicate that a reasonably populated rural landscape, and not the rural or intermediate environment as such, is the main driver of cat exposure to ARs. The risk quotient (RQ) of worst-case acute brodifacoum poisoning was 1506. In summary, a potential environmental problem is globally highlighted for cats that is probably related to secondary exposure to ARs, with a pattern different to that seen in wild predators. Cats are an appropriate sentinel species for assessing rodenticide exposure and endangerment in the environment. Full article

The pathophysiological mechanism linking oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is not completely elucidated, especially in young individuals. This study aimed to examine redox status in an adolescent Montenegrin population in relation to cardiovascular risk score (CVRS). A cohort of 182 adolescents (76% girls) aged between 16 and 19 was examined. Total antioxidant status (TAS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), malondialdehyde (MDA), and total oxidant status (TOS) were determined. Pro-oxy score, anti-oxy score, and oxy score were calculated as comprehensive parameters of overall redox homeostasis status. CVRS was calculated by summarizing several risk factors (i.e., sex, age, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired fasting glucose, and smoking). A significant positive correlation between CVRS and TOS (rho = 0.246, p = 0.001) and AOPP (rho = 0.231, p = 0.002) and MDA (rho = 0.339, p < 0.001), respectively, and a negative correlation with the TAS/TOS ratio (rho= −0.208, p = 0.005) was observed. An increase in pro-oxy scores as well as oxy scores with CVRS risk increase were observed. Anti-oxy scores did not differ between CVRS subgroups. There is a significant relationship between cardiovascular risk score and oxidative stress in the adolescent Montenegrin population. These findings support the possibility for improvement of age-specific CVD risk algorithms by adding redox homeostasis parameters in addition to conventional ones. Full article

CR is a cornerstone of secondary prevention for cardiovascular disease, offering well-established benefits across mortality, hospital readmission, functional capacity, and quality of life. Despite Class I guideline endorsements and decades of supporting evidence, CR remains vastly underutilized, particularly among women, racial and ethnic minorities, older adults, and individuals in low-resource settings. This review synthesizes the current evidence base for CR, with emphasis on disease-specific benefits across different cardiovascular diseases, and highlights recent data on its role in expanding populations, including patients with HFpEF, older adults, patients with advanced heart failure, and those undergoing transcatheter interventions. We also examine persistent barriers to CR access and participation, including system-level and referral limitations, as well as patient-level disparities by age, sex, race and ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Building on this, we explore innovative delivery models and recent policy initiatives such as hybrid programs and reimbursement reform, all designed to expand access, promote equity, and modernize CR delivery. The findings underscore the need for continued investment, advocacy, and innovation to ensure equitable access to CR and its life-saving benefits across the full cardiovascular care continuum. Objectives: The aim of the study was to investigate caries experience in correlation with self-reported oral health-related habits in a sample of blind and low-vision individuals in Croatia. Methods: The study is a part of the research in the “Project for Oral Health Promotion in Blind and Visually Impaired Persons” conducted at the Zagreb University School of Dental Medicine from 2014 to 2018. The final sample consisted of 85 adults: 42 females and 43 males; 50 blind and 35 low-vision individuals, age range 18–98. The assessment included dental examination and a questionnaire. Results: The median DMFT (Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth) index score was 17.0 (IQR = 12.5–22.0), with no significant difference between sexes or between blind and low-vision individuals. The occurrence of untreated caries was low (median D-component = 1.0), while the median F-component was 6.0. There was a significant increase in M-component and DMFT in older age groups. The number of untreated caries (D-component) was significantly correlated with consummation of soft drinks and smoking. Total DMFT did not correlate with frequency of tooth brushing, time since last dental visit, smoking, or level of education. Conclusions: This study revealed high caries experience among blind and visually impaired individuals that did not correlate with factors that normally influence oral health. Similar results were found in the control group, reflecting a 30-year post-war period without organized preventive care. The low number of decayed teeth reflects the availability of public dental care in Croatia; however, preventive care should be provided for both this vulnerable group and the general population. Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant factor affecting prognosis and functional capacity in patients after cardiovascular events. This study aimed to assess the impact of coexisting diabetes on exercise tolerance and hemodynamic parameters in patients qualified for cardiac rehabilitation. Methods: A total of 452 patients (86 women, 366 men; mean age 63.21 ± 7.16 years) who had experienced cardiovascular incidents, including 226 individuals with coexisting DM (DM group) and 226 age- (±1 year) and sex-matched individuals without DM (non-DM group), were included in the analysis. All participants underwent an exercise test using a bicycle ergometer. Clinical data, comorbidities, medication use, left ventricular ejection fraction, and exercise test parameters were evaluated. Results: Patients with DM displayed a higher number of comorbidities (4.29 ± 1.26 vs. 3.19 ± 1.30; p < 0.001), greater medication use (8.71 ± 2.16 vs. 7.83 ± 2.05; p < 0.001), higher body mass (86.93 ± 13.35 kg vs. 80.92 ± 15.25 kg; p < 0.001), and a lower left ventricular ejection fraction (48.78 ± 8.99% vs. 50.01 ± 8.40%; p = 0.002) compared to those in the non-DM group. Diabetic patients also exhibited lower exercise capacity, expressed as peak power per kilogram of body mass (1.05 ± 0.27 W/kg vs. 1.16 ± 0.31 W/kg; p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed regarding absolute peak power or maximum heart rate. Conclusions: In patients after cardiovascular incidents, the presence of diabetes is associated with reduced relative exercise capacity and lower ejection fraction. Full article

