This study examined the effects of calcium, magnesium, and potassium ion concentrations on Strongylocentrotus intermedius through seven experimental rearing groups: two calcium ion levels (550 mg/L and 733 mg/L), two magnesium ion levels (1727 mg/L and 2302 mg/L), two potassium ion levels (533 mg/L and 710 mg/L), and a control. After 45 days of cultivation, 733 mg/L of calcium ions significantly reduced the S. intermedius survival rate, while 550 mg/L of calcium ions had no significant adverse effects on survival, growth (SGR), the feed conversion ratio (FCR), gonad colour, or immune enzyme activity, and it significantly increased the gonad index (GI). Meanwhile, 2302 mg/L of magnesium ions caused 100% mortality within 2 days, and 1727 mg/L of magnesium ions significantly reduced the survival rate and SGR while increasing the FCR. Additionally, 710 mg/L of potassium ions had no significant impact on the survival rate but significantly reduced SGR, the GI, and gonad colour while increasing the FCR, whereas 533 mg/L of potassium ions showed no significant adverse effects on survival, SGR, the FCR, gonad colour, digestive enzyme activity, or immune enzyme activity. The study results indicate that when formulating artificial seawater using source water with elevated calcium, magnesium, and potassium ion concentrations for S. intermedius aquaculture, calcium ions under 550 mg/L and potassium ions under 533 mg/L are biologically acceptable. However, magnesium ions require adjustment to a narrow optimal range to ensure survival and physiological performance. Full article

Using light-emitting diodes (LEDs), we examined how different light wavelengths influence the hypersensitive response (HR) in tobacco plants infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst). Pst-infiltrated plants exhibited greater resistance to Pst infection under green and blue light compared to white and red light, as indicated by reduced HR-associated programmed cell death, lower H2O2 production, and up to 64% reduction in membrane damage. During the late stage of HR, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities peaked under green and blue LEDs, with 5- and 10-fold increases, respectively, while superoxide dismutase activity was higher under white and red LEDs. Defense-related genes CHS1, PALa, PR1, and PR2 were more strongly induced by white and red light. The plants treated with green or blue LEDs during Pst infection prompted faster degradation of phototoxic Mg-porphyrins and exhibited smaller declines in Fv/Fm, electron transport rate, chlorophyll content, and LHCB expression compared to those treated with white or red LEDs. By contrast, the induction of the chlorophyll catabolic gene SGR was 54% and 77% lower in green and blue LEDs, respectively, compared to white LEDs. This study demonstrates that light quality differentially affects Pst-mediated HR, with green and blue light more effectively suppressing HR progression, mainly by reducing oxidative stress through enhanced antioxidative capacity and mitigation of photosynthetic impairments. Background/Objectives: This study explores the perspectives of mental health professionals on tailoring the Mentis Plus intervention to enhance positive mental health (PMH) in individuals experiencing First-Episode Psychosis (FEP). Although the Mentis Plus Program has been previously implemented in other contexts, it has not yet been applied to FEP care. Therefore, this study aimed to adapt the intervention for future implementation through expert consultation. Methods: A qualitative exploratory-descriptive design was employed. Data were collected via three focus groups comprising multidisciplinary professionals experienced in FEP care. Qualitative content analysis was used to examine the data. Results: Participants viewed the tailored Mentis Plus intervention as a valuable, recovery-oriented tool. Key recommendations included a flexible, group-based format with eight weekly sessions. Suggested intervention components encompassed gratitude journaling, emotional regulation techniques, and collaborative problem-solving exercises. Group delivery was highlighted as essential for mitigating isolation and promoting peer support. Practical implementation strategies included phased session structures and routine emotional check-ins. Identified barriers to implementation included the need for specialized training, limited therapeutic spaces, and the heterogeneity of participant needs. Facilitators included a person-centered approach, institutional backing, and sufficient resources. Conclusions: The findings support the feasibility and clinical relevance of a tailored Mentis Plus FEP Program—Brief Version. Expert-informed insights provide a foundation for adapting mental health interventions to early-psychosis care and inform future research and implementation strategies. Full article

