As the demand for sustainable materials continues to grow, calcium caseinate (Cas) biopolymer films have emerged as promising alternatives to fossil-based plastics. However, their mechanical fragility and high-water sensitivity limit their application in packaging. In this study, we reinforced Cas films with zinc hydroxide nitrate (ZHN) using two incorporation methods: wet (ZHN-w) and dry (ZHN-d). We evaluated how each method affected the dispersion of the filler and, consequently, the functional properties of the films. To our knowledge, this is the first report of ZHN being used in biopolymeric films. Structural and morphological analyses showed better dispersion of ZHN in the wet-incorporated films. These samples exhibited a substantial increase in tensile strength, from 0.75 ± 0.00 MPa to 9.62 ± 2.45 MPa, along with a marked improvement in Young’s modulus. The films also became less soluble in water, more resistant to swelling, and structurally more cohesive. In antimicrobial tests, the ZHN-w films showed stronger inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus. Overall, this approach offers a simple and effective way to enhance protein-based films using food-safe materials, making them suitable for active and bio-based packaging applications. Full article

The increasing demand for food necessitates that agri-food systems adopt innovative techniques to enhance food production while optimizing the use of limited resources, such as water. In agriculture, hydrogels are being increasingly used to enhance water retention and reduce irrigation requirements. However, most of these materials are based on synthetic polymers that are not biodegradable. This raises serious environmental and health concerns, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable, biodegradable alternatives. Biomass-derived from agro-industrial waste presents a substantial potential for producing hydrogels, which can effectively function as water collectors and suppliers for crops. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the application of agro-industrial waste for the formulation of hydrogels. Additionally, it offers a critical analysis of the development of hydrogels utilizing natural and compostable materials. Agro-industrial and food waste, which are rich in hemicellulose and cellulose, have been utilized to enhance the mechanical properties and water absorption capacity of hydrogels. These biomaterials hold significant potential for the development of effective hydrogels in agricultural applications; they can be either hybrid or natural materials that exhibit efficacy in enhancing seed germination, improving water retention capabilities, and facilitating the controlled release of fertilizers. Natural hydrogels derived from agro-industrial waste present a sustainable technological alternative that is environmentally benign. Full article

Background: Understanding the mechanisms underlying dental pain caused by pulpitis in humans has led to the development of animal models, such as the rat, which enable the study of the mechanisms underlying inflammation; the use of these models is considered ethically justified when the anticipated scientific benefits outweigh the potential impacts on animals in the harm/benefit balance. Objective: To develop a rat model of mechanically induced pulpitis and to evaluate the potential impact on animal well-being. Methods: Pulpitis was mechanically induced in male Lewis rats (13–16 weeks, 350–400 g) which were anesthetized and endotracheally intubated. Following pulp exposure, the cavity was sealed with either amalgam (n = 10) or zinc phosphate cement (n = 10). Following recovery and return to their housing, behavioral assessments and histological evaluations using Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining were conducted in separate cohorts at two time points: 3 h and 5 days following the procedure. Results: A standardized model of mechanically induced pulpitis was established and verified clinically and by histopathological analysis, which showed evidence of the inflammatory process and revealed no statistically significant differences in the scoring of pain, discomfort, or distress, nor in the measurements of food and water consumption or body weight. Conclusions: The behavioral assessments conducted in this study supported the implementation of a safe and easily reproducible model for future research aimed at elucidating the mechanisms underlying pulp inflammation. In this work, a theoretical study on the combined effects of an external electric field and a nonresonant intense laser field on the electronic properties of a quantum dot with a truncated cone shape is presented. This quantum dot was made from a type-II CdTe/CdSe heterostructure (core/shell). Using the effective mass approximation with parabolic bands and the finite element method, the Schrödinger equation was solved to analyze the confined states of electron, hole, and exciton. This study demonstrates the potential of combining nonresonant intense laser and electric fields to control confinement properties in semiconductor nanodevices, with potential applications in optoelectronics and quantum mechanics-related technologies. Background: Growing disparities in development, governance, and logistics performance across countries pose challenges for global policymaking and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) monitoring. This study proposes a classification of 137 countries based on multiple structural dimensions. The dataset for 2023 includes six components of the Logistics Performance Index (LPI), six dimensions of the Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGIs), and four proxies of the Human Development Index (HDI). Methods: The Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) technique was used to reduce dimensionality and allow for meaningful clustering. Based on the reduced space, the K-means algorithm was employed to group countries with similar development characteristics. Results: The classification process allowed the identification of three distinct groups of countries, supported by a Hopkins statistic of 0.984 and an explained variance ratio of 87.3%. These groups exhibit structural differences in the quality of governance, logistics capacity, and social development conditions. Internal consistency checks and multivariate statistical analyses (ANOVA and MANOVA) confirmed the robustness and statistical significance of the clustering. Conclusions: The resulting classification offers a practical analytical tool for policymakers to design differentiated strategies aligned with national contexts. Furthermore, it provides a data-driven approach for comparative monitoring of the SDGs from an integrated and empirical perspective. Full article