Background: The relationship between sports participation and food preferences in adults, as well as the influence of gender, is still unclear. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between sports participation and individual food preferences and to explore potential gender differences among sports participants in a large group of Italian adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 2665 adults (aged ≥ 18 years) who lead normal lives and underwent a routine lifestyle and dietary assessment at a clinical centre specialising in nutrition, metabolic health, and lifestyle counselling in Rome. Participants completed an online questionnaire on food preferences (19 foods) and sports practice. Multivariate logistic regression models, adjusted for age, sex, and smoking, were used to assess associations. Results: Sports participation was defined as engaging in structured physical activity at least once per week and was reported by 53.5% of subjects (men: 60.1%; women: 49.0%; p < 0.0001). After adjustment, active individuals were significantly more likely to prefer plant-based drinks, low-fat yoghurt, fish, cooked and raw vegetables, fruit, whole grains, tofu, and dark chocolate (all p < 0.05) and less likely to prefer cow’s milk (p = 0.018). Among sport participants, males were more likely to prefer meat (general, white, red, processed) and eggs, while females preferred plant-based drinks. No significant gender differences were observed for dairy products, legumes, or fish. Differences in food preferences were also observed according to the type of sport, with bodybuilders showing higher preference for tofu and dark chocolate. The strongest associations were found in the 25–44 age group. Conclusions: Sports participation is independently associated with specific food preferences, characterised by greater preference for plant-based and fibre-rich foods, and gender differences in food choices persist even among active adults. These findings highlight the need to consider both sports participation and gender when designing nutritional interventions. Full article

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the mean age of eruption of permanent teeth and their clinical emergence sequence in a longitudinal sample of children from a multi-ethnic urban population. Methods: A total of 854 children (413 females and 441 males), aged between 4 and 13 years, were examined annually for a minimum of 4 consecutive years, as part of their annual dental screening appointment. The presence of permanent teeth was recorded at each examination. Mean and median ages, with standard deviations, of individual tooth eruption were calculated, in addition to the eruption sequence, and the analysis of the data was performed using the lognormal distribution model. Regarding the error of the method, two examiners reviewed all relevant dental screening forms, and any discrepancies were resolved through consultation with the senior author. Results: The sequence of permanent tooth eruption followed a consistent pattern across sexes, with distinct differences between the maxillary and mandibular arches. In the maxilla, eruption began with the first molar, while in the mandible, it started with the central incisor. Mandibular teeth generally erupted earlier than maxillary teeth, with girls experiencing earlier eruption than boys, with some exceptions, and prolonged eruption periods. No statistically significant differences were found in the timing of eruption between contralateral homologous teeth. Conclusions: Based on the present data, the observed sequence of tooth eruption in a multi-ethnic urban population showed similar patterns across sexes. Mandibular teeth generally erupt earlier than maxillary teeth, with girls experiencing earlier eruption than boys. Full article

