Climate warming poses significant challenges for the sustainable management of natural water resources, making efficient planning and usage essential. This study evaluates the water requirements, irrigation demand, and rainfall deficits for two key vegetable crops, carrot and white cabbage, under projected climate scenarios RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 for the period 2031–2100. The analysis was conducted for Kraków and Rzeszów Counties in southern Poland using projected monthly temperature and precipitation data from the Klimada 2.0 portal. Potential evapotranspiration (ETp) during the growing season (May–October) was estimated using Treder’s empirical model and the crop coefficient method adapted for Polish conditions. The reference period for comparison was 1951–2020. The results reveal a significant upward trend in water demand for both crops, with the highest increases under the RCP 8.5 scenario–seasonal ETp values reaching up to 517 mm for cabbage and 497 mm for carrot. Rainfall deficits are projected to intensify, especially during July and August, with greater shortages in Rzeszów County compared to Kraków County. Irrigation demand varies depending on soil type and drought severity, becoming critical in medium and very dry years. These findings underscore the necessity of adapting irrigation strategies and water resource management to ensure sustainable vegetable production under changing climate conditions. The data provide valuable guidance for farmers, advisors, and policymakers in planning effective irrigation infrastructure and optimizing water-use efficiency in southern Poland. Full article

The combined effect of non-thermal plasma (NTP) and hydropriming on the germination performance and seedling characteristics of specific varieties of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica Plenck.) seeds after short-term storage is reported. Seeds were treated with NTP for 10 and 15 min, followed by hydropriming in distilled water for 24 h, and then stored for six months in the dark before evaluation. The treated cucumber seeds demonstrated a statistically significant enhancement in seed germination and seedling vitality indices. In contrast, broccoli seeds showed no significant improvement. The stimulatory effects observed in cucumber may be attributed to reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, which act as signaling molecules to promote stress tolerance and early growth. This study also highlights the potential of combined NTP treatment and hydropriming as a pre-sowing treatment for select crops, underscoring the need for species-specific optimization. The used, portable, and relatively inexpensive NTP device offers practical advantages for agricultural applications. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of intercropping Brassica oleracea. with three perennial grasses (Poa pratensis L., Lolium perenne L., and Festuca rubra L.) under varying levels of iron (Fe) availability (Fe0, Fe1 and Fe5) in nutrient solutions. The research focused on biomass accumulation, photosynthetic efficiency, root development, nutrient uptake, and oxidative stress response. In the absence of Fe, Brassica sp. exhibited chlorosis, reduced biomass, and increased ferric chelate reductase (FCR) enzyme activity as an adaptive response. Brassica plants intercropped with Poa sp. maintained higher chlorophyll (Chl) levels and photosystem II efficiency (Fv/Fm values), mitigating Fe deficiency effects. Catalase activity and polyphenol production varied with intercropping species, indicating differential stress response mechanisms. Intercropping improved Zn, Mn, and P accumulation, with Poa sp. facilitating greater Zn and Mn uptake. Intercropping Brassica sp. with specific grass species offers potential agronomic benefits by improving Fe use efficiency, mitigating stress, and enhancing nutrient uptake. Future research should focus on optimizing intercropping combinations for sustainable agricultural practices. Full article

To support the growing global population, sustainable farming methods like vertical farming must complement traditional agriculture. This study evaluated the effects of various nitrogen fertilizer application rates (N_low (1055.3 ppm), N_rec (1640.9 ppm), N_high (2811.3 ppm), and N_0 (469.9 ppm)) on organic kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala ‘Lacinato’) and Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. Vulgaris ‘Ruby/Rhubarb Red’), grown in a vertical growing system installed in a high tunnel during the spring and fall season of 2023 at the organic farm of Tennessee State University. Growth parameters studied included fresh weight, Brix, chlorophyll, plant height, and leaf count. Most parameters did not exhibit statistically significant differences (alpha = 0.05). However, consistent numerical trends and deviations were observed. Although not statistically significant, kale achieved the highest mean fresh weight in N_rec (688.08 g), and Swiss chard in N_high by spring (649.62 g). Among the few parameters, significant differences were observed for Swiss chard plant height (48.07 cm) and leaf count (47.25), with N_high during fall. Findings suggest that while definitive conclusions were limited, recommended nitrogen rates (N_rec) may enhance crop performance and contribute sustainable yields in resource constrained vertical farming systems. Further controlled studies are warranted to validate trends and refine nutrient strategies in vertical growing system. Full article