This study evaluates the rheological behavior and mechanical performance of Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) mixes with varying superplasticizer dosages, aiming to optimize their use in pavement rehabilitation overlays on sloped surfaces. A reference self-compacting UHPFRC mix was modified by reducing the superplasticizer-to-binder ratio in incremental steps, and the resulting mixes were assessed through rheometry, mini-Slump, and Abrams cone tests. Key rheological parameters—static and dynamic yield stress, plastic viscosity, and thixotropy—were determined using the modified Bingham model. The results showed that reducing superplasticizer content increased yield stress and viscosity, enhancing thixotropic behavior while maintaining ultra-high compressive (≥130 MPa) and flexural strength (≥20 MPa) at 28 days. A predictive model was validated to estimate the critical yield stress needed for overlays on slopes. Among the evaluated formulations, the SP-2 mix met the stability and performance criteria and was successfully tested in a prototype overlay, demonstrating its viability for field application. This research confirms the potential of rheology-tailored UHPFRC as a high-performance solution for durable and stable pavement overlays in demanding geometric conditions. Full article

Invasive candidiasis (IC), characterized by the most common clinical manifestation of candidemia, is a fungal infection with a high mortality rate and a significant impact on global public health. It is estimated that each year there are between 227,000 and 250,000 hospitalizations related to IC, with more than 100,000 associated deaths. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LA&C), the absence of a standardized surveillance system has led to multicenter studies documenting incidences ranging from 0.74 to 6.0 cases per 1000 hospital admissions, equivalent to 50,000–60,000 hospitalizations annually, with mortality rates of up to 60% in certain high-risk groups. Armed conflicts and structural violence in LA&C cause forced displacement, the collapse of health systems, and poor living conditions—such as overcrowding, malnutrition, and lack of sanitation—which increase vulnerability to opportunistic infections, such as IC. Insufficient specialized laboratories, diagnostic technology, and trained personnel impede pathogen identification and delay timely initiation of antifungal therapy. Furthermore, the empirical use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and the limited availability of echinocandins and lipid formulations of amphotericin B have promoted the emergence of resistant non-albicans strains, such as Candida tropicalis, Candida parapsilosis, and, in recent outbreaks, Candidozyma auris. This study presents an algorithm for non-invasive blood pressure (BP) estimation in neonates using photoplethysmography (PPG), suitable for resource-constrained neonatal telecare platforms. Using the Windkessel model, the algorithm processes PPG signals from a MAX 30102 sensor, (Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated), based in San Jose, CA, USA) filtering motion noise and extracting cardiac cycle time and systolic time (ST). These parameters inform a derived blood flow signal, the input for the Windkessel model. Calibration utilizes average parameters based on the newborn’s post-conceptional age, weight, and gestational age. Performance was validated against readings from a standard non-invasive BP cuff at SES Hospital Universitario de Caldas. Two parameter estimation methods were evaluated. The first yielded root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 24.14 mmHg for systolic and 19.13 mmHg for diastolic BP. The second method significantly improved accuracy, achieving RMSEs of 2.31 mmHg and 5.13 mmHg, respectively. The successful adaptation of the Windkessel model to single PPG signals allows for BP calculation alongside other physiological variables within the telecare program. A device analysis was conducted to determine the appropriate device based on computational capacity, availability of programming tools, and ease of integration within an Internet of Things environment. This study paves the way for future research that focuses on parameter variations due to cardiovascular changes in newborns during their first month of life. Full article

The connection between sugar and ethanol prices is in line with concerns about the connection between oil and food prices. This paper studies the nexus between Colombia’s ethanol and sugar prices and the role that weather shocks play. Data on production and prices from the sugar mills and climate data on precipitation and temperature are used to estimate two ways to capture the relationship between prices and the role of weather shocks. First, a reduced-form estimation is made, where the study finds evidence of the pass-through of the international price to domestic prices and how high precipitation and temperature shocks increase prices. Then, the study addresses potential simultaneity problems between prices and estimates a VEC model with exogenous variables such as weather shocks. Results show that all domestic prices are affected by the international price, and the international price is affected by the white sugar domestic prices. Additionally, sugar prices react to shocks in ethanol prices, but ethanol prices do not react to shocks in sugar prices. Finally, weather shocks affect sugar prices, with daytime temperature shocks being the most damaging. Full article

