Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue, titled “Groundwater Dynamics and Modeling”, focuses on recent advances and progress in groundwater studies. It especially centers on advancing knowledge and methodologies related to groundwater systems, emphasizing both physical dynamics and modeling approaches. It seeks to integrate field observations, numerical simulations, and innovative technologies to address challenges in groundwater sustainability, contamination control, and resource management under changing environmental conditions. Human activities and the impact of climate change on the water environment have increased the importance of high-quality groundwater. Therefore, the efforts of hydrogeologists focus on the study of groundwater recharge, flow and drainage processes in pore, fissure and karst systems.
This Special Issue’s scope is broad yet targeted, covering interdisciplinary aspects of hydrogeology and modeling. Key areas include the following:
- Development of novel simulation techniques for local and regional scale models;
- Numerical modeling of complex regional aquifer systems;
- Interaction between groundwater and geological formations;
- Contaminant transport, fate, and remediation strategies;
- Effects of climate change and extreme weather on recharge and water resources;
- Vulnerability of different types of environments/catchments to drought;
- Sustainable management with adaptive strategies for groundwater depletion;
- Solving regional mine drainage problems;
- Numerical modeling of intake operation in complex hydrostructural conditions;
- Geospatial technologies, remote sensing and satellite-based monitoring in modeling approaches;
- Groundwater–surface water interactions;
- Utilizing multi-scale modeling of coupled systems;
- Using AI in data processing and numerical model development;
- Solving calibration and uncertainty reduction problems.
As demand for high-quality water grows and resources become scarcer, accurately assessing groundwater resources and their exposure to pollution using the most recent numerical techniques is a key challenge for hydrogeologists around the world. Therefore, we are organizing this Special Issue to invite colleagues to present the latest advances in groundwater dynamics and numerical modeling for understanding complex hydrogeological conditions in the context of groundwater resource assessment, protection, and quality. We emphasize new computational techniques, data utilization, innovative measurement instrumentation, and numerical modeling. By presenting this integrated and multidisciplinary volume, we highlight the complexity of the processes governing groundwater flow to provide guidance for the sustainable development of groundwater resources.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
