Originally introduced in the 1960s by DISA Elektronik as a calibration tunnel for hot-wire anemometers, the Type 55D41 has now been reengineered into a versatile and modern aerodynamic test platform. While retaining key legacy components, such as the converging nozzle and the 55D42 power unit, the upgraded system features a redesigned modular test section with optical-grade quartz windows. This enhancement enables compatibility with advanced flow diagnostics and visualization methods, including PTV, DIC, and schlieren imaging. The modernized facility maintains the precision and flow stability that made the original design widely respected, while expanding its functionality to meet the demands of contemporary experimental research. Its architecture supports the aerodynamic characterization of micro-scale static pressure probes used in aerospace, propulsion, and micro gas turbine applications. In response to the need for separation and utilization of residual film mixtures after transformation of protaetia brevitarsis larvae, a pneumatic drum-sieve-type separator for transforming mixtures of protaetia brevitarsis larvae was designed. First, the suspension velocity of each component was determined by the suspension speed test. Secondly, the separation process of residual film, larvae, and insect sand was formulated on the basis of biological activities, shape differences, and aerodynamic response characteristics. Eventually, the main structural parameters and working parameters of the machine were determined. In order to optimize the separation effect, a single-factor experiment and a quadratic regression response surface experiment containing three factors and three levels were carried out, and the corresponding regression model was established. The experimental results showed that the effects of the air speed at the inlet, inclination angle of the sieve cylinder, and rotational speed of the sieve cylinder on the impurity rate of the residual film decreased in that order, and that the effects of the rotational speed of the sieve cylinder, inclination angle of the sieve cylinder, and air speed at the inlet on the inactivation rate of the larvae decreased in that order. Through parameter optimization, a better combination of working parameters was obtained: the rotational speed of the sieve cylinder was 24 r/min, the inclination angle of the sieve cylinder was −0.43°, and the air speed at the inlet was 5.32 m/s. The average values of residual film impurity rate and larval inactivation rate obtained from the material sieving test under these parameters were 8.74% and 3.18%, with the relative errors of the theoretically optimized values being less than 5%. The results of the study can provide a reference for the resource utilization of residual film and impurity mixtures and the development of equipment for the living body separation of protaetia brevitarsis. This study analyzes the impact of geometric variations induced by the manufacturing process on the aerodynamic efficiency of an airfoil used in the design of a 3 kW wind turbine blade. For this purpose, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was implemented, and the results were compared with those obtained using QBlade software. After blade fabrication, experimental evaluation was performed using the laser triangulation technique, enabling the reconstruction of the deformed airfoils and their comparison with the original geometry. Additional CFD simulations were carried out on the manufactured airfoil to quantify the loss of aerodynamic efficiency due to geometrical deformations. The results show that the geometric deviations significantly affect the aerodynamic coefficients, generating a decrease in the lift coefficient and an increase in the drag coefficient, which negatively impacts the airfoil aerodynamic efficiency. A 14.9% reduction in the rotor power coefficient was observed with the deformed airfoils compared to the original design. This study emphasizes the importance of quality control in wind turbine blade manufacturing processes and its impact on turbine power performance. In addition, the findings can contribute to the development of design compensation strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of geometric imperfections on the aerodynamic performance of wind turbines. The novel enhanced dynamic game method (EDGM) is proposed to advance game-based design approaches, with a focus on enhancing solution distribution, precision, and the ability to reveal the dynamic influence sensitivity of design variables on objective functions. An integrated mathematical model is developed by combining EDGM with PARSEC and CST parameterization methods, forming a systematic framework for offshore wind turbine airfoil optimization. Targeting airfoils with approximately 30% and 35% thickness, the study aims to improve annual energy production (AEP) and optimize the polar moment of inertia. Redesigned airfoils using the EDGM-integrated model exhibit significant enhancements in aerodynamic performance and anti-flutter capability compared to baseline airfoils DU97W300 and DU99W350. The methodology’s superiority is validated through analyses of pressure distributions, lift-to-drag ratios, and streamline patterns, as well as comparative evaluations using HV and Spacing metrics, demonstrating EDGM’s potential for broader engineering applications in complex multi-objective optimization scenarios. The advancement of computational capabilities has allowed for more