Despite the endangered status of the Oriental Stork (Ciconia boyciana) on the IUCN Red List, a critical lack of contemporary mitochondrial genomic data from its core distribution areas in mainland China has hindered our understanding of the species’ long-term evolutionary stability and spatiotemporal variation. This study addresses this gap by sequencing and assembling the complete mitogenome (17,608 bp) of a contemporary individual from Hongze Lake, Jiangsu (PX682155), and conducting a rigorous comparative analysis against a historical reference sequence published 25 years ago in Japan (NC_002196). Our results demonstrate striking structural and functional conservation across a quarter-century span; the 13 protein-coding genes exhibit highly synchronized gene arrangements, base composition biases, and Relative Synonymous Codon Usage (RSCU) patterns, indicative of stringent purifying selection maintaining oxidative phosphorylation efficiency. While phylogenetic analysis reinforces its sister-group relationship with the White Stork (C. ciconia), significant length polymorphisms were identified within the D-loop control region, primarily driven by microsatellite repeat variations. These findings provide a vital genomic benchmark for mainland populations, offering high-resolution molecular markers essential for future large-scale assessments of geographic isolation and the refinement of targeted conservation strategies for this flagship wetland species. Expanded and intensified agriculture is a major driver of habitat loss for endangered species such as the Oriental White Stork (Ciconia boyciana), making wildlife-friendly farming an increasingly important approach for reconciling biodiversity conservation with agricultural development. Building on a 2018 feasibility study in the Sanjiang Plain, this research employs a choice experiment to examine how preferences for Oriental White Stork-friendly farming have evolved among urban consumers and residents of stork habitats under expanding green consumption and increasing experience with environmentally friendly farming. The results reveal pronounced preference heterogeneity and persistent cognitive separation between wildlife conservation and agricultural production, particularly among urban consumers, despite a stable group being willing to pay a premium for stork-friendly products. Rural residents’ decisions remain largely economically driven, though younger farmers with prior experience in environmentally friendly practices show more positive attitudes. Significant urban–rural differences suggest policy complementarities, whereby price-oriented incentives may encourage price-sensitive farmers to adopt green agriculture, while intrinsically motivated farmers require support through an Oriental White Stork-oriented value chain. Overall, the findings demonstrate that Wildlife-Friendly Farming cannot be effectively promoted through a one-size-fits-all approach; instead, stratified, group-specific policy and market mechanisms are essential for aligning producer incentives with consumer demand and supporting the long-term viability of biodiversity-friendly agricultural systems. Sympatric species are closely related taxa that coexist within the same habitat through niche partitioning, and kingfishers serve as an ideal group for studying such ecological mechanisms. The present study examined the perch height in relation to foraging behaviour and hunting success of five kingfisher species: Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis), Pied Kingfisher (Ceryle rudis), Stork-billed Kingfisher (Pelargopsis capensis), and Black-capped Kingfisher (Halcyon pileata). The study was conducted between 2021 and 2023, across seven habitat types in Kerala, India (Kadalundi–Vallikkunnu Community Reserve (KVCR) mangroves, Kallampara mangroves, Vadakkumpad mangroves, Vazhakkad agroecosystem, Mavoor wetland, Sanketham wetland, and Elathur beach). A generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) with a binomial distribution and logit link function was used to analyze hunting success across species. The model indicated that the effect of perch height on hunting success varied among species, though neither perch height nor species identity alone had a significant effect. Most species favored mid-height perches (2–5 m) for foraging, with the Common Kingfisher exhibiting moderate success across all heights and habitats. The Pied Kingfisher showed significantly reduced success at higher perches, while the Stork-billed Kingfisher achieved the highest success at mid-heights (2–5 m). The White-throated Kingfisher showed a non-significant negative association with capture success, whereas the Black-capped Kingfisher exhibited a neutral to positive relationship across perch heights. Among all variables tested, prey availability emerged as the sole significant predictor of hunting success, indicating that prey abundance is the principal determinant of foraging efficiency in tropical wetlands, rather than environmental conditions. Our findings confirm a pattern of vertical stratification in resource partitioning among sympatric kingfisher species and underscore the importance of conserving habitats that retain natural perch sites of varying heights. Landfills represent increasingly common anthropogenic habitats that provide food resources but also expose wildlife to complex chemical mixtures. White Storks (Ciconia ciconia) have recently expanded breeding near such sites, yet little is known about the physiological consequences of landfill dependence across time. In 2025, we assessed biomarker responses in White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) nestlings from the Jakuševec landfill (Zagreb, Croatia), a post-remediated site still in partial operation, three years after the initial studies conducted in 2021 and 2022. Activities of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterase (CES), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR), as well as levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), were quantified in extracellular (plasma) and intracellular (post-mitochondrial S9) blood fractions. Neurotoxicity biomarkers (AChE, CES) showed small increases in 2022, followed by significant declines in 2025, indicating potential changes in exposure to neuroactive compounds. Oxidative-stress biomarkers displayed contrasting patterns: GST and GR decreased progressively, whereas ROS rose and GSH shifted in opposite directions between fractions, together suggesting rising oxidative challenge and altered redox balance. The combined biomarker response suggests continuing low-level exposure to neurotoxic and redox-active compounds despite landfill remediation. Our findings highlight that urban landfills, even in post-closure phases, remain physiologically active systems influencing wildlife health and should be incorporated into long-term ecotoxicological and conservation monitoring frameworks. While independent long-term monitoring shows that the Jakuševec White Stork colony has continued to grow over the past decade, the physiological responses detected in nestlings highlight the importance of assessing how chronic low-level exposure might influence population health in the long term. Environmental stressors, particularly agricultural pesticides, can influence both growth and physiology in developing birds, yet the relationship between morphometric condition indices and biochemical biomarkers remains poorly understood. We investigated body mass, beak length, tarsus length, and body condition index (BCI) alongside plasma and S9 biomarkers, including the activities of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterase (CES), and glutathione S-transferase (GST), as well as the levels of glutathione (GSH) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in nestling White Storks (Ciconia ciconia) from Croatia. Bayesian undirected graphical model (BUGM) inferred a disconnected correlation structure composed of two communities, with a strong beak length–GSH association. Biomarkers further exhibited plasma-specific affinity: plasma markers reflected short-term adjustments, whereas S9 enzymes represented distinct metabolic pathways. Overall, morphometry and physiological status showed only limited integration, restricted mainly to plasma biomarkers, and residual body condition index did not serve as a reliable proxy for physiological stress. We conclude that integrated monitoring approaches, combining morphometric and biochemical profiling, provide a more nuanced assessment of nestling condition and strengthen the use of White Storks as sentinels of agroecosystem health. Wetlands play a vital role in conserving waterbirds, particularly along major European river systems such as the Danube River and its tributaries. To promote the importance of wetlands and address the lack of data on bird biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems, this study was conducted to assess the baseline status of a demonstration site within the European project DaWetRest. The research focused on a lesser-studied pilot area, the Danube North of Kopački rit, near the village of Draž, located in the tri-border region of Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia. Systematic ornithological monitoring was carried out monthly from January to December 2024 across three monitoring areas (total transect length: 4200 m). A total of 26 bird taxa were recorded, comprising 2148 individual observations. The most dominant species were the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), and Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo). Conversely, the species that were the least present were White Stork (Ciconia ciconia), Squacco Heron (Ardeola ralloides), Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca), and Black Stork (Ciconia nigra). This study also examines the seasonal dynamics of waterbirds, providing essential baseline data for evaluating the effectiveness of upcoming restoration measures planned for the area. Full article