Zeugodacus cucuribitae (Coquillett) (Z. cucuribitae) is a global extremely invasive quarantine pest which has a wide host range of fruits and vegetables. At present, there are a few control measures for Z. cucuribitae, and deltamethrin and avermectin are commonly used. Among the hosts of Z. cucuribitae, Luffa acutangular, Luffa cylindrica, Sechium edule, Brassica oleracea var. botrytis, Musa nana, and Fragaria × ananassa are non-favored hosts. However, it is still not clear why these hosts are non-favored and whether there are any repellent components of Z. cucuribitae in these hosts. In this study, the components of these six hosts were collected from the literature, and the genes of odor and chemical sensation were determined from the genome of Z. cucuribitae. After the potential relationships between these components and genes were determined by molecular docking methods, the KEGG and GO enrichment analysis of these genes was conducted, and a complex network of genes vs. components vs. Kegg pathway vs. GO terms was constructed and used to select the key components for experiments. The results show that oleanolic acid (1 mg/mL, 0.1 mg/mL, and 0.01 mg/mL), rotenone (1 mg/mL, 0.1 mg/mL, and 0.01 mg/mL), and beta-caryophyllene oxide (1 mg/mL, 0.1 mg/mL, and 0.01 mg/mL) had a significant repellent effect on Z. cucuribitae, and three components, rotenone (1 mg/mL and 0.1 mg/mL), echinocystic acid (1 mg/mL, 0.1 mg/mL, and 0.01 mg/mL), and beta-caryophyllene oxide (1 mg/mL, and 0.1 mg/mL) had significant stomach toxicity in Z. cucuribitae. Furthermore, a complex signaling pathway was built and used to predict the effect of these components on Z. cucuribitae. These components probably play roles in the neuroactive ligand–receptor interaction (ko04080) and calcium signaling (ko04020) pathways. This study provides a reference for the prevention and control of Z. cucuribitae and a scientific reference for the rapid screening and development of new pest control drugs. Full article

Innovative plant protection solutions are increasingly sought in modern agriculture. Rapid advances in nanotechnology offer promising opportunities to develop biodegradable, cost-effective composites containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with well-documented antimicrobial properties. The aim of this study was to synthesize sodium alginate gels containing AgNPs, evaluate their physicochemical and antibacterial properties, and assess their effect on the growth of red cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. rubra) seedlings. In accordance with the principles of green chemistry, AgNPs were chemically synthesized using sodium alginate as a stabilizer and fructose as a non-toxic reducing agent. The final composite contained 150 mg/L AgNPs and was diluted to 20 and 60 mg/L for biological tests. Antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was tested using agar diffusion assays. Seedling growth parameters and phytochemical content were assessed after 10 days of seedlings exposure to AgNPs. The results showed significant antibacterial activity in all tested strains. Crucially, neither AgNPs concentration negatively affected seedling development or phytochemical concentration. Application of AgNPs at concentration of 60 mg/L increased ascorbic acid and carotenoids content in comparison to control (deionized water). These results suggest that AgNPs-alginate composites may serve as sustainable antimicrobial agents in agriculture, inhibiting pathogens without compromising crop quality. Full article

Maintaining stable crop yields is crucial for sustainable agriculture. This study investigated the impact of various fertilization regimes, combined with regional climate variables, on the yield stability of cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) in southern Taiwan. Conducted from 2011 to 2023 on well-maintained soils that were established in 1988, the study examined two crop rotation systems (R1 and R2) and three fertilization treatments: chemical fertilizer, integrated fertilizer, and organic fertilizer. Despite the consistent annual application of fertilizers, the regression analysis revealed a significant decline in cabbage yields across all six treatment combinations, mainly due to reduced weights of single cabbages. To identify contributing factors, the yield data were analyzed alongside weather and soil data, collected over more than a decade. A Pearson correlation analysis showed that increased sunshine duration, solar radiation, and higher relative humidity were significantly negatively correlated with cabbage yields in both the R1 and R2 rotation systems. Additionally, the regression tree analysis indicated that solar radiation exceeding 16.917 MJ m−2 per day was associated with lower yields. A further analysis of the total nitrogen accumulation revealed increasing nitrogen concentrations in the outer leaves of cabbages during this period, potentially contributing to the reduced head yields. These findings highlight that fertilization had a minimal influence on yield, even in well-established soils. Mitigating the effects of weather variables is, therefore, critical to reducing their adverse impact on crop yields. Full article