This review integrates current research to explore how stress-related growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) signaling, ceramides derived from gut microbiota, and mitochondrial dysfunction in the brain interact to influence both metabolic and psychiatric conditions. Evidence suggests that these pathways converge to regulate brain energy homeostasis through feedback mechanisms involving the autonomic nervous system and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. GDF15 emerges as a key stress-responsive biomarker that links peripheral metabolism with brainstem GDNF family receptor alpha-like (GFRAL)-mediated anxiety circuits. Meanwhile, ceramides impair hippocampal mitochondrial function via membrane incorporation and disruption of the respiratory chain. These disruptions may contribute to sustained pathological states such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive dysfunction. Although direct mechanistic data are limited, integrating these pathways provides a conceptual framework for understanding metabolic–psychiatric comorbidities. Furthermore, differences in age, sex, and genetics may influence these systems, highlighting the need for personalized interventions. Targeting mitochondrial function, GDF15-GFRAL signaling, and gut microbiota composition may offer new therapeutic strategies. This integrative perspective helps conceptualize how metabolic and psychiatric mechanisms interact for understanding the pathophysiology of metabolic and psychiatric comorbidities and highlights therapeutic targets for precision medicine. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of breed and sex (3 × 2) on the basic chemical composition, concentration of some minerals, and physicochemical properties of edible giblets of farm geese. The study material consisted of edible giblets (livers, gizzards, hearts) obtained from 42 geese from three Polish native breeds (Rypin, Suwałki, Kartuzy) at 220 weeks of age. Edible giblets were obtained during goose evisceration from seven males and seven females of each breed. Each bird was an experimental unit. Goose breed and sex had a significant effect on the chemical composition and physicochemical properties of the edible giblets. Rypin geese had higher (p < 0.05) intramuscular fat content in the gizzard and heart, as well as higher protein content in the heart and lower water content in the gizzard, compared to Kartuzy and Suwałki geese. Kartuzy geese, in turn, had higher content of water in the heart, and higher concentrations of phosphorus, calcium, iron, manganese, sodium, and chromium in the liver, compared to Rypin and Suwałki geese. In turn, Suwałki geese had higher concentrations of phosphorus in the gizzard, and potassium, phosphorus, copper, and iron in the heart compared to the hearts of Rypin and Suwałki geese, while Kartuzy and Suwałki geese higher concentrations of sodium, magnesium, zinc, and manganese in hearts than the hearts of Rypin geese. In these studies, the highest lightness (L*) was observed in the liver and heart of Rypin geese, the lowest yellowness (b*) was observed in the gizzard of Suwałki geese, and the highest pH24 and EC24 were observed in the heart of Kartuzy geese. Regardless of breed, males had higher protein, collagen, and intramuscular fat contents in the heart, a higher water content in the gizzard, higher concentrations of potassium, and sodium in the liver and gizzard, copper in the heart and liver, and phosphorus in the gizzard, and less water in the heart and zinc in the liver, as well as higher (p < 0.05) concentrations of iron in the liver and heart compared with females. The breed by sex interaction was significant for intramuscular fat and water content in the gizzard and heart, and protein content in the heart. Significant differences were also noted for EC24 in the liver and heart, yellowness of the gizzard, and concentrations of most labeled minerals in edible giblets. The obtained results indicate that the nutritional value and suitability of edible goose giblets for the poultry industry vary depending on breed and sex. Due to the limited research on the chemical composition and physicochemical properties of goose giblets, further research in this area is necessary in the future. Full article

High Efficacy of Triclabendazole/Ivermectin Combination Compared to Triclabendazole Monotherapy for Treating Human Fascioliasis in Upper Egypt: A Prospective Study

