Secondary lymphoma of the prostate is described as the involvement of the prostate gland by lymphomatous spread from a primary site. This condition is exceedingly rare and often presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The symptoms often mimic those of benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer, including LUTS (lower urinary tract symptoms) and even complete urinary retention. Here, we present a rare case of a 62-year-old male patient undergoing chemotherapy for stage IV mantle cell stomach lymphoma and subsequently secondary prostatic involvement. The patient presented with complete urinary retention, accompanied by biochemical (PSA = 11.7 ng/mL) and imaging (Magnetic Resonance Imaging-PIRADS V lesion) suspicion for prostate cancer. Histopathologic analysis of the MRI-targeted prostate fusion biopsy revealed secondary prostatic lymphoma. The chosen treatment was transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) for relief of symptoms, which significantly improved urinary function (postoperative IPSS = 5 and Qmax = 17 mL/s). This case underscores the importance of considering prostatic lymphoma in the differential diagnosis of bladder outlet obstruction, especially in patients with a known lymphoma history. This report also provides a focused review of the literature on secondary prostatic lymphoma, highlighting the diagnostic challenges, treatment options, and clinical outcomes. Full article

Introduction: Although lipomas are common benign tumors found in adults, lipomas of the bladder are extremely rare. Bladder lipomas are infrequently reported in the urologic literature, with only 19 cases published worldwide. These can present as a mass on cystoscopy and cause irritative voiding symptoms, depending on their location. Upon transurethral resection, seeing fat can be concerning for a perforation, as lipoma can be mistaken for extravesical fat. Hence, familiarity with this rare entity is of paramount importance for urologists to prevent unnecessary investigations and interventions that are needed in case of a true bladder perforation. Case presentation: This study presents a case of bladder lipoma in a 73-year-old male with end-stage renal disease who presented for pretransplant urologic evaluation due to microscopic hematuria and irritative lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). During cystoscopy, a bladder mass was seen, and a transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT) revealed bright yellow adipose tissue immediately underneath the bladder mucosa. Concerns about perforation were obviated when seeing intact detrusor muscle underneath, visually confirming the integrity of the bladder wall. The resection was completed, and the CT scan was re-read with the radiologist, which confirmed the presence of a lipoma that was missed pre-operatively due to patient’s oliguria and collapsed bladder. No catheter drainage or cystogram was performed based on these findings. Outcome: The patient healed without any complications. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a mature lipoma. The patient was cleared for transplant from a urologic standpoint and had a successful renal transplantation without delay. Discussion: This case documents the anomalous occurrence of a lipoma within the bladder and supports maintaining a broad differential, including liposarcoma, angiomyolipoma, and other non-malignant fatty tumors during the evaluation of a bladder mass. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a multifactorial condition that is highly prevalent and affects aging males. It frequently results in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and a reduced quality of life. While hormonal dysregulation and chronic inflammation have long been implicated in BPH pathogenesis, recent evidence highlights the role of physical activity in modulating prostate health. In this narrative review, evidence from quantitative studies examining the effect of exercise on BPH risk and symptom severity was first synthesized. Collectively, these studies suggest that regular physical activity is associated with a lower incidence and reduced progression of BPH. The potential mechanisms through which exercise may exert protective effects on the prostate were then explored. These include modulation of sympathetic nervous system activity, alterations in hormonal profiles (e.g., testosterone and insulin), suppression of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, and the promotion of autophagy within prostatic tissue. Central to these mechanisms is the role of myokines—signaling molecules secreted by skeletal muscle during exercise. Key myokines, such as irisin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and myostatin, are reviewed in the context of prostate health. These molecules regulate inflammatory pathways, metabolic processes, and tissue remodeling. For instance, exercise-induced reductions in myostatin are linked to improved insulin sensitivity and decreased fat accumulation, while elevated irisin and BDNF levels may exert anti-inflammatory and metabolic benefits relevant to BPH pathophysiology. Although direct causal evidence linking myokines to BPH is still emerging, their biological plausibility and observed systemic effects suggest a promising avenue for non-pharmacological intervention. Future research should focus on identifying the specific myokines involved, elucidating their molecular mechanisms within the prostate, and evaluating their therapeutic potential in clinical trials. Cadmium (Cd)-induced pulmonary toxicity is closely associated with ferroptosis, a regulated form of cell death characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation (LPO). Luteolin (Lut) is a natural flavonoid compound that exists in many plants. In this study, we used human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells to explore the impact of ferroptosis in the inhibition of Cd-induced BEAS-2B cells proliferation. BEAS-2B cells were exposed to Cd (5 μM) with/without Lut (10 μM), ferroptosis modulators (Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1)/Erastin), or nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) regulators (tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ)/ML385). Viability, iron content, reactive oxygen species (ROS), LPO, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) activity were assessed. Exposure to Cd significantly decreased cell viability, increased intracellular iron levels, ROS production, and LPO activity, while simultaneously reducing MMP and GSH-PX activity. Fer-1 mitigated Cd-induced cytotoxicity, but Erastin intensified these effects. Mechanistically, Cd exposure suppressed the Nrf2/Solute Carrier Family 7 Member 11 (SLC7A11)/glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) signaling pathway, which plays a crucial role in maintaining redox homeostasis. Activation of Nrf2 using TBHQ mitigated oxidative stress and upregulated the expression of key proteins within this pathway, while inhibition of Nrf2 with ML385 exacerbated cellular damage. Notably, Lut treatment could significantly alleviate Cd-induced cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and downregulation of Nrf2/SLC7A11/GPX4 proteins. These findings demonstrate that ferroptosis is a critical mechanism underlying Cd-mediated lung epithelial injury and identify Lut as a promising therapeutic candidate via its activation of Nrf2-driven antioxidant defense mechanisms. This study provides novel insights into molecular targets for the prevention and treatment of Cd-associated pulmonary disorders. Full article