In vitro micropropagation is used to rapidly shorten the breeding process of crops, such as kale, an internationally widespread winter vegetable. The aim of this study is to develop optimised micropropagation protocols for three kale varieties. First, it was determined which seed surface disinfection method resulted in the highest germination rate and the lowest infection rate. Secondly, it was investigated which of several existing Brassica protocols and one modified protocol from the literature provided the highest regeneration efficiency of kale explant types (cotyledons, hypocotyl, root, and intact seedlings as the control) after eight weeks of cultivation. Germination was highest and fastest after disinfection with 10% NaClO for 10 min for “Frostara” and at 5% for 2.5 min for “Schatteburg”. The infection rate and speed were lowest in treatments with 10% NaClO. The regeneration efficiency and number of newly formed leaves, roots, shoots, and stems varied between media, explant type, and kale variety. Most new leaves and shoots were formed when hypocotyls were used as explant type. Roots regenerated mostly more roots than shoots, stems, and leaves. A higher ratio of auxin to cytokinin in the culture medium partially increased leaf regeneration. The addition of AgNO3 increased shoot regeneration and reduced yellowing and leaf drop. Phenotypic anomalies occurred less frequently in media with lower hormone concentrations. All tested protocols are suitable for kale micropropagation, but regeneration was highly dependent on the medium for different varieties and explant types. Therefore, this study builds a basis for future micropropagation of kale and the development of variety-specific protocols for maximum commercial success. Full article

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) is a globally significant vegetable crop that faces productivity challenges due to fungal and bacterial pathogens. This review highlights the potential of spectral imaging techniques, specifically multispectral and hyperspectral methods, in detecting biotic stress in cabbage, with a particular emphasis on pathogen-induced responses. These non-invasive approaches enable real-time assessment of plant physiological and biochemical changes, providing detailed spectral data to identify pathogens before visible symptoms appear. Hyperspectral imaging, with its high spectral resolution, allows for distinctions among different pathogens and the evaluation of stress responses, whereas multispectral imaging offers broad-scale monitoring suitable for field-level applications. The work synthesizes research in the existing literature while presenting novel experimental findings that validate and extend current knowledge. Significant spectral changes are reported in cabbage leaves infected by Alternaria brassicae and Botrytis cinerea. Early-stage detection was facilitated by alterations in flavonoids (400–450 nm), chlorophyll (430–450, 680–700 nm), carotenoids (470–520 nm), xanthophyll (520–600 nm), anthocyanin (550–560 nm, 700–710 nm, 780–790 nm), phenols/mycotoxins (700–750 nm, 718–722), water/pigments content (800–900 nm), and polyphenols/lignin (900–1000). The findings underscore the importance of targeting specific spectral ranges for early pathogen detection. By integrating these techniques with machine learning, this research demonstrates their applicability in advancing precision agriculture, improving disease management, and promoting sustainable production systems. This study investigates the impact of high temperature (HT) on the metabolic profile, oxidative-stress parameters, and antioxidant capacity of broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. cymosa) at different developmental stages—microgreens, seedlings, and two organs at the mature stage (leaves and head). We used spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods to quantify the concentrations of different groups and individual phenolic compounds, L-ascorbic acids, soluble sugars, proteins, glucosinolates, nitrates, pigments, oxidative-stress parameters, and antioxidant capacity. The highest number of analyzed variables significantly impacted by HT was in mature broccoli heads, with the most substantial change being an increase in proline by 168%. The lowest number of variables susceptible to HT (66%) was in the leaves of mature broccoli. The most dramatic change observed in this study was an increase in proline in seedlings by 587%. Statistical analyses showed that developmental stage plays a dominant role in shaping metabolic profiles, while HT further modulates it. Based on the measured parameters, the average contribution of developmental stage to the variance was 75%, while temperature explained 39% of the variance. The highest proportion of variance caused by temperature was seen in proline (92%), followed by kaempferol (80%), chlorophyll a/b (76%), soluble sugars (73%), total flavonoids (65%), antioxidant capacity measured by DPPH (58%), and chlorophyll/carotenoids ratio (56%). Temperature explained more variance than developmental stage for the concentration of soluble sugars, total hydroxycinnamic acids, and total tannins, which indicates an important role of these metabolites’ groups in the response of broccoli to HTs. The interaction of developmental stage and temperature explained more variance than developmental stage alone for the concentration of total proanthocyanidins, hydroxycinnamic acids, and phenolic acids. These findings underscore the complexity of metabolic regulation in broccoli and emphasize the importance of considering both developmental stage and environmental conditions when assessing its nutritional and functional properties. Background: Equally with other indigenous green leafy vegetables, Solunum nigrum L. has been widely consumed by the VhaVenda tribe found in the Limpopo Province of South Africa since ancient times as a source of food diversification due to its higher-quality nutritional value, sustainability, food security, and medicinal benefits. It is mostly cultivated from seeds in seedling trays and transplanted in the open field, and at the maturity stage, marketing and distribution are mainly conducting through informal markets (i.e., street vendors). However, recently, it can be found in selected supermarkets and commercial grocery stores in South Africa. The leaves and young shoots of S. nigrum are cooked solely and/or as a supplementary vegetable with Brassica rapa L. subsp. chinensis (Chinese cabbage), Spinacia oleracea L. (spinach), Amaranthus graecizans L. (green amaranth), Solanum lycopersicum L. (tomato), and/or cooking oil for flavor. Objective: Contrary to other green leafy vegetables, few studies have been conducted on the metabolites released by S. nigrum and the influence of growing conditions on the metabolites thereof. Method: A 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance tool was used to identify the untargeted metabolites released by S. nigrum, and spectra were phase-corrected and binned with MestReNova and statistically analyzed with SIMCA 18.0.2. Results: The findings showed that a total of 12 metabolites were detected between the growing conditions. Eleven similar metabolites, such as glycocholate, chlorogenate (human health benefits), caffeine for its bitter taste, choline, 3-Chlorotyrosine (antidiabetic, blood pressure), etc., and a few vital soluble sugars, were detected in S. nigrum samples grown in the open field and greenhouse-cultivated. Glucose was exclusively detected in the S. nigrum grown under greenhouse conditions. Full article