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), with their high absorption and antioxidant properties, hold promise as feed additives in aquaculture, enhancing growth and reproductive health in fish. This review evaluates how selenium nanoparticles influence growth and reproductive traits in Asian seabass (L. calcarifer). Using the PRISMA approach, we examined the impacts of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) on the growth performance and gonadal development of Asian seabass (L. calcarifer) by synthesizing findings from the existing literature. Meta-analysis explored that selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) supplementation significantly improved specific growth rate (SGR) (pooled effect size = 3.97; 95% CI: 3.68–4.26) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (pooled effect size = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.75–0.86), with low heterogeneity. Regarding reproductive outcomes, SeNPs enhanced gonadal development, sperm quality, and steroidogenesis. Significant improvements were observed in gonadosomatic index (effect size = 0.5), fertilization rate (0.6), and testosterone levels (0.5), along with a reduction in abnormal embryogenesis (−0.3) (p < 0.05). While an optimal level of SeNPs is effective for enhancing aquaculture performance, excessive use may lead to toxicity; therefore, their economic viability, environmental impact, and sustainability in large-scale aquaculture warrant further investigation. This review provides insights for researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders on the potential of SeNPs in advancing sustainable aquaculture through fish productivity and reproductive performance. In the global energy sector, water-bearing reservoir-typed gas storage accounts for about 30% of underground gas storage (UGS) reservoirs and is vital for natural gas storage, balancing gas consumption, and ensuring energy supply stability. However, when constructing the UGS in the M gas reservoir, selecting suitable areas poses a challenge due to the complicated gas–water distribution in the multi-layered water-bearing gas reservoir with a long production history. To address this issue and enhance energy storage efficiency, this study presents an integrated geomechanical-hydraulic assessment framework for choosing optimal UGS construction horizons in multi-layered water-bearing gas reservoirs. The horizons and sub-layers of the gas reservoir have been quantitatively assessed to filter out the favorable areas, considering both aspects of geological characteristics and production dynamics. Geologically, caprock-sealing capacity was assessed via rock properties, Shale Gouge Ratio (SGR), and transect breakthrough pressure. Dynamically, water invasion characteristics and the water–gas distribution pattern were analyzed. Based on both geological and dynamic assessment results, the favorable layers for UGS construction were selected. Then, a compositional numerical model was established to digitally simulate and validate the feasibility of constructing and operating the M UGS in the target layers. The results indicated the following: (1) The selected area has an SGR greater than 50%, and the caprock has a continuous lateral distribution with a thickness range from 53 to 78 m and a permeability of less than 0.05 mD. Within the operational pressure ranging from 8 MPa to 12.8 MPa, the mechanical properties of the caprock shale had no obvious changes after 1000 fatigue cycles, which demonstrated the good sealing capacity of the caprock. (2) The main water-producing formations were identified, and the sub-layers with inactive edge water and low levels of water intrusion were selected. After the comprehensive analysis, the I-2 and I-6 sub-layer in the M 8 block and M 14 block were selected as the target layers. The numerical simulation results indicated an effective working gas volume of 263 million cubic meters, demonstrating the significant potential of these layers for UGS construction and their positive impact on energy storage capacity and supply stability. Synthetic flavors from standardized processes have recently emerged as a promising and sustainable alternative to traditional feed attractants. In this study, two attractive (F25, cheese; F35, caramel) and one repulsive (F32-, coconut) synthetic flavors were individually added (1% w/w) to a commercial diet for European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and tested over a 90-day feeding trial (30 fish per tank, in triplicate; initial weight 72.48 ± 8.04 g) to assess their impact on fish growth performance, welfare, and the modulation of brain appetite and monoaminergic pathways. None of the tested flavors negatively affected overall fish health. The F35 flavor enhanced feed intake (90.1 ± 5.6%) and growth (SGR 2.2 ± 0.2%) and positively influenced appetite-related and monoaminergic signals, thus being more effective than the F25 one (80.4 ± 3.2 and 1.6 ± 0.1%, respectively). A weekly feeding rotation between F35 and F25 (ROT group) resulted in suboptimal outcomes compared to F35 administration alone. The F32- flavor was not clearly perceived