Triclabendazole (TCBZ) is the gold standard treatment for fascioliasis. However, reports on resistance are increasing, emphasizing the need for alternative therapy. Combining TCBZ with ivermectin (IVM) was found to be effective for treating animal fascioliasis. Building on this, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the TCBZ/IVM combination therapy for human fascioliasis. This study enrolled 136 patients with Fasciola from Upper Egypt, and they were divided into the first group (n = 65), who received TCBZ monotherapy, and the second group (n = 71), who received the TCBZ/IVM combination. Assessments were to evaluate treatment response based on clinical, eosinophilic, and radiological parameters. Chronic fasciolosis was diagnosed in 17 patients (12.5%). No differences were observed in age and sex. Significant improvements were noted in all parameters in both groups, with more pronounced effects observed in the second group. A significantly higher complete response, including clinical, eosinophilic, and radiological improvements, was reported in the combined therapy group, with 53.3% compared to 26.2% in the monotherapy group (p < 0.001). A high baseline eosinophilic count was significantly associated with response. The efficacy of the TCBZ/IVM combination for treating human fascioliasis suggested a possible boosting effect, which can benefit regions of TCBZ failure. Further large-scale randomized studies are warranted to confirm these findings. Full article

Blood-based biomarkers allow monitoring of an individual’s health status and provide insights into metabolic and inflammatory processes in conditions like obesity, cardiovascular, and liver diseases. However, selecting suitable biomarkers and optimizing analytical assays presents challenges, is time-consuming and laborious. Moreover, knowledge of potential sex differences remains incomplete as research is often carried out in men. This study aims at enabling researchers to make informed choices on the type of biomarkers, analytical assays, and dilutions being used. More specifically, we analyzed plasma concentrations of >90 biomarkers using commonly available ELISA or electrochemiluminescence-based multiplex methods, comparing normal weight (BMI < 25; n = 40) with obese (BMI > 30; n = 40) adult blood donors of comparable age. To help choose optimal biomarker sets, we grouped frequently employed biomarkers into biological categories (e.g., adipokines, acute-phase proteins, complement factors, cytokines, myokines, iron metabolism, vascular inflammation), first comparing normal-weight with obese persons, and thereafter exploratively comparing women and men within each BMI group. Many biomarkers linked to chronic inflammation and dysmetabolism were elevated in persons with obesity, including several adipokines, interleukins, chemokines, acute-phase proteins, complement factors, and oxidized LDL. Further exploration suggests sex disparities in biomarker levels within both normal-weight and obese groups. This comprehensive dataset of biomarkers across diverse biological domains constitutes a reference resource that may provide valuable guidance for researchers in selecting appropriate biomarkers and analytical assays for own studies. Diabetes-related pathophysiological processes contribute to endothelial dysfunction, arterial stiffening (AS), hypertension, vascular remodeling, and impaired myocardial perfusion. This study aimed to assess the relationship between arterial wall parameters and sST2 concentration as potential risk factors in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and investigate sex-related differences. To achieve this, we enrolled 100 patients with suspected or exacerbated coronary artery disease (CAD) and divided them into a T2DM group (n = 58) and a control group (n = 42). Endothelial reactivity (lnRHI), ABI, sST2 levels, and carotid–femoral (cfPWV) and carotid–radial pulse wave velocity (crPWV) were assessed. Coronary angiography was performed in every patient, and epicardial flow and myocardial perfusion were evaluated using QuBE and FLASH. Our results showed that the coronary angiographic findings were similar in both groups. However, T2DM patients had a significantly higher central AS (cfPWV 10.8 ± 2 vs. 9.9 ± 2.7 m/s, p < 0.05) and vascular age (70.0 ± 12.3 vs. 61.3 ± 15.4 years, p < 0.05), while peripheral AS, RHI, and ABI showed no differences. CfPWV correlated with renal function; higher HbA1c and sST2 levels were additionally associated with advanced vascular age. Notably, central AS and vascular age were higher in men with T2DM but not in women. These findings indicate that T2DM patients exhibit increased central AS and vascular aging, influenced by sST2 levels, suggesting fibrosis as a target for precision medicine in T2DM. Full article
