Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the energy evolution to meet the global needs for electricity, heating, cooling, and transport, the sustainable transition is considered one of the most crucial challenges. Meeting our present needs without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own needs refers to a sustainable system. A sustainable system ensures the right balance between the environment, economy, and society. Thus, an energy system that can fulfill these criteria is termed a sustainable energy system. A sustainable energy system is one of the prerequisites toward overall national sustainable development, and this is equally important for both developed and developing countries. For instance, a future electricity grid expansion plan must consider the three sustainability criteria/pillars (environment, economy, and society) for developing economies. At the same time, a sustainable energy transition pathway must be ensured for the developed nations. The sustainable energy transition requires a considerable scale change with new technology, system thinking, business models, market analysis, policies, and governance. Therefore, the latest studies should focus on innovations in the sustainable energy sector.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles and reviews that address different assessment methods, analysis, and technologies related to sustainable energy and development. These include but are not limited to:

  • Identifying sustainable energy solutions in relation to energy resource availability, conversion methods, and energy demand and supply;
  • Conceptualization and design of an energy system to promote access to energy in a sustainable way;
  • Assessing the performance of an energy system with respect to sustainability;
  • Characterizing the operational behavior of a sustainable energy system with all the system components;
  • Analyzing rules and regulations, policies, pricing mechanism for a sustainable energy solution;
  • Conducting sustainability impact assessments of the existing energy systems focusing on social, economic, and environmental aspects.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