efficient airfoil analysis and design. Consequently, it has become possible to expand the design space and explore new geometries and configurations. However, the current state of development does not yet support a fully automated optimization process. Instead, the newly introduced capabilities have effectively transferred the previously trial-and-error-based approach used in geometry design to the formulation of the optimization problem. The goal of this work is to study the formulation of an optimization problem and propose a new methodology that better portrays the aircraft’s requirements for airfoil performance. The new objective function, added to an existing tool, estimates the main performance parameters of an aircraft for the Air Cargo Challenge (ACC) 2022 competition using a method that extrapolates the characteristics of the airfoil into the aircraft’s performance. In addition, the traditional relative aerodynamic property improvements, in this work, are coupled with the performance results to smooth the polar curve of the resulting airfoil. The optimization algorithm is based on the free-gradient technique Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), using the B-spline parametrization and a coupled viscous/inviscid interaction method as the flow solver. Surface Air-Cooled Oil Coolers (SACOCs) can become a critical component in managing the increasing thermal loads of modern turbofan engines. Installed within the bypass duct, SACOCs utilize high-mass flow bypass air for convective heat rejection, reducing reliance on traditional Fuel-Oil Heat Exchangers. This review explores SACOC design principles, integration challenges, aerodynamic impacts, and performance trade-offs. Emphasis is placed on the balance between thermal efficiency and aerodynamic penalties such as pressure drop and flow distortion. Experimental techniques, including wind tunnel testing, are discussed alongside numerical methods, and Conjugate Heat Transfer modeling. Presented studies mostly demonstrate the impact of fin geometry and placement on both heat transfer and drag. Optimization strategies and Additive Manufacturing techniques are also covered. SACOCs are positioned to play a central role in future propulsion systems, especially in ultra-high bypass ratio and hybrid-electric architectures, where traditional cooling strategies are insufficient. This review highlights current advancements, identifies limitations, and outlines research directions to enhance SACOC efficiency in aerospace applications. Full article

This paper addresses the challenge of maximizing power extraction in offshore wind energy systems through the development of an enhanced maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control strategy. Offshore wind energy is inherently intermittent, leading to discrepancies between power generation and electricity demand. To address this issue, we propose three advanced control algorithms to perform a comparative analysis: sliding mode control (SMC), the Integral Backstepping-Based Real-Twisting Algorithm (IBRTA), and Feed-Back Linearization (FBL). These algorithms are designed to handle the nonlinear dynamics and aerodynamic uncertainties associated with offshore wind turbines. Given the practical limitations in acquiring accurate nonlinear terms and aerodynamic forces, our approach focuses on ensuring the adaptability and robustness of the control algorithms under varying operational conditions. The proposed strategies are rigorously evaluated through MATLAB/Simulink 2024 A simulations across multiple wind speed scenarios. Our comparative analysis demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed methods in optimizing power extraction under diverse conditions, contributing to the advancement of MPPT techniques for offshore wind energy systems. Fin-stabilized guided rockets exhibit ballistic characteristics such as low initial velocity, high flight altitude, and long flight duration, which render their impact point accuracy and flight stability highly susceptible to the influence of wind. In this paper, the four-dimensional nonlinear angular motion equations describing the changes in attack angle and the law of axis swing of a dual-spin rocket are established, and the phase trajectory and equilibrium point stability characteristics of the nonlinear angular motion system under windy conditions are analyzed. Aiming at the problem that the equilibrium point of the angular motion system cannot be solved analytically with the change in wind speed, a phase trajectory projection sequence method based on the Poincaré cross-section and stroboscopic mapping is proposed to analyze the effect of wind on the angular motion bifurcation characteristics of a dual-spin rocket. The possible instability of angular motion caused by nonlinear aerodynamics under strong wind conditions is explored. This study is of reference significance for the launch control and aerodynamic design of guided rockets in complex environments. Full article