Background/Objectives: For aging men experiencing lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), bladder diaries (BD) and uroflowmetry (UFM) are commonly used non-invasive diagnostic tools. However, bladder diaries often suffer from subjectivity and incomplete data, while traditional hospital-based uroflowmetry lacks convenience and repeatability. Therefore, there is a growing need for a user-friendly, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered at-home uroflow monitoring solution. This study aims to develop a novel, vibration-based home uroflowmetry system capable of recognizing uroflow curve patterns and measuring voiding parameters, and to compare its performance with other existing home-based uroflowmetry methods. Methods: Seventy-six male participants, all of whom provided informed consent, underwent uroflowmetry to assess voiding symptoms. An accelerometer affixed to the uroflowmeter’s urine container captured vibration signals, which were used to calculate the root mean square (RMS) values and maximum amplitude (Mmax). Simultaneously, the uroflowmeter recorded standard voiding parameters and generated uroflow curves. These vibration signals were then analyzed using a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify six distinct uroflow curve patterns, aiding in diagnostic evaluation. Results: Seventy-six participants’ voiding volume ranged from 50 mL to 690 mL (median [Q1, Q3]: 160 [70.00, 212.50] mL). The correlation analysis revealed positive correlations between the vibration signals and voiding parameters, including the voided volume and RMS (R = 0.768, p < 0.001), Qmax and Mmax (R = 0.684, p < 0.001), voiding time and signal time (R = 0.838, p < 0.001), time to Qmax and time to Mmax (R = 0.477, p < 0.001). AI pattern recognition demonstrated high accuracy with all three indicators (precision, recall, and F1 score) surpassing 0.97. Conclusions: This AI-assisted vibration-based home uroflowmetry enables accurate voiding parameter measurement and uroflow pattern recognition, showing high precision, recall, and F1-score. It might offer a convenient solution for continuous and subjective bladder monitoring outside clinical settings. Full article

Background and Objective: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urethral stricture (US) are common causes of lower urinary tract symptoms in ageing men, often requiring repeated interventions. Conventional treatments of US, such as urethrotomy and mechanical dilation, have high recurrence rates. The Optilume drug-coated balloon catheter system, which combines mechanical dilation with paclitaxel delivery, has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative. This systematic review assesses its efficacy and safety in the management of BPH and US. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed was conducted for studies published between August 2020 and October 2023. Eligible studies included randomised controlled trials (RCTs), cohort studies, and case reports evaluating Optilume’s therapeutic effects. Key outcomes analysed included symptom relief, urinary flow improvement, recurrence rates, and adverse events. Results: Seven studies met the inclusion criteria, including five on US and two on BPH. The ROBUST trial series demonstrated sustained improvements in urinary flow rates and symptom scores in US patients over follow-up periods of up to four years. The EVEREST-1 and PINNACLE trials reported significant symptom relief and preserved sexual function in BPH patients, with a favourable safety profile and minimal complications. Conclusions: Optilume appears to be a promising alternative to conventional endoscopic treatments for US and BPH, offering durable symptom relief with a low complication rate. Further long-term studies are required to confirm its efficacy and cost-effectiveness in routine clinical practice. Full article

