Research on young trees’ adaptation to shade has predominantly focused on leaf-level responses, overlooking critical structural and functional adaptations in branch systems. In this study, we address this gap by investigating hierarchical branch morphology–physiology integration in 20-year-old Pinus koraiensis specimens across four distinct light conditions classified by photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD): three in the understory (low light, LL: 0–25 μmol/m2/s; moderate light, ML: 25–50 μmol/m2/s; and high levels of light, HL: 50–100 μmol/m2/s) and one under full light as a control (FL: 1300–1700 μmol/m2/s). We measured branch base diameter, length, and angle as well as chlorophyll and non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) content in branches and needles. Branch base diameter and length were more than 1.5-fold higher in the FL Korean pine trees compared to the understory-grown ones, while the branching angle and ratio in the LL Korean pine trees were more than two times greater than those in the FL trees. As light levels increased, Chlorophyll a and b and total chlorophyll (Chla, Chlb, and Chl) concentrations in the needles all significantly decreased. Starch, glucose, and NSC concentrations in both needles and branches were the highest in the trees under FL and lowest under ML (except for glucose in branches). Understory young P. koraiensis trees morphologically and physiologically adapt to limited light conditions, growing to be more horizontal, synthesizing more chlorophyll in needles, and attempting to increase their light-foraging ability. We recommend gradually expanding growing spaces to increase light availability for 20-year-old Korean pine trees grown under canopy level. Full article

p-Cresyl sulfate (PCS), a gut-derived uremic toxin with proinflammatory and cytotoxic effects, has been implicated in cardiovascular injuries among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Aortic stiffness (AS), assessed by carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), is a recognized predictor of cardiovascular risk. This study investigated the association between serum PCS levels and AS in patients with nondialysis-dependent CKD. In total, 165 patients with nondialysis-dependent CKD were enrolled. Clinical data and fasting blood samples were collected. Arterial stiffness (AS) was assessed bilaterally by measuring carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) on both the left and right sides. A value above 10 m/s was considered indicative of increased stiffness. Serum PCS levels were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Fifty patients (30.3%) had AS. The AS group was significantly older and had higher diabetes prevalence, systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, urinary protein-creatinine ratio, and PCS levels than the control group. In the multivariate analysis, both PCS (odds ratio [OR]: 1.097; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.024–1.175; p = 0.008) and age (OR: 1.057; 95% CI: 1.025–1.090; p < 0.001) were independently associated with AS. In conclusion, elevated serum PCS and older age were independently associated with AS. Thus, PCS is a potential early marker of vascular damage in CKD. Full article

Lymphoma continues to pose a significant global health burden, highlighting the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies. Recent advances in microbiome research have identified gut-microbiota-derived metabolites, or postbiotics, as promising candidates in cancer therapy. This study investigates the antiproliferative and mechanistic effects of two postbiotics, Nisin (N) and Urolithin B (UB), individually and in combination, against the human lymphoma cell line HKB-11. Moreover, this study evaluated cytotoxic efficacy and underlying molecular pathways using a comprehensive experimental approach, including the Alamar Blue assay, combination index (CI) analysis, flow cytometry, reactive oxygen species (ROS) quantification, and bottom-up proteomics. N and UB displayed notable antiproliferative effects, with IC50 values of 1467 µM and 87.56 µM, respectively. Importantly, their combination at a 4:6 ratio demonstrated strong synergy (CI = 0.09 at IC95), significantly enhancing apoptosis (p ≤ 0.0001) and modulating oxidative stress. Proteomic profiling revealed significant regulation of key proteins related to lipid metabolism, mitochondrial function, cell cycle control, and apoptosis, including upregulation of COX6C (Log2FC = 2.07) and downregulation of CDK4 (Log2FC = −1.26). These findings provide mechanistic insights and underscore the translational potential of postbiotics in lymphoma treatment. Further preclinical and clinical investigations are warranted to explore their role in therapeutic regimens. Full article