This paper aims to analyze the performance of a tilt-rotor fixed-wing RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) using a segmented approach, focusing on a nominal mission for SAR (Search and Rescue) applications. The study employs optimization techniques tailored to each segment to meet power consumption requirements, and the results highlight the accuracy of the physical characterization, which incorporates nonlinear propulsive and aerodynamic models derived from wind tunnel test campaigns. Critical segments for this nominal mission, such as the vertical take off or the transition from vertical to horizontal flight regimes, are addressed to fully understand the performance response of the aircraft. The proposed framework integrates experimental models into trajectory optimization procedures for each segment, enabling a realistic and modular analysis of energy use and aerodynamic performance. This approach provides valuable insights for both flight control design and future sizing iterations of convertible UAVs (Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles). Full article

This study examines the performance of two diffuser configurations—a trumpet-shaped and a semi-diagonal design—for application in micro gas turbine engines, aiming to assess their suitability in terms of efficiency and operational flexibility. Both diffusers were initially evaluated using steady-state CFD simulations with the k-omega SST turbulence model, followed by experimental testing on an actual engine across the start-up sequence from idle to 70% of nominal speed. Performance was mapped over four constant-speed lines for each configuration. Results showed that the trumpet-shaped diffuser offered a greater choke margin but suffered from increased aerodynamic losses, whereas the semi-diagonal diffuser demonstrated higher efficiency but required closer alignment with the target operating point. The k-omega SST model showed strong predictive accuracy, with 5.13% agreement across all instrumented parameters for all investigated speed lines. These findings suggest that while the trumpet diffuser provides better stability, the semi-diagonal design is more efficient when properly targeted. Future work will focus on extending the analysis to higher speed ranges and transient regimes using harmonic balance CFD methods and enhanced data acquisition techniques. Full article

To enhance the survivability of armed helicopters in high-threat environments, integrated infrared (IR) suppressors are increasingly adopted to reduce thermal signatures. However, such integration significantly alters the exhaust flow field, which may in turn affect both the infrared and acoustic characteristics of the helicopter. This study investigates the aerodynamic, infrared, and acoustic impacts of an integrated IR suppressor through the comparative analysis of two helicopter configurations: a conventional design and a design equipped with an integrated IR suppressor. Full-scale models are used to analyze flow field and IR radiation characteristics, while scaled models are employed for aeroacoustic simulations. The results show that although the integrated IR suppressor increases flow resistance and reduces entrainment performance within the exhaust mixing duct, it significantly improves the thermal dissipation efficiency of the exhaust plume. The infrared radiation analysis reveals that the integrated suppressor effectively reduces radiation intensity in both the 3~5 μm and 8~14 μm bands, especially under cruise conditions where the exhaust is more efficiently cooled by ambient airflow. Equivalent radiation temperatures calculated along principal axes confirm lower IR signatures for the integrated configuration. Preliminary acoustic analyses suggest that the slit-type nozzle and integrated suppressor layout may also offer potential benefits in jet noise reduction. Overall, the integrated IR suppressor provides a clear advantage in lowering the infrared observability of armed helicopters, with acceptable aerodynamic and acoustic trade-offs. These findings offer valuable guidance for the future development of low-observable helicopter platforms. Full article

Creating a comfortable microclimate in the premises of buildings is currently becoming one of the priorities in the field of architecture, construction and engineering systems. The increased attention from the scientific community to this topic is due not only to the desire to ensure healthy and favorable conditions for human life but also to the need for the rational use of energy resources. This area is becoming particularly relevant in the context of global challenges related to climate change, rising energy costs and increased environmental requirements. Practice shows that any technical solutions to ensure comfortable temperature, humidity and air exchange in rooms should be closely linked to the concept of energy efficiency. This allows one not only to reduce operating costs but also to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to sustainable development and environmental safety. In this connection, this study presents a parametric assessment of the influence of climatic and geometric factors on the aerodynamic characteristics of the air cavity, which affect the heat exchange process in the ventilated layer of curtain wall systems. The assessment was carried out using a combined analytical calculation method that provides averaged thermophysical parameters, such as mean air velocity (Vs), average internal surface temperature (tin.sav), and convective heat transfer coefficient (αs) within the air cavity. This study resulted in empirical average values, demonstrating that the air velocity within the cavity significantly depends on atmospheric pressure and façade height difference. For instance, a 10-fold increase in façade height leads to a 4.4-fold increase in air velocity. Furthermore, a three-fold variation in local resistance coefficients results in up to a two-fold change