Urban infrastructure, such as water supply networks, sewage systems, and electricity networks, is essential for the functioning of cities and, consequently, for the well-being of citizens. Despite its essentiality, the distribution of infrastructure in urban areas is not homogeneous, especially in cities in developing countries. Socially vulnerable areas often face significant deficiencies in sewage and road paving, exacerbating urban inequalities. In this regard, urban planners must consider the multiple elements of urban infrastructure and assess the compensation levels between them to reduce inequality effectively. In particular, the complexity of the problem necessitates considering the multidimensionality and heterogeneity of urban infrastructure. This complexity qualifies the operational framework of composite indicators as the natural solution to the problem. This study develops a new weighting system for the balanced expansion of urban infrastructures through composite indicators constructed by the Ordered Weighted Average operator. Implementing these weighting systems provides an opportunity to analyze urban infrastructure from different perspectives, offering transparency regarding the weaknesses and strengths of each perspective. This prevents unreliable representations from being used in decision-making and provides a solid basis for allocating investments in urban infrastructure. In particular, the study suggests that adopting weighting systems that prioritize intermediate values and avoid extreme values can lead to better resource allocation, helping to identify areas with deficient infrastructure and promoting more equitable urban development. Internal combustion engine vehicles damage the environment and public health by emitting toxic fumes, such as CO2 or CO and other trace compounds. The use of electric cars helps to reduce the emission of pollutants into the environment due to the use of batteries with no direct and local emissions. However, accidents of battery electric vehicles pose new challenges, such as thermal runaway. Such accidents can be serious and, in some cases, may result in uncontrolled overheating that causes the battery pack to spontaneously ignite. In particular, the most dangerous vehicles are heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), as they release a large amount of energy that generate high temperatures, poor visibility, and respiratory damage. This study aims to determine the potential consequences of large BEV fires in road tunnels using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Furthermore, a comparison between a BEV and an ICEV fire shows the differences related to the thermal and the toxic impact. Furthermore, the adoption of a longitudinal ventilation system in the tunnel helped to mitigate the BEV fire risk, keeping a safer environment for tunnel users and rescue services through adequate smoke control. This paper presents a data-driven energy management scheme for fuel cell and battery electric vehicles, formulated as a constrained optimal control problem. The proposed method employs a co-state network trained using real-time measurements to estimate the control law without requiring prior knowledge of the system model or a complete dataset across the full operating domain. In contrast to conventional reinforcement learning approaches, this method avoids the issue of high dimensionality and does not depend on extensive offline training. Robustness is demonstrated by treating uncertain and time-varying elements, including power consumption from air conditioning systems, variations in road slope, and passenger-related demands, as unknown disturbances. The desired state of charge is defined as a reference trajectory, and the control input is computed while ensuring compliance with all operational constraints. Validation results based on a combined driving profile confirm the effectiveness of the proposed controller in maintaining the battery charge, reducing fluctuations in fuel cell power output, and ensuring reliable performance under practical conditions. Comparative evaluations are conducted against two benchmark controllers: one designed to maintain a constant state of charge and another based on a soft actor–critic learning algorithm. Full article

The electrification of road vehicles is a relatively mature sector, while other areas of mobility, such as construction machinery, are just beginning their transition to electric solutions. This work presents the design and realization of an integrated drive system specifically developed for retrofitting fan drives in heavy machinery, like bulldozers and tractors, utilizing existing 48 VDC batteries. By replacing or complementing internal combustion and hydraulic technologies with electric solutions, significant advantages in efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and versatility can be achieved. Focusing on the fan drive system addresses the critical challenge of thermal management in high ambient temperatures and harsh environments, particularly given the high current requirements for 3kW-class applications. A sensorless architecture has been selected to enhance reliability by eliminating mechanical position sensors. The developed fan drive has been extensively tested both on a braking bench and in real-world applications, demonstrating its effectiveness and robustness. Future work will extend this prototype to electrify additional onboard hydraulic motors in these machines, further advancing the electrification of heavy-duty equipment and improving overall efficiency and environmental impact. The design and optimization of drive distribution strategies are critical for enhancing the performance of Formula Student electric racing cars, which face demanding operational conditions such as rapid acceleration, tight cornering, and variable track surfaces. Given the increasing complexity of racing