Meat quality is influenced by factors such as age, breed, slaughter weight, and nutrition. This study investigated the growth performance, slaughter performance, and meat quality of ducks across different breeds and ages. Results indicated that at the same age, significant differences in body weight were observed among breeds (p < 0.05), with the weight ranking in descending order as follows: Cherry Valley ducks (C) > Wuqin 10 meat ducks (W) > Mianyang Partridge ducks (M) > Liancheng White ducks (L). A comparison of the same breed across different ages revealed that the pectoral muscle ratio tended to increase with age, whereas the leg muscle ratio showed the opposite trend; however, total meat production gradually rose. At all three growth stages, C ducks exhibited higher body weight and meat yield than the other breeds. W ducks demonstrated excellent meat quality traits and appropriate meat production, with indices such as shear force, water-holding capacity, and fat content all higher than those of the other breeds. L ducks and M ducks had relatively lower body weight and meat production compared to the other breeds, yet their shear force and water-holding capacity were superior to those of C ducks. The analysis of meat quality at different times showed that across all breeds, shear force, meat color, muscle fiber diameter, crude protein content, and fat content increased with age, while drip loss rate and muscle fiber density decreased. A comprehensive multi-index evaluation model for duck meat quality under different breeds was established, along with a four-factor principal component model (Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4). Using the comprehensive ranking equation K, the meat quality performance of different breeds at various ages, in descending order, was as follows: 63-day-old W > 90-day-old M > 63-day-old C > 90-day-old L > 63-day-old M > 90-day-old C > 63-day-old L > 90-day-old W > 42-day-old C > 42-day-old W. This study not only provides a theoretical basis for evaluating meat quality traits in different duck breeds but also offers insights for breed selection and age-related quality optimization. This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from extruded linseed, alone and combined with Padina pavonica algae extract, on growth performance and metabolic status in fattening rabbits. Sixty New Zealand White rabbits were assigned to three groups, as follows: control (CNT), L (5% linseed), and LPP (3.5% linseed + 0.2% algae extract) from weaning (37 days) to slaughter (85 days). Productive performance was assessed through body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and feed intake (FI). Blood was sampled at weaning, 60 days, and slaughter and analyzed for insulin, leptin, cortisol, thyroid hormones (T3, T4), glucose, and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs). The L group showed significantly higher ADG (41.0 ± 1 g/d) and improved FCR (4.1 ± 0.2) compared to LPP (ADG: 37 ± 1 g/d, FCR: 4.6 ± 0.2; p = 0.001). No differences were observed in final BW or FI among groups (p < 0.001). Insulin peaked at 60 days across all groups (p < 0.001), with the LPP group showing the lowest levels (9.8 ± 0.9 µUI/mL; p = 0.043). T3 and T4 increased significantly with age (p < 0.001), and the T3/T4 ratio varied by diet and time (p = 0.005). Cortisol rose only at slaughter (p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with insulin and thyroid hormones. The results suggest that omega-3-rich nutraceuticals can enhance growth performance without disrupting metabolic balance and may modulate specific hormonal responses due to their bioactive compounds. Background/Objectives: This study investigated the effects of chestnut tannic acid (TA) on the growth performance, the expression of tight junction proteins and the composition of the gut microbiota of weaned piglets, which could provide novel insights into the application of TA in swine production. Methods: In a 42-day trial, 180 healthy, 21-day-old Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire piglets were randomly assigned to a Control group and four treatment groups (TA1–4), fed commercial diets supplemented with 0, 0.06%, 0.12%, 0.18% or 0.24% TA. Each group had six replicates of six pigs each. Results: The average daily gain in all TA groups, the jejunal and ileal villus height and the villus height-to-crypt depth ratio in the TA3 and TA4 groups were markedly increased (p < 0.05). The mRNA levels of MUC2 and ZO-1 were upregulated in the TA3 group, as were those of MUC4 in the jejunum and ileum and claudin in the duodenum and ileum; glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidant capacity were upregulated in the duodenum and jejunum in the TA3 group, and total superoxide dismutase was increased in all the TA2 groups (p < 0.05). Conversely, the malondialdehyde significantly decreased in all the TA groups (p < 0.05). TA supplementation improved the alpha diversity of the intestinal microflora and augmented probiotic abundance while reducing that of pathogenic bacteria. The contents of acetic, isobutyric, valeric, isovaleric, hexanoic and propionic acids, as well as total short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), were higher in the TA2 and TA3 groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: TA inclusion in piglet diets improved the intestinal environment by upregulating the antioxidant enzymes, improving intestinal morphology and promoting probiotic growth and SCFA production while reducing pathogenic bacterial abundance, consequently enhancing the gut barrier and the growth of weaned piglets. Background: Falls in hospitalized patients are a significant healthcare concern. This study examined whether circadian lighting, which helps to regulate circadian rhythms, reduces fall risk. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in a 49-bed subacute and rehabilitation ward after the renovation and the installation of circadian lighting. Patients admitted during the five months with circadian lighting (intervention group) were compared to those admitted in the previous five months under fluorescent lighting (control group). Circadian lighting was defined as at least 275 equivalent melanopic lux between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m. Results: Significantly fewer patients in the intervention group experienced falls (7.4% vs. 15.0%, p = 0.0182). Logistic regression analysis identified circadian lighting as a protective factor (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.558, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.351–0.887, p = 0.0137), while age ≥ 80 (aOR = 2.48, 95% CI: 1.18–5.21, p = 0.0167) and anticonvulsant use (aOR = 3.68, 95% CI: 1.39–9.72, p = 0.0087) were significant risk factors. Conclusion: Circadian lighting was associated with a reduction in the number of patients who experienced falls, while advanced age and anticonvulsant use were significant risk factors. Full article

This paper presents some of the most significant findings in the design of a hydraulic servomechanism for flight controls, which were primarily achieved by the first author during his activity in an aviation institute. These results are grouped into four main topics. The first one outlines a classical theory, from the 1950s–1970s, of the analysis of nonlinear automatic systems and namely the issue of absolute stability. The uninformed public may be misled by the adjective “absolute”. This is not a “maximalist” solution of stability but rather highlights in the system of equations a nonlinear function that describes, for the case of hydraulic servomechanisms, the flow-control dependence in the distributor spool. This function is odd, and it is therefore located in quadrants 1 and 3. The decision regarding stability is made within the so-called Lurie problem and is materialized by a matrix inequality, called the Lefschetz condition, which must be satisfied by the parameters of the electrohydraulic servomechanism and also by the components of the control feedback vector. Another approach starts from a classical theorem of V. M. Popov, extended in a stochastic framework by T. Morozan and I. Ursu, which ends with the description of the local and global spool valve flow-control characteristics that ensure stability in the large with respect to bounded perturbations for the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism. We add that a conjecture regarding the more pronounced flexibility of mathematical models in relation to mathematical instruments (theories) was used. Furthermore, the second topic concerns, the importance of the impedance characteristic of the mechano-hydraulic servomechanism in preventing flutter of the flight controls is emphasized. Impedance, also called dynamic stiffness, is defined as the ratio, in a dynamic regime, between the output exerted force (at the actuator rod of the servomechanism) and the displacement induced by this force under the assumption of a blocked input. It is demonstrated in the paper that there are two forms of the impedance function: one that favors the appearance of flutter and another that allows for flutter damping. It is interesting to note that these theoretical considerations were established in the institute’s reports some time before their introduction in the Aviation Regulation AvP.970. However, it was precisely the absence of the impedance criterion in the regulation at the appropriate time that ultimately led, by chance or not, to a disaster: the crash of a prototype due to tailplane flutter. A third topic shows how an important problem in the theory of automatic systems of the 1970s–1980s, namely the robust synthesis of the servomechanism, is formulated, applied and solved in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In general, the solution of a robust servomechanism problem consists of two distinct components: a servo-compensator, in fact an internal model of the exogenous dynamics, and a stabilizing compensator. These components are adapted in the case of an electrohydraulic servomechanism. In addition to the classical case mentioned above, a synthesis problem of an anti-windup (anti-saturation) compensator is