Decision Tree Pruning with Privacy-Preserving Strategies

Machine learning techniques, particularly decision trees, have been extensively utilized in Network-based Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDSs) due to their transparent, rule-based structures that enable straightforward interpretation. However, this transparency presents privacy risks, as decision trees may inadvertently expose sensitive information such as network configurations or IP addresses. In our previous work, we introduced a sensitive pruning-based decision tree to mitigate these risks within a limited dataset and basic pruning framework. In this extended study, three privacy-preserving pruning strategies are proposed: standard sensitive pruning, which conceals specific sensitive attribute values; optimistic sensitive pruning, which further simplifies the decision tree when the sensitive splits are minimal; and pessimistic sensitive pruning, which aggressively removes entire subtrees to maximize privacy protection. The methods are implemented using the J48 (Weka C4.5 package) decision tree algorithm and are rigorously validated across three full-scale NIDS datasets: GureKDDCup, UNSW-NB15, and CIDDS-001. To ensure a realistic evaluation of time-dependent intrusion patterns, a rolling-origin resampling scheme is employed in place of conventional cross-validation. Additionally, IP address truncation and port bilateral classification are incorporated to further enhance privacy preservation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed pruning strategies effectively reduce the exposure of sensitive information, significantly simplify decision tree structures, and incur only minimal reductions in classification accuracy. These findings reaffirm that privacy protection can be successfully integrated into decision tree models without severely compromising detection performance. To further support the proposed pruning strategies, this study also includes a comprehensive review of decision tree post-pruning techniques. Full article

Beyond its crucial role as a tight barrier to protect the nervous system, the Blood–Brain Barrier (BBB) is increasingly being recognized for its physiological processes that affect brain function and behavior. In Drosophila melanogaster, the BBB expresses sex-specific transcripts, and a change in the sexual identity of adult BBB cells results in a significant reduction in male courtship behavior. The molecular nature of this BBB/brain interaction and the molecules that mediate it are unknown. Here we feminize BBB cells by targeted expression of the Drosophila female-specific master regulator TraF in otherwise normal males. We examined the effect on RNA expression in dissected brains by RNA sequenc-ing. We find that 283 transcripts change in comparison to normal control males. Tran-scripts representing cell signaling processes and synaptic communication are enriched, as are hormonal mediators. These transcripts provide a valuable resource for addressing questions about BBB and brain interaction. Full article

Background: Treatment compliant with the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) can promote more effective disease control. Single-inhaler triple therapy (SITT) is one method that is used to optimize therapy in this context, but TRIPLE therapy is still employed by physicians to a limited extent. Objective: This study aimed to describe the factors influencing challenges in optimizing asthma therapy. Methods: A 19-question survey, created via the CATI system, was distributed among pulmonologists, allergologists, general practitioners, and internal medicine specialists in Poland, Greece, Sweden, Slovenia, and Austria. Results: Statistically significant percentage differences in the use of TRIPLE therapy in the context of asthma management were observed among countries as well as between pulmonologists, allergists, and other specialists. Overuse of oral corticosteroids (OCSs) to treat nonsevere and severe asthma in the absence of an approach that focuses on optimizing inhalation therapy among asthma patients receiving TRIPLE therapy was observed in different countries as well as among physicians with different specialties. Twenty elements associated with the challenges involved in diagnosing and managing difficult-to-treat and severe asthma were identified. Six clinical categories for the optimization of asthma therapy via SITT were highlighted. The degree of therapeutic underestimation observed among severe asthma patients was assessed by comparing actual treatment with the recommendations of the GINA 2023 guidelines. Conclusions: Physicians of various specialties in Europe are subject to therapeutic inertia in terms of their compliance with the GINA 2023 guidelines. Full article