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction. MetS is associated with increased intestinal permeability and dysbiosis. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of peanut shell extract (PSE) and luteolin (LUT) on the kidneys, colon, and ileum in a MetS-like murine model. Methods: Thirty-six male Slc6a14y/− mice were divided into four groups: low-fat diet (LFD), high-fat diet (HFD), HFD + 200 mg PSE/kg BW (PSE, p.o.), and HFD + 100 mg LUT/kg BW (LUT, p.o.) for 4 months. Outcome measures included glucose homeostasis, intestinal permeability, gut microbiome composition, and mRNA gene expression of mitochondrial homeostasis and inflammation/oxidative stress in the kidneys, colon, and ileum. Results: HFD resulted in glucose dysregulation with hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. PSE and LUT improved insulin tolerance and beta-cell function. PSE and LUT mitigated HFD-increased serum lipopolysaccharide-binding protein concentration. Perturbations in the gut microbiome were associated with HFD, and PSE or LUT reversed some of these changes. Specifically, Phocaeicola vulgatus was depleted by HFD and reverted by PSE or LUT. Relative to the LFD group, the HFD group (1) upregulated mitochondrial fusion (MFN1, MFN2, OPA1), mitophagy (TLR4, PINK1, LC3B), and inflammation (NFκB, TNFα, IL6), and (2) downregulated mitochondrial fission (FIS1, DRP1), biosynthesis (PGC1α, NRF1, NRF2, TFAM), electron transport chain (complex I), and antioxidant enzyme (SOD1) in the kidneys, colon, and ileum. Conclusions: PSE and LUT reversed such HFD-induced changes in the aforementioned gene expression levels. Full article

Background and Objectives: While α1-blockers like silodosin are the mainstay for treating lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), combination therapy with phytotherapeutics may provide enhanced symptom control. Xipag® is a novel formulation containing Graminex® G96 (pollen extract) and Teupol® 25P (teupolioside), offering anti-inflammatory and antiandrogenic effects. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Xipag® versus hexanic extract of Serenoa repens (HESr), both in combination with silodosin, in patients with LUTS/BPH. Materials and Methods: We conducted a single-center, prospective, observational, comparative study involving male patients with moderate-to-severe LUTSs undergoing treatment with silodosin. Patients were allocated to receive either Xipag® or HESr in addition to silodosin, with follow-up every 3 months for 12 months. Primary outcomes included changes in symptom scores such as IPSS, QoL, and functional improvements such as peak urinary flow rate (Qmax). Multivariable regression analyses were used to assess predictors of the response. Results: Patients receiving Xipag® showed significantly greater improvements in Qmax at all follow-up points (p < 0.05), with earlier and more sustained benefits compared to the HESr group. QoL index scores and PSA levels were also significantly better in the Xipag® group starting from month six onward. IPSS scores improved in both groups but were significantly lower in the Xipag® group only at 12 months (p = 0.04). No differences in erectile function (IIEF-5) or adverse events were observed. Conclusions: Xipag® in combination with silodosin provides superior improvement in urinary flow, symptom-related QoL, and PSA reduction compared to HESr plus silodosin, with a favorable safety profile. These findings support the use of multi-target nutraceuticals like Xipag® as a valuable adjunct in the management of LUTS/BPH. Larger randomized trials are warranted to confirm these results and explore underlying mechanisms. Full article

The controller area network (CAN) protocol, widely used for in-vehicle communication, lacks built-in security features and is inherently vulnerable to various attacks. Numerous attack techniques against CAN have been reported, leading to intrusion detection systems (IDSs) tailored for in-vehicle networks. In this study, we propose a novel lightweight unsupervised IDS for CAN networks, designed for real-time, on-device implementation. The proposed autoencoder model was trained exclusively on normal data. A portion of the attack data was utilized to determine the optimal detection threshold using a Gaussian kernel density estimation function, while the frame count was selected based on error rate analysis. Subsequently, the model was evaluated using four types of attack data that were not seen during training. Notably, the model employs a single threshold across all attack types, enabling detection using a single model. Furthermore, the designed software model was optimized for hardware implementation and validated on an FPGA under a real-time CAN communication environment. When evaluated, the proposed system achieved an average accuracy of 99.2%, precision of 99.2%, recall of 99.1%, and F1-score of 99.2%. Furthermore, compared to existing FPGA-based IDS models, our model reduced the usage of LUTs, flip-flops, and power by average factors of 1/5, 1/6, and 1/11. Full article

