Cold-formed steel (CFS) channel beams are increasingly used as primary structural elements in modern construction due to their lightweight and high-strength characteristics. To accommodate building services, these members often feature perforations—typically circular and unstiffened—produced by punching. Recent studies indicate that adding edge stiffeners, particularly around circular web openings, can improve flexural strength. Extending this idea, attention has shifted to hexagonal web perforations; however, limited research exists on the bending performance of hexagonal cold-formed steel channel beams (HCFSBs). This study presents a detailed nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis to evaluate and compare the flexural behaviour of HCFSBs with unstiffened (HUH) and edge-stiffened (HEH) hexagonal openings. The FE models were validated against experimental results and expanded to include a comprehensive parametric study with 810 simulations. Results show that HEH beams achieve, on average, a 10% increase in moment capacity compared to HUH beams. However, when evaluated using current Direct Strength Method (DSM) provisions, moment capacities were underestimated by up to 47%, particularly in cases governed by lateral–torsional or distortional buckling. A reliability analysis confirmed that the proposed design equations yield accurate and dependable strength predictions. Full article

Effective real-time control systems require fast and accurate models. The roll bending models presented in this paper are proposed for a real-time control system for the design of the rolling schedule. The roll bending, with other factors, defines the shape of the roll surface, its convexity, and finally the shape of the final product of the flat rolling, its convexity, and its flatness. This paper presents accurate finite element (FE) models for a four-high mill. The models serve to obtain accurate solutions to the problem of roll bending, taking into account the rolling force, width of the rolling sheet (strip), initial shape of the roll surface, and the anti-bending force. The results of the FE simulation are used to train three models developed on the basis of the neural network (NN) for the solution of one direct and two inverse tasks. The pre-trained NN model gives accurate results and is faster than the FE model (FEM). The calculation time on a personal computer for one case of 3D FEM is 1 to 2 min, for 2D FEM it is 1 s, and for NN it is less than 1 ms. The results can be immediately used by other models of the real-time control system. A novelty of the research presented in the paper is the creation of complex applications of the FE method and an NN as a reduced-order model (ROM) for prediction of roll bending and calculation of sheet (strip) convexity, rolling, and anti-bending forces to obtain the required convexity. Effective real-time control systems require fast and accurate models. The thermal profile models of the rolls presented in this paper are proposed for a real-time control system for the design of the rolling schedule. The thermal profile of the roll defines the shape of the roll surface, its convexity, and, finally, the shape of the final product of the flat rolling, its convexity, and flatness. This paper presents accurate semi-analytical and finite element (FE) models, which serve to obtain an accurate solution of the joint thermal and mechanical problem, that is, heat transfer and thermal expansion. The results of the FE simulation are used for training the developed thermal model based on the neural network (NN) and for the creation of a dynamic reduced order model (ROM) of the roll surface profile. The pre-trained NN model gives accurate results and is faster than the FE model, but the model is not very useful for fast calculations in a real-time control system, mainly because the temperature distribution inside the rolls is not explicitly used in further calculations. In contrast, the ROM is fast and accurate and provides surface-shaped results that can be immediately used by other models of the real-time control system. The results of the simulation of the real process are also shown. Calculations of the roll campaign (more than 9 h) by the FEM model last several hours, while by the ROM less than 20 s. Full article

Optimization of Structural Parameters for 304 Stainless Steel Specific Spiral Taps Based on Finite Element Simulation

To address the issues of large errors, low accuracy, and time-consuming simulations in finite element (FE) models of tapping processes, which hinder the identification of optimal structural parameters, this study integrates FE simulation with experimental testing to optimize the structural parameters of spiral taps specifically designed for stainless steel. Initially, single-factor experiments were conducted to analyze the influence of mesh parameters on experimental outcomes, leading to the identification of optimal mesh coefficients. Subsequently, the accuracy of the FE tapping simulation model was validated by comparing trends in axial force, torque, and chip morphology between simulations and actual tapping experiments. Orthogonal experimental design combined with entropy weight analysis and range analysis was then employed to conduct FE simulations. The results indicated that the optimal structural parameter combination is a helix angle of 43°, cone angle of 19°, and cutting edge relief amount of 0.18 mm. Finally, based on this combination, optimized spiral taps were manufactured and subjected to comparative performance testing. The results demonstrated significant improvements: the average maximum axial force decreased by 33.22%, average maximum torque decreased by 13.41%, average axial force decreased by 38.22%, and average torque decreased by 24.87%. Error analysis comparing corrected simulation results with actual tapping tests revealed axial force and torque error rates of 5.04% and 0.24%, respectively. Full article