Unraveling the evolutionary history of Brassica L. crops and their wild relatives remains a key challenge in plant evolutionary biology. Brassica cretica is considered the closest living relative of the cultivated B. oleracea. It is mainly distributed in the Aegean Islands and the neighboring mainland regions of Greece and Anatolia, and exhibits extensive phenotypic variability, obscuring its infraspecific classification. In this study, we analyzed five Greek populations of B. cretica and one B. oleracea botanical variety using SSR markers to assess genetic diversity and differentiation. High genetic diversity was detected within natural populations, with a mean of 21.9 alleles per locus and an expected heterozygosity of 0.647. Significant genetic differentiation (Fst = 0.812) revealed the presence of four distinct gene pools, partly supporting the current infraspecific classification of B. cretica. The cultivated plants cluster closely with B. cretica subsp. cretica, supporting the hypothesis of an Eastern Mediterranean origin. Our findings suggest that B. cretica subsp. cretica may have been introduced to suitable habitats or that cultivated plants may have reverted to a feral state in the Peloponnese, given the genetic similarity between populations from Crete and northern Peloponnese. The identified genetic diversity underscores the importance of B. cretica as a genetic resource for breeding programs and highlights the need for conservation, particularly for populations exhibited unique genetic traits. Alley cropping, an agroforestry system that integrates trees and arable crops, holds the potential to improve both crop yields and soil health. It has been found to be effective for upland crops in many countries of the world. However, the utilization of alley cropping to improve soil health in the terrace ecosystem of Bangladesh is poorly understood. Therefore, this study was undertaken to assess the changes in soil biochemical properties and quantify the cabbage yield under three alley widths of Leucaena leucocephala (3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 m size) and five nitrogen (N) levels [0, 40, 80, 120, and 160 kg N ha−1 (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of recommended N rates, respectively) with the addition of pruned materials of L. leucocephala (Ipil-ipil)]. The field experiment was conducted following a split-plot design, where alley width was considered as the main-plot factor and N rate as the sub-plot factor. Within each main plot, the five N rates were replicated thrice. Control plots with similar N doses were applied accordingly without addition of pruned materials to compare the results with alley cropping. Data were collected on the biochemical properties of the soil [soil pH, organic carbon (C), total N, available phosphorus (P), exchangeable potassium (K), microbial biomass C, and biomass N] and the yield of cabbage quantified [edible head weight (kg plant−1) and head yield (t ha−1)] under different alley widths and control. Findings revealed that organic C, total N, available P, exchangeable K, microbial biomass C, and biomass N in the topsoil exhibited maximum values in the L. leucocephala-based alley plot, which is proved to be a possible solution of restoration of degradable land. Additionally, L. leucocephala-based alley cropping improved the soil pH, indicating a potential avenue for more-sustainable land management practices. Results also showed that alley widths and N rates have significant effects on cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) yield. Alley width of 6.0 m along with 100% N provided the highest cabbage yield followed by 75% N in 6.0 m alley, and the control with 100%. The wider alley minimizes tree–crop competition, allowing for optimal cabbage production. These aforementioned results suggest that alley cropping with L. leucocephala is a promising approach to enhance soil fertility and crop productivity in the terrace ecosystem of Bangladesh. Structural Variations of Broccoli Polyphenolics and Their Antioxidant Capacity as a Function of Growing Temperature