Background and Objectives: Sarcopenia and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) are both prevalent among older adults and may share underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. However, their association has not been systematically quantified. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between sarcopenia and LUTSs, including the pooled estimates of prevalence and odds ratios (ORs), and to explore the influence of diagnostic definitions and study-level factors. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed and Embase for studies published between 1 January 2000 and 26 April 2025. This study adhered to PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251037459). Eligible observational studies reported LUTS prevalence or ORs in individuals with sarcopenia, low muscle strength (LMS), low lean mass (LLM), low gait speed (LGS), or sarcopenia risk identified by SARC-F (score ≥4). Pooled ORs and prevalence rates were calculated using a random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were performed based on sarcopenia definitions—Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) and European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP)—as well as LUTS subtypes and diagnostic components. Univariate meta-regression assessed associations with age, BMI, sex distribution, WHO region, and risk of bias. Results: Twenty-five studies comprising 84,484 participants were included. Sarcopenia was significantly associated with LUTSs (pooled OR = 1.78; 95% CI: 1.29–2.45; p < 0.001), with a pooled LUTS prevalence of 43.2% (95% CI: 26.9–61.0%). Stronger associations were observed in studies using AWGS diagnostic criteria (OR = 2.24; 95% CI: 1.41–3.56; p = 0.001), in those evaluating severe sarcopenia (OR = 1.66; 95% CI: 1.03–2.68; p = 0.038), and in institutionalized populations (OR = 3.68; 95% CI: 2.18–6.24; p < 0.001) compared to community-dwelling populations (OR = 1.43; 95% CI: 1.06–1.92; p = 0.018). Sarcopenia risk identified by SARC-F (score ≥4) showed the strongest association with LUTSs (OR = 3.20; 95% CI: 1.92–5.33; p < 0.001). Significant associations were also found for LLM (OR = 1.52; 95% CI: 1.19–1.95; p = 0.001) and LGS (OR = 1.37; 95% CI: 1.06–1.76; p = 0.015), but not for LMS (OR = 0.94; 95% CI: 0.47–1.89; p = 0.871). Exploratory analyses comparing LLM diagnostic modalities—including standardized criteria (ASMI, ASM/BMI), imaging-based methods (SMI, PMA), and surrogate measures (calf circumference)—revealed no significant differences (all p > 0.05). Heterogeneity was high (I2 > 90%). Egger’s test indicated no evidence of publication bias (p = 0.838), and trim-and-fill analysis did not affect the pooled estimates. Conclusions: Sarcopenia—particularly in its severe forms—is significantly associated with LUTSs. Additionally, individuals who screened positive for sarcopenia using the SARC-F tool demonstrated a heightened risk of LUTSs. Subgroup analyses revealed a stronger association in institutionalized populations, suggesting that care setting may modify risk. These findings underscore the importance of assessing muscle health in older adults with urinary symptoms. Standardization of diagnostic criteria and longitudinal studies are needed to clarify causality and guide targeted interventions. Full article

We propose a probabilistic shaping (PS) scheme based on a single-layer lookup table (LUT) that employs only one LUT for symbol mapping while achieving favorable system performance. This scheme reduces the average power of the signal by adjusting the symbol distribution using a specialized LUT architecture and a flexible shaping proportion. The simulation results indicate that the proposed PS scheme delivers performance comparable to that of the conventional constant-composition distribution-matching-based probabilistic shaping (CCDM-PS) algorithm. Specifically, it reduces the bit error rate (BER) from 1.2376 ×104 to 6.3256 ×105, corresponding to a 48.89% improvement. The radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) effectively compensates for nonlinear distortions and further enhances transmission performance due to its simple architecture and strong capacity for nonlinear learning. In this work, we combine lookup-table-based probabilistic shaping (LUT-PS) with RBFNN-based nonlinear equalization for the first time, completing the transmission of 16-QAM OFDM signals over a photonic terahertz-over-fiber system operating at 400 GHz. Simulation results show that the proposed approach reduces the BER by 81.45% and achieves a maximum Q-factor improvement of up to 23 dB. Full article