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a threat to human, animal, and environmental health. This study evaluated the potential role of birds as AMR dispersers in white storks as a model species investigating dispersal between locations connected by their movements. Throughout a year, 346 samples were collected from two landfills (225 fecal samples) and two wetlands (93 fecal/28 water samples) based on satellite tracking data that confirmed continuous stork movements between foraging (landfill) and nighttime roosting (wetlands) locations. Samples were seeded in selective media with antibiotics for the isolation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. A total of 313 isolates from 35 different bacterial species were obtained, with an AMR prevalence of 43.1% in fecal samples from landfills, 7.5% in fecal samples from wetlands, and 21.4% in water from wetlands. Multidrug resistant bacteria were only found in fecal samples (19.6% landfills/4.3% wetlands) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing-bacteria were found exclusively in fecal samples from landfills with a marked presence during the fall migration period. Our study reveals marked differences in AMR prevalence and resistance phenotypes between study locations and fecal and water samples throughout the year, thus not supporting a clear role of storks as AMR dispersers. Nevertheless, similar changes in AMR phenotype prevalences during fall migration in stork faecal samples from one of the tested landfills and its paired wetland, and the significant increase in ESBL-producing Enterobacterales prevalence matching the arrival of migratory white storks in fall, underline the need for more in-depth genome-based studies to elucidate the role of white storks as dispersers or sentinels of AMR. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an increasing threat to public health, with wildlife recognized as reservoirs and vectors of resistant bacteria. However, the role of wild species in the ecology of AMR remains insufficiently understood, highlighting the need to investigate resistant bacteria in these animals. This study focused on detecting and characterizing Escherichia coli obtained from 43 fecal samples of white storks (Ciconia ciconia), cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis), and European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) admitted to a wildlife rehabilitation center in Portugal. Resistance profiles to twelve antibiotics and six virulence factors were characterized phenotypically. ESBL production was also tested. A total of 79 E. coli isolates were obtained from 39 out of 43 samples, and 75 were selected for further characterization. All isolates tested negative for ESBL production. Approximately 64% (n = 48/75) of isolates were resistant to at least one antibiotic, and 5.3% (n = 4/75) were multidrug-resistant. Most frequent resistances were to ampicillin (36%, n = 27/75), tetracycline (12%, n = 9/75), and chloramphenicol (8%), while all isolates were susceptible to meropenem, aztreonam, and third-generation cephalosporins. Most isolates (81.3%, n = 61/75) lacked virulence factors. These findings suggest that wildlife may act as a reservoir of resistant strains, emphasizing importance of AMR monitoring and the One Health approach. Full article