as strongly aversive by seabass and did not impair zootechnical performance. These findings highlight the potential of attractive synthetic flavors to improve diet palatability in a carnivorous species of commercial value, offering novel insights for more sustainable and cost-effective aquaculture feeding strategies. Background: SARS-CoV-2 booster vaccination remains essential to prevent severe COVID-19, particularly in vulnerable populations such as older adults. This study evaluated the durability and dynamics of immune responses following booster vaccination(s) in >65-year-old individuals and examined their association with protection against new infections. Methods: Immune responses were evaluated at 3, 9, and 15 months post-booster, measuring SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG antibodies against spike [IgG(S)] and nucleocapsid [IgG(N)] proteins, neutralizing activity against the Omicron BA.2 variant, and cellular immunity. A subset of participants was tested before booster administration. Regression analyses examined the influence of clinical and immunological factors—including a bivalent fourth dose—on infection risk over time. Results: Booster vaccination significantly enhanced IgG(S) and neutralizing capacity, peaking at 3 months. Although a decline was observed by 9 months, responses remained above baseline. Individuals with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection exhibited higher IgG(S) levels and neutralizing titers, and significantly lower reinfection rates (15%), compared to uninfected individuals. A fourth vaccine dose further increased IgG(S) levels. While neutralizing capacity was not consistently enhanced by the fourth dose, recipients experienced a lower rate of new infections. Immune trajectory analyses revealed that breakthrough infections elicited strong humoral responses comparable to those seen in previously infected individuals, highlighting the role of hybrid immunity. Conclusions: In older adults, booster vaccination induces durable immune responses, with hybrid immunity offering enhanced protection. A fourth dose boosts antibody levels and reduces infection risk, supporting its use in this high-risk group. Continued monitoring is needed to determine the long-term effectiveness of boosters, particularly against emerging variants. Full article

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of three commercial diets for ornamental fish (BIOMAA Spiruflake® (T1), Tetra TetraMin Tropical Flakes® (T2), LOMAS tropical fish flakes® (T3)) compared to a balanced feed for trout (Silver Cup TM (T4)) on the growth, survival, digestive enzyme activity, and intestinal and liver morphology of guppy (Poecilia reticulata) fry after 31 days of feeding. The highest growth was in T2 (0.101 ± 0.004 g) and T4 (0.084 ± 0.008 g) (p < 0.05). Fish fed with T1, T2, and T4 presented the greatest total length. T4 (98 ± 2.828%) and T1 (96 ± 5.656%) had the highest survival. Fish fed with T2 and T4 showed the best growth index values (AWG, SGR, FCR). T4 showed greater alkaline protease, trypsin, and chymotrypsin activity and better in vitro digestibility. The fish fed the T4 diet had the lowest intestinal fold height and the smallest hepatocyte diameter. A cheaper aquaculture diet (T4) significantly improved guppy juvenile nutrition compared to ornamental feeds. Further research should focus on developing species-specific ornamental diets for enhanced fish welfare. Full article

To evaluate the effects of different organic selenium sources on rice field eel (Monopterus albus), four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were tested: a control (no supplement) and four diets each supplemented with 0.24 mg/kg selenium as diselenoacetic acid (Se1), diselenopropionic acid (Se2), diselenobutyric acid (Se3), or diselenodibutyric acid (Se4). Rice field eels (initial body weight 18.43 ± 0.03 g) were fed for 60 days. The Se1 group showed significantly higher WGR and SGR than the control. Whole-body crude protein was significantly increased in the Se3 and Se4 groups, while crude lipid content was significantly decreased in Se1, Se3, and Se4 groups. Selenium concentrations in the liver and kidney were highest in the Se2 group. Serum AST and ALT activities were decreased in Se4. In the Se4 group, intestinal CAT, T-SOD, and GSH-PX activities were enhanced, along with upregulation of Gpx8, CAT, Nrf2, and Keap1. Hepatic CAT and GSH-PX increased in Se2 and Se4, with Gpx8 upregulated in Se1. Intestinal lipase activity was significantly increased in Se2. At the phylum level, Proteobacteria predominated. At the genus level, Cetobacterium predominated. In summary, diselenoacetic acid enhanced growth, while diselenopropionic acid and diselenodibutyric acid improved antioxidant defense and intestinal health in rice field eel. Full article