Wake steering has emerged as a promising strategy to mitigate turbine wake losses, with existing research largely focusing on the aerodynamic optimization of yaw angles. However, many prior approaches rely on static look-up tables (LUTs), offering limited adaptability to real-world wind variability and leading to non-optimal results. More importantly, these energy-focused strategies overlook the mechanical implications of frequent yaw activities in pursuit of the maximum power output, which may lead to premature exhaustion of the yaw system’s design life, thereby accelerating structural degradation. This study proposes a supervisory control framework that balances energy capture with structural reliability through three key innovations: (1) upstream-based inflow sensing for real-time capture of free-stream wind, (2) fatigue-responsive optimization constrained by a dynamic actuation quota system with adaptive yaw activation, and (3) a bidirectional threshold adjustment mechanism that redistributes unused actuation allowances and compensates for transient quota overruns. A case study at an offshore wind farm shows that the framework improves energy yield by 3.94%, which is only 0.29% below conventional optimization, while reducing yaw duration and activation frequency by 48.5% and 74.6%, respectively. These findings demonstrate the framework’s potential as a fatigue-aware control paradigm that balances energy efficiency with system longevity. Full article

Neural networks are increasingly attractive for digital predistortion applications due to their demonstrated superior performance. This is mainly attributed to their ability to capture the intrinsic traits of nonlinear systems. This paper presents a novel hybrid predistorter labeled as the look-up table assisted bidirectional long-short term memory (BiLSTM) neural network (LUT-A-BiNN) that combines a neural network cascaded with a look-up table in a manner that both sub-models complement each other. The main motivation in using this two-box arrangement is to eliminate the highly nonlinear static distortions of the PA with the look-up table, allowing the neural network to focus on the compensation of the dynamic distortions. The proposed predistorter is experimentally validated using 5G test signals. The results demonstrate the ability of the proposed predistorter to achieve a 5 dB enhancement in the adjacent channel leakage ratio when compared to its single-box counterpart (BiLSTM neural network predistorter) while maintaining the signal-agnostic performance of the BiLSTM predistorter. Prediction of Exotic Hardwood Carbon for Use in the New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme

New Zealand’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) enables growers to earn payments by accumulating carbon units as their forests increase in carbon stock. For forests of less than 100 hectares, growers use predefined lookup tables (LUTs) to estimate carbon stock changes based on forest age. Using a combination of growth models and productivity surfaces, underpinned by data from 1360 growth plots, the objective of this study was to provide draft updates for the Exotic Hardwoods LUTs. The updated LUTs were based on growth rates of three Eucalyptus species, E. fastigata, E. regnans, and E. nitens, which comprise a major proportion of the Exotic Hardwoods forest type in New Zealand. Carbon tables were first derived for each species. Then, a draft LUT was generated for New Zealand’s North Island, using a weighted average of the species-specific tables based on the relative importance of the species, while the E. nitens table was used for the South Island where this is the predominant Eucalyptus species. Carbon stock predictions at ages 30 and 50 years were 820 and 1340 tonnes CO2 ha−1 for the North Island, and slightly higher at 958 and 1609 tonnes CO2 ha−1 for the South Island. Regional variation was significant, with the highest predicted carbon in Southland (1691 tonnes CO2 ha−1 at age 50) and lowest in Hawke’s Bay/Southern North Island (1292 tonnes CO2 ha−1). Predictions closely matched the current Exotic Hardwood LUT to age 20 years but exceeded it by up to 45% at age 35. Growth and carbon sequestration rates were similar to other established Eucalyptus species and slightly higher than Acacia species, though further research is recommended. These findings suggest that the three Eucalyptus species studied here could serve as the default species for a revised Exotic Hardwoods LUT and that the current national tables could be regionalised. However, the government may consider factors other than the technical considerations outlined here when updating the LUTs. Full article

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely used in geotechnical engineering. Real-time detection in complex geological environments, combined with the strict power constraints of embedded devices, makes Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platforms ideal for accelerating CNNs. Conventional parallelization strategies in FPGA-based accelerators often result in imbalanced resource utilization and computational inefficiency due to varying kernel sizes. To address this issue, we propose a customized heterogeneous hybrid parallel strategy and refine the bit-splitting approach for Digital Signal Processor (DSP) resources, improving timing performance and reducing Look-Up Table (LUT) consumption. Using this strategy, we deploy the lightweight YOLOv5n network on an FPGA platform, creating a high-speed, low-power subsurface geotechnical defect-detection system. A layer-wise quantization strategy reduces the model size with negligible mean average precision (mAP) loss. Operating at 300 MHz, the system reduces LUT usage by 33%, achieves a peak throughput of 328.25 GOPs in convolutional layers, and an overall throughput of 157.04 GOPs, with a power consumption of 9.4 W and energy efficiency of 16.7 GOPs/W.