Polyphenolics in plants exist in free, soluble-bound, and insoluble-bound structural forms. The concentration of these structural forms depends on the plant’s developmental stage, tissue type, soil water availability, and food preparation methods. In this study, for the first time, the effects of growth temperature (RT—room temperature—23 °C day/18 °C night, HT—high temperature—38 °C day/33 °C night, LT—low temperature—12 °C day/7 °C night) on variations of polyphenolic structural forms—free, soluble-bound (esterified and glycosylated), and insoluble-bound—in broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. convar. botrytis (L.) Alef. var. cymosa Duch.) microgreens were investigated. Using spectrophotometric, RP-HPLC, and statistical analyses, it was found that the highest amount of total phenolics (TP) in broccoli microgreens was present in the esterified form, regardless of the temperature at which they were grown (63.21 ± 3.49 mg GAE/g dw in RT, 65.55 ± 8.33 mg GAE/g dw in HT, 77.44 ± 7.82 mg GAE/g dw in LT). LT significantly increased the amount of free (from 13.30 ± 2.22 mg GAE/g dw in RT to 18.33 ± 3.85 mg GAE/g dw) and esterified soluble TP (from 63.21 ± 3.49 mg GAE/g dw in RT to 77.44 ± 7.82 mg GAE/g dw), while HT significantly increased the amount of TP glycosylated forms (from 14.85 ± 1.45 mg GAE/g dw in RT to 17.84 ± 1.20 mg GAE/g dw). LT also enhanced free and esterified forms of total flavonoids, tannins, hydroxycinnamic acids, and flavonols. HT, on the other hand, increased glycosylated forms of TP, flavonoids, tannins, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, and phenolic acids, and decreased insoluble-bound tannins. According to the ABTS method, HT induced antioxidant potential of free and glycosylated forms, while LT increased antioxidant capacity of free forms only. According to the FRAP method, LT increased antioxidant potential of free and esterified polyphenolic forms. Also, based on ABTS and FRAP assays, esterified polyphenolics showed significantly higher antioxidant capacity than any other form. Principal component analysis showed that structural form had a greater impact than temperature. Hierarchical clustering showed that RT-, HT- and LT-broccoli microgreens were most similar in their glycosylated polyphenolics, but differed the most in esterified forms, which were also the most distinct overall. In conclusion, HT and LT induced specific shifts in the structural forms of broccoli polyphenolics and their antioxidant capacity. Based on the results, we recommend applying LT to increase the amount of free and esterified polyphenolics in broccoli microgreens, while HT may be used to enhance glycosylated forms. Full article

This is a pioneering study on the main drainage system in Gujranwala District, where untreated mixed wastewater is discharged and subsequently used for vegetable irrigation, leading to potential health and environmental risks. This study seeks to develop the spatial pattern of toxic metal accumulation in soil across an 11 km stretch of land used for vegetable cultivation. By using 90 samples of mixed wastewater and sludge, as well as 10 quadruplicate samples of rhizospheric soils and crops from ten vegetable fields, it was observed that the concentrations of Cr, Cu, Cd, Zn, Fe, Pb, Mg, and Ni in cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis L.), coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.), mustard (Brassica juncea L.), spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.), meadow clover (Trifolium sp. L.), sorghum (Sorghum bicolour L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.), brinjal (Solanum melongena L.), and mint (Mentha L.) were beyond the permissible limits set by the FAO/WHO, 2001. The declining trend of the toxic metal concentrations in the effluent was Mg > Cr > Ni > Zn > Pb > Cd > Cu > Fe, and in sludge, soil, and plants, it varied in the order of Mg > Fe > Cr > Ni > Zn > Pb > Cd > Cu. Radish, mint, and brinjal had the highest quantities of toxic metals. The spatial pattern of toxic metals was determined by using proximity interpolation, Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), the fine tuning of the interpolation characteristics, and the kriging of selected sample variograms. Toxic metals were found in the following order: plants > soil > sludge > effluents. The most prevalent cause of metal pollution was soil irrigation with polluted water. This study provides crucial information about the extent of contamination, which could help in the identification of public health risk, the assessment of environmental impacts, and also sustainable water management.