in airflow velocity. The cavity thickness, depending on atmospheric pressure, was also found to affect airflow velocity by up to 25%. Similar patterns were observed under ambient temperatures of +20 °C, +30 °C, and +40 °C. The analysis confirmed that airflow velocity is directly affected by cavity height, while the impact of solar radiation is negligible. However, based on the outcomes of the analytical model, it was concluded that the method does not adequately account for the effects of solar radiation and vertical temperature gradients on airflow within ventilated façades. This highlights the need for further full-scale experimental investigations under hot climate conditions in South Kazakhstan. The findings are expected to be applicable internationally to regions with comparable climatic characteristics. Ultimately, a correct understanding of thermophysical processes in such structures will support the advancement of trends such as Lightweight Design, Functionally Graded Design, and Value Engineering in the development of curtain wall systems, through the optimized selection of façade configurations, accounting for temperature loads under specific climatic and design conditions. This paper presents a CFD-based method for the aerodynamic design of a high-pressure compressor rotor blisk, taking into account manufacturing constraints. Focus is placed on the influence of geometric deviations caused by the dynamic constraints of the milling machine. Special attention is given to the leading edge region of the blade, where high curvature results in increased sensitivity in both aerodynamic behavior and manufacturability. The generic blisk geometry on which this study is based is characterized by an elliptical leading edge. For the optimization, the leading edge is described by Bézier curves that transition smoothly to the suction and pressure sides with continuous curvature and a non-dimensional length ratio. In steady-state RANS parameter studies, the length ratio is systematically varied while the chord length is kept constant. For the aerodynamic evaluation of the design’s key performance parameters such as blade pressure distribution, total pressure loss and compressor efficiency are considered. To evaluate the machine dynamics for a given design, compliance with the nominal feed rate and the deviation between the planned and actual tool tip positions were used as evaluation parameters. Compared to the reference geometry with an elliptical leading edge, the purely aerodynamic optimization achieved an isentropic efficiency improvement of +0.24 percentage points in the aerodynamic design point and a profile deviation improvement of 3 µm in the 99th quantile. The interdisciplinary optimization achieved an improvement of +0.20 percentage points and 30 µm, respectively. The tandem tilt-wing UAV features an advanced aerodynamic layout design and is regarded as a solution for small-scale urban air mobility. However, the tandem wing configuration exhibits complex aerodynamic interactions between the front and rear wings during cruise flight and the wing tilt transition process. The objective of this paper is to investigate the aerodynamic coupling characteristics between the front and rear wings of the tandem tilt-wing UAV under level flight and tilt transition conditions while also assessing the influence of the propellers on the aircraft’s aerodynamic performance. Through CFD numerical analysis, the aerodynamic characteristics of various aircraft components are examined at different angles of attack and wing tilt angles, and the underlying reasons for the observed differences and variations are explored. The results indicate that, during level flight, the aerodynamic interference between the wings is primarily dominated by the detrimental influence of the front wing on the rear wing. During the tilt transition process, mutual interactions between the front and rear wings occur as wing tilt angle changes, leading to more drastic variations in lift coefficients and increased control difficulty. However, the propeller’s effect contributes to smoother changes in lift and drag, thereby enhancing aircraft stability. Full article

With the advancement of modern fan architectures, dedicated experimental benchmarks are becoming fundamental to improving the knowledge of flow physics, validating novel CFD methods, and fine-tuning existing methods. In this context the open test case ECL5/CATANA, representative of a modern Ultra High Bypass Ratio (UHBR) architecture, has been designed and experimentally investigated at École Centrale de Lyon (ECL) in a novel test facility with multi-physical instrumentation, providing a large database of high-quality aerodynamic and aeromechanic measurements. In this paper, a thorough numerical study of the fan stage aerodynamics was performed using the CFD TRAF code developed at the University of Florence. Fan stage performance was studied at design speed over the entire operating range. The results were discussed and compared with datasets provided by ECL. Detailed sensitivity on numerical schemes and state-of-the-art turbulence/transition models allowed for the selection of the best numerical setup to perform UHBR fan simulations. Moreover, to have a deeper understanding of the fan stall margin, unsteady simulations were also carried out. The results showed the appearance of blade tip instability, precursor of a rotating stall condition, which may generate non-synchronous blade vibrations. Full article