The simulation analysis of a novel stay-in-place formwork (SIPF) beam reinforced with perforated steel pipe skeleton was conducted. The SIPF beam consists of a modified magnesium oxysulfide mortar (MMOM) formwork, a square steel pipe skeleton with holes dug on the sides and top, and cast-in-place concrete. The finite element (FE) analysis model of the SIPF beam was established by using the ABAQUS CAE 2021 software, and simulation analysis was conducted with the shear span ratio (SSR), the distance between the remaining steel strips, and the strength of concrete as the variation parameters. The results show that the stiffness and shear capacity of the SIPF beam decrease with the increase in SSR and increase with the decrease in strip spacing. Under the same conditions, when the concrete strength grade is increased from C30 to C50, the shear bearing capacity of the SIPF beam increases by 11.8% to 16.2%. When the spacing of the steel strips is reduced from 200 mm to 150 mm, the shear bearing capacity can be increased by 12.7% to 31.5%. When the SSR increases from 1.5 to 3.0, the shear bearing capacity decreases by 26.9% to 37.3%. Moreover, with the increase in the SSR, the influence of the steel strip spacing on the shear bearing capacity of the SIPF beam improves, while the influence of the concrete strength on the shear bearing capacity decreases. Taking parameters such as SSR, steel strip spacing, and concrete strength as variables, the influence of steel pipe constraining the core concrete on the shear bearing capacity was considered. The calculation formula for the shear bearing capacity of the SIPF beam with perforated steel pipe skeleton was established. The calculation results fit well with the laboratory test and simulation test results and can be used for the design and calculation of engineering structures. Full article

Aging railroad bridges present complex challenges due to advancing deterioration and outdated design assumptions. This study develops a comprehensive analytical approach for assessing an aging steel truss railroad bridge through finite element (FE) modeling, sensitivity analysis, and model updating, supported by field testing. An initial FE model of the bridge was created based on original drawings and field observations. Field testing using a laser Doppler vibrometer captured the bridge’s dynamic response (vibrations and deflections) under regular train traffic. Key structural parameters (material properties, section properties, support conditions) were identified and varied in a sensitivity analysis to determine their influence on model outputs. A hybrid sensitivity analysis combining log-normal sampling and a genetic algorithm (GA) was employed to explore the parameter space and calibrate the model. The GA optimization tuned the FE model parameters to minimize discrepancies between simulated results and field measurements, focusing on vertical deflections and natural frequencies. The updated FE model showed significantly improved agreement with observed behavior; for example, vertical deflections under a representative train were matched within a few percent, and natural frequencies were accurately reproduced. This validated model provides a more reliable tool for predicting structural performance and fatigue life under various loading scenarios. The results demonstrate that integrating field data, sensitivity analysis, and model updating can greatly enhance the accuracy of structural assessments for aging railroad bridges, supporting more informed maintenance and management decisions. Biocompatible vaterite microspheres, renowned for their porous structure, are promising carriers for magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in biomedical applications such as targeted drug delivery and diagnostic imaging. Precise control over the magnetic moment of individual microspheres is crucial for these applications. This study employs widefield quantum diamond microscopy to map the stray magnetic fields of individual vaterite microspheres (3–10 μm) loaded with Fe3O4 MNPs of varying sizes (5 nm, 10 nm, and 20 nm). By analyzing over 35 microspheres under a 222 mT external magnetizing field, we measured peak-to-peak stray field amplitudes of 41 ± 1 μT for 5 nm and 10 nm superparamagnetic MNPs, reflecting their comparable magnetic response, and 12 ± 1 μT for 20 nm ferrimagnetic MNPs, due to distinct magnetization behavior. Finite-element simulations confirm variations in MNP distribution and magnetization uniformity within the vaterite matrix, with each microsphere encapsulating thousands of MNPs to generate its magnetization. This high-resolution magnetic imaging approach yields critical insights into MNP-loaded vaterite, enabling optimized synthesis and magnetically controlled systems for precision therapies and diagnostics. Modern aerospace engineering places increasing emphasis on materials that combine low weight with high mechanical performance. Fiber metal laminates (FMLs), which merge metal layers with fiber-reinforced composites, meet this demand by delivering improved fatigue resistance, impact tolerance, and environmental durability, often surpassing the performance of their constituents in demanding applications. Despite these advantages, inspecting such thin, layered structures remains a significant challenge, particularly when they are difficult or impossible to access. As with any new invention, they always come with challenges. This study examines the effectiveness of the fundamental anti-symmetric Lamb wave mode (A0) in detecting weak interfacial defects within Carall laminates, a type of hybrid fiber metal laminate (FML). Delamination detectability is analyzed in terms of strong wave dispersion observed downstream of the delaminated sublayer, within a region characterized by acoustic distortion. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model is developed to simulate mode trapping and full-wavefield local displacement. The approach is validated by reproducing experimental results reported in prior studies, including the author’s own work. Results demonstrate that the A0 mode is sensitive to delamination; however, its lateral resolution depends on local position, ply orientation, and dispersion characteristics. Accurately resolving the depth and extent of delamination remains challenging due to the redistribution of peak amplitude in the frequency domain, likely caused by interference effects in the acoustically sensitive delaminated zone. Additionally, angular scattering analysis reveals a complex wave behavior, with most of the energy concentrated along the centerline, despite transmission losses at the metal-composite interfaces in the Carall laminate. The wave interaction with the leading and trailing edges of the delaminations is strongly influenced by the complex wave interference phenomenon and acoustic mismatched regions, leading to an increase in dispersion at the sublayers. Analytical dispersion calculations clarify how wave behavior influences the detectability and resolution of delaminations, though this resolution is constrained, being most effective for weak interfaces located closer to the surface. This study offers critical insights into how the fundamental anti-symmetric Lamb wave mode (A0) interacts with delaminations in highly attenuative, multilayered environments. It also highlights the challenges in resolving the spatial extent of damage in the long-wavelength limit. The findings support the practical application of A0 Lamb waves for structural health assessment of hybrid composites, enabling defect detection at inaccessible depths. Full article

