In Africa, the rotavirus diarrhoea sentinel surveillance network was established in 2006. The surveillance network generated extensive datasets, offering a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the burden of rotavirus-related hospitalizations and guide rotavirus vaccine introduction.
The platform was used to document the early impact of rotavirus vaccination in many countries, with findings published in reputable journals as part of a supplement.
In 2018, selected high-performing countries were integrated into the Global Pediatric Diarrheal Surveillance (GPDS) network. In these countries, stool samples were tested for a broader range of enteropathogens using the TaqMan Array Card (TAC) platform.
Over a decade has passed since African countries introduced rotavirus vaccines into national immunization programs. It is timely to assess the long-term impact of vaccination on rotavirus epidemiology, diarrheal hospitalizations, and any changes in circulating rotavirus genotypes.
Additionally, in GPDS-participating countries, there is a unique opportunity to identify and document the enteropathogens causing childhood diarrhea post-rotavirus vaccine introduction. This can provide critical insights into evolving pathogen dynamics.
Publishing the findings of these surveillance activities in a Special Issue will demonstrate the value of vaccines and vaccination as well as the need for new vaccines.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Vaccines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
