Landscape Ecological Risk Assessment of Peri-Urban Villages in the Yangtze River Delta Based on Ecosystem Service Values

The rapid urbanization process has accelerated the degradation of ecosystem services (ESs) in peri-urban rural areas of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), leading to increasing landscape ecological risks (LERs). Establishing a scientifically grounded landscape ecological risk assessment (LERA) system and corresponding control strategies is therefore imperative. Using rural areas of Jiangning District, Nanjing as a case study, this research proposes an optimized dual-dimensional coupling assessment framework that integrates ecosystem service value (ESV) and ecological risk probability. The spatiotemporal evolution of LER in 2000, 2010, and 2020 and its key driving factors were further studied by using spatial autocorrelation analysis and geodetector methods. The results show the following: (1) From 2000 to 2020, cultivated land remained dominant, but its proportion decreased by 10.87%, while construction land increased by 26.52%, with minimal changes in other land use types. (2) The total ESV increased by CNY 1.67 × 109, with regulating services accounting for over 82%, among which water bodies contributed the most. (3) LER showed an overall increasing trend, with medium- to highest-risk areas expanding by 55.37%, lowest-risk areas increasing by 10.10%, and lower-risk areas decreasing by 65.48%. (4) Key driving factors include landscape vulnerability, vegetation coverage, and ecological land connectivity, with the influence of distance to road becoming increasingly significant. This study reveals the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of LER in typical peri-urban villages. Based on the LERA results, combined with terrain features and ecological pressure intensity, the study area was divided into three ecological management zones: ecological conservation, ecological restoration, and ecological enhancement. Departure punctuality (KPI01) and ATFM slot adherence (KPI03) have been emphasized by the International Civil Aviation Organization as key performance indicators (KPIs) in the Global Air Navigation Plan. To address the inherent conflict between these two objectives in departure scheduling, a multi-objective optimization model is proposed that aims to simultaneously enhance departure punctuality, ATFM slot adherence, and taxiing efficiency. A simulated annealing algorithm based on a resource transmission mechanism was developed to solve the model effectively. Based on full-scale operational data from Nanjing Lukou International Airport in June 2023, the empirical results confirm the model’s effectiveness in two primary dimensions: (1) Significant improvement in taxiing efficiency: The average unimpeded taxi-out time was reduced by 6.4% (from 17.2 to 16.1 min). The number of flights with taxi-out times exceeding 30 min decreased by 58%. For representative taxi routes (e.g., stand 118 to runway 6), the excess taxi-out time was reduced by 82.3% (from 5.61 to 1.10 min). (2) Enhanced operational punctuality: Departure punctuality improved by 10.7% (from 67.9% to 78.7%), while ATFM slot adherence increased by 31.2% (from 64.6% to 95.8%). This study presents an innovative departure scheduling approach and offers a practical framework for improving collaborative operational efficiency among airports, air traffic management units, and airlines. With the rise of the low-altitude urban traffic system, urban air mobility (UAM) has developed rapidly. As a critical component of the UAM system, the strategic layout of vertiports helps divert ground traffic pressure. To satisfy various demand patterns, different vertiport levels are needed, so we focus on the hierarchical vertiport location problem. Considering the capacity limitation, a median location model is established to minimize vertiport construction cost, passenger commuting cost, and penalty cost. For the nonlinear term in the objective function, the Big-M method is employed. Based on the reformulated model, we improve the branch-and-bound algorithm (LVBB) to solve it, where the Lagrange relaxation method is used to decompose the large-scale problem into parallel subproblems and compute the lower bound, and the variable neighborhood search algorithm is used to obtain the upper bound. Numerical experiments are performed in the 11 administrative districts of Nanjing, China. The results demonstrate that the proposed location scheme effectively balances vertiport construction cost and passenger commuting cost while satisfying capacity limitations. It also significantly reduces commuting time to improve passenger satisfaction. This scheme can offer strategic guidance for infrastructure planning in UAM. Full article

Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) has been detected in wild boars across many countries in Europe, Asia, and South America. However, data regarding the presence of porcine circoviruses in wild boars and ticks remain limited. In this study, we investigated the presence and genetic characteristics of PCV3 in wild boars and parasitizing ticks in Jiangsu, China. Samples, including whole blood, serum, tissues, feces, and oral fluids from wild boars, as well as ticks collected from 47 wild boars, were obtained between March 2021 and November 2022. PCR results indicated that 34.0% (16/47) of wild boars tested positive for PCV3, while ELISA detected 41.9% (18/43) seropositivity. RT-qPCR results showed that 7.2% (6/83) were positive for PCV3 in 83 analyzed tick samples, with all positive samples identified as Amblyomma testudinarium. The PCV3 genome obtained from wild boars was classified as PCV3a and was closely related to the strain identified in domestic pigs in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. Collectively, these findings confirm the presence of PCV3 in wild boars in Jiangsu and suggest a possible link of PCV3 infection among domestic pigs, wild boars, and ticks, providing new insights into the transmission risk of PCV3 at wildlife–livestock–human interfaces and highlighting the genetic homology between strains from wild and domestic pigs. Street view imagery has become a vital tool for assessing urban street greenery, with the Green View Index (GVI) serving as the predominant metric. However, while GVI effectively quantifies overall greenery, it fails to capture the nuanced, human-scale experience of urban greenery. This study introduces the Front-Facing Green View Index (FFGVI), a metric designed to reflect the perspective of pedestrians traversing urban streets. The FFGVI computation involves three key steps: (1) calculating azimuths for road points, (2) retrieving front-facing street view images, and (3) applying semantic segmentation to identify green pixels in street view imagery. Building on this, this study proposes the Street Canyon Green View Index (SCGVI), a novel approach for identifying boulevards that evoke perceptions of comfort, spaciousness, and aesthetic quality akin to room-like streetscapes. Applying these indices to a case study in Nanjing, China, this study shows that (1) FFGVI exhibited a strong correlation with GVI (R = 0.88), whereas the association between SCGVI and GVI was marginally weaker (R = 0.78). GVI tends to overestimate perceived greenery due to the influence of lateral views dominated by side-facing vegetation; (2) FFGVI provides a more human-centered perspective, mitigating biases introduced by sampling point locations and obstructions such as large vehicles; and (3) SCGVI effectively identifies prominent boulevards that contribute to a positive urban experience. These findings suggest that FFGVI and SCGVI are valuable metrics for informing urban planning, enhancing urban tourism, and supporting greening strategies at the street level. Full article

Land Value Capture (LVC) is increasingly being emphasized as a key mechanism for financing mass transit systems, promoted as a sustainability-oriented policy tool amid tightening public budgets. China has adopted a development-led approach to value capture through the “Rail plus Property (R + P)” model, drawing inspiration from the Hong Kong experience. The Shenzhen Metro’s “R + P” strategy has been widely acclaimed as the key to its reputation as “the only profitable transit company in mainland China without subsidies.” This paper questions this assumption and argues that the Shenzhen model is neither sustainable nor replicable, as its past performance depended on two exceptional conditions: an ascending phase of a real-estate cycle and unique institutional concessions from the central state. To substantiate this argument, we contrast Shenzhen’s value capture strategy with that of Nanjing—a provincial capital operating under routine institutional conditions, with governance and spatial structures broadly reflecting the prevailing urban development model in China. Using a comparative framework structured around three key dimensions of LVC—urban governance, risk management, and the transit company’s shift toward real estate—this paper reveals how distinct urban political economies give rise to contrasting value capture approaches: one expansionary, prioritizing short-term profit and rapid scale-up while downplaying risk management (Shenzhen); the other conservative, shaped by institutional constraints and characterized by reactive, incremental adjustments (Nanjing). These findings suggest that while LVC instruments offer valuable potential as a funding source for public transit, their long-term viability depends on early institutional embedding that aligns spatial, fiscal, and political interests, alongside well-developed project planning and capacity support in real estate expertise. Carbon nanotubes are promising in agriculture for improving crop resilience and delivering agrochemicals. However, their effects