formulated and solved. The fourth topic, and the last one presented in detail, is the synthesis of a fuzzy supervised neurocontrol (FSNC) for the position tracking of an electrohydraulic servomechanism, with experimental validation, in the laboratory, of this control law. The neurocontrol module is designed using a single-layered perceptron architecture. Neurocontrol is in principle optimal, but it is not free from saturation. To this end, in order to counteract saturation, a Mamdani-type fuzzy logic was developed, which takes control when neurocontrol has saturated. It returns to neurocontrol when it returns to normal, respectively, when saturation is eliminated. What distinguishes this FSNC law is its simplicity and efficiency and especially the fact that against quite a few opponents in the field, it still works very well on quite complicated physical systems. Finally, a brief section reviews some recent works by the authors, in which current approaches to hydraulic servomechanisms are presented: the backstepping control synthesis technique, input delay treated with Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals, and critical stability treated with Lyapunov–Malkin theory. Psychiatric Comorbidities Associated with Food Addiction in Post-Bariatric Patients: Toward Personalized Mental Health Screening and Postoperative Care

Background: Food addiction (FA) is an emerging construct that mirrors the behavioral and neurobiological characteristics of substance use disorders. Despite growing interest, its association with specific psychiatric disorders among bariatric patients remains understudied. Objective: Our aim was to examine the prevalence and strength of associations between FA and seven major psychiatric disorders in individuals who underwent bariatric surgery. Methods: In a sample of 100 post-bariatric patients referred for psychiatric evaluation, FA was assessed using the modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (mYFAS 2.0), and psychiatric disorders were diagnosed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for the association between FA and each psychiatric disorder, controlling for sex, age, body mass index (BMI), employment status, the number of children, clinical comorbidities, physical activity, family psychiatric history, and region of residence. Results: FA was present in 40% of the sample. Descriptive analyses revealed a significantly higher prevalence of major depressive disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa among individuals with FA. Multivariate models showed robust associations between FA and bulimia nervosa (aOR = 14.77, p < 0.01), generalized anxiety disorder (aOR = 6.99, p < 0.01), panic disorder (aOR = 6.83, p = 0.02), and major depressive disorder (aOR = 6.31, p < 0.01). Conclusions: FA is strongly associated with a range of psychiatric comorbidities in post-bariatric patients, reinforcing the need for comprehensive mental health screening in this population. These findings underscore the potential role of FA as a clinical marker for stratified risk assessment, supporting more personalized approaches to mental health monitoring and intervention following bariatric surgery. Urban outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) has become an increasingly critical issue under the pressures of urbanization and climate change. Comparative analyses of urban blocks with distinct spatial morphologies are essential for identifying OTC issues and proposing targeted optimization strategies. However, existing studies predominantly rely on microclimate numerical simulations, while comparative assessments of OTC from the human thermal perception perspective remain limited. This study employs the thermal walk method, integrating microclimatic measurements with thermal perception questionnaires, to conduct on-site OTC investigations across three urban blocks with contrasting spatial morphologies—a business district (BD), a residential area (RA), and a historical neighborhood (HN)—in Beijing, a hot summer and cold winter climate city. The results reveal substantial OTC differences among the blocks. However, these differences demonstrated great seasonal and temporal variations. In summer, BD exhibited the best OTC (mTSV = 1.21), while HN performed the worst (mTSV = 1.72). In contrast, BD showed the poorest OTC in winter (mTSV = −1.57), significantly lower than HN (−1.11) and RA (−1.05). This discrepancy was caused by the unique morphology of different blocks. The sky view factor emerged as a more influential factor affecting OTC over building coverage ratio and building height, particularly in RA (r = 0.689, p < 0.01), but its impact varied by block, season, and sunlight conditions. North–South streets generally perform better OTC than East–West streets, being 0.26 units cooler in summer and 0.20 units warmer in winter on the TSV scale. The study highlights the importance of incorporating more applicable physical parameters to optimize OTC in complex urban contexts and offering theoretical support for designing climate adaptive urban spaces. Variation in Arterial Stiffness and Markers of Oxidative Stress in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus from Different Ethnic Groups