This study examines the impact of the arginine/lysine ratio in feed on the growth, serum amino acids, arginine metabolism, and antioxidant capacity of juvenile largemouth bass (5.95 ± 0.02 g). Five isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets with varying arginine/lysine ratios were formulated and administered over an eight-week period. The results indicated that the treatments had no significant effect on protein efficiency ratio (PER), daily feed intake (DFI), or morphological indices of juvenile largemouth bass (p > 0.05). When the arginine/lysine ratio was 0.85 (2.25/2.65; 2.54/3.00), liver antioxidant capacity was maximized, and inflammatory factors were suppressed. Conversely, a ratio of 2.25/2.99 significantly reduced weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) in juvenile largemouth bass, inhibited arginase activity, and increased serum total nitric oxide synthase (T-NOS) activity. When lysine was in excess (2.25/2.99 group), elevating arginine content (2.54/3.00 group) enhanced growth, antioxidant, and immune performance. Analysis of glutathione metabolism and innate immune-related pathway revealed that an optimal arginine/lysine ratio mitigates inflammatory damage induced by oxidative stress. An arginine/lysine imbalance significantly elevated liver malondialdehyde (MDA) content while reducing total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities, and glutathione (GSH) content, thereby increasing the expression levels of inflammatory factors (IL1B, IL8, TGFB1, BAX). These findings demonstrate that an imbalance in arginine/lysine adversely affects the growth, metabolism, and antioxidant capacity of largemouth bass. When lysine is in excess, increasing the arginine content to achieve an arginine/lysine ratio of 0.85 alleviates the negative effects of antagonism, suggesting arginine supplementation may regulate oxidative damage caused by lysine excess. An 8-week trial was conducted to investigate the effects of choline on the growth of Chinese perch (85.57 ± 0.54 g) with dietary choline supplementation at 0 (P0), 400 (P1), 800 (P2), 1600 (P3), 3200 (P4), and 6400 mg/kg (P5). Protein efficiency ratio and protein retention value (PRV) were higher in the P1–P4 groups than in the P0 group (p < 0.05). Compared to the P0 group, weight gain rate and specific growth rate (SGR) increased in the P2 and P3 groups (p < 0.05). The orexigenic gene agrp expression level rose in the P2–P4 groups (p < 0.05). The expression level of the lipolysis-related gene hsl or pparα was elevated in the P2 and P4 groups (p < 0.05). Proteolysis-related gene (ampd, mafbx, and murf1) expressions decreased in the P1–P4 groups, while tor and gk gene expressions increased in the P2 and P3 groups (p < 0.05). Broken-line analysis indicated that the optimal choline supplementation level for Chinese perch is 788.38 mg/kg based on SGR and 851.04 mg/kg based on PRV. The results demonstrate that moderate dietary choline supplementation enhances growth performance by promoting glucose and lipid catabolism and inhibiting protein catabolism in Chinese perch. An appropriate protein content in the diet can effectively increase the growth rate, muscle quality, and environmental stress resistance of fish. In this study, juvenile Yellow River carp (51.56 ± 0.17 g) were fed isofat diets with different protein concentrations (22%, 25%, 28%, 31%, 34%, and 37%). The results showed that, compared with other protein content groups, when the protein content was 34%, the WGR, SGR, and FCR were significantly higher, while the FCR was significantly lower (p < 0.05). Among them, the SGR and FCR were positively correlated with the dietary protein content, with the regression equations being y1 = −32.208x2 + 21.897x − 1.4001 (R2 = 0.8622) and y2 = 97.027x2 − 68.428x + 13.269 (R2 = 0.9663), respectively. When x was 33.99% and 35.26%, the SGR and FCR had extreme values. The contents of CP, Lys, EAA, and EAA/TAA were significantly greater in the 34% protein group, reflecting muscle quality (p < 0.05). In addition, the activities of α-AMS, LPS, TPS, SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px were significantly greater in the 34% protein group (p < 0.05). Similarly, the relative expression levels of GH, IGF-I, TOR, 4EBP2, Rhag, Rhbg, and Rhcg1 were significantly greater in the 34% protein group compared to the other protein groups (p < 0.05). The above results indicated that when the protein content in the diet was 34%, it significantly improved the growth and stress resistance of juvenile Yellow River carp. Based on the nonlinear regression equations for the SGR and FCR, the optimal dietary protein content of juvenile Yellow River carp (51.56 ± 0.17 g) was determined to be 33.99–35.26%. Full article