on insect pests, especially chewing pests such as the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), remain underexplored. In this study, we investigated how two types of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes—hydroxylated (MWCNTs-OH) and carboxylated (MWCNTs-COOH), both obtained from Jiangsu Xianfeng Nano (Nanjing, China)—affect the pest’s development and reproduction. Using an age-stage two-sex life table approach, we fed larvae diets containing 0.04, 0.4, or 4 mg/g of these nanomaterials. Both types of MWCNTs exhibited concentration-dependent inhibitory effects. At the highest dose (4 mg/g), larval development was significantly prolonged, adult pre-oviposition periods increased, and fecundity (egg production) sharply declined, especially with MWCNTs-OH. Population growth parameters were also suppressed: net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (r), and finite rate of increase (λ) were reduced at 4 mg/g, particularly with MWCNTs-OH, while mean generation time (T) was extended with MWCNTs-COOH. Overall, MWCNTs-OH demonstrated a greater inhibitory impact compared to MWCNTs-COOH. These findings suggest that functionalized MWCNTs could serve as potential novel pest control agents against S. frugiperda by impeding its development and reproduction. Full article

Spatial Differentiation in the Contribution of Innovation Influencing Factors: An Empirical Study in Nanjing from the Perspective of Nonlinear Relationships

The agglomeration characteristics of innovation spaces reflect the intrinsic mechanisms of regional resource integration and collaborative innovation. Investigating the contributions of influencing factors to innovation space agglomeration and their spatial differentiation has significant implications for improving urban innovation quality. Taking the Nanjing central urban area as a case study, this research applied gradient boosting regression trees (GBRT) and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) models to explore the contributions of influencing factors to innovation space agglomeration and its spatial differentiation. Findings demonstrated that (1) Innovation platforms and patents emerged as the most significant driving factors, collectively accounting for 54.8% of the relative contributions; (2) The contributions of influencing factors to innovation space agglomeration exhibited marked nonlinear characteristics, specifically categorized into five distinct patterns: Sustained Growth Pattern, Growth-Stabilization Pattern, Growth-Decline Pattern, Global Stabilization Pattern, and Global Decline Pattern. The inflection thresholds of marginal effects across factors ranged from approximately 12% to 55% (e.g., 40% for metro stations, 13% for integrated commercial hubs); (3) Each influence factor’s contribution mechanism showed pronounced spatial heterogeneity across different regions. Based on these discoveries, governments should optimize innovation resource allocation according to regional characteristics and enhance spatial quality to promote efficient resource integration and transformation. This research provides a novel perspective for understanding innovation space agglomeration mechanisms and offers actionable references for urban policymakers to implement context-specific innovation economic development strategies. Urban green spaces (UGSs) and forests play a vital role in shaping sustainable and livable cities, offering not only ecological benefits but also spaces that are essential for human well-being, social interactions, and everyday life. Understanding the landscape features that resonate most with public preferences is essential for enhancing the appeal, accessibility, and functionality of these environments. However, traditional approaches—such as surveys or single-data analyses—often lack the nuance needed to capture the complex and multisensory nature of human responses to green spaces. This study explores a cross-modal methodology that integrates natural language processing (NLP) and deep learning techniques to analyze text and image data collected from public reviews of 19 urban parks in Nanjing. By capturing both subjective emotional expressions and objective visual impressions, this study reveals a consistent public preference for natural landscapes, particularly those featuring evergreen trees, shrubs, and floral elements. Text-based data reflect users’ lived experiences and nuanced perceptions, while image data offers insights into visual appeal and spatial composition. By bridging human-centered insights with data-driven analysis, this research provides a robust framework for evaluating landscape preferences. It also underscores the importance of designing green spaces that are not only ecologically sound but also emotionally resonant and socially inclusive. The findings offer valuable guidance for the planning, design, and adaptive management of urban green infrastructure in ways that