Diabetes is the world’s leading cause of renal and premature cardiovascular disease. There are marked differences between groups of patients with different ethnicities in their susceptibility to diabetes and its renal and cardiovascular complications. Novel markers of developing diabetes complications are related to disturbances in oxidative metabolism. In this cross-sectional study, we measured the arterial stiffness in patients of differing ethnicities with type 2 diabetes mellitus and assessed the relationship of their ethnicity with systemic markers of oxidative stress. Patients from black, African and Caribbean, and Asian minor ethnic groups were studied, with white patients with T2DM (n = 170) without evidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The vascular stiffness was measured by infrared finger-photoplethysmography. The oxidative stress burden was assessed by measuring the urinary 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), activities of plasma glutathione peroxidase (GPx-3), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, and concentration of selenium. The vascular stiffness and 8-OHdG were higher in the white than in the Black patients (9.68 m/s vs. 9.26 m/s, p = 0.021 and 292.8 ng/mL vs. 200.9 ng/mL, p = 0.0027, respectively). Meanwhile, the GPx-3 and SOD activities and selenium were lower in the white than in the Black patients (283.3 U/L vs. 440.4 U/L, p < 0.0001; 37.5 U/L vs. 75.6 U/L, p = 0.0007; and 1.14 vs. 1.28 µmol/L, p = 0.0001, respectively). In regression modelling, the 8-OHdG/creatinine ratio was an independent predictor of vascular stiffness in the white patient group (β = 0.23 m/s per unit increase in ln(8-OHdG/creatinine) [95% CI, 0.03 to 0.42]; p = 0.021) but not in the Black patient group (p = 0.29). Increased vascular stiffness, lower endogenous antioxidant defense, and greater levels of oxidative damage were found in patients of white ethnicity, which could contribute to the higher incidence of CVD compared with patients from Black minor ethnic groups with diabetic renal disease. Global DNA Methylation in Poorly Controlled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Association with Redox and Inflammatory Biomarkers

Although emerging evidence suggests that epigenetic mechanisms contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), data remain limited for patients with suboptimal metabolic control. The aim of this study was to assess global DNA methylation in patients with poorly controlled T2DM and to identify diabetes-related factors associated with DNA methylation levels. The study included 107 patients and 50 healthy controls. Global DNA methylation (5mC) was measured by UHPLC-DAD method. Pro-oxidant and antioxidant biomarkers, advanced glycation end-products, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and complete blood count were determined and leukocyte indices calculated. Patients had a significantly lower 5mC than controls (3.56 ± 0.31% vs. 4.00 ± 0.68%; p < 0.001), with further reductions observed in those with longer disease duration and diabetic foot ulcers. Oxidative stress and inflammatory biomarkers were higher in the patient group. DNA hypomethylation was associated with a higher monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio and hsCRP, pro-oxidant–antioxidant balance, ischemia-modified albumin, and advanced oxidation protein products levels. Conversely, 5mC levels showed positive correlations with total antioxidant status and total sulfhydryl groups. Principal component analysis identified five key factors: proinflammatory, pro-oxidant, aging, hyperglycemic, and antioxidant. The pro-oxidant factor emerged as the sole independent predictor of global DNA hypomethylation in T2DM (OR = 2.294; p = 0.027). Our results indicate that global DNA hypomethylation could be a biomarker of T2DM progression, reflecting the complex interactions between oxidative stress, inflammation, and epigenetic modifications in T2DM. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the eccentric utilization ratio (EUR) and sprint, change of direction (COD), change of direction deficit (CODD%), and vertical jump performance, including countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ). A total of 32 elite athletes (16 women and 16 men) participated. Performance was evaluated using force platforms and photocell timing systems during CMJ, SJ, 30 m sprint, and Pro-Agility tests. Pearson correlation and simple linear regression analyses were used to assess the relationships between EUR and performance variables. The results revealed that EUR was significantly associated with CMJ height (r = 0.587, p = 0.017) and 0–10 m sprint performance (r = 0.516, p = 0.041) in female athletes, whereas no significant relationships were found in males (r < 0.20, p > 0.05) for all performance variables. In contrast, strength–power metrics such as eccentric peak power (ECCPP), eccentric mean power (ECCMP), concentric mean power (CONMP), and peak power (PP) showed stronger associations with all performance variables, including COD, sprint segments, and jump tests. In conclusion, although EUR demonstrated limited predictive value particularly in male athletes directly measured strength–power variables appear to be more reliable indicators of athletic performance. These findings highlight the importance of prioritizing eccentric and concentric power outputs in performance assessment and individualized training strategies. Full article