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system that significantly impairs postural control and functional abilities. Robotic-assisted gait training mitigates this functional deterioration. This preliminary study aims to investigate the effects of a four-week gait training with the ExoAtlet II exoskeleton on static balance control and functional mobility in five individuals with MS (Expanded Disability Status Scale ≤ 2.5). Before and after the training, they were assessed in quiet standing under Eyes Open (EO) and Eyes Closed (EC) conditions and with the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Center of Pressure (CoP) Sway Area, Antero–Posterior (AP) and Medio–Lateral (ML) CoP displacement, Stay Time, and Total Instability Duration were computed. TUG test Total Duration, sit-to-stand, stand-to-sit, and linear walking phase duration were analyzed. To establish target reference values for rehabilitation advancement, the same evaluations were performed on a matched healthy cohort. After the training, an improvement in static balance with EO was observed towards HS values (reduced Sway Area, AP and ML CoP displacement, and Total Instability Duration and increased Stay Time). Enhancements under EC condition were less marked. TUG test performance improved, particularly in the stand-to-sit phase. These preliminary findings suggest functional benefits of exoskeleton gait training for individuals with MS. Full article

Inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a heterogeneous clinical entity that includes over 30 phenotypically and/or genotypically distinct inherited disorders, characterized by mechanical skin fragility and bullae formation. Junctional EB (JEB) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by an intermediated cleavage level within the skin layers, commonly at the “lamina lucida”. Laryngo-onycho-cutaneous syndrome (LOC) is an extremely rare variant of JEB, characterized by granulation tissue formation in specific body sites (skin, larynx, and nails). Although most cases of JEB are caused by pathogenic variants occurring in the genes encoding for classical components of the lamina lucida, such as laminin 332 (LAMA3, LAMB3, LAMC2), integrin α6β4 (ITGA6, ITGB4), and collagen XVII (COL17A1), other variants have also been described. We report the case of a 4-month-old male infant who presented with recurrent bullous and erosive lesions from the first month of life. At the first dermatological evaluation, the patient was agitated and exhibited hoarse breathing, a clinical sign suggestive of laryngeal involvement. Multiple polygonal skin erosions were observed on the cheeks, along with similar isolated, roundish lesions on the scalp and legs. Notably, nail dystrophy and near-complete anonychia were evident on the left first and fifth toes. Due to the coexistence of skin erosions and nail dystrophy in such a young infant, a congenital bullous disorder was suspected, prompting molecular analysis of all potentially involved genes. In the patient’s DNA, clinical exome sequencing (CES) identified a pathogenic variant, apparently in homozygosity, in the exon 1 of the LAMA3 gene (18q11.2; NM_000227.6): c.47G > A;p.Trp16*. The presence of this variant was confirmed, in heterozygosity, in the genomic DNA of the patient’s mother, while it was absent in the father’s DNA. Subsequently, trio-based SNP array analysis was performed, revealing a paternally derived pathogenic microdeletion encompassing the LAMA3 locus (18q11.2). To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of JEB with a LOC-like phenotype caused by a maternally inherited monoallelic nonsense mutation in LAMA3, unmasked by an almost complete deletion of the paternal allele. The combined use of exome sequencing and SNP array is proving essential for elucidating autosomal recessive diseases with a discordant segregation. This is pivotal for providing accurate genetic counseling to parents regarding future pregnancies. Full article

Ferrocene (Fc), a redox-active organometallic scaffold, has attracted significant attention in medicinal chemistry due to its favorable physicochemical and pharmacological properties. The present study explores the therapeutic potential of novel Fc-functionalized analogues of imatinib and nilotinib, aimed at targeting BCR-ABL1+ chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cells. A series of Fc-based derivatives (compounds 6, 9, 14, and 18) were synthesized by systematically substituting key pharmacophoric regions of the parent tyrosine kinase inhibitors with Fc units. The antiproliferative activity of these compounds was evaluated against four BCR-ABL1-positive leukemia cell lines (K-562, BV-173, AR-230, and LAMA-84), with imatinib serving as a reference drug. Biological assays revealed distinct structure–activity relationships. Compounds 6 and 9 demonstrated superior activity against the K-562 cell line, while compounds 14 and 18 exhibited enhanced potency and higher ligand efficiencies (LEs) against BV-173 and AR-230 cells compared to imatinib. Selectivity assays further indicated favorable toxicity profiles of compounds 9 and 14 toward malignant versus non-malignant cells. Molecular docking studies supported these findings, showing that Fc substitution alters binding interactions within the c-Abl kinase ATP-binding site while retaining key stabilizing contacts. Computationally predicted LEs showed strong correlation with experimental data, especially for K-562 and LAMA-84 cells, confirming the kinase as a relevant target. Full article

Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis is commonly seen in patients who are immunodeficient or have inflammatory bowel disease. Among the gastrointestinal sites affected by CMV, the colon is the most frequently affected, though rectal involvement is relatively rare. Reactivated CMV proctitis primarily occurs in elderly patients with comorbidities and is quite uncommon in immunocompetent individuals. Patients with reactivated CMV typically present with symptoms such as diarrhea, hematochezia, or tenesmus. Case presentation: We report a case of a female patient with uncontrolled diabetes who presented to the clinic complaining of perianal pain. She had no history of diarrhea or rectal bleeding. Lower GI endoscopy reported a small, localized, approximately 0.5 cm swelling in the proximal anal canal in addition to sigmoid diverticulosis. The biopsy revealed a small ulcer at the anorectal junction caused by CMV and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. Unfortunately, the patient was lost to follow-up before antiviral therapy could be initiated. Conclusions: This case highlights an uncommon presentation of reactivated CMV proctitis in an older diabetic patient presenting solely with perianal pain. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for CMV infection in elderly patients with comorbidities, even when classical colitis symptoms are absent, to avoid delayed diagnosis and management. This paper studies the existence, regularity, and properties of normalized ground state solutions for the mixed fractional Schrödinger equations. For subcritical cases, we establish the boundedness and Sobolev regularity of solutions, derive Pohozaev identities, and prove the existence of radial, decreasing ground states, while showing nonexistence in the L2-critical case. For L2-supercritical exponents, we identify parameter regimes where ground states exist, characterized by a negative Lagrange multiplier. The analysis combines variational methods, scaling techniques, and the careful study of fibering maps to address challenges posed by competing nonlinearities and nonlocal interactions. Full article

Background/Objectives: Schoolteachers play a central role in shaping their students’ beliefs and attitudes towards oral health. Our aim was to investigate the oral and periodontal health knowledge of schoolteachers in Riyadh and factors affecting this knowledge. Methods: Government schoolteachers from representative areas of Riyadh (n = 895) responded to a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression (p ≤ 0.05). Results: Teachers demonstrated good basic oral/periodontal health knowledge (mean score = 60.21 ± 10.68). Most knew that toothbrushing is necessary to preserve dental (78.66%) and periodontal (57.88%) health; that gingival bleeding (74.41%), swelling (64.25%), and abscess formation (52.96%) are signs of periodontal disease; about 63% identified dental biofilm as an etiologic factor, and 58% knew that periodontitis may cause gingival recession and influence systemic health (74.07%). However, only 38% knew that dental flossing is necessary to preserve periodontal health, and 66.03% believed that gingival health can be restored with a special toothpaste. Teachers who were female, older in age, worked in north Riyadh, and taught the intermediate stage demonstrated statistically significantly better knowledge than the other categories. Conclusions: The studied sample of schoolteachers possesses acceptable basic oral health knowledge but has inadequate knowledge of periodontal health. Factors influencing teachers’ knowledge were age, gender, region of work, and teaching stage. Full article