support healthier, more responsive, and smarter urban environments. In this study, we introduced a novel Trajectory-Channel Transport Model (TCTM) to unravel spatiotemporal dynamics of PM2.5 pollution. By integrating high-resolution simulations from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with the Nested Air-Quality Prediction Modeling System (WRF-NAQPMS) and 72 h backward-trajectory analysis, TCTM enables the precise identification of source regions, the delineation of key transport corridors, and a quantitative assessment of regional contributions to receptor sites. Focusing on four Yangtze River Delta cities (Hangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hefei) during a January 2020 pollution event, the results demonstrate that TCTM’s Weighted Concentration Source (WCS) and Source Pollution Characteristic Index (SPCI) outperform traditional PSCF and CWT methods in source-attribution accuracy and resolution. Unlike receptor-based statistical approaches, TCTM reconstructs pollutant transport processes, quantifies spatial decay, and assigns contributions via physically interpretable metrics. This innovative framework offers actionable insights for targeted air-quality management strategies, highlighting its potential as a robust tool for pollution mitigation planning. Full article

Urban plots are pivotal links between individual buildings and the city fabric, yet conventional plot classification methods often overlook how buildings interact within each plot. This oversight is particularly problematic in the irregular fabrics typical of many Global South cities. This study aims to create a plot classification method that jointly captures metric and configurational characteristics. Our approach converts each cadastral plot into a graph whose nodes are building centroids and whose edges reflect Delaunay-based proximity. The model then learns unsupervised graph embeddings with a two-layer Graph Attention Network guided by a triple loss that couples building morphology with spatial topology. We then cluster the embeddings together with normalized plot metrics. Applying the model to 8973 plots in Nanjing’s historic walled city yields seven distinct plot morphological types. The framework separates plots that share identical FAR–GSI values but differ in internal organization. The baseline and ablation experiments confirm the indispensability of both configurational and metric information. Each type aligns with specific renewal strategies, from incremental upgrades of courtyard slabs to skyline management of high-rise complexes. By integrating quantitative graph learning with classical typo-morphology theory, this study not only advances urban form research but also offers planners a tool for context-sensitive urban regeneration and land-use management. With the rapid urbanization and increasing development of underground spaces, foundation pit groups in complex geological environments encounter considerable challenges in deformation control. These challenges are especially prominent in cases of adjacent constructions, complex geology, and environmentally sensitive areas. Nevertheless, existing research is lacking in systematic analysis of construction sequencing and the interaction mechanisms between foundation pit groups. This results in gaps in comprehending stress redistribution and optimal excavation strategies for such configurations. To address these gaps, this study integrates physical model tests and PLAXIS 3D numerical simulations to explore the Nanjing Jiangbei New District Phase II pit groups. It concentrates on deformations in segmented and adjacent configurations under varying excavation sequences and spacing conditions. Key findings reveal that simultaneous excavation in segmented pit groups optimizes deformation control through symmetrical stress relief via bilateral unloading, reducing shared diaphragm wall displacement by 18–25% compared to sequential methods. Sequential excavations induce complex soil stress redistribution from asymmetric unloading, with deep-to-shallow sequencing minimizing exterior wall deformation (≤0.12%He). For adjacent foundation pit groups, simultaneous excavation achieves minimum displacement interference, while phased construction requires prioritizing large-section excavation first to mitigate cumulative deformations through optimized stress transfer. When the spacing-to-depth ratio (B/He) is below 1, horizontal displacements of retaining structures increase by 43% due to spacing effects. This study quantifies the effects of excavation sequences and spacing configurations on pit group deformation, establishing a theoretical framework for optimizing construction strategies and enhancing retaining structure stability. The findings are highly significant for underground engineering design and construction in complex urban geological settings, especially in high-density areas with spatial and geotechnical constraints. Optimizing Nutrition Protocols for Improved Rice Yield, Quality, and Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Coastal Saline Soils