environments and the need for adaptive control solutions, a multi-mode adaptive drive distribution strategy for four-wheel-drive Formula Student electric racing cars is proposed in this study to meet specialized operational demands. Based on the dynamic characteristics of standardized test scenarios (e.g., straight-line acceleration and figure-eight loop), two control modes are designed: slip-ratio-based anti-slip control for longitudinal dynamics and direct yaw moment control for lateral stability. A CarSim–Simulink co-simulation platform is established, with test scenarios conforming to competition standards, including variable road adhesion coefficients (μ is 0.3–0.9) and composite curves. Simulation results indicate that, compared to conventional PID control, the proposed strategy reduces the peak slip ratio to the optimal range of 18% during acceleration and enhances lateral stability in the figure-eight loop, maintaining the sideslip angle around −0.3°. These findings demonstrate the potential for significant improvements in both performance and safety, offering a scalable framework for future developments in racing vehicle control systems. The use of chloride-based deicing salts, particularly sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium chloride (CaCl2), is a common practice in cold regions for maintaining road safety during winter. However, the accumulation of salt residues in adjacent soils poses serious environmental threats, including reduced pH, increased electrical conductivity (EC), disrupted soil structure, and plant growth inhibition. This study aimed to evaluate the combined effect of activated carbon (AC) and Pennisetum alopecuroides, a salt-tolerant perennial grass, in alleviating salinity stress under deicer-treated soils. A factorial greenhouse experiment was conducted using three fixed factors: (i) presence or absence of Pennisetum alopecuroides, (ii) deicer type (NaCl or CaCl2), and (iii) activated carbon mixing ratio (0, 1, 2, 5, and 10%). Soil pH, EC, and ion concentrations (Na+, Cl, Ca2+) were measured, along with six plant growth indicators. The results showed that increasing AC concentrations significantly increased pH and reduced EC and ion accumulation, with the 5% AC treatment being optimal in both deicer systems. Plant physiological responses were improved in AC-amended soils, especially under CaCl2 treatment, indicating less ion toxicity and better root zone conditions. The interaction effects between AC, deicer type, and plant presence were statistically significant (p < 0.05), supporting a synergistic remediation mechanism involving both adsorption and biological uptake. Despite the limitations of short-term controlled conditions, this study offers a promising phytomanagement strategy using natural adsorbents and salt-tolerant plants for sustainable remediation of salt-affected soils in road-adjacent and urban environments. The widespread adoption of electric vehicles introduces significant challenges to power grid stability due to uncoordinated large-scale charging and discharging behaviors. By addressing these challenges, mobile energy storage systems emerge as a flexible resource. To maximize the synergistic potential of jointly scheduling electric vehicles and mobile energy storage systems, this study develops a collaborative scheduling model incorporating the prediction of geographically and chronologically varying distributions of electric vehicles. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-III is then applied to solve this model. Validation through case studies, conducted on the IEEE-69 bus system and an actual urban road network in southern China, demonstrates the model’s efficacy. Case studies reveal that compared to the initial disordered state, the optimized strategy yields a 122.6% increase in profits of the electric vehicle charging station operator, a 44.7% reduction in costs to the electric vehicle user, and a 62.5% decrease in voltage deviation. Furthermore, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-III exhibits superior comprehensive performance in multi-objective optimization when benchmarked against two alternative algorithms. Full article

The accelerated growth of the transport sector has increased oil consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, intensifying global environmental challenges. The electrification of transportation has emerged as a key strategy to achieve sustainability targets, with electric vehicles (EVs) expected to account for 50% of global car sales by 2035. However, widespread adoption requires smart infrastructure capable of enabling dynamic in-motion charging. In this context, Electric Road Systems (ERSs), particularly those based on Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technologies, offer a promising solution by transferring energy between road-embedded transmitters and vehicle-mounted receivers. This study assesses the structural response and service life of conventional and electrified asphalt pavement sections representative of the Spanish road network. Several standard pavement configurations were analyzed under heavy traffic (dual axles, 13 tons) using a hybrid approach combining mechanistic–empirical multilayer modeling and three-dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. The electrified designs integrate prefabricated charging units (CUs) placed at a 9 cm depth, disrupting the structural continuity of the pavement. The results reveal stress concentrations at the CU–asphalt interface and service life reductions of up to 50% in semiflexible pavements. Semirigid sections performed better, with average reductions close to 40%. These findings are based on numerical simulations of standard Spanish sections and do not include experimental validation. In the current context, where environmental concerns are gaining increased attention, the transition toward sustainable urban mobility