Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transport sector is one of the largest sources of air pollution, as vehicles emit sulfur, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide emissions, in addition to particulate matter. In the near future, Europe aims to become a climate-neutral continent, which means the transport sector must also develop its carbon neutrality strategy. Sustainability principles in the transport sector include reducing environmental impact, promoting efficient resource use, and ensuring social responsibility and socio-economic efficiency. One of the key sustainability principles is energy efficiency. This means that vehicles should consume less energy, which can be achieved by implementing new technologies. Sustainable vehicles not only reduce emissions but also decrease dependence on fossil fuels. With this, another important aspect of sustainability is the use of alternative fuel sources such as biodiesel, hydrogen, and electric batteries. This helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

To ensure sustainability principles are enacted, the integration of transport systems and multimodality is essential. In freight transportation, significant attention is given to sustainable and green logistics. For smooth travel, different modes of transport should be harmoniously connected. Furthermore, an efficient public transport system can reduce the use of private cars, leading to decreased traffic congestion and air pollution. The development of advanced infrastructure is also crucial, including the expansion of charging station networks, the modernization of public transport, and the improvement of bicycle lane infrastructure. Proper infrastructure not only ensures the seamless use of electric vehicles but also encourages people to choose sustainable travel options such as cycling, public transport, or trains. The implementation of innovations such as intelligent transport systems enables more efficient traffic management and reduces fuel consumption. Smart technologies that provide real-time information on traffic conditions and potential issues improve both traveler safety and convenience.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  1. Use of alternative energy in the transport sector.
  2. Reduction of environmental impact of the transport sector.
  3. Sustainable and green logistics.
  4. Integration of new transport systems and multimodality.
  5. Development of an efficient public transport system.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