Aero-engine casings with excellent impact resistance are a practical requirement for ensuring the safe operation of aero-engines. In this paper, we report on numerical simulations of broken rotating blades impacting aluminum honeycomb sandwich casings under different temperatures and optimization of structural parameters. Firstly, an impact test system with adjustable temperature was established. Restricted by the temperature range of the strain gauge, ballistic impact tests were carried out at 25 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C. Secondly, a finite element (FE) model including a pointed bullet and an aluminum honeycomb sandwich plate was built using LS-DYNA. The corresponding simulations of the strain–time curve and damage conditions showed good agreement with the test results. Then, the containment capability of the aluminum honeycomb sandwich aero-engine casing at different temperatures was analyzed based on the kinetic energy loss of the blade, the internal energy increment of the casing, and the containment state of the blade. Finally, with the design objectives of minimizing the casing mass and maximizing the blade kinetic energy loss, the structural parameters of the casing were optimized using the multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). The present study intends to assess the ratcheting response of SA508 and SA333 steel alloys subjected to asymmetric loading cycles at various operating temperatures of 298, 573, and 623K through a hardening framework developed by Ahmadzadeh–Varvani (A-V) and the finite element analysis structured by the Chaboche hardening model (CH) in the ANSYS software program. The dynamic recovery terms in the A-V and CH hardening framework consisted of temperature-dependent parameters and functions to address the dynamic strain aging (DSA) phenomenon at high temperatures of 573 and 623 K. The DSA phenomenon reported at elevated temperatures was attributed to the interactions of solute atoms and dislocations with a certain temperature, resulting in higher material strength and lower ratcheting deformation. The coefficients of these frameworks were analytically determined through stress–strain hysteresis loops obtained from the strain-controlled cyclic tests. The FE analysis was applied to numerically evaluate backstress evolution through use of the CH model. Two popular nonlinear brick and tetrahedron element types were examined to study the convergence of the elemental system with various numbers of elements. This ensured the independence of the simulated results from the number of elements and their convergence. The simulated ratcheting responses for brick and tetrahedron solid elements were compared to those predicted analytically by the A-V hardening rule and experimentally measured values. The predicted and simulated ratcheting data were found to be in good agreement with the measured data. The predicted and simulated ratcheting results generated using the A-V and FEA approaches showed R2 values of 0.96 and 0.85, respectively, when compared with the experimental data. Full article

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars have great potential to replace steel bars in the design of reinforced concrete (RC) beams since they have numerous advantages such as high tensile strength and good corrosion resistance. Therefore, many studies including experiments and numerical simulations have focused on the behavior of FRP RC beams. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of previous studies is conducted to provide a thorough understanding about the behavior, the design, and the limitations of FRP RC beams. Particularly, experimental studies on FRP RC beams are collected and reviewed. In addition, the numerical analysis of FRP beams including the finite element (FE) analysis, the discrete element (DE) analysis, and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) is summarized. Moreover, the international standards for the design of FRP RC beams are presented and evaluated. Through the review of previous studies, 93 tested specimens are collected. They can be a great source of reference for other studies. In addition, it has been found that the studies on the continuous beams and deep beams reinforced with FRP bars are still limited. In addition, more studies using DE analysis and AI/ML to analyze the response of FRP RC beams under loading conditions should be conducted. Full article