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly due to extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases (CPs), poses a critical threat to global health. This study aimed to characterize the molecular epidemiology, resistance profiles, and genomic features of ESBL- and CP-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonaie (ESBL/CP-Ec/Kp) isolates from a Spanish hospital (2020–2024) and explore links to environmental reservoirs like white storks foraging at a nearby landfill. A total of 121 clinical Ec/Kp isolates (55 ESBL-Ec, 1 CP-Ec, 35 ESBL-Kp, 17 CP-Kp, 13 ESBL+CP-Kp) underwent phenotypic testing, PCR, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Analyses included phylogenomics (cgMLST), detection of AMR genes, plasmid typing, and comparative genomics. Among ESBL-Ec, blaCTX-M-15 was the most prevalent (60.0%), and one CP-Ec carrying blaNDM-5 was identified. WGS of 44 selected ESBL/CP-Ec isolates revealed a variety of AMR genes, and 56.8% of isolates carried class one integrons (56.8%). IncF-type plasmids predominated, and 84.1% of isolates were assigned as ExPEC/UPEC. The lineage ST131 dominated (75%), with IncF-blaCTX-M-15-carrying plasmids. Among the 18 ESBL/CP-Kp isolates sequenced, the lineage ST307 was the most frequent (44.4%), followed by ST15 and ST11, carrying a diversity of AMR determinants and plasmids (IncFIB(K), IncL, ColpVC). Virulence included ybt loci in ICEKp; hypervirulence genes were absent. Genomic analysis of 62 clinical isolates (44 Ec, 18 Kp) showed close phylogenetic links to stork-derived strains, with ST131-Ec and ST307-Kp from humans and birds differing just by ≤22 and ≤10 ADs, respectively, with a conserved plasmid content (i.e., IncL-blaOXA-48, IncFIB(K)-blaCTX-M-15). High-risk ESBL/CP-Ec/Kp clones persist across clinical and environmental contexts. WGS-based surveillance is key for understanding AMR spread and guiding interventions. Results support a One Health approach to combat AMR through cross-sector collaboration. Full article