Background/Objectives: Endometriosis and high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGS-OC) share common features within the peritoneal immune microenvironment, yet they exhibit divergent clinical outcomes. This study aimed to dissect the immune–metabolic landscape of the peritoneal cavity in patients with endometriosis and ovarian cancer by evaluating macrophage polarization, intracellular signaling pathways, and iron-driven oxidative stress. Methods: A prospective cohort study enrolled 40 patients with endometriosis, 198 with ascitic ovarian cancer (178 HGS-OC), and 200 controls with benign gynecological conditions. Peritoneal and peripheral blood samples were analyzed via flow cytometry for macrophage (M1/M2) polarization markers, mTOR/AKT expression, and glucose uptake. Inflammatory markers (IL-6, CRP), oxidative stress (ROS), and iron metabolism parameters (hepcidin, ferritin, transferrin, serum/free iron) were quantified. Results: HGS-OC displayed a predominance of M1-polarized tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) (CD14⁺/CD80⁺/Glut1⁺) and a high M1/M2 ratio (2.5 vs. 0.8 and 0.9; p = 0.019), correlating positively with IL-6 (p = 0.015), ROS (p = 0.023), hepcidin (p = 0.038), and ferritin (p = 0.043). Conversely, endometriosis showed a dominant M2 profile (CD14⁺/CD163⁺), elevated intracellular mTOR and AKT expression in both TAMs and epithelial cells (p < 0.01), and significantly higher ascitic ROS and free iron levels (p = 0.047 and p < 0.0001, respectively). In endometriosis, the M1/M2 ratio correlated inversely with free iron (p = 0.041), while ROS levels were directly associated with iron overload (p = 0.0034). Conclusions: Endometriosis exhibits a distinct immune–metabolic phenotype characterized by M2 macrophage predominance and iron-induced oxidative stress, contrasting with the inflammatory, M1-rich profile of HGS-OC. These findings suggest that iron metabolism and macrophage plasticity contribute to disease persistence in endometriosis and may inform future immunomodulatory strategies. Full article

Searching for new and efficient transfer hydrogenation catalysts, a series of new organometallic ruthenium(II)-arene complexes of the formulae [Ru(η6-p-cymene)(L)Cl][PF6] (18) and [Ru(η6-p-cymene)(L)Cl][Ru(η6-p-cymene)Cl3] (911) were synthesized and fully characterized. These were prepared from the reaction of pyridine–quinoline and biquinoline-based ligands (L) with [Ru(η6-p-cymene)(μ-Cl)Cl]2, in 1:2 and 1:1, metal (M) to ligand (L) molar ratios. Characterization includes a combination of spectroscopic methods (FT-IR, UV-Vis, multi nuclear NMR), elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The pyridine–quinoline organic entities encountered, were prepared in high yield either via the thermal decarboxylation of the carboxylic acid congeners, namely 2,2′-pyridyl-quinoline-4-carboxylic acid (pqca), 8-methyl-2,2′-pyridyl-quinoline-4-carboxylic acid (8-Mepqca), 6′-methyl-2,2′-pyridyl-quinoline-4-carboxylic acid (6′-Mepqca) and 8,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-pyridyl-quinoline-4-carboxylic acid (8,6′-Me2pqca), affording the desired ligands pq, 8-Mepq, 6′-Mepq and 8,6′-Me2pq, or by the classical Friedländer condensation, to yield 4,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-pyridyl-quinoline (4,6′-Me2pq) and 4-methyl-2,2′-pyridyl-quinoline (4-Mepq), respectively. The solid-state structures of complexes 14, 6, 8 and 9 were determined showing a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. The unit cell of 3 contains two independent molecules (Ru-3), (Ru′-3) in a 1:1 ratio, due to a slight rotation of the arene ring. All complexes catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone, using 2-propanol as a hydrogen donor in the presence of KOiPr. Among them, complexes 1 and 5 bearing methyl groups at the 8 and 4 position of the quinoline moiety, convert acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol quantitatively, within approximately 10 min with final TOFs of 1600 h−1. The catalytic performance of complexes 111, towards the transfer hydrogenation of p-substituted acetophenone derivatives and benzophenone, ranges from moderate to excellent. An inner-sphere mechanism has been suggested based on the detection of ruthenium(II) hydride species. Full article