A novel approach to estimating the absorbed energy (toughness) in a uniaxial tensile test with only knowledge of the microstructure is presented. The flow behavior of each Dual-Phase (DP) steel grade is predicted using idealized Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) up to uniform elongation. To estimate the flow behavior beyond uniform elongation, the stress-modified fracture strain in a non-local damage model was implemented in Abaqus. Damage parameters were calibrated using Finite Element (FE) simulations of purely ferritic tensile specimens. The damage parameters remained unchanged, except for the coefficient of triaxiality. This coefficient was adjusted based on the average triaxiality of ferrite elements at the instability point of the uniaxially loaded RVEs for each DP steel grade. The proposed approach comprises two steps: micron-sized RVEs to predict the flow behavior up to the point of uniform elongation and the average triaxiality and full-scale tensile-test simulations to predict the rest of the curves. The results show that the damage parameters calibrated for high-strain ferrite effectively estimate the absorbed energy during failure in tension tests. This approach is also geometry-independent; varying the geometry of the tensile specimen, including miniature or notched specimens, still yields predicted absorbed energies that are in good agreement with the experimental results. This study investigated the hot flow behaviors of Ti-6Al-4V at temperatures ranging from 800 to 900 °C and heating rates ranging from 0.1 to 10 °C/s. These were tested via Gleeble hot tensile experiments, and the grain size and phase evolution were quantitatively characterized via EBSD and XRD. The results suggest that a higher heating rate decreases the β-phase transformation and dislocation density and inhibits grain coarsening, leading to better formability. The heating rate was introduced into the viscoplastic constitutive model for the first time to achieve accurate predictions of the microstructure and hot flow behavior under different heating rates. The prediction accuracy of the hot flow behavior and phase volume fraction reaches 92.93% and 94.97%. The current-assisted hot stamping experiments and finite element (FE) simulations of Ti-6Al-4V irregular cross-section components were carried out at temperatures of 800 and 900 °C and at heating rates of 1 and 3 °C/s. The results show that the rapidly heated formed components exhibit better thickness uniformity and yield strength. The FE simulation guided by the optimized constitutive model has achieved a 96.96% and 92.76% prediction accuracy for the thickness distribution and β-phase volume fraction, respectively. ANN and RF Optimized by Hunter–Prey Algorithm for Predicting Post-Blast RC Column Morphology

The drilling and blasting method is commonly employed for the rapid demolition of outdated buildings by destroying key structural components and inducing progressive collapse. The residual bearing capacity of these components is governed by the deformation morphology of the longitudinal reinforcement, characterized by bending deflection and exposed height. This study develops and validates a finite element (FE) model of a reinforced concrete (RC) column subjected to demolition blasting. By varying concrete compressive strength, the yield strength of longitudinal reinforcement, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and the shear reinforcement ratio, 45 FE models are established to simulate the post-blast morphology of longitudinal reinforcement. Two databases are created: one containing 45 original simulation cases, and an augmented version with 225 cases generated through data augmentation. To predict bending deflection and the exposed height of longitudinal reinforcement, artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF) models are optimized using the hunter–prey optimization (HPO) algorithm. Results show that the HPO-optimized RF model trained on the augmented database achieves the best performance, with MSE, MAE, and R2 values of 0.004, 0.041, and 0.931 on the training set, and 0.007, 0.057, and 0.865 on the testing set, respectively. Sensitivity analysis reveals that the yield strength of longitudinal reinforcement has the most significant impact, while the shear reinforcement ratio has the least influence on both output variables. The partial dependence plot (PDP) analysis indicates that the ratio of shear reinforcement has the most significant impact on the deformation of longitudinal reinforcement. Full article

Vehicle collisions with street lighting poles generate extremely high impact forces, often resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Therefore, enhancing the structural resilience of pole bases is a critical engineering objective. This study investigates a comprehensive dynamic analysis conducted with respect to base material behavior and energy absorption of GFRP lighting pole structures under impact loads. A finite element (FE) model of a 5 m-tall tapered GFRP pole with a steel base sleeve, base plate, and anchor bolts was developed. A 500 kg drop-weight impact at 400 mm above the base simulated vehicle collision conditions. The model was validated against experimental data, accurately reproducing the observed failure mode and peak force within 6%. Parametric analyses explored variations in pole diameter, wall thickness, base plate size and thickness, sleeve height, and anchor configuration. Results revealed that geometric parameters—particularly wall thickness and base plate dimensions—had the most significant influence on energy absorption. Doubling the wall thickness reduced normalized energy absorption by approximately 76%, while increases in base plate size and thickness reduced it by 35% and 26%, respectively. Material strength and anchor bolt configuration showed minimal impact. These findings underscore the importance of optimizing pole geometry to enhance crashworthiness. Controlled structural deformation improves energy dissipation, making geometry-focused design strategies more effective than simply increasing material strength. This work provides a foundation for designing safer roadside poles and highlights areas for further exploration in base configurations and connection systems. Full article