Contemporary evaluation and surgical approaches in congenital aortic valve disease have yielded limited success. The ability to evaluate and understand detailed flow characteristics surrounding surgical repair may be beneficial. This study explores the feasibility and utility of echocardiographic-based blood speckle imaging (BSI) in assessing pre- and post-operative flow characteristics in those with non-stenotic congenital aortic root disease undergoing aortic valve repair or valve-sparing root replacement (VSRR) surgery. Transesophageal echocardiogram was performed during the pre-operative and post-operative assessment surrounding aortic surgery for ten patients with non-stenotic congenital aortic root disease. BSI, utilizing block-matching algorithms, enabled detailed visualization and quantification of flow parameters from the echocardiographic data. Post-operative BSI unveiled enhanced hemodynamic patterns, characterized by quantified changes suggestive of the absence of stenosis and no more than trivial regurgitation. Rectification of an asymmetric jet and the reversal of flow on the posterior aspect of the ascending aorta resulted in a reduced oscillatory shear index (OSI) of 0.0543±0.0207 (pre-op) vs. 0.0275±0.0159 (post-op) and p=0.0044, increased peak wall shear stress of 1.9423±0.6974 (pre-op) vs. 3.6956±1.4934 (post-op) and p=0.0035, and increased time-averaged wall shear stress of 0.6885±0.8004 (pre-op) vs. 0.8312±0.303 (post-op) and p=0.23. This correction potentially attenuates cellular alterations within the endothelium. This study demonstrates that children and young adults with non-stenotic congenital aortic root disease undergoing valve-preserving operations experience significant improvements in flow dynamics within the left ventricular outflow tract and aortic root, accompanied by a reduction in OSI. These hemodynamic enhancements extend beyond the conventional echocardiographic assessments, offering immediate and valuable insights into the efficacy of surgical interventions. Full article

Background/Objectives: Anatomical and functional damage of the mitral valve (MV) apparatus in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is secondary to left ventricular (LV) injury, leading to functional mitral regurgitation (FMR). Real-time four-dimensional echocardiography (RT 4DE) is a useful imaging technique in different pathologies, including DCM. Left atrial (LA) strain, as measured by left atrium quantification software, is an accurate technique for evaluating increased filling pressure. The MV has a complex three-dimensional morphology and motion. Four-dimensional echocardiography (4DE) has revolutionized clinical imaging of the mitral valve apparatus. This study aims (1) to characterize the mitral annulus (MA) parameters in patients with DCM and advanced-stage heart failure (HF) according to etiology and (2) to find correlations between left atrial function and MA remodeling in this group of patients, using 4DE quantification software. Methods: A total of 82 patients with DCM and an LV ejection fraction ≤ 40% were recruited. Conventional 2DE and RT 4DE were conducted in DCM patients with a compensated phase of HF before discharge. The measured parameters were left atrial reservoir strain (LASr), annular area (AA), annular perimeter (AP), anteroposterior diameter (A-Pd), posteromedial to anterolateral diameter (PM-ALd), commissural distance (CD), interregional distance (ITD), annular height (AH), nonplanar angle (NPA), tenting height (TH), tenting area (TA), and tenting volume (TV). Results: Measured parameters revealed more advanced damage of LA and MA parameters in ischemic compared to nonischemic etiology. Univariate analysis identified AA, AP, A-Pd, PM-ALd, CD, ITD, TH, TA, and TV (p < 0.0001) as determinants of LASr. Including these parameters in a stepwise multivariate logistic regression, PM-ALd (p = 0.03), TH (p = 0.043), and TV (p = 0.0001) were the best predictors of LAsr in these patients. Conclusions: The results of this study revealed the correlation between LA function depression and MA remodeling in patients with DCM. Full article

Japanese sake, a traditional alcoholic beverage, contains several organic acids that may contribute to its sour taste. To identify these, a precolumn derivatization reagent, benzyl 5-(2-aminoethyl)-3-methyl-4-oxoimidazolidine-1-carboxylate (CIM-C2-NH2), developed for labeling carboxyl groups, was synthesized and applied to liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis of organic acids in six commercial sake samples. The majority primarily contained lactic acid (LA), and dicarboxylic acids, such as succinic acid (SA), malic acid (MA), and citramalic acid (CMA). The organic acid concentrations and compositions in the sake differed among brands. Notably, both l- and d-forms of LA were detected in all samples, while only d-CMA was present. To estimate the total acidic content, neutralization titration with sodium hydroxide was performed. In four of the six samples, titration results closely matched LC-MS/MS data, suggesting that l-LA, d-LA, SA, MA, and d-CMA were the primary contributors for the sour taste in these sakes. The discrepancy between titration and LC-MS/MS data for the other samples was attributed to the presence of other organic acids, which will be investigated in future studies. Full article