This study evaluated the effects of one-time application of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) on rice (Oryza sativa L.) grain yield, grain quality, and agronomic nitrogen use efficiency (ANUE, ANUE (kg/kg) = (Grain yield with N application − grain yield without N application)/N application amount) in coastal saline soils. A two-year field experiment (2023–2024) was conducted using two rice varieties (Nanjing 5718 and Yongyou 4953) under four nitrogen treatments: N0 (no nitrogen fertilization), N1 (270 kg·hm−2, with a ratio of 5:1:2:2 at 1-day before transplanting, 7-day after transplanting, panicle initiation, and penultimate-leaf appearance stage, respectively), N2 (270 kg·hm−2, one-time application at 1-day before transplanting as 50% CRF with 80-day release period + 50% urea), and N3 (270 kg·hm−2, 50% one-time application of CRF with 120-day release period at the seedling stage + 50% urea at 1-day before transplanting). Compared with N1, the N3 treatment significantly increased grain yield by 10.2% to 12.9% and improved ANUE by 18.5% to 51.6%. It also improved processing quality (higher brown rice, milled rice, and head rice rates), appearance quality (reduced chalkiness degree and chalky rice percentage), and taste value (by 19.3% to 31.2%). These improvements were associated with lower amylose, protein, and soluble sugar contents and favorable changes in starch composition and pasting properties. While N2 slightly improved some quality traits, it significantly reduced yield and ANUE. Correlation analysis revealed that starch and protein composition, as well as pasting properties, were significantly associated with taste value and related attributes such as appearance, stickiness, balance degree, and hardness. Overall, one-time application of CRF with a 120-day release period at the seedling stage, combined with basal urea, offers an effective strategy to boost yield, quality, and ANUE in coastal saline rice systems. This exploratory study presents the first metagenomic assessment of the gut microbiome in domestic cats from Cali, Colombia. Fecal samples were collected from 10 healthy, sterilized domestic cats, aged 8 months to over 2 years, with variation in sex (7 females, 3 males), diet (processed or raw), and outdoor access (5 with, 5 without). Using 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding and pooled shotgun metagenomic sequencing, the study characterized the taxonomic composition and functional potential of the feline gut microbiome. Dominant phyla included Bacillota and Bacteroidota, with substantial inter-individual variation. Peptoclostridium was the most consistently abundant genus, while Megamonas and Megasphaera showed higher variability. Shotgun analysis detected antibiotic resistance genes (ErmG, ErmQ) and virulence factors (pfoA, plc, colA, nanJ, nagI) in Clostridium perfringens, highlighting potential zoonotic risk. The composition of the gut microbiota was influenced primarily by diet and outdoor access, while age and gender had more moderate effects. The study concludes that lifestyle and environmental factors play a key role in shaping the gut microbiome of domestic cats. We recommend further longitudinal and larger-scale studies to better understand the dynamics of feline microbiota and their implications for animal and public health within a One Health framework. The challenges of globalization and urbanization increasingly impact the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), yet fine-grained and quantitative methods for evaluating HUL remain limited. Adopting a human-centered perspective, this study introduces a novel framework to quantitatively evaluate HUL through the lens of Historical Appearance Integrity (HAI). An evaluation system comprising four key dimensions (building materials, building colors, decorative details, and streetscape morphology) was constructed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). An Elo rating system was subsequently applied to quantify the scores of the indicators. A prediction model was developed based on transfer learning and feature fusion to estimate the scores of the indicators. The model achieved accuracies above 93% and loss values below 0.2 for all four indicators. The framework was applied to the Inner Qinhuai Historical Character Area in Nanjing for validation. Results show that the spatial distribution of HAI in the area exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity. On a 0–100 scale, the average HAI scores were 23.17 for primary roads, 27.73 for secondary roads, and 46.93 for branch roads. This study offers a fine-grained, automated approach to evaluate HAI along urban streets and provides a quantitative reference for heritage conservation and urban renewal strategies. Full article