A 7-week feeding trial was conducted with Nile tilapia juveniles with an average body weight of 143.5 ± 3.1 g in a cage system in order to test the effect of different feed additives on growth performance, antioxidant defense system, and immune status of fish. For this reason, experimental diets were formulated with inclusion of two different additives containing bioactive compounds, namely Nannochlorophsis gaditana in 3.5% (diet EXP-A) and black soldier fly larvae meal (diet EXP-I) in 3.5%, and compared with a diet supplemented with a mixture of two different commercial compounds (Yang and Syrena Boost) in 0.4% (diet EXP-S). As a negative control, a commercially available feed (Nongteng, Laos) for tilapia was selected. At the end of the feeding trial, production parameters and expression of genes related to the antioxidant defense system and innate immune response were studied. Furthermore, following the feeding, air exposure stress for 5 min was administered to the fish, and similar parameters were assessed. Results indicated that all diets promoted adequate fish growth (SGR 1.67–1.81 g day−1) and feed utilization (FCR 1.29–1.57 g g−1) with no significant (p < 0.05) differences in these parameters between the dietary fish groups. Expression of genes sod, cat, and gpx significantly increased in the liver samples of the EXP-A group at the end of feeding. Following air exposure, the EXP-A group maintained a significantly higher level of antioxidant-related gene expression compared to other treatments. Subsequently, gpx upregulation was observed in the EXP-S group in the post-stress stage compared to pre-stress. Based on our results, we recommend the inclusion of any of the tested additives at the evaluated doses to enhance the non-specific immune response of Nile tilapia. Additionally, Nannochloropsis gaditana at a 3.5% inclusion level can be used to further improve antioxidant defense capacity. Full article

This study systematically investigated two ecotypes of Ulva prolifera, the dominant species responsible for green tides in the Yellow Sea, classified as Subtype I (strain I08-1) and Subtype II (strain QD-7). Both subtypes produce positively phototactic biflagellate gametes with oval/pear-shaped morphology but exhibit distinct cellular dimensions. Subtype I gametes demonstrated significantly larger cell sizes, with long and short axes measuring 6.55 μm and 4.62 μm, respectively, compared to Subtype II’s dimensions of 6.46 μm (long axis) and 3.03 μm (short axis). Developmental analysis revealed striking morphological divergence at the 6-day germling stage: Subtype I attained an average length of 1301.14 μm, more than doubling Subtype II’s 562.25 μm. Superior growth kinetics were observed in Subtype I, exhibiting enhanced specific growth rates (SGRs) across multiple parameters—main stem length (8.58% vs. 3.55%), primary branch elongation (19.17% vs. 12.59%), main stem width expansion (17.29% vs. 5.00%), and biomass accumulation (41.90% vs. 40.96% fresh weight). Chlorophyll quantification confirmed significantly higher pigment content in Subtype I. Pre-co-culture photosynthetic profiling demonstrated Subtype I’s superior quantum efficiency (α = 0.077 vs. 0.045) with marked differences in regulated energy dissipation (YNPQ) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Post-co-culture physiological adaptation was evident in Subtype II, showing significant elevation of non-regulated energy dissipation quantum yield (YNO) and eventual surpassing of maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) compared to Subtype I. These findings establish that U. prolifera employs robust photoprotective and thermal adaptation strategies under natural photothermal conditions. Crucially, YNO-based analysis revealed Subtype II’s enhanced high-light protection mechanisms and superior adaptability to intense irradiance environments. This research elucidates ecotype-specific environmental adaptation mechanisms in U. prolifera, providing critical insights for optimizing green tide mitigation strategies and advancing ecological understanding of algal bloom dynamics. The ecological role and in situ feeding potential of Aurelia coerulea ephyrae remain poorly quantified. We conducted in situ chamber experiments in Geoje and Jaran Bay, Korea, to evaluate clearance rates, specific growth rate (SGR), and grazing carbon among ephyrae of different sizes and origins. Larger field-collected ephyrae had higher clearance rates (4.2 ± 0.8 mL ind−1 h−1) and grazing carbon (17.2 ± 1.0 μg C ind−1 d−1) than smaller individuals (1.6 ± 0.5 mL ind−1 h−1; 5.2 ± 1.1 μg C ind−1 d−1), though the differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Field-collected ephyrae exhibited significantly greater clearance (p < 0.05) and grazing carbon (p < 0.01) than laboratory-reared ephyrae, while laboratory-reared ephyrae had higher SGR (p < 0.01).Grazing efficiency did not differ significantly between groups (p > 0.05). SGR peaked at intermediate prey concentrations (0.189 ± 0.013 d−1, p < 0.05), with reduced growth at both lower and higher concentrations. These results indicate that in situ feeding and growth rates are lower than laboratory rates, and that early-stage predation by ephyrae is modulated by prey availability and environmental history. Such findings provide essential baseline data for predicting the bloom dynamics and ecological impacts of Aurelia in temperate coastal environments. Full article