The objective of this study is to design, develop, and analyze a tri-wheeled trolley integrated with a motor that incorporates adjustable and foldable features. The purpose of a trolley is to allow users to easily transport items from one place to another. However, problems arise when transporting objects across challenging surfaces, such as up a flight of stairs, using a conventional cart. This innovation uses multiple engineering skills to determine and develop the best possible design for a stair-climbing trolley. A tri-wheel mechanism is integrated into its motorized design, meticulously engineered for adjustability, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of staircase dimensions. The designed trolley was constructed considering elements and processes such as a literature review, conceptual design, concept screening, concept scoring, 3D modelling, engineering design calculations, and simulations. The trolley was tested, and the measured pulling force data were compared with the theoretical calculations. A graph of the pulling force vs. load was plotted, in which both datasets showed similar increasing trends; hence, the designed trolley worked as expected. The development of this stair-climbing trolley can benefit people living in rural areas or low-cost buildings that are not equipped with elevators and can reduce injuries among the elderly. The designed stair-climbing trolley will not only minimize the user’s physical effort but also enhance safety. On top of that, the adjustable and foldable features of the stair-climbing trolley would benefit users living in areas with limited space. Full article

To address the high cost of cobalt in rare-earth hydrogen storage alloys, this study developed cost-effective low-cobalt and cobalt-free AB5-type alloys. The results demonstrate that all synthesized alloys displayed a single-phase LaNi5 structure possessing a homogeneous elemental distribution. Low-cobalt (La, Ce) (Ni, Co, Mn, Al)5 alloy 4SC and cobalt-free (La, Ce) (Ni, Mn, Al)5 alloy 7D exhibited similarly excellent electrochemical performance, including high discharge capacity, long cycle life, and superior high-rate discharge (HRD) capability. In addition, the kinetic test results show that the exchange current densities of these two alloys were quite similar, measuring 302.97 mA g−1 and 317.70 mA g−1, respectively. However, the hydrogen diffusion coefficient of 7D was significantly higher than that of 4SC, reaching 9.45 × 10−10 cm2 s−1, while that of 4SC was only 5.88 × 10−10 cm2/s. This work establishes a theoretical foundation for industrial-scale and cost-effective AB5-type hydrogen storage alloys, offering significant commercial potential. Full article

Neoproterozoic Subduction Zone Fluids and Sediment Melt-Metasomatized Mantle Magmatism on the Northern Yangtze Block: Constraints from the Ca. 880 Ma Taoyuan Syenogranite

The Yangtze Block, with its widespread Neoproterozoic mafic–felsic magmatic rock series and volcanic–sedimentary rock assemblages, is one of the key windows for reconstructing the assembly and fragmentation process of Rodinia. This study focuses on the Taoyuan syenogranite from the Micangshan Massif on the northern Yangtze Block, by conducting systematic chronology, mineralogy, and geochemistry analyses to investigate their source, petrogenesis, and tectonic setting. LA-ICP-MS U–Pb geochronology reveals that the medium- to coarse-grained and medium- to fine-grained syenogranites have crystallization ages of 878 ± 4.2 Ma and 880 ± 6.5 Ma, respectively. These syenogranites have aluminum saturation index (A/CNK) values ranging from 0.79 to 1.06, indicating quasi-aluminous to weakly peraluminous compositions, and are classified as calc-alkaline I-type granites. The geochemical indicators of these rocks, including Mg# (44–48, mean 46), Zr/Hf (40.07), Nb/La (0.4), and zircon εHf(t) values (+9.2 to +10.9), collectively indicate a depleted lithospheric mantle source. The mantle source was metasomatized by subduction-derived fluids and sediment melts prior to partial melting as evidenced by their higher Mg#, elevated Ba content, and distinctive ratios (Rb/Y, Nb/Y, Th/Yb, Th/Sm, Th/Ce, and Ba/La). Integrating regional data, this study confirms crust–mantle interaction along the northern Yangtze during the early Neoproterozoic, supporting a sustained subduction-related tectonic setting.