stands out as a necessary and responsible step. Technological advancements over the past decade have brought private autonomous vehicles, particularly those defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers Levels 4 and 5, into focus as promising solutions for mitigating road congestion and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the extent to which Autonomous Vehicles can fulfill this potential depends largely on user acceptance, patterns of use, and their integration within broader green energy and sustainability policies. The present paper aims to develop an integrated conceptual model that links behavioral determinants to environmental outcomes, assessing how individuals’ intention to adopt private autonomous vehicles can contribute to sustainable urban mobility. The model integrates five psychosocial determinants—perceived usefulness, trust in technology, social influence, environmental concern, and perceived behavioral control—with contextual variables such as energy source, infrastructure availability, and public policy. These components interact to predict users’ intention to adopt AVs and their perceived contribution to urban sustainability. Methodologically, the study builds on a narrative synthesis of the literature and proposes a framework applicable to empirical validation through structural equation modeling (SEM). The model draws on established frameworks such as Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Theory of Planned Behavior, and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, incorporating constructs including perceived usefulness, trust in technology, social influence, environmental concern, and perceived behavioral control, constructs later to be examined in relation to key contextual variables, including the energy source powering Autonomous Vehicles—such as electricity from mixed or renewable grids, hydrogen, or hybrid systems—and the broader policy environment (regulatory frameworks, infrastructure investment, fiscal incentives, and alignment with climate and mobility strategies and others). The research provides relevant directions for public policy and behavioral interventions in support of the development of clean and smart urban transport in the age of automation. Full article

An orientation controllable radar cross section (RCS) enhancement surface is presented in this paper, which can be used to improve the road pile detectability of on-board microwave radar for autonomous driving system. In addition, the RCS enhancement orientation can be controlled in a specified direction without interfering with other microwave systems. We first designed a modified one-dimensional VanAtta array with adjustable phase for retrodirective backtracking the incoming electromagnetic waves, which can achieve wide-angle RCS enhancement. Then, we arranged the one-dimensional VanAtta array in another dimension forming a two-dimensional array, enabling adjustable orientation RCS enhancement due to the controllable phase of the reflected electromagnetic waves. We designed, manufactured, and tested a 4 × 8 array to validate the theory and assess the design’s feasibility. Finally, six orientation controllable VanAtta arrays were mounted on the outside surface of a cylinder road barrier, and measurements demonstrated that RCS enhancement of over 10 dB have been achieved compared to the same pile with perfect electric conductor surface. This study presents a comprehensive methodology for evaluating electric vehicle (EV) energy consumption by integrating coast down testing with standardized chassis dynamometer protocols under WLTP Class 3b and EPA driving cycles. Coast down tests were conducted to determine road load coefficients—critical for replicating real-world resistance profiles on a dynamometer. Energy usage data were measured using On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) and dynamometer measurements to assess power flow from the battery to the wheels. The results reveal that OBD-II consistently recorded higher cumulative energy usage, particularly under urban driving conditions, highlighting limitations in dynamometer responsiveness to transient loads and regenerative events. Notably, the WLTP low-speed cycle exhibited a significantly lower efficiency of 62.42%, with nearly half of the battery energy consumed by non-propulsion systems. In contrast, the EPA cycle demonstrated consistently higher efficiencies of 84.52% (low-speed) and 93.00% (high-speed). Interestingly, high-speed efficiencies between WLTP and EPA were nearly identical, despite differences in total energy consumption. These findings underscore the importance of aligning test protocols with actual driving conditions and demonstrate the effectiveness of combining coast down data with real-time diagnostics for robust EV performance assessments. There are significant emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere from the transportation industry. As a result, the idea that electric vehicles (EVs) offer a revolutionary way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and our reliance on rapidly depleting petroleum supplies has been put forward. EVs are becoming more common in many nations worldwide, and the rapid uptake of this technology is heavily reliant on the growth of charging stations. This is leading to a significant increase in their number on the road. This rise has created an opportunity for EVs to be integrated with the power system as a Demand Response (DR) resource in the form of an EV fast charging station (EVFCS). To allocate electric vehicle fast charging stations as a dynamic load for frequency control and on specific buses, this study included the optimal location for the EVFCS and the best controller selection to obtain the best outcomes as DR for various network disruptions. The optimal location for the EVFCS is determined by applying transient voltage drop and frequency nadir parameters to the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) location model as the first stage of this study. The second stage is to explore the optimal regulation of the dynamic EVFCS load using the PSO approach for the PID controller. PID controller settings are acquired to efficiently support power system stability in the event of disruptions. The suggested model addresses various types of system disturbances—generation reduction, load reduction, and line faults—when it comes to the Kundur Power System and the IEEE 39 bus system. The results show that Bus 1 then Bus 4 of the Kundur System and Bus 39 then Bus 1 in the IEEE 39 bus system are the best locations for dynamic EVFCS. Full article