Scrofuloderma, a cutaneous manifestation of tuberculosis, is a rare but clinically significant form of mycobacterial infection. It typically results from the local spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from an infected lymph node or bone area to the overlying skin. This disease is mainly characterized by chronic granulomatous inflammation, leading to skin ulcers and abscesses. Due to its nonspecific clinical presentation, scrofuloderma can mimic various dermatological conditions, making its diagnosis particularly challenging. This case report presents the clinical course of a patient who was positive for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) with a diagnosis of scrofuloderma, managed at a tertiary healthcare center, with follow-up before and after treatment. A literature review was also made, highlighting the importance of maintaining a high index of clinical suspicion and utilizing appropriate diagnostic methods to ensure timely diagnosis. Full article

Urban sustainability challenges demand integrated frameworks capable of addressing the dynamic, non-linear nature of cities. This study explores how the principles of the circular economy and complexity theory intersect to support systemic transformation in sustainable urban planning. Through a systematic literature review of 71 peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025, we analyze conceptual, methodological, and practical articulations across multiple thematic axes, including circular governance, urban metabolism, regenerative design, adaptive planning, digital integration, and environmental justice. Bibliometric and content analyses were conducted using Scopus metadata, VOSviewer for thematic clustering, and the StArt software (Version 3.4) to structure article selection. The findings reveal that circular economy provides practical tools for resource efficiency and regeneration, while complexity theory offers an adaptive framework to navigate uncertainty, emergent behaviors, and feedback dynamics. The synthesis suggests that their integration enables a more holistic and resilient approach to urban transformation. However, gaps remain in social inclusivity, long-term assessment, and the operationalization of complexity-informed planning. This study contributes to advancing a transdisciplinary agenda for circular and adaptive urban futures, offering insights for scholars, planners, and policymakers aiming to reconfigure cities within planetary boundaries. Although it is the wettest continent, droughts are a regular occurrence in South America. As the effects of anthropogenic influences, including climate change, become more pronounced, droughts are expected to increase in frequency and severity. The purpose of this study is to assess the relative drought vulnerability of the countries in South America. Each country is evaluated for drought exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity, and overall vulnerability. Sixteen drought-related indicators were used to measure the relative vulnerability of each country and to measure separate scores for exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity to identify what factor(s) contributed to a country’s vulnerability. The results indicate that Ecuador, a country with a high population and limited water resources, is the most vulnerable to drought in South America, followed by Colombia and Uruguay. Conversely, the country least vulnerable to drought is Guyana, followed by Suriname and Chile. Our analysis suggests that there are both geographic and as well as economic factors influencing the relative drought vulnerability of countries in South America. Full article

In this work, we proposed a dynamic inverse solution with spatio-temporal constraints of the nonlinear heat diffusion problem in 1D and 2D based on a regularized Gauss–Newton and Krylov subspace with a preconditioner. The preconditioner is computed by approximating the Jacobian of the nonlinear system at each Gauss–Newton iteration. The proposed approach is used for estimation of the initial value from measurements of the last value by considering spatial and spatio-temporal constraints. The system is compared to a dynamic Tikhonov inverse solution and generalized minimal residual method (GMRES) with and without a preconditioner. The system is evaluated under noise conditions in order to verify the robustness of the proposed approach. It can be seen that the proposed spatio-temporal regularized Gauss–Newton method with GMRES and a preconditioner shows better estimation results than the other methods for both spatial and spatio-temporal constraints. Amblyopia, commonly affecting children aged 0–6 years, results from disrupted visual processing during early development and often leads to reduced visual acuity in one eye. This study presents the development and preliminary usability assessment of a non-invasive ocular monitoring device designed to support oculomotor engagement and therapy adherence in amblyopia management. The system incorporates an interactive maze-navigation task controlled via gaze direction, implemented during monocular and binocular sessions. The device tracks lateral and anteroposterior eye movements and generates visual reports, including displacement metrics and elliptical movement graphs. Usability testing was conducted with a non-probabilistic adult sample (n = 15), including individuals with and without amblyopia. The System Usability Scale (SUS) yielded an average score of 75, indicating good usability. Preliminary tests with two adults diagnosed with amblyopia suggested increased eye displacement during monocular sessions, potentially reflecting enhanced engagement rather than direct therapeutic improvement. This feasibility study demonstrates the device’s potential as a supportive, gaze-controlled platform for visual engagement monitoring in amblyopia rehabilitation. Future clinical studies involving pediatric populations and integration of visual stimuli modulation are recommended to evaluate therapeutic efficacy and adaptability for early intervention. We present a dynamical systems approach to modeling nonlinear flood dynamics using 20 years of water level data from Durazno, Uruguay. Flood events are identified, and their periodicity and temporal distribution are analyzed in relation to rain gauge precipitation. Phase space reconstruction enables data-driven neural network modeling and quantification of the relationship between water level and soil moisture. Bifurcation diagrams define basin-specific flood thresholds, offering a mechanistic framework for improved flood forecasting and risk assessment. Full article