Flight is part of the natural behaviours of most bird species, and as a consequence, flight restraint in zoos, even for those species that are primarily ground-dwelling, encounters increasing animal welfare concerns. While previous studies on greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) and white pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) have found no significant effects of flight restraint on welfare, scientific data on other species remains limited. This study investigated the welfare implications of flight restraint in white storks (Ciconia ciconia) by assessing feather corticosterone concentrations (CORTf) alongside behavioural observations. We compared CORTf values of deflighted zoo birds (n = 53) and hand-reared abandoned nestlings (n = 11) from eleven different zoos in Germany and storks in rehabilitation. These birds were wild individuals, found injured, and therefore provided an opportunity to collect feather samples (n = 70). In line with the 3R principle proposed by Russell and Burch, we employed a recently validated, less invasive feather sampling method that involves cutting feathers close to the skin. We hypothesised that CORTf would differ significantly between the wild, airworthy storks and the deflighted individuals under human care. However, we found no significant difference in CORTf regarding the ability to fly, nor did the method of flight restraint show a significant influence on CORTf. Housing facilities with significant site-specific variations emerged as the predominant factor influencing feather corticosterone concentrations. These results suggest that flight restraint does not have a noticeable direct impact on the corticosterone levels of white storks, and the behavioural observations support the reliability of these findings. This study enhances our understanding of the effects of deflighting procedures on the welfare of white storks in zoos. Full article

Sexual dimorphism in bill morphology influences foraging strategies and bird competitive interactions. This study uses geometric morphometric analyses to examine sex-based differences in the bill shape and size of Ciconia ciconia, a large wading bird. Standardized dorsal and lateral photographs of 45 white storks (24 females and 21 males) were analyzed. The mean centroid size (CS) confirmed that males have significantly larger bills than females, yet principal component analysis revealed no reliable shape-based sex differentiation. Allometric analyses indicated that larger individuals exhibit more pronounced shape variations, likely tied to functional adaptations, though these were insufficient for sex determination. While bill size correlates with sex, shape variation does not serve as a reliable criterion for sexing C. ciconia. This study contributes to the understanding of sexual dimorphism in Ciconia ciconia by quantifying bill size differences using geometric morphometrics. Full article

Assessing the Use of 3D-Model Prostheses in White Storks: A Promising Method in Rehabilitation of Injured Wildlife

Wildlife Rehabilitation Centres emerged with the purpose of recovering individuals, as a tool for environmental education and monitoring the balance of ecosystems. The White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) is one of the many species that are admitted to rehabilitation centres all around the world, due to traumatic amputations. This work presents the development of 3D-printed orthopedic prostheses aimed at partially restoring biomechanical function and enabling the reintegration of amputated birds into their natural habitat. Conducted at the Green Balkans Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center in Bulgaria, three prosthetic prototypes were created using epoxy resin, polylactic acid (PLA), and polyamide, based on detailed anatomical measurements. The process involved 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD), biomechanical analysis, and performance evaluation, focusing on locomotion, feeding, and flight. Results showed improved prosthetic efficacy, with birds adapting within 1–5 days, resuming normal behaviours, and regaining flight. Of the 12 birds analyzed, 3 were released into the wild, with 1 tracked via GPS, marking the first documented case of an amputated bird with a prosthesis monitored post-release, covering over 470 km in 15 days. This study highlights the potential of 3D printing in conservation medicine, offering alternatives to euthanasia and open new perspectives in the global context of biodiversity preservation. Species-Specific Effects of a Sound Prototype to Reduce Bird Use of Powerline Poles