Due to climate change, the electric vehicle (EV) industry is rapidly growing and drawing researchers interest. Driving conditions like mountainous roads, slick surfaces, and rough terrains illuminate the vehicles inherent nonlinearities. Under such scenarios, the behavior of power sources (fuel cell, battery, and super-capacitor), power processing units (converters), and power consuming units (traction motors) deviates from nominal operation. The increasing demand for FCHEVs necessitates control systems capable of handling nonlinear dynamics, while ensuring robust, precise energy distribution among fuel cells, batteries, and super-capacitors. This paper presents a DSMC strategy enhanced with Robust Uniform Exact Differentiators for FCHEV energy management. To optimally tune DSMC parameters, reduce chattering, and address the limitations of conventional methods, a hybrid metaheuristic framework is proposed. This framework integrates moth flame optimization (MFO) with the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) and Fractal Heritage Evolution, implemented through three spiral-based variants: MFOGSAPSO-A (Archimedean), MFOGSAPSO-H (Hyperbolic), and MFOGSAPSO-L (Logarithmic). Control laws are optimized using the Integral of Time-weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) criterion. Among the variants, MFOGSAPSO-L shows the best overall performance with the lowest ITAE for the fuel cell (56.38), battery (57.48), super-capacitor (62.83), and DC bus voltage (4741.60). MFOGSAPSO-A offers the most accurate transient response with minimum RMSE and MAE FC (0.005712, 0.000602), battery (0.004879, 0.000488), SC (0.002145, 0.000623), DC voltage (0.232815, 0.058991), and speed (0.030990, 0.010998)—outperforming MFOGSAPSO, GSA, and PSO. MFOGSAPSO-L further reduces the ITAE for fuel cell tracking by up to 29% over GSA and improves control smoothness. PSO performs moderately but lags under transient conditions. Simulation results conducted under EUDC validate the effectiveness of the MFOGSAPSO-based DSMC framework, confirming its superior tracking, faster convergence, and stable voltage control under transients making it a robust and high-performance solution for FCHEV. Energy and Exergy Analysis of Conventional Automobile Engines: Evaluation of Waste Heat Recovery Potential to Drive Parasitic Loads

Road transport plays a significant role in the economic growth of a country. Conventional internal combustion engines (ICEs) are widely used in automobiles, with an efficiency range of 25% to 35%, while the remaining energy is lost through cooling and exhaust gases. Additionally, two parasitic loads—the alternator and the air conditioning (AC) compressor—are driven by the ICE via a belt, further reducing efficiency. In this paper, energy and exergy analysis of the waste heat of exhaust gases has been performed for automobiles equipped with ICEs, i.e., R06A, F8B, K10B, 2NZ-FE, and 2ZR-FE, to evaluate their potential to drive these parasitic loads. The working cycles of these ICE models were simulated using a zero-dimensional MATLAB model based on fundamental governing equations. The results indicate that approximately 10–40 kW of energy is lost through exhaust gases under varying operating conditions for the examined ICEs. The average exhaust gas temperature and mass flow rate for these ICEs are approximately 900 K and 0.016 kg/s, respectively. Based on these findings, an E-turbine retrofit system is proposed to operate under these conditions, recovering exhaust energy to power the alternator and AC compressor. The results showed that the E-turbine generated 6.8 kW of mechanical power, which was converted into 4 kW of electrical power by the generator. This electrical power was used to supply the parasitic loads, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of ICE. Full article

In this study, to address the problems of the redundant safety and mass production of electro-mechanical braking (EMB) structures that are widely used in distributed drive electric vehicles (DDEV), we designed a compact dual-disc electromagnetic–EMB composite brake. The composite brake embeds an electromagnetic brake into the original friction disc, which realizes an organic combination of the friction and electromagnetic brakes. Electromagnetic braking has the advantages of no friction, a rapid response, and a high-speed braking effect, which can effectively improve the reliability and mechanical redundancy of composite braking systems. The braking system comprises regenerative, electromagnetic, and friction braking, which are typical hybrid systems. We designed a mode-switching control strategy for a composite braking system based on the hybrid control theory. MATLAB/Simulink were used to model each system and set different simulation conditions. The simulation results showed that, under different working conditions, the hybrid automata control strategy had a fast response speed, small overshoot error, and adapted to different road conditions. The feasibility of the redundant design of the electromagnetic–friction–regenerative composite braking structure and the rationality of the hybrid automata control strategy design were verified.