Powerlines pose a significant threat to many bird species, impacting their conservation. Current research focuses on developing methods to mitigate bird mortality due to electrocution and collisions with powerlines. In this study, we designed a sound prototype to be installed on infrastructure poles, including powerlines, aiming to reduce their use by birds. We conducted bird surveys over 47 days, from February to May 2020, in five light poles: the central pole where the device was installed (0 m), two poles at 25 m, and two poles at 50 m from the central pole. The first 10 days served as a control period with the deterrent device switched off, followed by 37 days with the device switched on. In total, we recorded 1945 bird observations, of which 1569 occurred with the device on. The device was triggered by bird movements, resulting in 588 reactions to sound. When activated, 10.6% of large- and medium-sized birds were flushed from the surveyed poles: 2.6% were already perched and flushed due to the sound, 3.9% were prevented from perching, and 4.1% were flushed after perching, thereby reducing the risk of electrocution. Among the birds perching or approaching the pole where the device was installed, 25% were deterred by the sound. The black kite, Milvus migrans, was the most reactive species to the device (54.3% flushed at 0 m, and 8.8% flushed at 25 and 50 m), while the white stork, Ciconia ciconia, showed the least sensitivity to the disturbances (14.4% flushed at 0 m, and 2.7% flushed at 25 and 50 m). The corvids exhibited a response rate between the other two species (33.3% flushed at 0 m, and 6.8% flushed at 25 and 50 m). We identified significant limitations to this prototype and proposed recommendations to improve its efficiency. Full article

Wild birds across the globe can carry the causative agent of avian borreliosis, Borrelia anserina, and that of human Lyme borreliosis, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in the ticks attached to them. Currently, only limited proof exists for the presence of these pathogens in samples taken from living wild birds, carried by the birds as a reservoir, without symptoms. We investigated blood samples of large-bodied wild birds admitted to a bird hospital, where basic clinical symptoms were recorded. Thirty-six blood samples were collected from them, according to the DualDur kit methodology, and investigated using dark-field microscopy to search for spirochetes. Five of the samples were also investigated by immunofluorescence microscopy to identify Borrelia burgdorferi. Since the main reason for admittance to the hospital was a physical injury, no significant symptoms were observed regarding a current Borrelia infection. Out of the sixteen birds of prey, eleven (68%) were infected with spirochetes, and fifteen out of twenty storks (75%) were also infected with spirochetes, without major symptoms. All five samples investigated using immunofluorescence were confirmed to contain the human pathogenic Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. Thus, direct investigations of the blood of wild birds may show the asymptomatic prevalence of Borrelia in the wild bird population. Full article

Land cover is one of the spatial factors influencing the ecological niche of animal populations. Some types of land cover predetermine a particular site as a habitat for certain species. One of the flagship species of agrocenosis is the white stork (Ciconia ciconia (L.)). This study focuses on the occupancy of 122 nests in the vicinity of Kampinos National Park in Poland. This area is a mixture of traditional agricultural settlements, forests, the Vistula valley, and the suburbs of Warsaw, Poland. This mix allows for the identification of land cover disturbances that affect the white stork’s nest occupancy. The current state of development and the efficiency of remote sensing-based land cover databases allows us to easily identify spatial factors affecting nest occupancy and to analyse them in a longer timeframe. The study analyses land cover in buffers of 1 to 5 km around white stork nests based on CORINE Land Cover (CLC) for the years 2006, 2012, and 2018. Although the white stork’s habitat is well studied, the CLC-based results provide significant new insights. The results show that nest occupancy increases with an increasing proportion of agricultural land, especially with significant natural vegetation, while the proportion of wetlands and water is not significant. This work provides a description of the ideal habitat for the white stork in terms of nest occupancy. Full article
